This pedal is great for funk and sound fx. All my axes sound great thru it, you just have to mess with the knobs to get the right setting for the output level of your pickups. Great for bass too. Re: Sir Psycho Sexy by the chili peppers.

Unlike many people on these user boards, I haven't had a problem out of DOD boxes. The switching is effortless - you don't need to press down hard at all. If the pots get scratchy, take off the battery cover (PS I still have all mine) and spray them with contact cleaner. Great idea for the location of the pots. The accessibility keeps you from having to disassemble the whole pedal. Made in USA!

I own LOTS of pedals from Boss, Ibanez, EH, DOD and many clones too. I bought this as an alternative to the overpriced and overrated DOD 440. It resides on my DOD FX-100 board along with 4 other USA DOD boxes. Glad these are still cheap. Great filter.

Two knobs is all this pedal has, but because they seem to interact with each other slightly unpredictably... there's still a hell of a lot of tweaking you can do before you get the kinda sound you want.

I'm a guitarist, i kinda got this pedal 'cause i like DOD's and i found it cheap on ebay... (i think this is the last lime green pedal, just before it went sparkle green). I dunno, i guess it has it's uses for me, but i must say i do see it as a bass pedal really. The sound is cool, i DEFINITELY notice a volume increase and not a drop, so the guy who says it's useless live because of that should get the version i have. But yeah, bass players will get the most from this, it doesn't do subtle really, so it can be hard to fit in to my playing style.

The DOD FX25 has a blend control, sensitivity control, and range control. This pedal is pretty easy to use but I found that it's hard to really get a board range of sounds out of the pedal. The only dial I mess with most is the sensitivity control.

This a pretty cool pedal. You can get a really cool funky tone out of it. It's almost like an atuo-wah, only it's an envelope filter. You can't really change it's sound too much, so you are stuck with you buy. But overall the sound is very useable. I will say the sensitivity is pretty neat with this pedal. You can get a really control what the filter does by hitting the notes harder or softer. Try messing with it on low notes palm muting.

I love this little pedal! It is cool for those funky, 70's porno wacka-wacka sounds. Also definitely fun for leads. It can even add a cool analog 70's synth sound with some tweaking. It is simply a fun little pedal. I think it sounds cool with either clean or way distorted tones. This resides on a pedal board with a DOD Phaser, Arion Octave, Ibanez Digital Delay, and a boss NS-2. I love combining this with the octave pedal for some crazy whacked out sounds.

This is a pretty cool little E.Filter. 3 knobs: Blend, Sensetivity, and Range. By twisting knobs, experimenting, you can come up with good Filter sounds. Good for Bass or Guitar. They Manual is average; explains settings/what each knob does, but only by tweaking knobs can one begin to coax sounds to their liking. "Firmware revision #"? Huh? Mine is the Extreme Version. GFX25 "Extreme" Envelope Filter. Is that considered an "upgrade"? I like mine, all I know. Have used it on stage; can use it for wah sounds, scratch sounds conducive to rap, and it inspires creativity for me. :)...

Actually, sounds are pretty good, coming out of this lil' box. Somewhat noisy, especially when all 3 knobs are past the one o' clock settings. Hmm.....I use a solid state 120 watt amp. Not bad with my Metal Zone pedal. Tom Morello sounds, like what he does on "Bulls on Parade", can be achieved. Like it overall. Also, using with a Bass Guitar is great, too.

It's pretty easy to use and get a good sound out of, as long as you know how envelope filters work. The blend knob is a nice feature to mix the dry signal and effected signal, but it was hard for me to tell the difference between subtle changes with that knob. i can tell the difference between 9:00 and 3:00, but outside of that, not really.
Sound Quality

Ok, this thing certainly gets a different type of envelope sound than most others. It has its own character, which may not be what most people want. I love it, but the biggest problem i have with it is that the signal comes out very weak. i find myself having to use my volume pedal to boost the signal up every time i switch on the effect. also, the bypass on it is not impressive.
Reliability

i'm not generally a fan of DOD pedals. it feels like it would break if dropped. and the switch on it is horrible! i have to hit it dead on in order for a consistent switch, which doesn't sound like it should be a big deal, but when youre switching effects on and off a lot, you may not have time to position yourself for a dead on switch.

