Hi.
This a really cool and easy to use analog delay.
You can dial the sound that you have in your mind in 30 seconds, tops.
Mine has an upgraded discontinued chip but i guess the stock one sounds as good as mine.

Mind that it has delay time around 380 ms,of course its a lot of time for an analog delay but be careful before you buy one of these,if you need a crystal, cold, way too perfect, not organic sounding unit with 600+ delay time that doesnt color your sound buy a DD-3 it should fit to your preferences!

Sound Quality : 9
I'm playing 80's style Hard Rock with lots of leads and harmonies.
My guitars are equipped with hi output pickups(JB a Nailbomb and a FullShred)and i'm playing through an old Laney AOR series I 30W with the stock Celestion G35L 12",an analogman DOD 250,a DOD FX30,a Boston tuner,a Volume pedal,an MXR 6 band EQ and the FX90 Delay.

First of all it doesnt matter if you're using a digital or an analog delay,YOU MUST use these effects within your effects loop otherwise they sound terrible.

As a unit this pedal its not noisy at all, from 1 to 10 its a 9 in this section.

If you're playing with lots of gain dont expect to hear crystal clear slapback from an analog delay..Try a DD-3 or something digital.

This pedal can color your sound in a good way,it is able to add another layer of your guitar signal when it is enganged and it can make you sound like you're playing with another guitarist in the same room, its that good!
A good analog delay just like the one we're reviewing is a must have for nailing fat, sweet sounding leads and full sounding melodic lines.
Compared to the DD-3 is like comparing a solid state amp with a tube amp!
Sure tube amps are not perfect, they're harder to play compared to a tranzistor amp but they sound amazing..Warm,full and responsive but not perfect..This is what you get with an analog delay, sweet organic sounds, warmer than any digital delay but keep in mind that they're not perfect, they are not that easy to play with and they can color your sound but in a amazingly good way!!

Reliability : 9
No problems at all.
These old DODs are like the most reliable pedals i've ever had.

As i told above i'm playing 80's style Hard Rock, with lots of melodies, old school riffs and extended lead lines.
This stompbox is a major aspect of my sound,i mean without it i'm loosing around 50% of it.I'm addicted to it..:)

I'd hit another one if its stolen, thats for sure.
Maybe i'd buy another one right know that they're still cheap because my 2 cents are that this pedal is within the top 5 of sleeper stompboxes around.
Come again in 5 years and tell me how much you bought it..

i've read all the glowing reviews here, but i have some issues, so i won't go into praise, suffice it to say i have been using it for years, so i like the sound.

The footswitch is extremely pesky, i have to keep this one on my amp where i can use my hand to punch the switch at least 3-4 times to get it to operate.

the knobs are terrible. they have inserts (see picture)http://www.flickr.com/photos/zummo/3080390234/sizes/l/

that fall out, so it is impossible to see where it is set. i had to replace one with a homemade thing and glue them all in with crazy glue. they would always end up at the bottom of my bag. i lost one.

the paint wore off so there was no way to tell which knobs did what, hence the addition of embossing tape labels.

bought new in 1985ish for 75 bucks. it ate batteries at 1st, needed a new one every time i used it. for some reason they last much longer now even though i use it more (at least 6-8 hours/week)

it can be noisy, with delay signal being a little fuzzy.

i run it pretty much all the time, with the delay at the 1 oclock position. its the last thing in my signal chain into the amp.

i was not aware of the trim pots until reading reviews here. so i will mess with them.

Reliability : 4
not totally dependable. the switch doesn't always work. the battery light can still be strong even when the battery is dead and the sound is bad.

i recently got a Boss DD3 as a backup and now it has become my main one

its good for adding a little depth, or slap back. not good for high feedback repeats.

been using it on and off for almost 20 years.

its great! tight analog sound. I have been a dd5 and 6 dude all the way til I found it, but this thing sounds great. different sound and feel. The pedal doesn't mess with my tone or volume when in use. I'm playing it through a mesa boogie dual rectifier, with a slew of pedals, through an Ibanez 421.

Reliability : 8
its cool... dependable? yes.

who needs that?

I must say it was a great pick up for only 60u.s. bucks. Comparable to using a Boss dd-3... Only if the sound of the dd-3 was translated as blue, then the fx90 would be red.

not hard to operate at all, but fiddling with the internal trimpot can take some time.

Sound Quality : 9
holy smokes! this thing sounds insanely good for a dod pedal. i know someone who has an old (and very beat up) boss dm-2. those go for hundreds, but really don't sound any better than these. this is a great analog delay, especially when you consider how much these usually go for second hand. also the trimpot inside gives you extra possibilities, although as soon as you make the delay time a bit longer it will sound significantly worse real quick. that's still fun for people like me who like to make space-cadet music as well as traditional bluesy and rocky stuff (think beatles meets boredoms!)

Reliability : 6
we all know that the dod switches are not the most reliable.........

i really don't like handing out a 10. it means it's perfect. this pedal is certainly not perfect. but for the 20 euros i paid for it this is a killer deal. it's a 9,5.

