Editing is easy. Easy enough to get a decent sound. Manual is very good. Firmware 1

Sound Quality : 3
Cleary outdated at this point in time. Even using the supermodel packs it falls short. When your ear is conditioned from months and months of using tube amps(hughes and kettner Switchblade and Peavey 5150) it becomes VERY clear how mediocre this unit sounds. When I heard it again I was shocked by how bad it sounded, NO warmth. In no way close in sound quality even with a tube power amp or through a PA. Reminds me of the old Scholz rockman. Even the effects which i used to think sounded good just don't cut it anymore. I gave it to my son for him to practice with. I still use the tuner and mp3 functons and maybe the recorder function from time to time. AS a guitar tone generator I am done with it. Clean or dirty it just sounds fake and thin anymore.

Reliability : 7
It is slowly breaking down after five years of use

Not bad

When it first came out it was great but now it sounds like a cheap toy. I am done with it. Tube amps rule anyway you look at it.

The GNX4 does a LOT of things: amp/cab modeling, effects chain, recorder, mixer, PC interface. That being said it requires a lot more work to master than a stomp box. Once set up properly it makes playing a real joy. But you do have to work at it.

Sound Quality : 10
As delivered from Digitech the GNX4 is an OK effects box. Spend a few bucks on the MFX SuperModels for this thing and you may quit lugging around that expensive hand wired boutique tube amp. The SuperModels make this box. Without them it is little different than the Boss or Line6 models and maybe not as good sounding as the Vox. With them this is one of the neatest guitar tricks I have ever owned.

Reliability : 10
It doesn't LOOK as well built as some others but it has lasted with no troubles.

Customer Support : 7
Only real beef is no support for Mac OS past 10.4 . Bummer.

Overall Rating : 10
Use this with a LP, a Strat, a SG and a Gretsch Anniversary playing pop/rock/blues/country. If your tastes range far and wide and you'd like to play Atkins one minute and Hetfield the next than this is a great toy. No, it is not perfect but it's a lot more practical than trying to gather up four Marshalls, three Fenders, a Fuchs, two Voxs, a Gibson, a Bad Cat, a Soldano and 45 pedals. The money saved on cables alone pays for the GNX4.

In my opinion, it is possible and to some extent relatively easy to get good sound of this unit or arguably any of the current modelers. Rule number one is that you need to understand this will not sound its best when running into the front end (guitar input) of any guitar amplifier. You have two viable choices: a full range system, like an active PA speaker, studio monitors, keyboard amp or into a power amp and guitar speakers (effects return of a guitar amp will work, even better if its a tube powered guitar amp). Editing patches is relatively easy using the unit itself but extremely intuitive when using the inlcuded X-Edit computer software. You must keep in mind that the factory presets almost all need some tweaking before they sound decent; usually adding a little low end and/or sometimes high end and presence. The manual is easy to follow. I have the most current firmware, which I believe is 1.2.

Sound Quality : 8
Building off of the section above, in my opnion you need to know at least a little about how the different components of a guitar rig contribute to tone. Once you have that down its a lot easier to figure out how to make this (or any) current modeler sound not only good, but very good or excellent. It also helps to know what amp models are even applicable to your needs (you're probably not going to cover Metallica with a Tweed model and you won't likely cover Zepplin with a Rectifier model). I currently use this with strat type and a V-type guitars. I run three P-90s in the strat type and two humbuckers in the V. I run the GNX4 output into the effects return of a Peavey Classic 30 head and into a 2x12 cabinet. This gives my only the power section of the head (none of the volume or tone controls on the amp work; everything is controlled from the GNX4). I have also run this into studio monitors, live PA speakers and a keyboard amp, and while these full range methods are technically proper for hearing everything the modeler is generating, running it through the power section of a tube amp and then into guitar speakers in my opnion gives you the best of both worlds. Not only do you get a number of very credible sounding amplifier models and effects, but the tube power and speaker path seem to strip off the "digitalness" of these modelers and adds warmth and dimension. I am honestly astounded at how good this unit sounds through this rig. My only gripe is with the harsh sounding Blue Marvel speakers in my cab, which I will be replacing with a Hellatone 30 and 60 this week.

While I usually gravitate toward the higher gain, hot rodded marshall type sounds, even a rectifier once in a while (I cut my teeth on 80s metal), I find myself very inspired by the more vintage tones, and the unique ability to warp two amps together to create an all new original tone is not a gimick; it takes some time and patience, but the result is truly unique tone - potentially the signature tone you've been looking for.

The effects are plentiful and sounds very, very good (the choruses and delays particulary stand out). I haven't run into an effect that I didn't find usable in some context. My guitars are hard tails, so I actually have a Van Halen-like patch using the Whammy effect, and it is an unbelievably effective alternative to a locking tremolo system for dive-bomb effects. On the weaker side would be the intelligent pitch shifter, which is effective and is fine within the context of a band, but on its own is lacking somewhat in sonic quality.

I truly like a lot of the amp models including but not limited to crunch, high gain, british stack as well as some of the more vintage tweed, twin and vox models. I tend only to use a few of the cabinet models and found that using the cabinet tuning can sometimes make a huge difference in the usability of an amp model. There are several overdrive/stomp boxes that sound very good in front of the amp models as well as a very tweakable compressor and effective noide suppressor, should you need one. The wahs are very good too.

Between the amp models, effects, cabinet types (and cabinet tuning) there's just too much to discuss about this unit in the context of this review. The point is that this is truly a powerful tool box that given a little time and patience and run through the proper rig can sound incredibly good.

Reliability : No Opinion
Digitech stuff is very dependable; right up there with Roland/Boss in my opnion. My only word of caution is that digital devices don't do well when there are power issues, particularly when there is very low voltage. Keep this in mind and consider power conditioning if you suspect such issues. That is not to say I have anything bad to say about the reliability of this unit. It is very solidly built, but I am never comfortable gigging without a backup regardless of what kind of equipment it is. All this being said I would be more likley to gig with this unit without a backup than some other inferior eqipment/brands.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with DigiTech directly. Good web presence, which to date has served my support needs.

Overall Rating : 8
Yeah - I've played a lot of gear over a lot of years yadda, yadda, yadda, but I'm only semi-pro. I have a day job, cannot afford or justify the investment in ultra high-end boutique equipment (otherwise I'd have a Two-Rock rig...). What I do need is a system that is reliable, reasonably priced and most importantly capable of producing a fair number of high quality, diverse tones for use in whatever cover band I might be involved with at the time. I have owned recent competitive offerings from Roland/Boss and Line6. Quite frankly, I feel I can get any of these to sound good, but all things considered I thought the GNX4 was the best deal. I actually owned an older GNX (3, I think), then the others can came back to a GNX (this newer GNX4). It's priced right, built like a tank, sounds great and has the added benefit of multi-track recording, which I didn't talk about in this review, but am looking forward to using in the near future. I think the reason I came back to the GNX4 is that DigiTech seems to have built a product that is (as a modeler alone) less gimicky or over the top as some of the others. It is pretty straight forward yet has everything you need to dial in some great tones and then just concentrate on making music!

The point is that you should not count this unit out even if the recording features don't appeal to you or because one of the competitors might have the latest greatest this or that with more bells and whistles. It is a very high-end modeler that doesn't have quite as many amps models, cabinet types or some other features that the others might offer (sophisticated multi-track recording aside, of course), but I believe this unit has a higher percentage of high quality, usable models. It doesn't only do vintage and it doesn't only do the high-gain stuff, it really does an excellent job of giving you very usable tones across the spectrum of extremes. What a lot of people seem to miss is the magic that a well dialed-in modeler can make when run through a tube power amp and high quality guitar speaker cabinet. I can't believe how little is written about this aspect of modelers, but to those of us who have figured it out, there is a whole new world of affordable, great tone out there!

Mine is 3 mos old. The sound of the GNX4 is great. Preset editing is done with the control hw or you can use the pc based editor. I liek using the pc Xedit program. Easy to assign parameters and get a visual read of what is happening. The manual is detailed enough to get by but could perhaps go deeper with examples. Much more can be learned at their guitarworkstation site Craig Anderton tutorials. My Firmware is 1.3

Sound Quality : 9
First attempt at getting sound through my monitors had a odd fuzz. Once I read the speaker compensation setting it was 100 times better. No noise, and the gate is actually pretty good. There are couple gate types and once I explored those it got even better. Default was kind of high in most patches.

It's effects are very good. Mine is used with a QSC power amp and a pair of Peavey BW cabs stereo. Other sound rig is through Mackie monitors on my daw. Most times, I jam with the Mackies at home.

Kudos to reviews here. I tested the mfxsupermodels for the gnx4 hard rock disc and my eyes and ears opened up as the reviewers said here. That's the smaller expansion disc I ordered. I was impressed with how many sounds were on it. Excellent tones, amps and cabintes. A big thumbs up here!

Sounds from on board recorder are cd quality. I can transfer songs to it's compact flash card for backing tracks. I use it for song fillers too. The gnx4 also has MP3 playback and drum machine with varied kits. I like how I can connect the ouputs to different sources of amps. Really cool!

Reliability : 9
In the 3 months, I've gigged 8 times with this at church, and twice at nightclubs. I think it's built tough to take most of what I can leash on it.

Customer Support : 10
No repairs. I sent email to them and Digitech responded in about 10 hours. Detailed what I needed and solved my pc issue with Vista.

Overall Rating : 10
I tend to play modern or progressive styles. On or about 15 years. I wasn't big on modelers until recently. What they have done with these is great. Comparing to a Line 6 I started with gnx4 is full of win for my use. The extended features are what I liked best.

This is an update to my previous review. I recently received the mfx supermodels (www.mfxsupermodels.com) Ultimate pack. Wow! The models and presets make everything I had already programmed in, that I thought sounded good, sound like crap...lol. The amp models have so much depth that it's amazing. I'm still not sure how they do it, but I've been blown away by the models. The JCM800 models are incredible. I've owned a couple in the past, and to be honest, I can't really tell a difference. The artist presets are dead on. Don't bother with going to the different forums and downloading anything. Just buy the supermodels pack and you'll never look back.

How easy is it to get a good sound out of it? easy! You need to spend some time with the editor and then it makes more sense. Start with models only. Add effects and see what gives. Manual is good and Digitech has a site GuitarWorkstation.com that has tutorials by Craig Anderton.
Firmware is 1.3. No upgrades, none needed. Works perfectly.

Sound Quality : 10
Can you get the sound of your favorite artists? Who are they? Yes no problem. Go to some sites and look at the gear used and settings. You can get close., Guitar World hosts some presets for the GNX4. Guitars? I use a Epi LP. MIA Strat and a T-5. Amps? I have a Marshall rack power amp and 2 vertical mesa 212's. Effects are stunning! Chorus is clear and reverb is polished.

Reliability : 10
It's heavy. Made of steel construction with cast pedal. Durable enough and I've gigged over 60 x with it so far in'07. Never failed :)

Great site support. MFX supermoel site host has demo links for about anything related to the GNX4. I learned a great deal there.

Overall Rating : 10
GNX4 has a lot of options. There are accessories to add. GNXFC for optional footswitch use, supermodels if you want them ( I did), and a compact flsh card. Found today for about $25 for 2GB. I use my GNX4 for almost anything. I get an idea and it's easy to just hit the recorder. No big setting up required. GNX4 has Pro track software, but I use the latest Sonar 7. GNX4 drivers supported no problem. REAMPING is my favorite feature. You can reamp to the flash or the pc USB connection and software. Easy to change a preset sound or model in your mix instead of recording many tracks and experimenting. Reamp tool is king !! On the floorboard I make instant changes in Stomp Box mode. Boosting my preset for a lead or tapping the delay tempo is easy too. Does it help you make music, or does it get in the way? It sure helps in every way. I have POD XT Live and the GNX4 is just a better more universal toolbox.

Let me first say that I purchased the 4 because the Jam Man was only $200.00 less and there were cool features including the recorder. Boss's loop station was at the same price and I was unaware of the Boomarang. We originally walked out of the GC with a GNX3 when my wife noted that the limitation on the card did not allow very much looping. We paid the difference for the 4. This was a good decision. I have owned my 4 approximately 2 years and am just writting a review. This is because until I decided that I was going to use more than the Jam Man section the effects sounded noisy and abrasive and most of all highly processed. The presets are relatively easy to edit however not without reading the manual. As already mentioned by many others there are resources on the web and Craig Andertons web tutorial is excellent. The manual. Here is the rub. The manual is excellent if you want to use that 4 to its fullest capabilities, however has some glaring omissions. To get to the USER presets one must first modify and store something. There is not one mention of how to enter the user presets by some simple procedure. I don't use many of the amp modeling effects and it would have been nice to see a switch (eg: Boss ME-30) to turn off amp modeling short of dumping them. The foot switches are a pain and when you must hit two switches simultaneously you better be a good shot or all kinds of unwanted sounds come up. A stage musician would find this rather disquiting. Finally, it will not go through my Road King's effects loop, believe me I have tried everything. I will try a 20/40 dB inline pad. The bypass sucks if it is used as an input device. Hitting the two switches is bad enough but you must match the output pot to compensate for the loss of gain from the presets. It is noisy when bypassed. My firmware is version 1.3. I would like to see an effects/amp listing for each preset. This would make the unit a lot easier to pre visualize what combinations make up a preset.

Sound Quality : 8
The EJ preset with modeling played through a Strat is nice while the rest are over the top. Some of the special features like 5ths and Mo slide age great, after I get rid of the amp modeling or turn it down.
All of the effects are really good they must be used in the proper proportion to achieve a clean sound.I set up trembo to use as just a tremolo and its min effect is still too much, yet the control over speed is nice. The expression pedal is a great feature and makes all the effects much more effective. Although I have found that I get a digital ring to some of the effects. I thought ok turn down the trebble and I was wrong turn down the bass some of these offects overload. The reduced Bass (-8 to -12) works in most cased. Close proximity to FM signals from a wireless interferes with some effects. For the most part the unit is versitile for all its effects and when properly applied are very nice. The studio reverb is a great place to go when wou need that thick clear reverb. I believe that my ME-30 still sounds beter in the effects department

Reliability : 10
I have had it for two years no trouble.

Customer Support : 10
The website speaks for itself. and it is obvious that with the addition of Craig Andertons tutorials these people are serious.

Overall Rating : 9
I play a wide variety of music and jam in a trio the unit is a good match for the looper' however for blues and other forms of music the Boogie is more than enough. I have been playing for 45 years. I have most of the representative guitar and amp genre's.If it were lost as I have said saterically in the past I would go to rehab for people that loose large objects. If it were stolen I would replace it with a boomerang. I love the versatility and infinite level of effects mixes.I hate that it does not have a "true" bypass and that the preamp is still on without the effects which makes it dificult to play as an inline device. If I could put this through my effects loop it would be of greater value. On the other hand if you hook it to a valve junior with the cabinet it can be used in the amp modeling mode with great effect, assuming you reduce the offending overloading effects. The looper is very versitle and that's why I bought it, and that is why it will get high marks. As an effects processor, my ME-30 sounds distinctly better and far less noisy. I also wish that the looper could bypass the effects/amp modeling section. My wish list is 1. a simple control to loose the modeling 2. a simple control to enter the USER presets. 3. A true bypass 4. a built in attenuation pad for use with an effects loop 5. better assignment of foot switches like choosing an effect from each bank and being able to switch to them. The bounceback is cute but in reality not very effective. It does get in the way if I am going from an effects ladden song to prehaps straignt blues but I am working on a solution which would perhaps use a switchbox. As an overall product see my rating. As an effects processor I would give it a 5 or a 6. If you have any suggestions to make this work in a loop please let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Ya I did shut off the speaker compensation.

I'm not associated in any way with Digitech or the sales of any music products. I'm a working stiff just like you so here's my 2 cents worth. Seems to me some people are idiots as the GNX4 isn't that difficult to use right out of the box. I'm only a hobbyist and I managed to use this beast right away and love it. Hint, you might want to adjust the volume knobs on the back of the unit and at least read the GNX4 setup instructions, duh! Plug it in and turn the selection knob to a preset and away you go, it's that easy. Use the custom pedal section to make your own custom pedal combinations. I was easily able to make unique custom pedal configurations I'd never heard before and save them as a preset. Take the time to connect this puppy to your PC, install the included software, and it's easy to customize even the presets that are pre-installed. Save your presets to your PC then to CDROM for a backup of your work. People, this thing has tons of features and it will take time to learn it all or you can use it out of the box. If you have quality guitars, the processing power of the GNX4 will not let you or your sound down. Let me assure you that you will not be disappointed with the quality of the sound this effects monster can make for you. I'm very happy I bought this beast and would replace it again if it grew legs.

Sound Quality : 10
Unlike the cheap digital modeling amps out there that claim to simulate every other amp on the market, I think this puppy does a really great job of modeling many amps. When I select the Fender Hot Rod Deville (HRD) preset and play it through my Marshall Valvestate, the GNX4 actually makes my Marshall sound like a HRD. How do I know? I own both amps, that's how! I also purchased the MFX Supermodels (Google it and check out the sound samples on the web site) but there are over 1250 presets people created, saved, and uploaded on the Digitech web site. Many presets there have sound bites as well so you can hear them before downloading them. I downloaded all of them! There are presets for SRV, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Santana, EVH, Sabbath, Metallica, Beatles, Beach Boys, Neil Diamond, Jazz, Rock, Blues, Heavy Metal, Punk, Techno, tube amps, reverbs, rotos, miked amps, Plexi's, Fender Twins, Bassman's, Verbs, Rotors, Vox's, Marshall's, Dumble's, Drop D tuning, and whatever else you might want. There are tons of presets listed by song title if you want emulate a particular song too. I created several of my own presets in no time and they are totally unique. As for learning how to use this beast, instead of listening to illiterate wannabees badmouthing a great product, do a Google search and watch tutorial videos on it on the Internet. The tutorials even have links to more presets, additional drum patterns, and much more. I don't play gigs so I have no idea how well the GNX4 works on stage but in my house you can dial the volume down on your screaming loud Fender Hot Rod Deville and get fantastic distortion without waking the baby in the next room. The price might be a little high but consider this, I bought 2 Fultone effects pedals, 2 Digitech, and 3 Boss pedals before buying my GNX4. I still love my effects pedals but haven't bought another one since buying this tone monster.

Reliability : 10
I've owned mine for over a couple years without any issues and it's still going strong. I also use surge suppressors with all my equipment to protect my investments. The case is metal and the pedals are plastic. I use my hands to operate it. I suppose if you jump on the plastic pedals you could break them. If you treat your equipment with the same respect you give your $1000.00 guitar, you shouldn't have a problem. I'm not playing gigs but the times I did use my feet it felt solid enough. I'm happy I purchased the GNX4 and would replace it in a NY minute.

Customer Support : 10
I never had a problem with my unit but I did write an email to Digitech asking some unrelated questions once and received a response the same day. I never needed them for any of the Digitech products I've purchased.

Overall Rating : 10
While you can play this beast right out of the box, there are tons of settings for you to play with and learn. This thing has endless possibilities. Before I purchased the GNX4 I thought about saving some loot on the GNX3000. The GNX4 has much more processing power and is a much stronger unit than the other models. That's why this one is the flagship model. Definitely get ths one for the processing power and the rest will work itself out if you actually use the noodle God gave you and read a little bit of information about the unit's capabilities. If you can't read then play with the knobs and find the video tutorials on the Internet.

That's why this one is the flagship model. Definitely get ths one for the processing power and the rest will work itself out if you actually use the noodle God gave you and read a little bit of information about the unit's capabilities. If you can't read then play with the knobs and find the video tutorials on the Internet.

Once you spend some time with it, it's relatively easy to edit patches and amp combos. It does require reading the manual to get the hang of it. The manual is very good and pretty detailed. Mine came with the Power User's Guide, which goes into further depth. It's not as easy as say, a Boss ME-30 or 50, but it's a much more complex unit. Once you understand the different modes and features, editing and using the features is relatively easy.

Sound Quality : 9
Here's where the controversy seems to exist in these reviews. First off, to those that can't get a good sound out of it, stop expecting this unit to make your 15w Gorilla practice amp sound like a Marshall TSL stack. It won't happen. I've used it with my Marshall Valvestate 40 (13 years old and still going strong) and my 100w Carvin tube half-stack and gotten pleasing results. Does it sound a little digital? Yes, sometimes. But then, it IS digital. Overall, it's not hard to get very good sounds out of it. I'm ordering the mfx supermodels ultimate pack, as I hear that really brings this thing to life, but I'm happy with it now. And yes, I've used some of the 'real' amps and stompboxes that are modeled and am still happy with the sound of the GNX4. Remember - read the manual. And you MUST be mindful of the speaker compensation switches on the back. If they are in the 'wrong' position, it will sound like crap.
Aside from the very usable sounds, the beauty of this unit is the almost overwhelming options available to control your effects. Within one preset, you can use an amp on Channel 1, Channel 2, then warp them (in effect having 3 amps in one preset). You can use the expression pedal to control up to three parameters simultaneously, as well as the three control footswitches to also control 3 parameters each. Theoretically, you can control 12 parameters with four switches, plus three amp models - all in one preset.

For example. My band plays "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" by Def Leppard. In one preset, I have a clean amp with chorus and reverb (Channel 1). Channel 2 is the 'dirty' channel. Then, for the leads, I step on the expression pedal and viola! With one step it kicks in the 'screamer stompbox for a little more distortion and mids, cuts the chorus, and adds some delay. What's easier than that? The 'Bounceback' feature is also nice, which lets you switch back and forth between two presets using only one footswitch.
There are simply too many features to discuss. The built-in 8-track is very easy to use, the drum machine is versatile and easy to use. And I don't think I've even scratched the surface yet.

Reliability : 8
To those of you that have shied away from Digitech problems (as I have) because of their 'old' units, with bad sound and poor quality, I suggest giving them a new look. Their X-series pedals are very good, and the Scott Ian Black-13 is one of the best heavy distortion pedals I've ever heard (read my review of that). So far, I've had no problems with it. It's metal-cased and the knobs seem pretty sturdy.

I play classic rock, 80's hair-metal, thrash, nu-metal, and blues for 15 years now. I've gone through a number of processors and pedals, and so far, this is the only one I've used that I haven't had one complaint about. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if something happened to this one. I got a great deal on this one used, but even at the $499 retail price it's a great bargain, even if you only use it for recording and practicing. Live, it keeps the tapdancing to a bare minimum and gives you flexibility you'd never have with just one amp and even a truckload of effects pedals. This thing has helped me improve my playing and maximize my practice time.

This is about how quiet the unit records with a mic into it with NO FXs records a song , on a single acoustic steel string guitar .

It is a one minute and twenty five second .wav file @7.2 mb .

The .wav file format was chosen because it is to my opinion and ( fact ) a clearer sounding format to use and it is a critical element to use to asses the quietness of the GNX4's recorder to see how good or bad it is as a recording device in a stand alone manner using the CF memory card in it .

So far there is a lot of positive post's on the electric guitar side of the GNX4 so I believe this post is a good and valid assessment of how well a GNX4 performs on miking an acoustic guitar or for that matter any acoustic instrument .

Sound Quality : 10
I used one EV mic with a SM57 type flavor in it's recording sound characteristic behavior , don't recall the model , only that it is a good microphone in the low $100.00 variety of microphones .

I used my small stereo 70 watt monitor with 2 8" JBL's and 2 piezos in the room hear my guitar fully and clearly with out it being so loud as to the point of getting into the mix itself through the microphone as I recorded .

Microphone on a microphone stand 3 to 4 inches away and below and towards the neck was the placement of the microphone .

Quiet room with no ambient room echo/reverberation

Reliability : 10
Worked like a charm , NO FXs at all . Dry setting on the GNX4's mic setting for recording in the song set up .

Customer suport is great ,

I chose a steel stringed acoustic as my next choice for two reasons .

so ...

I will talk about my personal needs in a digital recorder here .

Learning to play guitar had a series of choices . What kind of guitar do I start with , naturally most of us get a little nylon for our first taste of the guitar learning experience and progress from there to either a steel stringed acoustic and or electric guitar or a full blown electric guitar .

Once most people who choose an electric guitar stop there .

And those who go with an acoustic steel string have the ability to jump into a electric easily compared to an electric guitar only type person who finds out how hard and more strenuous a acoustic steel string is to play and forgets about it because of that fact .

I wanted to record my primary instrument the harmonica and some how in time I have been blessed and now play guitar and other instruments as well . The GNX4 is a dream come true for me .

Picture this fact :

What everyone hears when they listen to a song on the net , in a car radio , television , where ever , it is heard through some kind of stereo system , some big some small and most average in size and cost .

Everyone of them pleases the owner's ears too over all when they listen to music and they either buy CDs or download ( legal and illegal , I don't really care )it to play later on over and over .

When they hear a song they hear , voices , guitars mixed in with keyboard , horn and reed sections violins and bassoprofundos , bass guitars and some how we all hear pretty much the same over all sound and like it .

