I've been through dozens of boutique overdrives in the past few years, and most sound no better than production pedals IMHO. The Interstellar Overdrive that I have is the one with a master volume control. This pedal works amazing for overdriving a tube amp. I set my amp(1968 Fender Bassman w/2-12" cab) clean, but on the edge on overdrive and use the Interstellar Overdriver to push it over the edge. This box works perfect for this application. It doesn't fool with my basic tone, it just kicks it into high gear. I was using a Fulltone OCD and was never completely satisfied with its compressed tone, it always sounded kind of processed to me. When I switched to the Interstellar Overdriver, it was like taking a blanket off the amp.
I don't get the reviewer below that stated that this pedal sounded "muddy", it is very open sounding to me.

This is one of the top 3 Overdrive pedals I've tried. I play hard rock and this box is perfectly suited for it. I've been playing for about 20 years and have tried everything. It preserves my amp's natural sound perfectly.

Very Easy, two knobs. No problem. It's very easy for it to sound good, just turn it on. If you want it to sound better, turn it up.

Amazing. Someone claimed that this thing sounds muddy and dull. I guess he doesn't like what tube amps sound like. This thing sounds like any cruncy amp you could ever want. I've never heard any strange noises or anyhing funky.
I am a producer in Brooklyn and I have developed a huge amount of respect for Death By Audio pedals. This one in perticular has an amazingly pure sound.
My only complaint is I wish it were more intense. It is already loud as hell, but I always want my pedals to go to 12. They've filled this desire with other pedals however.

Never had a problem, but the box says they'll fix anything for free. Can't beat that.

Never had to deal with them in person, but that's maybe the best kind of customer support.

I play and record in a variety of styles. This pedal is best suited for rock/noise/ experimental kinds of stuff. I have had great success recording classic rock stuff with a guitar run solely through this pedal.
I run a full service recording studio and have all the extemporaneous gear that goes along with that. Of my effects, this pedal has to be in the top 10. If it were stolen I would find the guy and steal it back. Never heard a better overdrive pedal.

Ok... after a few month of tinkering i fund that i hardly use it at all.
It sounds muddy and dead... and when used with other pedals it kills all the lovely frequenciz i like.
Ive tried it on many amps and with many guitars and it sounds ok at max.
It makes my Boss Bass Overdrive sound like a boutique pedal...
Oh and there is an annoying hiss in the background even in very low gain setings.
Dissapointing.

hmmm. ok when i got it my amp was at repair, but i really wanted to try it. so i plugged it into a mesa mark III and it sounded like shit...
i was very dissapointed. but then i got my amp back which is a 1969 farchi head (israeli boutiqe marshall clone) and it sounded really good.
warm and gritty, wouldnt call it smooth but pretty much exactly what i wanted.
the master volume can make it sound like a lo fi fuzz if you turn it almost all the way down.
basically its a dirty booster.
Oh and it keeps the tone of your guitar and amp perfectly.

Its almost exactly what i wanted... it could use more gain.
If it was stolen i would probably buy one those Zvex box of rock pedal.
i really like the fact that the tone of my guitar and amp is preserved.
If you have a cheap transistor amp with crappy sound dont buy it.
I dont think its the best OD out there and i think its overpriced.
But i like it.

I play 70's Rock'n'Roll and Blues too. For me the Interstellar Overdrive w/ Master Volume is the best. I had the original Interstellar Overdriver without Master Volume but this new model (w/ Master Volume) is FANTASTIC !!!

This pedal is amazing, it really does sound "real". I have used many different Overdrive pedals over the years, but none sound as natural as the Interstellar Overdriver. This is the perfect rhytmn pedal for me. It is also an amazing pedal for leads, the sustain is incredible. I should mention that to me this pedal was made for tube amps, there is plenty of volume to push the front end of my Marshall Plexi reissue. This pedal works better than any of the dozens I have tried to send my Plexi into beautiful Overdrive, The Best!

This is an amazing sounding overdrive, my favorite. I've tried many boutique overdrive pedals, and this is definitely the best. It has tons of gain, but always remains an overdrive pedal. This pedal works great for driving my amp into sonic bliss, it's very organic. The ad is right, the more you crank the knob, the better it sounds!

I'd definitely replace this if it ever gets stolen, this pedal is amazing! This pedal has a depth that no other overdrive even comes close to.
