I find it interesting that those who rate this product poorly in sound also rate it as very hard to use. I think we have a correlation here. If you can't figure out how to use it it's pretty unlikely that you will be able to get a decent sound out of it since the presets are worthless.
It is fairly complicated to learn in depth because it does a great many things. If you aren't willing to put in some time buy something simpler. If you are then you can get some amazing results.

The presets suck, plain and simple. I could not find a single one that was worth using out of the box. I had an RP-1 a decade ago when I decided to move from stomp boxes to multi effects, then an RP-20 before buying the GNX4. I have never used a standard Digitech preset on any of them. It seems Digitech's philosophy in creating them is to demo the various effects rather than make useful sounds. This is fine by me as I have developoed some pretty picky tastes after 30 years of playing and would change them regardless.
When you really get comfortable programming this machine you can get almost any sound you want. The pickup simulator is great at getting my '69 LP deluxe to sound like a Strat for SRV and Jimi stuff. I have gotten some good sounds for Ozzy, VH, and Zep, too. I look forward to getting some presets made for my Ovation doubleneck as well. It will be a while before I get everything I want out of it but I am quite confident it is there.

As I mentioned above I have had an RP-1 and RP-20 bofore this. They lived through hundreds of gigs without a problem. I have no reason to believe this one won't do the same.

I play mostly blues and classic (hard) rock with a little jazz and acoustic thrown in. I have been playing for around 30 years.
So far it exceeds my expectations. I bought it mostly for the onboard recording capabilities. I have been doing PC recording since Cakewalk first introduced their Pro Audio product but a PC isn't easy to take on the road. I used to have a Fostex x-15 4 track for portable riff recording but it bit the dust and I wanted a replacement. The GNX does what I want in that area.
What I also got was the capability of getting great sounds without hooking up my amps. This was not expected and a pleasant surprise.

With a Strat or Les Paul, killer tone can be had with this unit. You just have to be patient and learn how to tweak it. I get great SRV tones with the Strat, and humbuckers will take you to Gary Moore land. Check the website for some great patches. The effects and recorder are awesome once you learn how to use them. People who trashed this thing in their reviews did not take the time to learn how to tweak it.

Hey i spent hours reading reveiws, forums, comments, userguides, and anything else i could find on this product. I spend 3 weeks (at least 14 hours) looking up stuff. I also have owned a RP400. but when i got it, i was had no clue what to do, i got the drum machine working and the preset thing, but most evaded me. I bought it anyway first day wasn't so excitind, but now its awsome. i can do so much!
My opinion and general consesus is that this product may be a bit imtimidating but read the manual and its easy!

Once again, most people agree that the preset suck. they arn't that horid but they load it up too much at time. If your not looking to customize get something else, but for anyone who is willing to spend 5 minutes to tweek or create, you won't find a better one!
A problem which i think most people who have posted the ones, for sound is probably cause of their amp. Not saying the amp is bad, but most likely your mixing tones, anyhow the point being is that you have too change your eq, and get a flat tone from the amp. or you could disable amp modeling and cabinets to get your amp sound. Go on the forums and they help you.
YOU MUST GET HEADPHONES. it soundsss sooo sweet!! my tube amp sounded decent on it, and the Marshal Stack sounded better, but you need some good headphones, it blows me away.
using amps on this sometimes doesn't work too well because of the mixing amps, it still sunds awsome but there is more potential to unlock, you could also get some GOOD speakers to get it sounding this sweet.

Yeah its reliable, and generally the only complaint is for the plastic knobs which might break. Also i came across someone who commented its hard to play in bright light as you cannot see the display. but all electronic pedals are like that eh?

its awsome, a bit steep but i'm willing to play for it, it has crazy effects, a great amp modler, Awsome drum machine! and the best acustic sim ever! (also has bass models which rock)
if you can afford it. buy it! but don' get rid of it when you cant understand everything the first day. if i unloacked everything the first day, i would be disappointed. i pay 700 bucks there better be enough bells and whistles to confuse me for a few weeks!I
If you have any question email me! plese do

This product is amazing, very easy to use and I can't believe that most of the reviews are negative. This pedal is fantastic for metal and very easy to modify your presets.

I'm using a line 6 spider 210. You don't really need a gnx4 with this amp but it makes your sound so much better. The effects are amazing and I've been able to get metallica distortion (Black Album)
Anyone who can't do this doesn't understand this workstation. Alot of people who have negative comments about the pedal have only had it for a day or so and I believe that there opinion is extremely bias. It takes about a year to learn this pedal inside outso start readind the manual before you judge. The only problem is that the rectified preset has way to much treble, you really have to take the time to get the sound you like!!!!!

Very reliable, I've already done three shows with this pedal and my sound is juice. What's really fascinating is that you can have 5 different channels to chose from but the downer is that those 5 channels have to be within the gnx4 preset banks.

I never had to get it repaired but the x-edit program gave me some problems and screwed up my computer but that's my fault, I didn't read the caution warnings in the manual, so a note to everyone, read it will help!!!!!!

