Any brain-dead guitarist or keyboardist could operate this delay. It has speed, effect and repeat knobs. Manual not needed. Plug it in and play. very simple.

Sound Quality : 10
The analog delay is a pedal that is supposed to degrade a bit with repeating delays. This pedal does this so it rates a 10 soundwise. There are more expensive pedals out there that don't sound any better.

Reliability : 7
It is very dependable, but, I bought it used for $12 at a pawn shop. It didn't work. It sat on a shelf for 2 years, then I decided to rob the 9V battery connection for a different pedal. The other pedal didn't work with that connection, which is when I figured out the problem. This had a bad connector. So I put a good one on it from Radio Shack and the rest is history. Sounds great, and was a great deal!

Customer Support : 9
Never have dealt with DOD although they have manual downloads which is nice, so I'll give them a good rating.

Overall Rating : 10
I play anything from space music to jazz and alternative. It works great. If it were stolen I'd probably move on, but this pedal is every bit as good as any vintage Ibanez delay. It does the modulation effects by turning the speed and feedback controls, so it is a great analog effect. It hangs with the best of them.

You got a delay, mix and repeat knob. The delay adjusts the amount of delay you want in your sound, from about 60-300 milliseconds. The mix basically just adjusts the amount of the effect you want in your signal, and the repeat adjusts the amount of echos you want, from just a basic slapback echo to infinite repeat. So it takes a little tweaking to get a hang for it, but it's relatively easy.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using a yamaha rgx612a and a kustom amp. The pedal doesn't seem very noisy to me, unless everything's cranked, then it's just pure chaos. It's a very versatile pedal, it can get a short slapback delay to fatten up a lead tone, or some pretty insane ambient tones if I want.

I think the pedal sounds best with clean tones, I can get some very nice sustained chord tones, almost synth like with volume swells. It's a very warm pedal too, and the repeats sound very clear and still have that nice analog tone, I don't know what everybody is complaining about.

Some of the sounds I can get out of this pedal are very weird. With the repeat knob cranked I can get an infinite repeat echo, and I can bend the pitch of the repeated note(s)at the same time with the delay knob. Some really tripped out sounds can be made with this pedal.

Reliability : 9
No problems with it yet, seems reliable. I'd gig with it.

Never dealt with DOD.

I play everything from metal to fusion to classic rock and this pedal is great for everything I play. If this were stolen I'd get another one for sure. What I like about this pedal best is what It does with clean arpeggios and chords, it really sounds great and adds a ton of vibe and ambience, it really inspires my playing.

3 knobs - all basic:
Delay knob lengthens the time between delays
Mix adds the delayed signal to the origingal (dry/wet)
Repeat lengthens the number of repetitions.

Sound Quality : 9
One important thing I noticed is that when opening up the pedal I found three adjustable pieces that significantly alter the pot controls.
I have never heard of anyone else mentioning this before, so here are the details: They are black, thin, wheel-shaped units with tiny white arrows in the middle which can be turned with a small screwdriver. I can't figure out what the first one (Labeled 50K 716) on the left does. If I turn it the delay effect gets cut off completely. The second unit (2K2 712) increases the delay time and the third one (1M 439)increases the repetition. By turning both of these up you can increase the delay time AND get longer repeats (even infinite feedback!). This makes the pedal useable for those who don't have a digital delay and want a little longer feedback time.
Being able to control the pedal makes a world of difference. I expect this pedal to continue to develop a stronger cult following because of it's dark, depressing sound and unique oscillating effect.

I have used this pedal for years, not even knowing that it was cool to use an analog delay. I always wanted a digital one. I finally bought a Boss DD6 and am now using both the FX90 and Boss for different uses.

The analog sound is very dirty and rich. Lots of swirls and white noise in the high repetition modes. It does the rockabilly delay and the ambient reverb-type sounds well. Gets a little muddy if you add too much repetition over a solo. It is also hard to dial in settings because the knobs are so sensitive. The upside is that this sensitivity gives you a wide range of sounds to choose from.

Overall, this pedal is very unique, although a bit limiting. If you want versatility, buy a digital delay. If you know you want a dark analog sound, then this pedal does it better than most would imagine (especially for the money). I give it a 9, not an 8, because of the fact that you can adjust the pot settings and they are cheap.

Reliability : 5
This pedal, like every one else says, is complete garbage. The soldering is subpar, the footswitch sucks, and the knobs are always falling off. I wish there was any easy way to install a new footswitch like the fulltone stompswitch. If you have any ideas, please send me an email or post it here.

Never dealt with them, but other DOD pedals I have had are shit and broken. How is this company still in business with competition like Boss and Ibanez?