I guess I'm easily amused, and in general a newbie with envelope effects. But I found that just plugging in and monkeying with the knobs enabled me to get some funky sounds that I haven't otherwise gotten outa my guitar in years. In terms of those sounds being usable, that's where you have to spend time and dial in things. I like the new blend knob, it lets you dial in some dry signal which can be handy.

I've mainly had success using the FX25 after a Dyna Comp. I know that's not the idea with Envelope filters, because the sound depends on your picking attack and signal level, etc. and a compressor messes with all of that. But without the compresser I find the envelope closes too soon. With the compressor, I get a slow, sometimes interesting decay, even though the gate can slam shut at the very end. Oh well. But the point is the compressor makes the effect more controllable.

I bought this pedal for using with my bass after reading some reviews and the one lesson I've learned from this is....dont always believe what you read! This is NOT a bass pedal..In a real world live and loud gigging situation the volume drop when you engage the pedal makes it totally useless as an effect, and I found it couldnt settle on the sound I had dialled in, instead it moved from ultra muffled sub crap to ultra tinny twee crap...Horrible!

I play all kinds of music, mostly covers etc and the obvious application for an envelope filter would be on the funkier stuff...the FX25 is definately not a pedal for using with bass guitar when you want something to add to your signal, when you stand on it its like your bass has just been sucked down into a black hole with this tiny little Flea playing down at the very bottom through a 15w practice amp !

Two knobs, range and sensitivity. It's not too hard to use, though dialing in your sound, and placing it in your fx chain can be tricky. I have a johnson J station, and it's synth wah feature is much more versatile (you can set heel down position, heel up position, and sweep rate), but it tracks too much of the picking noise, so it's pretty useless.
A few extra knobs, or even internal trim pots, would be nice, but from what I've heard the newer 3 knob envelope filter doesn't sound as good.
Sound Quality
:

TONS of different tonal possibilities! It all depends on where it goes in your effects chain: I put it before or after distortion, before or after chorus, and so on. Most people like it first in their fx chain, but Iike it after all the fx. Putting it after a flanger actually makes a poor man's ring mod sound. I play a sheraton with alan holdsworth pickups and a strat with texas specials, so I do have to tweak my effects all the time for the two pedals anyway. For two knobs, this thing is great.

Really easy to use, plugged it straight in and it worked a treat. I play bass a lot and found it great for improvising, it really gives that funk groove that can be hard to find.

I actually only have an 8 watt practise amp at home but when I go for practise I've used different (better) ones and sounds good with them all. The only problem I can think of is that its a bit quiet, when you turn the effects off the bass seems really loud but i got round this by just playing hard.
I got the sound of Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (as he uses one sometimes) and Sir Psycho Sexy sounded really good with it as did Shallow be thy Game from One Hot Minute.

It helps me create my own stuff because I love the sound. I really enjoy playing with this and, although you can't get a huge range of sounds from it, I'd say its worth getting if you want to play funk bass.

I tried this with a bass git, but I intend to use it for keys/synth/sampler. I found it not noisy at all, but you gotta make sure your input volume is right for a good sound. I tried it with a Boss distortion pedal BEFORE it, but it was a bit much...I think a cleaner overdrive would be better for it. I believe distortion should go before the filter so the filter has something to "bite" (all that noise). But whatever sounds right is right, right? :)
I also use a compressor at the end of the chain for this baby as the filter can really get loud if I hit a few notes at once. Don't buy this pedal if you want 70s envelope sound...it is different. I reckon it'll be great for rhythm guitar.

There appears to be much criticism with regard to this pedal. Now I must admit, I am not a DOD pedal fan by any means, yet this particular pedal intrigued me- envelope filters are difficult to obtain at such a low price. I was concerned that due to the low price, the sound quality would be poor. Indeed, this pedal is an aquired taste, it has none of the options available in much more expensive filters (ie. Lovetone's meatball), yet it retains a character of it's own. Many have criticised this pedal because it doesn't replicate sounds that they had heard this pedal was used for. Personally I like to create my own unique tone, not replicate, yet the fx25 does a good job at nailing flea's tones on the BSSM album. This pedal has a quirky, fun and indeed funky feel to it. It is very sensitive to picking stroke and guitar pickup, yet this only hads to its many varied uses. It is also analog, which is always an added bonus. The pedal works well with distortion effects placed after it. Personally, I enjoy the sound this pedal creates, and sometimes use it far more than a wah pedal as the range here is greatly increased. My only criticism would be in the large amount of 'treble' tone from this effect. Unlike the meatball for instance, which is great for bassy thick sounds, the fx25 tends to focus on the mid / upper range. Light picking enhances bass tones however, and this creates interesting textures and intensities of sound

