This is a very basic 3 knob, analog delay; Delay, Mix and Repeat. Total delay time is about 1/3rd of a second.
Sound Quality
:8
The overall sound quality of this unit is very good. It does a great job of making rockabilly style slap-echos. Longer, repeating delays are pretty good too, though be careful with the repeat knob. The effect quickly 'runs away' if it's set much past 8 or 9. The quality of the repeats are sharp; they're more natural and less grainy than a Danelectro PB&J, for instance.
Re: noise, I was surprised by the LACK of it after reading the reviews below. It DOES alter the tone of my guitar somewhat when inline and disengaged, but not terribly - if anything, it makes the guitar brighter.
Reliability
:8
I've noticed the pots on DOD pedals are often scratchy and in need of cleaning. Perhaps this is due to DOD's poorly designed battery cover that frequently falls off, exposing the innards to dust, etc. Besides that, it's a well built unit.

Given the crazy prices people are paying for vintage Ibanez and Boss analog delays, this is a true bargain. FX90's can be picked on eBay for less than $50 easily. Compare that to Boss DM-2 or Ibanez AD-9 which regularly sell for $140 and up. Okay, the Boss DM-3 IS better but only marginally.

this is a cool little lo-fi analog delay. the maximum repeat time is about 300ms, and despite the comment below stating that only those with the name on the left self-oscillate, all of them can be tweaked to infinte repeats, or beyond into self-oscillation by the trimpots inside. the repeats are a little dirtier, more compressed, and with a narrower frequency band than higher-quality analog delays, but that's exactly what i like about it. if you set feedback to minimum, mix to 100% wet, and delay time to minimum, it acts like a fixed bandpass filter, giving somewhat of a playing-through-a-telephone impersonation.

it's a DOD - very well built, sturdy steel encasing.

this is a great pedal for a more lo-fi analog sound. if you want pristine, clear repeats, then get a digital. the DOD 585 is also a great analog delay pedal, with clearer repeats but still unmistakably analog, and with really amazing self-oscillation capabilites, so if you're looking for analog but not necessarily lo-fi, i would recommend that you check that one out as well.

Sound quality is very clean and crisp. The delays are warm, lush and variegated. I just got 2 of these in MINT condition so I can do stereo delay & I must say, I am IMPRESSED. This is an awesome delay. Makes for my old Ibanez bying on me. I wont be looking for Ibanez any longer. This pedal sounds every bit as good!!!! They each sound slightly different from each other. One self-oscilates and the other doesnt for example, but they are both rich and organic sounding.

As I stated before, I have 2 of these. Each one is a built like a tank and is rock solid even though pretty old units. Dod really hangs in there. I have never had a Dod pedal die on me and I have owned many over the years. :)

I have contacted them a couple of times. I think its the same outfit that runs Digitech. They have always been helpful, but then agan I have never asked for much....only a little tech assist...so I will give them a 9.....since they still sell battery covers for the older FX!! That's cool!!

This pedal is really incredible for what it costs. It sounds almost as good as the best I have ever heard. Ive been playing for 35 years and have owned lots of gear. This is one of the best hidden secrets out there guys. You can get 'em cheap. I paid $79 but mine was mint with adapter/box/papers ......anyway, I have seen them for less, but Id rather pay a little more and get some miles out of it what to speak of the pride of owning a clean pedal. Compared to the DM-2, or Ibanez Maxon models out there, this is a screaming steal, and most folks really could not tell the difference. I would say it sounds about 90% as good as any of 'em if not EQUAL to or almost equal to in some cases sonically. Really, a lot of people are throwing big bucks at analog delays ($150-$600) and its not necessary unless you are either a perfectionist or snob. This Delay Kicks Butt!! It is available for half the price or less than the so-called biggies.
Try one out and you will see!!! These will be boutique vinatage analogue delays one day with fat price probably, so why not get one before that happens? Im hunting for another one right now.

Very warm and lush, 330 ms., not noisy at all. Amazing quality

but overall this is an amazing value for a pedal that sounds
this good.

Three knobs- pretty straightforward.
Sound Quality

I love the vibe I get from it; it is a little noisy and the connections aren't quite right all of the time, but when it's tightened and clean (I'm de-grunging it currently) it sounds nice and warm. It definitely can degrade the signal on lower output amps, though I haven't had a problem with anything above 50 watts. Also, it tends to sound cleaner when the pickups are lower output. I had a violin with a cheapo piezo stick-on jobbie running into it and it sounded amazing. With a good fresh battery it is as good as many more expensive delays, with the only caveat being the lack of a feedback knob for true sound-on-sound effects.
Reliability
:7
Hmmm. I have had it die on me, but not very recently. It was never really taken care of until I bought it, but I have found it to be mostly reliable. Being a techie I've been trying to make all of the connections as tight as I can. I don't own another delay right now, so if it died at a gig I'd just pull it out of the chain. Most of my other DOD pedals have never, ever let me down.