Overall Rating : 8
I use this pedal to make wierd noises. It's also great for Johnny Cash-style backing rhythm and some Pink Floyd "Echoes" type-Delay. It makes a good ambient delay for use with other effects when you don't want to get too busy. Strangely versatile, yet not great enough to be on all the time. My all time favorite sleeper pedal, and I am lucky enough to already have one from when I was a kid. In a few years you will start seeing the prices go up on these, especially when Analong Mike or Keeley start getting their hands on them for cheap and modding them. If any you guys know those two masterminds, ask them if they can come up with a way to replace the DOD footswitch for cheap and once and for all!

Ease of Use : 10
These old DOD Analog delay pedals are as easy to use as it gets and they sound as good or better than any vintage Ibanez or Maxon delay of the same style, such as the three knob variety with delay, mix and repeat. I've owned every one of them including a cool old yellow Boss analog delay but nowadays you'll spend hundreds on these overhyped so called vintage pieces. The fact is one analog delay is basically the same as another and to tell the difference between them is sonically impossible to the human ear. Anyone who says they can must be using some killer kona, but then it's all good then. Also, when you hear people complain about noisy analog delays or analog stompboxes in general, then they're missing the point. Analog has a warmth and character that is suited to the hands-on guitarist who appreciates the sonic nuances and touch qualities of analog gear. The trouble is getting ahold of the Bucket Brigade chips used in these old analog units and that's what's driving up the price. DOD has unfairly gotten a reputation based on quality but no manufacturer uses any different manufacturing techniques on their pedals. Face it, today they're all junk and they weren't much better back then. These old DOD FX90 analog delays are a great buy and if you can get one now for under $150 you're doing great, because people are discovering how sweet they are.

Sound Quality : 10
I use this with a Peavey Wolfgang and a Peavey 5150 combo with huge tone and crushing overdriven chords. The DOD FX90 is usually set to a short sort of slap back delay to add to the speed of solos and the mix set all the way up to capture the full analog tone. Repeat is usually set very low to control the repeats and flavor of the solos. Manually moving the delay knob of course creates cool sweeping changes in the delay tone and lowering the mix knob will diminish the delay effect but add color for less distorted tones and more ringing clean tones coupled with reverb helps. The 5150 has an understated spring reverb so the delay is not overwhelmed and comes through all that much better with lower reverb settings. The DOD FX90 is not a noisy pedal and I always laugh when I see posts here that refer to the inherent nature of analog pedals as noisy. The DOD FX90 is as solidly built an analog delay as any Made in Japan Ibanez or Maxon piece from the early 1980's plus the DOD is made in the USA. The DOD FX90 is for players who love the subtle nuances of analog gear, it's like the difference between a good tube amp and some transistor heap.

Reliability : 10
I've used this DOD FX90 for years and it's strong as ever. Most pedals don't just die accept from abuse and usually the stompboxes can easily be repaired if you look inside and eliminate the culprit, usually jacks or worn wire. Chips and boards are remarkably durable and that's what matters on these vintage delays. Delays in general are very reliable and do not require backups and that goes for the DOD FX90 as well.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never called DOD.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing since about 1979 or so so that's when a lot of these so called vintage Ibanez or Maxon and Boss pedals got there vintage heritage. Back then they were all the same over the counter pieces of shit only now they're even worse. That's why these are so desirable now. This DOD FX90 is easily better than those other vintage pedals because it's a better value with the same quality. DOD suffers from an undeserved bad rap, one bad poster who thinks it's too noisy or DOD customer service wouldn't give em something free and they start whining. I've always looked for tone and unique sound qualities in all my gear that's why the DOD FX90 is such a bargain, try and get the same thing out of Ibanez, Maxon or old Boss analog gear for under say $250-300 and maybe more nowadays. The DOD FX90 rocks for classic rock styles which is what I lean to and obviously can give sweet analog delay whenever this type of effect is desired at a fraction of the cost, at least for now.

Very easy, three knobs for delay, mix and repeat.

Sound Quality : 6
I give this a six because while it sounds good it does not self-oscillate, which is why I bought it. I did try to adjust the trim pots but got nothing. This is the model with the name on the right so watch out if this is what you are looking for. I'll probably dump it for $25 on eBay tomorrow. Very disappointing delay.

Seems built to last.

I would recommend this delay for anyone seeking short, warm repeats. It's a good pedal for this but that's about it. If you like the "UFO" effect ask before you buy because they do not all do this.

Way easy! Just three knobs, Speed Blend Repeat. Very easy to dial in delay effects to get you inspired. The Speed knob is a bit strange though, it didn't have much effect between 7 oclock and 10 oclock, until that is, I adjusted the internal pot (variable cap?) that increased the delay time a couple more 100ms. Now it has more of an effect on the longer delay times. Some have said increasing the max delay time ruins the sound quality, bah, didn't notice any real difference. Besides, this is an analog delay, it sounds best as more of an echo anyway. If you want perfect repeats go buy a Digital delay pedal. Funny thing is that when these were new pedals they were considered more as a cheap delay because they were cheaper to make than the new digital delays. Not everyone could afford over $200 for a DD-2 in the 80's so this was another option. Now it is a different story, most people know that the analog type delay is just more musical.