For the price, this pedal is a wonderfully fun sounding gizmo with some cool sounds and interesting options. It is an aquired taste so try before you buy. The FX25 is much warmer sounding than its recent update (FX25B), so I would advice that you try both to see which you prefer. If not you could always save the money for something bigger and better. Many have compared this pedal to Boss's auto-wah. The two r very different. The boss attempts to replicate a wah pedal, whilst the DOD is a standard envelope filter (in the sense that it filters the sound through a greatly enhanced built in eq). All in all, a great little pedal for guitar, bass, studio drum machine, keys, vocals, u name it.

I play a Ibanez roadstar w/a dimarzio super 2 ,sds1 ,and the factory humbucker. The pick-ups set as close to the strings as possible.Envelopes need that hot signal. But what really made that pedal and me get along was my amp, peavey chorus 400.The amp has a pre-amp effects loop needing a stereo y cable ring/tip.By plugging the tip into the input patching to a dod pedal eq having the ring to eq's out.Now the envelope has a strong low-line signal that can be sculped w/ the eq.The sound is now great.I can get a sweet Jerry(Garcia) sound, fire mt.estimated, shakedown st.I am more than pleased

Not using it currently, but it works great as a synth like texture, just add some distortion, phase, and delay (all post). If you've ever watched a bootleg of Tool playing Third Eye, you'll see Justin (bass player) smack the upper horn of his Wal with Dist. and Delay while holding a 4 string open D5 bass chord creating a massive BOOM. Add the filter to this and it starts at a very low pitch and slowly filters up (the delay really helps this effect). I found this pedal long before Wes Borland started using it. So I let my bass player start easing it instead. Plan to use it in the studio on some overdubs for noise tracks.

I play FUNK. I come from the P-Funk Bootsy Collins/Bernie Worrell school of funkadelia, and I need an envelope filter that will be my best friend. This pedal is like a bad blind date...
I've played strats and es-335's through this pedal into marshall stacks and Roland JC-120's. Nothing can make this pedal sound good. This was one of the few items I was glad to lose in a house fire. This pedal is a nightmare live, as it drops the volume so low that you completely get lost among the other instruments, so it's pointless to even use then. Live, the whimpiness of this pedal is bad too. You will have the engineer struggling to bring you out in the mix.
True, this is the lowest priced envelope pedal on the market, but youre throwing your money away if you buy this. Take some extra time and go for the newer Boss Auto-Wahs (the next up on the price bracket), or take some more time and save up for a Mu-Tron/Q-Tron. The point is, why buy a pedal so useless? You might as well just give me the money you would spend on this pedal, that way you won't drop completely out of the audience's ears upon turning this pedal on...

I returned the FX-25B that I bought 2 days earlier because the effected sound was just not 'happening' and there was a big decrease in output db from dry to effect, more so than a typical filter cause.
The GFX-25 is a very nice piece and I'm very happy with it. When compared to the Boss AW-3 (also a nice pedal) it holds it's own and is $50 less.

If it were stolen i most likely would buy another won. I love the Digital wah sound it gives off but i hate how it doean't have a volume knob beacause it's so silent to the original sound. My favorite feature would have to be the added blend knob and if i could add something it would definently be a volume knob. two knobs..."range" and sensitivity." If you know what it's limitations are it's ez. If you're expecting a decent EV filter or Mutron III then you'll end up pulling your hair out and regretting it; it won't do that.

A little iffy...when I first got it the switch was intermittant and the sound seemed to crap out on occasion. I did the "guy" thing and took it all apart and put it back together w/o really fixing anything, maybe just tightening a few things here and there. Works great now.

So here's the scoop. I bought this box solely based on the fact that Doug Wimbish had one so I had to get one too. I know, I'm a chump. I tried my darndest to get it sounding good as a decent EV follower but I am sorry guys..this thing was a lemon. there are so many decent Mutron-esque boxes out there these days that this just even isn't worth considering. Way too trebly on one end then a violent speaker ripping sweep to the way too bassy other end. So I sold it. Then I read something I that immediately made me regret my decision. instead of trying to make it do something it wouldn't (sound like a wicked EV filter) what dub-reggae folks like Bill Laswell do is to set the filter so that it DOESN'T OPEN. What you end up with is a phenomenally sub-harmonic synth tone. I play a ton of jah Wobble/Laswell "free-dub" now so I went on Ebay and bought another (like I said..I'm a chump,ok?) I LOVE THIS BOX. It is so cool to kick in when playing some deep dub vibe...HUGE deep tone and if you dig in hard enough that little bit o' sweep can be very cool. It's all about working within your limitations I guess. this box has totally inspired me and helped our set tremendously. Laswell in a box.

