this was the first pedal i got (I only have 2) I got it about 2 years ago when I had only been playing ~1 1/2 years. I had a lot of trouble figuring this out at first. and then I kinda let it sit for a year. then I downloaded the manual about a year ago. If you read the manual it is easy to use.

right now I'm using a godin sd and a 1969 ampeg b25. The pedal is good for stuff like chorus's and flanger's but is a piece of crap for distortion. the High gains are just weak, so this IS NOT A PEDAL FOR HEAVY METAL (which is what I play) no matter what I tried to dial in still just wasn't good. The distortion is even sh**tier if the noise gate isn't on. You need to turn on the noise gate for every effect otherwise its to hissy. The drum machine is ok it works and is a good way to practice rhythm and it has a metronome but it's not an awesome drum machine it doesn't tell you the actual BPM but it is an decent addition.

The wah pedal part of it has never worked. I tried messing with turning it on or off and it still doesn't work. about 2 months ago i put it in my guitar bag/case thing with the adapter on top of it and when I got to practice one of the buttons had been smashed in. I unscrewed the whole thin and took the broken button out. now I have to stick a hair pin in to change the settings (which sucks). I would not gig with this

NOT FOR METAL PUNK HARDCORE etc. cool flangers/chorus's though. I totally need a decent distortion though seeing how my amp has none. good for non heavy stuff and making weird sounds (which is cool) not professional. Its a good introduction to a lot of different sounds at a cheap price. It is what it is for ~100$ it gives you a lot of some things.

The manual that comes with all the RP pedals are usually pretty easy to comprehend.I mean c'mon this isn't exactly rocket science we're talking about here.I just picked this unit up a couple of days ago from a private dealer for the very low sum of $30.00,and he also threw in at no extra cost,a RP-7 Valve processor. How ******** cool is that? These RP's are very easy to program.Within minutes,I had all the settings that I needed and I was ready to roll.Mine didn't come with the manual and I had never used the expression pedal before,so I went to Digitech's website and was able to download it for free.

I am using my ever so trusty 2006 MIM Fender Strat and my 1997 Crate GX-65 combo amp which makes a very good mix with this pedal.I had just recently gotten rid of a RP-50 that I had owned for over 5 years which didn't sound good with my Crate, but for some reason, the RP-80 blends very well with my current set up.As I previously mentioned,I had no problem getting the settings that I needed, and as a result, they came out sounding really great. The effects on this are nothing short of spectacular as far as I'm concerned.I'm very pleased with this pedal.

Considering that I used a RP-50 for over 5 years at over 100's of shows without having any problems,I don't think that this one will give me any issues,Digitech products seem to be made very well, and I am a believer in the motif that if you take proper care of your equipment it will last you a lifetime.I believe that I could use this without any backup at all.I have faith in it.

I've only dealt with the company as far as getting a copy of the manaul which was a free download, and inquiring about getting an adaptor for the RP-7 Valve which was given to me with this. They responded back to me within 24 hours, which IMO,constitutes very good customer service.

I have been playing for over 35 years now and if anything ever happened to this pedal,I would definately get another one. This is a bargain for those of us who are on a tight budget and cannot afford to buy boutique pedals and have a fancy pedalboard set-up.This pedal covers the whole spectrum as far as having a complete setup goes.

Sound is awfull, I mean all the distorsions, I mainly bought this for the distortion effect and WAH WAH, both were so unsatisfyin' for me that i nearly started to cry when i heard what sound's a Zoom G2 had compared to this piece of plastic.
I use a Ibanez S-seriez out of the 90's whit a Dimarzio humbucker and 2 sinlge coils. The sound trough the clean channel of my Vox is awsome "it's not the guitar the fault". So I mean that this unit is crap for any hard stuff like metal, power metal and others. Solos sound clean at maximum drive LOL...
If you want to play stuff like santana or you want a mild overdrive kinda' stuff this is a very decent sounding tool, but otherwise avoid it, buy something whit more gain like boss me8, or Zoom G2.1U or what you think it'll be fitn' you...