We don't hear a full blown Marshall double stack , or a Bass player's SVT with it's 8x10 Speaker cabinets , we don't here a Fender amp , or the difference of a Stratavarious that cots a million $ ,

but ,

we here what our speakers are capable of reasonably reproducing and that is where the GNX4 stands out for you in your recording of modeled amps and cabinets and in the case of this recording as a representation of the GNX4's ability to make a acoustic guitar sound really good , that is what this post is all about :)

Overall Rating : 10
This one take recording sound file is an acoustic steel stringed guitar recording of [ The Beatles } , " In MY Life " :

www. sendspace.com/ file/ u37v00

I put one space in between url to get this this review on the forum fast .

It's a Free File sharing website be patient and get past any pop ups because they do randomly pop up from web surfer to web surfer from visit to visit .

You be the judge on the sound of this recording as far as the transparency of the GNX4 , and it not adding any kind of noticeable distortion or coloration to the guitar's sound .

I want to get a super duper phantom 48 volt mic because I think this unit could do it nicely with one of those type mics for a super sound when it comes to mic'd recordings for vocals and acoustic instruments .

Easy :)

As can be expected from a unit that promises the potential that the GNX4 offers there is A LOT here to wrap your head around. But the way I look at it, if you're going to make an investment of $500 then you'd BETTER be willing to invest some time becoming familiar with at least the very basics of it's operation (ahem...for all you "musicians" who gave this a 1 or 2 for sound quality LEARN HOW TO USE THE EFF'N SPEAKER COMPENSATION SWITCH BEFORE COMING ON HERE AND IMPRESSING US WITH YOUR ILLITERATE DIATRIBES!!! Whew, I feel much better now that I got that out of the way...). There is a learning curve involved here and how steep it is depends on how deep you want to go into mastering the full potential of this thing. Fortunately, the manual is quite thorough and well written and there are plenty of examples on the Digitech website and elsewhere on the net.

This unit is not for those of you who would blow $500 a pop for instant gratification!

Sound Quality : 9
Right out of the box the presets are just okay, at least for my personal tastes. I used to work at GC and I'll tell you straight up that manufacturers presets are created to be a tool for the salesguy to demo the product, i.e. a little bit of everything for everybody's style and tastes.

There is tremendous potential here for creating sound. The unit gives you the tools, sort of like a painters pallette of colors. It's up to you to provide the inspiration to take those tools and make something of them (again, my caveat of spending some time with this thing to learn what's involved here). Create your own amp, or get the excellent set of amp models from MTProsound, dial in your effects, subtly or over-the-top, and you'll be grinning. Again, patience is involved here. However, the X-Edit software certainly helps with this task.

Through headphones (with Speaker Compensation ON), the sound is dead on. Through amps you need to run it through the effects return (with Speaker Compensation OFF) to preserve the sound that you hear through headphones. If you don't have an effects loop on your amp, try going through the front with both treble and bass to 0 and the mids to half way. The reason for this is quite simple really. The GNX4 is already a preamp. Running it through the front of your amp (another preamp} only squeezes the sound more, usually to the detriment of the original sound. If your amp's preamp doesn't have a three band EQ or an effects loop, then why are you spending 500 beans on this? Take that money and get yourself a better amp fergodsake! Then we'll talk...

Reliability : 9
No problems here. Steel chassis, sturdy switches. I am a little concerned though that there is no cleat for wrapping the oh-so-delicate power supply cable around to protect it from sudden tugs on the cable (careless handling, drunken bandmates, etc)

Customer Support : 10

Everything about this device was developed with one thought in mind-to help you become a more creative, better playing, better sounding musician and to have a load of fun doing so. With all that this has to offer there is at least something here to interest everyone. Experimenting. Practicing. Recording. Gigging. It's all right there at your feet. Just be willing to spend some time with it and you won't be disappointed

now that i've had the gnx4 for a coouple of months and the honeymoon stage is over, i thought i'd just give an update to my previous review.............................................................

the gnx4 is not the easiest mfx unit to use but it is deep in options so it has to be somewhat complex in programing to really use the available options. however, x-edit makes the gnx4 fairly easy to tweak.

i upgraded to the ultimate superpack from mfxsupermodels.com and wow, i am blown away. too many good rigs to chose from. if you can't find your extra tubey sound here...you might be deaf. i don't know why the at last reviewer didn't listen to the many, many people that suggested mfxsupermodels but he missed out on the greatest rig ever. he may be a tonal retard anyway. just to make up for that guy's terrible review, i'll help some of you guys out. let me know what amp model you are interested in and i'll send you an mp3 of that sound/preset and some info about the amp. this offer ends october 31st 2007 (this month only). it may take some time to reply to everyone but be patient and i'll try to get to you. I DO NOT WORK FOR MFXSUPERMODELS.COM NOR AM I COMPENSATED BY THEM. i'm just one really happy customer.

very difficult it??s an all in one so the menus are compressed and you need to be an audio engineer to know about the hertz or a good equalitation, so if you have a lot, really a lot (months) time and extra money to purchase the tutorial books thet explain who to use all the functions you will know all the utilities that this machine have

Sound Quality : 2
i plug in in fender, marshalls (transistor and valve amps) and in a P.A system with a fender stratocaster and ibanez ax100, this is the worse part of the gnx4, when you plug in any guitar amp and put any of the simulation amps and cabinets, distortions, overdrives and fuzzes that this thing has, you will have a lot of saturation a dirty and unpleasant sound and believe me you??ll need a lot of time ( months) to have a good sound that satisfice you, this thing sounds good in a P.A. system very digital but sounds good, THIS THING IS BAD FOR PLUG IN A GUITAR AMP, other defect it??s that you need a direct box cause this thing up the pitch of the guitar even with the comp speaker button on you wont have a good sound

Reliability : 5
metallic carcase, but after 6 months some buttons don??t work , the power supply do??n??t work, the knobs too loosen and here in mexico it??s practically imposible to get them

Customer Support : 8
the customer support are great they answer next day but it??s a short answer not very explicit special if you need a lot of information to solve a problem with the gnx4, good

i play progressive, industrias, blues, hard core, for 5 years and had a lot of this divices, about the gnx4 delays, whammy and some effects are good very digital but good, distortions and amps simulators are awfull when you connect in to your guitar amp, this a marketing device more than a musical, cause later you buy the gnx4 you need a cd with a digital equalitation, a book of tutorials a flash card, a direct box and at least you wont soun awesome, i hate digitech they only thing in the money they win with this pedalboards. DON??T BUY IT

Easy to work with. The manual is good if you read it once or twice. Firmware 1.3 and no upgrades since mine is current. Getting sounds is easy and if you've worked with a modeler it should be no different. If you are new to modeler, take your time. Use the speaker componsation button in the correct output modes. There are quite a few and they are self explanatory if you read the manual and use the illustrations.

Sound Quality : 10
I use it with a Tech 21 power engine. Sounds great. I use it with guitars from Fender N-Ville Tele and LP Classic. No noise. Pretty quiet. I don't like gates up high. Even set low it is quiet. All the effects are cool. Sound qual of the recorder is really good. I run thru my stereo sys on the XLR jacks and to a small mixer. Nice full sound.

I play rock, alt and blues. Fits them all. Favorite feature is its routing outputs and choices of configuration. Pedal assign. Nothing to hate :) I wish it came with models from the mfx guys :P I had a pod pro and GT-8 and sold them. I can make music anytime day or night. I can mic my amp and go right to the recorder if I want. Mixing with pro Tracks isn't bad but I plan on getting Sonar soon. Anything else?? Like the other guys here. Grab the Ultimite model sounds for amp models! Just like I went more for the modeling extras in Line 6, I say the same for the GNX4. Some things are better and mfx discs are that.

Had mine two months and sent it back. I bought another one after other pedals didn't satisfy me either. Sounds were buzzy but i was using it wrong the whole time I had it. Speaker compensation was not pushed in. That entire time I never caught on to speaker switches on the back panel. I felt like a real idiot. Don't do what I did! Firmware is 1.3 and curent. The sounds are great when you dial them. I like the pickup simulator a lot. Manual is good (if you read it).

Seem to find most any sound I want. I like the effects. Noise gates are there so no issues for me. I don't gate high so the sound is not choppy like it was on other pedal's gates. My amp is a Samson servo power amp with a pair of Velocity speakers. Sounds great.

I liked the sounds and the fact that it has very very short mute on patch changes. I like that I can record to the card without requiring a computer. I wish it came with Supermodel Amps and the Video Examples! All the rave and well worth it! I have the Hard Rock set and love the additional modeling tones. Not just one amp to tweak. Those are made by amp channel and making presets is easier than before and sound 50x better imo. I am upgrading to the Ultimate Series soon. I want more!

If you buy this thing prepare to get the MFX supermodels as well. Without those it is just a run of the mill modeler. With the supermodels ....... Lookout!. The combination of these two things is going to change the way people look at amp sound and how it is generated. Get ready to sculpt and perfect your tone because it has all that you need to do so.

Sound Quality : 10
very easy to get a good tone if you like to spend hours tweaking.... I DO. This is the art of creating tone, not plug and play. I fully agree with the reviewer below. To get to the real "meat" you have to tweak AND have the MFX Supermodels. Like the guy below I have and have had alot of gear. Preamps, heads, racks, etc, processors, Pedals, anything to get "that" tone. This thing with those models can replicate a high end tube amp and cab WITH high quality effects on top of it! In stereo! I just tweaked an MFX 6505 patch that literally destroys my 5150 head. The patch has that tube amp sag. Took me about 2 hours to tweak but man is it worth it. Best high gain tone I have EVER heard from ANY amp. Unbeleivable because I am a tube amp freak and this thing sounds better! I do run it through the effects return of 5150 tube heads but that is just for output and since it is through the effects return the power amp is essentially wide open. That helps to get some tube output grind, but the actual front end preamp tone generation is superior to the real head and most other heads I know of. I have fooled many a friend with this thing and they just can't believe it is digital. One of the tricks I have discovered is backing off of the high end settings and tweaking the frequency of the presence and treble. This really brings on a real tube amp sound like the actual amp but better. I have found the perfect combination of settings for perfect saturation and pick attack and note articulation. all I can say is WOW.

Reliability : 9
Have had it for two years now. Gigs, practice, dirt, heat, cold, beer. It's still alive and well

Customer Support : 8
good

Overall Rating : 10
Like I said I am a die hard tube man...........But I do beleive that the MFX/Digitech modeling technology has reached a point that makes it at the very least a viable partner to tube amps. Combined with a tube poweramp, the tones you can produce are out of this world. What is exciting is the fact that sample rates and processor speeds will only keep going up. This can only lead to better sounding models and the software behind them . WHew!

easy enough to get to the basic presets and get some tone out of it, but you need to spend some time with it to get to the real tonal "meat".

Sound Quality : 10
out of the box, the presets are "ok" depending on what you play through. usable at least. the real tone is in the "mfx supermodels". i bought only the rock/metal amp set for $47. after loading up my very first choice amp model "engl drv" i started grinning ear-to-ear. preset after preset blew me away, which is not easy to do since i've been playing guitar for over 28 years and studio engineering for 17 years. i thought i'd try my hand at writing a new supermodel preset, easy enough to do, but not even in the same league as the mfx supermodels. the guy who made those presets is a genious! he had to have tons of gear to analyze the real amps to come up with presets this good. i'm going to pay up the extra $68 and upgrade to the ultimate package ($115 total). when you buy this rig, buy the mfx supermodels (http://www.mfxsupermodels.com/) and you will not be disappointed. i have thoroughly tried/used many other rigs before settling on this on. i tried the podxt live, v-amp pro, gnx3000, rocktron prophesy, and many real tube heads and preamps. this is the way to go. this thing has so many features and connections it's ridicules.

so far no problems. after years of using digitech gear i feel that i can trust it.

I was demoing this at Guitar Center and the guitar salesperson had no idea how to use it and promptly pushed me on a Pod Xt and Xt live. Those were alright but I wanted the recorder feature. I bought the GNX4 and took it home. Having it for a few months and learning more made me realise the potential of the pedal. The manual was good but there are more sites and the workstation forum to help understand better. There are sites with more descriptions and tutorials at the workstation and supermodel site.

Sounds by the factory were good but heavy on effects like the PODS. I just turned them down. I learned about the speaker compensation buttons and that is important to know. Using with an amp, off. With headphones or recordings ON. Some say keep it on all the time but my amp works fine with it off. My guess is that buttons setting can make reviews be a "1" instead of a "10". Firmware is 1.3 currently.

The editor is simple to install and easy to use. It has options for the GNX save load, and direct to your comp. Also comes with Protracks Plus recording suite. I think its like Sonar or Cakewalk.

Sound Quality : 10
Sound is good as long as you use it correctly with the compensation switches. I just started running through a pair of GEMINI powered 15's and it sounds great. My amp is a Crate gfx and I go through the loop bypasses the preamp in my amp like many have said to do. Noise is not a problem. Using a N-ville Tele or Schecter C1 plus sounds great. I had a GNX1 and the effects were kind of in the background. The GNX4 has better hardware and chips and sound more alive to me. I looked at sites and the forums and added the Classic pack supermodels. Those knocked me to the floor. Marshall and Fender amps were juicy and warm in sound. I can't recommend those enough for the GNX4. The stock sounds were fine. Now by adding new models made the real difference for me. Notes extend and sustain in far better. Dropping guitar volume cleans up better than before.

Reliability : 10
Only one gig to report but sounds were awesome. After about 10 band practices and moving around it still works. I have to buy a case for it. I'd say its dependable.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Support was fair. I email about a version description and it was 2 days for a response. No big deal since I sent as a customer service and not a techical question.

Classic Rock covers and it matches up for us. I discovered more with the model addition and video examples of using the GNX4. Details about assign of switches and things I never thought of before or wanted to attempt. It's easy to use now and makes using it in the band much better. I thought it all had to be done in many presets but the examples show me how to do it all with one preset or a few. For recording it can't be beat. I use the recorder 8 tracks without a computer and love it. Favorite part is Reamp. On my recording I can set a track dry and change presets and those are reflected in my recording for testing out different sounds on tracks. Really cool!!! I had the Tonelab desk version that I liked but the GNX4 is ten times that in features. You need a compact flash card to use the recorder. I paid $32 from newegg for a 2gb size. I used to have the Tonelab and a Fostex 8 track recorder now the GNX4 is my new baby! So many great things about the GNX4 to list, some I overlooked when first trying it out. Once you have it and get experienced with it then you know how useful it really is.

Easy to use: turn knobs, press buttons. Editing: simple and you can go deep into tweaking if that's your thing. Manual: the best of it's type I've ever seen, and crossed referenced very well. Getting good sounds: read the manual, or as we say in the IT profession, RTFM.

Digitech calls this a Worksation and not a modeling pedal because it's desgined to go from practice, to creative inspiration, then on to recording and live play. How long would it take you to buy and then learn the ins and outs of a separate recorder, drum machine, multiple effects boxes or a multi-effect box, a looper, and an amp modeler?

Sound Quality : 10
Sound: It's subjective. A lot of us get tones our ears like and some of you aren't liking what you're hearing. I don't know how you should configure this with the guitars, amps or monitors you have available, or how much time you should spend tweaking. But consider that the lack of tone you're getting may not be the unit's fault. With the number of people that gave this a 7 or higher, maybe you haven't found the sweet spot with your setup, or haven't found the tone setting option, like speaker compensation, that will make this work for you. A '1' rating seems really harsh, and when it's in every category, is suspect, like you're really PO'd or, sorry to say this, immature.

Effects: very usable, a good variety, and range in sound qulaity from OK to good. I like the selection of distortion boxes the best, although it's really fun to play around with all the other ones.

Amp models: I really don't care what's being modeled. I need a rich clean, a tight crunch, a naturally compressed and sustain filled lead, and a thundering scooped tone. Those are all there. The ability to perform deep editing and change the amps character is impressive.

Bass amps: The bass amps and cabs kick hard! I'm a gigging guitarist and bass player and I'm having a blast with these.

Reliability : No Opinion
I can't rate this because a month is too soon to tell. The unit seems fairly tough. I'd never gig without a backup, no matter what kiind of gear we're talking about.

For 30+ years I've been playing rock and country with a Fender Tele Deluxe, Gibson ES355, G&L Leagacy, and Ibanez RG and use MuiscMan combos. I have a sinful number of pedals and other gear. The GNX4 is a tool for me to practice, create, and record, and I hope to be able to use it for live play either as an effects pedal in front of my combos or as a full modeler thru a pair of Atomic Amps I'm considering buying. I love the ability to practice, create, and record from a single unit. There's nothing I truly dislike. The day I bought this I was actually planning to get an XTLive, but I hit the internet to do price research before leaving the house and saw this and thought, hmmmm. The fantastic number of features sold me on it even though the XTL would be cool too.

What I'd like to see: a unit where you tell it the guitar you're using and that you want the tones from AC/DC's Back in Black. It configures your tone to that, offers a usable drum pattern with tempo, maybe a bass line to go with it, and off you go. If there's a clean passage in a song, then a crunch, then an acoustic part, the unit would create the patches for you, including effects. I'd use these patches as the basis for my own sounds as well as cover song duties.

I am writing this to defend a product I have come to appreciate over the last several years I have owned it. I don't know what precipitated that last unprovoked rant, but it seems rather silly. And who writes to bash a product they have never owned and have probably never used first hand? The product is probably about as easy to use as it can be considering the number of features it has. Look at the features and make a decision if you really need all that stuff though, or it could be more worth your while to buy something simpler with a newer generation processor. The screen could also use an upgrade to an LCD to make more parameters visible at one time.

Sound Quality : 10
Don't get me wrong, this thing only deserves a 7 or so if you rate how it sounds out of the box. If you go www.mfxsupermodels.com you can purchase different upgrades from a giant library of amp models that sound way better that what the unit shipped with. When digitech upgraded through the GNX series from GNX1-4, the capabilities of the units increased, but they never bothered to utilize the increased capabilities in the newer units to make the amp models any better. The guy who sells the upgrades is sound engineer who figured out how to do his own sampling of amps to create amp models. The result is 100% better that the original digitech models. Ok maybe it still only deserves a 9 or so, but I have to offset what the guy (read goofball) below rated it. You also have to rate these kind of things within the context of what they are. This is a "jack of all trades" kind of device, and for that, it sounds quite good. I also own an Fender Blues Deluxe, and of course the Blues deluxe model does not sound quite as good as a real Fender--duh! but it can also sound a lot more like a real marshall or bogner - or whatever - than my Fender can, no matter what kind of stomp box I put in front of it. Not to mention that the GNX 4 is alot easier to control for different venues or for PC recording than my Fender is. If you happen to have $50,000 laying around to build a home studio and by tons of different amps, mics, effects etc. knock yourself out. Of course you will get a better sound. But for $600 (price including upgrades) you will be hard pressed to get a better sound or find an easier way to record.

Reliability : 9
Sturdy enough. Unlike my Fender. I had to get it fixed after it got a BROKEN INPUT. Go figure. It does have a bit of a bug with the card reader, but nothing that interupts any of it's functions. If I shut it off when it is on a smart card preset, when I turn it on again, I have to switch the preset to the next number before it will output any sound (See customer support below). It needs a little jog in order to read the card correctly.

Customer Support : 10
Easy to get ahold of and talk to. Very prompt response on email. I spoke to them about the above problem. The device is out of warranty, so it would cost me a flat rate of $85 to get it fixed. At this point, the problem it is only a minor irritation and not worth spending the money to fix.

I play metal, a bit of jazz, and worship music at church. I have been playing daily for 17 years. I own: PRS Custom 24, Ibanez RG270, LTD M207, Samick L5 knockoff and a cheap LTD 5 string bass. Old Yahmaha keyboard. Amp- Fender Blues Deluxe. GNX2, GNX4, various pedals, mostly DOD, and a Morley wah.

I'm not a user, that would be a mortal sin... however, the only thing that really matters to me is how it sounds, and I do have something to say about that. (read on)

Sound Quality : 1
I am a sound engineer, Pro Tools certified, AND a guitar player, so take heed of what I am saying. I've heard this being used by a couple of different guitarists in different styles of music and it sucks. Has no life, no energy. Distortion sounds 'phasy' with no definition, punch or clarity. Definitely sounds extremely digital- btw, that's a bad thing. Clean channels are too bright, harsh... Through SM57's this sounds sound even harsher, and through solid state amps just make me wanna shoot my head. You want to get some punch get a Mesa, or for some serious distortion that sounds like a monster will come out of the speakers and kill you, a Bogner Uberchall. You're definitely going to pay for that, but if you can't afford it, then get some analog distortion, or a couple of Boss pedals, which sound 100 times better. For the price of this junk, you can get all you need in nice little stomp boxes and have money for the patch-chords and the power supply's.

If you're a kid, you're 13, and your learning, fine, buy Digitech stuff.. if you're a professional, or even a working musician with some sort of public appearances, please, get yourself a nice tube amp, a nice guitar, and be done with it.

Reliability : 2
Too many plastic parts... not something you would consider stepping on I would say. Also, the inputs on these things go dead... i've see this issue on gigs as well. All Digitech pedals included.

I play classic rock and metal. Also been playing for 6 years.
I have Fender Strat, ESP Kirk Hammett, Les Paul, Mesa Boogie Triple Rec,
Fender Deluxe.

I think there are better remedies for achieving tone, and quality sounds.
Even amp modeling doesn't do the job in the studio like a real stack cranked to the sweet spot would, but they work.

For those of you who don't know, the converters on these digital pedals are bad. Digital conversion in these also causes 3rd order harmonic distortion... which is also bad. Not to mention jitter, lack of coloration and character, and no headroom.

That's all.

Took a chance and have this GNX4 now. Funny how many guys dont realize the potent power right below them. Out- o- da- box tones are like most modelers and lack. I used the speaker comp switches on and it killed the fuzzies. Editing is easy and easier once you watch some of the videos from mfxsupermodels site. Do that and you are Golden! The manual has strong and weak points. I have firmw 1.3 and no changes since then.

Dont forget, this is a recorder,mp3 player and a shlew of other things with Comp Flash access.

Sound Quality : 10
Sounds Fine. No bizz no buzz no noise. Through my Les its not too harsh like the GT-8 I tried. Effects are Golden! Love em! I also use a Mesa 20/20 power amp and will find a Sim90 soon. It also does kewl jobs with the Crate Powerblock. I can find satisfying tones easy. I have the superdisc model pack and its awesome! thanks to guys who suggested these libraries of sound! I had all the Pod packs too with my XTL but really like what the packs made for GNX4 better. I'm getting an ear candy cabinet since its so recommended. Ear candy to go with Ear candy!! hoo haaa

Reliability : 10
using my GNX4 live 2-3 gigs a month. People love my sound. Thanks go out to Matt, Greg and Mike (G3456), the prosound guys who made the superpacks. They helped me fine tune my sounds with my crappy Sheffield speakers. I emailed them at 1am and NEVER expected an answer in 5 min. They answered a few min later! I'm in AZ, I think that's around 4 am there time!! Wow! The GNX4 case is metal and its pretty tough. As long as I dont jump on footswitches I should be good a while

Customer Support : 9
Digitech reps were always helpful. I have not used them though. The upgrade is the supermodels packs since Digitech never made a pack to support the item. Sometimes it can be better that way. No repairs yet to talk about. I have heard the USB port can get damaged if ya step on it. Duh!

Overall Rating : No Opinion
Pretty much play hard stuff and alt for the last 12 years. I have an XTLIVE, had the Gt-8, GNX3000 and a few boss stompboxes. If stolen Id buy another no doubt. I comp this to the GNX3000 and the guys are right. The GNX3000 latency is too high for Live Use. Prolly why its gone down in price. POD sounds like doo doo to me and I don't like variax guitars. GT-8 was like the Pod. Thin and fizzy less control.

I love control assigns. Thank goodness Digitech made this so kewl! I did some homework picking out modelers and this option is great for LIVE. I can select from 160 presets with CF card and User locations. Easy. With the superpack it just gets better. Big Kudoes to those guys!

Recording- oh yeaaaah! It does that well! I have a 2G CF and have not ever ran out of space yet. No computer and get the tracks in quick. Add the ProTracks (I have Sonar) and its better. REAMP is the best. Select dry recording and reamp away testing guitar sounds without ever having to retrack them. Here again, the prosound guys answered all my Q's about this. I sent them so many emails they prolly hate me by now but they answer every time!! This whole thing is just easy and I dont see a better one coming. A huge combo of uses, adding superpacks give a library of amps to pick. The recorder and mp3 player for practicing and a pretty kewl drum machine Pods and Boss will not add.

easy to use. i've had it for two years. Sounds great.

