Its pedal with 4 knobs: output, high, low, and level. If you're familiar with distortion pedals, this should be a cinch.

If you're looking for a grungy tone, this may not be the pedal you're looking for. It takes a lot of messing with the EQ to get a decent grunge sound. I run a Boss Super Overdrive in front of it and I'm able to get a much better sound.
However, this makes for a GREAT black metal pedal. If you want to sound like Mayhem, later Darkthrone, and Burzum, this is the pedal for you. The EQ is fairly responsive. This pedal is LOUD.
I'm giving this thing a 7/10 in this category only because it isn't very flexible

This thing is pretty durable. I've had it for about 5 years and this thing is in great shape. The paint is shipping a bit, but thats only a minor cosmetic flaw. The knobs seem pretty sturdy. This thing has been stomped on pretty hard over the years; I don't think i'll need a backup.

Never dealt with DigiTech, and based on the experience I've had with their pedals (this, the Hot Head, and the death metal), I won't be needing to deal with them any time soon.

It's pretty easy to use if you know how pedals work in general. But it can be a little hard to get the best sound out of it because like most distortion pedals it can be very noisy if the amp you play through has no noise gate.
Sound Quality
:

I used mostly Deans and Ibanez with it, through either a Marshall halfstack, Crate Halfstack or a Line 6 combo amp. It can be very noisy if your amp is on a high gain/distortion setting. But when I used it on a Clean, or low gain setting it wasn't noisy at all. Also it is very powerful, on a half stack, I can put the clean volume on 1 and it is louder going through the pedal than me playing on 5 on a normal distortion setting with no pedal. Overral sound is pretty good, but a $100+ distortion pedal is obviously better, this is a great pedal for those who've the economy has hit hard being only 40 something dollars

For me, I play metal and it's pretty awesome for the low growls and high gains of metal and chugging guitars. For someone actually playing grunge style music, it might be too heavy for you unless you can find a style that you like the most.
I compared it to a digitech metal pedal and a boss metal pedal, forgot the names, but it seemed to be as heavy as them, but once you get a heavy sound with it, thats it, unlike other metal pedals that allow you to change up the sound alot while keeping it very distorted.

This pedal has 4 knobs - one for volume, two EQ and a distortion level. Very easy. I bought a DOD grunge when I was 15 and had it figured out in 5 minutes, even when I had no experience of such things.

I bought a DOD grunge as one of my first distortion pedals years ago. I sooned learnt that over the top distortion pedals don't cut through with a band. They are designed for kids to make a racket in their bedroom - and indeed they sound good at bedroom levels. With a band you just get covered in fuzz and squealing feedback and it sounds awful.
After I got into noise I discovered that I liked the DOD grunge again. You can make squealing feedback and out of control sounds and I remain convinced that if it cost $200 and was called a "noise swash destroyer" then people would kill theirselves to get one. The other day I saw this pedal (the digitech reissue) in the shop and decided to try it out.
The sound is nasty and over the top. It sounds very poor, thin and noisy, but isn't nearly as extreme as the DOD grunge was. Shame. It's a decent noise pedal, but there are better ones out there. It sounds nice and heavy at home into a small amp, but a mush with a full band.
The two outputs are handy because you can create feedback loops easily.

The digitech cases are solid and have a good switch. They appear reliable. I took my pedal apart to rehouse it in a box as a feedback loop as a synth tone generator. When you take it out of the box you see that the knobs and pots are cheap plastic, the circuit board is floppy and the jacks are mounted onto the board. It is uncanily similar to the design of a a rockteck pedal put into a metal case. Deceptive appearences. I feel very sad that the old DOD pedals (with their flakiness and much hated plastic switches) seem very reliable compared to this cheap rubbish. Poor show digitech.

This is a decent pedal for anyone who plays at home into a practice amp. It will give you a heavy rock, grunge or metal tone at a cheap price. Don't expect it to sound good with a band. I found it to be a Disappointing pedal, but it's alright I guess.

I have tested it with my Fender Jaguar HH with dragster humbucker, into a Peavay 25 watt combo, and a Marshall JCM800.
Let me say, that first of all I bought this pedal some years ago, and it's my first stompbox. At that time, it sounded so ******* cool to me, but as the years have past my opionien have went from "WOW"!! too "ehw".
Right now I'm using it as a boost, and it sucks at that too.
I think the tone of it is sounding very thin and digital. Well then, it isn't analog I know. But for me, this is just sounding to fake, to be real.

But as I said, right now it's on my board, trying to act like a boost pedal. Along with my Rat2 (modded), Carl Martin Red Repeat and my Crybaby GCB95 (modded as hell!).

The Digitech Grunge is easy to use just like any other distortion stompbox. It is special in one way though. It has both an amp output and a mixer output which has some cab emulation. The cab simulation is more of a bandpass filter or 2 which cuts some low end and kills all the highs (15KHz).
For only having low and high tone controls, it offers a good deal of tonal control.
Sound Quality
:

This pedal is misnamed and should be called crunch or something to that effect. It is not for guitarists who like to "work" the distortion by adjusting the guitar's volume knob. For best results this pedal should be used with passive pickups into a "guitar" amp using 12" speakers.
Smaller speakers tend to exaggerate the highs too much and active pickups drive the pedal too hard and it gets a little muddy.
I also tried it on a Crate AC125 amp which has 2x 6" spkrs and a piezo horn. It sounded horrible until I tried the Grunge's "mixer" output. Awesome tone through an Ibanez Talman. Try the "mixer" out when running into a small practice amp to tame the crispies.

