the best backwards delay that i've ever used, at least in a guitar pedal package--better than the hazarai memory man--better than a boss--this delay is dark, kinda of like my dod fx-90 I SAID KINDA!!
very quiet, but being a digital device--analog fans may find that this processes their sound too much--works best to run your instrument or mic into this first before the analog stuff (i run this before my mid-fi electronics pitch pirate with very interesting results)
if you're like me and combine digital with analog, then no worries

This is pretty easy to use. I worked with mine for about five minutes and got what I felt was a great "backwards tape" sound, which is exactly what I wanted.

It is not noisy, thank goodness. As I said, I wanted a backwards guitar sound, and this does it quite well. Back in the sities, I loved hearing The Beatles, The Byrds, and other bands experimentiing with backwards tape effects. The Back Talk allows me to approximate that sound well.

I think all the larger Dano effects are very reliable and built like tanks. I want to buy another Back Talk as a spare, but they're becoming harder and harder to find. I'm sure I'll find one soon.
Anyone got one for sale?

No opinion, but I have a guitarist friend who had a problem with a Dano echo pedal, and they sent him another one, no questions asked.

If this was stolen, I would go out of my way to get another. It's part of my sound. My band plays The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," and with this pedal, I can nail the droning sound of the original recording. I know there are other pedals that do the backwards echo thing. I tried the Memory Man with Hazarai, and I thought the bakwards effect was terrible compared to the Back Talk. All in all, I really like the Back Talk pedal. It's earned a permanent piece of real estate on my pedalboard.

I am speaking as a guitar guy who has since come full-circle after surviving a high school guitar pedal fetish. These days I am happy with just a tube screamer and a tuner between me and the amp. I owned this pedal for about four years. It's great for fooling around at home, but the hard "swish!" sounds that happen when you loop a bunch of agressing playing kinda sucks. However, done delicately, it is nice and trippy. Nonetheless, I cannot imagine actually using this thing live. It's just awfully choppy, requires a lot of finesse. Fun, but probably better suited for goofing around at home or adding a weird nuance here or there to a home recording.

As I mentioned earlier, I currently don't get much of a thrill out of exotic guitar effects. That said, if your band likes to walk a line of weird/noise/annoying, this may just be your cup of magic mushroom tea. I think it would be better if it had a little bit longer "sample" capacity or had some way of cutting the aforementioned "SWISH/SLAP!" sound that happens o each repeat if you get too crazy with it. I used to have fun playing it at home, but often found it was a distraction that stood in the way of actually writing songs. To my ears, it's for rare garnish only. But hey, if weird non-hands-on noize makes you happy, you would definitely be getting a dependable, durable and unique addition to your rig by bying the backtalk.

Ok, yea some of the settings on it seem pointless, but if you can get timing down some of the extreme settings (all of them cranked) can be pretty trippy sounding, and if you put the repeats low and everything else at 12 o' clock, you can get some very VERY full sounding slow leads if you're the only guitarist in a band like me. Also found if you add in a whammy pedal set on octave up and octave down , and add distortion, you can make your guitar sound like a radio changing frequencies, awsome if you ask me, very cool. Also extremely quiet.

At first I was going to get this pedal for the reverse delay effects, like all these other folks trying to get jimi hendrix and all that crap, but when i got it i thought reverse delay was really cheesy and you cant not use it live if you do it will just ruin the music, but then i fiddled with the knobs and i found out it has infinte feed back loops, which means you can create simpley a loop, but not just any loop a really creamy well meshed together notes mashed together loop if you use your swells right.
Sound Quality
:

Sounds amazing, if you leave the infite loop on the repeats it can gather alot of noise, but if you take it back abit so it doesnt intensely gather up you can keep feeding it swells to keep the ambience going through it. I use 2 other danechos after in the chain with this through a fender twin reverb with reverb up to 10 and it sounds sooo blissful, with a squier super sonic.

this pedal is very easy to use. like all danelectro pedals, everything is pretty self explanitory. the manual doesnt come with any 'pre-set' settings, but thats a-okay in my book. my rule of thumb is 'find your own tone'.