It's the best tool for annoyin' your neighbours though "trough a 20 watt amp"...

I originally used this with a Epiphone LP Standard and a MIM Stratocaster. It quite noisy without the noise gate on, so basically you have to use the noise gate.
I was pretty happy with the chorus, wah, and whammy effects. The amp models were not very satisfying. I found myself constantly tweaking them to no avail. Plus, EQ values are all digital so 1-4 cuts, 4 is the middle, and 5-9 is a boost. It sort of limits your options in that respect.
I used it with a Roland Cube 30 watt amp. When running a rectifier or high gain amp model through the clean channel on my amp, the distortion sounded very tinny and processed. Not like a chainsaw in a tunnel as some solid state amps can sound, but nothing like a tube amp either. My Line 6 spider did a much better job of emulating a Marshall or Mesa.
However you do get a few diffrent types of wah effects, Crybaby and Boutique off the top of my head. I was quite satisfied with those.
Theres also a bunch of different types of delay... analog, digital, ping pong and they can go up to 2 seconds.
The whammy pedal is also pretty sweet. It has a bunch of different settings. It can go up or down one to two octaves. It also doubles as a harmonizer.

The pedal broke after about a week. Somthing came loose and it only stays in the down position. I was quite disappointed, but nevertheless it is made out of plastic and definitely wasn't designed for playing out. Other than that nothing has shorted out and none of the jacks have stopped working.

If you want a ton of effects for under a hundred bucks its a great deal! If you went out and bought everthing seperately you would probably spend over a grand. The Digitech Whammy alone is over two hundred bucks.
The only beef I have is with the amp models, but hey, if you want a great sounding amp go out and buy a tube amp!

I'm running this with a Carvin DC135 (strat setup guitar) and PRS McCarty hollowbody. I use it with a Bose PAS system. Sounds decent. I agree with the other reviewers though, it does not sound great if you're going into a standard power am - I have a rack system too and it didn't sound real good. But, thru the PAS, it's not bad. For my band scenario, i also use it going straight thru the mixer into the PA and it works pretty well there.
The effects are decent but do take a bit of tweaking.

basic stuff for a modler just select a catagory, pickup, wah compresser, amp model, noise gate, 3 brand eq, effect, delay, reverb and exprestion controll then pick the setting you want. when you want to store you press the store button once select where you want the patch to go then press it again.
the down side is that you are limited to one effect at a time and the only way to turn them on or off is to set them to the exprestion pedal. it takes a few minets fiddeling round with but its very easy to get the hang of.
Sound Quality

the sounds on this peddal are quite good there are many effects, all your standard modulation effects and there are some pitch shifting effects as well. there are three types of delay with up to two seconds of delay and there are many types of revurb. i rarely use the pickup simulator and the wah(iv got a crybaby classic) but the wah is usable, the noise gate does its job perfectly.
the main cause of debate is the distortion which some people like and some hate, personaly i think the distortion is great on certain modes(try r9) but i always use a boss od-1(a ten quid belringer pedal would do the job) as it lacks a certain kick.

At first i found this difficult to get great sounds out of. The built in are..ok but i wanted more. The great thing was finding the forum on digitechs support site...stacked full of great sounds and the pedal came alive for me. Just click through what values are on the patch and store it. Everything from soft solo to death metal...great stuff. Editing patches is slow and can be confusing. Im thinking of upgrading to a boss ME-50 as its easier to adjust.
The manual is good and runs through all settings. Its a keep as if you want your own sounds you'll need it. Maybe its me but i cant remember the settings without it lol.

Im by no means a great guitarist ive been seriously practicing for 3yrs before that on and off a few yrs. I have 4 guitars (main one is an epiphone zakk wylde with emg 81,85 fitted) i use a behringer GMX 212 amp. sound now is sweet.
The noise gate is good. the sounds are great..i cant say i like the acoustic sound. My favourite is the humbucher to single coil and vise versa...cool extra.

