This preamp takes a bit of tinkering to get used to, and you really have to have some knowledge of tones and effects parameters. Also, there is no B/M/T EQ, it's all graphic EQ, so it's not for the unknowledgeable.
If you know a little about what you're doing, it's faily simple after you get the hang of the interface.
Manual is available on digitech.com. I highly recommend reading over it.

It's my main preamp. I have no problems with noise.
Effects sound pretty good to me. As mentioned before, distortions may not be as brutal by themselves as you may want for modern high gain. 2 things to fix this.
First, on the amp, use the speaker sim EQ in the utility mode to program some more low end, and low mids in.
Second, and most importanly, GET AN EQ. I run a simple 7 band EQ pedal between this and my power amp, and it made a huge difference. My amp now sounds brutal as any high gain amp out there.
For my use, I have no complaints about the sound. I love it

I love the tones I get out of it, fits me perfectly.
I only wish it had a simpler EQ. That's really my only complaint.

The first guitar effects I ever had. I got this back when it was new and it served me well for a long time before it ended up in a box somewhere. I recently put together a new rig for live guitar and backup vocals and was about to throw it away because of all the noise. I gave it a second chance, though, and I'm glad I did. Now it's hard to believe the sounds I can get out of this old bag of tricks.
Distortions still suck. Pedals are better for that anyways. I don't notice the noise gate problems anymore. I just turn it all the way down. I use most all of it's other effects and you can use a lot of them at once. I had to feed it through the effects loop of an old Mackie 1202 and return it on it's own stereo channel. The noise is gone. Every other way I tried to incorporate it into my rig it wasn't worth keeping. I don't know how or why that works. Got to be careful it doesn't get sent to itself.
There's also a tube pre that makes all the difference. I don't play through amps, all I need is a stereo spot on a PA. I can split the vocals if I need to with the alt output on the Mackie. Smooth, warm, delays, chorus, reverbs, and more with a lot of control over parameters.
I created a silent patch so it's easily turned off when I don't need it.
It's getting used all the time again.

The only problem I've ever had with this unit is that the effects loop automatically engages when there's nothing there, and the whole unit is reset.
The connections for the foot controller are fragile. I leave it connected and protected. It controls program changes for two other effects units.

Lets face it this thing ius a little long in the tooth now but it is still capable of some great sounds if you set your system up properly - I run this out through a sub mixer that has built in DSP effects - I use theat to tweak the equalisation etc. depending whether I'm going into a big PA or into a nice clean channel like my Fender Deluxe. Of course it's pure guitar filth into a Laney LC15:?))

I love this thing - I have the remote pedal board for it which is a god send on stage or when I'm recording - I mainly play 80's style rock music for which it is absolutley ideal however I also play lead / rhtym and noise for an EM band, (who will remain nameless to protect the innocent), and it's done a great job for me. If it ever died I would want another and they are getting harder to find although you can still pick em up 2nd hand for under ??100.00 if you search around.
I do like the sounds it makes; the multitap delays are really nice and the crunch rhthyms are incredible.
For the monet this is a superb addition to my kit.

Yes, I agree that it isn't as easy as tweaking a pot on a stomp box, but you can get more sounds out of this thing than almost any rack mount I've ever used, and I've used A LOT. If you're looking for plug and play, then use one of the presets. I personally got 3 years of use just on that alone. The amp emulator is cool, and if you take the time to read the manual (READ THE FRIGGIN' MANUAL!), you can dial in almost anything you want. Getting into it can be time consuming, and it just isn't for your average ADD guitarist.

