******Important- READ THIS IF BUYING SECONDHAND GNX1!!!!!!********. If it has no powersupply (or not one to suit your country)be aware that it requires 9v 1300mah AC powersupply. Both amps and volts need to be exact apparently or it wont work. Also if buying from overseas I was told (in Australia)at a major music store that I had to supply the serial number because digitech will not give me a powersupply if it wasn't purchased from an authorised dealer in Australia. SECOND UPDATE:
Sorry, but I left out a couple of notes I thought people would be interested additionally in knowing concidering these newer Digitech boxes
Ease of use is 7, because the machines are VERY DEEP. You can certainly plug and go, but it takes a little practice to quickly navigate.
Absolutely worth the trouble. Get it down, you never need tha manual again. Not THAT hard to figure out.

Okay, read my comments below this second update as well please.
ADDITIONALLY-
GNX NOISE LEVELS EXPLAINED:
As previously mentioned, WHEN SET UP PROPERLY, the older GNX models as well as the GENESIS 3, like the GNX1, GNX2, GNX3 and GNX4 are virtually noiseless even without engaging the noise reduction. The Genesis 3 actually has the best signal to noise ratio of the bunch, but this really doesn't even matter when practically applied...
Every amp makes its own inherent noise- and this is always greater than the noise coming out of the GNX when adjusted.
The problem when you use the GNX models comes from not having the GAIN AND OUTPUT LEVEL levels hot enough to begin with (The menu driven levels- NOT the knob on the back panel).
For noise free operation, always start with the Amp Level at 99 (max). This is the GREEN, WARP, or RED level adjustment for each patch. You can then adjust relative volumes from one patch to the next with a combination of gain, and then adjust the LEVEL for the patch. Set your LOUDEST patch to 99, and then if necessary, reduce the level of softer patches down from 99.
Once you do this, a patch with an output of 99 (and sufficient GAIN Level- 99 is best for no noise) will not create any audible noise above what a straight guitar plugged into your amp with make. The GNX will be totally silent.
(See the review below for quality of sound from the GNX compared to a straight guitar patched into an amp.)
QUALITY OF EFFECTS
I have a lot of boutique pedals. I read about how "OH THERE IS NOT DIGITAL PEDAL THAT SOUNDS AS GOOD AS AN ANALOGUE PEDAL"-- and "These all-in-one sound like crap."
Hogwash. I have the pedals to compare them with, I've been an audio engineer and musician all of my life (well, an engineer for 25 years..)
I have Fulltone Pedals, Voodoo Lab pedals, boss pedals, and original vintage 60s and 70s pedals.
Here's the scoop from my vantage point- every pedal is different. Sound "Quality" is a totally subjective veriable. Crap and noise can be a VALUABLE asset to a sound, as can also pristine audio frequency response.
Go look on Fulltone's web site-- look inside his cabinet-- he's got a junky Univox Superfuzz pedal there (several actually) as well as many old pedals that were NOISY as hell (I know cause I had one). I have an OLD original Thomas Organ wah that sounds far from the $300 Fulltone wah, and it sounds GREAT!!! It has its own personality.
Now, there is something to be said for true-bypass, granted, but as I've mentioned already, set up your GNX correctly and I will bet you any amount of money you will not be able to tell the difference between a direct guitar into your amp, and through the GNX with no effects. I tried, it is totally hit and miss.
EXAMPLE- FUZZ:
Some pedals do things different than others-- an original Superfuzz is not bypass, makes a ton of background hiss (that's why I stupidly gave it away 10 years ago to a pretty girl....) and eats batteries. But it had a GREAT sound.
Today I tried to acheive the same sound using the ZONE stombox on the GNX-- DAMN!! It was "BETTER"-- why? The zone produces the same essential clipping wave as the Superfuzz, but the patch makes ZERO HISS, I don't need to replace batteries, and the mid range scoop is infintiely variable (you only had 2 choices on the Univox original). Otherwise it is so close its not funny, even getting some of that octave thing happening fully cranked.
I recently tested a Seymore Duncan Tweak Fuzz, and have found the Zone fuzz on the GNX vastly superior. I have a Fulltone 69 pedal, a very very nice fuzz, and the GNX zone holds its own, delivering full frequency response as well as a huge amount of tweaking ability.
No again "better" is subjective-- maybe you WANT the hiss.
In general I've found all of the effects and verbs and delays on the GNX series very usable. My GNX2 cost all of $105 on ebay, but it was worth twice this easily. The new GNX3000 does more and has better harmonic distortion numbers and better S/N numbers, so even at $350 or so, it is a very good deal.
Granted, some of the effects and some of the adjustments will be different, some less adjustable, some more adjustable than other pedals. The GNX effects delays and verbs kind of sit in the middle in terms of effectiveness in general-- some effects great, others just good- but usable.
In particularly, I like the ability to set up different reverbs and delays and then save to identical patches-- so the same patch with different verbs and delays.
For the money, impossible to beat, and you get a ridiculous amount of variety to work with. The GNX2 here, well, this is astounding what you get for the money, considering my recent discoveries about the QUALITY of the through-sound.
Digitech should be paying me thousands for this review..... ha!
I won't be giving up any of my separate pedals, but instead just use them as part of my arsenal. The GNX is a great sole or additional tool for any guitar freak.
(but they aren't).

The two things i see wrong with this pedal are: only 3 settings in each bank, which can create quite a mess on stage, and the parameter settings during tweaking are hard to use unless you memorize the earlier settings. its actually pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it though, and i never really need more than 3 patches per song.

BTW, i love my amp/guitar/pedal combo. i can jam in small rooms, clubs, and halls with the exact same setud and it sounds great every time. not amazing, but its consistent. i run a les paul standard w/ duncan pearly gates pickups through the GNX1 then thru a Fender DeVille 4x10. I love the growling mid range of the pedal mixed w/ my treble and bass on the fender. i dont think this would sound too good on a marshall though, its got too much grain in the overdrive (which is great for the deville). i would give this an 8 but, like i said, it probably wouldnt sound too good on a full marshall stack. also, the wah pedal effect is very slightly delayed and kind of tweaked wrong, but it works on stage.

I play hard rock (i.e. guns n roses) and classic rock mostly with a hint of metal. it handles all of them very well. If it were stolen, id probably buy a GNX3000 or a GNX4 b/c i love the digitech setup. way better than the boss multieffects boards. i wish it had another volume pedal for those wah and flanger settings that arent the right volume. thats all really. i like it alot.

Ok, right out of the box I was able to figure out Amp warping and how to pick my heads, cabs and effects without issue. Pretty intuitive interface on this device. Editing is pretty simple, you just have to turn your mind into there's-only--6-characters-for-a-description mode and be ready to think about what the abreviations mean. I bought the GNX-1 used so it did not come with a manual, but I was able to download it in PDF format from the Digitech site. Thank you Digitech. I'm not sure if the firmware has been upgraded or not.

I am playing an OLP John Petrucci signature guitar (read: it ain't the best but I've heard and played a lot worse) with 2 after-market Seymour Duncan SH-6 humbuckers which sound pretty great in it, either clean or dirty. I am currently running direct out into the line in on my pc, as I intend to use GNX mostly for recording. I'll be testing the MIDI in a few days when I get the correct adapter. The sound is crystal clear. I get no noise and have even forgotten that it's on more than once.
The effects on the GNX1 are pretty tight. I ran into a little rouble with Chorus on the Marshall but I think that was just inexperience. I've gotten it to sound pretty good with it and great without. Overall the effects sound really good individually and with a litle work they can blend nicely. My only problen is the Rectifier is too quite. Other amps have a much "louder" sound, even after adjusting amp and cabinet settings.
So far I have gotten sounds that are very close to Adrian Smith, John Petrucci and Alex Lifeson.
I currently don't have a guitar amp, as I am primarily a vocalist/bassist, so I am using a Peavey TKO 115 S when I want to move a little air. Mostly I run either through my pc or headphones, since I'm concentrating on being able to play what I hear in my head.

I'm into metal. Maiden, Opeth, Dream Theater, Fates Warning and other stuff in that vein. This thing has some great sounds for me to record my metal inspired ideas. Playing it through a 100 watt 15" it sounds great, even distorted, but I mostly run direct into my pc. I love how I can choose what I am outputing to in the utility function. Really seems to optimize the signal. I also like cleaner stuff like Yes, Rush, Eric Johnson and it's got those tones too. In fact there is an Eric Johnson sound built in that sounds pretty damn close stock and almost dead on with some tweeking.
I've been playing guitar for about 4 years, seriously for about a year and a half. I've been playing bass for almost 10 years and I play a black Ibanez SoundGear SR800 through a Peavey TKO 115 S. I also have an Alvarez RD-8 acoustic that I really love to play.
If you took away my GNX1 I would hunt you down and give you the worst noogie you ever had.
I really love how this piece of equipment lets me have so many different amp/cab combos. It really let's you customize your sound before you even plug it into the amp. I hate that it doesn't transmogrify into the GNX3000.
I played a couple of other pedals in the same price range as this one. I paid $100 U.S. so you can imagine what I was hearing. I also looked at some individual effects but this was really the way to go.
I wish I had a GNX3000, a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, a Roland Jazz Chorus and a sub-basement.
I've been using a program on my pc called Revalver to get my effects. I'm really in a learning an writing mode so working on the computer is great. The inherent problem with Revalver is that there is a very short delay between when you play something and when it comes out of the speakers. Very short but it feels like an eternity when you are playing to a beat or along with a cd. Not to mention the constant hiss. The GNX1 takes all that pain away and with the Jam-Along feature I can make mix-downs of my own stuff and burn them to a disk or can play along with the bands I'm trying to learn from. I'm finding that some of the tones I'm getting are pretty inspiring and taking me off in different and unexplored (by me) directions.
This is my first guitar multi effects processor so I may be over stating this but I think the GNX1 is a great piece of equipment.

No messing here. I upgraded from an rp200 which you can use without ever looking at the manual. NO chance with this big-boy. Even with the manual i'm still struggling to work out why some things happen. The manul does have a walkthrough to help you set up a patch which is useful but this pedal does need some time to master.
as seems to be the case with most of these pedals the presets give you an idea of what you can do but are mostly pretty naff.

For me the digitech pedals are the best. Other pedals always seem to sell themselves on how good the distortion is. Thankyou digitech for realising there are a lot of musicians out there who don't actually want to play metal! BUT...
I use the tweed, blackface and ac vox settings and on full gain they rock. the other setiings sound good to me although, as i said, i'm not a metal head so what do i know about rectifiers and stacks?
i'm yet to experiment with the amp warping ut seems like a nice idea and unique i should imagine amongst these pedals. whack a tweed on channel green, a marshall on channel red, stick the two together and you get some kind of **** on yellow channel. if you are looking for a completly unique tone, check this pedal out.
one more thing. forget about people who say digitech pedals sound too computer-like. this thing has so many sound options you should be able to get a tone. choosing your target source is a nice touch: amp (1x12, 2x12 etc), direct mixing board, mono, stereo etc

maybe it's not fair to keep comparing this to the rp 200 but i will anyway. the pedal on that broke after about a month (check out digitech's forum - this is a very frequent problem) and i always felt that it was actually more of a toy than a real pedal.
this however seems much sturdier by comparison. the rp kept me going live for about two years and i replaced it becasue i wanted something with more features. it's still in very good condition and i imagine this will last just as well.
i will use it without a back up, no probs

I use an epiphone SG400 through a hughes and kettner 100 tour reverb.
As i said, i use this mainly for the cleaner amp models tweed, blackface, ac vox. that's why i stuck with digitech when i upgraded - i knew they offered exactly what i wanted.
maybe if you're into heavier stuff it may not please you. i guess you'll have to read more reviews, try and have a go on one.
i'm not the greatest musician and i haven't got the greatest ear but mucking around on this thing is inspiring. yeah the drums are kinda naff but sitting in my room, with the lights down, i can play on this thing for hours coming up with crazy sounds and pyschedelic masterpieces (to my ear). cool. really cool.
past experience of digitech helped me choose but i did download a lot of manuals and check out individual features. this one has the most and the two 'live' programmes offer all the versatility most guitarist will neeed on stage (three footswitches either select presets or can be set to turn on/off effects/delay - as well as the expression pedal!)
check out prices. check out features. you will buy a gnx1 for sure.

