possibly the most simple pedal i've ever seen. plus i play barefoot onstage, so i can flip the octave with my toe for the solos. sweet...

my housemate nearly moved out when i got this - he accused me of selling my soul to the gods of metal, which he hates. he has a point - it's a BEAST of a noise - and yes, it does feedback a bit, but hell, it's a rock'n'roll pedal - and as you'll see below, i LIKE feedback. the reason i got this pedal was i wanted to kinda sound like Jackie White, but didn't really want to spend 160 pounds on a whammy pedal. this does what i wanted it to perfectly.

i've gigged with it, and had no problems whatsoever - i guess 'cos i play with my shoes off, i'm not that scared of breaking the plastic
and i only weigh about 135 pounds so i reckon it's safe - as for using it without backup, i play this in line with a zoom gfx707 and a Boss super distortion/feedbacker pedal, so i'm pretty well covered in the crunchy noisy area.

my band plays mainly hard rock versions of '60s girl-group songs (the crystals, ronnettes, etc) with a slight helping of the stooges to round everything off, and this pedal is great for both. our line-up is me on vocals and guitar, my best girl Suzy Q on vocals and Bass, and whichever drummer isn't busy, so the octaver function really makes the sound beefier when i start soloing. if it were stolen ,i'd easily get another one. i just have a thing about danelectro pedals. my first ever pedal was the Daddy-O, and that worked fine as i was in a punk band with another guitarist then, but as i'm out ther on my own now i needed a pedal that would make me sound big, and this is exactly what i needed.

I like the tone this pedal creates. It's powerful, evil, and can make you sound like a metal thrash master with ease. The octave switch makes it less organic sounding but is a delight to hear. If it didn't have an annoying scratch and hum sound, I would have given this 3 extra points.

If you love to solo, especially at fast, finger bleed speeds then this is a great pedal. Hendrix is my favourite artist to replicate with the Black Licorice. If you're a metal maniac, or a serious gigger, buy something else. Although the scratch and hum sound isn't always an annoyance, it can get bad enough to make you sound like an bad amateur, and sometimes it can cut out some of the high notes, especially when using the octave switch. Try before you buy.

Fender Mex Tele --> Danelectro Delay --> Dunlop Cry Baby --> This --> Marshall AVT100
As people have said, the hum when it's on but no signal's going through it. Possibly an earthing problem, possibly not.
Another annoying thing is the fact that the distortion cannot be regulated, only the volume and bass on it. I guess you pay for the ease of use...
One good thing is that, if used correctly with the gain on your amp, it can produce a kind of metal scream through a solidstate amp similar to the Ibanez Tube Screamer through a valve amp.

It's plastic not metal. I had a knob break on my Danelectro deal so I guess it's only a matter of time before the same happens to this one but it's surprisingly rugged for a plastic pedal. I wouldn't gig this simply due to the hum which would probably burst peoples' ear drums.

If it were stolen id hunt down the bastard and kick the shit out of him. And if it broke id buy another one. i love how easy it is to use. i hate the octave thats the only thing that sucks. i wish it was more like the digitech metal master which is a great pedal. For makin ur own music it helps me soo much on the rythyms and thats why im buying a digitech 200 or 300 to figure out leads. Overall this is a great pedal get it even if u have a distortion already.

This peddle is very, very noisy, might be the pickups but when I use this with gain up to much it feedbacks. It's got to much of a distorion that's got one sound no matter what setting.

Been playing for over 1 year, This can't get stolen because I took it back to guitar center, but if it did, I'd find the person who stole it and kick their ass because that's $50 less for me. I tried this with the Boss Metal Zone, bought this because it was cheaper and wanted to try out a heavy distortion, big mistake. I also sold Danelectro Pastrami Overdrive to a friend because Guitar wouldn't refund it because I lost the packaging.