The pedal is well built. Very rugged. Stomp boxes tend to be very reliable from Digitech so a backup isn't an issue.

For hard rock or metal, this is a nice pedal. The "mixer" output is a nice feature that helps it to sound good on several different types of amps. Great pedal for the money.
Put an eq pedal next to this for more tones.

pretty straight forward. volume, highs, lows, and amount of grunge. as long as your not a complete idiot you'll be able to use it properly. The presets in the tiny manual pretty much show all you can actually do with this pedal, which isn't much. it doesn't take long to figure that it doesn't have great sound. although it is usable. I currently use it as a distortion for my bassist bass. it works surprisingly well with the right amp

I used this pedal though a esp m-200 and the tone was horrible. that i blame on the guitar though. I also put it though my ibanez sz prestige which has emg 81/85. That produced a "usable" tone, and by all means is it good. its good enough to play with but tone wise horrible. one good thing about it is that it is pretty much noise free. since there are cheaper pedals similar to this on the market i wouldn't really buy this one for its tone... or its anything.

Four knobs, for volume, low, high, and gain...it couldn't get much easier. I like it for a solo sound with the Loud knob at 1 o'clock, Low at 10, High at 2, and Grunge at 2...that gives it a thin sound if it's alone, but if you have a distortion pedal before it in the signal path it still stays rich (if fuzzy). That said, it works on its own for Mudhoney covers.

I use a Squier Strat with hot rails, a Schecter Black Hawk, and a B.C. Rich Bronze Series Warlock in drop-B into a Fender G-DEC. My effects (from the guitar to the amp) are a Morley Pro Wah, a Danelectro Chili Dog, Ibanez TS-7, Ibanez DS-7, Digitech Hot Head, and then this baby. Now first off, the thing's noisy as hell, especially with another distortion before it, but you know what, if you don't want noise you probably shouldn't use a pedal called "grunge". I play grunge-influenced noise shred, and I love using this pedal and the DS-7 for the feedback and harmonics I can get with it. I can get a thin harmonic over every fret with this thing on. Now, this pedal's not for everyone. It doesn't sound good with the gain turned down, and it really can't get, say, a classic rock or thrash metal sound, and it sounds like **** if you turn down the high, but for what it is, it's amazing.
I don't know about other people, but I haven't been able to find a use for the Mixer Out except running to two amps. It sounds flat to me.

Well...it's built like a tank, all solid metal, and I've never had it fail on me. On the other hand, it goes through batteries fast, and when the battery gets low switching gets unreliable. So I'd recommend either using a wall plug or having a backup.

Well, I've only been playing for about two years, but I've used a lot of different effects and this is one of my personal favorites. I've used it live five or six times, and it's sounded good every time. Everybody I know who's heard it loved this thing on my solos, and for controlled feedback. I really only got it because I'm a sucker for cheap things in pawn shops, but I'm glad I did. I'd recommend it to anyone playing grunge, noise, or punk music.

This thing could not be easier to use. It even comes with a manual which gives you suggestions for types of "Grunge" that you can use. And the suggestions that it comes with sound superb, especially when you filter it through a clean setting (filtering through a distorted setting doesn't go far).

I play this through a Fender G-DEC Jr. (go ahead and laugh) or a Hartke half-cabinet bass amp with a guitar head of some off-brand sort (my Youth Group can't afford a guitar amp). I play usually 2 different guitars; a Fender MIM Stratocaster, or a Gibson 1961 Melody Maker (with no modifications). And there IS a problem. For those of you who have EVER owned a Melody Maker, old or new, you know it only has one piddly pickup. A good one, but it only has one. And when you play through the Grunge with only one pickup/humbucker, the noise sets in. Its not that squealing feedback you hear, its just a crapload of humming and all sorts. Although it does sound more dense and heavy.
But then there's the Stratocaster. Everybody knows they have 3 pickups, weather it be a S/S/S or a S/S/H. I play just a standard with a S/S/S configuration (usually through the bridge and middle) and thats where this pedal really shows its stuff. The sound gets clear and you find you get just the amount of distortion and what kind of distortion you want. Thus you really exploit the tone you're looking for, even that good ol' Dimebag tone (or at least close to it).
So in short, if you're going to buy this pedal, buy it for a guitar that at least has two humbuckers. If you don't, you're in for a world of humming and agitation. But played through something like a Fender Stratocaster, you get a very wonderful bunch of crunch that would make Dimebag Darrell cry.
I'd give it a 10, but the fact that it has to be played through a double-pickup configuration to get a desirable tone just is a bit of a setback.

Its got a metal casing on it, so it'll hold up very very well, naturally. Although the "loud" knob has become slightly loose but not loose enough to where if you move it it'll pop off or move the setting (or just not work at all). I think you could probably hurl this little booger at your little brother/sister and it could stand up to the impact fairly well.

The people at the music store I went to were nice enough to let me diddle with this and several other pedals before I decided. They even provided a free battery. But I guess this part of the review is more or less directed toward Digitech. I didn't pay too terribly much for this [wonderful] pedal, I think I would rather have my father fix it (he's handy with electronics) or just buy a new one at the shop.