Sound Quality : 6
After two years I thought that it sounded pretty good. I tweaked and got what I thought were great sounds. I guess that's all that my ears were used to. I purchased the supermodel pack and it gives you alot more options as well. But.......... reality hits and after playing straight through my 5150 tube amps I have to say the sound is thin. Still very good but you can hear the digital element. Kind of like comparing a vinyl record to a cd. No warmth and fatness. I like the fact that you have alot more sound choices but it is a compromise. I guess my ear is changing again.

Good for what it is, think I'll go back to just three or four great tube amp sounds. The love affair is over. After all, thats what modelers are trying to emulate anyway, great tube amps. Ain't nothin like the real thing baby! I will keep it though just have it around for something different.

I've probably got an unfair advantage because I've been using Multi Effects units for about 12 years, so I've gained a fair bit of experience in setting them up. Having said that, the GNX4 has taken me longer than any other unit to get to grips with. But you are rewarded with better sounds than any other unit I've used.

The easiest way to edit patches is by linking to a PC and using the Edit/Librarian facility, it's then a simple matter of turning knobs and pressing buttons on-screen. The manual is really good, but take the time to read it and try to learn just one thing at a time. My unit came with firmware version 1.2, but the upgrade to 1.3 was easily managed on-line. It is daunting to start with, but you do have a massive array of features, so it really is worth persisting, as the expression goes, you have to pay your dues!

Sound Quality : 10
I can't emphasize this enough, budget for the MFX Supermodels deluxe on top of buying the unit. I play with some picky guys and since I bought the GNX4 and spent about 2 months perfecting it for live use, all the guys in the band have said that my sound is superb. If you get the Supermodels discs you get about 1000 ready made patches, and free monthly downloads for a year, but they are set up for headphone/home use. Take the time to follow Mike's advice (he is Mr Supermodel) and tweak the setup of the patches for live use with your amp, the results are amazing. The noise gate is brilliant even with really heavy George Lynch sounds I get no his through my Laney VC30 Class A valve amp.

If you buy some compact flash cards you can store the same patches set up for recording on one, home practice on another, and live use on the unit, or have another disc with patches set up for different venues.

It is important to set your amp with a flat EQ to get the best sound out of the GNX4, and always leave the speaker compensation button switched on, it makes a real difference.

Reliability : 10
It's built like a tank, I have no worries about gigging with it. Sometimes the Edit software appears flakey, but when I analyse any problems I've had, they are usually down to something I've done and they are always simply solved. I'm not worried about back-up, but I do have an amazing collection of stompboxes if I ever needed back-up.

Customer Support : 9
I did need help to resolve a software problem and Digitech did get back to me in an hour, which I thought was really quick. But the best place for help is on the user forum (called the Sound Community). The depth of shared knowledge is really huge and other users are only too keen to share their experience and be helpful.

I did get an upgrade, but that was easy, so no worries there.

Overall Rating : 10
I mainly play classic rock in the band, but I also teach and play all kinds of styles. THe drum machine is excellent as is the on-board recorder, I haven't learnt the Pro Tools recording software yet.

Like I said before, get the Supermodels disc and there's patches, amp and cabinet models for every kind of music. I needed to create a particular artist sound and looked for a Vox AC30 model as a start point. I found I had 14 different AC30 patches in my Supermodel collection, including one which was really close to the sound I needed.

I have a Classic Strat and Gibson Les Paul standard and a Tanglewood electro acoustic all of which get played through my gigging amp, a Laney VC30. I've set the EQ flat on VC30 so I get the real benefit of the patches in all their glory along with valve warmth. I've got a long list of stompboxes including RObert Keeley modded Tubescreamer- the GNX4 renders them all redundant.

I've been playing for 32 years and the GNX4 has helped my playing more than any other single piece of gear I've owned. Buy one,buy the Supermodels disc, put some effort into learning how to use each feature, one at a time and you won't regret it and you will see your playing improve by leaps and bounds.

Excellent sounds. Firmware is 1.3. manual could be better but the Digitech forum and supermodals videos help a great deal. Editing is much easier now that I know how to work this. I've had the GNX4 for 3 months now. The model packs really add value to it.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
better than artist sounds. many are in there but the forum has many more to pick from. The models disc has tons. I like changing the model amps in the artist presets. Effects are great. The volume range is over the top. Distortions and effects are not noisy. I use the GNX with a Behringer Ep1500 power amp and a JCM halfstack. Sounds great! Without the super model pack ( I have the hard rock one) the models are okay. With the model pack, it's excellent. I'd say an 8 for Digitech models. Then add a 10 for the super model hard rock pack.

Reliability : 10
I beat this unit. I ordered the case Guitar3456 suggested. Should be here in a few days. Gigs? all the time. From practices at the warehouse to the places we play. The GNX4 holds up really well.

Customer Support : 10
Support is great. The forum dudes will answer questions. Since I have had the model pack, and even before I ordered it. I called the prosound guys that made the model pack and they helped me out more than 15 times with things I missed. Now I know. It took my pc unfreindly brain a minute to figure out the diff in the files and how to load them. I was making many dumb mistakes. Guitar3456 made me feel better. When I called them, they walked me through every single part of expression and control assigns. Since they did that, I ordered the packs. so glad I did so.

Classic Rock and cover band work. I played since I was 7. I have a whole bunch of pedals and stomp boxes I've sold since I don't need them. Mt guys are happy with my sounds. I'd buy a new GNX4 in a heartbeat. I tryed the G8, Zoom, and Pod Live. None came close to my ears. They didn't work as well with my live equipment. The GNX4 was perfect. I use the Compact flash card to record. I import tracks to Sonar. I can also go hands free but I'm used to how I do things already. Thanks to reviewers that led me to buy the GNX4 and the others that suggest superpacks. You guys are kewl

With the computer program it's OK but generally complex because of the ton of features. A week point in use is the way to handle the loop live, you will have to save setting without the metronome clicks, by default there on.

Sound Quality : 4
Some strong point in the distortion and echos. Very bad in the EQ high is awfull, very very bad on the acoustic simulation. Will give good result on mellow and average sounds but defenitively very weak if you are looking for research sounds compare even to a GT-5. Device is strong on giving ample valve simulation but not so on precise very clean and sharp sound usually they sound like plastic or even distorted clipping mess even at low output or gain.
Strongest point is the recording, sounds is very good and you can loop very long with 2gigs card.

Good at least they have service in many countries. Very expensive to repair no module inside only one main board, if something is wrong you pay a lot to have it replace...

Play a variety of music from modern Jazz to heavy wild impros, loopping stuff and doing some free experimental music, couple with a GT-5 and GR-1 and a Whammy, Marshall and Acoustic Image amps. Sound is good if you work with the strong points of it but would not do the job alone as a multi effect.

There's alot in this box and you have to be prepared read a little and play with it to get the sounds you want. The first time you plug it in, the defaults will be there to help you along, and they will do a fantastic job of showing you the capabilities. It's all easy to do, but with a little work you'll be able to make some magic of your own.
The manual is in easy read, hey, even the print is large in almost a "Dick and Jane" fashion. I would have moved the patching capabilities towards the rear of the manual, though, and started with warping sounds.
Firmware is 1.3 and no patches that I've seen.

Oh yea, the tuner! What a great tuner, easy to get to, easy to exit from, and even mutes when you use it.

The jam man is perfect for practicing to, and since I'm in a jam band, being able to let it run while stretching out ideas is fantastic. One problem though, no 3/4 rhythms.

The MP3 player is a great addition too. Hear we are practicing through headphones, and with a tap of my toe we can all hear a playback of the demo I recorded. It's the perfect practice machine

Sound Quality : 10
The best, the absolute best. I use the machine for practicing with the band through headphones, and it is the best amp simulator I've ever used. I thought I'd be stuck using a small amp and a micrphone to get a realistic sound, but this machine has it. I even used it at gigs through the PA. This was frightening, because I've never played a gig in my life without the comforting blue glow of a Fender behind me. It turned out great, more room on the stage and perfect for a three piece because now everybody can hear the guitar perfectly and hear the balance with the vocals.
Can I get my favorite artists? I'm just trying to get "my tone". I use the Blues patch, since that sounds like a Fender, and then changed the speaker simulator to sound like my much loved JBL E120, and it does sound just like it. The clean side is a blackface and it sounds like my blackface. I had to do quite a bit of tweeking to get the leslie to sound right, though. I think Yamaha had a better leslie simulator, but their amp sounds were no where close enough.

I like the Whammy pedal, and that is Digitech's claim to fame, after all. I really like that fine-tuning that can be done when you hook this machine up to a computer. I was able to have the expression pedal increase the leslie speed while also decreasing the depth at the same time. That's great flexibility that's hard to find in any effect box.

Reliability : No Opinion
I use it for practice all the time, but I've only gigged with it a few times. Nothing bad's happened, but I did have some Digitech power supplies fail on previous gadgets, so that worries me.

Customer Support : 9
They have a good website and I have had to contact the factory. It was just for a freebie offer, but they were helpful and eberything worked out perfectly.

Overall Rating : 10
Wonderful.

I never would have bought one for myself, it was a gift from my boss, (cool job, huh?) but the device has been perfect for several aspects of a musician's life. For practicing alone you have the jam man feature, for practicing as a band you have the MP3 player and amp simulator, and for performing you have all the effects and amp simulations you could ever want, all in one box. It really does it all.

I do not use the recorder or the recorder software that was bundled with it. Maybe I will in the future, but I already have a couple of digital recorders that are easier to navigate and I hate using a PC to do recording. The software for managing effects is perfect, though, and really makes tweeking easy.

Unit is easy. Editing patches is easier in the Editor than it is from the unit itself. The manual is okay but the mfxsupermodels.com site has free vids on how to use this unit to it's full capability. My version is 1.3 since its newer (4 months).

Sound Quality : 10
I use a Peavey Classic 50-50 stereo amp and a 4x12. The settings are good but better when you have Speaker Compensation switches ON. Guys that review this and say it's all digital noise did not obviously have the speaker comp switches on. I had no problem dialing in sounds. I even added the model packs from the site with those vids since I heard they were really advanced and made for the GNX4. I couldn't belive how many amps, models, artists were on there. And all are extremely good. I had to tweak a few to better fit my guitar, but that was expected since i often did the POD and Boss GT-6.

To me, with the modeling, the GNX4 effects, mainly compression is a nice touch and not noisy as my other units. This unit is quiet.

Reliability : 10
I gig with it. 4x so far and I get more people asking me what I'm using and where all those sounds are coming from. It's cool!

Customer Support : 9
haven't dealt with the Company but the forum members are great. If you realy want to know email guitar3456. he made those model packs and knows all about this unit. He talked to me 7 times before I bought the GNX4. Digitech should pay him. A couple months after I added the Hard Rock model pack and will definitely get the Ultimate Deal. You don't have to add the model packs if you don't want but i'm not an amp guru and I'd rather someone else make it. It's kind of like guys that wouldn't buy Sonar 5. Try and write that program, and see how much time it takes. The GNX4 is not as difficult or as harsh as people have said when you know HOW to use it. Free videos on that site helps. dramatically!

I play a very diverse set up. I like prog, alternative but can do other stuff. I'd buy this in a heartbeat if it were stolen. Love the unit!
I like that I know what all those functions are now. Watch a vid, boom it's on to creating the most versatile presets ever!! The GNX4 is a blessing to musicians who want to just rehearse tunes, record.. yes it's that good. Far better than Amplitube software and other less convincing. Buy one, buy the models packs is you want quick access to many amps. I shopped around with other pedals, and this one is a winner!

You can figure out some things by yourself, but it's much easier to just READ THE MANUAL! How easy...? If it were really easy 1. anybody could do it.. 2. people would b*tch about not having enough control/ability to tweak!
I just wish the presets were less of whatever they are!
I guess you have to be around a while to learn the 'less is more'
concept and DigiTech's main market is young.
So, as many have said, you gotta tweak, read, tweak.
The manual is very good.
I have ver 1.3 firmware.

Sound Quality : 9
I give it a 9 because the GNX3000 had better, more realistic amp emulation. I sampled it and only brought it back because it didn't have built-in recording- a huge plus- you don't want to have to lug and setup your laptop if you don't need to to record- you are carring enough gear as it is!

I've got more guitars than a man should have, but, I'm single with money to burn!
The Epi Les Paul Custom, the Hamer Ash SRV knock off and the Tacoma
acoustic with Fishman pickup, all sound great so far!
I played it live direct to the pa (no amp! the sound guys love that!)
I learned too late that you have to put the speaker comp on, so the rock patches were a little 'buzzy' as someone else said. But it actually sounded great on the 'Sweet Home Alabama' sounding songs we were doing.
So far I'm using good Sony headphones and a Roland micro-cube for practicing/recording. I'll use my Roland KC350 with it later.
Re Effects: I used to over use effects when I had cheap guitars and amps- less is more when it comes to effects! Like somebody else said use the amps, they sound great! Reverb's good. Delay's good.

Yes , it looks very dependable.
I plan to sell my Pod XT, maybe I'll keep my VAmp2 as a backup.

Because I play nearly every style of music except Rap, a rig like this is great- very customizable. I play contemporary worship music and classic and soft rock.
I've been playing since '66= Beatle era.
I mentioned some of my favorites above. My best favorite is a Godin
LGXSA, it's a Strat-Paul, or Les-Strat. A real tone machine.
What I don't like about the GNX4 is that the GNX3000 has better, more realistic amp emulations but no internal recording/memory capability.
Marketing! The GNX4 is still in the pipeline!
So, to answer the ?, I wish it had internal recording capability.
It definitely helps me make music.

I bought this thing as an effectsprocessor to replace my Boss GT-5. One of the great dissapointments for me was the sound. Everything about the GNX4 sounds too harsh to me and the distortioneffects are in my opinion of very poor quality. Bybass, acoustic sim and everything related to direct mode (no speaker emulation enabled) created a high pitch tone. Also the Rectifier model had a very annoying high pitch tone that makes a Rectifier sound like a 8 bits sample. The acoustic simulator only provides crackles and distortion. I was reading in some of the reviews that you should always keep the speaker compensation switch enabled but in my opinion this sounds realy bad when using a guitar amplifier. And... for this money this thing should provide value for money and should sound good over a guitar amplifier. So bottom line... I think this unit sounds realy bad and it's very hard to find a sound to my liking.

Sound Quality : 2
Once more... Sounds are too harsh, distortions are bad, output is way too high for the presets. Direct mode provides high pitch tone. Rectifier model is realy bad with a very high pitch tone.

Anyone... please don't tell me I don't know how to work with the unit. I spend 3 months every minute of all evenings to find a good sound and only could come up with a nice Twin Reverb clean sound. Everything else was a complete failure. Warping, tweaking bla bla... nonsense.... Something for this kind of money should sound decent out of the box. I also read I should but the CD's with the models... Why? If a normal musician cannot create its own sounds with it then Digitech completely missed the point.

Reliability : 8
I think it will be a reliable piece of equipment. I owned a Digitech GSP21 Legend (which I liked far more then this GNX) and it still works perfectly after 12 years. I guess this thing will last too.

Customer Support : 4
I asked questions about all issues I report here but did not get any decent answers. They told me to enable the speaker compensation switch on the back while connected to a guitaramp (straight into the FX return) to get rid of the high pitch tone. Well... this is merely filtering out what should remain. Yes... you loost the high pitch tone but you it will also such the life out of your sound.

I wish someone accidentaly would break it (but then you would need a truck to drive over it and it probably would still work) of that it would be stolen... I sold mine on the internet and bought a GT-8. This Boss GT-8 has everything the GNX4 lacks. GT-8 rules and is far more better. It does not have the features but provided the sounds you need.

Sound is great. I did use the speaker compensation switch and it was ten times better. Editing patches is fantastic. Now that I have the Supermodel pack and the vidoes on how to use this I LOVE IT! I went from a few amps to hundreds of amps to choose from. Awesome. Thanks MrG3456 at Digitech Forum. My friends cannot belive the sounds. Our rythym guitarist returned his POD for a GNX4. We're really happy now. He uses one tone and I use another so we don't have to compete!

the manual is okay but the videos at mfxsupermodels site really really help you understand the full potential of this pedal. Digitech owes this guy and I'm sure he has helped them sell a lot more of these!

My firmware is 1.3 and is current

Sound Quality : 9
Once again. It's awesome. For direct recording it is unbelievable easy to use. The sound effects are really good but once again after reviewing how the Supermodels patches and amps are setup I can easily create MY OWN SOUND. Mix a Mesa with a JCM800 and hit that warp button. Its too cool. By itself the patches are good, most kinda show off effects. The ones on the Super pack are dead on! Lynch, EVH, Yngwie, Clapton, ACDC and more.

the effects are nice but again, go to the sites and learn about how to use them. Too much is often too much.

Ive played live about 3 times since I had this. It sounds great and I think its built pretty nice. I take care of it though. Its an investment.

Customer Support : 10
Cust support I have not used for the GNX4 itself but did for Protracks stuff. I think its very good though. I have to add this though. The support on the Super models pack is superb. I emailed the service guy 4 times in one day and had responses answered in the same day. I was shocked to see the times of the responses. Must work in shifts! The Ultimate pack gives 2 yrs of upgrades. Monthly patches, more amp models, cabinets and more since last November.

Overall Rating : 9
I play almost every kind of music in a cover band and wedding band.
I've been playing for 12 years and use a JC120, DSL live. I would for sure buy this again. At first I thought the stuff on here was complicated. Watch the public and free videos at the supermodels site. Learn all about your pedal and take advantage of all those control assigns and extras the manual does not expand upon.

I compared this to POD XTL and took the POD back. The GNX4 has so much more to offer and the modeling packs really sold me. My friend has a POD XT PRO which I like but he liked the GNX4 and Supermodels much better than his precious rack baby! I can record a song so fast and jam to it in less time than it takes most people to hook a mic or guitar to their computer. I don't have to lose ideas on paper. Arm the track and voila !

last thing to add. hmmm Get the Supermodels packs. You will not be able to see your family. Over 1000 models and patches along with over 180 artist presets that will make your jaw drop. I love Jeff Beck sound and another one that super models nailed. So many dozens of amp manuf folders containing many amps made by the mfg. the models are really that good! I add a slight mix to our PA sys and pan for effects spacing and it sounds awesome! A MUST HAVE ! The difference is night and day! The videos, GNX instruction, usage text, will have you finding tones you never dreamed of having.

Overall I give a 9. Add the Super Model pack and it's a 10++++++++

Easy of Use No Biggie and then again .... !

Patch Ediing is something I learn next but am not intimidated .

Like most manuals it isn't enough but it's good enough . Aside from my nephew's & my manual coming apart after re re re reading the stuff in it I guess any paper back magazine time manual will show signs of use ( like al my other music books , they look thoroughly used )

I'm lucky since the latest firmware update is already in my unit , my nephew's is not bujt wikth my computor I will up load it since he has no p . c .

Sound Quality : 10
I am and always will be a tube man at heart

- but -

This unit makes you rethink it . I know it sounds really rightous when plugged into a super clean P .A . I have a ( pairs ) folder horn with a 15" speaker and a pair of Altec Lansing horns hoioked to 400 watts of power amp ( I have other P. A. amps with more power but this is my big gun over all for most rooms )

As for settings :

As I have read and experienced , yoyu have to " tweak " the settings to get what you want out of them , God help you if your a newbie and don't have a clue on amp & cab sounds :(:

With a Strat , a Godin LGXSA & my Washburn D46SCE acoustic electric and a little Hondo nylon I get my nut playing my ass off . For recording the Washburn & nylon I am saving up to get a good mic , but Washburn direct to a mixer and then into my GNX4 works smoothly and nicely . The Godin & /Strat kill plane and simply put .

As far as effects & aviable stomp's

- WOW -

They get nothing put praises form all who have listened to myself & my nephew on his as we fire off on our units together , man a pair side by side izzz trully a killer set up to behold . What I lack in speed my nephew cooks on , what he lacks in experience for grace , smoooooveness and just tasties stuff well , that's where this man comes in to the picture :)

My nephew has customized a whole bunch of new patches and I'm doing that to mine now and will make custom patches for harps too . All these user presets we make can iether go into the users presets in the GNX4 or the CF card .

Reliability : 10
Looks like even if it failed it would be a terrific boat anchor ! Wow is this thing built like the proverbial brick - - - house :) I would gig with out a second one personally as Digitech has a track record of great performances night after night with out fail .

Customer Support : 10
So far I pestered the holy @#i& out of Harmnon Kardon ( that's who owns this company and if you know HK stuff well you know they put out a quality product now for years and years ) before I bought one , I called and called asking questions about the GNX3 first and glad I did because I know I would not have liked one for my playing / recording applications .

I worked in a high end audio service and repair many years fixing stuff like the very best you could buy in audio electronics from Reel to Reels MaCIntosh tuners , pre amps & poewr amps , Yanaha under warranty ( they were super tough to get approved as a indipendant qualified service center like MaCIntosh ) , as I recall Digitech alwasy sent parts for repairs in a timely manner so yeah I trust Digitech .

Overall Rating : 10
I izz eclectic as caviar & peanut butter & jam . Sushi & Mexican Food , and my music is as varied . I play Blues , Jazz , Rock ( and it's many flavors one of which is one is " Rock-A-Billy " , I work and record with Chan Romero a real Rock-A-Billy legend ) , Country Western , Boleros , Hawaiian , and even some Portuguese stuff out of Brazil .

I blow harp ( blues harmonica to those who don't know the real name for a 10 hole diatonic harmonica :) since 1954 & I'm 55 :) I also play drums , trumpet , keyboard & guitar too . This unit has so much potentional for the guitar right (??) also as a modleing amp for Blues harp poses a real potential as well so yeah it's a marriage made in high fedelity harp & guitar heaven fo diz dude .

I have alarms & 2 guard dogs ...... No one better try and rip this off ! If it somehow sprouted new legs and walked off I would buy another as fast as I could , maybe the next generation one :)

With 8 tracks to use as a recorder , and the stand alone midi drummer it's a deal , throw in the stomp box's & modeling potentials plus an USB interface to your computor that lets you also use it for midi importing and exporting to the CF card ( like jpgs & other stuff a GNX4 doesn't read it self ) , a MP3 player , midi & songs storage as well as edit your amp & cabinet models along with song editing , it's a no brainer .

I compared TonelabSE , M-Box ( Black Box @$200.00 ) & a few other garden variety stomp box's , digital recorders , & nothing came close for universality quality & price .

Whish you could slow down the MP3's you load in the CF card , that would be super dooper . With a software program ( it comes with mac & p . c . ) or other stand alone learn a lick type you can do this although it's the " long way around the mountain " if you get my drift .

I thought out a similar unit for computor based recording in the 70's , and it came out back then and I wasn't able to afford it . Now 36 years later ....it's here and it's afordable in the GNX4!

I knew a unit like what I thought of would allow the music that's slamming and bumping about the insides of my skull to be not only let out but archived , my time is now ! This is the really big reason for the purchase , I wanted a recording device , it could have been a Tascam D88 DAT 8 channel recorder if I could have afforded it , now with this unit it goes way out and above a D88 DAT or a ADAT or what ever single type recording console with out modeling amps & cabs or the FX of the GNX4.

This unit is THE unit ( bottom line entry state of the art digital musicians workstation ) for the 21st century performer(s) .

For the negative posts I have read here on this unit ( and not many to be truthful :) , it's apparent that some were just popping off to hear themselves and more than likely did not ever own one of these bad boys . Only a blind , deaf , and speachless person would not find the genius in a GNX4 waiting to pop out like a genie in a bottle .

All you need to make this work is this :

# 1 : A electric and or an electric acoustic guitar with the appropiate cables & stuff .

# 2 : A nice power amp and or P . A .

# 3 : 2 healthy arms & hands & 10 fingers ( although Django didn't let a little problem like missing fingers on his left chording hand a biggie ..

# 4 : Ears & eyes that work reasonalbly well .

# 5 : The ability to read and comprehend .

# 6 : An unquenchable desire to play music and also write music too .

# 7 : Dedication to practice ( you know who you are ) .

Following through with all the above will make it an experience to remember !

I be seeing ya'll somewhere along to ole sound scape horizon partners Yeeee haaaaaaaa !

I have had a GNX4 for a wee and a half now. As a family man my time and expenses are limited. The sales guys at the brand new guitar center in Appleton really didn't have a clue about what this thing is or really anything else they sold. They were nice guys but not technically up to the products. Now I'm a mechanical engineer with a real thirst for knowledge and study the SH*$ out of everything. I spent a lot of time on the internet. Every detail must be worked out. I am also one of the cheapest people you would ever meet.

It took a while to figure out the presents and warping features. Maybe half an hour to an hour between the manual and my three little kids.

There is a great tutorial at gutarworkstation.com and an available power users manual written by the same guy.

Pro Tracks is a complex program with a lot of capability. It has more features than I will probably ever use but I am going to try. The help menu is OK but could be better. I bet the keyboard guys at the guitar center could help with problems more thatn the guitar guys.

The user community is great.