I used this a while in a band because I didnt have a good guitar amp to rehearse with. I still use it now that I do because I love the sound. But mainly I played it directly into a P/A with a Cort M-500 humbucker equipped guitar (great guitar guys take a look at the m-series). I hear a lot of reviews that don't give sound quality what it deserves. "It's got too much feedback" Jeezes! Control it! Because you can control the feedback... and even so, what do you expect from this budget effect? It's no boss...but you can use it. It's got a real good metal tone when playing and it really shines at those 5th chords, palm mutes, tapping... you got that point from previous reviews I guess.
The octaver is cool but not that great because it breaks up on chords that ring a bit. Still cool voor a heavy-metal version of the James bond theme...
Still, review an apple as an apple and you'll find this little box to sound pretty good :)

If you're on batteries, don't leave a cable into the input-jack cuz that will drain your batteries. No question about getting it again, sure thing. It's very good for messing around and warming up backstage before a gig, or just for some fun at home... it's got a cool sound

Used with Guild Starfire II Thinline, Black Licorice, Peavy Triumph 120 Watt Tube head. HOT DAMN this this is loud, adds some noise but not too much, considering the Gain and Distortion it adds. I don't use it all the time, because my amp has a good tube sound and crunch, but for when I that "My guitar turned into a chainsaw and my amp is on fire" kind of sound for certain solos or songs, it does the trick! THRASH all the way.
Also, the Octive Down swith is pretty neat. It makes the sound a little bit more obviously digital, but for when you I am thrashing out this hard, I think it adds to it.

Ok, I think the operation of any effects pedal is pretty much laid out by common sense. You turn the knobs to get different kinds of sounds out of it, and there's usually a large foot-operated apparatus that switches the desired effect on or off. However, the GENIUSES at Danelectro decided to be really cool and put a little button on their pedal that you have to deliberately press down on. I am frequently frustrated by this mechanism as I have a nasty habit of messing up in my strumming because I have to switch on the distortion.

People, this pedal flat-out sucks. First complaint: Lack of a level knob. This pedal has nothing of the sort, only a volume knob. Seond complaint: Said volume knob is ultra-sensitive and FEEDS LIKE NO OTHER if I turn it more than 1/4 of its capability. I'm afraid to turn that thing up to any decent level just so that I can keep my hearing. To get a lighter distortion I have to improvise and roll the volume knob on my guitar back to 1 or 2, in which case any other member of the band easily drowns me out. Third complaint: The octave switch that danelectro puts on there hardly works. There must be a loose connection or something because the effect of this switch is not at all consistent, it goes in and out, bringing pain to my ears. Fourth complaint: Idle noises. When I turn this thing on, it has the most obvious hum on earth and picks up anything and everything that touches the strings. To make matters worse, there's this static buzz, on top of that incessant hummung, that starts the instant that I stop playing. I can finish practicing, put my guitar back onto its stand, and if I leave everything on this buzz will continue for upwards of 10 MINUTES, I kid you not. I won't give this thing a 1 in this category because I'll admit that the distortion is decent but not impressive.

HECK NO I could never rely on this thing. It's made of the cheapest kind of plastic, I feel like I'm gonna break that thing every time I stomp on it. If I even took this to a gig, it would be the backup. Stomping on it hard would also probably cause that volume knob to turn half a millimeter, causing loss of hearing for anybody in the audience.Anyone with common sense would never use this pedal before anything else.

Heh I don't even want to go through Danelectro, they'd just offer me one of their crappy products. If I ever talked to them, it would be hostile because I spent a hard-earned $40 on this thing. Once I learned a bit more about effects pedals I bought a Boss DS-2 and I freakin' love that thing. People, you can probably get a Boss pedal off ebay for around $5 or $10, and it's worth it.