Sound Quality : 10
I just love this thing. I have had a DD-2 for over 10 years and have always kinda disliked the attack the repeats have when I play muted notes or staccato strumming. So I even resorted to running the pedal in stereo and ran the effected out through an eq to soften the edge. This DOD pedal is exactly what I have been looking for in a delay. It inspires me and helps me create. It is completely musical, the delays are still fairly clear at first then they start to soften as they fade. It does a great slapback delay on the shorter settings, but I don't really use that. I use the long soft echos on my guitar parts for either the rythmic effect or as a type of reverb. I really don't care for reverb on my guitar cause it makes it go too far into the background. If I use my analog delay set on long delays with the mix set fairly low it gives me a roominess and ambience without loosing presence. Sure there is a bit of analog circuit noise, mostly just when turn it on. This is my most important pedal, because it actually helps me be creative. Most of my pedals like chorus's flangers, and OD's help flavor my sound. This delay makes me play better. This pedal also can do that self oscillation thing that some people like. I tweaked one of the other pots so that it not only goes into self oscillation, it goes into it faster. The way it was stock you had to max the regen and then play something to get it started. With the pot tweaked it now just takes off when I max the knob.

A great delay, I don't know why anyone would pay top dollar for a Boss or Ibanez Analog delay when these are just fantastic for much less money. I heard that the BBD chips were no longer being made which was driving up the price of analog delays. Well, I just read there is a company that has been manufacturing the chips again for the last couple years. So who knows.

Noisy tone killing piece of sh*t!
I have paired this pedal with other analog delay pedals and although they can never capture the trueness of a real tape delay, they, for the most part, do a pretty good job. However this DOD junk(as is the case with practically all DOD pedals) sounds pretty bad, especially when it all fades not to an echo, but a hissing sound!

Reliability : 10
Had it about 14 years now. Still sounds as sh*tty now as it did then!

Never dealt with them

I have been playing for about 20 years now mainly rock & blues. I bought this pedal as well as the DOD FX-75B Flanger(another peice of sh*t!) when I was much younger and needed some effects to accent my playing. Don't do as I did! It will be worth it to spend a liitle extra for a better sounding pedals. DOD's sister company Digi-Tech makes effects that are only marginally better. If you are very tone consious and have no tolerance for noisy effects, dont waste your time with these DOD/Digi-Tech clowns. Please, shop around! You'll be glad you did!

This is a rather old pedal. I got it used of ebay, which I think is probably the main source for this item nowadays. It is a pretty straight forward pedal. Pretty hard to mess up. The repeats start stacking up towards the high side of the knob, which may bother some people.

Sound Quality : 9
I have really grown to like the sound of this pedal. I prefer to use it to make washes of sound with a rhodes, and it works well for this. When fed a very hot signal it reacts wonderfully. I'm not sure if all of the fx90s are like this, but mine tends to completely flip out with all sorts of strange distortions a whines in this situation. Lots of fun. If you are more of a fan of clean echo of any sort I wouldn't really recommend this one. Not extremely flexible, but the sounds you can get out of it are fantastic.

Reliability : 7
my first fx90 has started having some pretty major issues. When I operate the switch now the pitch the signal often drops significantly at first. I can work around this and kind of like it for some situations. Still, it would be nice to have this as an option, rather that an all the time thing. Also, the pitch will go nuts if I touch the pedal anyway, which can be fun. Oh well, I think the fx90 was made in the mid 80's , and DOD doesn't have the most pristine quality record. Also, I took it on tour for five months, and I was pretty rowdy and not necessarily careful with anything in my life during that time. That had to have messed it up. Anyway, they are cheap and pretty easy to replace.

I have already bought another one. This is a really neat item, and definitely worth checking out if you are interested in analog delays. If you are willing to chunk down 100+ for a dm3 you should at least consider tossing down the 30 or so bucks it will cost you for an fx90. Look past the DOD thing. This is a really good. Cheap. Good.

very dark and not so clean, I can describe it like a shadowy reverb. I feel its a original sound. Try it! I have the first edition so I cant self osicillate, but i dont care about that anyway. I have a few space echos, a dm2, and some other stuff, but this is original (and useable)enough to merit a place in my collection.I love it!

I got this baby off eBay and its really clean! Could not beat it for the price. Been playing a long time and own tons of gear and this is one of the best bargains I have ever run across. Totally musical gadget with lots of pro quality packed into it without the "pro" price. I love these FX-90 pedals, perhaps one of DOD's best pedals ever made. I would buy another in a flash if this was lost or stolen. They are getting rarer and harder to find but the FX-90 is the real thang folks. If you find one, buy it.