There's only two knobs -- Range and Sensitivity, so that's no problem. In fact, the Range knob doesn't do too much. It controls how wide the sweep of the wah sound is, but I think it sounds best just about anywhere on the upper half of the knob travel. The sensitivty knob controls over what range of guitar "volume" the pedal is responsive. What I mean is, depending on how "hard" you play and what volume setting your guitar is on will determine the position of the sensitvity knob in order to get a uniform wah sound. The reason why I only rate this pedal 6 on ease is because it's hard to leave sensitivity knob in the same position throughout an entire passge. The response of your pickups varies with where on the guitar you are playing, and this can translate into a huge effect on the wah sound -- a very low and muffled sound if sensitivty drops too low, and an ear splitting trebly sound if sensitivty is too high. At the extremes, the auto wah doesnt wah at all and sounds like an EQ turned all the way towards treble or all the way towards bass.
Sound Quality
:

If you can tweak the knobs just right, the sound out of this box is incredible. You have to modulate your playing a little bit in order to keep the wah response it range, but it's not hard to do. I'm a new guitarist with an American Series Tele plugged into my BXR 60 (this is my bass amp), and it sounds great. It's an auto wah, so it can be dangerous to play on a solo when your tone can just totally dip towards one extreme or the other, but if you learn the unit, that won't happen. You can get that great pedal wah sound of this unit, and if you put some overdrive on before the fx25, such as the dod 250, it can sound like Hendrix. I always thought that you should use overdrive after the wah, but it just sounds like total crap, try putting your distortion in front of the wah

This pedal is awesome. They're all over used on ebay, so if you find one for $25 or $30, it's a great value. The sounds you get out of this unit, when adjusted right, can pass for a true pedal wah. Fool around with it, because it's a lot of fun to play with this thing. Great value, Rock solid pedal

I use a Squire standard Strat into a Crate GX15 and a crybaby wah and a Boss Metal Zone and this thing gives me some crazy sounds that kick ass. I also use it with my Epiphone Explorer bass into a Peavy Deltabass head and Crate 2x15 cab with a Boss Bass Overdrive pedal. If you want funky bass lines, than get this pedal now. It also makes sort of a sweeping effect that doesnt sound like wah, but is damn cool. It replicates the beginning riff from Metallica's Outlaw Torn perfectly.

There are two knobs on this Envelope Filter (or Auto Wah)Range and Sensitivity.Range decides which frequences are emphasized. With the range at its lowest the bassier side of the wah comes out-just right for funky bass lines or fuzzed up guitar lines. Sensitivity decides when the wah comes into action. With the sens.control at its lowest value only a Pete Townshend-esque gitar battering will bring out the effect enabling lead without wah but a cutting wah rythm - cool. I found that the sens. control needed to be set at its most for a good sound though. The manual is the bare bones with little info on the effect and no user settings. A tad dissapointing as I like some extra literature. My pedal is one of the mid ninties issue so the manual may have been reviewed and upgraded.

I normally use my Telecaster into my monster pedal board into two hundred watt Carlsboro amps through a Groove Tubes cabinet. The envelope filter sits near the start of my chain.I employ a Boss gate sometimes but for the Dod pedal its not nescesary this a very quiet pedal. The basic wah on a clean channel is brilliant for Nile Rogers (chic)impersonators. Goose up the gain (via a Fuzz Face)and you can coax a Jimi Hendrix at woodstock tone that will have you ripping out those psychodelic blues licks all night long. This is all with the DOD before the distortion section in my chain. Swap this around however and with a little gain yoo can recreate the much celebrated Paranoid Android outro courtesy of the mercurial Jonny Greenwood(RADIOHEAD),a must for effects wackos like myself.Turn all the knobs up full and add a tremelo pedal and you get a chopped up synth tone perfect for dance style cuts ,another top sound which is not dissimilar to the BOSS "SLICER" effect on their multi effects units. The sound quality on this product is top notch.