Sound Quality : 9
I use decent Sony headphones. My amp is a P.O.S. but will play the sound. I plan on getting some powered monitors and hooking directly to the GNX4. I do not play out. This is just a fun toy.

It took me a few days to realize there is a button on the back that acts as a high frequncy filter. If you don't like the sound turn this on.

Everybody is right, the presets aren't the best. Thank god you can put 80 of your own in. Again the on-line community has added a lot to the web. Also the gutar magazines are posting their pre-sets. it takes about 2 minutes to find, download, and add to the unit. Use this feature.

The drum kits aren't the greatest but they are good. I found that I can download midi files fromthe internet, import into PTP and they work. Good time saver.

There is a guitar to bass preset. Not that good at all. My brother plays bass. I'll try his soon.

This thing looks like it is built to last.

I haven't tried digitech per se but ther website links to users. There are a lot of knowledgible people out there.

I had probelms with X edit. I had to update the software and actually download a .dll file and insert it into the directory. Simple enough to do if you can use a computer. GNX4.org again helped. I'll have to send that guy a donation.

Overall Rating : 10
I mostly play rock. This unit will play everything.

I have played for 22 years. I don't have much gear. My favorite guitare is an 89 strat plus. Nicest strat I have ever played. I am going to sell the rest of my effects because I don't need them anymore.

I would buy this again if it were stolen.

I looked really hard at the Line6 Toneport and M-Audio Black Box. What drove me to the GNX4 was the software pro tracks plus. The other units come with relly limited recording like 4-tracks and some midi. Looking at the total cost of another unit and software AND mic inputs AND ability to use live set me straight. The GNX3000 is also a great unit if I knew more about it I may have gone that way. There is a website like gnx4.org that will help explain the differences. I wish I knew it was there before I bought this. I think I'll keep the GNX4 and not switch.

I wish there was better documentaqtion for the Pro Tracks plus. I wish it had the capability of using a midi bass like it does for the drums.

I have lost the drivers a couple of times when powering off and on at night. I just reload and it works again.

For an idiot like myself, the learning curve was not too bad. I must admit that I got stumped and had to search the manual many times before I figured the whole groove out. Then again. I have been told that I have adult A.D.D.... Oh look! A chicken! Uh, what were we talking about?

Sound Quality : 10
I use the GNX4 primarily with a very nice set of studio reference headphones, and the world's best custom hand made guitars. Kids; do not try the GNX4 at home through your amp without reading the manual front to back at least twice. If you have heard about tones that "suck" then you can almost guarantee that they were heard through an amp with the "speaker compensation" switch set wrong, and the signal path all messed up. The effects in general ~are~ somewhat unrefined right out of the box, but can be incredibly easily tweaked with Xedit and a computer. The knobs and controls on the unit are not very hard to use either. I sat down with it, and downloaded about a hundred patches from the internet, slapped them into the GNX4, and jammed away in under a half an hour.
The amount of control you have over any particular sound patch is nearly limitless, and you can save, change, morph, and warp sounds until your eyes fall out.

can't speak to durability, as it hasn't given me any problems. It is very well made though.

Great match for any style of music, as there are literally limitless tones available to make as you wish! I have been playing for about 30 years, and have had all sorts of gear. This is without a doubt the Bombzilla of all time all effects pedals. Awesome. If it were stolen, I would hunt the muthafu(#3r that stole it down and kill him with my bare hands, and then eat his heart before it stopped beating. If I had to buy it again, I would sell my left nut to get the cash. (Well, I AM passionate if nothing else...)
Best pedal out there. I could not think of anything else I would like this unit to do, except maybe dispense 20's?
As to making music, I have not been this inspired since I bought "Desiree", my black Charvel Strat 20 years ago. I feel like a guitar god. Throw in all the recording ability, and the excellent software, and you can't lose. The drum machine supposedly rivals a stand alone unit, but I beg to differ. I ~have~ a stand alone unit. The stand-alone Roland I own is crap compared with the versatility of the unit in the GNX4. What they don't tell you is that not only can you play patterns off of the web on the GNX, but Protracks has an INCREDIBLE drum track editor right in it! The actual drum sounds could use some love on some of the kits, but the rock kit is pretty darned close to real sounding. As to "looking for the chips" as they say, good luck. I didn't really believe the drums 100%. They always sounded like a drum machine to me. To the unit's credit though, I feel the same way about my stand alone drum machine, which cost more than the entire GNX4 and all the accessories. Anyway, I can't easily be fooled by any machine.
I have only had this machine for a bit less than a week, but I have gained the confidence to set down some demo tracks, which to me, sound almost as good as the stuff you go out and buy on CD. With some time, I am certain that I will put together an entire solo album just for fun. Does it compare with the audio quality that you could get in a $2000.00 per hour studio? Fu(# no. Then again, the whole rig with nice set of headphones, and an AKG studio quality mic cost way less than half that much.

I bought this initially for my Studio. I play Les Pauls, Wolfgangs, 1 Ibanez, JSX w/XXX cab, Cybertwin w/412 cab, Mesa combo. I own a Pod XT Live, Tonelabs SE, GT-8, GT-pro, Zoom gfx-5. Why? Different tones for different stuff. They all have a strong and weak point.

But honestly, this is a great pedal. Let's face it, Digitech has done a great job knocking down the competition in regards to all out rock & roll pedals. I'm talking grunge, metal, crunch and just plain solid rock & roll.

It has very usable effect for live or studio, but if I don't like an effect sound out of it, I'll just plug in an effect I do like (loop it) and mute the one on the pedal. That's simple use of the human brain to attain the tone you are looking for. We've beome a lazy music generation in regards to tone.

Did someone forget to teach the fact that "tone" comes from the hands and mind of a guitar player. His gear does not "make" his tone.
So if you can't get any good tones from this pedal...take some lessons. :)

I play mostly Christian Rock and worship. It does a nice job especially for heavier rock parts and records direct into a console nicely...very heavy sound.
I've been playing for over 35 years. 20 professionally.
I would buy another one if this one was stolen.

I love the tones in this for rock stuff. Also has some cool delay stuff. Favorite feature is the drum machine for just flat jammin' out with headphones and then you can record it with the built in recorder..how cool is that?
It doesn't compare to the PodXTL or the others I own as it is it's own creation.
I think it is equipped with what it needs and no more...this will help you make music and won't get in the way.

NICE JOB DIGITECH. YOUR PRODUCT IS FLAT AWESOME.

It comes, stock, with factory presets that are fun to play, but you'll want to edit them to get your sound.

It's a lot easier than I thought it'd be. Once I figured out how it works, I was editing All the presets and having a blast.

The manual is great! I like trying to figure things out on my own and when I get into trouble... go to the book. I flipped right to the page and my questions were answered quickly.

There are downloadable presets from users on the web page. That's great! You can go to their forum and get help right away. A great group of people ready to give their advise. For all of the above reasons I give it a 10+.

I use Gibson Les Paul Humbuckers, Les Paul P90s, Fender Clapton Strat, Strat with texas specials. For amps, I use a 1971 Marshall Super Lead 100 with matching 4x12 (vintage 30s) and a Fender 1965 Twin Reverb. It is dead quiet. It makes the sounds that it is supposed to and nothing else. I'm the one that makes all the nasty noises. I connected it to some JBL G2 powered cabinets in stereo. MAN!!! That is the sound! I was amased! Great separation for the effects and a big full sound just like wearing studio headphones. Clear, Clean and Big.

I play both kinds of music. Country AND Western. JK

I've played in Metal, Disco, Show Bands, Country, Bluegrass, Blues, Classic Rock and Grunge bands steadily since about 1968. I like veriety. I like em all. uh... I don't do rap. (no disrespect)

I own old vintage pedals from the 60s... Fuzzfaces, LPB1, LPB2, Vox wahs, Big Muffs, Ibanez, MXR scripts, Boss, I've built many of my own over the years ... every Fulltone made to date(Mike does a good job) Heck! I don't know what all I have in there.

I don't know if I'd buy it again... I probably would because I travel and pack it in my luggage. I have my Les Paul with me now. That's the real reason I bought it. I can sit in my room with some good headphones on and record riffs... good drum machine. I even have a SM-57 microphone to sing into.

I've been trying out guitar effects since the 60s and don't imagine I'll ever stop. I hit every music store I see and try everything I can get my hands on until they kick me out. I chose this one because it's a very well built machine and does more than any of the others I've tried and Digitech does it the best. I hook it up to my laptop with the, provided software, and record tracks and manipulate loops and create songs to burn to CD... before I know it, it's time to go to work the next day! It's addicting. I didn't get the extra footswitch (for recording). I wish I had. I'm going to see if I can get one when I get back. I'm in the Persian Gulf right now and am Very glad I have it with me. If you're like me and need everything in one package, this would be a good buy. Now let me say this... It's, probably not going to take the place of a big pro recording studio... The effects are better than any of the other new processors, but it is very convincing sounding if you don't have a world class studio to compare. I have no doubt that it'll do very well playing live.

You may need to buy a big ol CF card for recording. I bought a 1 Gig.

Good Luck, if you're planning to buy. I'm happy with mine.

Firstly, this product is not for those who are even remotely technophobic. If you are used to plugging in to your favorite amp and turing two knobs, if you are not prepared to read manuals, consider something else.

The GNX4 gives you control over EVERYTHING. Absolutely everything. There is no way you can have both control as well as ease of use. The tuning of the cabinet, the crossover between the woofer and the tweeter in the rotary speaker, the properties of the room that you reverb is caused by and i know i'm forgetting something. Digitech has done a brilliant job of making such control in a fairly easy to use package.

Editing patches is easy once you get used to the layout.
Manual is great - covers everything (its also about 3/4 of an inch thick)
What is best is the ease of which you can create backing tracks good enough to perform with.
Recommend you have a computer that is suitable too, because you miss out on a lot if you dont.

Sound Quality : 10
I am using the GNX4 with a Gibson SG and:
a) a marshall 30 watt 1x10
b) headphones
c) A poweramp and a quad

however it would sound best thru a neutral sounding PA

It has the best noise gate i've come across, so it is quiet as a mouse.

As the GNX4 does what you tell it to do, the tweaking is up to you. You need to know what you want, how to make the sound you want. Once you know this and make you patch, it is comparable to the amp that it is modelling.

A refresing change is that the GNX4 encourages you to create your signature sound by combining the characteristics of two amps of your choice.

Quite quickly i created the tones for my fav artists: Iron Maiden, Metallica U2 Led Zepplin etc.
What is best is that there is a forum that you can ask for help of any kind and people have posted their patched there.

Everything is as good as you can get except maybe the Talker is not as good as a traditionall talkbox, and pitch shifting in very high shift amounts (- 2 oct, + 2 oct).

Reliability : 10
Right. You could easily kill someone with this. It is made out of 3.5 mm thick sheet metal and is solid as a rock. It weighs alot which is good so it doesnt slide around. There is now way you could break it at a gig except if someone smashed the knobs deliberatly or if you stepped on the screen/knobs with your full weight. It is very solid but i recommend a hardcase ( i made one myself)

I have gigged with it twice, rehearsed many times. It has water splashed on it and it was fine.

Yes, i would not consider a backup.

Customer Support : 9
Hanvnt contacted the company, havnt needed to.

The best resource for ANY question or ANY advice is the guitar workstation forums. There are over 700 members that are all users of guitar workstations, many whome are very knoledgabe. Any questions, go there.

I play rock, metal, blues. The GNX4 can do everything - it suits me perfectly.
Playing for 6 years, relevant gear: a strat, SG, a quad, 2x12, poweramp and little practise amp.

If it were stolen or lost i would be very sad and make myself happy by buying it again.
I love everything about it, especially the fact that you can backup/organise patches on you computer so you can customise if for each gig.
I always shop around and i did for this as well. The GNX4is the ONLY product that has everything you need in one unit for a good price.

I wish it had...un.... maybe another expression pedal, but since each control footswitch can control up to 3 parameters at once there is really no need,

It helps heaps with creativity as you can record your ideas and hear them later and improves soloing because you can play to backing tracks.

Ignore 1 ratings. These people are either idiots, cant play guitar, have no idea with technology, or have no ear for tone.
Any questions email me. PS no i do not work for digitech.

I find it interesting that those who rate this product poorly in sound also rate it as very hard to use. I think we have a correlation here. If you can't figure out how to use it it's pretty unlikely that you will be able to get a decent sound out of it since the presets are worthless.
It is fairly complicated to learn in depth because it does a great many things. If you aren't willing to put in some time buy something simpler. If you are then you can get some amazing results.

Sound Quality : 9
The presets suck, plain and simple. I could not find a single one that was worth using out of the box. I had an RP-1 a decade ago when I decided to move from stomp boxes to multi effects, then an RP-20 before buying the GNX4. I have never used a standard Digitech preset on any of them. It seems Digitech's philosophy in creating them is to demo the various effects rather than make useful sounds. This is fine by me as I have developoed some pretty picky tastes after 30 years of playing and would change them regardless.

When you really get comfortable programming this machine you can get almost any sound you want. The pickup simulator is great at getting my '69 LP deluxe to sound like a Strat for SRV and Jimi stuff. I have gotten some good sounds for Ozzy, VH, and Zep, too. I look forward to getting some presets made for my Ovation doubleneck as well. It will be a while before I get everything I want out of it but I am quite confident it is there.

Reliability : 10
As I mentioned above I have had an RP-1 and RP-20 bofore this. They lived through hundreds of gigs without a problem. I have no reason to believe this one won't do the same.

I play mostly blues and classic (hard) rock with a little jazz and acoustic thrown in. I have been playing for around 30 years.

So far it exceeds my expectations. I bought it mostly for the onboard recording capabilities. I have been doing PC recording since Cakewalk first introduced their Pro Audio product but a PC isn't easy to take on the road. I used to have a Fostex x-15 4 track for portable riff recording but it bit the dust and I wanted a replacement. The GNX does what I want in that area.

What I also got was the capability of getting great sounds without hooking up my amps. This was not expected and a pleasant surprise.

This unit requires you to read the manual! Once you figure it out you'll be amazed at the sounds this thing can produce.

Sound Quality : 10
With a Strat or Les Paul, killer tone can be had with this unit. You just have to be patient and learn how to tweak it. I get great SRV tones with the Strat, and humbuckers will take you to Gary Moore land. Check the website for some great patches. The effects and recorder are awesome once you learn how to use them. People who trashed this thing in their reviews did not take the time to learn how to tweak it.

Reliability : 8
Digitech equipment from my experience has been dependable. I'd gig without a spare.

Customer Support : 9
I had a chorus unit fail on me years back and they replaced it with a new one with no hassle at all.

Overall Rating : 10
I play blues and classic rock and this unit is extremely versatile. The recorder is relatively easy to use and very cool.I would have to hunt down the miserable lowlife that would steal this from me!

Hey i spent hours reading reveiws, forums, comments, userguides, and anything else i could find on this product. I spend 3 weeks (at least 14 hours) looking up stuff. I also have owned a RP400. but when i got it, i was had no clue what to do, i got the drum machine working and the preset thing, but most evaded me. I bought it anyway first day wasn't so excitind, but now its awsome. i can do so much!

My opinion and general consesus is that this product may be a bit imtimidating but read the manual and its easy!

Sound Quality : 10
Once again, most people agree that the preset suck. they arn't that horid but they load it up too much at time. If your not looking to customize get something else, but for anyone who is willing to spend 5 minutes to tweek or create, you won't find a better one!

A problem which i think most people who have posted the ones, for sound is probably cause of their amp. Not saying the amp is bad, but most likely your mixing tones, anyhow the point being is that you have too change your eq, and get a flat tone from the amp. or you could disable amp modeling and cabinets to get your amp sound. Go on the forums and they help you.

YOU MUST GET HEADPHONES. it soundsss sooo sweet!! my tube amp sounded decent on it, and the Marshal Stack sounded better, but you need some good headphones, it blows me away.
using amps on this sometimes doesn't work too well because of the mixing amps, it still sunds awsome but there is more potential to unlock, you could also get some GOOD speakers to get it sounding this sweet.

Reliability : 9
Yeah its reliable, and generally the only complaint is for the plastic knobs which might break. Also i came across someone who commented its hard to play in bright light as you cannot see the display. but all electronic pedals are like that eh?

Customer Support : No Opinion
i have had it for less then a week, and i obsess over it. i have spent.... 22 hours on it in the last 4 days. no problems yet, although the computer bit gave me greife for a bit, had to read the manual a couple times.

Overall Rating : 10
its awsome, a bit steep but i'm willing to play for it, it has crazy effects, a great amp modler, Awsome drum machine! and the best acustic sim ever! (also has bass models which rock)

if you can afford it. buy it! but don' get rid of it when you cant understand everything the first day. if i unloacked everything the first day, i would be disappointed. i pay 700 bucks there better be enough bells and whistles to confuse me for a few weeks!I
If you have any question email me! plese do

This product is amazing, very easy to use and I can't believe that most of the reviews are negative. This pedal is fantastic for metal and very easy to modify your presets.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using a line 6 spider 210. You don't really need a gnx4 with this amp but it makes your sound so much better. The effects are amazing and I've been able to get metallica distortion (Black Album)
Anyone who can't do this doesn't understand this workstation. Alot of people who have negative comments about the pedal have only had it for a day or so and I believe that there opinion is extremely bias. It takes about a year to learn this pedal inside outso start readind the manual before you judge. The only problem is that the rectified preset has way to much treble, you really have to take the time to get the sound you like!!!!!

Reliability : 9
Very reliable, I've already done three shows with this pedal and my sound is juice. What's really fascinating is that you can have 5 different channels to chose from but the downer is that those 5 channels have to be within the gnx4 preset banks.

Customer Support : 8
I never had to get it repaired but the x-edit program gave me some problems and screwed up my computer but that's my fault, I didn't read the caution warnings in the manual, so a note to everyone, read it will help!!!!!!

Overall Rating : 10
I play a weird blend of death/progressive/thrash metal, along the lines of Children of Bodom and Lamb of God. The pedal is fantastic for this style of music. It is also amazing for Classical which I play alot, like Bach and Paganini. I've been playing for about 10 years; but seriously playing for 6 years, in the sense of playing disciplined guitar. If it were stolen or lost I would wait to get a newer model of the gnx. I love the IPS on the pedal as well as the delay options. I hate the fact that the presets are set in banks that you can't move around, ex. preset: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (This is gnx set up) but I would like ex. preset: 26, 51, 55, 79, 80. Line 6 has a great variety of amazing pedals but I've always used digitech and it's easy and very convenient. I wish it had a larger amount of drums patterns that change frquently rather than always keeping the same beat. It is amazing for creating music, every preset has something to offer.

i have had my GNX4 for 1 1/2 years now and it is very easy to use now. Not that it took me that long to learn, I just know it inside and out. Now obviously there are people out there who really know how to tweak this thing really well. Very easy to get a killer tone out of it. I run it into the effects returns into the various amps(tube, and solid state) that I own and it just amazes me every time. I borrowed a disc from a friend of mine that was ordered from mfx supermodels and wow! They sound great! I get really killer tones that just blow people away every time I play. So many amps to choose from and they sound like the real thing. Fully tweakable like the real amps. The amp models are accurate to a tee. I cannot tell the difference between my cranked tube amps( marshall, Peavey, Boogie, Fender etc...I own many amps-god bless e-bay!) from some of the modeled amps. still firmware 1

Sound Quality : 9
I have a ton of amps now that I use with it. Music man and peavey guitars. Ampeg, fender , marshall, 5150,Boogie, and a few others. I use them as power amps for this thing. It's guitar heaven. All effects still sound good to me after all this time. the speaker and poweramp combination is very important just as it is with other preamps that are out there. Its basically a super modded preamp with all the bells and whistles. I find myself not using that many effects to better get the feel of a real amp situation. Just guitar cord and straight dry tone, the best way to play in my opinion. no effects to hide behind. Kind of forces you to play better. If you are always wishing you had every amp you have ever heard or wish you had kept every amp you have ever owned(like the rest of us gearheads) then get one of these and a few of those discs and you will be satisfied for quite some time. I have cured my tube snob freinds for life even though I still own them. Nice to have both. All in all the GNX4 is a fabulous machine. I have heard rumors of a newer more advanced version on the horizon(GNX5?) so we will see how that will sound.

Reliability : 9
It has a scratchy volume knob now but that is the only thing that is wrong with it so far.

Great unit. I play blues, Metal- old and the newer extreme "nu metal". hard rock( Zep, EVH, etc..) and most guitar based rock and music in general. The unit will do it all. And you can record as well. I have made many a disc and other players and the general public all think they sound great. Learn how to play and have a ball with this unit. You just cant stop playing once you turn it on.

The folks at Digitech did a really good job at providing GOOD documentation for the unit. There's lots of it, too. The GNX4 takes a little while to grasp ALL of its features/capabilites (and there ARE lots of them.

The hands-free recording feature is really incredible especially through the PC with Pro Tracks. I say that because, for ex., using Cubase is a pain in the ass to set up to record one track. This thing does it in a second. Recording to the onboard recorder is extremely easy. I am using the GNXFC extra foot switch, BTW.

Sound Quality : 10
I don't know where some people are coming off saying the sound quality isn't there. I found good results even with the presets. I don't use any heavily distorted stuff, though, so I can't speak to that. I mean, I was just p*ssing around with one random preset (Mo Slide) and got excellent tone from it using a PRS Santana.

I was looking for a unit that would allow me to record easily and the GNX4 foots the bill. I had a GNX3 at one time and a scaled back Digitech multi-effects pedal (RP-something) as well. I remember getting some interesting sounds from both the units and had used them for recording in the past.

There's a fair amount of capability in this thing from the USB connect feature, the excellent drum machine, the myriad of I/O options (only thing missing is a digital I/O), the routing flexibility, the expression pedal features, the additional footswitch option, the Pro Tracks, et al software, the excellent effects and amp modeling. There's nothing on the market that can touch it, IMHO. Ceratinly not for the current going rate of $499 (I bought a Factory Resealed unit from AMS for $459).

So far, I am extremely pleased with the GNX4 and this is from someone who's an equipment junkie. I've owned, at one time, almost every significant piece of guitar-related effects gear.

So far it has been impossible to get a good sound out of this thing. Everything is buzzy, a bee in a tin can. No depth, very thin sounding. Editing is a breeze. The manual is very thourough. So what if editing is a breeze...the thing still sounds horrible. Plus there was no media card to record with. They don't tell ya that little tidbit of news.

Used this with single coil, double coil, direct thru a PA, headphones, direct into the poser section of a guitar amp and thru the normal input jack with the same results. Bad, bad, bad sounds.

If this was lost or stolen I would count it a blessing. I hate EVERYTHING about this unit. Thank goodness I didn't spend a fortune on it. This is absolutely the WORST sounding effects pedal I have ever heard.

easy enough. I have an Xtl so this is actually easier. I prefer the menu grid with knobs over a tiny lcd.

Sound Quality : 10
when i bought it, it was like my Xtl..fizzy. So I asked the guys at the Sound Community over at Digitech and they said turn the speaker compensation button on. What a difference! I have an X100 combo tube212 and this thing rocks. Then I heard about the superseries discs for this and figured 47 bucks, why not. Don't know what the differences are but soundwise they are the best I have ever heard in a multieffect unit. I paid for the amp model discs from Line 6 and they were okay but this disc has ten times the amp models. From Engl, Krank, Diezl, Marshall, Mesa, Randall, Peavey and let me add the XXX, and 5150 amp models are awesome! IF you are thinking of a GNX4, you have to get the super seris disc!

The ease of use really depends on your ability to use computers. The unit itself i'd say would be terribly hard to use without hte help of the computer based preset editor.

Sound Quality : 10
Many ppl have disputed the capabilities this unit on hte grounds that they can not achieve any decent tones on it. To some extent i can understand why ppl would take this view. The factory preset on this thing is a total crock of shit, and i am being generous in saying this. This thing can produce killer tones and the range of tones it can achieve is truly endless for any style of music.... blues jazz rock etc, but only providing you have time to really sit down to produce em. Alternatively you can use presets made by other guitarist at sound community.

Reliability : 10
High quality build. My only criticism are the plastic pedals. Although i do believe they are of a high quality, i would much prefer then to be made of steel. Apart from that it is very reliable.. i have giged with it and it hasnt let me down

Its true sound better and surely u'll play better. the recorder is really handy for composition work. the expression pedal can be assigned to do pretty much anything ... increase volume increases decreases gain treble bass wateva .... wah pedal too . its been designed with the guitarist in mind. Not too bad, many said otherwise but if you know how to work the editor it's easy. The unit itself works real simple and I like the mode options best.