Not as easy as say a volume pedal or a one knob pedal but it's the basic delay pedal. three knobs that effect rate, the signal mix, and number of repeats. if you want to fool around with the pot inside it gets a little more difficult but i found it easy to use after reading about it a little bit and i'm not electronics expert.

Sound Quality : 9
I really think it's perfect for that simple echo delay. This is the first analog delay i have tried. but compared to the boss me-20's delay this thing is by far superior. i love the thickness to it, it takes your original guitar notes and repeats them without any loss in tone, at least to my ears thats what it sounds like. and yeah, i would say it has a dark feel to it. not very bright, but this thing is perfect for the sound i want. the echo delay is perfect i think. the sound quality would be a 10 but i dont think its fair for me to give it a 10 without trying the other analog boss and ibanez delay stomps.

Reliability : 6
mine is in good condition, but those old dod pedals are shitty man. the actual part you stomp on to engage is like this shitty plastic piece thats too sensitive. but dont get me wrong. mine is old and its still in good condition, im just baseing my judgement on old dod pedals in general. i had a eq pedal that just fell apart every time i used it. for the price though i wouldnt judge to harshly if its already in good condition.

Overall Rating : 10
i play rock, with some metal, and i mean i like reggae and jazz so ill jam around on whatever but i have a heavey sound. this thing adds a great echo for certain leads but even when playing power chords or open chords with distortion it sounds good. the actual long delays are really good too. just open it up and fool around with the pots and get the longer delays. if you are looking at those boss dm-2s and shit i would reccomend getting this for the cheaper price. i dont see how those other similar analog delay pedals could be much better. plus this thing has its own dark sound. give me dat donkey butt.

Barbada.

?? excelente pra bases e solos.

Tocos a 21 anos e j?? tive muitos equipamentos musicais.

Adjust it for what you want to hear!!

Sound Quality : 10
This may be funny! I had this pedal for over 20 years, bought it new in 1985, played around with it, and put it on the shelf!! I played metal and hard rock then!! I actually thought I bought a DIGITAL delay,(they were the ticket in the 80's) ya right!!
So, now I play blues/rockabilly and my harp player buddy brings me his boss dm-3, I loved it!! Set it at minimal for a "tone thickener", of lengthen the delay for alittle Danny Gatton slapback rockabilly, GREAT!! But $200 on ebay!! So I'm looking around for hours, considered getting a cmatmods deelay (great sounding pedal)or an ibanez, then I discover on harmony central reviews that my fx-90 is an ANALOG DELAY, not digital!! I ran out to my studio, grabbed the fx-90 and pwr. supply, plugged in my strat(rio grand muy macho pickups), into the fx-90, into my Rivera M-60 2x12, fooled around with the knobs and had complete analog delay bliss!!!
This nails the Danny Gatton style slapback when played clean, or with a slight overdrive!!
This pedal ROCKS!! I feel like an idiot for NOT using it all these years!!
I set the delay at 9:00, the mix and repeat at 12:00 for a nice "thickening effect" to keep on all the time (especially for solos)
I remember as a kid watching Rock School on pbs, Gary Moore was demonstrating pedals and they were all Boss! His tone was KILLER, after he finished, the chick guitar player (host) said he ALSO was using analog delay the whole time!! It was a boss dm-2 I believe! I don't know how I never made the connection that a delay can "thicken" your sound up!! It does seem to add some high end, not in a bad way, just sort of "glistening"!!
Just move the delay to 12:00 for classic rockabilly slapback.
I mean this slapback is KILLER, close your eyes and picture Scotty Moore in the studio in 1953 with a big 'ol Gibson slapback!! I don't know how I've played Mystery Train for 20 years without it!!! Just a world of difference!
Slightly below 12:00 for shorter, slightly above 12:00 for longer delay!!
That's the only 2 settings I'll ever need to use!!
You could crank the delay and repeat way up for that David Gilmore vibe also, this pedal does that very well! Excellent!! I'll CRANK IT UP TO 11 for not having to spend $200!!!

Reliability : 10
Well it's already 20 years old,and works like new!!
My only gripe: you have to glue the pointers to the knobs, they are 2 seperate pieces!!! The pointers spin around and you don't know your settings!! Just set the knobs all at zero, then crank the pointer "discs" to zero while holding the knobs in place, a small dab of 5 minute epoxy will fix it for good!!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Don't know, but I hear it's good, and made in the USA!!

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing guitar for over 25 years and have aquired alot of nice gear (Rivera M-60, Leslie 16 rotating speaker, etc...)
I won't hesitate to play out with this "crappy little dod", what's funny is, other than my Thomas Organ Co. crybaby(best wah ever made), this fx-90 is my only other effets pedal!!!
What does that say!!!!
If it were lost, I would buy 2, they are the only analog delay that the price isn't through the roof on!! I don't know why DOD isn't as prestigous as boss or ibanez, but this delay rivals any others that I've heard!