I must say that the sound is rather unpredictable so using it to recreate a wah solo done originally on a pedal wah eg.Sweet child o'mine,Voodoo Chile, is a questionable exercise but for freak outs its the ticket. The build quality is very good with metal casing and a secure battery pod. The jacks feel safe in the sockets and I am yet to experience adaptor fall out mid tune and I've had this pedal for months. I would gig without back up with a clear mind .

As a collector of all things strange in the world of pedals this was a fine addition to my rig. The styles of music it can be applied to is endless and the tones are all useable. Okay its not as phat or flexible as a vintage MU-TRON III and the Q tron probably has the beating of it....just ,but for the cash it is essential. I would get one again if stolen or lost. I do wish there was a speed control for the envelpe or a direction switch but corners need to be cut some where. Overall it is very impressive.

Used with a torqued out Garnet BTO tube amp with tremelo. Does a decent Stevie Wonder Superstion/Higher Ground. A basic pedal but easier on batteries than my old Muron III and musically less out of control than a Mutron III. I like the limitations of the pedal, less time spent fussing and the filter is as good as an analog synth. Cleaner tone than a Korg MS-20 w/envelope follower, more ARP than Moog. I've heard lots of analog filters, this $40Us pedal is bargain.

I find fairly easy to use. As everybody else has said, there only two knobs on the thing. The tough part is setting the sensitivity to jibe with my playing style. After that, just gotta figure out how deep a wah you want.

I use this pedal with my (Super Cheap-style) bass mainly, playing into my big ol' Peavey combo. Only experimented a couple of times with my Dano U2, mostly so I could bang a couple 9th chords and say to my friends, "Look how funky I am!" I, for one, am absolutely smitten with the sound of this thing. But then, I mainly use it to make strange sounds and not necessarily "musical" ones. For instance, I like to turn on the envelope filter and ram the strings of my bass against the poles of the pickup. Your mileage may vary if you're trying to get more conventional sounds out of it.

My band generally plays 60's/70's style rock, blended with experimental/free jazz stuff and the occasional burst of pure noise. This thing, of course, fits right in. I'm not really an effects guy, mind you, I only have three pedals and only use two. This is one of the two I use. I don't have anything bad to say about my FX25 and I think I already made my feelings about it clear. If I were somehow to be deprived of it, I would consider buying another one, but it's not really an integral part of my sound. Overall, I would say that if you want to make odd noises, you should go ahead and buy one (especially if you can get it cheap), but if you're looking to be a little more musical with it, you'll want to play with one first.

This pedal sounds great, BUT you must understand how envelope filters work and know how to send your guitar's signal to it to get really good sounds. There are only two knobs -- Range & Sensitivity, simple enough, but that's only half the story, you must know what level and tone parameters to send it in order for it to react and respond decently. I give it a "6" here because the manual does not point out how critical the level and/or tone of the signal you feed it is.

I just had to write this review since the previous reviewer uses the same rig that I do and hates it. I'd hate this pedal too if I hadn't spent the time experimenting with different volume, tone, and pickup selections on my Les Paul. First, you must understand that on more elaborate envelope filters there is a input level knob and usually an overload indicator (as on the "Q-Tron"), and, on these fancier units there is some sort of tone control, either varible or filter selection. The FX25 is just a bare-bones unit, SO... you must control whether or not you overload the signal by using your guitar's volume control and you must also control the tonal range of your wah effect by using your guitar's tone knob in conjunction with which pickups you select.
For me, my favorite setting for my rig (Les Paul into a Marshall JCM 900) is to select the neck pickup (a Seymour Duncan Seth Lover) and set the guitar's volume to 7.5 and the tone to 7.5., and on the FX25, Range at 10:00 o'clock and Sensitivity at 2:30
This yeilds a very middy sounding and quacky wah -- very funky indeed! This is pretty much the only type of wah you can get from it. I say this because, the more elaborate units such as the Mutron and Q-Tron can give you Ouw and Wow sounds (like Garcia's Estimated Prophet or Shake Down Street).
If you're after Garcia's sound, do not get this pedal, for that, you'll have to save your money and get a Mutron. This pedal excels in giving you wonderful funk, disco, and reggae sounds (I use it mostly for the songs we do with a reggae beat)

I bought this pedal three years ago and it is the old DOD style with the small foot pedal pad and the non-hinged battery cover -- never any problems. I think these older style pedals are a little more sturdy than the newer ones -- the large plastic pedal pad on the newer ones seems like it could be the most vulnerable spot; however, I must admit that I have some of the new pedals and have never had any problems with them either -- time will tell.