Just to complete my GNX1 story, I have now got my Korg AX1500g and it is perfect. As soon as I plugged it into the Marshall I got the tone I was searching for in vain with the GNX1.
The array of FX aren't quite as extensive as the GNX1, but it's loads easier to edit patches and there is no time delay when moving from patch to patch in a live situation.
Phew...what a relief!!

I am used to using a Boss ME5 (and before that BOSS pedals) in front of a Marshall valve amp's clean channel to get my tone. I thought I had some good tones worked out after having a play with the GNX1 at home but the patches REFUSED to cut through the band at rehearsals.
I play in a rather loud 70s rock tribute band. I tried tweaking the patches, using different amp/cab/input settings over the next few weeks but the tone always sounded dampened and tame. In the end I had to put the Presence knob on my amp way up to 10 but the band still weren't happy so I sold it on e-bay!!
I'm used to fiddling about with parameters and menus with the ME5, so this wasn't a culture shock to edit patches. However the editing on the AX1500G and ME50 look easier to me.
One annlyance was that I had to set values for the green and red amps even if I didn't want to warp between them - it would be easier to switch the 2nd amp on only if you need it???
I was used to 4 patch pedals on the FX board, so only having 3 to choose from for any given song when playing live was a pain. Also selecting banks by scrolling up and down isn't as nice as hitting button 'Bank' and going straight there.
Last point - there is a 1/2 second delay when swapping patches that I wasn't used to with my ME5. I'm the only guitarist in the band so this was a pain in the butt!!!!

I use a Marshall JCM800 valve lead 2x12 combo with a Charvel guitar. I tried the GNX1 with the amp input, then tried the FX return of the Marshall.
The actual FX of the GNX1 are excellent and very versatile. The IPS sounds a bit artificial (like an effect rather than another guitar) but acceptable for the price of this unit. I liked the Wah, Yah, Whammy, Phaser, Octaver etc....but just couldn't find the basic amp tone to use with them!

The unit is sturdy enough, but I'm used to Boss so big deal!
I did find a couple of quirky things happening now and again, like the wrong values being saved whilst editing the patches.
I preferred the sturdy power lead of my ME5 to the AC adaptor, but this seems common to all modern FX units at this price.

I play classic 70s rock, eg Purple, Free, T-Rex, Sweet, even Osmonds!
I've been playing for 20 years, in bands for around 17 of those, so I've been around a bit!
I was happy with the tone of the ME5 but wanted to modernise it as it was getting very worn. I also wanted to utilise FX such as Wah, Yah, IPS, Phaser, Whammy etc into my sound. The intro to 'Crazy Horses' ROCKS when you use the Whammy pedal and gliss up at the same time!
I didn't need the amp modelling, as I had a lovely Marshall valve amp! Trouble is, you can't NOT use the amp modelling on the GNX1!! All I needed was FX written within patches, inc overdrives and distortions, but this wasn't possible.
The overall tone of the unit was like putting my amp into a cardboard box...and a very thick one at that!! This is after changing the input value on the utility, the physical input to the amp, the amp and cab models, the EQ...basically everything I could think of!
In a nutshell: try before you buy - using your own amp/guitar and preferably with the rest of your band around you!!
I'm about to bid for a Korg AX1500G and keep my fingers crossed!!!!!

Man, talk about love it of hate it. This unit is not a stomp box, and is definitely for those intent on instant gratification. I have to admit that I spent a bunch of money on a box of what I thought would be all the effects I could ever want. Took it home, and oh my! This sounds like hell. Then I spent about two hours taking presets and using them as points to jump off of to develop a pallet of some of the most outrageous sounds one could desire. As one of the other commentors mentioned, no you will not get the "I think my amp is breaking and the speaker has ripped distortion of Korn", but frankly, I don't really want my sound to be like that so I am not upset over not getting that sound. The Manual has a section presenting an example of how to edit a preset which was clear and consise and revealed the little secrets of the machine. Also, every guitar you play through it, and every amplifier you put it through will carry their own harmonic characteristics so a 2 minute change in guitar and amp results in a cascading of hours of tweaking all the personal presets. But after you learn more and more about the sounds you make and the ones you want to make, and learn where the buttons that produce it are on the machine, things get pretty simple. I have to admit at times there are times when I can't seem to get an odd distortion out of a clean preset, or a swelling. But this is because I haven't sat down, a played with the machine until it goes away. I usually redo the preset from scratch as it is quicker. There is definitely a learning curve.

I have used this machine over the last three years with two guitars, three amps, and direct into a digital studio. The first year and a half I used a Fender Stratacaster through a Fender Super 60 Amp. Both are from the early to mid 70's. It was a blues / classic rock band, and after a few weeks, this box really openned up a huge range of tonal possibilities. Believe it or not, I mainly got it for the noise gate. I looked at the price of a stand alone unit and then the Gnx-1. I would get so much more for little more money. Bought it. I use it in FX mode. The Super 60 could gets more and more trebly as the volume is turned up, so that could be hard to deal with at times, live.
Next, I started to use an SG Special to the GNX-1 through an Older Peavey KB-60 keyboard amp, and after turning the tone on most of the presets, it again constantly comes through for just about making any kind of sound I wanted. I needed to get the KB-60 repaired and put the GNX-1 into the power amp in of a Peavey Renown. This was very dark by comparison, and again the GNX-1 presets needed tweaked. This second band is everything to everybody. We play country, funk, metal, indie, alternative, oldies, British Invasion, new wave, Beatles, blues, hard rock, southern rock. Everything except for rap, choral music, and opera. The GNX allows me to reproduce a very wide range of tones and even play a mean slide.
I especially like that it has a tuner, and I can use the Wah Wah pedal as a volume pedal, which I do, all the time. It is really hard to have all the presets be the same volume.
A negative mentioned in the manual is that at times, large compression values coupled with effect patches that swell such as chorus, phase shifting, flanging, etc. can introduce this bizarre sounding distortion that at times seems to limit the amount of compression and effect one can dial in. This is where patience comes in. Like I said, they warned about it.
I don't like that the way I use the GNX, I have only a choice of 2, 3 if I warped a new amp from the other two, for any reasonable use in one song. And for each of the dual amp presets, I can only effectively use on particular effect. I admit that I don't often feel the need to have more than two or three different tones in a song, it would be nice to be able to get around a bit more easily. I will take one pair of amps, and then have a slew of different effects in about 5 different preset pairs. It works.
I give it a 9 because of the effect/compressor distortion.

I have used the GNX-1 pretty much every day for three years. I take care of my stuff. I don't dance on it, or jump on it. I simply step on the peddles. Once the wah pedal came loose and would not retain the location my foot would give it. I tightened it up with a rachet. I don't do much more than sweat on it. I transport it in a padded rubber maid tote so it is pretty well protected. Nothing has ever happened to it though the power supply converter is looking a bit ragged and I should invest in a backup. I practice once a week and gig once most weeks.

I might look into something different if this were lost or stolen, but I am not unhappy with it. Might get another one.
I wouldn't mind a bit more flexiblity with having the ability to call up just a change in the effect with a preset, but then I suppose this is actually a computer, and that might be difficult.
I had owned some Digitech pedals before, was happy with them so choosing this was not any huge leap. I do get curious about the Digitech RP 300 has to offer. Why they are different. They all make nice stuff. You can only take things so far.

I won't rate this to high, since I've only been getting the best sounds lately after finding out, that the trick is running it in the effects loop with the FX 1x12" setting...that way the sound is more balanced and not as muddy as when running it in the input, because you're not running two preamp stages. The matrix system rules though, becomes second nature very quickly.

The overall sound quality is good, some of the amp models are better than others, but I'm quite satisfied. The Mesa emulation simply rules, and there also an Eric Johnson-preset that's stunning with a single coil-equipped guitar. Then theres the "Crunch" amp setting, which sounds very much like a saturated el84 or 6l6 amp, and the Marshalls have got the ACDC crunch going on. The effects are good when paying mind to the price of this unit, but of course real stompboxes and a switching system would be preferable soundwise. There's nearly endless possibilities for tweaking both effects and amp sounds though, so I'm sure you can get just what you want out of this if you're ready to spend some time and effort with it. My rating is in comparison to other amp emulators -not a full size tube rig.

Well, there's sort of an issue with the wah, it starts out cold and will only switch on after a little while. This means that you have to have the board ready a while before starting your gig/recording session/whatever. I would gig it without a backup though, as the switches and whatnot seem pretty sturdy.

Overall, this board fits me very good. I've been playing for 8 years, electric guitar for 4 years. My intent was to use it with various bands and school band projects, and also learn a bit about effects and amps in the process. What I love about this thing is, that in a 250 euros, 1-2 kg package, I have some 15 amps and most effects with me. Sure, it doesn't sound *exactly* the same as the real deals, but most non-guitarists can't tell the difference anyway. And besides, on stage I would rather be able to go from wah-Mesa sound to a clean and chorused AC30 sound with a single tap of my foot than having to jump around like a madman, switching wah off, distortion off and chorus on all in sync. One last thing: the delay when going from one general setting to another (not between two amps within one setting) is supposedly 0.15 seconds or something like that, which is surely noticable, though not bad. If this is too much for you, you could go with the GNX2, which adds stompbox modelling, so you have two amps plus a tube screamer or boost or distortion box or something. This adds a bit of versatility. I give this product a 10, 'cause though it's not perfect in any way, the value is unbeatable, and the possibility of combining two amps is priceless.

This thing sounds as good as any solid-state amp. Tube amp? The tube amp presets sound pretty good, and I warped them into a nice, crunchy tube amp sound. Not quite as good as the real thing, but it's close. Those who give a rating of 1 or 2 probably haven't given this thing a chance. I've definitely heard MUCH worse than this.

Rugged and sturdy, but this thing freaks out sometimes, and I haven't figured out why. (I'll probably end up calling tech support, but I don't think it can be fixed very easily.) What happens is, while I'm playing, it will switch amp models or channels on me. No rhyme or reason. I'm playing in the Green channel with my foot nowhere near the pedal, and it flips to the Yellow channel. I just started doing this a few months after I got it. Weird. And far too scary to perform with it.

Pretty easy to use. Hard to get a GREAT sound, but there are a hell of alot of combinations...... However, if you know your stuff, you can reproduce pretty much anything that you've heard on a record.
Sound Quality

I use an Ibanez RG series with standard (crappy) pickups, direct into a desk for recording (stereo). The guitar's sound in naturally thin, but the GNX fills out the bottom end. Mids are still a bit low for my liking, but they're the best they've ever been. Distortions are average out of the box, but GREAT if you tweak them. I think you need a sound engineer's brain to get a really good tone, but the unit is more than capable. My favorite amp has always been the JCM800 (High Gain Custom) and the GNX reproduces that to the point where I can't tell the difference.... The Mesa Boogie emulation is good aswell, but needs more work to get it to sound like $500,000 worth of recording studio equipment.......
Bad points are the acoustic emulation, pitch shifting and EQ. I like to be able to adjust the range of frquencies I'm working with and the GNX seems to have a fixed "Q" value, so you can't tighten the frequencies. This can give you a really thick bottom end, which is hard to eliminate (but it's easily sorted in the mix). The acoustic stuff is unrealistic and noisy.
Having said all that, the distortion is great (almost as good as a tube amp), the wah is realistic and so are all the other FX. You won't do better without spending mega-bucks.