i run a various amount of guitars (lately an epiphone les paul custom) through a pedal board consisting of Boss and Dano pedals and through a '76 Yamaha amp. A pedal i love to run the DR-1 with is my Boss DD-5. now, you might say 'that pedal already HAS reverse settings on it!' well, its not as good as danelectros. besides, i cant remember what settings i have to have everything on when i switch from delay to reverse and back during a gig. so I just made life a little easier and got the DR-1. what sounds REALLY kick ass is using an E-Bow, the DR-1 and the DD-5 on a tap tempo setting. and you can create some very amazing sounds and tones. I also plugged it into my Rhoades and tinkered with it. It sounds dramatically better than the DD-5 reverse settings.

this pedal, like the big Dano pedals are a billion times more reliable than Boss pedals. lets say youre playing a gig, and your pedal wont turn off after youve stepped on it because a cable is caught under it. you wont ever have that problem with dano's. not to mention if you were to throw this pedal at someone, it could probably hospitalize em. this thing is built like a rock. (except for maybe the knobs, but you gotta take care of your stuff, ya know?)

If this pedal could have anything extra, it would be a tempo input jack for a sustain pedal to plug into like the DD-5.

hmmm. there are lots of downright un-useable settings on this thing, at least for the types of sounds i wanna hear. it took quite a bit of knob twiddling for me to find some cool sounds. and when i did find these settings, they were not at positions where the knobs were maxed, minimum, or at the midway position. in other words, ya can't just try the "no duh" settings--yer gonna hafta get on yer hands & knees & dig, dig, dig to achieve the tones you had in mind when you bought this pedal.

gibson s-1 w/lindy fralin p-90s > fuzzbox[i own quite a few] > dan armstrong orange crusher > danelectro backtalk > custom-built 3-watt tube amp. george l's cables connecting the whole set-up. first off, let me say that the sound quality of the backtalk is very clean. really no surprise there, as the delay tones produced by danelectro's dan-echo have sounded pristine to my ears when i have heard other guitarists using them. secondly, i must add that i am having no problem using fuzz/od/dist pedals w/the backtalk. another reviewer opined that it seemed the backtalk was only working for them in conjunction w/clean sounds. possibly the use of compression after the fuzz is the reason i'm having success? who knows. thirdly (is that a word?), another reviewer said that no speed setting less than 2 o'clock was of any use to him. while i see his point (that is, most of the interesting sounds DO lie in the 2 0'clock to 5 0'clock travel of the speed knob), i feel there are some cool sounds to be coaxed out of the backtalk with the speed at 12 o'clock, depending on song tempo and picking attack, while playing chords or sliding diads. lastly, it took me awhile, but i found the setting to get the sound i was looking for when i bought this pedal--that being the backward solo a'la hendrix sound. mix[3:30] speed[3:30] repeats[8:00]. give it a try.

i've owned four of danelectro's mini-pedals for several years now w/no problems. those pedals are small, inexpensive & have flimsy switches & knobs. nevertheless, they still are in fine working order. why? i take good care of my stuff. no mud-caked boondockers, no spilled beer-bongs, no crazy pedal-throwing friends allowed in my studio. compared to the dano minis, the backtalk is like a frickin' black box--if a plane crashes into my studio, the backtalk will be sitting there beside the destroyed fuselage, unaffected. so yeah, i think i can rely on it.

obviously, this is not an effect you can leave on all the time. therefore, it has to be rated accordingly. i mean, i'm not going to downgrade the backtalk just cuz i'm only going to use it sparingly. that would be like saying ANIMAL HOUSE sucks cuz john belushi isn't in enough scenes. his character was too crazy to be in more of the movie--it would have ruined it. yet, ANIMAL HOUSE is a great movie. my point? i think the judging the backtalk is very similar. you probably won't see it for long stretches of time, but when it does make an appearance... watch out.