This unit has some GREAT settings: 57 Halls of Glass, the Neal Schoan patches, the heavily compressed rhythm sound, the leslie and blues setting, the Zeppelin settings are all actually pretty good. You may have to mess with the Cabinet Emulator to get the sound you want with your rig, but I can do it great. 98 is the PERFECT setting for "Wide Awake in America" by U2 or "Run Like Hell" by Pink Floyd. This is a great rack mound for someone in a cover band, or looking to dial in a heavily processed sound, like 80s and 90s rock.
I noticed some people mention having a problem getting good sound out of this unit. I would suggest you look at your whole setup: This is a solid state unit, if you are playing it through a solid state amp, well duh, it's going to lack punch and sound "clinical". Personally, get rid of the amp, solid state sucks. You gotta have some tubes in your path, brother! I play this through 2 Mesa Boogie SOBs (rigged for stereo), using a Strat, Ibanez Satchmo style, and an old Yamaha workhorse. The stereo effects kick ass on stage, people are impressed with the sound I produce. I can get great sound out of all three, punch and roadhouse loud with the Strat, overdriven with the Ibanez (cause them pickups is HIGH gain) and warm and buttery with the Yamaha as the pickups are slowly demagnitizing. If you are a metal head, this rack is a GREAT VALUE purchase. I agree that the Delays, Modulations (Chorus, Leslie, Phaser) and Reverbs are the best this unit has to offer, but that is significant. You would need about 10 stomp delays, choruses, etc to give you this kind of versatility. The only addition I have to my gear is a Wah, and Ernie Ball stereo volume, and a MXR EQ.

Again, if you lack the gumption to buy or read a manual (put down the bong), and are looking for tone like Stevie Ray, Santana, or some other Tone God, well, keep walking. You need a TS9, or a $4,000 PRS, or some other combination of talent and gear you may never have. This is a great little unit, that you can pick up cheap and have lots of fun dialing in the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cult, RHCP, to Dokken, Tesla, Ozzy, etc. So no, I don't think the distortions are bad, you just need to learn how to use it.

I'm a guitar player, NOT an engineer. I'm interested in making music, not programming effects units. I'd rather spend the time plugging in multiple stomp boxes. At least I know for sure what I have at any given moment.
Sound Quality
:

This thing has a noise gate on that literally chokes the sound out of any rig you put it thru. I bought this trying to stay away from multiple stomp boxes. I was sorely disappointed. The presets are all set to show the extreme capabilities of the included effects. That's nice, but doesn't help me out when trying to find a usable sound. I found the effects to be very sterile sounding. Most of the distortion/overdrives were not practical or usable. Maybe it would sound better with a tube amp. I even tried putting separate distortion pedals in the effects loop. I simply could not get a usable sound out of this thing.

Lots of flexibility, but very little practicality. The best equipment is that which you use. This ain't it. There seemed to be VERY inconsistent and differing volume levels for every setting. I spent the 6 mos I had it tweaking instead of playing. I don't mind having to dial in a sound, but I at least want it to deliver something I can use. A unit with this much stuff on it should be easily adaptable to any style of playing. I've been playing for 20+ years and this unit gets a big fat "F" in that regard. I find it takes me less time to hook up 6 or more pedals, and then find a good sound, than to tweak this unit while trying to find a sound to fit a given situation. I got my $$ back out of it on E-Bay, and I've never regretted letting it go. Sorry Digitech, but this was not one of your better moments.

Acually it sounds really BAD. I bought it in the early 90s because a friend of mine owned one and was happy with it. The thing is, that the distorsion sounds, sound really unnatural and "plastic". Poor dynamics and the noisegate has a strange behavor.
I got use for it later on, as a bought a marshall 8240 and used the gsp21pro as a reverb/delay-unit. I managed to sell it after a few years and used the money for something useful.

That depends on whether you want to master it, or take advantage of the presets. It's very powerful and if you would actually try to create effects from scratch you could be working pretty hard to work everything out. Having said that, the options are very typical compared to other racks which have the same "detail" so it's just a learning experience. Personally, I just take a preset and modify it to what I want.

ESP guitars with Screamin Demons through Boss Compressor, Mesaboogie Vtwin ( clean channel ) into 5150 combo with GSP21 in effects loop.
Slightly disappointing in terms of:
- Noise. It has a noise gate, and it's necessary. Playing through the clean amp channel the hiss is noticable.
- Affect on tone. When I use this there is an impact on the tone which I notice... It just takes the edge off it somehow.
In terms of general sounds and features I don't use it to the max so it's hard to judge. I'm using this in the amps effect loop ( ie after amp distortion ) so first thing I do is take out the compression and distortion from the rack sound. The chorus and flange effects are good. Delay is good, and reverb is actually very good.
I don't think I'm anywhere near getting the best out of this unit because I actually find my much more primitive ART DST4 to be better in terms of tone and noise levels so the GSP21 will be for when I want really long delays or various specific uses.
Having said that, when I went through the presets and played some of the distortion sounds I was pretty impressed. If I ever want to emulate a different amp then this is the equipment that I would use from my current arsenal.