I have been playing for about half a year, and I like to play metal (I can play some things despite my short period of *ehm* rocking). I would much rather choose this over a Boss Metal Zone or a Digitech Metal Master/Death Metal pedal, it just has a better feel of overdrive as a whole. If you turn it off, it doesn't screw over your preset so thats really nice. If it were stolen or lost, I would be rushing to the store to get a new one ASAP!! I would DEFINITELY recommend this pedal to ANYONE who had an interest in metal/hard rock/grunge (most particularly Nirvana. Ol' Cobain liked to go heavy on the overdrive).
And they're cheap enough. $60-$70. Way cheaper if you can find one used.

I use this little beast with my Marshall 4023. The guitar I mainly use is Fender 60's telecaster with hot rails on the bridge.
Grunge gets noisy if you turn the loud knob too much. There is a lots of bass and treble! The grunge knob has very little effect on the sound (except it adds sustain the more you crank it).
If you use the amp output it sounds like metal zone, which i don't like that much. I use the mixer output. It sounds close to the Lee Jackson GP-1000 for me and it was the sound I was looking for. Alexi Laiho and Roope Latvala are using the GP-1000.
Only annoying thing is the little noise you get but that's not a big deal.

I run my Fender American Double Fat Strat, American Fat Strat Texas Special and an Ibanez RG into a 535Q Cry Baby wah (the one with a fasel inductor in it!)>Ibanez Keeley Baked Mod TS-9 > Digitech Grunge > Ibanez PH99 analog phaser > input of my Mesa Boogie DC-5. The rest of my effects, (Chorus, Tremelo and Delay) are ran in to the effects loop of my DC-5.
For the amount of dirt this pedal puts out it is astonishingly clear of noise.
I tried this pedal one time when our group was asked to play out of the blue at a Bible conference. They had the "Grunge" pedal tucked away in the back of the church and I used it to play a cover of the Evanescence song "Bring Me to Life" (a Christian version of course!) I was impressed with the sound and thought I would purchase one someday. Despite the fact my DC-5 will rock the house just fine I wanted to use this pedal to target heavy Rock/metal tones of Nickleback. It does a very good job at this and lets me dial in my rock rhythm and solo tones (using my 5 band EQ on the DC-5 to dial in lead tones.)
I have found that this pedal responds nicely to the volume control on my guitars. If I drop back the volume it cleans up, full volume = full mayhem!

4 Knobs, easy to use, I like more bassy tones and the EQ is great for tweaking the sound. Easy to get more treble and middle tones for cutting through if needs be. The loud Knob is brilliant-the pedal can get very very loud with little/no background noise. I use an OD pedal directly in front of it and this sounds amazing. Manual is decent-though I didn't need to use it at all, no real need to as it's very intuitive.

I got this pedal because it sounds different to any other Distortion pedal I've used-It's grittier, dirtier and sounds cool! It blows the other guitarists sound out of the water-which is helpful because I play lead-and he has a vox tonelab! It's easy to get metal sounds (just a bit dirtier)Not much noise either-and thats without using my Boss Noise Suppressor. I use the lowest Grunge setting and this suffices for metal sounds (i play metally type stuff), turn the grunge up and extreme distortion results-proper cool tone.
I use a Strat/Jag into Planet waves tuner pedal->Morley Wah/Vol->Diamond Comp->Vox Big Ben OD->GRUNGE->Marshall Regenerator->Marshall Vibratrem->Digiverb->Boss Noise suppressor->Peavey Windsor 100w Head/cab->Damage Control Timeline (in Effects loop)->AMP

i use this pedal every time i need an over the top distortion. It is raw, brutal and it got fat low end.
its good for Grunge, hard Rock, Stoner Rock and some rawer forms of metal. Although, if I would be in a Metal band, i would play the Boss metal Zone or the digitech Metal master instead. Tis pedal??s tone is really raw and sometimes a little too fuzzy for heavy metal, so it??s a good deal if you are in that grunge/doom/stoner etc. sound.
this pedal sounds good so far with all my other pedals. I run different kind of guitars (Humbucker-, singlecoil-, les paul-type, strato-type)through a Dunlop cry baby, then comes the "grunge", an electro harmonix little Big muff, danelectro daddy-o overdrive, EH Small Clone, EH small stone.
my unit sometimes creates an annoying very dark feedback at high volumes, but don??t forget, it??s an ANALOG pedal! (although the company is called DIGItech...)
the sound is really compressed, pitch-harmonics are easy.
What i sometimes don??t like is that the sound is not very organic. it??s fat and deep, bu it could be a little more subtle.
don??t buy this pedal if you think grunge = Nirvana. if you like to play nirvana, chose a ds-1 or something. this one is too heavy.

Strait out of the box it took about a minute to dial in something useable and about 5 to dial in the distortion tone I have been looking for for so long.
Four nobs, on and off, ain't rocket science lads.
However, just because it always sounds good doesn't mean its a good pedal. Just means most of the tweakings already been done for you and you therefore have a less versetile pedal. This may not the right choice for complete tone junkies.