Like I stated above, this pedal is a bare-bones envelope filter, but when you consider it's low price (compared to the $150 -- $300 you'd have to spend on a Q-Tron or Mutron) it is an excellent value. BUT, in order to get successful sounds with this pedal you must understand that all auto-wah's sound crappy when overloaded, so remember to adjust the signal you feed it via your guitar's volume knob. And the tonal range is controled by what pickup you select and your guitar's tone knob. For a definite WAH sound with lots of quack and funk, this is the box.
P.S.: I tried the new FX25B at the store the other day because I was curious and wasn't impressed -- it just doesn't have the character or 'in your face' emphasis that the original has.

This is a monster- and not in the good sense. I run a Les Paul into a JCM-900, and with the pedal on, it sounded like my amp went from "balls" to "pussy"! I used a crapload of effects, and depend on them for my sound. Being bigtime into guitarist that use effects (Dave Navarro, Jeff Beck, Rage ATM, etc) this pedal just blew! Bearing in mind I finally did away with rackmount gear, I wanted to return to the rawer, more in-your-face effect- and direct floor effects are the only ticket for that. I've really dug all the BOSS pedals so far, and didn't think DOD would be too far off the mark. However, once I plugged this in, I remembered why years ago I disliked DOD. The bottom end-- GONE! The high end-- SICKENING! The unit was bigtime noisy, and was more of an earsore than anything. Even with the unit off, it seemed to suck tone out of my guitar. I really don't know what application this pedal has since the sound out of it was pure garbage!

I've used this pedal through various guitar and bass heads , and i cant get any particuly great sounds from it, it can be pretty cool to mess about with but it hasnt really had any other use. Its certainly not noisy , rather it seems to cut out a lot of the input ,treble and bass which is part of its downfall perhaps. Playing it through guitar cuts out too much signal to be usefull , and with bass (Active and Passive) It takes away alot of the lower frequencies.A s said before, how Flea got that sound out of this i dont know. Maybe it would be ok if put through a compressor and EQ.

I'm a bass player and I've played with two different setups on this effect. The first was through an Ibanez SR400 (passive) into a Crate BXR160 amp and the second was through a Musicman/ErnieBall Sterling (active) through the same amp. First of all, to get a good sound with either bass you must be very good at controlling the strength of your attack. Otherwise the amount of sweep that the pedal produces will vary quite wildly. This was less of a problem with the pedal in the effects loop on my amp instead of straight from the bass to the pedal to the main input, and to be honest going the direct route I never was able to control the sweep very well with the passive bass. My main complaint with this pedal is that it absolutely kills the lows in your sound. Quite trebely sounding, which in my opinion is about the worst sin a bass pedal can commit. Pretty cool, I suppose, if you are going for a really wild effect, but for something a bit more "natural" sounding this is not the pedal. Not really the Bootsy/Flea effect I was expecting, for that I would look to a E/H Bass Balls. (or a Mutron III if I had that kind of money laying around) Sounded the best when I was slapping and no longer really cared about my tone, and the sweep on the pop is sweet enough to make you forget that all of your lows have gone bye bye.

Guitarists: this will alter your tone, so dialing in subtle settings will take a bit of fiddling. Twisting the knobs even just a little bit will make pretty dramatic changes. Editing is easy, there are only two knobs. Works best with a hotter input, which might explain the raves from bassists & boos from guitarists. This one was used, so no manual. Took me about 10 minutes of experimentation to get its vibe. Using a compressor with it helps tremendously. This is not a "buy it on your way to the gig" pedal.

I used the FX25 with (a.) ~1940ish Epiphone Zephyr Archtop with a big DeArmond pickup custom mounted at the neck, and (b.) a mid-70's Ibanez Artist. I put the FX25 in my stompbox chain, after my DynaComp & overdrive pedals, and before my Delay. These go more or less into a late 60's Fender Twin (no master vol). The Epi with the DeArmond is approximately 2-3 times the output power of a strat, so the FX25 had a lot of signal strength to work with. It did OK, but I found its low end sweep to get too huge; the Epi has huge bottom-end already. I switched to the Artist, which is less powerful, but more powerful than say, a les paul. I got the best results with this. The FX25 requires a little time-investment to get the best results. You have to adjust your playing and its settings into a benefical compromise. It's the first Envelope Filter I've tried (after a Boss Auto-Wah, which was terrible), and it's not too bad. I'd like to be able to adjust more settings. It's on loan from the local guitar shop while I check it out. Haven't decided whether to buy it yet. Sound quality is OK- not noisy, but it does some tonal alterations. Boss stuff does this too. It's up to you to decide whether that's acceptable or not.