Worth having. I'm a believer in buying old stuff that was good back then rather than buying new stuff for the same price. I don't like new digitech stuff ( like the GNX range ) at ALL but I like this rack. Unless I'm missing something through it does affect my sound adversely when I just use it for modulation or delay.

I bought this unit originally in 1991, and used it with a Mosvalve stereo power amp and two ADA 2-12 cabs, along with a Charvel Model 4 and Crybaby wah. At the time, it was one of the best processors out there if you wanted a good stereo sound. As time goes by though, the digital processors get much better. In 1991, I would have given this unit a solid 9 for distortion as well as clean sounds. You really have to use this unit in stereo to get the full effect (as well as using a transparent power amp). But recently my brother got a new GNX1, and it blows my GSP21 out of the water. The only thing I still like about it compared to the newer processors is the AWESOME foot controller. To be able to use 5 patches as well as having the ability to turn individual effects on/off is wonderful. Why do none of the newer floorboards do this?
Sound quality compared to the newer Digitech/Boss/POD stuff is now MAYBE a 6.

I have been playing off and on for 25 years. Cover bands, original bands, mixture of both. This unit has served me well over the past 11 years, but it's time for me to send it on its way. I'm quite sure it would be great for a newbie or someone who doesn't gig (and doesn't record). And you can get one for about $150 at MusicGoRound. Pretty good deal, I think. For what it does, and how OLD it is, it's pretty damn good. And for 150 bones, a good value.

I always thought it was easy enough to use. The presets provide a measure of instant gratification, as the pros who designed some of the presets did some of the work for you. But even when you try to play with the presets yourself, it isn't terribly difficult- most of the effects toggle between "off" and "on," and when you get to an EQ you can move the sliders up and down by pressing (surprise) the up or down button. Figuring out the patches on the footswitch takes a second, but I found I tended to punch in the numbers of the programs I liked anyway. The biggest frustration with using this unit was just trying to isolate single effects- it's hard to use this as just a chorus pedal or just a delay pedal. So beware- if you are buying this because you think it's ten stompboxes in one, think twice- it's not quite so easy to separate one effect from another.
Sound Quality
:
3
After spending a fair amount of money on this thing early in my playing career, I found that I had less and less fun with it the older I got and the more I realized that I should have spent the extra bucks on a better amp and a few stompboxes. The distortions are almost all disappointing, and although the delay and flange are as good as any other digital delay or flange, you could probably do better just buying a $100 stompbox. Plus, running through a 1x12 combo amp, the whole thing sounded really muddy, even when I tried to neutralize the amp EQ.

This is a fun toy, but I honestly think that in the process of trying to do lots of things at once, it doesn't do any of them particularly well. If you are truly a bedroom noodler, you might have a lot of fun playing through the settings, creating your own programs, enjoying some of the more ethereal presets ("the abyss" was always my favorite) and just generally making strange noises. But I couldn't really see this being of too much use onstage. In fact, after a few years of trying to play this thing every day, I found myself wanting to eschew effects entirely and plug directly into my amp. After a few years I was ready to at least use a wah pedal again.

One thing that is important to have is the manual. I had gotten mine used and it didn't have one, so it took me about a year to figure out how to alter patches. Mine has the Legend upgrade in it and I think it has 239 presets. This unit takes a whole lot of tweaking to get the sound just right. One thing I don't like is that all the presets have different volume levels. Also, I have to keep watching if the "Headroom level Overflows" (the little db graph thingy). I'm giving this a 7 cause I'm too much of a dumbass to get a manual.

Here is my "pawn shop" setup: Hondo Fame Series 760--->Dunlop Crybaby--->GSP 21 Pro--->A Really Crappy Practice Amp. This thing makes my guitar sound a lot better. The distortions and the chorus are great in my opion. Some of the presets are a little weak but if you want to make it sound better just do some tweaking. I'm still trying to figure out the EQ so if someone could email me and give me some help on that I would appreciate it.