Getting a good tone from this bad boy is not an easy task, but it's not impossible. DO NOT count on the factory preset sounds to give you a clue as to the full potential of this processor. If you'll notice, nearly every preset has completely flat EQ setting- perhaps digitech is imploring YOU, the user, to get your hands dirty and mess around with this thing a little bit.
There is an extremely intuitive interface which this pedal uses. There's a bit of a learning curve, but once you figure it out, those 5 knobs and 2 or 3 buttons will run circles around any other processor. Any setting you can think of, you can get to it in a matter of seconds.
The manual is worth giving a brief glance, if only to orient yourself. As for firmware, I don't even know what that is.
Sound Quality
:

I've used this with all kinds of guitars, into a lot of different amps. To be honest I don't remember what worked and what didn't, but I've been able to get a sickeningly heavy tone with a STRAT RIPOFF that's probably not worth its weight in crap. When i play live i use a Marshall Valvestate 2x12, but the amp and cab simulation is so great that when i record i just go direct. If i think the tone is a little muddy, a little EQ'ing in the studio takes care of that with no problem.
I've been using this for everything i possibly can- playing along with the smashing pumpkins, stevie ray vaughan, hum. The thing is, you have to know what you want from the GNX1. If you go in bound and determined to sound like something, your chances of getting a good emulation are pretty good. The amp "warping" effect which seems to be the pedals selling point is actually rarely used by me. Mixing clean and crunchy tones together is magic. Warping 2 distorted tones together generally results in mud.
Since I'm a single-coil guy, I get a lot of noise from EVERYTHING i use, not just this pedal. But the GNX1 has a noisegate, which does such a good job that i rarely turn it off. However, the high-gain distortion settings will obviously produce a little more noise than a clean tone... and if you want to hear just how much noise while demo-ing it in the store, just turn off the noisegate. It's actually quite bearable.
The wah is no crybaby, but it is a wah, and is very usable. Chorus and other modulations are sort of one-trick ponies on the GNX1. They have one particular color to them that you either like or you don't. If you want to thicken a modulation effect up a little bit, try going to the Pitch Shifter section and turning on a subtle detuner on top of what you're already using.
This really isn't an item for the "stompbox crowd." I've never in my LIFE heard a stompbox that could sound as good as real amp sounds. But the GNX1 isn't designed to model stompboxes; instead it takes the place of rooms full of amps and cabs, racks full of effects, impossibly long pedal boards... and it manipulates all of them simultaneously in a way that no human being ever could. It simply offers so MUCH that you have to be really deaf to not find something that works for you. Years after its purchase, i'm still unlocking sounds I never could have imagined it making. I don't wanna call it a stompbox or a board or processor or even a preamp. It's a whole system that can replace so much of the crap that materialistic guitar players end up with.
Generally guitar pedals are marketed to teenage microconsuming machines who play in their bedrooms and want to sound like Kirk Hammett. The GNX system could easily leave the bedroom and kick ass at a rehearsal, in a club, or a hall, or a stadium. Digitech has outdone themselves. If a tone sounds flimsy or fake or weak, you can really sit down and mess with the knobs until it sounds right. The people reviewing this thing seem to be either tone purists who refuse to believe that anything BUT an expensive tube amp could sound musical, or bedroom warriors who know nothing about how a guitar mixes with a real band, or how it's supposed to be recorded, or how to sound musical.

It's been heavily used since i bought it about a year and a half ago. The little push-buttons are starting to be a little less sensitive, but other than that, I've had no problems. It turns on when i tell it to, changes sounds when i tell it to, etc. Although the footswitches and knobs are plastic, they're not going anywhere unless you're stupid and step on them, snap them off, or use your pedal as a blunt weapon. I'm sure many before me have sung the praises of the pedal's actual housing, which is more metal than your mama's kettle. I've gigged with it, recorded countless tunes with it, and I really can't imagine what could go wrong with it.

I play everything from old-school bebop jazz to experimental ambient metal to indie rock. I have about 11 years experience as a guitar player, and in those years I've played guitar in many different settings from Big Bands to garage bands. The GNX has had a place in all of them. If it were stolen, I would hope that somewhere on my computer, my tones were backed up.
It's really a love/hate thing with nearly all DigiTech products. Either you sit down, realize the immense potential it has, and make it the focal point of your instrument setup... or you find that it really has nothing to offer you. For me, it was the former. I now have unique tones that are going to turn heads, and other guitar players are gonna ask me about when they hear it. But to re-iterate, the GNX is not a cute little addition to your already monstrous pedal board. It's the replacementreally only useful if it's the only thing drastically altering your sound... because after that point there's just too many factors to mess with. If you're considering buying it, or have bought it and want to know where to go, there's a lot going on at the digitech website... but what good is a "community" of bedroom rockers? My suggestion: Take a deep breath, sit down with either a nice amp or a good pair of studio headphones, and play till you bleed. That's the only way you'll get an idea of what you're working with. You can hear some of my recordings done with the GNX1 at www.purevolume.com/boygenius

Owned this unit for years and has been used to death. The sounds are great and everything you should need is included. The amount of editing options can seem a little overwhelming, especially to a beginner but are just great fun to spend hours messing around with. The first thing anyone should do is get a MIDI cable and download the editing software. it makes editing a lot simpler and easier to work out. I regularly upgrade to the latest firmware and is a breeze to do. I haven't seen the manual since I bought the thing and have never needed to go hunting for it. I tried to play metal with this but it is terrible. I'll never buy another Digitech. I already own the RP100 and it is even worse. I'm going down to the pawn shop later today to drop all my Digitech stuff off. If it was stolen? I would try a Boss. Make music? I made several riffs with my amp only and when i try to play it through the GNX 1, it totally ruined it! Again, I would never try another Digitech. I know they are going to be terrible.

First of all: excuse me for my english I'm from Argentina.
It's really easy to get a good sound for the gnx-1, but you have to look after it, warp models is easy but not all the amps are good, I really like the rectifier and the modgan (JCM900).
A really good feature is the FXmode, you can use the switches for the diferents efects, for example: the 1) for amp switch, clean tweed sound and hi gain rectifier distortion, 2) the efect, chorus, flanger, etc, and 3)the delay, also with the expression pedal you can control volume, and gain and the wah with the V-switch.
The manual is good, explains what the gnx can do in an easy way and you can easy create patches with the software genedit or download some patches from the web site of digitech.
I bought my gnx a month ago and it had the last firmware so I didn't upgraded it.

I use it with a modified Yamaha eg112 and a Squier champ 15 or a Marshall JCM900. The efects are the best thing in this unit, the wah is excellent and it's work like a real one thanks to the V-switch,the other efects are great too, the delay, flanger, the WHAMMY, chorus, IPS,etc. I can get the sound of my favourite metal bands like METALLICA, Iron Maiden and Godsmack, but i can't reach the Yngwie Malmsteen sound, I tried it but i can't I think the secret is in his fingers!!!. But if you are looking for the screaming wah of Kirk Hammett or the Iron Wall sound of Jamz Hetfield this is for you!!!
I think that the only bad efect is the pitch because is a ghost note when you play with it, you hear the pitch note and behind the real note an it sound awful, but is only one. So I give to the GNX-1 a 10 in sound quality.

I play Heavy Metal, Power Metal and some Steve Vai, joe satriani Stuff. It match really well with my guitar and my practise amp (champ15) or my rehersal amp (JCM900) and I can get any sound I want in a easy and faster way. First of all you have to know the sound of the amplifiers that are emulated in the gnx-1 so you have an idea of which ones can match in a good way. I've been playing for 4 years and I really admire the maestro YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, this unit help my to get close to his sound and to create my own music. If it were stolen I would buy it again because it have all that I need, nothing more, nothing less.
I love the distortions, the efects and the V-switch, it's great, you can get the wah when you really want without changig patches. i only wish that it have a down bank switch but nothing its perfect, no?. I compare it with all the zoom units, GFX 4, 5, 8, and it is superior in all the ways so great Job digitech!!!!

If you are looking for a multi-effects pedal this is it. The GNX2 & 3 have bells and whistles that are not really needed unless you have the flexability to splurge and spend the extra bucks. Gotta run it through a clean solid state amp or PA, best if you bypass the amps preamp stage. If you are technical you will really get into it. Firmware upgrades/patches are available from Digitech. Digitech outdid themselves by creating this unit. Curious to see what they can come out with to top the GNX series.

I have a lot of guitars and hey this thing is really great! Strat, Paula-like Framus, semic acoustic with P90 (hey, that is a great guitar).
Originally owned the Johnson JM60 (its the J-station with an amp) and played a lot with this Line 6 stuff, but the DigiTech outperforms each of them easily. If you are not too much looking for "original" sounds (which is almost impossible) but more looking for "your" sound, this one rulez.
The verstile manner of mixing up different amp models gives you great variety of sounds, the effects are great (except the noise gate is better on the Johnson), and the missing of the stomp boxes can easily be compensated by e.g. Marshall Jackhammer.
All the guys, complaining about the headphone sound are not reading the manual, there are two setups for headphone/PA or for guitar amps. The only unit on the market providing this option.
Another great thing is the set of min and max values for the pedal, that gives you live the chance to have a solo and a background sound and you don't run the risk to be too loud or no one hears you.
For what its built, the sound is excellent.

I have additionally a Jackhammer, and no will go for a solid state amp (with a good clean sound) and a good box (any recommendations?). This unit helps your creativity, but also gives the chance to sound "just like". Not a lot of noise or clicks like the other units, very dynamic and great effects. Would buy it again. The POD is more expensive and offers less!

It's both easy to use and somewhat hard. Programming intial sounds are quite easy, but when you start to get really picky about your sound quality things can take a while. What to remember is you can get this thing to do almost anything, it just might take a while.
I did put a review earlier for this same product. I'm just trying to help some more.

I settled for a solid state Laney Linebacker 100R head and a 4x12 Jackson cab. I found the tube heads that a have, while they are great heads, add another amp sound that just made the GNX1 a bitch. My guitar I use with it is a Fender Floyd Strat that is S/S/H. After my intial couple of days of screwing around with the GNX1 I found a couple of things out...The GNX1 can be pretty picky! If I made a sound patch I liked and changed my guitar or cab it would sound pretty different ( we all know it should but it was offen very undesirable ) Another couple of notable major things some people are missing when they play with this thing is you gotta get a really nice clean sound from the amp you are playing through and mess with the output level on the GNX to get things to jive, it makes a major difference. Also as some other have said this thing sucks useing headphones. Shouldn't it though? If you skip a real amplifier and a cabinet what the hell do you have? You sure lose a lot of dynamics if you just use it direct. Bass players and keyboards can go direct into a mixer, the rest of us can forget it. I do sit in my easy chair and go direct sometime but it's not to make new patches or wonder why I have no sustain.
As far as the effects and amp models go this thing is out of this world! The only effect that is a little weird is the noise gate, it cuts in a little too fast on most presets and needs a lot of attention on your patches.
The sound quality that you CAN get are quite amazing despite what some others may have said. Lots of playing around with the EQ's and stuff but you can hit the sound you need.

The GNX1 is a music maker. I have been playing for over twenty years and play everything and I mean everything. The band I WAS in ( just packed it in ) did everything, Zep, Metallica, Heep, Hoobastank, Kid Rock, Walsh, Foo Fighters, Skynard, SRV and originals. After having this huge daisy chain of pedals and crap on the floor and constantly hitting the wrong thing or kicking out a power supply this was my dream come true. I was buying a tuner when the salesman said, " der, this thing tunes." and pointed at the GNX. Now I have this wonderfully clean floor and every sound I can think up. Like me, the other guitar in our band is kinda shitty on these "processors" and really snubbed me when I showed up with this. In a few minutes he was all over the thing. It really helped when I whipped out EVH's "cathedral" without touching my volume. Can you understand how cool it is to have just got done playing " The Unforgiven " and while the band tunes play " Mid Summers Daydream " ( a great old Triumph acoustic )? Trust me it's cool!
The GNX1 is not the answer to every need I have and will never replace the sound I can get from my tube amps but until I get a monkey to A/B box and hit effects for me this is a great thing to own.
Now, ( I always put my 2 cents worth more in ) just practice. Please. Don't get blown away and you gotta go and get a this guitar of that effect. Get on your technique. I had a ten year player checking me out and right there wanted to trade me a awesome ESP. He thought my Jackson Dinky just wailed. Wailed until I plugged in his ESP. Now that thing wailed! The GNX1 isn't going to make you wail if you can't. You're going to just go from sound to sound playing bar chords for three minutes and go on to the next sound and play more bar chords!?!?! Spend sixty bucks on Curt Mitchells videos instead ( or on a few lessons ). When you get over laughing at the 80's look he has he'll learn you a little something about putting your fingers and pick on the strings.