Sound Quality : 10
Tell ya one thing, this thing rocks!! I went to the Digitech Forum first before I bought it, They told ne to get it and try it. They also said they haven't heard anything until they heard one of the Comm guys that makes custom models with the editor. So I tried them out got the gnx4 and downloaded the Guitar3456 ( sound comm member) patches and OMG what a difference..the pedal is way better than before. He has patches of models and artists that are not on the GNX4 but man they should be. So I go to Guitar Center here and they tell me yeah, they know all about him. They alsao said Digitech and him are making a disc of 350 amp models. Whoooa I said. He said, yes, it's true. They played me the recent Hendrix patches and SRV patches and a Krank Revolution patch and I could not believe my ears. So now that I have these I'm going nuts wondering when they are releasing this CD of patches and custom models.I can't wait. My friend and guitarist from my band bought a POD Xt live and as soon as he heard my GNX4 he took his POD back and bought a GNX4. The GNX sounds awesome through our Blue Voodoos and a PA. Awsome! Ohhh the patches by this G3456 guy are online at the GNX4 Sound Community and there are Mp3's of these Supermodels so check them out.

Reliability : 10
Built like a mack truck. No problems. I would and have been using it live.

Customer Support : 9
Support, well if they do this CD of supermodels I'll be in amp heaven so I give it a nine

Overall Rating : 10
This is awesome for any type of sound situation. The main sounds are great it's not noisy and it really sounds 10x better with the Supermodels by the so called "gnx guru" Guitar3456. All I can say to any who are skeptics, buy one, load this guys patches on there ( not the factory ones are bad) but with these other patches it simply cannot be beat in sound quality. Go to the Digitech website and the Sound Community and search "models to come" But overall even with the regular stuff in here it's an awesome sounding and really cool feature packed guitarists dream with the Recorder, Mp3 player, Looper, you name it. I love this thing ( moreso with the new patches)

I think most of the negative reviews are from the old school guitarists- this thing is truly outstanding. I am using a stereo setup, which is not that difficult to do- i even tried out a 200w bass amp with one output, and a guitar amp on the other output. You must tweak the settings to get good sound!!- From one amp to another i found i had to change paremeters to get good sounds. The stereo hookup really made a difference. Editing patches was a breeze- i sit at my computer with a long cord going over to my amp, i edit the presets on my computer- which is hooked up to the gnx4- and get instant gratification, i can make adjustments real time as i am playing. I can warp a fender tweed with a marshall stack and use the expression peddle to warp from one to the other amp- or leave it somewhere between the two, and the mix is very accurate. Certainly it will not replace a marshall or a fender, but i dont have to spent 10grand to buy all that gear. I can say that the drum machine , combined with recording help greatly when practicing, helps get the creative juices flowing. Ill pick a drum track- add a wandering bass line, throw a few rythm chords in, and practice my leads, you just cant beat it as a practice tool. There is no other product on the market that comes close, preety good drum machine, very good amp models, excellent effects- fairly realistic to the originals.

Sound Quality : 9
I am using a stereo setup, NON TUBE- my tube amp colors the sound, im using a 2x12 crate solid state amp. Great sound. There is almost no noise with my solid state amp. Im lazy- i usually download the presets from the digitech website- then modify them slightly to get the sound i want. Can you imagine having 10 or more pedals hooked up in front of you and try to get a good sound out of it! It takes time to get the settings correct, but once you do - save it and its there for you for next time.

Reliability : 10
its steel and heavy, i treat it nice though, i have a gnx3 also for a backup

Customer Support : 10
On there website they have a forum- ask and you shall recieve. There is a whole community of people using the gnx products. The forums have employees helping out on a daily basis. Very foreward thinking.

I play classic rock, a bit of alternative--I have 2 stacks(marshall- soldano), that i love- cant beat that tube sound. Been playing for 20 yrs. I f stolen id buy another, cant do without it now. Grwar for learning new songs, just put the mp3 onto your memory card, it plays through the same amp your guitar sound comes out of- record it as you practice- play it back to see how you are doing. Have a difficult fast lead to learn- this thing will slow down tha fast parts and play ot back on a loop.

The manual is easy to read and understand BUT most people feel they can operate this without reading the manual and get frustrated. You need to learn a few things first and the rest is easy.

Sound Quality : 10
Excellent sound quality. The sound models of the different musicians were dead on for all but one of them (my opinion). The sound models of the different amps were on and this was compared side by side with the same guitars and the modelled amp. The Whammy was on the money and this is a $200 effect alone. The EVH, Satriani, Eric Johnson, Brian May, Pat Martino, Angus Yound and Stevie Ray Vaughan (early Stevie) were dead on. Not much noise at all. Even the modelling for the different Bass types was amazingly accurate. The gain is smooth when transitioning and the effects were pretty good - I normally use BOSS pedals. Overall great sound quality and versatility BUT remember, YOU MUST READ THE MANUAL!!!

Reliability : 9
Excellent with the memory card for backup rythyms and drums. Takes time and the manual to record with the 8 track recorder. It is an excellent storage device of sounds for the stage. Both my friends use it in medium size venues throughout the Southeast - Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Venues from large clubs to College auditoriums.

Customer Support : 9
I only called once and the guy was a representative who performed demos and was very helpful. Haven't needed anything else.

Overall Rating : 10
This is a versatile and powerful processor and tool. With a little work you can record background tracks for any small to medium venue and become a One-man band. I would recommend at least 1 Gig of memory for the memory card. Not very difficult to use once you read the manual - MANY PEOPLE DON'T GO THROUGH THE MANUAL AND THEN GET FRUSTRATED they can't work it the way they want to. Amazing piece of machinery that can easily be a backup or substitute for up to 6 pedals - anymore is probably useless or not practical. The price of $500 new was well worth it since the individual components will run you about $1,600 separately. At least try it at the store or let someone demo it for you - you won't be disappointed.

It took me a total of around 2 hours of tweaking before I could get a decent tone out of it, but I KNOW MY WAY AROUND DIGITAL EFFECTS. I can lay down block diagrams for almost any effect, explain how they work and what the parameters do, so bear in mind that I have it easier than most folks. Having said that, if you're familiar with tube amps, compressors, delays, modulation effects, etc. you'll probably be allright. Just to give you an idea, I was running the GN4 through headphones, and something was missing. I though "it the emulation was perfect, all I'm missing is the AIR (and ambience) between the sound source and my ears". So there I added ambient reverb and damn! Got an excellent tone!!

Sound Quality : 9
I used a Fender Deluxe V-Neck Strat, through the GNX4 and Sennheiser HD 265 headphones (it's crucial to use good quality headphones). After tweaking on it for a while I realized the potential of this unit is enormous and for the price the sound quality is astonishing. Really. Don't get fooled by the factory patches, they suck big time. Also when you give it a try, run it either good quality headphones or a decent FULL RANGE PA SETUP, and don't forget to turn speaker compensation ON. If possible, download the manual from the Digitech website and read it so you can tweak the GNX4 knowing what you're doing when you try it on a store.

On to the effects:
The pickup simulator may be useful, doesn't sound bad at all - the only reason I don't use it is that I like to keep my signal chain as short as possible.

The compressor is surprisingly good for a unit in this price range and actually very usable. More parameters than most units in this class too, and sounds like it's supposed to.

The whammy and IPS... well, I don't see a use for those except playing RATM and Iron Maiden covers, pitch shift is more useful and detune is essential, and a good one at that. Quality on higher interval shifts is what I'd expect from a unit in this price range - no better, no worse.

The stompbox emulation is nice; at least the TS9 one - I don't really know the others all that well, however the DS1 emulation doesn't sound too faithful.

Modulation effects are actually better than my Lexicon and Rocktron units - at least for my taste. Better suited for guitar and really rich sounding, specially with the compressor engaged. I was able to dial in a VERY NICE clean chorus patch in a few minutes, worth the price paid for the GNX alone.

Delay and reverb are not top notch but I really don't need studio quality time-based effects for guitar work. Honorable mentions for the ducking feature and Studio reverb though, I tend to take these things for granted but some units stink at them, not being the case with the GNX.

The drum machine sounds like real drums and, in one word is INSPIRING - what more can one expect? No cheesy drum patterns, the guys at Digitech took the trouble of coming up with USABLE drum patterns, unlike the cheap organ ones.

On the cabinet emulation feature; it's not a surprise to see how Digitech has evolved in that department, having been one of the pioneers at speaker emulation technology. The cabinets sound more realistic than I expected, and interestingly the types I like best are the ones I currently own (1x12 and 2x12).

I play rock, pop and some hair metal, been playing for 25 years. My current live setup is a Mesa/Boogie Triaxis (with V2 replaced with a GE 5751 for LESS gain) in parallel with a Marshall JMP-1; the signal is split and fed to both inputs; each preamp has its own effects processor (Rocktron Intellifex for the Triaxis and Lexicon MPX-1 for the JMP-1), and then both are mixed together and fed to a Laney VC-100 combo. So you see, I'm kinda demanding when it comes to guitar tone, and believe me, the GNX4 is much more than I had expected. To be very honest, I bought it just as a practice tool, but it sounds so good and my current setup is so heavy I'm having serious thoughts about using it live. At least for rehearsals it's my official setup as of yesterday!

If it were stolen I would either buy another one right away or wait to see if they come up with a GNX5, if I could wait for it which I sauppose I wouldn't.

What I love in the GNX4 is that I can get very, very close to my actual lead tone wearing headphones, and that's a lot!!! BTW, it's the Triaxis on the Lead 2 gren mode (Mark IIC I think), with just a little delay and that's it.

I didn't compare it to Pod, V-Amp or anything and I don't have to; neither of those has all the features I need (drum machine, recording and MP3 player), so since the tone is there, I don't need to look any further, case closed.

I found it hard to get a good sound out of it. This is in contrast to my DG-Stomp which pretty much sounds like a good tube amp right out of the box. All the presets sounded too bassy for my taste and I found it hard to get just the right amount of treble bite without it sounding thin or harsh. There are a lot of parameters on this thing to edit though, so I would not say that I could never get the sound I wanted out of it, I just gave up before I did. This is after almost a year of working with it. The editing iteself is quite easy though. I really like the endless rotary knobs they put on this thing. Just for the record I like clean and clear tones like fender and vox and then I like to use stompboxes to get different distortion sounds. BTW the stomp box modeler on this thing is quite cool, one of the best features I'd say. A lot of them really did remind me of the real thing. This is in contrast to the amps.

Not noisy. The effects are okay if somewhat uninspiring. Like I said above the stopbox modeling is quite cool and very useful as I could set this up as I do my live rig. Speaking of which, I tried using this thing as advertized, for live use, for recording and for practicing. I first gave up on the live aspect as there was too much - for lack of a better term - high-end funkyness. I've noticed this also with my DG-Stomp when used live. I suspect it has something to do with digital modeling. I really wanted it to work, it just didn't for my needs. I kept recording with it until recently when I decided to sell it because it would not interface corretly with the recording software I wanted to use it with over usb. Oh yeah, the looper is very hard to get good loops with, however the internal recording is really cool for capturing those inspired moments without missing a beat. That and the stomp box modeling are what I would say are the coolest things about this gadget.

I didn't have any problems and I was planning on gigging with it without a backup.

I play a lot of different styles and I have been playing for 16 years. If you like bright clean amp tones you may find it hard to get the sound you are after with this thing. Like I said above, you can tweak the hell out of it though, so I would never say you will never find the sound you are after. I guess I just like gear that sounds great right away, like my DG-Stomp. The stompbox modeling was cool, so was the whammy and the internal recording feature. Its a great idea whos time I am sure will come. I guess depending on how picky you are this may or may not work for some or all of your needs as a guitarist. I found that unfortunately for me it worked for none.

Different but not too bad once you understand the controls. Can be frustrating but I rarely need the manual anymore.

Sound Quality : 9
Mostly ASAT's, some P-90 hollow bodies and a LP Classic. No more noise for gain setting than any other box.

Pretty decent compared to POD XT Pro. Not as much "FIZZ" and ghost notes with OD tones. Love that! With the right live monitor setup it's 98% of what a great amp can do.

Reliability : 8
Seems good for the past 2 months.

The rep guy took good care of me when DT offered a pedal promotion. Glad I got that pedal too.

Nothing as awful as Line6 support that's for sure!

Overall Rating : 10
Everything along with acoustic guitar which the GNX4 handles very well too. Of course, turn off all amp/speaker sim for that duty. High gain, lo-gain OD, chicken pickin', surf stuff, I need it all and this does it with little BS compared to POD XT Pro.

'Been in the biz for almost 30 years. I make my living with guitar so if it sucks it won't stay with me for long. This doesn't suck and it combines the right amount of features that are actually useful for my work. Practice, Record, Perform is what is sez on the box and that's exactly what it does!

Had two XT Pro's but down to one after getting the GNX4. Probably gonna sell the other XT Pro now that GNX4 has stepped-up to the plate and I'd like to have another. Sure, the POD XT DSP engine is probably "better" and so is the tuner but it's the WHOLE GNX4 package that's superior for me when compared to POD XT.

Goodbye FIZZ, ghost notes and Line6 forum gods! See you at the Grammy's playing my GNX4!

O.K., I've not had my GNX for for too long, but I must say that from the moment I turned it on and plugged in my Gibson Studio and Marshall MG100dfx I was utterly blown away. I don't understand the reviews that have said it is difficult to use straight out of the box, I did this with no problems, however I do realise that I'm not even beginning to scratch the surface. The manual is quite Techy and it doesn't really flow like it should. However, I love playing around with things just to see what they do and that's something that you can do to your hearts content with the GNX4.

Editing patches couldn't be easier with the X-Edit software for the PC. The plethora of sounds available is simply staggering.

My unit came pre-loaded with 1.3 firmware and so far seems bug free.

Still getting used to the unit at the moment and sometimes when I've done a particular task, I can't remember how and it's difficult to replicate it.

Sound Quality : 9
I Have a Gibson Les Paul Studio (platinum) and a Marshall MG100DFX. So far I haven't experienced many problems with undue noise. The Accoustic preset was a little hissy, however, a bit of tweaking here and there and I seem to have eliminated that particular snake.

So far I am still having too much fun mucking around with it to give a definitive answer on sound quality, what I will say is that it seems to give me almost exactly the sound I'm looking for. If it doesn't, then tweaking will get me there.

Reliability : 10
Not had it long, it is built like a proverbial brick S**t-house though. Strong and sturdy, easy to read display and easy to access functions.

I play all styles of music, and have been doing so for only 2-3 years yet (hey I'm a late developer, I didn't pick up a guitar until I was 31). So my views may not be as detailed as the more seasoned players on here.

I also have the Tascam CD-GT1 and the Line 6 Guitar Port, both I have had tremendous use out of. However, the on-board recording function and the excellent drum machine will make this a far better jamming instrument. The mp3 playback facility also means that this is an excellent tutoring piece of kit as well.

So far I have knocked out three tunes on it I must say, that it was very easy to do. The Pro-Tracks software provided made it easy to mix the tracks and I'm very happy with the end result - the only problem is my playing, but I'll continue to work on that.

I think that the GNX4 will work out to be worth it's weight in platinum, in time. At the moment I am just spitting in the sea, I can't wait until the time when I'm in the guts of the thing, really finding out what it can do for me.

Ease of Use : 8
Easy to use out of the box for the most commonly used features - totally intuitive to me with KNOBS. I'm not guitar tech whiz, but I figured out how to use everything except the 8-track within 10 minutes, INCLUDING the tweaking of effects on the board.

Gets more confusing when trying to setup the computer interface. It's actually not difficult at all, but I suspect here's where people seem to get "totally overwhelmed." Protracks is a great program, but if you're new to sequencing and pro audio, it'll blow you away at first - yet to its credit, it's one of the simpler programs out there in my opinion.

Editing patches is GREAT with X-edit at the computer. Doing some things, like effect editing is remarkably even easier on the unit itself due to the many knobs, but for true tone beauty, you MUST used the X-edit WARP features to combine amps. Even more importantly, you should be ready to download patches from the free digitech site; a fellow named Guitar3456 has created patches that are incredibly useful.

Sound Quality : No Opinion
It's been said over and over, but I completely agree with the verdict:

Presets are terribly disappointing. I don't use ANY of them except for the "simulated bass", and I usually go right ahead and use factory presets on most pedalboards without much tweaking. I've owned other pedal boards in the past, and usually at least a few of the patches are really done well; in this case, I would have to say that all of my "favorite" download patches are SO much better than the factory presets that the conclusion is that they've done a subpar job on the presets.

But on the GNX4 - it's a WORLD of difference. In looking for an Eric Johnson sound, I was sadly disappointed in the "SOLO" or "SMOOTH" presets and couldn't seem to improve them with effects. However, after downloading somebody else's models which incorporated the EQ, amp WARPING, and better effects, it's like a completely new unit! This thing sounds as 95% as good as EJ's Dumble amps, and that's thru headphones! (Download the patch on Digitech.com)

This thing sounds great recorded direct via USB. The website has great sample songs - some of them are recorded improperly and sound crappy since the levels were too low, but most of the newer ones are done correctly and you get a sense of how a lot of people are getting this to sound.

I Love the drive on this thing - has a very unique sustain type overdrive that's remarkably clean yet very slightly crunchy for a tubelike solo drive. Of course, it's got all of Digitech's monster metal/grunge distortions as well.

Make no doubt about it - this thing can do ALL amps and sounds, in stereo, with awesome effects. If you want to create your own monster tones, I've found that you need to understand this unit at least at the level of "warping" amps together and distinguishing how a plate vs a hall reverb can make a critical difference between a bluesy versus metal sound. Fortunately, you don't need an engineering degree or a complicated book of music theory to achieve this - but you do need the time and the desire to mess with the incredible depth that's the GNX4.

Sound quality by me with my expertise and downloadable patches - easily 9-9.5 (I don't do 10 - that's for PERFECTION!)

Sound quality by the average tester who walks into a store and plugs right into the presets = 5.0. It's totally unimpressive and digital right out of the box. I'm not making this up - it's remakably disappointing for such a great unit.

Reliability : No Opinion
Can't comment yet - just got it.

The hardware seems to work great and is housed in rugged steel.

My only complaint is with the USB computer drivers - while 100% reliable once they're up and running, they seem to occasionally disappear. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if it's a conflict with my other software. (This sort of stuff is really common for USB PC stuff, not unique to Digitech.)

Customer Support : 8
The company actually monitors the user discussion forum and even released a short-term retroactive promotion to give us new buyers the chance to buy the extra foot controller at a steep discount. Seems to show initiative!

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I play EVERYTHING, and favorite artists are Eric Johnson, SRV, Vai, DiMeola. I am a fairly accomplished guitar player, so I am also quite discriminating in my sounds and hardware performance.

I've managed to make Spot-on patches that sound 95% like the original artists, and are utterly convincing when recorded in their own right. What's even more amazing is that I don't even change guitars to get these sounds - the GNX4 can switch between them and even make my $150 Ibanez guitar sing or scream like it's a million dollars.

HIGHLY recommended. The 8-track is amazingly easy to use and I use it a lot. Computer hookup is a huge plus, and the awesome user forum with patches makes it a practically limitless unit. (Check out patches by Guitar3456 - they ROCK!)

This box takes a lot of bad publicity because most people expect plug and play. Not so with the GNX4. It is intended for folks creating music using their own presets. 90% of the presets available is not suited for immediate use. Also, another problem with this unit is that to achive other modes, you must step on two buttons simultaneously. Unless you are a complete flatfoot, this is extremely difficult, especially during live performances.

Sound Quality : 8
I am using an american made strat using Dr.Z Carmen Ghia tube amp. I've been playing for over 30 years. The sound quality of my strat and tube combination is of course to my liking. Connecting the GNX4 to my tube amp gave me ok results. I bought the GNX4 because of it's drums, bass, and amp modeling, with the intention of creating songs and backing music. Not being to impressed with the GNX4 sound quality, I decided to try it on my wife's live karaoke system. She's using a Yamaha full stereo powered mixer (EMX 88s)with two 500 watts 15 inch speakers and horns (S115 IVS)including 2 400 watts montors.
I found that by using her full range speaker system, the sound achieved was pretty awesome (after trials and errors). The drums sounded very very good, but the guitar and bass took some time to find that sweet tone. Don't expect to get 100% real tube amplification. For live usage it's pretty close considering all that background noise. Also, when creating your presets, make sure it sounds good at different volume levels. This box is very quiet with the noise gate turned on. The effects sounds best in stereo.

Reliability : 8
Everyting is metal with the exeption of the foot switches. I'm not to crazy with plastic for foot switches, but time will show. Also, the knobs are not protected with a step bar, so you have to be careful when using this box on a dimmed stage.

This is a fairly easy unit to use - if you're just going to use presets or the drum machine. But it is a very deep unit. Tweeking the sounds out of it will take a lot of time. The more that you work with it, the mnore you get out of it.

Well...the presets suck.

I'll say that right up front.

X-edit is a very cool feature. Don't waste time trying to edit sounds on the unit itself. Using X-edit on a mac I'm able to tweak the sounds a lot and get things that are useable.

It does not sound AS good as a $3000 tube amp. It's digital. You can get very Useable sounds if you make your own patches. For me -I asked do I want to lug 20 pedals, a rack mount looper and an amp to a coffee house gig, Or 1 pedal board and a powered speaker?

Again. I hated the presets. I tried this unit in Guitar center and walked out hating it. Then I saw the loop and USB functions and thought that I'd give it a try.

The WARP function is critical to a useable tone. Being able to put 2 different types of amps together into somethign useable is very cool!

This unit is totally solid.

If that's worth $500 to you, buy the unit.

Guitar rig sounds better, I am not willing to buy a top of the line G4 laptop, the guitar rig software and controller and bring it to a smokey bar to get beer spilled on it.

If you do looping or onboard recording - plan on spending another $35 for the extra floorboard and plan on spengin another 40-80 bucks on a flash card. (1 gig gets 3+ hours of recording time I believe)

I'm recording new tracks and all of the guitars are going through this thing.

I had to go to the manual a lot to figure out how to use the different functions. It's not the most user friendly board in the world, but then again, it has so many features built into such a small package that you really don't expect it to be user friendly. Overall, it wasn't too bad to program or to use the recorder or drum machine.

I don't know where else to put this info so I'll just stick it here:
The recording feature is cool, but you have to have a huge memory card (at least 256 MB) if you want to record a whole song with more than one track. A 4 minute song with 8 tracks would probably take up a whole 256mb card. The USB thing worked good, but I would recommend getting a different pedalboard for a better sound, and getting a different USB soundcard (like one of the new alesis ones - they're cheap) and it would be a lot easier to use.

Sound Quality : 3
The effects are cool, but in the end the sound just flat out sucks. It sounds like the RP-10 (15 years old now). I would have thought that after 15 more years of research and development they would have figured out how to get a better tone, but it comes out more thin than any other board I know of. I'd jam with guys who had cheap $100 (Korg, Boss, and Zoom boards) boards and the effects sounded more full and "real" than mine did. When the final sound comes out, it sounds whispy and fake. I tried for months to make it sound better, but nothing worked. My poor experience with the GNX4 lead me to give up digital effects altogether. I've sold everything and picked up a bunch of analog pedals now. I'm very happy with their tone, but I do miss having programmed effects that I can access anytime. The other complaint I have about this board is that there is a delay when you switch between effects. It's brief; but that is still completely unacceptable from a processor at this price.

So I sent to a dealer and had them fix it. THEY told me that the CPU was version 1.1 and they upgraded it to version 1.3 and sent it back. So i power it up, plug in and start rockin' when vola, it crashes again. So long story short I am sending it back and getting my money back.

Ease of use is all relative to how much time you want to put into learning how to use this sophisticated piece of equipment. I read folks who complain that this is not very easy to use, but my suspicion is that they just haven't put in much time in learning the device. This is NOT a simple machine, and for that reason you should expect to put some time into learning how to use it right. After all, you probably put in hour after hour learning the instrument, so why not put in a little more time learning the tricky stuff that goes along with it.

Overall the GNX4 is VERY good at what it does. The layout is pretty intuitive, but you still must take some time to learn how things work together.

The manual is well written for a technical piece. The information is straight forward and fairly focused. You won't be able to just breeze through it, but then again for something this good who'd expect it to read like a comic book?

Overall ease of use is a 10 ... for a very complicated piece of equipment. Want easy ... stick with an accoustic. Want sounds out the wazoo with lots of control and tweakability then go for something that takes some work to master.

Sound Quality : 10
This is an amazing box with near perfect sound. I know, some of the perfectionist out there will say that it "sounds different" from the original [insert item here]. Duh! It is different. The "sound" that most of us are looking for is usually an accident anyway, so recreating it is not easy.

Overall the setup is very good and it will emulate most popular amp and stomp boxes pretty well. I especially like the WAH for its overall sound, though I would not say it is a perfect duplicate of the original WAH pedals of the 70s or so.

Other effects and sounds are very good. Short of having all these different amps and effects behing me ... something that would likely cost more than my 5 bedroom hourse ... the GNX4 is about the only way to go.

I actually use the GNX4 with three amps. The first is a Peavey Bandit that I've had for 15 years. The second is a Fender Blues amp that I got from an old guitarist who had it since the 60s. It's really old and fragile, so I am careful when I play through it. The other is a new Marshall that I am actually thinking of giving to my son. I'll likely buy a new Fender and use it with the GNX4 full time.