I like to play metallica, nirvana and anything metal, Especailly 70's brit metal. The pedal copes with this real well.
if it was stolen i would go for the boss due to ease of use but its a great starter pedal.
Love the sounds you can get out of it. Hate how complicated it is to get them. Follow the boss lead...give me some nobs to dial in sounds and use the 2 pedals better

I use this one with an old Samick guitar and a crate 15W amp, along with a Ibanez DSC 10 digital chorus. I like a lot hard rock, some alternative and others. the effects i like the most are the phaser, delay, reverb, and the noise gate is awesome. Other effects are Ok, although amp modeling could be better if it had harder metal tones

I am not a proffessional player,i??ve heard also other expensive pedals before buying this (zoom, boss), and i can say that this thing is damn good(also taking in count the price)and has nothing to envy on most expensive pedals. very happy with it

I have to agree with most of what is said about this unit. For $80, it is a deal! I've played for over 15 years and have scads of equipment, guitars, racks, tube amps, the works. The key to a lot of these pedals, like the PODS, are the that the main effects they give you are ok, but most of what people create and post on the internet is sound bettert. This unit is VERY easy to use, I figured it it out in under 10 minutes. Piece of cake.
It is easy to get a good sound. Plug and play, seriously. Again, the patches that you find online can be hit or miss, but it's really about playing with it. I've found one patch that is just a spot on Marshall with a Les Paul. It sounds absolutely killer. The verbs and delays are decent. I wouldn't say the wah is anything to write home about.
I have two sets equipment I work with - one my rack and tube amp, the other a Bose PAS system for small gigs. The RP80 sounds great thru the Bose, plus it's real small and easy to pack up and gig with.
Manual is easy to understand, like most Digitech products.

The 40 presets give you a range of sound. Some are good, others you'll never use. Again, hit the Digitech forum, you can use either RP50 or RP80 patches. You'll find GnR, Santana, Zep, Floyd, U2, country, rockabilly...etc. Just about everything you can imagine. Just either print out the settings or write em down and start editing. Again, #'s 1-40 are user presets, so you have 40 sound patches to work with. Patches 41-80 are the factory presets that you can't change.
I've run a Carvin DC135 thru it (I have DiMarzis - YJM neck, Cruiser middle and Super 2s in the bridge (it's a killer hotrodded guitar) and a Paul Reed Smith McCarty hollowbody thru it. Both sounded decent. What you'll notice with these types of cheaper stompboxes is that you can run a $300 guitar or $3,000 guitar thru it, and you won't get that much of a different sound. Which is good if you're on a budget. I've noticed that you'll see some variance of sound, but not much, compared with playing thru a real amp that is.
One thing that is tricky is getting the sound right. I"ve found for the Bose I need to crank the unit up - volume at 99. But, when I play thru the tube amp, everything gets cranked down, to like 50 or so. Nature of the beast, not a big deal, just adjust the main volume.
Again, effects are hit or miss, depending on what you like. There's enough in there tho to keep you occupied. But, based on what sound you are looking for, best to find it on the net and tweak yourself. In about 3 hours or so, you can build up 10 patches or so that will be all you need for most styles.

Stylistically, I'm all over the place which is the benefit of buying a pedal like this. Depending on mood, I could be playing hard rock, 60s rock, country, reggae....just about anything. Just choose the patch you want and off you go.
I've owned tons of gear and was looking to simplify and have a small box that I didn't have to break my back doing occassional gigs. I must admit, the RP80 into the Bose is a sweet combo - is it a tube amp? NO. But can you get decent tone - affirmative. Absolutely, just tweak a bit (again, I got a killer Marshall sound that blew away my band mates).
For $80, it's very tough to beat folks.

i play heavy metal, its a great match with my ibanez not so good with my tanglewood but it gives the tanglewood a good blues sound for when i have some fun with the scales.
i've been playing around 5 years now i got 3 guitars am happy with them all 2 digitech pedals one for really heavy and one just for heavy,
if it got stolen or lost i would look at upgrades from the rp80 and test them out i would have to stick with digitech.