I am using a Laney Linebacker 100 Head and Jackson 4 X 12 cab. A Fender Fat Strat Floyd Rose, Jackson Dinky reverse and a few others here and there. The first thing you should do to make the GNX1 sound right is to go direct ( use the Bypass mode ) and get your amp to sound GOOD and CLEAN. The GNX1 seems a little moody when you change from amp to amp or guitar to guitar, just start from scratch and change your amp and get it to sound right and the GNX1 should sound great. Most stock settings are very dark and bassy but that is the cool thing about this is that YOU CAN MAKE THE PRESETS SOUND LIKE ANYTHING YOU WANT!
This comes with 48 presets that never change so you never lose a original sound.
You can modify any of the preset sounds into a shape that you can use.
It comes with about a ton of effects that you can put in and take out.
Remember the presets are a combination of two different amps and maybe a few effects ( sometimes a lot ). So don't forget to give yourself a few simple plain amp sounds with no or very little warping. I think that is where a lot of the real dark, muddiness can come from on some of the presets.
This is one cool pedal. I have my banks named for the artists that we play. The first bank I named "Sandman" it has one of the presets CLNCHO as the first sound and then two sound that I made THKCHO ( a heavy Rectifier and chorus sound ) and METLED a newer Metal lead sound. Then in my second bank I have three old Master o Puppets sounds, one with a wah... you get the idea. Now at the touch of my foot I have a sound to play clapton to acoustic and santana to slayer.
Not every sound is great out of this but it is sure helping the ease of playing.

I gotta say I have been very resistant to these types of gadgets in the past. I have tried a Boss like this one ( I am a huge Boss fan )and while i thought they where kinda cool most of the presets sucked! I mean the thing ( boss ) where you play one note and the effect plays this huge asending and desending riff sucks bad.
Now I have to have a bunch of sounds that are very different from the last song we played and this is a great way to do it. I can just get done with 3 a.m. ( acoustic ) and then hit a bank that has my Molly Hatchet sounds, then switch to Metallica and then play Cathedral ( without ever touching my volume ) I love this thing.

Easy to set up and make presets, manual is thorough and not mysterious. The only thing that sucks is that as you're editing parameters, the LED's flash from left to right across the matrix, making you have to follow the dots until you get to the parameter you want. Very annoying. Just leave the dot on the parameter I've selected, O.K. Digitech???

Here's where things go downhill fast. Let me first say that I cut my teeth on an RP6, then graduated to an RP-2000( Great Box, more later ), so I know what Digitech is capable of in the sound dept.
Before I even THINK of plugging a preamp/processor into a power amp or an amps FX Loop, I sit down with a pair of HIGH QUALITY headphones, direct out of the unit, and create my sounds. The GNX-1 fails miserably in this department.
1) The headphone output does not have NEAR enough volume to really hear the frequencies when you're trying to E.Q., and having that volume is absolutely neccesary! The RP-2000 did not have this problem. Sure, you could run the signal into a mixer and boost the volume there, but then you introduce coloration from the mixers preamps...unacceptable!
2) The cabinet simulators/models are TOTAL CRAP! They all sound way too dark, except the "American 1X12", and even IT doesn't have an acceptable sound. The "cabinet tuning" parameter does NOTHING to solve this problem, so if you're planning on using this device to record direct...Forget it! Once again; the RP-2000 did not have this problem, and sounded WAY more realistic!
3) Digitech claims that the models used in the GNX series are the same as those used in the RP-2000, and that may be true, but the E.Q. section is diffrent and when you combine that with the TERRIBLE speaker sims, the GNX series just doesn't even come close to upstaging it's predecessor( RP-2000 ).
So did I run the unit through a power amp and speaker cab? Nope. If I can't get a good sound out of the unit itself, then what good will it do to "amplify a substandard sound"?
As for the mixing of sounds, or "hypermodels"; it's a great idea, but if all you have is TWO crappy sounds to mix together...well, you get the idea.
I really wanted to like this unit. After owning the RP-2000, I was excited to see what would come next. Sadly, the result is VERY disappointing and if I wanted to stick with Digitech, I'd sell this thing and find a good used RP-2000 on Ebay. As it is, I've recently purchased a Rocktron Chameleon Online off of Ebay, and I'm pleased to report that I'm discovering what it means to have that thing they call REAL TONE! In short; I'm done with toys.
The only good thing I can say about this catagory is that you can turn the preamp, E.Q., and cab sim off, and just use this as a stand alone effects box. In that respect, Digitech does make good sounding effects.

As it stands, the flagship of Digitech quality and sound is STILL the RP-2000. The GNX series aspires to much, but produces little.
Save your money, go online to Ebay, and buy an RP-2000 if you insist on purchasing a Digitech product.
If however you're ready to take the next step, skip the Digitech and come on over to Rocktron; where toy-tone is but a bitter memory.

The factory presets are really decent. They kept me entertained for many hours before I thought about tweaking them or creating my own. Editing took a little extra time to figure out and I did eventually end up using the manual. There are quite a lot of features crammed into a small area. Maybe too much. Because of the fewer pedals you are limited in the number of changes you can make before you actually have to use your hands. It might make performance work a little more challenging. The upside is that all of the pedals are multi-featured so you still have a lot of variety at your toe-tips.

I was thrilled when I first heard it. I play a Les Paul into either a P.A. or into the pc. The sound is awesome. I was very surprised at how real it sounded and the complete absence of latency when running through additional digital processes. This thing is much better than the RP's. Plenty of realistic tone through all of their amp/cabinet models. The quality of the effects is great as well. And plenty of tweekability all around. A couple of the presets are artist specific, Eric Johnson, Santana, and the sound is very close. The Johnson setup screams "Major-mode me."

I really like this thing. I play all styles from classical to make it bleed. This is definately a good match if there is any amount of variety in your style. Also, for $250 your not going to touch an amp thats worth a shit, let alone have some of the baddest bastards ever made at your beck and artistic call. Its more than just a reasonable faxcimile. Other modlers and multi-effects have seemed to be lacking in sound quality, realism, too much latency and any other number of digital crossover downsides. I don't have any of those complaints so far. Although I'd like to see more foot control surface and have less "hands" on. Yeah, it helps me make music. I don't waste time screwing around trying to get a good sound out of it. Without the distractions and with the great sound, creativity flows.

Allright this thing is easier as it looks. After 10minutes of extensive reading the manual got me where I wanted it. Each pedal knob or whatever you can push turn or press has about three functions at a time. It is easy to get the sound you like except for some little anoing little isseus:
1. Each time you turn a knob it doesnt remember your old settings so you have to check every time before editing.
2. At some moments the whole thing likes to demo itself and keeps displaying his settings eg.
Playing at home or practice would not give too much problems but I wouldnt try this thing onb stage. You cannot switch banks up and down with no pedal and every time you switch bank you hear a short stop in sound.
Ill give it a seven because the on stage performance is not as well as i hoped.

Ok this thing has what a guitarist need to play normally.
I am playing on a crapy Aria proII guitar and got it plugged in right into an old onkyo amp (strange setup dont you think! He im just a student and all the bands I join fall apart).
I have managed to get mettalica, Guns and roses and even overdrive like sounding bleus out of this thing. The acoustic simulator works fine except when playing on the highest string.
NEVER USE THE PRESETS!! They suck alot (except for the acoust and the solo).
You have to edit the sound yourself or this thing won't sound well.
The cabinet simulator sound great and the amps too. I also like the pickup simulator. The wah sound great, much better then on my old korg axg1. The rest of the effects do also great. Only the pitch shifter and the decall somehow have false notes in them (Pretty usual for multi-effects by the way).
The equaliser is a hard thing to control though easy to use. It easily gives a strange dark twist to the sound.
The noise gates do their job fine but you have to balance them yourself.
All this sounds great but the overal sound somehow sounds locked up in a giant room. When you try to increase the volume your amp will distort so it has to be the pedal. I hope digitech will fix this in the future.
A little story from my own at the end:
I hate it when people shit around about digital sounding pedals. Ok everyone has a opinion and here is mine. No matter what pedal or amp you buy. the electronics consist of transistors and they are all made of silicium. So are de microchips in de multi-effects. The difference is that transistors provide a less reliable signal so give a more crapy old 50ts sound. So the gnx would be more a pedal for people who play korn, mettalica or guns and roses. But if you are planning on playing music such as radiohead or jimmi hendrix. better use the transistor based pedals from boss.
Not only the effects do the job, the fingers are the most important. you can buy yourself a new pedal every week but you wont sound better unless youre playing allready for lets say 10years.

I once had a animal guitar with a boss os-2 but it got stolen right before performance. I do own a boss ds-2 (NOW thats a piece of shit whe are talking about!!) and a korg axg1 (Nice for beginners).
The gnx do have alot of functions. Even that much that i actually begin to wonder what it can't do. It sounds great having a large range of sound and amp variety. (It sounds hell better then the old korg or other amps i ever heard).
I would not use this thing on stage unless it isnt an important concert.
I it gets stolen though I would get a new one. Since you sound pretty proffesional for verry cheap.
I though have read all the other opinions and discovered I have been paying too much for this thing.
It gets an eight because it sounds great in the end (except for the little isseus such as the far away like overall sound)and offcourse because you can't simply get on stage with this thing

I use a Fender Fat Strat through the GNX 1 with an extra Hot Rod distortion through a Fender Bassman 2x15 half stack. This sounds great. There are many different amp models that you can use as well as different effects. The effects sound great. The chorus is good, reverb is superb, phaser and flanger are both some of the best that I've heard. The wah pedal is one of my favorites. You can turn the wah on and off by just stepping on the pedal. The volume pedal is a very nice touch too. It is a very smoth transition in volume levels. The amp modeling feature is cool. Some of the amps are convincing. The distortions that you get from the amp modeling are good but I bought a Digitech Hot Rod for a more tube sound distortion as my Bassman doesn't have a distortion channel. I'll probably use the Hot Rod Distortion half of the time and the distortion from the GNX 1 the other half of the time. Over all it is a great sounding pedal and a big improvement over the RP series which I had before.

I do wich that it had more pedals to move through the patches with. That is the only draw back in features. It does a great job of bringing out creativity and easy to program the sounds you need if you read the manual.

Well, it was a little more simple with my Digitech RP7 and RP3. I only have this baby for a few days, so i cant say by now its an easy thing to use. Those warped stuffs and those hard EQ things on them are not for beginiers......But i manage to understand how it works by now.

Great sound, i have a Cry Baby 535Q ,Jim Dunlop of course, and this thing sounds almost equal in tone!! The distorsions are not really ground breaking....not ehemmm.... like a Triaxis and i feel them very limitated. But the clean efects sounds great. The whammy on it have a BIG diference with the before procesors above mentioned (RP7 and 3) you can play it in real time. The RP's had a delay on the time you played them and the time they sound. In the GNX1 this is on real, real time!!! I dont care too much for purists who claim to be technicians but this little stuff have good sounds.

Not the true thing, but a very nice tool for beginers (those who claims to be "Full fledge sound-ingeniers should know at first that this are not for pros.....so you look ridicoulous bashing this little fantastic tool for guitarists....)If you want to have a good time with it its a pleasure for your ears. I dont think you spend much time whining because you dont have a $10000000 gear with you.....and if you are playing on a local bar or something like...mmm...(your room?) this is the sh1t!! I dont regret any cent inverted on it. No one seems to care about the midi stuff on it and the drums for practice too. They are a very good tools for every kind of musicians around. My music tastes are DREAM THEATER(John Petrucci of course), JOE SATRIANI, STEVE VAI, and most of those shread guitarists around...and i have 13 years playing. This GNX1 its a cool procesor for you if your not a close minded retarded who thinks that the only thing that could sound great its a ton of dollars transformed into gear....great sound depends on every ear. BUY IT!!

I'm no computer whiz and not much of a gear head. I wanted something that would give me plenty of options that I could use onstage quickly and easily without compromising tone, and this was it. I easily walked through the manual and got a basic understanding pretty quickly. After about 6 months, I went back through the manual and started to master some of the editing functions. The sound keeps improving, the more I use this pedal to it's fullest potential.

I gig through a Fender Am Deluxe strat(lefty) through the pedal and then into a Fender Deville(yes, I'm a Fender man). I have practiced through this pedal into a Crate SState(35 watt) and even tried it into a Peavey Transformer just to see sound quality. It performs best with the Deville(although its HARD to get a bad sound of this amp). This is a very good pedal(not great!) here's a rundown of strong points and weaknesses. Chorus, Reverb, amp modeling, cabinet modeling all sound GREAT. It's weakness is the Ya Ya and Wah effects. This is a shame since I had to buy a decent wah pedal to get the sound I wanted, thereby making things more complicated when I'm trying to simplify.
The chorus is good enough that I even run my accoustic(Guild D25,told you I was a fender man) through this pedal and then into an SWR Strawberry blonde(I know, not a Fender) when I want to add chorus to my accoustic.

