It looks (and is) quite simple, just two knobs to play with. Getting a good sound out of it (at least on bass), however, will take some tweaking. And once you get the sensitivity where you need it, the number of knobs to tweak goes down to just one.

I'm a bass player and I've played with two different setups on this effect. The first was through an Ibanez SR400 (passive) into a Crate BXR160 amp and the second was through a Musicman/ErnieBall Sterling (active) through the same amp. First of all, to get a good sound with either bass you must be very good at controlling the strength of your attack. Otherwise the amount of sweep that the pedal produces will vary quite wildly. This was less of a problem with the pedal in the effects loop on my amp instead of straight from the bass to the pedal to the main input, and to be honest going the direct route I never was able to control the sweep very well with the passive bass. My main complaint with this pedal is that it absolutely kills the lows in your sound. Quite trebely sounding, which in my opinion is about the worst sin a bass pedal can commit. Pretty cool, I suppose, if you are going for a really wild effect, but for something a bit more "natural" sounding this is not the pedal. Not really the Bootsy/Flea effect I was expecting, for that I would look to a E/H Bass Balls. (or a Mutron III if I had that kind of money laying around) Sounded the best when I was slapping and no longer really cared about my tone, and the sweep on the pop is sweet enough to make you forget that all of your lows have gone bye bye.

To sum it up, a very solidly constructed pedal that is a disappointment on bass. The lows go away and it's hard to appreciate the very electronic sounding sweep unless you are always slap happy.

As a guitarist who always wanted a cavilet this pedal is a dream come true, emulating my favorite Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder tunes is a breaze. The pedal is highly responcive to changing in picking and pick ups, using one of my Rickenbackers (330/12 360/6) i can run the whole gauntlet of funk keyboard sounds from bass to treble depending on my pick up.a a little overdrive and you have stevies superstition sound going for you.

Considering how beat up this pedal is, i can safley assume that you can beat it drop it and hit it and it will only sound better. I can have and will continue to gigi with out a back up, as i always keep a spare 9volt on hand

I play everything from Classic Rock to Jazz to folk, but this pedal comes out when its time to get funky. If it were stolen i'd be upset because this one was free, but its all good, I'd buy one again. Its definatly not for every one, but it's all I really need.

this has a great sound. it can go from quack to a watery wah kinda chorusy. if you use it with distortion very tight. i tried it on bass. i like it better for guitar. i think this was actually made more for guitar. the new one has a blend knob which makes you change it to bassier or more suitable for guitar. i tried this with one other pedal a DS-1 and it sounded very f**king tight. sounds really like korn even though munky uses one. if you use this with a EQ it sounds like some watery mu-tron III sounds when you get that boost. this is really versatile for a envelope filter. like i said really quacky to chorusy sounding. its different which is cool you don't always want that "bow" sound even though that's what i go for. gotta give DOD their props.

Guitarists: this will alter your tone, so dialing in subtle settings will take a bit of fiddling. Twisting the knobs even just a little bit will make pretty dramatic changes. Editing is easy, there are only two knobs. Works best with a hotter input, which might explain the raves from bassists & boos from guitarists. This one was used, so no manual. Took me about 10 minutes of experimentation to get its vibe. Using a compressor with it helps tremendously. This is not a "buy it on your way to the gig" pedal.

I used the FX25 with (a.) ~1940ish Epiphone Zephyr Archtop with a big DeArmond pickup custom mounted at the neck, and (b.) a mid-70's Ibanez Artist. I put the FX25 in my stompbox chain, after my DynaComp & overdrive pedals, and before my Delay. These go more or less into a late 60's Fender Twin (no master vol). The Epi with the DeArmond is approximately 2-3 times the output power of a strat, so the FX25 had a lot of signal strength to work with. It did OK, but I found its low end sweep to get too huge; the Epi has huge bottom-end already. I switched to the Artist, which is less powerful, but more powerful than say, a les paul. I got the best results with this. The FX25 requires a little time-investment to get the best results. You have to adjust your playing and its settings into a benefical compromise. It's the first Envelope Filter I've tried (after a Boss Auto-Wah, which was terrible), and it's not too bad. I'd like to be able to adjust more settings. It's on loan from the local guitar shop while I check it out. Haven't decided whether to buy it yet. Sound quality is OK- not noisy, but it does some tonal alterations. Boss stuff does this too. It's up to you to decide whether that's acceptable or not.

Seems dependable. Plastic battery cover is missing. I understand that is typical of most used DOD pedals, so that feature doesn't impress me. The rest of the box is solid. I'm using an AC adaptor, so I can't comment on battery-life. Haven't gigged with it, but would risk doing so without a backup.