3 knobs. One slip of paper in the box. That's about it. I can imagine things might be hard for some modern musicians, however. Cranking all the knobs all the way up doesn't necessarily produce a nice effect. So one point off.
Sound Quality
:
7
I use this effect with a mix of 9 other vintage and modern Boss, EHX, Danelectro, and Dunlop pedals. It'd be superfluous to name them all. The sound quality of this effect is superlative; clear, undistorted, a surprising lack of the cheese factor I was expecting. No cheap tricks here friends, it literally reverses the original signal. However, as another reviewer mentioned, the fact that setting the speed under about 2 o'clock will produce a bunch of gurgling and sonic stumbling was right on the money. How I wish Danelectro had widened the range of this knob. This is definately a try-it-first effect...before the little nuances this pedal is capable of started popping up I was definately struck with a case of "why the hell did I buy this thing?" syndrome. Given that, I will repeat that trying it out first will either make your eyes grow wide with excitement or your lip curl in disgust. Although it is the least hit-and-miss of Danelectro's ill-conceived "hippy" effects line (the Psycho-Flange and Sitar Swami are both terrible), it still isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Love the sound, hate the means of controlling it.
Reliability
:
9
The only thing that has worried me about the "big" (metal-encased) Danelectro pedals is the knobs. I dont turn my pedals on by hitting them with a hammer, so reliability is rarely an issue to me. Cheapness, durablity, and decent tone is basically the Danelectro manifesto.

This is my second Danelectro pedal, and like the first one I never looked at the manual (which, seeing as I bought it in Japan, I can't read anyway!)
Sound Quality
:

The second is VERY good, certainly as good as any delay. I'm giving it an 9, though, because the sound does tend to clip and stumble over itself when you play backwards at normal speed- HOWEVER, I recognise that this is unavoidable and that even the most expensive real-time pedal would have this problem, as you're always going to have a conflict between the phrase being played forward and the delay.
The trick I find to getting the best sound is try and listen to the noise your strings are making acoustically as well as the speaker sound. If you listen to just one or the other, it's very difficult (but a LOT of fun!).

I've been wanting a reverse pedal ever since I heard Jimi - my since-ditched multi effects had one which never worked, but with this unit I've found exactly what I wanted. For the price, there's nothing to complain about - if it cost another 5,000 Yen I'd expect a more precise way of controlling the effect and some use for the higher speed settings other than random bleeps (which I do actually like).
I play mostly Sonic Youth/Pavement indie rock or whatever it's called, but I like to play 60s psychedelic music also. The settings on this pedal can be tweaked to give you a mild wacky reverb, and it also gives you a very pleasing drone sound on open strings which I use in my ongoing project to replicate the sound of my sitar on guitar. It's not nearly as gimicky as I expected, in fact I find it more useful than my pitchshift\harmonist. I copes perfectly well with distortion, and I didn't find I had to be too careful about unwanted noise, no more so than when using a reverb. If wouldn't exactly recommend this be your first pedal, but if like me you've already got everything else under $150, I really recommend this puppy.

This pedal sounds pretty good ... the backwards sounds are very clear (clearer than I was expecting) and there was no extra noise or tone change when the pedal was turned on / off.

I play this using a Synsonics steinberger-type copy guitar through my home stereo. The sound of the pedal is really great, you can do a whole lot with it. For instance, you can turn the repeats knob all the way to the left for a Beatles-type backwards solo, or you can turn it to the left for a looping sound that sounds like Fripp's late seventies albums, although backwards. If you turn the speed knob all the way down it makes this weird chirping noise that might be annoying to some people though.

I've used this pedal for about a year and a half now with no major complaints. I've only used it for recording, so I don't know how it would do on the road. The battery wears out really fast, though, even if you dump the supplied battery and switch to a Duracell or Energizer, and it can sometimes be annoying to start playing only to realize that the battery went out overnight.