Works great. Never had a problem with the pedal as a whole, but I don't suggest using the tuner if you want an accurate tuner. I don't care much for the lighted readout, we do some outdoor summer gigs and the sunlight drowns out what little light this thing puts out.
YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS THING DOESN'T WORK WITH ANY OTHER AC ADAPTOR. This is an improtant detail if yours bites the dust. Mine hasn't yet, but I am paraniod it will leave me high and dry one night. Because it hasn't, I won't deduct points for this. But I will take off a few for the weak tuner.

I would probably not get another one, just because my next step up will be to a modeling amp with great tone(VOX would be great, but our lead guitarist just got one and there's no sense doubling the same sounds on stage) like a Cyber Twin. TOLD YOU I WAS A FENDER MAN!!

This is just a quick update on my progress with the GNX-1. I continue to be amazed at the possibilities of this little box! If you really know your amps, you can come up with some incredible combinations that otherwise just don't exist in the "poor mans gigging world"! I'm just about peeing my pants to see what Digitech comes up with next!
And by the way; I went to my local music store to check out the new POD XT. I wanted to see if I was missing anything, and I can tell you that the answer is a LOUD "Hell No"!!! I don't know WHAT those guys are on out there in the sound lab, but thier models STILL sound one and two dimensional at best! And THEY are supposed to be the "Industry Standard"??? I think NOT! Digitech is just CREAMING the competition, and I for one am hella' glad! lol!!!

I give this an 8 or an 8 1/2 for ease of use.... if you're not familiar with Digitech products this might be a little intimidating, but it's not bad. Most buttons or knobs serve 2 or 3 functions. Only having one switch to change banks is very inconvenient. You have to press and hold to go down, and tap one at a time to go up.... so if you need to change sounds in the middle of a song while you're singing, it can get REALLY interesting.

Most of the sounds are good to excellent. The tremolo and vibrato are great, the clean tube sounds very much like a Fender Twin, the Tweed rules, the Marshalls and Mesas sound great. The intelligent pitch shift harmony isn't nearly as good as on my GSP-2120, though... there's a "ghost note" below every note you hit, and it sounds really crappy. I use very high quality guitars (Parker Fly, PRS, Anderson Holllow T) and amps (Vox AC-30, Reverend Hellhound) and they all sounded great, whether going through an amp or going straight to the mixing board, which I did most of the time, because I do a lot of singles.

Built out of solid metal. I used it without backup all the time. I've used Digitech stuff for 10 years....a GSP-21, and RP-10, and a GSP-2101 which I upgraded to the 2120. The 2101 broke down after 3 or 4 years but was fixed right away, the RP-10 had some display problems after 2 years, but the 2101 is still kicking hard 6 years later.

This is a good unit, but if I could do it over again, I'd buy the GNX2, because it has "up" and "down" bank buttons. Plus it adds stompbox modeling, whcih would be cool. The GNX3 also adds an input for a second continuous controller, which I think all 3 models should have. This is extremely convenient.

A total of 1 hour tops with the manual, and I was good to go. I have owned other Digitech processors in the past, so I'm already familiar with their layout. Manual covers all of the options and aspects in a very easy-to-follow way.
Sounds are as good if not better than the other companies doing modeling, but the ability to blend those models into new sounds is exclusive to Digitech. This alone makes the product worth consideration; it's a tone-sculpting dynamo.

I run the unit direct to a Carvin Fet series power amp, and I run in stereo. The unit is exceptionally quiet, and it's obvious that Digitech has made some much-needed improvements to the noise gate. The effects sound as good as anything out there, and Digitech gives you a boatload of them to choose from.
The only tricky part is working with the EQ. You have to sit down and really LISTEN to which frequencies work best with your guitar, but that's to be expected. I suggest using headphones when eq'ing so you can really HEAR those frequencies. I also use phones to construct my patches with. That way, when they hit the power amp and cabs, the patch already sounds great.

With the ability to combine amp models and switch between your creation and another amp channel, this thing is a powerhouse. Best of all, coming up with your OWN signature sound without lugging multiple amps is now a reality. If somebody stole my GNX-1, I'd probably step up to the GNX-2. This is simply a great product, and a real price/performance winner. And no, I do not work for Digitech, I'm just a musician in Kansas City who appreciates an innovative, great-sounding product that most any musician could afford.

I use to run through a midi device and It sounded good but took 4 years to master. The GNX1 is as simple to use as it gets except for the e-qing. The problem is this, I dont know if my amps e-q should be zeroed out and use the GNX e-qs (both effects channel and dial up presets) or use all of it. That is the ONLY problem I see. If someone knows E-mail me---hgsmoofie@aol.com

LOw noise is key, this is great for that. I really love the multiple distortions, but what I like is I can use all the presets minus the amp models and different cabs, allowing me to set up my own sound with all the effects. I fell in love all over again once I discovered that great flexability, and it's only one small unit.
I run this through a Crate 2200HT half stack, then through my Berringer P.A.to Bagend speakers while jammin on my Ibenez Gax 70 and My special sweety Peavey Wolfgang guitars.
I love the Nugent fuzz and the Poison clean chousy crunch. I get every sound I look for. Only the equalization needs to be clarified for setting up, whether or not to use amp settings or not.

I play Hard rock, country, and whatever sounds good. With the Gnx1 I can play any style I can learn. A great match! I listed my gear already but here goes, Crate 120 and Crate 2200HT 1/2 stack, Berringer 14 channel P.A. with a Qsc Power amp driving Bagend speakers. I play a Ibenez gax 70, a peavey wolfgang. I also play an alvarez acoustic with a built in package. I coil all this together with a pioneer home system for D.J.jobs when possible.
I'm 39 and have been playing for 24 years now and I will Rock Til I drop, even if I get seasoned with age.
If it was stolen, someone would be praying. I guess I'd have to make a repeat purchase, but it would be painful.
I love everything about the Gnx1 except for the E-Q confusion. My favorite feature I think is the flexability, My amp Plus all other amps is a hell of a lot a ampsssss.
There are so many products that I just gave a Ballpark fig. for everything I bought together and this was the last part of the package. Rick's Music world did a great job providing me with all I have for sound at a real deal.
It's great for being musicaly innovative and Powerful for performing, Oh Yeh, Its also a great Teacher! No need for a lesson, just pop in a favorite chop and it YOURS!
Again, If someone knows if the E-q knobs of your amp should be leveled to ----- flat and center. Please let me Know at

You can easily get killer sounds out of this unit but it may require some editing skills beforehand. I like digitechs approach to editing, it is dam intuitive but you also may have to read manual to get some additional features, eg, cabinet tuning feature when you have to hold status button for two secs. What about firmwares, i bought it already having v.1.4 so there was no need to upgrade, this far it works fine. I am also a IT engineer and this powerful unit would be more powerful with sort of undo option because every tweaking you do changes the sound a lot. Yes, the manual could wish better.
And one MISSING thing for gnx1 that it doesnt have an optional controller board, at least havent heard, browsing presets on gnx definitely sucks, so i dont think it would be easy to use on stage. Hope gnx2 and 3 are more friedly.

I am using jackson ps4 guitar, but i very rarely plug into amp, i mostly connect directly to pc for i do a lot of recording. Digitech has done a great job about sound quality, there is no brag about having studio quality effects as well. noise gate is irreplaceable thing. accoustic simulation is crap, but then again it comes to tweak noise gate a bit. I am also using korg ax1000g and can assuredly declare its expression pedal feel a lot more comfortable, yet it is smaller. digitechs v-switch is a bonus for gnx1, and exp pedal links are amazing. Ah, yes, since I plug into pc and have a stereo i rarely feel a very big difference to connecting it simply into an amp. ok, the same rarely i use phaser and similar stereo features, but chorus could be better. Presets usually suck but gnx1 has few usable after a minute of tweaking. i am comparing them with ax1000g once again which are dam pismire. pickup simulation feels very realistic, wish there were more delays and parameters for reverbs but for the quality they give back its ok. oh, yeah, and distortions: rectifier will be the beloved thing of everyone into korn and bizkit stuff, it suits even death metal needs, seriously, but the other types needs a lot of turning knobs to get the maximum out of it. I dont believe that i can get a sound of steve vai or nuno bettencourt out of this unit in no way, because theres a lot in hands rather than every new effect you buy.

I mainly use it to record with, going direct into the board,it is a dynamite recording preamp, the effects are definitely studio quality, very quiet and as for as tonal range it is limited only to the users imagination. I had origionally looked into the Line 6 Pod 2.0, which has excelent sounds of its on, but what attracted me to the GNX was the ability to create totally unique tones. It is kind of like having your own technician on hand to quickly build any custom amp you want, the only limitations with his preamp is your own imagination.

I liked the tones that this unit provided. It seemed to have good standard effects and the distortions seemed pretty nice out of the box. The cabinet warping feature was really cool. There are 1,000?s of different combinations that could potentially be made from this unit. This unit seemed quite capable of producing pretty convincing vintage and metal tones at the fairly low volume levels I tested it out at. I did not like the fact that there was only 1 pedal to change patches up or down with? however the more expensive models do have this ability as well as the Genesis 3 does with the optional controlx floor controller. All in all it seemed like a pretty respectable unit, but it is a bit pricey currently at $299 for the GNX-1 and $399 for the GNX-2 which has a couple of additional features such as stomp box modeling and a talk-box type of ability.

I like effects processors. So, when faced with a beast like the GNX1, I'm willing to be excruciatingly patient with the manual, tender at first when making adjustments, and delicate about factory patches. That being said, there's a certain order in the way this machine is laid out...it has the same knob/matrix paramater system as the RP-100, -200, etc., but with much sturdier buttons and everything written on the panel itself. I had already owned an RP-100, so this thing was a cinch for me. The only problems were the problems I've run into with almost any unit, like too many EQ options and sometimes redundant functions, but these are so minor, so easily overcome.
Sound Quality

My Epi LP Standard has a GK-2A mounted on it and goes through a guitar synthesizer, which I set up to send the direct guitar signal to whatever effects I want (namely, the GNX1), and directly to the PA. I'll soon be fitting my guitar with the Fernandes sustainer system, so everything will therefore change, and my experience with the GNX1 won't be very useful to most people, so I'll tell you what it's like now, with stock alnico humbucking pickups:
-The clean sound is a magnificent thing when I use the warp feature (which others have explained) to mix an amp type like Blackface or British Combo with some dirtier one like Tweed or Blues. I EQ the really clean side to boost highs and high mids, and the crunchy side boosts the low end and low mid, if necessary. So, when I warp them, they cover the whole range; bear in mind that the end result is still completely clean and free of any distortion, which I prefer, but the notes have more sustain, are warmer, and seem separated better when I use chords. It's also useful to save this mixture, and then warp it again with the acoustic guitar model blended in slightly. Don't go too crazy with the acoustic model, though, as it is very hissy.
-For overdrive/distortion, I've found that there are the basic standouts like Rectifier, Fuzz, and Higain that each have unique characters, and then a whole bunch that sound similar, like Boutique and Modgain, Crunch and Blues, Cleantube and British Combo, and so forth... but these are useful in themselves for slight changes here and there. I like the midrange-heavy amp types most of the time, because I'm after Robert Fripp's sound (yeah, I know, be your own musician, don't copy...hey, I'm only human). I can't seem to get that bone-crushing explosion of sound that's effective here and there just for contrast, though. But that's not final, as there are many, many ways to alter your tone, and I might find it somewhere down the line.
-Finally, the effects...eh, okay. They serve their purpose, but none are exceptional. I was hoping the Whammy would be really good, but it's really impossible to play smooth lines with the pitch bent up an octave (a la Fripp), but I use it anyhow. Triggered Flanger and Triggered Phaser sound exactly like Flanger and Phaser, only much more pronounced. It would take a really good listener to detect the "triggering." Everything else is basically standard, aside from the YaYa (sometimes appropriate for power chords, in my opinion) and the Synthtalk, which is decent for special effects. Good variety!

It's made out of metal, and everything looks sturdy, but there are two niggling issues, one being the sticky third knob and the other one being the footpedal, which doesn't want to stay fully forward. This second problem is annoying especially with Whammy and warping patches, where the extremes (toe, heel) are important. I haven't tried calibrating it yet, so that might do the trick.