I've only been playing guitar for 1 1/2 years but I'm really obsessed. I've been known to sit in my room for 12+hours just noodling away on my guitar. I play an Ibanez GSA20 w/Seymour Duncan JBs through a Crate GFX212T amp with a Boss DS-2 pedal. I play lots of different kinds of rock and roll, from Bob Dylan all the way to a little bit of Godsmack and some of the heavier stuff. If this thing were ever lost or stolen I'd laugh real hard because the guy who stol it would be getting ripped, not me. If I had to replace it with something I would go and get a DigiTech Rp500, which has been referred to as the 'weapon of the gods'. My least favorite feature on this pedal, besides the whole pedal itself, is the lack of a level knob. If it had one, I could actually do stuff with the distortion, not just screw aroud with this ultra-high gain that just sounds muddy as heck. People, this pedal is just a hunk of junk.

Interesting box. Turn the level right down and it sounds like you've blown a speaker. But stomp on it and play with your guitar volume and you can get some neat-o effects. Very easy, but requires some fiddling esp. with bass control which is more like a bass volume.

Tele and Strat through a homemade Deluxe. It is noisy when on - keep a hand clamped to your strings when not playing or it feeds like any hi-gain box. Great octave down for soloing - gives that 'phat' (as in good) metal sound. With octave off it actually sounds like a smooth hi-gain fuzz. Unique tone - no-one will mistake it for a Metalzone or Ibanez. I like it for modern alternative. The good thing is, it's got so much gain you can adjust to a usuable volume.

Play trad in one band and modern alt. in another. I mainly aim to use this for singing leads although I use it for fuzz rythym in a couple of numbers. I like it a lot. I'm sold on these mini-pedals, especially for infrequent use. I have a Dano pedal case - half the size and weight of my old Boss BCB6, which got in the way on the ground bigtime. With four effects there is no significant degredation of the sound. I find them all quite quiet when off.

Quite noisy because of all the massive gain. As far as over the top metal tone its here and its a mean tone. When using chords with this monster the sound becomes very muddy. it's a one-trick pony, but it does the best.
no way to adjust the distortion...it is always full on (and, DAMN, what a distortion).
it is "beyond metal", as it is named.
it's quite usable on its own, but it is also fun to stick it right after another distortion, giving you the option of "my amp caught on fire" sounds.
as mentioned below "this pedal IS low end", (so don't worry about treble or solos).
works well for guitar...use it on bass and your eyes will melt.

I'd be worried about breaking it, (though they seem to have upgraded to a tougher switching mechanism this year, a cool squishy thing).
the small size and smooth plastic casing come in handy (when your going to hide it up your anus and smuggle it into the studio).
if, like me, you use it sparingly (and as a really good trick) and take care of it, you'll be fine

This has got to be one of the easiest pedals to be ever made and it's by Danelectro. First off, the instruction manual tells you how to do the settings, but let's face it: the Black Licorice is simple. There are only two knobs which consist of the Level and Bass knobs. Then in the middle is the cool and awesome Octave switch which can be seet from On to Off. In the end it's only three things and oh, yeah, of course the pedal knob. Simple-tastic.

The sound of the Black Licorice s very deadly! That is why it is named the Beyond Metal pedal. So for all the musicians out there who only use Boss and dislike Danelecro should check the power of this monster. I use my pedal with my beloved Epiphone SG Bully, which I plan to use in the future as my trademark guitar in my band along with the company Gibson. This pedal is not for the faint of heart, blues,Green Day punk rockers...this is more of like Gothica(my band, lol), Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, and Kittie, heavy ass sounding stuff that will drive you insane! Th settings Inormally use are: Level=10 o clock and bass=3 o clock.I use a small but loud Crate amp for this at the moment. A cool trick to do with the Octave switch is to pull the low E string and then pull the Octave switch from off to on and you will get an awesome and heavy sound effect. The distortion is probably unrivaled and great. I am not sure if it can work that good in chorus and there seems to be no treble switch. Throughout, this pedal sounds like it kicks heavy ass!

The casing Danlectro put this heavy pedal in is cute and a bit of a joke: it is made of a hard and durable plastic. I sometimes get a bit nervous wondering what will happen if it happens to ever get a mighty stomp or a humpty-dumpty fall. I have dropped it a couple times ad it still works. I would use this pedal live of course, but if I had a back up, I would bring it. Throughout it is an all right, small pedal. Just don't be a retard and try to destroy it thinking you are Marilyn Manson or something cause who knows if it will crack. Do what I do...take care of your stuff.