I play in 2 original bands now: in a trio best compared to Cream, and in a folk-pop band behind a female singer/acoustic guitarist. I was hoping to do some different stuff with this type of pedal like funky baritone phrases or the Edie Brickell "What I Am" thing. Don't know if I'll buy it yet. I'd like to try some others. I bought a Boss AW-2 Auto-Wah, and hated it after 20 minutes. I'm not interested in doing wah type stuff with the FX25. I have a crybaby for that. In general, this is a pretty good pedal. It is helping break my prejudice against DOD, but I don't know if it's the pedal I want yet. However, I find it to sound pretty good. It seems reliable and works well.

There's two knobs - Range and Sensitivity - so all you have to do is screw with them and you get cool sounds. The manual is kinda useless, because this box is a funky auto wah, and it's difficult to go wrong with one. This unit's been updated to the FX25-B with a blend knob which controls the clean and effect mix, but the two boxes are basically the same.

Actually, this is my friend's box, and he uses it on his homemade bass. He uses my Peavey KB/A 100 amp with the eq set to about 3/4 all around. It sounds really good all the time, provided you use it in the right context of music. Don't expect to find an application for this effect if you play any thrash metal or shit like that. This box sounds excellent used in funk music, like RHCP or DAG or bands like that. My friend bought this because he heard and saw Flea (from RHCP) use it on an instructional video. Flea kicks ass. He also uses it on "The Power of Equality" on the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, so if you want to hear it, check that song out.
This is a level independent effect, meaning the harder you play, the more dramatic wah you get. It's not ever noisy, unless you have a cheapo amp, and then it's noisy when the wah gets real open, but it doesn't go there unless thou should have the "Range" set all da way up, hence I give it a 9. One time, he and I took my BF-2 Boss flanger and the FX25 and combined them = Absolutely the funkiest-ass sound I ever heard. Try adding a distortion and an octaver to this thing!!

I don't know. It's not my box, ask my friend. Yeah, it seems reliable. It's well built, almost like a Boss. We've not gigged all that much using it, but it hasn't failed during practice, so sure, we'd depend on it. I give this one a 9 because I don't know as well as he would.

This is a great box for funk and some rock music. If you wanna know the rest, ask my friend, because he would know. I like it. It sounds really cool for the music we play (difficult to describe, it's catchy hard rock with a little alt-rock and funk influence). If you aren't a fan of the wah, don't even bother, but if you like funk or Flea or shit like that, this is a must!

Fairly easy to figure out. It just has two knobs; Range and Sensitivity. Unfortunatly it's not as easy to get a good sound.

I bought this thing because I saw a video on bass playing by Flea, and he said he uses it. I don't see how he gets the sounds that he does out of it. I have a Fender fretless jazz bass and a BXR100 amp, and I couldn't find any settings that remotly sounded like Sir Psycho Sexy. The effect is very thin when slaped, and it has a huge volume boost when it sweeps to the low end.

Overall it's not the worst effect I've used, but I'd deffinetly pay more and get a better envelope filter. It was funky if not as funky as Flea...but then again, who is? I might buy the new DOD envelope filter because it has a blend knob. Maybe that way I could thicken up my sound and still get the funk effect.

It only has two knobs. Range and Sensitivity. Getting a good sound is easy. If you play two finger style bass, it can be hard to use. One reason is that the DOD needs a strong input signal for it to react. Anoter reason is that it "dips" every once in a while as if one was stepping down on a wah. The "dip" occurs consistanly, so it's easy to adjust your playing. Just don't try to sustain many notes.

The FX-25 is quiet. It's hard to use with other effects because it is so radical. This wah is really greasy and wet. It is not a subtle wah at all. Some people think this effect sounds silly. It does but that's what's cool about it.

Being an autowah, it's good for funk. It works good on guitar and bass(I play both). On guitar, I like to use it for single note parts and not on chords so much. If you want to know a good autowah that sounds great on guitar, check out the Guyatone Wah Rocker. On bass, I use it for thumpin, and pluckin. I compared the FX-25 to other envelope filters and none of them sound like this one. If you already have an envelope filter you love, check the DOD out anyway. It sounds quite unique.