My Set up;
Fender Jagmaster with a Super Distortion in the bridge-- E13 Never Drive (octave up+ fuzz)--- Electro Harmonix Poly Chorus--- Snarling Dogs Wah/ Ring Modulator--- MXR Blue Box--- Grunge--- 65w Crate Amp.
No I'm not a grunger or a Cobain wannabe. I play in the stlye of Stooges, Melvins, Sonic Youth, Lightning Bolt, Black Flag, Skullflower, Sunn 0))). This pedal fits all those needs.
This is my fith distortion pedal and I've finaly found the keeper. The others were;
Boss Mega Distortion; very glazzed sounding, I like my distortion to spit a bit, boss pedals seem to be polite, generic and safe. Not what I want from a dist box!
Pro Co Turbo Rat; an overdrive pedal not a distortion. Great for ACDC but doesn't go to the extreems some of us want.
Little Big Muff; big disapointment. Althoug very dark the actual fuzz/ distortion seemed a bit wimpy and the tone of my wank guitar shone thru at all times
Metal Muff; extreemly versetile and comes with a treble boost. However it doesn't matter how you tweak it you can't get away from its slightly hollow, scooped mid sound. The distortion does not go to the extream of the Grunge and it was all but impossible to get feedback out of it (thou I expect it was designed to do that)
Grunge; Rich, warm, fat and ALIVE sounding.
With the grunge all the way ccwise you get something like Stooges Raw Power Sound, all the way cwise and you get a very useable wall of sound that still maintains not clarity and definition, is sensetive to pick attack (as much as it can be when screaming)and has buckets of personality. Not hugly versetile but my personal distortion wet dream.
The low and High controls cover a wide range of useable sounds thou don't go to ridiculous extreems ala Electro Harmonix. I find myself turning down the treble to compensate for the top end the grunge control adds (it is a fuzz distortion after all)
I have not played with the loud control yet.

I was actually surprised by the type of sounds that came out of this pedal. Once I turned down the high/treble knob and increased the low/bass knob I was able to dial in some great sounds. I consider this a fuzz/distortion pedal. It can definitely be used for hard rock and metal. It is not good for jazz or blues. With my Les Paul and an Epi Valve Junior, I was able to get it to sound very close to the Randy Bachmann "American Woman" tone which made me quite happy.

For this particular pedal I can get most of the guitars from Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses, Greenday, and many others. The distortion is amazing. I am using a Washburn BT4 guitar and a Peavey Blazer 158. The pedal can be noisy or soft depending on what the "loud" setting is on. The effects always sound excellent.

Well, I don't know what the rigs of my favourite artists sound like, so I don't know. You can get the guitar tone of the new Helmet recording, Monochrome, when turning grunge down to about 6 o'clock and the high at about 2 o'clock.
I'm using this with a roland micro cube, through which it sounds decent, and the clean channel of a Marshall Lead 100 MOSFET, my main amp through which it sounds horrible - Waaaay to much high end. The low end was alright, but even with the high knob turned all the way down, my ears were hurting after playing for just a few minutes. The thing has lots of high end (did I mention, that it has a lot of high end?) and delivers a good chunky sound (when you turn grunge up far enough) and also lots of low end, think it would be a good tool for bassists, too. With Humbuckers it isn't noisy at all, even when run with a power supply, with singlecoils there is loads of buzz, but youre not gonna use this with singlecoils...

Just make sure you don't use it on batteries, the pedal eats them up pretty fast.

I play Stoner Metal with some -core influences, its not a good match, way too shrill and too sterile. I'm playing for 2 years now I own a roland Microcube, a Marshall lead 100 Mosfet head with a 4x10 box (maybe thats why it sounds that shrill) a cort zenox z22, a fender mexican standart strat, a Danelectro Wasabi overdrive (rules), a DOD Fx20c Phaser and a Behringer AB200 Ab-box.
If it where stolen or lost I would be angry, cause I'm gonna send this back to the store soon, would be sad for the few bucks. Next time I'd probably buy the digitech hot head or something with a warmer sound.
I love the looks of the Pedal, the Chunky sound, when you use the mixer out to record something and its price. I hate the piercing low end and its cold, sterile tone. My favourite feature is the battery case under the footswitch.
Compared it to my wasabi overdrive when pushing the drive channel of my amp with it, found it sounded much better.
When I used it at my band practice, the other members shouted at me to "turn that shit down"...

I'm surprised at how good this thing sounds. Generally speaking I'm not into Distortion. I'm more of an Overdrive guy. But I was looking for a pedal to plug into the front of my Peavey Classic 100 that would give me a Metal, rockin', Mesa type of tone. My amp does Classic Rock and all but high gain stuff quite well. I wanted something that picks up where my amp left off and that would give me a bit more modern tone. This was a perfect choice.
It isn't like other distortion boxes I've tried in the sense that it isn't overly buzzy. If you like buzz, it can be dailed in so that it buzzes like crazy. But the buzz can be pretty much dialed out too. The "low" and "high" tone knobs enable you to customize the tone and really make it your own pedal. A "mid" control would be nice but there is a decent amount of versatility as it is.
I'm impressed with how it still allows the guitar's pickups to have some characteristics that shine through. It's obvious when I change from neck to bridge pickup and each guitar takes on it's own characteristics in many ways. The guitars I'm using are: Epiphone Elitist LP, EBMM EVH, PV Wolfgang, a guitar I made with dual humbuckers.
I'm use to distortion sounding fairly generic, harsh and one dimenstional. This has good usable tone. The compression blooms and morphs into overtones which impresses me. I've not gigged with it yet but I'm confident that prudent adjusting it will work just in in this regard. There is almost nothing about the tone of this cheap little box that is bad. It doesn't clean up very well with volume adjustment from the guitar. And the "grunge" knob affects the gain from relatively light to almost over the top. But it won't go from almost clean to over the top. It won't do Blues or styles other than Metal or the Alice in Chains kind of Grunge. So if you need something else, look elsewhere.
I agree that it sounds more Metal/Hard Rock than Grunge. Of course I know what Grunge music is. But I don't really know what a "Grunge" guitar tone is or how you can classify something as Grunge the way you can classify Metal and Jazz tone. Basically it has the tone I was looking for regardless of what the name is. By using an eq in my loop I can make it sound amazing. Shockingly good for the price.
My rating of 10 takes into consideration the price of $40. If it were $150, I'd probably rate it an 8 or 9. As it is, it's an amazing value and a great way to add dimension to your rig if you're in the same position I was. And I use mine with a Daisy Chain so I can't testify to how well it works wtih batteries. The battery that came with it new was almost dead.