I am a very eclectic player with a huge analog obsession That being said, this pedal suits me perfectly. Generally I run a Tele into a Twin, with the guitar going into the delay and then into a Small Stone. I had grown tired of it for a while so I bought a Danelectro DC-1 (Dan-Echo)and was very disappointed. I came back to my DOD quickly as the DC-1 did the same things, but simply didn't have the vibe. This pedal is not perfect, but is a great value for an analog delay. Again, my only complaint is the lack of a proper feedback control (which the Dan-Echo didn't have either) but for the price, who cares. For 1/8th the price of a Memory Man I have a unit which does almost everything it does. If it were stolen, I'd definitely keep an eye out for one. One of the best musical tools I have owned in a long time. I still want a solid-state Maestro Echoplex, though.

This isn't rocket science. It's three knobs and a footswitch. The footswitch isn't the best, heck it IS a DOD afterall, and I'm not a fan of DOD knobs either, but now I'm just being picky.
Sound Quality
:8
Well, it's analog, which means it's warm, a bit fuzzy and isn't going to give you huge delay times. If you want to use a delay pedal as a rythem guitarist, this isn't for you. I originally got this box as a backup to my Ibanez AD9, and in the end I will allways pick the Ibanez first, the FX90 is a bit noisier, a bit less responsive, but that said I have grown to love this little guy too. I initially used this one most if I was running stereo (using my boss stage tuner as a stereo/mono source) through two effect paths and into two amps. Other effects included a Lamb's Head Big Muff, a Boss SD-1 overdrive, an EH Bass microsynth, auto wahs, phasers, eq's...you name it, in numerous configurations and then into an Orange Head/Cab and/or a Traynor Head/Cab. Most often I play a Fender Bass VI, but I'll also use this for any number of Guitars or Basses (I do find the bass to be a bit muddier, as the FX90 isn't the cleanest sound to begin with). I'd set this up on the oppisite channel to the AD9 and typically at a different delay setting (ie. if one was at a slap back sort of setting, the other'd be at a long, lasting delay...normally the FX90 went long) for some awesome sounds. Other than in these stereo set ups though, this one mostly sat on the shelf...until recently. I decided to step up this pedal a bit to make it really fun. I externalised the knobs to a little remote box that I either strap to my guitar or belt (I'd been wanting to try this for years and I wasn't about to sacrifice the AD9) and now I use this as much or more than any other pedal!! It responds really well to fiddling with the delay time knob, and rather than stop playing and lean over to do it now I can just go nuts. Some delays (especially the cheaper ones, in this price range anyway) aren't as nice as this one when it comes to this sort of knob-twiddling...but the sounds that come out of this little guy are pretty sweet.
Reliability
:9
I've had more DOD's konck out on me than say, Boss pedals....and the footswitch always makes me worry, but there's been no problems so far. I'd probably buy another (and mod it up too) if I lost this one...heck, I may just get another one anyway, this started as my back up but now it's sharing the spotlight. They're not exactly expensive if found used.

Never tried...but I assume now that I've mucked with it DOD wouldn't want much to do with me anyway.
Overall Rating
:9
In the end I'm very thankful I got this pedal. It's easily found really cheap used, and is the best delay sound in it's range. Sure it's not quite as nice as, say a memory man, the AD9, an MXR or an old Maxon (I'm only thinking stomp boxes here...I'm not a rackmount man) or any number of boxes two or three or ten times the price the FX90 goes for, but as a back up or starter pedal it is definitely an underrated, unnoticed gem. Guitarstore heads might look at you funny for wanting a DOD, but if they're smart they'll know this thing's value (actually better for you if they DON'T know...it'll be cheaper). I'd personally never have gotten enough nerve to cut up my other delays and experiment like I did with this one, and in doing so I've had so much more fun with this effect than just about any other I've owned! Again, before I mod-ed it up or for a steady, lead delay I still pick the AD9 or Memory man over this, it's not the crispest sound out there (neither are the AD9 or Memory man for that matter though.....obviously I'm talking analog here) but I would certainly recommend it if you see one for a good price.

The FX90 is a stompbox...Anybody can figure it out....Very easy to get a good sound out of it too. You've got yr standard Analog delay pedal setup with 3 knobs-delay rate, mix, and repeats. No patches, no menus, no parameters, no MIDI friggin' flow chart, no none of that stuff!!!!!! Just three knobs.