So far I've been able to get the sound of just about everyone I wanted to sound like. I play a lot of classic rock and blues, so the sounds can vary a great deal from one song to the next. I might play The Who one song then Clapton then Skynard then who knows ... but each time I usually set up the GNX4 to fit right along with whatever set we're playing. It's never let me down!!

Reliability : 10
I've had my GNX4 for over a year. I would NOT give it up. I had a POD 2.0 as well, but sold it finally because I just never used it. I then bought the Line 6 POD XT Live, but traded it to a friend after just 1 week. The POD XT Live just does NOT compare to what I can do with my GNX4.

I use the GNX4 all the time on gigs and have had zero problems. It is very reliable. I won't go anywhere that I'm playing electric without it.

Customer Support : 10
I've only dealt with DigiTech once, but not on the GNX4. It was on another piece that I actually bought used. I could not get the thing to work right, so I called DigiTech. They were very helpful, especially considering I was not the original owner. They gave me all the help I needed and I'm very happy with their work.

Overall Rating : 10
I play lots of classic rock, blues, some jazz, and very little country (only when my bandmates won't say NO to the babes in the audience). The GNX4 has been a very good match. I know exactly where I need to go for each song or type of music we're going to play. IN fact, I've gotten to a point where I can doodle on it while my mates do work on their equipment or between setups for different songs. As an example, I use some of the far out effects to just make noise ... well melodic noise ... while our bass player switches from a 4 string standup to a 5 string electric at one point. This box gives me a lot of versatility for just jamming and still sounding great!

I've played off and on for over 20 years, but only seriously for about the last 2 years. I'm not a great player, but the GNX4 sure makes me sound a lot better. In fact, one of the reasons I love the box is that it makes me sound a LOT better than I actually am.

If it were ever stolen I would track down the crack-head and cut his [insert your favorite body part here] off before taking my GNX4 back. Well, actually I'd probably just get pissed and curse a lot, but I love the GNX4 so much that I would like to think that I would take out evil pain on anyone who stole it. Of course I'd buy another immediately.

As I noted, I have played with other emulators and modelers and the GNX4 is superior to anything else I've played. Funny, though, that's like saying a Gibson is better than a Fender or a PRS. I own both a Les Paul Studio and Fender Strat (along with a Epiphone Sheraton), and may soon buy a PRS, and the GREAT thing is that they all sound beautiful on the GNX4.

before i bought the GNX4 i read some of these reviews and i started to get a little worried. Alot of the reviews mention that it's so hard to setup and the manual is unbearable and too technical..etc...

First of all, i have to say that the people who were complaining about the complexity of the GNX must have absolutely no patience at all... i say that because all u have to do is read 1 page and your ready to go, and turning a knob to scroll thru the 80 presets doesn't sound like brain surgery...

In any case, reading thru the manual is good practice anyway, its only 50 or so pages.

I recommend reading the amp/cab setups, hypermodelling, GNX matrix, and saving amps and patches. If you take a look thru some guitar mags at the GNX "tones behind the tunes" stuff you should be able to pick up the basic GNX functionality pretty quickly.

Even just going thru the factory presets has given me a massive inspiration boost.

Sound Quality : 9
i think this unit is amazing! my setup is: Epi g400 deluxe / GNX4 / Marshall MG15CD - the gnx sounds awesome, plugged into the line input, i can control the tone directly out of the gnx. The sound quality is great, and if it wasn't i could tweak it to be what i expect anyway!

The factory tones are good as is. But the GNX lets u modify and tweak every aspect of the tone anyways.

The unit is digital, so obviously when u setup something like the acoustic patch it's not going to sound 100% like an acoustic guitar, but it's pretty darn close (with a few tweaks)

Once u setup your custom array of foot switches, you can just keep playing...

I'm going to give it a 9 because you cannot completely 100% emulate the original.

Reliability : No Opinion
well, i haven't had it for very long.. but it seems like it's made really well.. it's really solid.

In the beginning i thought the expression pedal had some problem, it was creaking and a bit jerky, but it was just getting itself worn in, now it rocks and moves like... silk or something.... the point is, it's nice and smooth now.

BUt i haven't had it for all that long, so i cannot give a factual opinion.

patches from the website downloaded easy enough into the gnx. the software is easy to use, backups and restores are easy too. the gnx firmware is currently up to date, so i haven't had a chance to do taht yet.

the gnx4 has too many features to list and then on top of that u can modify basically everything. it makes me sound awesome.. and really.. i'm not that good. :P

I have played around with a few pedals before and although it is a very complicated pedal, the interface is quite intuitive (with the exception of amp modelling). I didnt get around to using the software as I was concerned about using this ON STAGE only at this point.

The manual is very good, editing patched is easy too.

The BIG problem I had with this unit is getting a great sound out of it... see the next section for more info

Unfortunately i didnt get around to the recorder because i took it back... so the score does not apply to the recorder obvoiusly

I'm using a Maton Mastersound MS2000DX into a Marshall AVT2000 150 Combo. One thing i like about my amp is that it sounds really good for the price i paid for it. It seems though that the GNX4 was NOT built to be run through an amp!!! I cannot get a good sound out of it when it is plugged into my amp. I EQed the hell out of it and tried every possible setup combination and still it sounded like crap. And it sounds VERY digital.
The effects are adequate but there is no autowah. why? u put an autoya in which is the worst effect i have ever heard in my life.

one more thing that ticked me off the most: THERE IS A DELAY BETWEEN PATCHES!!! ARGHHH it is unuseable for gigging.

Unfortunately i didnt get around to the recorder because i took it back... so the score does not apply to the recorder obvoiusly

one more thing again..... the sound doesnt come out very clear... there is not very much clarity in the high end notes when u play thoruh some of the distortion patches... it wopuld be good for power chord metal but not if u want to play nice big bar chords... the sound doesnt break up very well.

i play a lot of different stuff but mainly rock. ORIGINAL material. the problem with this is that it is really really versatile for cover bands, but if ure in an original band dont make the same mistake i made. best thing to do is focus on your tone.

and ive been playing for about 5 yrs now so im not a beginner, (although not an expert either). but i DO know what sounds good and this just doenst.

it wont get stolen cause i took it back.

I love the versatility of it and the recorder is supposed to be awesome. I hate the sound it puts out through my amp, and i hate the patches and i hate the delay between patches and i hate that there is no autowah but an autoYa to add salt to the wound. I hate how it makes everything sound so digital and how each note refuses to break up so it sounds a bit muffled and did i mention really digital? My fave feature would have been the um.... im not really sure.

i compared it to the boss gt-10 and i didnt really like that either. but one good thing about the boss is that there is no discernible delay between patching, unlike the gnx4.

for some reason i wish it had an autowah. just for completion i guess.

it didnt helpo me make music unfortunately. it got in the way. it was very dis-heartening.

the bottom line is that beware about the limitations in this machine when it comes to gigging. it just doesnt cut it. im gonna save up for a new amp instead which is what i should have done all along. now for the digitech lovers out there i dont mean any offence in knocking your machine but the point of this review is to point out the limitations about the macine that i wasnt aware of until i bought it.

anyway... happy belated easter :)

what can i say the gnx4 is not so easy to use but this unit is not just another all in one noise maker and I have had many of them that are. if you read the book that comes with it and jump in and play around with this unit its not that hard to get the sounds you are looking for. But you have to push and turn some buttons and knobs oh boy!!! hey at least you wont get bord with the gnx4

Sound Quality : 10
Im giving this unit a 10 because once you learn how to tweak in the presets and buld you own sounds with this unit, the gnx4 sounds great"" so much so that Its had to beleave this only cost me $500 bucks and the gnx4 sounds very close to my high end stomp boxs very close. there is no noise and i love that, I have read here that the fx sound thin and have no life to them? I found this to be true the first time i recorded with the gnx4 to my pc it sounded very thin and the high gain fx sounded like a kazoo, and i was like whats up with this!! I found that if the master vol is turned down to low it will sound this way, same goes for the record out vol but now it sounds great.

Reliability : 10
bult like a tank"" but i never gig without a backup I have had the gnx4 for 6-7 months now and have never turned it off unless im moving the unit some where and have had no problems with it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have not needed them yet.

Overall Rating : 10
I play any thing that come to mind and have not not found any type of music I could not play with the gnx4. but its not perfect nothing is when it comes to sound, everyone has there own tast, but if you like having every thing you need in one box this is for you, but if you do not like to spend time tweaking in your sounds DONT BUY A GNX4 '

You can use this right out of the box, but to fully appreciate it's features, you really need to spend some time with it. That's not a bad thing, becuase you'll soon discover that the possibilities are extensive. Very extensive.
The controls are intuitive.
The Digitech website has many user presets, so you'll have a huge head start in dialing in your tone. The best part of it is that it's all free.
Patch editing is accomplished through the unit itself or through a computer with the X-Edit software. X-Edit is the way to go, since you have so much more control. It's very easy to use.
The online tutorials greatly supplement the user handbook. There's a lot to learn, but they've done a great job explaining things to the layman.
This review is based on firmware version 1.3.

Sound Quality : 10
I play my PRS CE-24, homebuilt Strat with EMGs, Fender Jazz Bass, Takamine 12-string, Ovation Elite, and an old synth through the GNX to BX8 studio monitors. The GNX handles them all well. I've heard that vocal processing works well too, but I haven't tried that out personally.
Amp warping is a great feature that's very useful. This really is one of the keys to the sound flexibility that this unit offers. You can have a lot of fun mixing amp combinations.
Digitech really loaded this thing up with a huge effect library. All of them sound great (in my opinion) and the expression pedal lets you control them in very unique ways that you can't with a stompbox. For instance, I have my expression pedal set up so that it controls the amount of gain. You can program the expression pedal to control just about any parameter that you want. Delay setting, flange speed, etc. If you let your imagination run wild, you can really get some sounds that will make people wonder. This feature alone gives great value to the GNX as your main effects unit. There's even a guitar-to-bass simulator that's usable, but could use some tweaking.
The recording software is fantastic, much better than the onboard recorder. The onboard recorder can handle up to 8 tracks. Two tracks at a time are used for stereo. The recording software allows you to record up to 32 stereo tracks.
The drum machine is very convincing and programmable with the computer software. There are many preset patterns that you can instantly use, but if you're composing, you basically have a drummer equipped with many kits available.

Reliability : 10
This thing is built with a solid metal casing. I've only owned this unit for seven months, but it's been very reliable and it gets a lot of mileage.
I would definitely gig without a backup, but with my luck, that's when something is going to happen. Based on my use with it so far, I wouldn't have any concerns.

Customer Support : 10
The customer support is top-notch. If you have questions, the user forums will get you almost instant answers. There's a great bunch of people there. Digitech reps are also there, so you also have access to official tech support. The Digitech reps also respond to users requests. I'm really impressed with the level of support that I get with this machine. For me, it's unprecedented. All of this support is free. They're still working on updates for the machine and the tutorials.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall, the GNX4 presents an unbelievable value. I bought it before the price drop and I still feel that the unit is worth more. Forget the fact that you would have to pay so much more for the competitors products if you want all of the features. As a stand-alone multi-effects processor/modeler, this thing is top-notch. Of course with any of these machines, you have to tweak it to your personal preferences. I don't know of any manufacturers factory presets being perfect.
There's a lot in this box that's waiting to be discovered. I'm still amazed at all of the options that I haven't even tapped into.
Digitech has really won me over.
I play acoustic, metal, jazz, blues, ambient, folk, classical, reggae, ska, etc. Basically anything that catches my ear. It's good to know that the GNX has the versatility to handle it all.
I've been playing for 25 years.
If anything happened to it, I'd run out and buy another without hesitation. It's so enjoyable to use that I find myself playing and composing with any free time that I get.

Once you read the manual and watch the FREE TUTORIALS provided at the digitech site, it's very easy to use. This is a very versatile piece of gear and the Software Editor is one of the best I have ever seen. Other Mfg's have fixed models. GNX4 gives you the capability to create unlimited amounts of your own custom presets. There are over 900 presets available for FREE at the site. The manual is great information. You have to read it. I also recommend buying the GNX4 Power Users Guide to explain things by example. Factory presets are there to identify the possibilities. The users at the Digitech site have refined many of them and they are very realistic. The Drum machine is very clean, samples are very pleasing. The Protrax software lets you make your own drum and midi files to use on a CF card (another awesome feature). The recording capability is versatile and LEXICON included SW plugin adds clarity and brilliance to the sound. Firmware upgrades are FREE ! No chips to change, just plug in the USB and go for it.

Sound Quality : 10
Sounds are fantastic and realistic. It's a multieffect so you have to tweak. Speaker compensation switches help even out the sound through a PA or powered monitors. I use a LP, Ec-1000, Prs Tremonti and the GNX4 screams great sound. Live I have stereo Xlr's to PA, one 1/4" R ch to monitor system (in ear), and the L ch to a Mesa 90/90 w4x12. Presets are balanced and soundguys love this sound. Another example of the GNX4 versatility. Distortions are plentiful and chimey/with sustain (again, check out the 900+ patches).Dozens of cabinet models are available and very accurate. Once you get familiar with this unit and download the other models, the sky is the limit. The effects are even and quiet. The noise gate is very subtle at the threshold and there are multiple types to choose from. The pickup simualator is clean and can make a Les Paul sound like a Strat. To top that off you get cabinet tuning features on both ch's. You then save them as a custom cabinet and build your patches to taste. NICE !! Now for recording...44.1 CD quality sound. You can save as Wav, Mp3 for additional editing. Midi playback, User editable drums with two SW versions of drum and Midi file options. There is a basic drum editor and an advanced editor. You get to pick. Dozens of high quality kits, unlike previous models. Multiple AD convertors and a much faster processor yield fantastic results. Start with the basic drum creator, then move on to the larger version with gobs of percussion to choose from. Believe me, there are some unexplored reviews on this, unfair at best. The users' posted song demo's and presets will clarify your questions. If you didn't get a pleasing sound, you have done something wrong. Download the manual, go to the Digitech Community forum and ask away. Then judge for yourself. Not to differ from other products..compare and see. You'll find the GNX4 more than versatile, more than pleasing, and hard to stop using. I have suggested this to many students and other musicians that have heard or gave the unit a quick test, then tried it again. Now they own them and love it. As a sound professional/tech/acoustician, and musician myself, this unit has the GUTS and will out-perform at any level, it's competition to date. You simply have to do a little more than take it around the block.

Reliability : 10
Reliability...absolutely. I know. I work on Digitech/ Roland/ L6 etc as a tech. The GNX4 is a solid build. The case is solid steel. Jacks have braced/recessed connectors on the boards, and are balanced to reduce noise. Switches are high quality and PC boards are thicker than others. Completely dependable. I have gigged with it dozens of times since 04'. Not a problem whatsoever. I did buy a second one when the price drop hit. Now I have one for studio and Live. I never buy low quality gear much less a second one!

Customer Support : 10
Support- YES, YES, and YES. Lets see, email and phone support. They have been frinedly and have responded promptly. Digitech reps constantly giving feedback in the Digitech community forum. Free Tutorials from renowned specialist/writer Craig Anderton. I am there as well as many other seasoned users of the GNX4. We'll help support others and get them rolling asap.

Overall Rating : 10
Metal, Country, Jazz, Alt, Rock. The Gnx4 suits all of these in my band. Musician for 25 years. Tech for 20, Acoustician for 11 years. I also own a GS-10, had L6..shrill, less features( pay for modeling CD's of older presets! who's idea was that??). Live- Mesa Tube power amps 50/50 and Simul 90/90 w 4x12 Celestion cab. Full Pa and Home Studio equipment. Bang for your buck is an understatement here. I know personally how much went into this unit. Amp models are great. Don't let factory presets fool you. Get one and try it over a weekend. Feel free to post questions at Digitech Sound Community and you will also find answers there. I have never given such a long review but I had to clarify the many negatives since they are subjective to users patience and limited test drives. Most people that own this have sorted out things in a short time. The GNX4 is a highly advanced piece of gear...professionally speaking. I woudn't hesitate to buy another... hmmm I already did ! Favorite feature-hmmm all are useful and I'd say the Editor, Sware, USB, and the ability to utilize Compact Flash, Multiple control switches for complex arrangements. I compared this to all Line 6, Roland Gt-6/ Gt-8, Korg, and Zoom. None came close ! I wish it had reverse cue on Mp3 playback..but was informed Digitech is now working on those and other features in a future FREE firmware upgrade. I've been constantly playing more and more and more. Recording, Creating Presets, dissecting this thing!! Since I play more I guess I go out less, and have more money to spend. Is that bad??? All I will say is to give this unit a fair test. Buy one, try it out. Most vendores have 30 day return policies..you'll know by then. It will take time to get by the basic curve. Most that have shunned this have gone back to it and kept the GNX4. It is the benchmark for multieffects units in my eyes/ears. Judge for Yourself and I'll see you in the community forum.

VERY<VERY<VERY difficult to operate and understand.not very intuitive like I would have expected.Iexpect when I spend 500 dollers for it to be intuitive and ineractual, and the sales people at gc and sam ash dont know anything about the product, and craig andertons book sucks, its just as confussing as the owners manuel.

The sound was ok on some of the digital distortions, but overall I am very dissapointed with this unit, none of the clean channels have any zip or zadoda, and the tone is very simply thin, and transparent. Now before you think I am running this through bad equitment here is what I have....top of the line gorilla 75 hurrenberg and an ibenez 470 custom wallybanger with tip-toli pickups and can cans.To all the guys who cant tell the difference of good quality stuff and not, this is not good when it comes to tone, you are better off buying a pocket zoom or a korg pandora when it comes to truely awsome tone and ease of use.

Visually the layout looks great, but I had a hard time navigating around. Others might find it easy, but I can say I've used easir matrixes. Certain items cannot be used simultaneously on the same row
which is a bummer. Fx cannot be rearranged. This ia bummer for something like a wah pedal. No fx loop either

Abilty to switch from stomp box to program mode is nice but I don't like the situations where hit two foot pedals at the same time is required to change modes. Maybe not a big deal to some.

Sound Quality : 7
Amp modesl sound pretty good - once you starting adding stomp boxes, changing cabinets and such I got frustrated, but again others may not.

Manual is detailed on info, but not so much on application. There is Power user guide available. This is suppose to help quite a bit.

The unit seems buggy to me. Little quirps (noise, loop cutting out, volume cutting out, recalibrating expresssion pedal) that aren't fatal but kind of annoying. That is my concern with all in one units that all is done, but nothing done great.

I'm giving this a 7 because while I think the sounds are unuseable , but the effects are what really hurt this. I think the amp modesls/cabinets get high marks but the effects pull it down to a 7. The artist presets are extremely superficial and not what I would call inspriational.

I like changing things on the fly and like to tweak a lot and it seems
like it takes a fair learning curve to do that. There is software to edit parameters on a computer, but I find that tweaking with the unit at an event is more important.

Reliability : 7
Again it seems buggy. I wouldn't use this for a gig, only for home use or perhaps a situation where you're not toting it around a lot.

I have had Digitech RP units in the past and the GNX4 uses the same stomp pedals they did then, which I still don't like now - the mechanism underneath seems to get warn. It's metal, but it doesn't look like it's built like a tank to me.

Customer Support : 7
Does not appear to be super responsive.

Overall Rating : 7
If you want an all in one unit - fx/modeling/drums/recording at a price point of approximately $500-550 (adding 50 for a CF card) you can't beat it because there is nothing else out there like it. For higher quality fx/modeling/drums/recording you will need to buy higher end gear.

This is a very powerful piece of hardware with capabilities some people will never comprehend. You have to be committed to learn how to get the most out of it. Dumbasses and sluggards should probably look elsewhere.

Sound Quality : 9
For versatility, it's just about the best you can get. If you just want one particular sound, it may be better to get equipment that is specialized at delivering that particular sound.

For live sound, amp and cab selection is critical. This is true with any modeling processor.

Reliability : No Opinion
I have had no problems, and judging by the GNX4 forum on Digitech's website (http://www.digitech.com/soundcomm/guitar_product_start.asp?productid=199), reliability seems pretty good. I don't have long-term first-hand experience with it, so I won't rate it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Again, no first-hand experience, but from what I've seen, Digitech seems better than average.

Overall Rating : 10
With this unit, you can produce any range of outstanding live sound, for many different styles, but you have to use the right equipment. You can't just plug it in to the front of any amp. The pedal board allows for very powerful control of your sound, and you can access different effects and presets quickly and efficiently.

For practice and composition, the onboard recorder is priceless.

The back of the box has a vast array of connectivity options.

With the GNX4, the supplied software, and a decent computer, you can make CD's that most listeners could not differentiate from a pro studio product. 'Nuff said.

I can't believe I actually thought buying this thing would be a good idea. This thing sounds absolutely HORRIBLE!!! I figured out how to use it pretty quickly, but what I figured out first was that ALL 80 factory presets were GARBAGE. I liked the BASS guitar emulator and the drum machine but that was it. I didn't buy it just for the BASS emulation and Drums. I bought it because I fell for all of these reviews on here that claim this thing is the next best thing since Birth Control Pills. As for the Low Ratings, these reviewers know exactly what I'm talking about. A CASIO KEYBOARD does sound better as one reviewer stated. I tried to read the manual and many of the terms they use are for Tech Geeks. A beginner wouldn't have a chance with this manual. I've played for 18 years and I didn't understand it. Editing Patches? That's a joke, the edits only make them worse. Buy a POD and you'll get every penny of your money's worth.

Sound Quality : 1
I used it with a Peavey Heritage VTX 2X12 and a Mexicastor, an Ibanez RG270DX and an old Charvel Strat. It wasn't noisy, but the way this thing sounds in general, the noise would sound better! The effects? What effects? They all SUCK! I liked using my regular 6 string to make BASS groves because I don't own a BASS guitar and the Drum machine sounded good. It is supposedly made for a guitarist, it seems to be more of a BASS and DRUM backing device. For $500 you could easily buy an old Drum Machine and a BASS guitar and then save up for a good analog 8-Track and you'll have what you need for semi-professional solo recording. The Artist Presets are absolutely DISRESPECTFUL to the Artists. Stevie Ray and Jimi would come back from the dead just to kick the crap out of Digitech if they could hear how there sounds are portrayed. Digitech should be ashamed for producing such a travesty, let alone charge over $500 for it. I wouldn't pay $50 for this thing!

Reliability : 1
Can you depend on it? Maybe if you're 5 years old with your Kindergarten Band at the Elementary School Talent Play!

I cannot imagine anyone would be retarded enough to GIG with this thing!

Customer Support : 1
They answer your questions as if you are a TECH GEEK! When asked what certain statements in the manual mean, they answer with more TECH GEEK statements. If this thing is so FOOL-PROOF and Beginner Friendly, why don't they tell people precisely what they need to know rather than beating around the bush and asking questions in reply to a question. THEY DON'T ANSWER QUESTIONS!!!

Here's the Deal. I play ALL styles and create my own styles when it comes to guitaring. I've played for 18 years and I favor BLUES music. I own Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, Charvel and B.C. Rich Guitars and Peavey, Crate and Fender Amps. I also own a Crate PA System with two massive 15 inch Speakers and a LINE 6 POD 2.0. The POD and the PA system are all I need when it comes to gigging. If a theif stole this thing, he would return it! I like the fact the it has everything together all-in-one. That's a Great Idea, but as far as the sound quality and ease of use... Well, let's just say you're better off buying a peice of crap Synsonics Sears Guitar and a Gorilla amp. WHOEVER GAVE THIS THING A HIGH RATING AND PRAISE THIS THING MUST EITHER WORK FOR DIGITECH OR STILL HAVE ACCESS TO QUALUDES!!!

I own Marshalls ,Boogies, 5150's, and triple xxx. I use this thing more than I use them. People really need to learn about tone and tweaking before knocking this thing. As for the people who rate it high, hats off to you, you know whats up and are true guitarists and tone miesters. Here's a trick for all of you tone deaf people, This is a killer metal setting: Patch 26 "Rectify" Gain:99 Bass:8 Mid:4 Treble:10 Level: 80 Stompbox: on Dod 250 gain: 15 or higher if you like. Reverb: on Hall , level: 60. Delay on, Ping pong, 460 milliseconds of delay, level 35, Chorus on, Noise gate on. Run 1/4 left and right outputs to the effects returns on two good amps tube or solid state. Have fun. Fell fre to get back to me on this. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the stock patches and overall sound, especially after reading the "1" ratings in other reviews here. (You guys crack me up.)

I haven't done too much patch editing yet, but the "matrix" of knobs and buttons is very well thought out.

I found the manual to be quite adequate. There isn't anything I haven't been able to find in it to answer questions that I've had.

There are some on-line Flash tutorials at http://www.guitarworkstation.com by Craig Anderton which are also informative. Also, there are several user forums (not controlled by Digitech) at http://www.gnx4.org

Firmware is v1.3.