Very Easy too use this pedal , There are four knobs, Level, Hi, Low and Grunge i think. The hi and low are your EQ controls, Grunge knob controls the amount of distortion and Level controls the actual volume of the pedal (works best at half way to full). The manual for the pedal is good, it offers you some ideas for settings but theyre not good but hey its handy for pedal newbies.

This pedal really should be named "METAL" instead Of "GRUNGE".
The Grunge knob doesnt make a difference: it sounds practically the same at 10 as it does at 1. The only difference is the sustain is cut. Not all GRUNGE is bone crushing distortion. i use it with my MG30DFX and my JCM900. Big Tonal difference i know but it sounds a bad kind of dirty through both.
I tried to get a grunge sound out of it by trying to get the same kinda sounds a kurt cobain would have but it wasnt for happening.
In the end i gave up on this pedal and took it back to the shop.

But trust me if your looking for a grunge/punk sound buy an Ibanez smash Box (SM7). It does this genres job so much better than the Grunge pedal does:

I use a 70's SG and a Danelectro 56 Pro though this thing and it sounds amazing. This pedal is definently suited to those with heavier music in mind. It's relatively quiet (no nasty background fuzz or anything) even when the Grunge is turned up to full. The pedal has a real underlying 'boom' when you turn the low right up. I tend to leave the low on full and have the high and grunge 3/4's of the way round and it really is a hell of a sound. I've been asked to turn to low end down at gigs more than once as the sound technichans are worried I'll blow the PA! It isn't very versatile though, only suited to a few sounds and the gain control doesn't have much effect over the actual sound.

I mostly play grunge and metal and this is perfect just for that. It's designed for those who aren't technically great on the guitar. At the same time, it sounds great during the few solos that I decide to put in. My last fuzz box was a Danelectro French Toast pedal, but this definently gives enough fuzz and 'nasties' to keep me happy. I've been playing for about 4 years and my only other pedal at the mo is a Boss flanger. They are both such powerful pedals that they don't work very well together, the flange always seems far too pronounced. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it sounds so weak when the low is turned down, but that may just be because I'm so used to having it on full. Also, it is definently way louder than I'd ever use. Apart from that, a F*CKING GREAT PEDAL!! BUY IT! NOW! No, I mean, actually......NOW!!!

Simple stomp box. 4-knobs, Loud(volume/Gain), Low, High, Grunge(distortion). Heavy cast metal case. Good switching. Pretty darn sturdy.........AC plug or 9-volt. Im giving it a 5 because it is not easiy controlable in my set up. Too much gain(gotta set it way down compared to my other pedals). Too much high(hiss) but can be tammed. Needs to be tweaked alot different than my other pedals. Not a easy user freindly distortion.

Playing hard body Gibsons thru a Marshall JTM-45 reissue. Signal chain= Wah pedal(area-51),Bad monkey(OD), Double Muff(OD-Fuzz), Grunge(big noise), Small stone(phaser), Delay(digital).
This pedal is alittle over the top for me. It does seem noisey but its got ALOT of GAIN...Seems to work ok with other pedals. Im trying to make it work. I have to turn the volume gain way down or it just screams(takes over) compared to my other pedals. It has alot of bottom. It has way more treble--too much for my taste. I needed a neu-metal type sound for the new thrashy stuff. Not sure if this is answer? It just seems pretty uncontrolable, Not enough range in the EQing to be great? Its ok. It has a nice price tag. Digitech should make this with a mid-shift knob. It needs something more?

I have a Washburn X-series with Floyd Rose, I use it along the Boss OD-3, the Digidelay, and a Dunlop Crybaby. The Od-3 is for blues and rock, and this one is for heavy music. (Progressive rock, heavy metal, etc). I think it hasn't attained a legendary status becasue of the grunge labeling. That is kind of discriminating as many people won't even test it as it says Grunge. Personally it doesn't sound grunge. For some reason Cobain used the Boss DS-2. They should change the name, it would sell better. For solo that outstand the rest of your band it us excelent, and for rhythmic parts too. But be careful with the treble on your amp, don't put it too high, otherwise harmonics and finger tapping would make you go deaf.

I was even about to buy a new amp before I bought this pedal, but I'm not gonna now. Why would I? I have a relatively cheap great sounding setup now. I have to give this unit a '10' based on it being exactly what is says it is. Very 'grungy' sound. Pretty harsh sounding, and very powerful. Sounds like Navara all the way. The tone controls are very good, the sound responds well to them being tweaked. Very powerful bass when the 'low' knob is turned up. Harsh as hell when the 'high' knob is turned. When you turn both the tone knobs up full this pedal is a very good metal sound (Chug, Chug, Chug). Don't expect this thing to make people cry, not for blues or classic rock AT ALL. I would say the mids on this pedal are cut, could do with a mid control. Then it wouldn't be a grunge pedal anymore. Definately an analogue design, no compression at all. Just the way it should be.