It's great for what it does, going straight to the PA along with a guitar synth, providing a copious amount of traditional and trippy options, and a moderate amount of control within patches themselves. It's less than half the price of the VG-88, and let me tell you, it sounds that way. But I'm a poor teenager...and besides, the VG-88 uses an internal guitar signal, it doesn't even utilize your guitar's pickups most of the time (it's another synth-type product). The POD was on my mind, but it had less effects and it wasn't floor-based right outta the box, which I need. J-Station: same deal as the POD. So, all roads leading to Olneyville, this is what I ended up with, and I like it so far.

The reverend sound fantastic with the fender styled setting and i got a great AC/DC rhythm sound with the British Combo. The Asat want's warped amps nice Jerry Donahue clean country twang with Aucostic and Tweed warped. Some very nice distorted sound with most "modern amps" if a warp in just a bit of Blackface headroom. Great to practice with, I use headphones or some cheap PC speakers and have a great portable practice amp. I think i differ from most since im NOT after extreme effect but a way to have good sound even if i don't have access to a good amp and to have a flexible recording tool. For TONE i might get a reverend Hellhound. BUT i will keep this great tool for it's flexability. If I should by all effects it would cost A LOT more.

my set-up=ibanez s-520/470/7-string rg to the gnx1 to a fender princeton chorus 2x10. the unit is fairly quiet.the rotating speaker is a little weak but the rest of the effects work fine. the rectifier amp sim is very good, very easy to get that metallica, megadeth ect. distortion, also with the "warping" feature i have come up with a very respectable vai/satch. sound.

It sounds fantastic, the amp tones are exquisite, I kind of miss actually having tubes in the unit, but it fakes it pretty well for my purposes. The ability to tune your cabinet to a resonant frequency was particularly exiting and the effects all sound great. My only qualm is that you can't turn off the EQ patch (or at least I haven't figured that out yet) it gets annoying to run through an amp tone EQ'd by a cabinet then the cabtune, to the Bass Mid Treble knobs then the Post-amp EQ. I like the option of that much flexibility but it turns out it's not really an option, you just have to tweek and tweek to get the right balance between the EQ's but it's still worth it. I also have trouble balancing the noise gate, but unfortunately, Ive never been good at that.

You could probably throw this thing at a wood chipper and it might scratch the paint a bit. It's a sturdy little unit that you can really depend on. I'v only had one problem with it and that was I programmed an effect that kept switching distortions, spontaneously in the middle of songs I was playing but I worked out the kinks.

I play (and have tones) anywhere from Kirk Hammet and Tony Rombola to The Edge and Ross Childress to BB king, Angus Young and Dusty Hill and these are just 7 of the many more, Id say this is the most versitile unit next to it's counterpart the GNX-2. I've played the guitar for ten years and I didn't even touch an electric untill I was three years into the hobby. My fist amp was a peavy studio chorus amp(solid state) that I traded for a digitech valve effectsand I've been hooked on Digitech ever since. The next unit was the 2112 and that was the best toy I've played with untill I found the GNX-1. The only thing I miss about the 2112 is the ability to have a programmable effects chain. After I sold it, I got used to just playing with my Fender Hot-Rod Deville and a wah pedal and that was it. When I bought the GNX-1, I was so happy to be returnd th the realm of flexible creativity that the programmable effects chain was a thing of the past. Then to top it all off, it had assignable LFO's, and an expression pedal (also fully programmable) with a toe switch for the wah, a first for Digitech. I'm happy with my pedal.

It has less patches than the Pod, but it is great.
It's a nice programable unit. I woned a Digitech RP-10 which had much more parameters to adjust and a less friendlier interface. The knobs work great, and you have less parameters to choose from, so it's easier to program. The GenEdit program is basically the same, although Digitech claims you'll have access to more programable functions this is not true. It would be nice to have included a PanelWare for cakewalk and soner programs.

I own a MArshall Vavlestate V80, a Dunlop Cry Baby, an Ibanez 470 Custom Made and an Epiphone Electric guitar. The unit ain't noise, althoug my old RP-10 got noisy with time. The amp models are OK, the Effects are cool (I believe Digitech is great on this huh?), it's cool to be able to warp different amps or cabinets, I believe the POD won't do the trick. As usual the presets are focused on overexpressing a certain effect so they are actually useless, but with no problem you can dial excellent sounds in no time. Digitech Sound Community needs more time so users will be able to upload more usable patches. The acoustic preset is very noise, although it can be fixed quite easily.

Man it was cool! I just pluged it in and it worked, I read the dam book after my fingers started bleeding. But programing it is pretty involved, playing with the sounds that come on it will take some time, 48 in all with about 1000 variations. So I guess it's easy to start off with but you can make it as hard as you want. I know nothing about this digital stuff, but I can plug in a cord and thats all it took.

This processor is actually pretty easy to use. The parameters are changed by knobs, thank god. With a little common sense, it is easy to create your own sounds. Read the manual anyways. It will help for you to understand some of the cool features (e.g. whammy, warp, cab frequency). However, the expression pedal is extremely stiff at first, which makes it difficult to use the pedal for the sub-par wah or changing parameters. The FX mode is a pretty damn cool idea, seeing as how you can go from clean to distortion easy, and add an effect (e.g. chorus, flange) and delay. However, the fact that by pushing pedal 1 takes you from amp1 to amp2 to warped negates its usefulness for live gigging. And you can't go from amp to amp to amp in this like in the normal mode without reaching down and pressing the tiny arrow buttons next to the exp. pedal.

Let me start out by saying: THIS IS ALL MY PERSONAL OPINION. IF EVERYONE'S TASTES WERE THE SAME, THEN MUSIC WOULDN'T BE THE WONDERFUL GIFT THAT IT IS! Enough philosophy. Like many of you, I'm sure, when I checked this out in the store, I was impressed with some of the cooler features mentioned above. Obviously, the presets sucked horribly, but I bought it, and used it for a couple of gigs before I really sat down with it. At the time, I was still saving up for my new gear, and I needed something for my straigt Peavey 200 watt 2x12 combo and Hamer Explorer. But after I sat down with it, I discovered that most of the sounds I could get out of it sounded, well, digital. Very fake, not TONE at all. See, there is a huge difference between the way something sounds and if it has Tone. You learn how to tell the difference the same way you learn how to tell the difference between a G and an A chord: with time.
I recently acquired my new gear: Gibson '61 SG through a Marshall JCM2000 DSL 100 watt half stack. Crank it up to about 11 in a club the size of your backyard, and that's tone. I ran the GNX straigt into the PA, through headphones, and though my stack, and none of them could compare to the Marshall. I'm not a vintage amp freak, but that's where the tone is. The distortion on my Boss Metal Zone is superior to the processor's. But I will probably keep it for some of the better effects. The effects were pretty good, nothing spectacular. I liked putting on a little rotary speaker. I also like screwing around with the Synth. Also, the fact that you can adjust the cab frequency is very cool. It's a bit noisy, but the noise gate is above-par.The output level is very sensitive, so be careful.
I will say that Digitech did a wonderful job marketing this, with its DNA slogans. However, the warp feature just seems to fade from one amp's dominance to the other's. The wah is very uncool. PURE CRAP. Nothing like a real one, say, Crybaby or Vox. The distortions and overdrives are very thin, and neither both of the eq's really help that much. They just sound, fake. But, you can get a wide variety of sounds, so if you're in a cover band, or if you don't care about Tone, no offense, this might work very well for you.

I play original music, mostly hard rock, Doorsy type shit, grunge, solos, and some metal. (GO HET!!!) I've been playing for several years, and if it was stolen, I'd collect the insurance and save for a Tele or a Triaxis. It just feels uninspired.
That said, I gonna tell you two little stories. (This is for those who are serious about making it in the music industry, which is cruel as hell) And the little stories go that one of my friend's band had a meeting with a record executive to get him to listen to their rather cool demo. They played it for him, and he told them: "What is this shit? You're wasting my fucking time. It sounds like everybody else! I could hire some guys off the street who could sound just as good. Get the fuck out of my office!!!" So, to really make it, you've got to be original, give the listener something that they haven't gotten before, unless of course you are Lenny Kravitz or Aerosmith.
The second little story goes that my other friend met Carlos Santana, and he had him play through his gear. After he left, he went and played the exact same notes, but it wasn't the same. It's in the hands. It begins and ends in the hands. So instead of wondering which new effect to buy, go practice and write some songs! Remember, your gear is only as good as YOU are!!!

i used to run it through my crate gfx-65 in a preamp kind of configuration (Guitar --> GNX1 --> Amp). all the effects were cool and the signal is kept decently, but not exceptionally.
complaints:
I just recieved my 100W Carvin Legacy half stack today and hooked my GNX1 through the FX loop. i have done some research on the fx loop and learned that its purpose to place effects AFTER your guitar signal has been processed by the amp eq and distortion. when you plug this thing into your input jack and turn on the distortion on your amp, you distort whatever effects are coming out of the GNX1, as opposed to an effects loop which ensures that you put your effects on top of your amp tone. this is hard for some people to understand, but there is a significant difference between delay that is distorted, and distortion with delay. this is one of the most interesting things i've found about effects in general.
im having some major trouble getting my GNX1 to work in the effects loop of the Legacy though, it feeds back and sounds like crap when you increase the output volume on the GNX1 to about three o clock. im gonna take it to guitar center tomorrow to see if theres anything i can do to imporove the situation.

It's easy to use at home or studio, but on stage you're screwed.
Any last second editing will cause a lot of stress, there are
only 3 presets to use at a time and you can only scroll up and
there's no way back except to press the little preset-knob using
your finger..
Editing goes quit alright, the annoying thing is the indicator that
moves from left to right and doesn't stay at the parameter you want to edit.
As soon as you twist the knob of the parameter you want to alter
it doesn't start at the original setting, so you have to remember that
before making any changes...

I've tried both versions of the Pod, various Line 6 amps(original version + Flextones models), the Johnson Millenium, the Yamaha modeling amp, the Yamaha Stomp pedal, the Cybertwin, and a few of the previous model DigiTech stomp boxes. Many produced at least a few tones which sounded really cool at the beginning and middle of the notes played, but some ended with that hard to define harsh/unmusical "digital thing/frequency/annoying sound."
Then I read the glowing review (in no uncertain terms) in Guitar Player regarding the GNX1- - an "Editor's Choice," the holy grail ????
I tried the GNX1 out in a fairly quite guitar shop with the same guitar I often use - an American strat with a humbucker in the bridge position. I tried it both plugged line-in to a PA/Keyboard type amp, and plugged straightin to a Fender Blues Deluxe. The Deluxe sounded warmer than the PA route, but, to me it still wasn't quite "get there." I heard some nice effects, and some nice clean and distorted tone ideas, BUT, the sound seemed "boxed in," and very compressed -especially the hot rod distortion Marshallesque/boogie tones. I can only describe it as what I might expect to hear if I heard a good-sounding Marshall or Boogie played through a cabinet loaded with
4 x 6" inch speakers.
I tried most of the settings, and REALLY LISTENED - - at times with my ear very close to the amp. Then, I unplugged the pedal, and just plugged the guitar straight into the Fender Deluxe. All of a sudden, the once two-dimensional, hard to describe sound opened up (like it had been freed from the box) and became three dimensional and "musical" again. It wasn't so much that the GNX1 sounded terrible; to the contrary, there were some great ideas - - but tone IDEAS is really what is involved. Many of the GNX1 tones were ultimately unnatural sounding to me after I got over the initial "that's kinda cool" response to the many tones that sounded good at first. Kinda like going out with someone who appears very nice and intelligent at first, and then after a few conversations you find that they are pretty shallow.
Don't get me wrong, I am NOT a vintage tube/amp freak. I have a digital recording set up (though I'm always trying to use tricks to warm up and fatten the sound to make it sound analog . . . !!!. And I truly hope that one of these days they'll get these "modelers" to really do the job right, because I'm damn tired of hauling all of my pre-amps/effects/racks around. If I was playing in a jack-of-all trades cover/bar band, and if a really good tone was not necessary, I might consider it. Otherwise, while the GNX1 is one of the best digital modeling things I've encountered thus far,the fact remains that (IMHO)it remains a digital modeling thing.
It's too bad that we've had to endure the digital hype so extensively before they really got it down. One problem,it seems, is that at least some of the larger, guitar-related music manufacturers are so caught up in the digital hype, that they no longer seem to place sufficient emphasis on new product design and development of good, solid sounding analog equipment. Instead, like a bunch of tom-cats chasing their tails, they get themselves wrapped up in each other and each others digital hype, spending large sums of money on digital product development, and then forcing the stores to sell, and the guitar mags to legitimize this stuff like as if it was mannah from heaven - which it ain't, at least not to me.
CD's were manufactured with the McDonald's theory and hype, efficiency - not overall quality. As one restraunt owner said once,
"Give 'em crap, they'll eat it . . . " Presently, digital ain't it soundwise - - -except for the incredible convenience factor. If you digital folks are really honest, you know this is true. If you doubt it, take an acoustic guitar with a decent mic and record it direct to one channel of a good ole' fas

Pretty easy to access all the features from the matrix. Although when adjusting parameters the LED is positioned so your hand gets in the way. Since there are two simultaneous amp models in one patch, it can be a bit awkward the way Digitech have you flicking between the two. Also, one wrong move on the amp model control and bam - lost a lot of your configuration as it reverts back to its default for the amp. Editing effects is fine, but editing the amp models doesnt seem very intuitive.