Danlectro sure is nice. They gave me two free 9-volt batteries with my purchase of the pedal at the Guitar center with it's purchase. They also let me check out the pedal first. So, in the end they really do care of their customers.

I love this pedal plain and simple. I play heavy, depressing, gothic type stuff and this pedal is definetly a great start to something heavy. I have had this pedal for five months and it has not failed me since. I love the way the pedal works and how it is easy to use. I also like the the casing colors which are black and red and siver. The only drawback to me is the size o the pedal. It fits right in the palm of your hand. I also wish there had been a treble switch. Aside all, I get to do some hard kicking tones to what I want, and I make the music I like. Of course, you can also use other pedals to get a different sound or just mix them. The pedal works best with the low end stings best while the louder thin strings sound a littl messy at times. Basically work on the settings. So if you are into metal, this is the pedal to use as a beginner or professional. Remember the Ocave swtch feature. I just love it!

I am using this pedal with a dinky little Univox amp, and my Epiphone SG, and it sounds exactly as I hoped it would. I play mostly Metallica's music and this pedal can get a sound that is maybe not exactly the Met sound but it can play their music awesome in its own way. When you flick the octave switch the sound is cool, but I don't really use this feature very often, but for writing new riffs I like the octave switch it's a fresh sound that I like for my own stuff.

It is perfect for Metallica, Guns N' Roses, and all the 80s metal bands and any heavy modern rock band. It is perfect for Iron Man and Crazy Train. This is not good for blues or that pop crap. It is altight for punk and some grunge but for punk and grunge i recomend the T-bone(i have it, it is awesome)or if you want to get a little better of a pedal than the T-bone the FabTone would be good. Set the bass at 3 0 clock. The octave switch is really sweet also. It has an awesome tone and great sound.

I think i can depend on this pedal. If I did a gig I might have the FabTone for backup.

I play all rock. This pedal was made for metal though. I would guess people could figure this out by looking at the name. I think it lives up to its name. If it were lost or stolen i would get another one without a doubt. I love everything about it. My favorite feature is the octave switch.

Sound is very nice. I'm not sure if it's just my pedal, but when I don't use the lower octave i get this loud ass buzz (makes my Fender Champion amp look good). I would probably enjoy the pedal more if the octave switch worked properly but it's still good.

The only real difference I saw between this and my Metal Zone was the neat sound you get with the lower octave option. But, I also picked up the Danelectro 7 band EQ to help control the sound and it makes the Black Licorice scream. If it was stolen, I'd have to get a job and buy a new one. It's a handy accessory for any metal player's rig.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and a Squier Double Fat Strat running into a Crate Gx 65. I also have a crybaby wah wah for that Jimi Hendrix stuff. My favorite bands however, are all of the Nu Metal really heavy stuff. I am into Godsmack,Disturbed,Drowning Pool and etc. and this pedal is it for me. The tone I'm looking for is that of a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier but hey its not like I am rich or anything. This setup is perfect for my garage cover band. If you like Heavy music this is a great great pedal.

The plastic kinda scares me but I put it in that Danelectro carrying bag thing with the power supply and that keeps it protected.

One major problem I have with this thing is that there's no control for treble. What kind of distortion doesn't have a control for treble? The distortion itself is fine, but it could use a little more high end, because even with my amp's High at maximum it still wasn't enough. By the way, I play a Strat through a Marshall. The octave sound is the real reason to purchase this pedal. Get this if you want good octave-distortion.

Appears to function properly, though...
It seems to buzz or create static whenever I play something while switched to the clean channel. My other Dano pedals don't make this noise. I guess it must have a defect or something. Has anyone else encountered this problem or is it just my pedal? E-mail and let me know if you can.