It's a very good product. Does what it says on the tin. Brash sound. My amp is a '62 brit valve amp, I didn't think it could make such a bright sound as this pedal gives me. I first started using this through a Peavey VTM 60 half-stack using a Washburn 7-string and a Washburn DB32 on the low gain input. It really doesn't work well on the high gain input. I used it on this amp, until I replaced the cabinet from a crappy Behringer 412s to a Peavey MS412. After that, there were too much razor highs with the pedal. Then I started using it with my old Marshall MG10CD, and it seems to work better with that (probably because of no equalizer and that its solid-state rather than tube). On that amp I could easily get a Slayer or Pantera tone out of it. I could also get newer Judas Priest and Disturbed out of it. The only problem I have with it is that the sound is kind of sterile and artifical, but then again its a distortion, not an overdrive. Overall, I'm satisfied with the pedal.

Easy to get a good sound out of it. Start with the tone knobs at 12 o'clock and the grunge knob at 7 o'clock (minimum) and it already sounds good!

I've been searching for years for this kind of distortion. And now, all of a sudden, it comes from DigiTech for just 45 bucks!!
I like a distortion that is fat/thick in the mids (for soloing) and at the same time staccato on the low E and A strings (for power chords).
Uptil now I always used a combination of a overdrive (Boss, Ibanez) or wahwah (Morley) followed by a distortion (RAT) to get this kind of sound. This DigiTech does the job on it's own. It's raw, fat and has kind of a spike in the mid. And yes, the low E and A strings remain staccato, even with the grunge control set at maximum.
It's not noisy at all (high control set at 11 o'clock).
I use it with my Gibson's (Flying V and SG'61 reissue), Strat and Squire'51. The Strat sucks (single coils) but the other guitars sound great, great, great.
Amplifier is a Behringer transistor amp.

If it were stolen I would buy it again. Maybe I'm gonna buy a second one for backup anyway.

Simple.
Loud button controls the volume of the distortion. Good idea if you want your clean to be as loud as your distortion, or even better if you want to scare the hell out of your audience by switching to distortion that is 10x louder than it's clean.
Low knob controls the low setting. Any setting under 12 o'clock is a cut, while any setting over 12 o'clock is a boost.
High knob is the high end's equivalent of the Low knob.
Grunge is the gain knob; the higher the grunge, the higher the gain (which in the end is only the amount of feedback, harmonics, and sustain).

Everyone read this: this is a GRUNGE pedal. It is designed to be HARD and INTENSE. That is EXACTLY what it is.
There is nothing romantic or mysterious about this distortion. When you stomp it, it'll stomp on you.
I was actually surprised how little noise there was on this pedal (considering its hardness). I use an American Deluxe Strat with Samarium Cobalt pickups, so there is no hum to add noise. I'm sure if I was using a lesser strat, this thing would be much noisier.
Everything plays out as it should, but I'm giving this pedal -1 for it's calibration. I find that the lows need to be very high and the highs need to be very low for this pedal to sound good. If the Low is set to anything less than 3 o'clock, the distortion sounds flat. If the High is set to anything higher than 1 o'clock, the distortion sounds very staticy and EXTREMELY cheap. Also, I don't see the pedal having any practical use over 11 o'clock.
I guess what I'm getting at here is that the Loud and High knobs are always set very low, while the Low knob is cranked.
Also, this distortion is very intense; I said that already. Don't expect to sound bluesy or anything. I would even get a 'calmer' distortion or overdrive pedal when you dont feel like making people deaf.

This pedal and my guitar work in tandem to give me a unique tone that is all my own. I don't want to sound like anybody else, and this pedal prevents that for me.
If this pedal was called Black Pepper or Galley Oar, you wouldn't know what the hell to make of it... but it is called Grunge, and that is exactly what you get.
This is fantastic distortion for any price, let alone for $50. For that price, you could get some Dano pedal that would make whatever you plugged into it sound like Metallica, even if it were a banjo. This distortion works with your guitar instead of over it.
Again, -1 for the knob calibration... this pedal can really sound awful if you fart around with the knobs.

one word: POWER. it has Great, solid, powerful sound. I Use a Fender showmaster, with 2 seymour duncan buckers, and i play through a line 6 spyder 50W, and a marshall AVT50 half stack. i sat down at guitar center witht he "wall of pedals" i tried and tested every distortion pedal they had, and this one rocked them all. amazing in a solidstate, beats out the boss metalzone and any of the other "metal" pedals, they simply dont get as solid a sound as this. you can get anything from chunky rhythm to piercing leads out fo this beast, from punk to prog rock to rock to numetal to metal. the 2 tone knobs are sensitive and sweet. The grunge knob isnt very sensitive, it basically just increases the sensitivity of your playing nuances and sustain. i play rock in general, with any adjective put inf ront, and this fits them all if you like to have some power behind your playing, plain adn simple, it beat out 150$ pedals, and there were over 40 distortions on there, for 45$ this thing is a steal that could be worth over 100$.

Its a no brainer. Loud - is volume, to protect your ears as well as other furry lil creatures in the immediate area, keep at a level of 3 (~ of 9 o'clock if you're used to that sense)
Lo for lows. High for the high.
Grunge isn't obvious but it kicks in the best sustain you can get for the price...it also adds a hint of saturation to your distortion.