I play a weird blend of death/progressive/thrash metal, along the lines of Children of Bodom and Lamb of God. The pedal is fantastic for this style of music. It is also amazing for Classical which I play alot, like Bach and Paganini. I've been playing for about 10 years; but seriously playing for 6 years, in the sense of playing disciplined guitar. If it were stolen or lost I would wait to get a newer model of the gnx. I love the IPS on the pedal as well as the delay options. I hate the fact that the presets are set in banks that you can't move around, ex. preset: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (This is gnx set up) but I would like ex. preset: 26, 51, 55, 79, 80. Line 6 has a great variety of amazing pedals but I've always used digitech and it's easy and very convenient. I wish it had a larger amount of drums patterns that change frquently rather than always keeping the same beat. It is amazing for creating music, every preset has something to offer.

i have had my GNX4 for 1 1/2 years now and it is very easy to use now. Not that it took me that long to learn, I just know it inside and out. Now obviously there are people out there who really know how to tweak this thing really well. Very easy to get a killer tone out of it. I run it into the effects returns into the various amps(tube, and solid state) that I own and it just amazes me every time. I borrowed a disc from a friend of mine that was ordered from mfx supermodels and wow! They sound great! I get really killer tones that just blow people away every time I play. So many amps to choose from and they sound like the real thing. Fully tweakable like the real amps. The amp models are accurate to a tee. I cannot tell the difference between my cranked tube amps( marshall, Peavey, Boogie, Fender etc...I own many amps-god bless e-bay!) from some of the modeled amps. still firmware 1

I have a ton of amps now that I use with it. Music man and peavey guitars. Ampeg, fender , marshall, 5150,Boogie, and a few others. I use them as power amps for this thing. It's guitar heaven. All effects still sound good to me after all this time. the speaker and poweramp combination is very important just as it is with other preamps that are out there. Its basically a super modded preamp with all the bells and whistles. I find myself not using that many effects to better get the feel of a real amp situation. Just guitar cord and straight dry tone, the best way to play in my opinion. no effects to hide behind. Kind of forces you to play better. If you are always wishing you had every amp you have ever heard or wish you had kept every amp you have ever owned(like the rest of us gearheads) then get one of these and a few of those discs and you will be satisfied for quite some time. I have cured my tube snob freinds for life even though I still own them. Nice to have both. All in all the GNX4 is a fabulous machine. I have heard rumors of a newer more advanced version on the horizon(GNX5?) so we will see how that will sound.

Great unit. I play blues, Metal- old and the newer extreme "nu metal". hard rock( Zep, EVH, etc..) and most guitar based rock and music in general. The unit will do it all. And you can record as well. I have made many a disc and other players and the general public all think they sound great. Learn how to play and have a ball with this unit. You just cant stop playing once you turn it on.

The folks at Digitech did a really good job at providing GOOD documentation for the unit. There's lots of it, too. The GNX4 takes a little while to grasp ALL of its features/capabilites (and there ARE lots of them.
The hands-free recording feature is really incredible especially through the PC with Pro Tracks. I say that because, for ex., using Cubase is a pain in the ass to set up to record one track. This thing does it in a second. Recording to the onboard recorder is extremely easy. I am using the GNXFC extra foot switch, BTW.

I don't know where some people are coming off saying the sound quality isn't there. I found good results even with the presets. I don't use any heavily distorted stuff, though, so I can't speak to that. I mean, I was just p*ssing around with one random preset (Mo Slide) and got excellent tone from it using a PRS Santana.

I was looking for a unit that would allow me to record easily and the GNX4 foots the bill. I had a GNX3 at one time and a scaled back Digitech multi-effects pedal (RP-something) as well. I remember getting some interesting sounds from both the units and had used them for recording in the past.
There's a fair amount of capability in this thing from the USB connect feature, the excellent drum machine, the myriad of I/O options (only thing missing is a digital I/O), the routing flexibility, the expression pedal features, the additional footswitch option, the Pro Tracks, et al software, the excellent effects and amp modeling. There's nothing on the market that can touch it, IMHO. Ceratinly not for the current going rate of $499 (I bought a Factory Resealed unit from AMS for $459).
So far, I am extremely pleased with the GNX4 and this is from someone who's an equipment junkie. I've owned, at one time, almost every significant piece of guitar-related effects gear.

So far it has been impossible to get a good sound out of this thing. Everything is buzzy, a bee in a tin can. No depth, very thin sounding. Editing is a breeze. The manual is very thourough. So what if editing is a breeze...the thing still sounds horrible. Plus there was no media card to record with. They don't tell ya that little tidbit of news.

I play bluez, rock, country and a little jazz. This is NOT a good match. Been playing since the late '60's. I use a pretty wide selection of equipment...mostly tube amps. If this was lost or stolen I would count it a blessing. I hate EVERYTHING about this unit. Thank goodness I didn't spend a fortune on it. This is absolutely the WORST sounding effects pedal I have ever heard.

when i bought it, it was like my Xtl..fizzy. So I asked the guys at the Sound Community over at Digitech and they said turn the speaker compensation button on. What a difference! I have an X100 combo tube212 and this thing rocks. Then I heard about the superseries discs for this and figured 47 bucks, why not. Don't know what the differences are but soundwise they are the best I have ever heard in a multieffect unit. I paid for the amp model discs from Line 6 and they were okay but this disc has ten times the amp models. From Engl, Krank, Diezl, Marshall, Mesa, Randall, Peavey and let me add the XXX, and 5150 amp models are awesome! IF you are thinking of a GNX4, you have to get the super seris disc!

The ease of use really depends on your ability to use computers. The unit itself i'd say would be terribly hard to use without hte help of the computer based preset editor.
Sound Quality
:

Many ppl have disputed the capabilities this unit on hte grounds that they can not achieve any decent tones on it. To some extent i can understand why ppl would take this view. The factory preset on this thing is a total crock of shit, and i am being generous in saying this. This thing can produce killer tones and the range of tones it can achieve is truly endless for any style of music.... blues jazz rock etc, but only providing you have time to really sit down to produce em. Alternatively you can use presets made by other guitarist at sound community.