I use this pedal to record really weird psychedelic style jams. It really is a fascinating effect to work with - you can start a loop and let it go on and on, and you can add notes to the loop and get a multilayered sound. The sound can be really addictive. One time I brought it over to a friend's house and he liked the pedal so much that he jammed with it for about forty minutes nonstop. I was playing the drums at the time, but after a while I got bored with his interminable soloing. I wish this pedal had a backward/forward type switch, so you could play forward and reerse with only one pedal. As it is, I now need to go out and buy a Danecho pedal to do forward looping.

Awesome sounds. If you play through a good amp with good tone, this works great. No real problems with buzz or clicks on this part. It kind of is an explorational pedal, you continue to learn more over time about the possibilities. This rocks and rolls. And the sounds of my favourite artists is easily achieved. George Harrison and The Beatles reverse tape sounds such as "Tomorrow Never Knows," "Rain," "I'm Only Sleeping," and others. Sonny Landreth with John Hiatt, such as his lead on "Everybody went low". The list just goes on. True, if it is a polished lead you're figuring out, it takes some time to work it properly, but soundwise, it is great. I am very impressed.

This is one hell of a fun pedal to mess with. I run it through my sound card's mic input, because I won't have an amp until the end of the week. The sounds I got out of it in the first ten minutes of use blew me away. With the mix turned extremely low (IE between 7 and 8 o'clock), you can even use it as a regular delay pedal. I'll post some of the settings I use once I get my amp. The manual is a joke, it basically tells you how to put in the battery, but you really have to just tiwddle with it until you find your own settings. I haven't found an unuseable setting on it yet, except when it's MAXED out on all settings, it just makes a throbbing noise, that may not fly with some people.

The Pedal is amazing. Even through my crap-tastic sound card setup. I have an Ibanez RG450DX, with the stock INF pickups. The humbuckers distort a little, and distortion really throws the subtle nuances of the pedal's sound out of whack, but roll the guitar's volume back and engage a single coil (I only have one in the middle position) and that's where the pedal shines. I don't recommend using it on any settings but clean, but those of you who like to expiriment might come up with a good sound.
I only have enough cables to run one effect at a time. If you get two of these and set them out of phase to each other, you will create a very awesome effect. I record into my MS sound recorder, and reverse my recording and the sound that makes will blow your mind.
I bought it with "Are you Expirienced," and "Across the Universe" in my mind, and the pedal *can* make those sounds, but there is so much more it can do, you really can't limit yourself to Jimi, or one artist you want to be like. This is one pedal that you should try to do your own thing with.

Try playing single note runs, arpeggios, slides, etc. I've been playing since I was a Sophomore in high school, now a Sophomore in college. I have a Psycho Flange, too, not quite as impressive as the Back Talk, but it was real cheap. If the *battery* died, I'd buy a new one, just to try it with two. It makes any solo rock. I do wish it were a little cheaper, but I got a deal on it. Viva Ebay!

I am using a mexi fat strat to a fender frontman 15. I tried it out in Mars Music. This thing is really awsome for what it does. It sounds amazing for solos or akward playing. It doesn't go well with alot of gain, maybe a light overdrive.
Try some complex solos at a slower pace for some truly trippy effect. Good for an odd song or part of song, don't over do it.
This thing really is great at what it does, the only reason its not at 10 is because when you pick hard or make hard noises, it makes annoying repeats of pick scrapes and slams and stuff.

Unfortunatley the danelectro pedals aren't known for their reliability, infact they usually die with a big "bossish" stomp. I treat my gear with alot of care so this isn't a problem, the 60's models are larger and stronger. I am not <b>too</b> concerned.

It's pretty easy to use--the manual is useless, but it's not a complicated setup. 3 knobs, mix, speed and repeats.