This pedal is easy to use, if you don't have to open it up and adjust the trim pots. (I'm so glad others have mentioned this because it made my pedal much much better.) If you have to adjust the inside trim pots, just take off the bottom of the pedal and very carefully use a small screwdriver. For my model (not sure of the year, but it's not the oldest version) the left and right trim pots are blue, and the middle one is black (left=input jack when the peddle is upside down; right=output jack). The left one adjusts the quality of the signal (around 12 o'clock works well for me). The middle black one adjust the repeats (I can't turn this one all the way up or my amp explodes, but after ajusting I can get infinate repeats!! fun!!!). And the right blue one adjusts the delay time. Now I was able to get surprisingly long delay times while adjusting this (not to mention really crazy pitch/delay time shifting if you adjust it between the longest and shortest delay times- if you mess with it you'll figure out what I mean). The problem with the really long delay times is that it added this high pitched crunchy sort of hiss to the delay signal. From my understanding, this comes from the BBD chip. But I'm no electrical engineer. Still, though, I'm able to get the sort of delay times you'd expect from an analog pedal, without weired sounds. I spent over an hour adjusting mine to where I like it. In any case, open it up and expand the possibilities of this little treat of a pedal.

Sound Quality : 9
I have a taco tele (great guitar, great price!), Carvin DC-135, G&L F-100 through a Univox (the old 100 watt tube head that Jeff Beck used to play, but modded with a master volume) and a crappy four twelve cabinet. I use a newer tube screamer, blues driver, boss ce-3 chorus (though I keep meaning to get the much warmer ce-2), and a volume pedal.

Don't let the DOD name scare you away. This thing sounds great. I love analog delay. I have a digital delay, but I always stomp on this thing instead. Who really needs 2+ seconds of delay anyways? I give it a nine because I've only been able to compare it to my friends old Ross analog delay. I actually like this one better because the Ross destroys your signal (it gets much quieter). So much so that my friend is has to use it with two amps. One gets the delay signal, the other is dry. This sounds great, but I know I don't have two amps. The FX90 works great in mono (no stereo option). And this thing's much cheaper!

Reliability : 9
Mine's gotta be from the 80's and it's still working great. I haven't had it that long, though, so I go with the 9.

Customer Support : No Opinion
never contacted them.

Overall Rating : 10
I play in a proggy band (think King Crimson meets Steely Dan!) and a good old fashioned pop rock band (Queens, Foo fighters, ZZ Top, Sunny Day). Works great for both. I could also see this working well for some rock-a-billy slap back or as a subtle reverby type effect for more mellow styles. Not to mention getting crazy whacked out feed back sounds in a pscyhedelic setting (adjust your trim pots!).

I've been playing for about 13 years now (jesus, when did I get old!). I usually don't go for a lot of effects, but this thing's great because it melts into your tone. It doesn't sound artificial in your rig.

Get one now while they're still cheap (they stopped making the BBD chips, so I imagine all analog delays will become harder to get).

Overall, it's cheap and sounds great.

It's easiness is relative because there is a problem in the pedal configuration that I will relate.

Sound Quality : 9
My current set is: Epiphone SG G-400 with humbuckers Duncan 59 (neck) and Bill Lawrence (bridge) --> Dunlop GCB-95 Cry wah wah --> Boss SD-1 --> Yamaha OD-10MII Overdrive --> DOD FX90 --> Palmer 40w tube amplifier. For a analog pedal it's sound is great, clean.

Reliability : 8
It's very hard made, except for the plastic foot switch and battery cover, but I've used DODs for years and I have never had problems with them. The most common is battery covers broken, what only affects the pedal aesthetically.

I Have been playing since 1984, and nowadays I'm playing mostly a kind of dirty blues, with some punk and stoner influence.

If the FX90 pedal was lost I would probably look for another one. I love this pedal. I had a Boss DD-3 for almost 20 years and I was really bored by its sound.

One thing IMPORTANT about the FX90 however - and one of its problems - is the fact that sometimes it must be calibrated (manually) to work well and to show all its potential.

I've read some reviews complaining of it's "crap sound". But one user that praised the pedal (cjonesplay at 09/08/2004) said that there are three adjustable pieces in the pedal that can be turned with a little screwdriver, that change the repetition rate and feedback.

Maybe in the years of hard use these pieces go to a wrong position, ruining the pedal sound. That was my case. So I oppened the pedal and calibrated it.

I realized that if the first unit on the left, marked 50k, is not in the proper position, the sound becomes distorted and the pedal really sounds like crap. My pedal sound was muddy and distorted, but after I adjusted this 50k piece the sound become much better, and I've got the real FX90, with a clean analogic sound.

I got it in 95' at a pawnshop . I have to use electrical spray on it once a year or it will sound like a moog with a crybaby witch is cool but,not all the time.It does it's job for the most part.I use it for one part for a song so I don't always use it at every gig .
sometimes it never gets packet. But, it's done it's job for 10 years for me.I just don't use effects that much anymore.

I don't realy care . You might need aback up if your sound depends on it. but, wether you buy this pedal or a different delay you should have a back up if your sound is based on delay.