Sound Quality : 8
I am playing the unit through an old TOA 4-channel rack mixer, through an Alesis RA100 power amp. I'm using a Peavey Impulse III speaker/subwoofer setup (this product was discontinued by Peavey years ago). The guitar is an Eggle Berlin Pro - similar to a PRS custom 22, with SD Custom-Custom and Alnico Pro II pickups.

Regarding noise - I do have some hum on high-gain patches, but my basement has some wiring issues (reversed ground and neutral) and also there are a lot of fluorescent lights down there, so it's not a very friendly place to do audio stuff in. That said, the three short demo "songs" I've recorded with the built-in 8-track sound fine. I will need to mess with the noise gate feature of the GNX4 and crank up the gating factor for some patches when I get a chance. (And get my wiring fixed!)

Sounds: There are five or six patches that I keep gravitating to; I'm confident that I'll be able to roll some of my own in short order. But, I've been having too much fun jamming with what's there to get serious about this yet.

The unit features some "celebrity" patches - overall they seem fairly authentic, but I'd want to fine tune some of them if I was going after a particular artist's sound (which I'm not).

Reliability : No Opinion
I haven't had it long enough to opine about reliability. The build quality/fit 'n finish are fine; the unit seems rugged although I'm sure you could kick the knobs off if you tried.

I would probably have a backup guitar amp if I was gigging seriously - I would play the unit through a PA of some sort as a rule, and the guitar amp could cover either the PA *or* the GNX4 developing a problem.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have no experience with the support so far. I will soon, as I can't get the GenEdit software to work with my Win2000 laptop.

Overall Rating : 9
My playing style is pretty varied, but as examples I am a big fan of Neal Schon (esp. his post-Journey jazz-rock stuff), Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, and Dave Gilmour. Oh, and SRV of course. I can find stock patches for all of the stuff I've been playing through the box that work for me.

I have been playing for about 30 years, and have lost count of all of the musical gadgets that I've bought in that time. The GNX4 has been a very pleasant surprise - I was originally shopping for an 8-track DAW but was attracted by the "stupid-simple" user interface of the GNX's built in recorder, combined with some new sounds to play with. And indeed it is *very* easy to use (although getting the drums sync'd up and playing with the recorder took some reading of the manual).

The built-in drum patterns sound very "human" to me - not nearly as much like a drum machine as I was expecting.

The ability to play MP3 "backing tracks" files to play against is really cool.

I have grown a bit bored with my previous rack guitar processor - I've been playing through it for probably ten years - and the guitar sounds of the GNX are a nice change. I have barely scratched the surface of this part of the box so far - I'm looking forward to creating some Warped sounds.

Going into the audio in/out and signal routing capabilities of this unit would double the length of this "review" so I won't do that. But suffice it to say that I'm pretty amazed by those things. Before I bought it I had no idea how cool the USB audio stuff would be.

When I saw the brochure for the GNX4 at the store a couple weeks ago, I laughed to myself about the "Guitar Workstation" name. I now realize that that name is spot-on accurate. An owner that spends some time with the manual and on-line resources will be rewarded with some pretty amazing sounds and capabilities.

As others have touched upon, the people that have posted "1" ratings (a) didn't spend adequate time to learn how to use it, and/or (b) had it hooked up or configured incorrectly (e.g. the speaker emulation switches on the back are CRITICAL things to have set properly depending on what the unit is being played through), and/or (c) have a bone to pick with Digitech for some reason, and/or (d) don't have a life and enjoy seeing their ranting in print on the web.

I'm giving this category a "9" because I don't recall ever being so pleased and excited about a new musical toy/tool after using it for a little while. (I wanted to give it a 10 but I've only had it a week.) A caveat is that I haven't really been paying attention to the latest and greatest guitar effects for a few years, until recently - I went through a "boutique amplifier" phase for a while and didn't really use effects.

I'll close by saying that in several years of reading reviews on HC, I don't think I've ever posted a review of my own - these things are just too subjective. However, I was compelled to in this case, just to provide some balance!

right out of the box and a few twist of the knob it works, but tweaking is a whole other thing the master, using the software that can supplied it crashed my computer twice, tried to call but could not get through to customer assistance.with a piece like this digitech needs to supply a dvd owners manuel, the text manuel is very difficult to follow.next I tried to reroute effects but you cannot they run a perpetual chain of effects....bummer.and as far as downloading presets go,I downloaded them but could not get to file save on the gnx4,I was so frustrated at that point I just gave up.

Sound Quality : 1
I ran the gnx4 through my deizel herbert head and my aria pro2 knight warrior and a custom made mexican strat,an awsome guitar.I first plugged through the front of the amp so I could use my other effects and it sounded god awful, nothing but thinned out treble and feedback. So then I tried the effects loop, but the problem is you cant loop through parralell with this unit so I just ran it out on the return, better but I could not use my other channels because now my board was diatonically shut down through the effects loop return.now this is just my opinion but I have heard better sound through a pocket amp, absoulutly awful. The tone is very thin and transparrent even with hours and hours of tweaking I could not get any half way decent tone what-so-ever,very dissapointed since I owned one of the original pods and this piece has gone backard not forward in tone evolution. The effects are even worse, the wah is a joke, the chorus has no shimmer, and the flanger and phaser are dry and thin, and I guess that is the best way I can describe the overall sound is THIN.This thing is an engineering travesty.

Reliability : 4
solid metal case and foot control but very thin cheap plastic knobs that feel like they will break in no time with moderate to heavy use.this thing has not only crashed my computer twice but it has also crashed on itself numerous times,I am very dissapointed I bought this.

Customer Support : 6
could not get through when I tried to call, but there website is ok.

After reading reviews on harmony central it was clear people either love this thing or hate it,so I bought it from store that has a return policy, thank god because otherwise I would be out 500 bucks. This thing has alot of features but does none of them well, you truely do get what you paid for. Those interested in good sound will be mortified in the quality of this unit, beginners will probably live with it and find it a good piece for just starting out and putting ideas down.Anyway this is just my opinion but with so many other good quality units out there I would look elsewhere.

like anything else fairly easy if you take time

as a previous owner of digitech preamps and effects they have always been ok for people on a budget and deliver ok sound, this one is no different in that it gives you quantity but not quality. To all the people out there who gives this thing a 9 or 10...what are you smoking?it has all the effects like a phaser, flange, chorus, digital amp reproductions, but the quality sucks!!the amp mods sound all the same or pretty close, the phasers and flage have absolutly no personality or bite and the deley gives you 2 dry sounding options.sure it has alot and is a great "value" if you want to look at it that way,but we are not rating value here we are rating sound quality and this unit is not very good comparred its competition in other brands, the distortions are veeerrrrrrryyy dry and lifeless comparred to the pod live or even the new vox,you think that a company like digitech would have done a better job on their sound emulation considering what elese is on the market. This unit has a lot of features but if your looking for tone run dont walk away from this thing.

Reliability : No Opinion
nothing has broken yet

Customer Support : No Opinion
never dealt with them

Overall Rating : 2
Again, this unit is a great value but very weak in tone and effects.the recorder is nice to capture ideas but that is about it,the drum machine has a lot of different patterns but you cant program in changes it just keeps playing the same beat over a nd over again, and also i found out if you program in over 3 tracks it gets real muddy and distorts when turned up.good "value",bad engineering.

This is not a toy. It is a serious device for serious players, and thus it is one of the more complicated devices to learn to use. However, once you have learned how to use it, it is then very simple. That is not a contradiction; it just means that this is not something you can simply plug in, turn a knob or two, and have great sound. You must work with it, and be patient. The manual is good, but not great. Trial and error will get you where you want to be. Work with it for weeks on end, and you'll be very pleased with the end result. Again, this is not something you can simply start using right out of the box. Be prepared for that, and you'll do fine.

Sound Quality : 9
As someone wrote in these reviews before, the sound of a great tube amp cranked up and pushing hard is pretty much as good as it gets. Tone monsters and tweakers will always know the difference. However, most audiences--particularly with your band going full blare behind you--will not. You can get fantastic sounds out of the GNX4--fantastic. You have to work with it, but the beauty of the GNX 4 is that you can use the "warp" setting to design your own tone. In fact, I would say that the ability to design your own tone is one of the major selling points of this machine. I play this through the clean channel of a Roland Cube 60, and it sounds great. The effects and stompbox simulations are adequate to good. Effects are good. The compressor is okay. All together, it sounds great. Each effect considered on its own--well, you can find amps and pedals that produce better chorus, distortion, or overdrive--but it is the "all in one" feature of the GNX4 that makes up for any weakness you will find in the individual pedals. It is also very, very quiet--even with the compressor running. I love it.

Reliability : 9
I never gig without a backup--anyone who gets money for performing knows that. The pedal has proved thus far to be very solid. So far so good.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I haven't dealt with them yet, so I wouldn't know what I'm talking about in this catagory.

Overall Rating : 10
TO ALL YOU SERIOUS SEARCHERS WHO COME TO HARMONY CENTRAL TO LEARN ABOUT A PRODUCT--PLEASE DISREGARD ALL THE REVIEWS SCORING THIS PRODUCT A "1". Anyone who rates the GNX4 a "1" is not providing you a serious review. That is the primary reason I wrote this assessment. The "1" voters out there are unfairly sand-bagging the overall ratings for this product. Just like one "0" can destroy your grade-point average, a "1" distorts the true value of the GNX4. Please throw all of those grades out and read the serious reviews that remain. You will then have a more accurate assessment.
With the GNX4 you get guitar and bass amp modeling, a drum machine, an 8-track recorder, and multiple in and outputs. I bought this device as a recording and practice enhancer, but now I use it live. That should tell you something about how pleased I am with the GNX4. It is true that it may not be a "10" on sound, but as noted above, you can get really, really close to some fantastic sounds--and the convience of the device makes up for all the rest.
I have been playing for 36 years, but only seriously (money-making) again for the last 3. I am old and can afford lots of primeo gear. I play a ES-335, Clapton Strat, modified American Telecaster, Les Paul Plus, and a Yamaha Bass.
With the GNX, I can practice leads easier, I can write songs (play all the instruments and do the vocal), I can tweak amp settings to get my own sound, I can run two amps simultaneously AND still run through the PA board, and I can program the whole evenings worth of settings through all the foot switches and run the box all evening--hands off. I can play some recorded stuff during our performance. This box does it all and more; it far exceeded the simple reason I bought it. I was going to get the PoD XT Live (I have friends that use the PoDs and love them, so I'm not anti-PoD), but for 100 dollars more I was able to get the recording, drumming, and looping capability I wanted for practice. I am very, very pleased.
The 8-track recording feature is my favorite feature. It allows writing, but also extensive home-practice on leads you might be struggling with. That way, I can go to practice or a gig in fine form.
For the negatives, the presets aren't so great. Thank God you can warp them into something you really like. Also, the manual could be better--but it isn't bad. I also wish they included a Flash Card with it so you wouldn't have to go buy one. I also wish it was dual-power for easier use in Europe. There is nothing thus far that I "hate" about this product If it were stolen, I would immediately replace it with the same exact pedal. It is a tremendous help to making music because it allows better practice and makes writing songs very, very easy.
I am giving it a 10 overall because it far exceeded the limitied objectives for which I bought it. The "all in one" nature of this pedal has made it both my live and practice primary device. It's a winner all the way around.
I play in a cover band and I write some of our songs. This device is perfect for both.
The last thing I would add is to repeat what I said earlier for all of you who use Harmony Central as a true unbiased viewpoint necessary in helping you form an opinion about your next purchase: THROW OUT THE "1" RATINGS. They are not helping you, but are instead clouding the truth. They're probably just the end result of a temper-tantrum thrown because of how complicated this pedal can be. It is not a toy nor a device you can simply plug in and turn up. You must work with it, and it is worth it in the end.

It has great variety in sound and is pretty easy to use, provided you read the manual and have some experience with digital and computer based recording.Editing is quite easy, especially creating amp models (past experience with vintage amps and effects helps, though)The manual is pretty thorough. I bought this to woodshed on and do home demos-for those purposes, I like it a lot. Read,learn,play...pretty easy!

Sound Quality : 9
OK, here is the rub...I own most the old vintage gear this thing replicates. NO it can't fool my ears...BUT it can get 90% of those tones good enough for demo and practice use and that is what I needed it for.I've not found it noisy but I always review the chain of effects, etc to make sure the gate is optimized before I crank my output levels to record. The effects quality is fine and quite useable. I don't use it with any of my amps at all..I have a Bradshaw switching system and a choice of amps and cabs to suit whatever live or studio work I need to do-this is a home-bound item for me, putting it into a working rig would be redundant. I tend to want to craft my own sounds and have no artists in mind that I wish to emulate. Most everything is quite good soundwise, if you take time to tweak it. It ain't godhead like my 69 Marshall plexi, but it isn't supposed to be. This baby is an idea generator-I view it as an audio sketchbook.

Reliability : 10
Hasn't broken yet, but it leads a sheltered life. I actually am going to gig with it. The idea of this and a cheapo tele or strat in gig bags sounds like a light load to pack. Again, I've been at it long enough to know that great performances come from me, and gear is negligable when it comes to entertaining folks. Use what you have.As far as a backup....I'll always carry a preamp in case it fails so I can run thru the board. This may be perfect for those spur of the moment small club gigs...

Customer Support : 9
They didn't send the bag and stuff that they advertised it coming with-but they had it out to me within a week of my contacting them..and they were friendly, too.

Overall Rating : 10
I play a variety of styles and have been playing for 28 of my 38 years.I own several vintage guitars as well as a few newer less pricy utility axes. I have many nice old tube amps and effects as well as fretted and fretless basses. I'd probably buy this again because it has the guitar and bass emulators, drum machine, 48 volt phantom power for a condenser mic, and the onboard 8 track and flash card is great for capturing ideas. Nothing else can do all this in one box.It makes it easier for me to create music and that is how I evaluate it. Frankly it seems suited for workstation type users and I feel that a person who needs a more focused product might look elsewhere. The metal player (and I love metal, too) will probably be happier with something that is more focused on 1 or 2 killer high gain sounds. For getting music past conception to the next stage of development, it has been money well spent in my opinion.

Jimminy Christmas but I hate the folks who have a device for one day and then decide they have to trash it because it doesn't make the "sound" they want right away! The GNX4 is a very sophisticated (and complicated!) piece of high-technology equipment. Do NOT buy this piece of equipment if you are not prepared to spend some time learning about it.

Stop expecting to get perfect tone right out of the box. That's just stupid and you're going to do nothing but piss yourself off. I have been playing for 25 years and I still can't always get the perfect tone ... even with the best equipment.

Music is about touch and style much more than it is about diodes and processors. I salute the engineers at Digitech for coming as close to the real sounds as they did, but let's not kid ourselves ... you are not going to get the "original tone" except on the original equipment.

If you are buying the Digitech GNX4 so that you can emulate the "sound" of you favorite guitar god then stop right now. The GNX4 is more about innovation than immitation. It is about getting "new" tones as well as "classic" tones.

If you want to sound exactly like Eric Clapton or SRV then get their equipment ... oh yeah ... you better spend years practicing as well.

If you want to emulate the tones, while still having the ability to add your own style or verve to the mix, then the GNX4 is the perfect beast. Besides, who wants to sound like everyone else anyway? Those guys became famous because they didn't sound like everyone else.

You MUST READ the manual and spend some time with this equipment to get the most out of it! If you are the type of person who practices 10 minutes a day and expects to play like SRV, Hendrix, Clapton or some other mega-star guitarist then stop right now. Not only are you NEVER going to get any good at your instrument but you are also not going to put in the time it will take to get good with the GNX4. So save your money for something else.

How easy is it to use? Well that depands on how dumb you are or how much experience with similar equipment you have. If all you have ever done is play you Squire fake strat through a "$40 amp" as some have suggested then hell no it's not going to be easy.

But if you have used modern amp modeling equipment before then you'll probably do okay. The presets are pretty close and the overall capability is way beyond what most equipment can do. But you must put in some time to make it work right.

Sound Quality : 9
I use the GNX4 almost exclusively when I solo or in my studio. I run it into a Sony 3.8Ghz Intel 4 based computer system with 1024 Meg or RAM and a 200 Gig (10,000 RPM) hard drive. I do NOT drive the GNX4 directly into the computer -- though I could -- but instead put it through a USB based enhancement rack. That helps keep the noise low and the input clean.

I also run the GNX4 through three different amplifiers. I use it from time to time with my Fender Acoustisonic JR when I'm playing my Taylor 314 Koa Acc/Elec guitar. This guitar is absolutely beautiful by itself, so I'm very picky when amping it at all. The GNX4 allows me to shape the sound just right for each song I play, and it sounds really good with a good amp.

I also use the GNX4 through a Peavey Bandit practice amp, and this is probably the worst that I get. The Bandit is an older amp but the GNX4 gives it new life. In fact, it's the GNX4 that has prevented me from selling the amp and buying a new one.

I also run the GNX4 through a Fender Cyber Twin SE Amp ($1200) with 2x12 Celestion speakers when I'm on stage with a group. I play LOTS of jazz, blues, classic rock, and such, so the GNX4 gives me the chance to quickly switch between different sounds as I need them. I use the custom settings quit a lot, so that I know that I'm locked in to the tones I want with each new song.

One thing I have noticed among those negative comments is that most of the users are playing through less than stellar amps. That will make a BIG difference in the way the GNX4 will sound. If you get a chance go to the local music store and plug the GNX4 into as many different amps as you can. Get a feel for what the box sounds like with different amps.

I actually set the GNX4 on one setting and then went between 4 different amps without changing the GNX4. This gave me a chance to see how the same thing sounded with different amps. It was amazazing, and it certainly showed me how much difference the amp can make. Which probably helps explain why some of these folks are so negative ... maybe their amp sucks and the GNX4 just can't recover from a bad situation.

Reliability : 9
I have been playing the GNX4 for over a year and have had zero problems. I read about a few others who have and wonder why. This is not my first Digitech equipment, and I've never had trouble with their stuff.

I will easily use this processor on a gig without a backup.

Customer Support : 9
Only dealth with them twice. The first time was for a patch I downloaded from their site. This was a patch made by someone else and loaded on their site as a user service. Seems the patch had a bug in it, and the folks at Digitech helped to fix it.

The other time was with a different piece of equipment that a friend had. They paid for shipping back but found out my friend had actually opened the device and fiddled with the internal stuff. That's a big no-no, and though it voided the warranty they still fixed it for a very reasonable price.

Overall Rating : 9
I play blues, jazz, classic rock, and similar styles. This ia good match if you play a wide variety of music. It sure beat carrying around 90 different pedals and amps.

If it were stolen or lost I'd have to cry ... then I'd probably buy another. I do have to say that I played on the VOX and liked it, but it's another $100 or more. I've also played on the POD version which is $100 less ... and I'll stick with Digitech. For the $499 I get to record directly to the flash card and you can't do that with either of the others.

Low-rating reviews seem to be rating ease of *learning* - which is still very high, btw - not ease of *use*. Having played since before the dawn of digital multi-effects, I can tell you with authority that the GNX4 is easy to use. I really can't imagine what is the background of the people saying that they have a hard time getting around in the GNX4, but I'll bet that background isn't professional music. This is actually a dumbed down interface for this type of processor, with an individual knob for each paramter and a printed explanation on the front of the unit; it's made so you can edit programs on a dark stage/pit with 5 seconds between songs/cues. If you want your mommy to buy you something easier to use than this, tell her you want an Esquire and a Champ.

Sound Quality : 10
Played: Strat, Tele, 335, Ibanez S-type, Martin acoustic, Fender P/J bass.

Thru: amp, amp fx loop, direct to recording console, USB to computer, direct to live mixer, computer speakers, headphones.

Sounds good. Just build your presets from scratch; don't bother even trying the "showcase" type presets that come on the machine. It's not like there is any disincentive to tinker with the sounds; you can edit presets visually on the PC and A/B as many as you want by cycling thru preset windows.

This is not a very easy to use product. I think it has all the bells and whistles needed for good marketing, but nothing that is either useful or easy to use. The X-Edit software that comes with it stopped working after 2 weeks and I was required to reinstall Microsoft .NET. The USB doesn't work properly, and it completely ruined the driver mapping on my Windows XP.

People who have given this product a good rating are over hyping it (probably because they want to sell off their GNX4 at a good price.)

Sound Quality : 1
If I could, I would have given a -10. But how come there are so many people who have given it a good rating? Well, probably because they were comapring it to their $50 amp. Be careful on what other people are comparing GNX4 to (no doubt, it sounds better than a $40 practice amp).

I mostly play blues and rock. I have a Voodoo Lab Preamp, a Line 6 POD Pro, a Yamaha Magic Stomp, and a Tech21 SansAmp preamp (which I sold to buy this crap), and this is the worst sounding product. I use a Parker Mojo Nitefly, and every time I use a high distrotion sound, there is a weired ringing sound (POD Pro also has a similar sound, but it's less audiable.) I have spend hours tweaking the sound but nothing seems to make a difference. The quality of reverb is terrible (although there are quite a few useless options.)

Another problem is that there is no dynamics, that is, no matter how you pick the strings or how you do you hammer off/pull off/slides, it will all sound the same. In fact, even if you change the pickup, there is very little difference.

If you don't need so many sounds, I would recommend that you buy a Voodoo Lab Preamp. It costs about $700 and the sound quality is unbelievable. If you need lots of sound, I would recommend magicstomp--it's cheaper and much better (the reverb and chorus on magic stomp beats $1000 TC Electric effects processor). I haven't tried the M-Audio Blackbox, but that might also be an option. In general, I would not recommend either GNX4 or any of PODs--they are all horrible expensive boxes.

Reliability : 10
It's pretty reliable.

Customer Support : 10
I had problems with X-Edit and they responded to my emails fairly quickly.

Overall Rating : 1
Don't go by the hype. GNX4 is not a good sounding product. If you want good sound, and cannot spend more $500 then buy magic stomp. If you can spend $200 more, buy the Voodoo lab preamp.

It's quite intuitive actually. Good manual. By the way - for anyone interested in this device I'd not pay attention to the "Willy GZ" review of 2/08/2005 unless you play metal as he does. Notice the fellow had played this thing for "one" day. If time is spent learning it and adjusting parameters it can be a fine accessory for anything you might want to do. It has many functions other than effects processing.

Sound Quality : 8
I agree that some of the sounds are synthetic sounding but, as I stated earlier, are modified by adjustments to include EQ. I've used Fender statocasters and telecasters, a Guild X-160, Les Paul Classic and PRS standard with this and find them all colored a bit differently. No noise. I use it straight through the PA and also with a Fender Cyber Deluxe which opens all kinds of possibilities for soundscapes. I haven't tried the favorite artist thing

Reliability : 8
I don't know much about this yet - I've had it a month and have not used it in a concert environment - I need to control it effectively first. It appears, however, to be strongly built. I'd use it without a backup because of the Cyber Deluxe amp.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Don't have a clue about this - never asked for anything. I suspect, like many other companies, a lot depends on the individual person you're talking to. Some are friendly and very knowledgable, some are dumber than a bag of hammers...and unfriendly to boot.

Overall Rating : 8
I play just plain music - 30 years playing anything with a melody and some great hooks- the repertoire spans everything imaginable except Rap and heavy metal. I do play a Green Day tune or two but that's as "heavy" as it gets. Maybe that's why this device works for me and not a metal guy like Willy. Again - this gizmo requires time to carefully "tweak" - for those without the time - don't invest in it. Picture it as a painter's canvas and your name is Renoir.
I have every effects unit imaginable because I'm a gear freak with more money than brains. I have Boss, Roland, Line 6, Digitech, boutique pedals, Zoom, Ibanex, Danelectro, DOD, dbx, and more devices.

I bought this primarily because it's an effects unit, a recorder, a drum machine and it's USB connectable to my computer to further "paint" It's called a WORK station for a reason.

I bought mine new from Musicians Friend on sale for $499.99 shipping included. It was easy to find and use the factory presets after a glance at the manual; but, as far as every other aspect of this thing is concerned, It sucked. Editing made an already sucky sound slightly suckier or slightly better. The manual is very thick and thorough; but, it doesn't explain what exactly things are and what they do. It needs a glossary with definitions of each term so even a beginner will know what a "patch or loop" is and does. It was easy to use the factory presets for the guitar and the drum machine; but, when it came to customizing and saving, IT SUCKS!!!