I play everything from rock, praise worship, blues to Funk.
I don't know if its very useful in all genres...but at such cheap price... this is SOLID.
I broke my first DOD grunge because of the stupid footswitch, lasted at least 5 years. I bought another off of ebay, used ofcourse, someone opened and tweaked with it and I have rewire it, but at one point, the wires got cut, so I'm too lazy to repair...and when I saw this for barely 65$...it was a steal. I'm surprised no one buys it, the GRUNGE factor perhaps. I don't know if this best for METAL, since the Heavy Metal soundclips at the DIGITECH site were pretty convincing.
I BOUGHT THIS 3 TIMES. That's how good and DECENT this pedal is if many were to say this wasn't the best.
I've tried what EHX BIG MUFF and Dble MUFF. latter sucked. Former sounds pretty good at the store, didn't try it on my gear but I bet everyone has one because that too is alright...
I also own TECH 21's XXL Pedal, provides sadly fair distortion, decent
TUBE/SAG emulation as well as Fuzz...but overall this is a BETTER pedal I find. I'd give the sound a 9 since, #1 who knows if there's a kick ass pedal out there. 2# I liked the XXL for its LEAD GUITAR CHARACTER, it sags and sings and this just kinda doesn't stand out tonewise if you're into bluesy character singing tones...I mean the other pedal freakin sings...
nonetheless...this pedal has power, enough mid to cut through the mix, great for tapping solos as well other classic metal antics.Ofcourse, nothing a delay and such can't fix to add more character.
I owned the first one for a long time and never really needed a companion pedal for at least 5 years. I've been sad since it broke down. Today I bought it and very glad to have done so for the 3rd time. WE WERE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER!!! hahahaha.
Oh, if you like Radiohead's Creep chunky parts...THIS WILL DO JUST FINE. Alice in Chains. Weezer. Definitely my favorite pedal.

Well its got 4 knobs and its very easy to find a good sound because none of the sounds (settings) are really awful, each setting is unique... I dont have any editing patches because its worked everytime and there is no malfunction. My unit hasn't been upgraded...

Ummm, just a cheap Fender amp, umm i take it on shows but they aren't my amps, and i use a B.C. Rich Warlock, and i got the pickups upgraded to something, im not really to sure, i dont really pay attention to that, as long as the chic at the store says its good, i might buy it! The noisiest setting would be insane!!! I love it, just make sure you dont put the loud level over 3! The effects always sound great but it also depends on your pickups, your tone and your amp settings. The sound of my favorite artists i get are probably Morbid Angel and Nirvana. Morbid Angel is a Death Metal group that i just love dearly and i was trying out both the Death Metal pedal and Th e Grunge and the Grunge was better and had more of a clear tone and it was heavier!Distortion settings is like a whole pedal set up and put into one single box, thetre are l;imits but its good for my band!

If it was stolen or lost I dont think i would buy it again because it was just alittle pricy. I love the sound quality and its potential, it durability, its simplicity, its physical look, the paint job! I hate the price and thats about it. My favourite feature is just in between the insane level and the heavy distortion, i sorta made it mself, the setting is...
knob 1)3
knob 2)9
knob 3)6
knob 4)8 and a half
with your treble all the way up and your bass middle on the clean setting and it sounds wacko man (try it!)... I wouldn't compare this product to anything else. I was looking for an extremely electrified, rip-your-face-off tone, e.g., Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom...found in in the Grunge. Went to the local guitar shop, twisted gain up, loud knob (level) moderate, lows and highs from ~1-3 o'clock and plugged in. For a $40 box, I was very impressed and brought it home that day.
As for the manual, I didn't really need it. The pedal is pretty simple, unless you don't know how to change the battery or something, or to unplug the input cord to save batteries.

I play a Gibson SG '61 Reissue and a 1987 EMG-loaded Peavey Nitro I Custom. Sounds okay with my SG and it's '57 Classic pickups, but not really the tone I was going for. As for the Nitro, the EMG-81 is perfect for this pedal. Maybe even too much gain? To get even more sustain out of the setup, I threw an overdrive pedal before the Grunge pedal and it brought the lead tones out even more, with even more sustain.
As I mentioned, I was going for that very high gain, electrified, but tight sound of Children of Bodom. Alexi Laiho of CoB uses Lee Jackson GP-1000 preamp and Peavey power amp, but due to $$$ I could not afford this setup...which is why I was looking for that sound in a pedal. The Grunge is really not far off from that tone.

It's a DigiTech, and most of their stuff is built like a tank. Solid, metal housing, nice rubber grip on bottom, grip on top of pedal too. Easy battery access, good (12-16 hours or so) battery life, but I use an adapter. As long as you've got a fresh 9 volt or a power supply, nothing to worry about if you're gonna gig. Some boxes don't always turn on when you go for the switch and need it most, but that's not a concern at all here.
If something did happen, it's covered by warranty anyway, but I can't say what DigiTech's customer service is like...never needed it with any of my DigiTech stuff.

I give the Grunge a very solid 9-10. I found the sound I was digging for right here, and for $40. Not bad at all. I like it enough that I'd go ahead and buy a replacement if mine were to get lost or destroyed.
If you've been looking for a very high gain sound that's tight and maintains definition and cuts through the mix, give this thing a try. I had heard about the Grunge but never considered it since it was cheap and looked a little iffy with the graphics on the box, but once I actually plugged into it, I was definitely impressed.

