2 knobs. Say no more...

Sound Quality : 3
All I can say about the sound is that it sounds great.....when it tracks. I tried the unit between the bass and the amp, before and after a compressor, in the effect loop, well....everywhere. And I also kept in mind that all octave unit track the most from the A string and up. And this one is really a shame. I couldn't get more than 1 second of tracking while playing an E on the second string (Duh?!). Also, I tried my 4 strings piccolo bass thinking that the unit would track better with higher notes and it does the very same. Very disapointing.

I have 5 differents basses and the only one that would probably "work" with it is my fretless with passive electronics, and still couldn't reach the full potential of the effect. Because in that case, all you want, is a unit that'll play 1 octave below the note you're playing. And also note that you can't play more than 1 note at a time. I exchanged it for a BOSS Super Shifter. And even if I get that very synthetic sound with it, it outperformed the MXR Bass Octave by far.

2 knobs, mix in the octave and mix in the clean

Sound Quality : 9
It still doesn't track perfectly but does a better job than the boss or dod pedals in my opinion. it has a little bit of a synth sort of sound to it which makes it have a better musical quality. it doesn't quite sound as much like the actual lower octave as a midiverb but the midiverb has a strange synthetic feel to it as this sounds more analog. it goes one octave below the note you are hitting. it doesn't track more than one note accurately but it does a really good job of tracking .