Sound Quality : 1
I tried it with a Fender M-80 practice amp and a Gibson Les Paul Studio Mahogany(also from Musician's Friend) and I plugged it into the amp-in instead of the normal guitar input jack so it would bypass the amps controls. It was not noisy at all. The sound however was terrible. It has 80 factory presets and I found less than 10 decent. All of them sound completely artificial and digital including the ones I favored. It reminded me of a Casio keyboard's sound. The effects were cool; but, still pretty lame. I play METAL and Blues and a little Classic Rock and this thing has artist presets for EDDIE VAN HALEN, ANGUS YOUNG and STEVIE RAY VAUGHN. The ANGUS one sounded clean, no distortion at all. Whoever made it is a moron because every AC/DC song I've heard except maybe for RIDE ON was raw and distorted. The Eddie Van Halen one was fair. The Stevie Ray Vaughn one was actually pretty good. I need METALLICA-style distortion and AC/DC style which I use with all my Classic Rock like BOSTON, JOE WALSH and TED NUGENT. I could not acheive it with this thing. I also have a "LINE 6 POD 2.0" and it KILLS this thing hands down. The POD can be noisy if not connected properly; but, it's sound is 100% better than the GNX4. Bottom Line is, THE GNX4 SOUNDS COMPLETELY SYNTHETIC. It might be good for TECHNO music; but, who listens to that crap anymore.

Reliability : 1
I'm returning mine after only having it a day, so I can't really say anything about it's reliability. It is metal; but, the buttons and knobs are cheap plastic. I would never stage a gig without some form of back-up, even if I had the most professional of equipment. Always cover your bases and have a backup for a backup. That's relaxing and safe.

Customer Support : 1
First of all, They don't have a TOLL-FREE phone number. I went to their website and sent an email asking about editing patches and also asked about how to get Metallica and AC/DC distortion and they suggested downloading some of the member's patches. I sent another E-Mail asking how to do that and they couldn't describe the process in terms I could comprehend. I asked what a Patch is and what a Loop is and they would not reply, so Customer Support SUCKS as well. I suggest they include a tutorial DVD with the GNX4 describing from start to finish, what to do to find your sounds and how to install the software and how to use the 8-track and Drums and show definitions for every music term describing what these terms accomplish. The emails they did answer were replied to fairly quickly; but, they never answered all my questions so THEY SUCK.

Overall Rating : 1
I've been a player for 17 years and the GNX4 is the worst guitar product I've ever tried. I also have a LINE 6 POD 2.0 and it is the best piece of guitar equipment I've ever used. I like the fact that it has 80 factory and 80 user presets; but, no matter what you do to any of the presets, they all sound like a CASIO keyboard. They are completely SYNTHETIC. The Drum Machine was awesome; but, I'm not buying this for the Drums. I play METAL mostly and the GNX4 can't cut it. I'm just glad I bought it from MUSICIAN'S FRIEND because I'm getting a full refund for it easily. I'm keeping my POD, it is a truely remarkable guitar product and you can get one cheap from Ebay. If you read this, MUSICIAN'S FRIEND should have a GNX4 on clearance after mine is returned. If you think you need one, Good Luck! I do not recommend the GNX4 at all. Get a POD and for the money you save you can buy a used drum machine and an 8-Track recorder and I'm sure that you'll be happier. this sounds very good going thru the effects loop of my road king but awful through the front of the amp, very gpc or family man sounding.the bad part is that you cant use the road kings other channels.the delay is not that good,i wish they would have put more options in it,the wah sucks, and the amp modeling still and will always sound digital,NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING by any stretch.

so so effects and digital sounding amp models, needs a 56p mod to improve the digital flatlining filter, and maybe a 3odd wave style semiconductor to smooth out the binary bumps.I used to work in the electromagnetic field and built many chipboards as a digital architech.the 8 track recorder is nice but would really benifit from 24 bit instead of 16,sounds way mushy the more tracks you add.paid 699 but thought that was a little much.digitech is comming out with a gnx5 in april so maybe there will be some changes.

You get a huge variety of sounds right out of the box, but need to tweak to get some keepers. Programming is tough at first but once you catch on it's amazing how versatile this thing is. The manual is great if you take the time to work through whatever it is you are trying to accomplish. I rev'd up the firmware to 1.3, was easy enough.

Rated ease of use at 5 only because it is such a powerful, versatile machine that it would be impossible to make it simple. This is not a complaint. These are very sophisticated features.

Sound Quality : 9
LP std. You get way less noise from this than you would would from any of the many amps it emulates. Lots of great tones. Every possible amp tone known to man is in this thing if you take the time to tweak. There are many sweet sounding amps in this baby. The effects are all very versatile as well.

Reliability : 10
Rock solid. Also own an RP300, it's solid too. Well built stuff.

Customer Support : 9
Emailed tech support. They were prompt and courteous. I would have solved it on my own anyway if I'd been paying more attention. Manual is very well done.

Overall Rating : 9
If it were stolen I'd buy another today. The 8 track recorder works great. Still haven't mastered all the features on it yet and may never. The software bundle was a nice touch, haven't used them yet but a first glance look equally as powerful and complex. It does everything I bought it for and more. If it could be argued that it doesn't quite match that "tube" tone, the endless list of features and capabilities more than make up for it. It's like Digitech asked me to describe my dream effects pedal and then delivered it. Worth every penny.

Fairly straightforward. There is a lot here so you should read the manual. After that, it's a piece of cake.

Sound Quality : 9
NOTHING could ever compare to playing a good guitar through a good amp LOUD, but this unit really delvers the tools to construct a good sound in my opinion. My setup is a fender lonestar strat to a boss eq pedal to a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 40W amp. That combo serves me well to play blues and rock. I use this unit in that setup to add delay and overdrive (put it in the fx loop). I bypass the amp and cab modeling. It is terrific...a whole bunch of different overdrive pedals and good delay. But the best part of this thing is that when I practice at night with headphones or record direct and actually use the amp models and cab models ave been able to reproduce everything from AC DC to Hendrix to Ozzy to clean blues (very important to me). It's very cool. You have to use the volume on your guitar, though. I think this is the key to preventing everything from getting mushed together. The differnce is huge if you cut back the guiatr volume especially if you set up a Marshall, Fuzz and Wah pedal setup (like Voodoo Child) or use the pitch shifting capabilities. One thing, I don't think the wah's are good. They don't really seem to sweep very far or deep. Other than that everything sounds great. I tried the Boss and Line 6, but provided so much less control and sounded about the same to me. Actually, I think LINE6 is quite terrible because of their lack of control over their parameters. I never understood their one at a time approach to fx. oh well

Reliability : 6
I'm not a big fan of the construction. Seems delicate to me. If anything ever fell on that display....forget it you're all done. The knobs too are very cheap and stick (which is annoying tryin=g to set equalization frequencies).

Customer Support : No Opinion
I'll say this. I HATE companies that don't use standard adpaters or cables....the USB cable is not a USB to USB. It's "Digitech" to USB. What's up with that... I lost my power supply to my RP6 back in the day and Digitech charged me 30 bucks to replace it AND I had to wait for it in the mail. Companies shouldn't do things like that. Sony does this too...all parts have to be "special Sony parts". Annoying!!

Overall Rating : 10
It is the only product of it's kind. The control over the paramenters through the expression pedal makes this thing unreal. I love it and will always have the latest version.

The only thing that would have been better would be to include accessiblity to every last setting/feature in the desktop software. I would also take a lot more resolution on the readout for things like notes on what eacy footswitch does in stompbox mode. If they really wanted to make me happy they would implement a simple scripting language to give you more control. Output level buttons are impossible to see/feel w/o squatting down on the wrong side of it; point off for that.

Sound Quality : 10
I got this thing at a deep discount direct from Digitech (I give lessons at a Digitech dealer store). I didn't have high expectations for it; I just wanted the boomerang and recording features. It has really grown on me. I almost hate to admit it, but actually enjoyed the sound I got from it when my wife went to bed early the other nite and I turned off the "good" stuff and went digital thru computer speakers at ultra-low volume. You have to create your own patches from scratch; there wasn't a single default patch I could use for anything.

Pro 20 years. GNX4 is so handy and it sounds good. Actually they sound great - it's just not quite as much fun as playing thru a sweetheart amp. I use mine in my hard rock band and for my student's lessons, and any time the versatility/ease combo makes sense. I have several keeper tube amps, but sometimes digital just makes life simpler.

Like others have said it's not the simplest thing to operate at first. But after some manual time you come to find it's not as hard as you thought. The presets are pretty good, shows its ability. I have version 1.2. Born in Oct 2004. Has the most input/output options I've seen on a floor pedal. Love it. Talk about ease of use, I love having an onboard, foot controlled, 8-track recorder/looper. I have used the Boomerang looper and it's nice having the A/B funtion. But gladly gave that up for on board effects, I can save the loop when I'm done, and I can create a loop with my 1GB compact flash card that's over 3hrs! Editing the patches is pretty straight forward with the grid system.

Sound Quality : 10
Currently I am running a Taylor 410 with a fishman rare earth pickup, A Yamaha John Patitucci six string bass, Yamaha keyboard, and a simple dynamic mic into it. Currently shopping for new electric so can't give a fair review on that. But I'll update after I get one. Surprisingly, the pedal works great with the acoustic. I bought the pedal for the looping/recording funtions primarily and was blown away by it's ability to handle so many other instruments besides electric guitar. Running the acoustic straight in the guitar input sounds great endless effects options and they do all sound great. Even some of the distortion settings (some not all-it is still an acoustic). The cool thing about this pedal is I can play my six string bass through it and the effects work all the way down to the low B or lower. Back to the acoustic, mic'd it sounds great even with my cheap mic. Dry or DryRev yields a very woody acoustic tone. Probably do more to my Taylor than the mic but the GNX4 recorder grabs it all and it's 16bit on board (24bit option with computer software)Love it! I know mostly electric players will probably read this, but most of us have and acoustic and bass laying around. So maybe this will help open up more options for deciding on this pedal.
I have not found a weak effect yet. Another thumbs up to the sound quality is I listen to it through stereo headphones or my Hartke 4.5XL bass cab. With a little Eq it sounds pretty darn good through the bass amp. Have recorded some songs and played them back for friends through the amp and they all thought it sounded great. Im looking to run it through my church PA and also buy my own full range speakers and amp. Nothing bad to say about sound quality and I still haven't heard a good electric through it. You can read all the other reviews for an electric opinion anyway.

Well right now I'm trying to get an answer back from digitechs promotional team on the gnxfc rebate. I sent in my rebate for the gig pak and got it back quick (8 days= 4 there 4 back). I sent the foot pedal rebate the same day. But haven't heard back or received my pedal. They answered my first two e-mails the next day, but as of late no answer to my requests. Maybe they're on vacation? The response from the first e-mails seemed like they wanted to help so hopefully I'll hear soon. If i get the pedal soon I'll give them a good rating. The rebate does say allow 6-8 weeks, but since I got the gig bag back so quick I'm starting to worry.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall the pedal is without question the best buy you can make. Effects/Modeling/Recording/Looping/Computer Software/Inputs/Outputs/Modes/Compact Flash/Drums, and on and on. It will cover any style you want. This thing is awesome. And I got it on sale at Musicians Friend! Cha-Ching! It's perfect for song writers, or just players. You can be a one man band with this thing. I don't play drums but if I did I could back myself up top to bottom. The great thing is I don't have to play drums. I love this pedal. I have used and am using a POD 2.0 at my church. I'm not gonna knock it cause it does sound good. But it just sounds good. No other options like onboard recorder/looping etc. But the Digitech goes above and beyond in every category. It will help you make music you can't help but get better and better with a tool like this. I don't have a band I gig with regularly other than playing at church. So something like this, that I can use alone and get a full band playing back (Bass Keys,Drums, Backing vocals) and there all me is great! I've been playing guitar for 14 years, Bass 8 years, Keys 4 years. Wish I had this a long time ago!

8. This is not for the novice guitar player, but once you play with it for a little while it gets easier to use. This is a "workstation" not just an effects device. That is just one of the million things you can do with this. I've had mine for almost six months now and I am still finding out new things that it can do. The manual is excellent. It explains things very clearly. Editing patches is easy once you read the manual. I highly suggest this to prevent frustration later on and to make sure you hook it up correctly to your amps or whatever. This makes a huge difference in the sound quality you will get. Mine is firmware version 1.1 Again, Read the manual first a few times! You will have a very hard time at first if you dont.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using the GNX4 as follows: Guitar to gnx4, left and right outputs to the effects returns on two Peavey 5150 amps. A half stack and a combo. In use a Music Man Van Halen signiture model guitar and also an old Kramer Focus with a Duncan distortion in the bridge position. In my six months of having it I can safely say that I can get just about any guitar sound I want. Clean, Dirty, in between. It does it all. I've played guitar for over 26 years and was the head setup technician at Ernie Ball/MusicMan for 10 years. Iv'e had alot of amps in my time, 90% of them tube. Boogie,Marshall, etc... The "Rectifier" patch on the GNX4 has a gain structure that allows you to get any rock guitar sound you want. The distortion you can achieve with this setting is breathtaking, and this is coming from a dedicated tube man. Granted I do use tube power amps and this is highly recommended if you can afford to do so. But most of the tone I achieve "at low volumes" is from the modeling pre-amp. I don't play loud enough very often to drive the output tubes on my 5150's very often. I run my head with two output tubes for 60 watts to match my combo. The Gnx4 can replicate the super gain of the 5150 or a genuine rectifier with ease. Ive A/b'd them both for hours at all volumes and I can barely tell the difference between the two. You can get all Marshall tones with this patch as well. The EQ is unbelievable! So much tone shaping is available with the boost and cut. To get the best sound out of this unit you should if posssible use two amps or stereo power amp. This sounds killer. Just huge. The clean sounds are awesome as well. The effects are some of the best I have heard. The delays, reverbs and chorus in stereo is heaven. As you can probably tell I like Van Halen and I can Nail just about any tone that he has gotten. Did I mention the stompbox modeling? This takes the gain way over the top. If you play Metal, Death metal, Or just hard rock this is the box for you. The noise gate is superb. Even at the most extreme settings of gain and high amp volume it is dead quiet. Throw away you r distortion boxes and other effects, you won't need them anymore. I have a six space rack full of eq's processors, delays , I dont use it anymore. I give this a 9 because nothing is perfect. This won't make you sound like Eddie instantly. It's all in the player and your hands. But it will at least give you the tools to aspire to that kind of greatness.

Reliability : 9
This unit is rock solid. After years of making effects Digitech has nailed it. First rate stuff. It always sounds great and has never glitched. I would and have used it without a backup. I give it a 9

Customer Support : 9
Iv'e had alot of questions for Digitech about the unit and they always get back to me in a timely manner.

Overall Rating : 10
I play mostly Metal of all kinds, guitar instrumentals ala Satriani, vai, and van halen if he did instrumentals. also Clean jazz and fusion like Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech. The unit serves all of these sounds. I cant begin to have enough time to talk about all of the other things it can do. The 8 track recorder, drum machine, tuner, mp3 player, looper, and all of the recording software it came with. I have recorded my song and mixed them on my computer and the results were: Someone asked me what cd I was playing in my car the other day at the park. That pretty much said it all. I would buy again if stolen.

The lower score in this area should not be scene as a "knock" or a bad rating. This is simply a very complex tool, capable of many things. Once should not expect to pick it up and know it from front to back in one day. It's truly something you will need to build a relationship with, and its well worth the effort.

The sounds you can get out of this thing are endless. You no longer will have a use for any other channel on your amp then the clean channel.

The manual is good, however, its capable of more then the manual teaches you.

Sound Quality : 10
I'm playing Fender American strats though it. One standard with Duncan pickups. The other is an American Special HSS with a floyd, with DiMarzio pickups. They are plugged into a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 2X12. Any adverse noise you get comes from your amp, so choose wisely.

I have yet to find a weak effect or one that I could not make better (to my standards anyway) without some tweaks.

I have my favorite effects, and don?t have a use for some. But with so many to choose from, that?s bound to be the case.

Reliability : 9
I have yet to have an issue with it.

If you're in the market for an effects pedal/system, this is one to look at. However it is more then that and you will pay for the extras. It has a built in 8 track recorder, drum machine and even hooks up through USB to your computer where you can edit your music professionally using supplied software.

I was in the market for all of these things, so it was a no-brainer.

I've been playing 16+ years, never thought I'd need/want an effects processor, now I feel I ripped myself off of all these killer sounds for years.

My overall rating reflects some ones opinion who has gotten to know the system very well, who has taken the time and had the patience to look deeper into the system then the average person may. So while other categories may have lagged due to time and effort required to get to know it so well, now that I know it, my overall rating reflects.

Manual is very good. Better than most. Digitech now have video tutorials for editing etc, and more to come. Editing is easy enough being a previous Gnx2 owner. The recorder, computer USB interface, and Mp3 playback is what sets it apart. For a newbie to Digitech, it may take a few tries hence the 9 rating. Overall it is very easy to use and if you make a mistake...hard to ruin a patch. You must select save location first. The Editor is awesome. Simplified and easy to use. You change a patch, preview it, tweak and save to User presets 1-80. Yes...80. I have programmed entire gigs/sets settings with this, as well as selectable Mp3 recorded synth sounds during performances. Unheard of from any other gear made to date at this price. Very easy (and hard to forget how to do it which has been my hoop experience with other vendors). I used to have to use a midi sequencer, KB, interface, midi footswitches/cables and a messy stage. Not to mention, hope the singer triggered in a timely fashion. Guess what..now he touches nothing, no cables, no mess. Integrated sounds recorded on CF card and right into PA through Stereo XLR's. Digitech really listened to the users as for needs. Great solutions and simplified set up.

Sound Quality : 10
I use this live, recording shows, (Pa sound into recorder 2 trks). I play a variety of guitars, tunings, special effects (laugh tracks, out takes, comedic short mp3's, synth mp3's)through PA direct from Xlr's (balanced..who gave them that idea) and still have stereo 1/4" outs to stereo Mesa 50/50 with 212 cabs on each mic'd. Also using HP outs for in ear monitors. Talk about Sound !!!
The Effects are awesome. Patches need tweaked to taste. Modeling cabs/amps are so much better in the Gnx4. Noisy??? NOPE!!! Provided is a very nice gate to eliminate that. I have Dtheater settings, Satch, Vai, Acdc, Kiss, Ozzy, Zak, Methaney, Incubus, Lin Park, Korn, NIN, etc etc. preset sounds. No need for 12 or more stomp pedals, controllers and such. Again, all presets need to be tweaked to taste. It is not difficult to do so. Set it with your guitar/amp. I use Lp's, Ibanez, Strats. Cool thing is the pickup simulator. I broke jackplate on my strat live and was able to change pickup type gnx settings to single coil and did SRV covers with a Lespaul. How's that for functionality? The effects, CHORUS/DELAYS/AMP MODELS/COMPRESSOR/EQ/STOMPBOX modeling sounds, are fully editable and have a lot of capability to produce artist or your own dream sound wonders. Drum machine is also improved. More presets and fully editable drum patterns using Pro Tracks software (included). Some NIN songs our drummer sits out on. Gnx4 does it all. I have only scratched the surface here. really, of this unit's full potential. It doesn't butter your toast for you though.. All the previous gear has been replaced by a GNX4 and a Comp Flash card (512mb). INCREDIBLE !!!!

Reliability : 10
I have owned dozens of Digitech items, Rp10, 20. Rp3, Rp7, Rp2000, Gnx2 , Vocalist. Not one ever gave me a problem. Even the ac adaptors have never been replaced. Sorry Boss.

Look at the Digitech site and answer it yourself. The sound comminity of users, preset sharing, song sharing, idea sharing from musicians around the world. They are now improving editors to have capability of using all Gnx pedal patches. The community requested it, Digitech is goin to deliver. Awesome support. Once I lost a knob for my rp2000 and they sent me a new one in 2days no charge.

Overall Rating : 10
I have to rate this a 9.5. Nobody is perfect. Mainly for not having the patch compatibility (gnx converter for posted user patches) resolved soon enough. Being a guitarist for 27 yrs I just wish I had this thing when I started. I compared this to Gnx3, Boss Gt-6, Valvetronix, Pod xt pro. The recorder, sounds, mp3 playback, drum machine, metronome, Dual type outputs with speaker compensation on off switches, and professional editor, are what sold me. Pods are tinny, overprocessed IMO. Valvetronix nice sounds, same price, limited potential use in comparison. Gt-6 does not even compare, nor does the Gt-10. Gnx3 does not have the memory capacity, mp3 playback, or rehearsal mode, USB connectivity. I play many styles. Wedding/party covers, Rock/Metal covers. The Gnx4 is very much a professional device. Very affordable for it's feature/price ratio. Gnx4 also has faster chipsets to enable very much "Seemless patch changes" compared to all other pedals in this price range/type. I would be heartbroken if lost or stolen BUT I would replace it in a heartbeat. Cool thing would be just hook it up to Usb and restore the replacement's settings from my editor comp software. Compare this to purchasing a similar pedal, 8trk recorder, mic preamp, Usb comp interface, recording software, sequencer, drum machine, and a portable mp3 player and you will spend 2 to 3 times as much and have cables all over your stage/studio. I did a lot of homework before purchasing this unit. I am completely satisfied and the unit is worth it's weight in $$$$$.

Okay just got this last night, right out of the box it took about 5 minutes to get set up and to start trying out the various presets. A quick glance at the manual and had the drum beats going. Pretty easy to use, but having had experience with these kinds of pedals before probably helped. Hopefully as I start to explore the editing and record features it stays this simple.

Okay since I have only had it one night I got carried away jamming with just my Les Paul Classic and found quite a few of the patches were quite good. Some of the artist patches were pretty lame and not even close, but most of these types of pedals have patches that are not usuable or require editing to make them useful. Still I found quite a few that sounded very good and then I would start jamming little ideas and riffs so I can see it is going to take some time to fully explore as I did find quite a bit of inspiration in this unit. I only went through headphones with cabinet sim on so I can't say how it sounds through and amp. I did find that the whammy patch is not good at all and is basically useless as is. I use a morley wah with the optical switch and found it to be superior to my old cry baby so I will stick with it.

Looks and feels solid. I will have to see if it holds up to steady gigging. I never ever gig without backups for amps or guitars....if you play out long enough you will encounter failures and or bizarre
accidents. That was one thing about this that also appealed to me was the various hook up options which would help in case a failure of other equipment required getting creative on hooking stuff up. I will say that I have never had any failures on any of my other digitech stuff so I will rate according to past experience.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I have not dealt with them as I never had problems with any of their equipment, but I have heard they are quite good to deal with.

Okay for only having this one day and getting swept away playing with the preset patches and the drum loops I can see I will be getting alot of use out of this for just practicing and for recording. I will try gigging with this unit and see if it passes that test. I have other units like a zoom super player and a pod and have had others in the past and this seems like an improvement over some of the older models, but I would expect that as technology gets better. I did read alot of the reviews out there before buying this unit. I have been playing for around 40 years and still gig regularly playing anything from classic rock, heavy metal, alt country, to outright thrash speed devil music and I found patches for all of that last night on my quick tour of the presets. I would kill anyone who stold any of my equipment regardless of what it is, but from what I have seen of this unit so far I would get another if something happened to this one.

It's pretty easy to use also very easy to edit paches, cabinets, amps and save them.
It comes wtih an patch editing software, X-edit so you can edit any patcheson your PC.

The manual is Great, doesn't cover everything, but it's good enough.

Sound Quality : 8
As for sound quality, it's pretty good and very quiet, it comes with a NOISE gate effect that queits everthing down. Just eh Noise Gate alone, I give it a 10 rating. You can edit these pacthest o sound like anyone you wish, some might say that it sounds alittle too digital. The power is yours.

Reliability : 9
Reliability ? Yes, definitely fro the tiume being.

Once you get the hang of it, the GNX4 is pretty simple. The manual needs some work. Although it covers everything, its laid out a little strange. My advice is to read through the whole thing before attempting to operate any of the functions. It sort of gives you an overview of each function, then goes on to explain that funtion in greater detail later in the manual. I would read the first part, then struggle through trial and error before realizing there was more detailed info later on.

Only flaw I can see aside from that is with the onboard Expression Pedal. The Pedal can be set to control a variety of effects like volume, reverb, etc. It also acts as a wah. Pretty straightforward. However, when the pedal is pushed full down and slight pressure is applied, it activates the V-switch, turning off the wah and assigning whatever paramters have been assigned to the pedal. I find the V-switch to be too sensitive, tripping the wah on and off during heavy use.

Sound quality is excellent. After mixing songs down through the bundled Deck software (Mac) I can honestly say that with some patience you can rival the big boys. Proper setup before recording means less mixing and mastering, giving you pristine tones.

Seems sturdy to me. Haven't had it that long. I would say if something were to go it would be the footswitches, but they seem burly enough.

haven't had to use them, but the online FAQ section answered some weird questions that I didn't expect to find the answers to.

The GNX4 is a unit for a wide array of musicians and experience levels...it can definitely be the hub of your recording or live setup. I've mixed several tracks through it now, and I keep becoming more and more impressed as I become more familiar with it. Next I plan to use it for some live stuff and getting into the stompbox mode more...using the drum machine and mp3 player to back my live rhythm guitar and vocals. Its not lip syncing if I'm the one who ariginally recorded it, right?

oh yeah, needs a beer holder.