I play in 2 original bands now: in a trio best compared to Cream, and in a folk-pop band behind a female singer/acoustic guitarist. I was hoping to do some different stuff with this type of pedal like funky baritone phrases or the Edie Brickell "What I Am" thing. Don't know if I'll buy it yet. I'd like to try some others. I bought a Boss AW-2 Auto-Wah, and hated it after 20 minutes. I'm not interested in doing wah type stuff with the FX25. I have a crybaby for that. In general, this is a pretty good pedal. It is helping break my prejudice against DOD, but I don't know if it's the pedal I want yet. However, I find it to sound pretty good. It seems reliable and works well.

There's two knobs - Range and Sensitivity - so all you have to do is screw with them and you get cool sounds. The manual is kinda useless, because this box is a funky auto wah, and it's difficult to go wrong with one. This unit's been updated to the FX25-B with a blend knob which controls the clean and effect mix, but the two boxes are basically the same.

Actually, this is my friend's box, and he uses it on his homemade bass. He uses my Peavey KB/A 100 amp with the eq set to about 3/4 all around. It sounds really good all the time, provided you use it in the right context of music. Don't expect to find an application for this effect if you play any thrash metal or shit like that. This box sounds excellent used in funk music, like RHCP or DAG or bands like that. My friend bought this because he heard and saw Flea (from RHCP) use it on an instructional video. Flea kicks ass. He also uses it on "The Power of Equality" on the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, so if you want to hear it, check that song out.
This is a level independent effect, meaning the harder you play, the more dramatic wah you get. It's not ever noisy, unless you have a cheapo amp, and then it's noisy when the wah gets real open, but it doesn't go there unless thou should have the "Range" set all da way up, hence I give it a 9. One time, he and I took my BF-2 Boss flanger and the FX25 and combined them = Absolutely the funkiest-ass sound I ever heard. Try adding a distortion and an octaver to this thing!!

I don't know. It's not my box, ask my friend. Yeah, it seems reliable. It's well built, almost like a Boss. We've not gigged all that much using it, but it hasn't failed during practice, so sure, we'd depend on it. I give this one a 9 because I don't know as well as he would.

This is a great box for funk and some rock music. If you wanna know the rest, ask my friend, because he would know. I like it. It sounds really cool for the music we play (difficult to describe, it's catchy hard rock with a little alt-rock and funk influence). If you aren't a fan of the wah, don't even bother, but if you like funk or Flea or shit like that, this is a must!

I bought this thing because I saw a video on bass playing by Flea, and he said he uses it. I don't see how he gets the sounds that he does out of it. I have a Fender fretless jazz bass and a BXR100 amp, and I couldn't find any settings that remotly sounded like Sir Psycho Sexy. The effect is very thin when slaped, and it has a huge volume boost when it sweeps to the low end.

Overall it's not the worst effect I've used, but I'd deffinetly pay more and get a better envelope filter. It was funky if not as funky as Flea...but then again, who is? I might buy the new DOD envelope filter because it has a blend knob. Maybe that way I could thicken up my sound and still get the funk effect.

It only has two knobs. Range and Sensitivity. Getting a good sound is easy. If you play two finger style bass, it can be hard to use. One reason is that the DOD needs a strong input signal for it to react. Anoter reason is that it "dips" every once in a while as if one was stepping down on a wah. The "dip" occurs consistanly, so it's easy to adjust your playing. Just don't try to sustain many notes.

The FX-25 is quiet. It's hard to use with other effects because it is so radical. This wah is really greasy and wet. It is not a subtle wah at all. Some people think this effect sounds silly. It does but that's what's cool about it.

Being an autowah, it's good for funk. It works good on guitar and bass(I play both). On guitar, I like to use it for single note parts and not on chords so much. If you want to know a good autowah that sounds great on guitar, check out the Guyatone Wah Rocker. On bass, I use it for thumpin, and pluckin. I compared the FX-25 to other envelope filters and none of them sound like this one. If you already have an envelope filter you love, check the DOD out anyway. It sounds quite unique.

The FX-25 isn't that noisy. For bass, I only use it for slap because it needs a strong input signal to really wah. I have used it for recording several times and it sounds cool. Also for Bootsy Collins fans, he uses these in addition to his Mutrons.

I have a MutronIII+, Boss Dynamic Filter and Guyatone Bass Wah. The The Boss and the Guyatone are pretty much obsolete now because they basically sound like cheaper versions of the Mutron. The DOD FX-25, however, sounds nothing like a Mutron. It can get wilder and wetter than the Mutron. It has it's own unique sound. So if you like envelope filters, get one. Plus, it's a bargain.