There is a problem w/patch changing on the fly...There's a dead spot in between patches. This can be easly solved by using the effects loop...I've got a rackmount digital delay in the effects loop set to 10ms delay totally wet,Using the output gain,i blend the uninteruppted, slightly delayed signal in w/the regular signal and surprise,no more dead spot between patches!

I at first had a very difficult time figuring how everything worked as it didn't have a manual. (I'm still trying to find one by the way)Once I fooled with it for a few practices I found it easy to use. I must note that my model was 11 years old at the time of purchase (Sep '01) and it amazed me that Digitech still had the footboard for it, and shipped it to the local MARS within 2 weeks of order! Once I had the footcontroller it was extremly easy to use. I would have given it a 10 but once again I had no manual or footcontroller when I first bought it.

As far as sound, I found that ping noise I keep hearing about in a hurry on the high gain settings. If I had the manual could I have corrected this problem faster than the 3 days it took to eliminate this? I also keep reading gripes about the gain/distortion displeasures. ? I haven't had any trouble. Sounds great.

Mine is 11 years old. The production sticker on it says Dec '90. Nuff said.

Digitech send my footcontroller out fast! But it cost me 210 bucks after MARS got their end. Bummer. But I only paid $100 for the processer itself so I'm still ahead.

Overall I think it dominates any other processer i've seen. Several other local guys in the scene have commented favorably on my tone and have offered to take the GSP-21 off my hands. No deal. It's like having 10 different heads (I can mimic any rig i've ever heard easily)and half a dozen stomp boxes in one unit. Cost effective and one stomp away from switching multiple effects. You just can't beat it.

Play in a classic rock cover band. Cover bands like Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Ozzy, ....
Been playing for a long time . I'm 39 now. I use 2 100 Watt Marshall heads + 2 4/12 cabs and run the GSP 21 stereo. I have an Ibanez SV Elec. Guitar and a Takamine Acoustic. Always get very good comments on the guitar sound everywhere we play. (band is 3 piece + vocals). I have had this particular setup for the last 10 years and nothing has come up to make me want to replace it yet!
I love jammin with this unit.

it took me about 2 months to figure out how to work the entire unit. it isn't the type of unit that you just turn all the knobs until it sounds good.

the setup i was first using was some cort P.O.S. that i got at a pawn shop. im not sure what type of amp it is, but i got that at a pawn shop too. in fact, i also got the processor at a pawn shop. the guitar sounded like shit when it was only plugged into the amp, but when i used the processor, it sounded a lot better. there are about 240 different effects on the one i got so you could probably find one that sounds like your favorite artist.

i play many different types of music ranging from the clash to primus, so there has to be a certain effect on there that fits you. the thing i love about it is you can change the effects/patches around. i dont have a wah pedal, so i made a patch that almost sounds like one

Sounds digital, thers no denying it but if thats your thing then the unit provides. It does for me, very 80's an all. If anything it is a bit noisy but not too much. I compromise for the sound of this greeat unit. Not sure about the noise gate though.

Now, i'm on my second 21 pro as the first one(second hand) was faulty. i have also had an rp-1. a problem with all the units besides my present 21 PRO is that the distortions posess a kind of ring modulator sound. a fault that in my experience seems common with the units age.

It was at first a little confused to program because you don't actually see where in the cycle-menu you are. You access everything with buttons and I think it is more confortable to use a rotating knob. I tried the MIDI with a BOSS DR-5 but get a little disappointed because of the restricted program change numbers it has.

I give an 8 because of the poor sustain specially in the distortion-like effects, they produce a sudden break instead of a good taste smooth decay. It doesn't possess a tuner (what a pity) nor a harmonizer. I love the Chorus, tap-delay and Flange although it requeries to know some specific details about the size of room, frequencies, etc. Well nowdays you have to be a musiciangeener.

Taking into consideration that I previously had some plastic-things (like Zoom 3030). This is well constructed. I opened the device and everything is perfectly. If it were possible to give and advice to those Digitechs I just want to suggest that the transformator has a greater ventilation area, it tends to emulse to much heat. Respect to the Foot Controler it is easy to use, it has a LCD cristal display where you can see the name of the patch but I would add to the display the mapping for the patches (just to see what set and program you are in)

You have to take a lot of time to get to where you want with this thing. Who really has all that time to spare? It does have a lot of editing patch capabilities and controls. It's really ard to change guitars with it. You have to set up different patches for each. After using a patch for a telecaster, plug in a les paul and you get digital blow out. Too much work. Much nicer to just play and stomp a box when needed.