To validate my review I will give you some background details:
I am a IT engineer (no stranger to complicated equipment) and home recordist with some decent equipment (PC, synths, samplers, 24/98K recording setup). Been playing guitar 10 years as primary instrument. I use a Marshall EL34 20/20 poweramp (into 1x12 marshall cabs), Line6 AX2. Have previously owned GX700, VF1, Digitechs, Zooms, Marshall amps, pedals...
On paper this thing has every feature to construct many brilliant varied guitar sounds. I have spent a good solid 8+ hours for the past 3 evenings purely tweaking/AB'ing and programming this board. Out of the 16 or so models, it seems there are three or so unique distortion types - fuzz (fuzz model), and MEGABASS distortion (rectifier model), regular od (all the others). Not much variation between models. The overall sound of this unit is extremely bass oriented. I tried it through the valve poweramp, AX2 poweramp, direct recording with all "target" settings and it still sounded extremely bass/low mid heavy. It seems Digitech have gone for that cheap hi-fi like MEGABASS to give a fake powerful tone! It does not respond well to cutting the bass or low mids on eq or amp model to clear this up. Listen, as the immediacy and midrange/presence just disappears. Add some treble back and its harsh and shrill. Its hard to believe that you cant get a good balanced distortion tone as the GNX1 and 2 has both amp-model-EQ and post-EQ's!
On a plus side the unit is very quiet. Effects are nice and clear. Clean sounds again lack midrange/presence but are quite nice, at least not so bassy as the rattle your jaw as in the distortion models.
Whammy feature is an excellent toy and will doubtlessly sell bucket loads of these things in the excitement of the novelty whilst playing in the guitar store. As will that MEGABASS fake "rectifier" distortion - the guitarist who wants to sound like Y2K metal bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit... will declare this is the best thing on the planet after 1 powerchord.

I believed all the hype and hoped this would allow me move onto the next generation of amp modelling, sell my Line6 AX2, and just run the GNX1 with my poweramp and speakers. Not so. I enjoy heavy/alternative music from all decades and whether playing Rammstein, 80's metal or 70's blues demand an authentic *real* guitar tone. The distortions on the GNX1 sound cheap and fake. If programmed correctly the Boss GX700 and GT5 can be much superior. Even without the help of a valve powerstage the AX2 wipes the floor with it. I am so glad I didnt wait to get the GNX2.
The GNX1 is going back to the shop today and I'll have to try the Pod2 as I cannot get a cash refund. But with the POD I'll need another outboard unit that has post eq... aggghhhh!
I'm also in the second hand market for a Marshall JMP1 and Rocktron Voodu Valve.

Using this for direct recording (Roland VS880) and have used it live through 2 Marshall combos (input) and also straight to PA. I'm thrilled with the sound quality. Sure it might not sound like uncle Joe's '67 Fender twin reverb in isolation - but in a real setting, with a band, It does the business. If you're ego can't handle it you could put a cardboard cut out of the Twin on stage and no-one would know. My one complaint about the unit (so far) is the short cut out when you change between patches - only milliseconds but enough to annoy me as I know have to change patches just before the beat rather than right on. I'll get used to it.

I play a FAT-Stratocaster with a Marshall AVT20 but I use GNX mostly direct.
Presets are useless (I never like the idea of having 'ready' sounds. I prefer to start from scratch).
Some amp models are quite usefull (Rectifier,Marshalls) others sound poor (Hi-watt for example). Fenders (Tweed,Blackface,Bassman) seem very similar to my ears. Generally as far as modelling is concerned I haven't been amazed by the unit but I'll give it more time. It definetely needs a LOT of tweaking to get good sounds. The Warp function seems to be a simple 'crossfade' despite Digitech claims it is not. It works better with similar amps (warping JCM900 with Rectifier is quite impressive) rather than blending clean with hi-gain sounds. Cabinet tuning is very useful and effective.
My Marshall AVT20 sounds a bit 'dark' with the GNX even if I played-around with the 'target system' quite extensively. So for me its much better if I go direct to my PC/Stereo. Most of FX are good but I would be surprised if I used more than 5-6 of them.
The noise gate does a really good job.

I absolutely love it! This thing can produce just about any sound desired. I looked at the POD but did not like the idea of purchasing the pedals separately. I have not found any sites that have downloadable patches for the GNX-1 yet, I have just been following the RP-2000 settings people have. I have it connected to my computer and can just tweak the effects on the screen and hear them thru my amp that very second. That is just too sweet. I am playing thru a Crate 1/2 stack and it kicks.

If anyone knows of a site that has setups or downloadable patches, please email me. I can always tweak my sound. Thx

I'm using a fender 60's strat w/custom shop Fat 50's. I currently use a PA when playing live instead of my Laney LC-50 (it just sounds better that way). I've owned a few guitar processors: Kord G3, Digitech GSP 21 Legend, Boss GX-700, Rocktron Voodoo Valve, Korg AX-1000, POD. I bought the POD from musician's friend and gave it a good 3 weeks. It sounded great through headphones, but when I went to play live, I could not get a good sound out of it. Plus if I wanted to add pedals it would cost me almost $300.00. I heard good reviews on the gnx1 so I traded the POD in and added $10.00 and I got a whole lot more for the money. The amps are great especially when you take time to tweek. I love the whammy it sound pretty close to the original (I've owned one) I love the boutique Wah it sounds very good. All the Effects sound great. The main thing is when I plugged this thing in live it sounded great! Great crunches and sparkling clean sounds. All the effects are very clean and usable (except the Ya Ya can't find a use other than just messing around with it) I've very happy with the sound of the GNX1

The GNX1 has a metal chassis that will take a good beating on the road. The only thing that might make me want a backup would be the power supply connection, just in case you stepped on it and snapped it off. A slim chance, but could happen.

Digitech seems to have always gone over the top with their service.
I have not yet taken this unit in for repair, it does not need it.
I did have an original whammy that had the selector knob break off. I emailed digitech and asked if they made a replacement knob and they sent me one free of Charge! They had a vintage new old stock knob and they did not even charge me for it. Wow! so far my dealing with them has been great!

This unit really is a great unit for playing live through a PA. I have a Laney LC-50. This is a 50 watt all tube combo. The GNX1 just did not seem to like this particular amp. This amp is British and very Voxy in nature so it would probably sound great with a really clean Fender. Overall the gnx1 sounds great. I've been able to dial in any sound that I've desired within no time at all. If I had an additional 100.00 I would have got the GNX2. It has 10 stompboxes that have been modeled nicley. It would be nice to have some distortion options other than just amp distortions. So If you can afford and extra hundred bucks, get the GNX2 and you'll be doubly happy. However I am very happy with my purchase and will not look any further for guitar processor (unless I hear something better of course:)

The unit is easy to use but two or three buttons and LED's more would help. The manual is very good, the firmeware is 1.0.
Editing is o.k., the bigger models GNX2 + GNX3 have a lot of more knobs and would be easier to edit, but therefore this unit is not so big and has a komfortable size.

I use it with different guitars (Paula, Tele, Strat) and mostly direct into the PA. Sometimes I use it in front of my halfstack. The target system, which allows you diffent outputsounds (line, guitaramp-input, guitaramp-fx, diffent cabinets) is very nice. My Johnson J-Station sounds terrible in Front of my halfstack because it's an old one and has no fx-return.
When I first heard my new GNX1 I was a little bit disapointed, but then I tried some editing and found out that the presets are not my taste. Don't know what they programed, but the presets do not sound like real amps. (my test-equipment are Genelec and JBL Studiomonitors and different headphones). Making own sounds let the sun shine and specially the rectifier, fender and the '78 Marshall (with 4x12" greenback-cabinet) sound great!
So I decited to use my J-Station at home and the GNX1 for live, because it needs no external pedal-board and can be used with my acoustic-guitar too, because it has a real bypass for the modelling. The mixer of our band is very happy, because he just gets one left and right signal for all, electric and acoustic guitars. I'm happy too, because I only need to carry one unit and it has a great sound.

I just love it. The genetic warping feature is my favorite. You can really hear the tonal qualities of one amp morph into the other. I wish I knew how they did it because it is hard to explain unless you hear it. You would think it is just a cross-fade from one to the other, but it isn't. It really sounds like one amp changing into another. Overall, it is a kickin' box. You should get one.

This is another "do-it-all in a box" offering from digitech. As far as multi-effect boxes go this one isn't that hard to figure. Out of the box, you will be pleased by a bunch of cool presets that are ready for editing. While in the past editing patches has been a lot of "hold this button for three seconds and tap this one etc..", Digitech has come a long way to make things simple. One really nice feature is the ability to use all three "stomp-pads" on a patch at one time. One changes clean-dirty amp, two is effect on/off, and three is delay on/off. This feature makes it very feasible to use in a live situation.

I have played with just about all of the new amp-sims that are out now and this product ranks in the top 3. Some very convincing models, ecspecially the dirty ones. Digitech has been promoting the GNX1 as having "Audio DNA" and the ability to "warp" between models. What I have figured from this advertising scheme is that you can blend two presets together using the expression pedal. This is a cool feature, but hardly genetic. As far as what I used (unlike those who love to list every peice of gear they ever owned) I plugged a Les Paul and a Strat into it, with headphones, direct into computer, and through two amps (marshall/small tube combo). The Les Paul sounded a little muddy compared to the Strat on most pre's. It seems like the pre's are more "single coil-ready" than humbucker, so you Paul users will find yourselfs doing some tweaking. Another nice touch is the ability to assign what type of output you're using (phones, amps). All-in-all: not the real thing or genetic, but very nice models and easy to get a pretty sound out of it.

I would also give it a shot in my studio, I think that it would make some interesting tracks. I would be extremely hesitant to bring it on the road unless you are a good programmer and have a flight case to stow it in.

I have an ESP Ltd M-300 into a Boss DS-1 (Feedback alot easier/controllable) into GNX-1 into Dano Fish & Chips EQ (for boosting solos) into Crate Blue Voodoo 60 112 combo. The only thing that is a little noisy is the Acoustic Sim. Just adjust the noise gate. You can get any distortion you want from this, any clean sound too. Metal heads check out this pedal, it has some sweet metal tones (Rectifier). Blues tone is sweet, Tweed or Vox. Thick Hard Rock distortion comes from warping Boogies with Marshalls. Sparkling Blackface cleans. Acoustic sim sounds better than Boss. Whammy, nice Wah modeling, Chorus gets pretty sweet, VERY VERSATILE.

I am using this mainly for direct recording. I have a variety of guitars, gibson, parker, fender, etc. This thing sounds great. I have never been happy with any of the amp simulators on the market. Though some have great effects and distortion, the cabinet simulation was not realistic and often boomy. The GNX1 is really great, it has very realistic cabinet simulations and provides the ability to tune the resonant frequency of the cab model as well. The distortions/amp sims are great, better yet you can tweak them, combine them and then store them as a new amp sim. With a little bit of tweaking you can definately find what ever sound you want. This is the first product of its kind I have been totally satisfied with for direct recording use. It is a killer product at a killer price for what it does.

version 1.2. The unit is not hard to edit, once you are familiar with the modes of operation. The manual has a nice tutorial that helps a ton. They have it on their website, so check it out there. In terms of getting a good sound out of it, it is very easy to get the best sounds it will get. You may or may not love the tone, but its easy to put its through its paces.
It features knobs for changing settings, but they are small and appear to be analog. I'd fully expect that this will become erratic in the future and make it hard to use, but I can't say for sure.