Let me begin this by saying I I am am a a a delay elay lay ay addict ddict dict ict ct t. And I love this pedal. I use this pedal with the following setup-
Les Paul or Tele into Dunlop 535Q wah into Vox valve-tone into Boss CE-2 chorus into Moogerfooger phaser into DOD FX90 into Fender amp into reality baby!!!!
Technically this pedal kind of sucks, it's one of those pedals that has its own unique little character which makes it cool. I mean come on folks, we're talking about DOD here. Lets face it, about 99% of their products(including their sister companies Digitech and dbx)are shite, except for this pedal, the FX25 Envelope filter and a few from their first line in the late '70's. It's no surprise I've heard numerous other musicians, even Guitar Center employees talk and they always bag on DOD. This pedal's from the early eighties..It's a little noisy, I kind of expect it to be. It has its own characteristic tone compared to other analog delays, its echoes are a bit muffled compared to Boss DM-2's, Ibanez AD-99's, EH Memory-Men. But thats what I like about it. You can get all the standard analog delay effects with this one, the rockabilly slap thing, the Edge from U2 thing, the faux-Echoplex-kind of Tubby-Jammy-dub thing... But what really draws me to this pedal is when I hit a chord(clean), let it sustain, crank that delay time knob from all the way clockwise to all the way counter-clockwise real sharply and then back quickly to say 3 o'clock, I get a sound that I don't hear out of other delay pedals, very unique, very juicy. (If you think I'm a weirdo yet, stop reading and go buy another rack unit, if you're still with me, read on brothers..) If you do this with say a Boss DM-2 or 3, the sound is very distorted and you don't hear the pitch of the note you are bending as well as on this pedal(But this is cool too, just a different sound). I've shaped little feedback-melodies just hitting a note on the guitar and bending it around with the delay rate knob. A thing to watch for on these pedals is self-oscillation thing. If its the older edition(With the model name on the left) it won't self-oscillate, at least mine don't. If its the newer one,(with the model name on the right) it will self-oscillate when you turn the repeat rate up all the way. This is a cool feature for all the trippers. This pedal seems to work great with other pedals and amps of mine. You can get all kinds of different sounds with it, from big wide Syd Barrett-style chaotic soundscapes to tape-reversed fart noises to....even that sound that Lee Majors the Bionic Man made when he would move really slowly.....

These old DOD pedals are fairly well put together, not like a Boss or anything but lets face it, Just stomp on it, whatever, if you break it, geese go buy a another one, they're cheap...I even saw one go for 50 bucks...on EBAY for christsake....that means you can probably find one at a pawn shop for 30-40 bucks

I play all kinds of different stuff. I have quite a few different delay units I use off and on. This one gets used quite frequently. I also have a Boss DM-2, EH Memory Man, a solid-state Echoplex, Jamman, and a Moogerfooger analog delay(actually I just sent it back to them, too sketchy and expensive). This DOD can hang with those bad boys of echo just mentioned pretty well. I must say, when I first got it, this pedal sat in my closet for 3 months. A friend of mine gave it to me as a throw-in with his Juno-60 I bought off him. I was like, DOD, oh, crap. But when I got my two DM-2's ripped off(damn that pissed me off) I was forced to use this ugly duckling. But after a while, I really started to dig it a lot, even though it is like the ugliest blue color you'll ever see. What if DOD ever decided to reissue this? I really doubt it, they're to busy putting out crap. the punkifier, the metaler, the grunge pedal, duh. DOD sucks.

Exetremely easy to use (Delay, Mix, and Repeat). I don't have the manual but it's unecessary. The DOD switches really suck though, it's just a lil plastic pannel thing the size of like a matchbox and it clicks on/off.

This delay has some cool and plain funky tones. Usually I have it so that it gives some reverb/echo (to give some life to my horrible amps). Here's my setup: Yamaha EG112 Strat (all i can say is DONT buy this guitar) -> Boss Compression Sustainer -> DOD Preamp Overdrive/250 -> DOD Sustain -> Morley PWA Pro Wah -> DOD Delay -> DOD Chorus -> Yamaha Combo 8" 10 watt (really really bad) -> Microsoft Digital 80 Speakers (computer speakers). Once i was able to simulate human speech (sort of like an EH bassballs) with the chorus and this delay. Unfortunately i forgot the setting but i was moving the delay around to get that effect. It's not real noisy but it muffles a big distorted tone. Usually I use this pedal when playing blues stuff (SRV) and it does a pretty good job of it. I don't know too much about delay pedals but from what I've tried so far this is pretty good.

Well I cant really say for two reasons: 1, it's been shutting on and off lately for some weird reason but i'm quite certain the power supply is at fault (whenever i jam on my wah it shakes the power supply and momentarily cuts all the power off, the power supply is a dod, any ideas, please mail me, i'd greatly appreciate it), reason 2 i only use it at home and a few times a month i bring it to my friend's for a jam. minus the power problem its been fine for my use