I bought this pedal hoping to get a good retro sound. It sounds good when the octave is on. However, the distortion by itself isn't anything to write home about- plus it needs more treble. And unfortunately my pedal makes some sort of damn static sound, so I'll give it a 7 instead of an 8.

Two knobs and a switch? if the label reads "beyond metal", chances are they know not to make it too complex. The knobs are just an output level and a bass boost; there's no tweakable EQ, really (you live with the mids as they are, kids, and highs? This pedal was not made for highs?) and no gain control. It really is just stomp-and-go.

Well, it ain't an MXR Blue Box, but it ain't bad, either. Really? we've been kicking around looking for an evil, ugly Blue Box for a while, and saw the new Dano octave down distortion-- well, if their French Toast is a faithful clone of a Foxx Tone Machine octave up, maybe the Black Licorice is a faithful Blue Box.
Wrong. It's a completely different kind of flying, altogether.
First, this pedal has that Metalzonish tone thang-- I can't really describe it, but, I've never liked it. Sort of a squelchy, superharmonic cheesieness that always turned me off.. That sort of thing sounds thick when you're doing the palm-mute chunking around, but? well, we're just not a metalzone band (if you dig the BossMetal sound, this pedal will not make you happy-- it's too limited). Better and better-- now we've stomped out the urge to get that little box.
Our bassist is in love-- twist that bass knob and thump around on the low end, and this is the finest bass distortion you can find... for one specific type of distorted bass: for the pick-driven, palm muted, low E-string drive, this pedal reigns supreme. Without palm muting, there are no notes, just a big mass of harmonic clutter. It doesn't kill the low end? hell? this pedal *is* low end.
Flip the octave switch and the world goes sideways? I love analog pitch shifters, and this thing is a lot of fun. Throwing around powerchords on a guitar, this thing sloppily grinds away-- like most shifters, it likes single notes, and chords get messy (the more complex the chord, the messier the octave doubling). I like this for noise-- incoherent left hand muting and natural harmonics, preferably with lots of echo. The lower octave adds a little thickness to high end leadlines, too, taking some of that irritating metalzonishness off the top (again, this is just personal taste-- I'm just not a metalzone guy).
As far as being "beyond metal," I suppose? I'm not a Classic Tone Emulator (no one in the band is)? but it's great for chunking away, and can get really ugly. Um? I'm not sure this pedal would be useful to many coverbands.
It is the noisiest distortion pedal in our arsenal. Even with hard gated silence before it, this thing hisses away? it's the only pedal we run a noise gate before *and* after. That makes it sort of impractical in live situations, but in the studio? what this thing can do to a snare drum should be illegal?

Yes it is plastic, but we have the Dano French Toast octave up, Hash Browns flanger, and Pastrami? er? "Overdrive" (let's face it, it's a solid state distortion box), and they're all living pretty healthy, normal lives, so I'm not worried about this one. If they go, it's a great excuse to break out a soldering iron, build a better box, and add more controls?
But so far, none of them have broken.

Limited, but useful and fun, and really worthwhile. I was lucky enough to pick one up at a local music shop at even under Musician's Friend prices (great store... the kind that has a real Univibe in the case for about $900, and-- so they say-- an even better one in the back), and everyone loves using it. Severe amounts of bang for the buck.
Hell, it makes me want to pick up a guitar full time and start a side noiserock project? which is as ringing an endorsement as I can give, since we tend to be a very anti-guitar band. This thing has been keeping me away from the stomping machine noises and more on a stringed instrument, and that is something very, very remarkable. If it was lost or stolen, I'd probably get another one.

This is the holy grail of heavy distortion pedals. Turn on the octave and the bass all the way up and you can chunk with riffs that are heavier than you could even imagine. turn the bass down some and play with your amp settings and you can get some good aerosmith or guns n roses solo distortion tones. so versatile, so heavy at the same time. the only thing you cant use this for is weak distortion for pop or pop punk or something but its called the heavy metal pedal for a reason. if its related to metal at all this pedal covers it.