I was using this with an Ibanez S540 guitar with humbuckers and either direct to PA or into my homebrew tube amp head with a 412 cabinet. The unit has "target system" settings, which everyone mentions, and it helps you to adjust its overall tonality for the intended application. The 'direct' setting is decent and not washed out like a lot of these things. I couldn't get it to duplicate the direct sound when plugged straight into my amp with any setting of the target system, which is to be expected, I suppose.
As with all units of this type, I suspect the presets leave something to be desired. I rolled through them and found about 5 interesting ones out of 48, but there seems to be a good crosssection of examples. This unit generates plenty of hash which a loud amp picks up, making the noisegate necessary. I'm not wild about noisegates, but this one works acceptably. It doesn't seem to work as seemlessly as the HUSH on my Piranha preamp does, however.
I'm not a huge fan of effects these days, but those included with the unit were satisfying. Pitch shift seems sluggish, but you wouldn't expect this to compete with an eventide. Some of the presets have real nice rotary speaker effects as well as great ambiant reverb. These work best in stereo, however.
The tones of the unit are very nice for direct use. I suspect this unit would work great for recording. Playing live without all the effects, the unit sounds funny. There is no way I'd mistake this for an amp, but its hard to explain why. With that said, the tone isn't terrible, and probably better than I expected. The dirty tones clean up with the volume knob as expected, which was a surprise. Its better in every regard than the RP1 and GSP-21 Legend I used to have. It competes favorably with the Chameleon 2000, but its not superior in my opinion (for raw tone)
The warp control works great for getting 'in between' tones. I wanted to get this so I could use the expression pedal to warp between clean(ish) tones and distorted tones, which you can do. It seems to work better for the latter purpose if the two tones you are warping between are somewhat similar tonally. You *can* go clean to solo with this, and it works well.
I'll give this a 8 for sound quality, but only because someone wanting this is already agreeing to compromise the tone a little bit in order to get flexibility. If you were purely concerned with tone alone, this score might be as low as 6. If it wasn't as noisy as it is, I'd give it a 9, but its not noisier than other units of its type.
Reliability
:
No Opinion
The chassis is metal, which is a good sign. The pedals are plastic, which is probably still OK. I don't like the AC input on the unit since it uses a wall-wart. I expect that it will develop a faulty connection with much use. I will give them bonus points for using a standard wall wart, however. At least you don't have to pay them $50 when yours dies. My other digitech gear lasted good, but I can't rate this for reliability. I'd never gig without some kind of backup plan.

Using this with a guitar amp is missing most of its tone. Run it direct for the best tone. While running it through an amp might be acceptible thanks to the 'target system' control, its nowhere near as cool as running it through a fullrange system.
I'm been playing rock guitar since 1987. I was playing hair band stuff back then, classic rock after and "post-1980" rock now. I'm afraid that the unit is not a terribly good match for me because it doesn't sound like an amp, which is something that I'm really getting into since I've been building my own (www.ax84.com).
I've sold most of my stuff, but I've owned all sorts of amps and effects: Rocktron Piranha(great), Peavey Rockmaster(nice) (both with tube and SS power amps), Rocktron Chameleon (like this), Sansamp PSA-1(like this), Digitech RP1(crap), GSP-21 Legend(crap), Crate Blue Voodoo(crap), Marshall JTM combo (some kind of recent crap with solid state distortion masquarading as a tube amp), as well as my homebrew amps. This would compete favorably with any digital preamp, as far as I'm concerned. One thing to note, the Chameleon while not a modelling preamp can do all of these tones with equal ease. Modelling still appears to be a marketing buzzword.
If you wanted to just run direct and carry this in your bag or a small case, it would be great and your back would thank you. Hopefully your back could talk to your ears and have them stop whispering "this isn't exactly perfect" :)
I'm rating this based on the idea of how this compares to units of its type. Obviously, its not right for everyone, but some will think its a gem! I'm pulling a point back for the high price.

I bought it for my studio and can already tell it is going to be well used. It has excellent specs and sounds great. Often guitar players will come in my studio with broken effects or amps. In a rage of panic they'll usually fly off the handle and become suicidal. The GNX1 is literally a lifesaver. Once a client calms down, I can usually ask a few questions about their sound and recreate it on the GNX1. Everyone goes away happy. I've also used it in place of a client's POD because the sampling rate sounds better on the GNX1. I'm not sure what it is on the POD, but since they don't publish it anywhere, it must not be good. Back to the GNX1, it sounds great and is capable of just about anything. Now, if I can just get it to wash my dishes!

I've used BOSS and other manufacturer stompboxes in pedalboard setups and have never used any type of all-in-one guitar processor before. I have been playing for 25 years, but haven't played like I used to for many years, and only now for personal enjoyment. Please keep that in mind while reading my review. I found the GNX-1 to be very easy to start using. To get the maximum benefit from it, though, I found the 68-page manual very helpful and necessary. The manual is very straightforward. I like that DigiTech provides the manual in pdf format on their Web site. I went through it before making the purchase, and went over the manuals of the GNX1 and RP2000 before purchase to make my decision. Editing patches is very easy. I like the fact that it has a chart right under the knobs for editing the effect parameters (I love that it uses knobs-coming from a stompbox background). I'm not overly crazy about the tiny size of the buttons in the upper right corner of the unit (just left of the expression pedal). I also find it a hassle to go into "tuner" mode. I want to lose my balance when having to press the two footswitches simultaneously. Maybe it's designed to hit both footswitches with one foot, but I am not able to do that (my foot size).

I have used my GNX1 with my Les Paul (with PAF pickups) and 80s Fender Elite Stratocaster. I play it thorugh an '80s Music Man 112RD 50-watt combo amp. I haven't found the unit to be noisey, but I tend to keep the noise gate on. I am definitely no expert on noise gates (only having used a DOD one before that was crappy), but the one in the GNX1 rocks in my opinion. My amp has become a tad noisey in its old age (had to completely pull out the spring reverb unit due to problems) and the GNX1. I am quite pleased with all the effects. I was hoping (probably stupidly) that it's built-in "intelligent pitch shifter" would allow me to detune down 1/2 or a full step, but it doesn't seem to allow that. I used to have a t.c. Electronic Stereo Chorus/Flanger and a vintage analog Ibanez Stereo Chorus. The GNX1 no where compares with the t.c. electronic (in my opinion), but it's definitely equal or exceeds my impressions on the Ibanez. I am very pleased with the GNX1's phaser, reverb, delay, wah, noise gate and compressor capabilities. The amp/cabinet choices are great (although I haven't played through all these amp/cabinet types, so I'm not sure how dead-on some of them are to the true thing) and the warp feature allows a great deal of customization. I wish I had a bit more ability to increase the volume even more of the cleaner amps so when I hit the amp footswitch during a song to switch between amp modes the cleaner amp setting (i.e. tweed, etc.) could equal the volume level of other amp settings - even with their volume and gain settings turned way down. Maybe there's something I haven't discovered yet. For the pitch shifter, the tracking seems a bit sluggish. The rhythm player is great to have built-in, but the 30 patterns don't have the quality that a good drum machine has (but realistically, I don't think it's fair to expect it to be compared to a drum machine). The tuner is okay. It's not as accurate as my BOSS TU-12 is though. I haven't used the Learn-a-Lick feature yet.

The unit is metal and seems to be incredibly sturdy. The expression pedal and footswitches don't appear to be as sturdy as the remainder of the case, but they seem sturdy enough. I'm a home guitarist not a performer, but I think for those that can't afford the cost or transportation hassle of a backup unit, this would be a reliable choice.

I would, though first try out a GNX2 or any other new-to-market units to see if there's anything better. But I am incredibly happy with the GNX1 to date. I compared this unit to Digitech's RP2000, the GNX2 (which is a tad out of my price range and wasn't available yet when I bought the GNX1) and a couple other manufacturer's units. This one seemed to have everything I wanted and then some.

Let me start off saying how much I hate effects. They really suck. My lead guitarist has a DOD processor, and he is always fucking with it. So when I realized how crappy my amp was sounding, I knew I needed something. I was gonna go with a few Boss stompboxes (mt-2, ge-7), but during a daily pass in my neighborhood Tarpley's, a friend of mine showed me this pedal. I thought it was actually quite cool. I got this pedal the day before a big gig, and withing 10 minutes, I was getting a badass Marshall combined with a Mesa sound. With a little common sense, everything is self-explanatory.

As I said before, I had a nasty sounding amp. A Peavy 200 watt 2x12 special; my friend likes it. I plugged into this pedal, however, and I was blown away. As a metalhead, I went straight to the rectifier. But after fucking with it for a while, I read up on the warp feature. Now, a few days later, I have combined a Rectifier with the Marshall Master Volume, a compressor, club/arena reverb, and a big piece of badass. You can get any sound you want out of this baby. An old Fender Twin combined with a JCM-900 (I'm a Marshall man), no problem. The vast array of effects and the different functions of the expression pedal (volume, whammy, wah, talk box/yaya, tunings, ect.) make this even more badass. If you're a wannabe Metallica freak, Eric Johnson fan, Tim McGraw lover, the next Hendrix, or some crazy dude trying to make it in the music world, this will do your thing. It will do it well. Did I mention the whole create-your-own-amp/warp feature kicks ass. I've got every Metallica album's sound saved. Hella!

I like to play musica latina and it is very good for that. Because I have another digitech RP10, I would not look for anything except digitech. For me the sound is very good. I still have not used the warp effect very much because it is a good sound and i need to learn how it is working. I also like to use the drum effect to practice because i do not have a drummer in my house to practice with.

I'm new to the area of effects, and this is very easy to use. I've been able to create my own presets and amp models without even reading the manual. After reading the manual, it is even easier to use!

I called before buying the GNX1 to find more about it, and the tech support guys were very helpful in explaining what it does. They also helped me understand what it does, that other products don't.

I've been shopping around for a few months and haven't been satisfied with the limited capabilities of other products out there (POD, Korg, Boss). This is the best value on the guitar market today. I want everyone to know that you can actually create your own amp models with this product. Digitech has really thought outside of the box. Plus, I was glad to hear the history of Digitech. It seems like they've been innovating the guitar effects market for decades. (Unlike other newcomers, who will probably be gone tomorrow). I'm going to dump my boyfriend unless he gets rid of his POD. The GNX1 really opens up a whole new world for creating music. If you're looking for a new & unique sound, you can do it with the GNX1.

The ease of this unit is remarkable. At the initial plug-in of the unit you are able to acheive an extraordinary sound. The presets are disigned by musicians who undoubtedly have very sharp ears. The manual is quite comprehensive, explaining all the new principles in a clear manner.

The beauty of this item is the "target system" setting. It allows you to set it up according to the type of gear you are using. That way, instead of merely plastering more sound on top of your old cabinet tone, it allows you to virtually remove your natural cabinet frequencies, thereby providing a clean state with which you can create your own "Hypermodels", or custom amps.

The construction seems to be of good material. I give it a nine only because I still have not had it too long, and am leary to place to much confidence in untried waters.

Although my GNX-1 has required no technical attention, my prior dealings with the digitech company have been remarkable. They have a very knowledgeable customer support staff. One time, when I had a question regaurding my 2120 of which they did not know the answer, they transfered me to one of the guys that helped designed the unit! They dont get more knowledgable than that!

I have been playing a number of years, and have been rather picky when it comes to effects. This item blows them all away.

DUDE. it is sweet. there is nothing else that sounds this cool. i got to use it with my marshall stack and direct into the band PA. this is the first unit i've found that knows what to do with both setups. you just set up the "target system" for either direct, or fx input, or instrument input on the amp. no worries about preamp ganging.

ofcourse i have only had this a few days, but seems very good and reliable. metal box, wah pedal, plastic foot switches but they seem very strong.

i've played in bands since high school and have tried lots of setups. mostly we play metal, but also classic rock and stuff. the gnx1 is so cool it can do anything. the amp warping will blow you away. i now have created my own amplifier which is kind of like my marshall, but with a hint of tweed and a little fuzz. sounds like a mess, but it is blended perfectly. you gotta try this thing. no matter what kind of music you like to play.