The sound itself is pretty cool. Of course, you can't play in time with it, but that's the nature of the beast. It's definitely a one-song kind of effect--you wouldn't want to use it all over the place or the excitement of the sound would be lost, but for what it does, it's cool.
Now here's my complaint--
The speed goes way too low. Essentially, setting the speed sets the length of the backwards phrase. Set too low, it just makes really fast hiccups. I set it very high to get a realistic backwards sound. Below 2 o clock it's useless to me. Also, when you're holding a note, when the next repeat comes around, it's louder than the previous signal (because of decay) so if you hold a note, you get hiccups. I realize this is unavoidable, it's just something to think about before you buy.
My other complaint is that if your attack is too strong, you sometimes can get the attack of the note when it occurs even with the original signal turned off. So you hear *staccato note* *pause* *delay effect*. They should fix that, because it sucks. Pick lightly and it doesn't happen.
Overall, this is a very fun effect that you can use to trip out your audience. I can get basically three sounds out of it--normal backwards solos, cascading chords by playing one note at a time with a lot of repeats, and mixing the original sound with the delay for a cool spacey sound.

I got this for $45 at a music store that was going out of business. Great buy. I play hard rock stuff--Zeppelin & Tool-style originals. Guitars are a 79 335 and a Les Paul 56 reissue through a Mesa Tremoverb, Deluxe Reverb, Gibson Discoverer or Gibson EH-150. (I love amps.) This pedal is a lot of fun. If it were stolen, I'd probably skip it, but I'd buy another if they:
1. Increased the delay time so the the entire range of the speed knob is usable and the time was longer.
2. Got rid of those "hiccups" when you dig in too hard.

I have many different guitars but my main guitar is a fender strat with a duncan hot-rails in the bridge, that goes into a digitech whammy pedal, then a Boss DS-1 Distortion, then a Fender Blender, then the Back Talk, then a danelectro Danecho, then a EH Poly-chorus, and finally an EH Small Clone. I think this pedal sounds great, it creates many interesting sound and has basically infinite repeats if you turn the delay knob all the way up, and all the repeats sound backwards, its a cool sound.

Easy to use. Three knobs to adjust speeds and intesities etc... Could be a little more thorough but them it wouldn't be $114. The Boomerang is $450, but pretty complex.

I use a 335 with a boutique Holland amp and a ts9. It's not noisy. The effects are pretty powerful, it can loop a mellow sample or build on top of it to create a wall of sound. An excellent backwards guitar effect, very Jimi. I use it with a Mooger Fooger Ring Modulator and loop it during a long spacy techno funk jam in my band, semi Tortoise-like. It does what it is supposed to do for a great price, it deserves a 10.

I think this thing could be used by anyone... I especially like it for the music I play (Bitches Brew/Tortoise type stuff). I've been playing for 10 years and I wasn't aware of any inexpensive reverse/backwards guitar stuff so this is sweet! I would definitely buy it again. The only hard thing is to not use it too much, everyone will get sick of it, it'll make you want to play it all of the time. I will eventually purchase a Boomerang Phrase Sampler but that's a whole different thing. This thing is awesome, if you like the guitar solo in "Are You Experienced" than you need this pedal.

Three knobs easy to use. The mix that mixes the wet and dry signal is very edgy after 1 pm position

I like it a lot. I use it with a few other effects and it realy gives that sort of sigur ros sound if done right. It does have a tendency to sound to chopy in the breaks unless you turn the speed know down real low. also it is always a few second behind you. Not the best thing for live playing

Very easy use since there are only 3 knobs: mix, speed (sample time),
and repeats. Just plug in your guitar and your playing some cool reverse sounds!

This pedal sounds awesome! I can finally do some cool Adrian Belew stuff during a live performance! This pedal isn't just a envelope filter with a delay to make it sound like a reverse effect, it really does reverse the source material.

I sent the company some specific questions about the DR-1 before I
purchased it and they never replied back after a week of waiting. So I ended up just buying one and taking a chance on loosing money on shipping costs if it turned out to be a envelope/delay pedal.

I play pop-rock and the pedal is very appropriate for the genre.
It adds a sense of mystery and eerieness to the music, so I love
every ounce of this pedal! :) The only thing I can gripe about is the sample time - I just wish it was a wee bit longer. I'm still looking
for a nice midi controlled device with this kind of effect so you can
change the wet/dry ratio in real-time, but this pedal is worth every
cent until I see something else worthy of upgrading to.