Can be noisy at times. Just sounds too digital and fake. My Boss stomps are much more real and full sounding. Most distortion and fuzz sounds are sort of lame. I've used it with my two solid stae Peaveys and a Fender twin. Don't get me wrong... You can eventually find some nice ear candy from this thing...It's just that it does take a search. Can be fun if you have the time..But I have found that my Boss boxes sound much more real. The totally clean and glassy sounds are the best. reverb is nice.

No problems here. I have used it gigging. I now use my "Real Tube" by Tube Works and Boss Compression Sustainer and Digital Reverb (sometimes a little Boss chorus, flange, and super phase). Anybody wanna buy this Digitech thing? e-mail me...I'll sell it to ya cheap.

Ahhh where can I start. Yeah, you can get good sounds out of it. Takes a bit of tweaking but, you can get there. I didn't get a manual with but, it seems to me to be pretty self explanatory really. The sound is ok but the distortion is lacking!
Sound Quality

The sound is good. Remember. ALL THIS DOES IS MAKE NOISE! It does not perfect everything. What people who have previously scrawled should remember is that an effects unit is not going to make everything sound great. Pickups, Amps, Amp settings, etc play a large part in the process as well. Personally, the distortion is kinda sad. Needs a little more balls to it... but, you can get what you want my playing with the digital graphics EQ. Besides the distortion everything is pretty cool. I had a zoom 505 and replaced it with this. I miss things like Chorus and Wah... but, a couple bucks on some pedals, no biggie.

It's dependable, I haven't had a problem with it. As for a gigging withit without a backup, I personally do not recommend any guitarist doing a gig without a backup for anything he is using.

Yes, believe it or not I picked it up for under 12 dollars. And it is in perfect working order. For the price I can't complain but, if I had to pay full price, I may reconsider. PS. which is the better model? The GSP-21 Pro or the GSP-21 Legend? If you know, drop me an email. petrice@provide.net

This was my first multi unit, but I got the hang of it real quick. Like the users below, pushing that damn right-arrow got old. You had to be REALLY willing to work with it to get some of the settings tweaked well (see below). Overall, this was a good LEARNING experience in the world of rack gear.
Sound Quality
:

Here we go: Thru a Marshall solid-state, it was a little harsh. Thru a power-amp into a 4x12, it was a little sterile. But into a MusicMan 65-Reverb head (2 EL-34 tubes) it sounded pretty darn good!! Direct into a mixer though, forget it - it was grainy as hell and NOISY! Like I said, if you were willing to be patient and work with it, you COULD get SOME good sounds - e.g., I really liked the multi-tap stereo delay. It could have used a LOT more available delay time. Distortions (yes, I agree) sucked - I relied more on my amps for that. Overall though, I would have to say "grainy" is the word.

It was a pretty darn dependable unit. Though doing an outdoor gig you had to be careful to shade the footpedal - a couple times the sun was right on the pedal, the plastic "swelled," and rendered the pedals useless.
I only once had a problem (right after I got it) that DigiTech later solved. I made the mistake of plugging in the footswitch while the unit was on, and fried the RAM. I mean FRIED (see cutomer service, below). There was no warning to that effect in the manual, so DigiTech very kindly declared it "not my fault" and repaired & returned the unit within a week.

During my "fried RAM" disaster, DigiTech was VERY helpful & accommodating. After I shipped them the rack for repair, they shipped it back STILL not working. They apologized, and said they would now replace it once they got this defective unit back. Well, within 36 hours of this call (and a lot of UPS-Red shipping) I had a new unit that worked perfectly.

I don't know that I would buy another unit like this. It was kind of a pain in the butt to change parameters, even out levels, etc. The sound quality seemed a tad lacking in light of the price tag. And despite my excellent experience with their Customer Service, I find that with every new DigiTech unit that comes out, the durability/sound quality are going progressively downhill. I'd rather see them turn out fewer products in favor of higher quality.