Usually a "7" means "just this side of sucks". Not so. It just means that this pedal can crank out LOTS of different sounds and it will almost certainly take tweaking to find your sweet spot. 4 knobs and they all serve a purpose. Level(D-tech's marketing dept calls it "loud"),
Low(they mean it), Hi(ouch), and "Grunge" which is sort of, yet not quite, a distortion level knob. Don't plan on stepping on this and having your dream sound come out of it. It'll take some trial and error.
Sound Quality
:

The "8" may be a bit generous, but I'm rating it for what it is - a low cost 2nd line distortion pedal made with a specific purpose in mind. I play everything from rock to blues to funk to r&b to praise & worship.....you get the idea. My sounds need to believably cover a lot of ground. I've been using a Turbo Rat for a couple years for all distortions, which is not the best for heavy rhythms or low leads that need to cut through. This pedal has what I've been missing - a SOLID bottom end without the mids scooped out so low that the sound doesn't carry. This guy can probably rock with just about anything that doesn't run on tubes.(hey, whaddya want for $40?) Kinda have to watch the high end though. Turn that up much past halfway and you get a REAL thin razorlike tone. Very irritating. A "mid" control would've been nice. The "grunge" knob is, aside from the low end, what makes this unique. It takes the intensity off the distortion without decreasing the actual distortion amount. The only real downside to this unit is that it doesn't mix well with other effects. I run this before a crybaby>>MXR phase 90>>Yamaha Chorus>>Danecho Delay>>Peavey Bandit. Add any of these and the sound loses it's gut and becomes very processed sounding. Oh well, the reason I got it was to stand alone.

I guess I covered most of this earlier. Only things I would add or stress are that this is NOT a "set it and forget it" pedal. It can make many different sounds and it may take some adjusting to get a curl at the corners of your mouth. Also, this pedal is made to ROCK. If you play anything that just requires a little boost or a "creamy" sound, look elsewhere. This pedal has a high end that gets VERY harsh and edgy if pushed. I bought this pedal for situations where I need a "give me your attention or I'll take it from you" sound. NOT for polite playing. If you want a pedal that gives the rest of the band whiplash while they're trying to figure out where THAT sound is coming from, this just might be your boy.

i am using a few fenders with invaders at the bridge. into an ibanez tb100h into tb412 and hartke vx3500.i personally love the sound of this pedal. i got it to replace my fabtone. it is grinding, heavy and fuzzy. could use a db or two more volume, but i like distortion to be LOUD! my fabtone didnt have as smooth of a center of unity gain with the two tone knobs(also low and high), so it sounded much more filterish than this unit. i was not able to find any of these at local shops to try for myself so i was left with reviews and sound clips. i was partially expecting a ds-2. the whole "nails the nirvana sound" made me a bit reluctant to get this as kurt utilized ever so boosted mids, where as i prefer a deep drop in that range. this pedal delivers both with equally good results, but i still have my preference. this pedal has a nice thickness to it. its not to over bearing. i have all but the highs cranked. havent used it with my band yet, so cant say how it is in a band setting.
so far, i have been able to get a gluey porch treatments buzzo, an in utero kurt, a live at the astoria kat, a bigmuff steve, some self titled korn, some chimaira blasphemer and my own signature tone.
i use a ring mod, two phasers, synthwah and whammy. it works well with all of those.

Easy to use, 4 knobs and on/off pedal. I wish the knobs would be labeled better...I mean, instead of Level is says Loud and instead of Gain it says Grunge, which is lame and somewhat confusing the first time you use it. There is no control for Mids, and that sucks! I would gladly give up the Gain control for a Mid knob (which is the knob setup that the Digitech Death Metal has)

First of all, let me say you can get some GREAT sounds with this pedal but it's easier to get CRAPPY sounds out of it. So make sure to tweak the controls and find your tone before you say "man this sucks." I agree with the first guy who reviewed this pedal, it is a METAL pedal. I actually went to my local guitar shop to use the Digitech Death Metal and when I was done trying it I tried this pedal out. And this pedal sounds much more suited for death metal and black metal than the Digitech Death Metal! This thing has really powerful EQ, so you can really add a ton of bass or treble depending what sound you want. It doesn't have much background hiss either. I play Speed/Thrash Metal, Death Metal and some Black Metal. For Death and Black Metal this pedal is good, however for Speed Metal you might want to try the Digitech Metal Master or Boss Metal Zone.

It's easy to be used as a pedal, but it's not quite easy to be used as a pedal for the grunge sound! The suggested settings on the manual (which is well written) are good starting points, otherwise you may need to twist the HIGH and LOW a while to figure out where the desired sound hides. But there is just where the surprise comes in...

Guess what, this little baby can do BLACK METAL! As long as you keep the HIGH above 3:00, and full crank the distortion (GRUNGE) knob. You may also need an external EQ if you want more bass. Digitech should rename it as Black Master or Death Viking or something. Trust me I'm a die-hard metalhead and I know what I'm saying. This one sounds a little more gentleman and more modern than the DOD grunge, and is more suitable for black metal than grunge, though it surely can do some not-so-dirty types of grunge (like those in Nirvana's Nevermind) or Green day-ish punk-pop as well. But then you better keep the LOW and HIGH under 12:00.

The painting has some minor flaws. Other than that it's very solid. Much better than the DOD version.

Never need to deal with them and I think this is the best customer support. Their website provides most of the information I need. I've emailed DOD once and they replied in a few days, but I'm not sure whether they're the same persons at Digitech.

I was originally going for the Digitech Deathmetal but I finally came home with this one. I'm not trying to say that it's a better metal distortion than the others. If you're looking for a traditional heavy metal sound or pure death metal sound you should look elsewhere. But if you play some certain kind of black metal and couldn't get your dream sound from the effects you owned, or if you want to create your own sound from a small compact unit, you really should give this one a try.