The FX-25 isn't that noisy. For bass, I only use it for slap because it needs a strong input signal to really wah. I have used it for recording several times and it sounds cool. Also for Bootsy Collins fans, he uses these in addition to his Mutrons.

I have a MutronIII+, Boss Dynamic Filter and Guyatone Bass Wah. The The Boss and the Guyatone are pretty much obsolete now because they basically sound like cheaper versions of the Mutron. The DOD FX-25, however, sounds nothing like a Mutron. It can get wilder and wetter than the Mutron. It has it's own unique sound. So if you like envelope filters, get one. Plus, it's a bargain.

Well,First off let me say I bought this not knowing exactly what to expect..When I unwrapped it and plugged in I was expecting some cool wah effects, what I got was a "that's all" reaction..It was on sale for $50 I think. I actually liked the effect, but it's so one-dimensional I wouldn't pay $50..maybe if it was $20 I'd have kept it..You have to pluck your guitar string way too hard to get a strong wah sound,it'd be better for bass players

I used this with an Ibanez RG770DX and Peavey Bandit 112 through both the dirty and clean channels..DO NOT use this thing with Distortion,it does not work..I couldn't figure out how to use it with my effects processor either..like I stated before, you have to play the strings extremely hard to produce ANY effect..

Ok, I heard a lot about being thin, bla bla bla. You have to have good dynamics to use this pedal. It's all in how hard you play. It's not that this pedal is thin, or too expressive, you just have to watch how hard you play. If you have mastered the art of dynamics love to play funk, this is the pedal for you.

It is moronically simple, there are only sensitivity and range controls.
Sound Quality

The envelope sweep is very drastic (heavy WAH-low end) unless the range control is almost turned off. The sensitivity dial is really queer since the only way to get any wah sound is to have it almost cranked. Many guitars with low output pickups can't send enough signal to release the sensitivity setting which causes cutting out. The boss auto wah and the mutron III are the only auto filters that can produce dynamic wah tones with lower input. The boss auto wah is suck, though, because the wah is very trebley. The mutron is the best. The ibanez auto wah is the next best- it requires a medium level input to get an envelope sweep, but has great sound (especially for something that looks like a friggin plastic cheese ball). The bypass mode also sucks a little bit of tone from the fx25. The only useable sensitivity setting, which is high, causes the wah to sound really nasal and wimpy. If you have really hot pickups (humbuckers, double coils) this thing could work for you if you desire a drastic filter sweep. The ibanez is a better low cost, more sweet sounding pedal. If you want to spend 300-400$ then go for a vintage mutronIII. There is a mutron III+ reissue, but it is the same solid state crap that produces the flimsy wah sound in some of these other cheaper autowahs, but costs 350$. The fx25 may have it's place in your pedal setup if you need strong low end wahs and have a high output guitar.

Like I said, it may have some usefulness but if you use alot of dynamic filter effects go for the vintage mutron III and you won't be sorry. This thing seems more appropriate for a garage band of pimpley teens than a musician. If the input sensitivity issue could be resolved, it might be ok- but since the green box hasn't changed in many years I don't anticipate any useful changes being made to this thing in our lifetime. Also- DOD filter technology in the newer digitech RP multiprocessors addresses some of the input problems, but the wah is really pathetic. Go figure..

While it's not the most subtle envelope filter I've heard, it gets the job done. A little more extreme than most, but it does it well. Actually reduces hum from my bass, probably because the filter cuts the treble.

While it's not the greatest envelope around, it's definitely worth the price. It's not expernsive, and it's quiet and reliable. While it's not as flexible as any of the Boss filters (AW-2, FT-2, TW-1, all of which I recommend by the way), it does its own thing. A trick for bass players: turn the left knob all the way up and the right knob all the way down, and you get that great, bassy Motown flatwound sound. This makes it almost worth the price. For those into weirdness for its own sake, this thing make some really WILD sounds when used with distortion boxes.

I found this effect to be really weak. It was cutting down the signal so much that it wasn't worth using. I thought it might work better in my amp's effects loop but it was only a bit better. It just sounds like a toy.. not a real usable effect. Bass players seem to like it but on my strat it's useless.

The signal is very week and it takes all the life out of my guitar. Even on the weakest settings not enough signal is getting through to the amp.
