Dunlop JH-1 Jimi Hendrix Wah Wah

There are no knobs or anything to adjust, so in that sense, it's easy to use. However, using a wah pedal takes some practice to get certain effects. The battery cmpartment is easier than the old one where you had to unscrew the bottom plate, however, it's made of crappy plastic that broke! They should have kept it the way it was!

The frequency of the sweep is pretty low as advertised, however its not drastically different from my old one that I had a long time ago(original Cry Baby, probably from the '80's). Jerry Cantrell supposedly uses this pedal, but I suspect his is modified. I saw the new AIC lineup not that long ago,and his sound was pretty good. Anyway, I was trying to get a Stooges/ Saint Vitus kind of wah sound with distortion, and with a Marshall Guvnor and some amp distortion, I got that sound. I mostly play punk rock and hardcore punk-influenced stuff, so I rarely use this pedal, but it's a nice effect to have in your arsenal. I pug the guitar (SG) into the distortion then the wah. As far as affecting the sound when it's off (wah pedals are notorious for this) it does a little bit, but not as bad as my old one did (the main reason I got rid of it).

This is where I was very disappointed. The little plastic battery compartment thing broke not that long ago, and I barely have even used this pedal. I's better to use a power source anyway, but this is still extremely dissapointing! I got the pedal several months ago, and either lost or accidentally threw out the reciept (I'll admit this was stupid on my part), so I cant return it. If they kept the design the way it was originally, I wouldnt have this problem. As far as gigging with it goes, I sasy the fewer effects the better when it comes to live playing, so I wouldnt even bother (wah is not an effect that is usually required in the music that I play).

I've been playing close to 10 years. I dont usually use wah but its a good effect to have around, after I started getting into Saint Vitus I knew I wanted to get a wah pedal again. If this pedal was stolen, I'd be pissed off but I wouldnt go and rush out and buy another one. If I ever did get another wah pedal, I'd be loooking at different makes and models, that's for sure. I shouldn't have to worry about some crappy palstic part breaking just from barely touching it. This is supposed to be a proffesional quality product, goddamnit! "Dunlop: live to play live." whatever.

Its a WAH-WAH! Read the whole review. However, I left a shorter version of this at the Musicians Friend web site under the ratings system for the product in question. I seriously doubt after it is reviewed by the genious web master at Musicians Friend it will be posted.

It's with unreserved indignation that I review this product. The depth to which I am appalled by this leaves me grasping for as much outrage as I can muster in the sadness I feel for the Hendrix Estate, not because they are being exploited but because they have so little self-respect that they have exploited their own flesh and blood! I can barely articulate my disappointment as 1. The Hendrix estate has again not only allowed this to happen but probably ccame up with the idea and it further cheapens the legacy of an Iconic guitar player; 2. Dunlop has the impudence to call this a signature wah. Dunlop Corp. basically took a GCB-95 standard wah board changed 2 capacitors and re-packaged it with some fancy graphics/cosmetics. This wah-wah does not sound any different than any other Dunlop Wah-Wah except that the high end is cut due to the capacitor change. The associated packaging and literature, the chrome top, black crinkle paint and the gasketed bottom plate are the only difference in this wah. They didn???t even use a ???Fasel??? inductor. I did not get nearly what I expected. I could change the two capacitors myself, and the rest is fluff. Save your money and buy the fasel inductor version, they are $30 cheaper and yes cheap is the correct word or better yet buy a Teese or a Fulltone Wah. Dunlop even used the old 2003 marked GCB-95 boards for this wah. They claim they copied it after a special fact finding trip to the Hendrix museum in Seattle, of course this was a special request accepted by and hosted by the beloved Hendrix Estate. I say this is total BS. They changed two caps and the cosmetics nothing more. Oh yea Dunlop increased the price for all their hard work go figure; unbelievable! What an outrage, Hendrix family you need to live up to name of the man who's legacy you live off of.

Dunlop Corp. this is yet another shameful marketing ploy which once again exemplifies the Hendrix Estates GREED along with Dunlop???s willingness to denigrate the significance of a legendary artist. The lows both have degenerated too; these egregious acts of greed are the only things new here! This is truly disgusting!

It is a shame that the Dunlop Corp. would go to this length to make a buck. Jimi Hendrix is a hero to many guitar players and a legend in the guitar world. I cannot believe the Hendrix Estate would do this. If they need money maybe they should charge more for entrance at the museum in Seattle. Egregiously disgraceful and shamelessly disrespectful! I own numerous wah's. I build custom tube amps and pedals including wah-wahs. The best way to get a wah that sounds great and above the rest, build it from scratch, have lots of spare like parts to change out till you find the magic combination???.

Okay... the tone is great, but it may not be what you're looking for. It doesn't have a high, cutting top end - that's probably a good thing, but it also means that your sound won't cut through the mix as much. The wah sounds good everywhere except maybe heel down (too much low end). I think I may have this modded to raise the range just a bit.

Dunlop makes good stuff. I've had an old 535 Crybaby for about 10 years (before the 535Q came out), and it's still solid. This pedal seems to be built just as tough or tougher.

I've emailed and called Dunlop a few times. They respond quickly, they're knowledgeable, and they're friendly. Great customer service!

I'd like to mention that mine is a limited edition model - it has a purple paint job. I don't think that makes any difference as far as sound is concerned, though. It is a good-sounding wah, but I doubt that it has enough variety or the right range for most playing styles. The good thing about this wah, though, is that almost every position is a sweet spot. I got mine for free (long story) so I can't complain, but this probably won't replace my old 535, no matter how much tone the 535 sucks while in bypass.

stock its easy enough, but the switch is harder to engage compared to other wahs.

so stock i give it 8 for operation- after taking the rubber bushings out and cutting them in half (so they are only 1/2 as tall) i give it a 10 for operation cause it switches much easier

really nails that hendrix wah thang

its not quite as vocal as the clyde, but very close. it is not super versatile - meaning the sweep does not go as low and high (bass and treble) as other wahs (crybaby, etc.), but it is a very midrange oriented wah with no top harshness

thats why it nails the hendrix sound.

i read @ musicians friend where someone said it does not get enough high-end treble.....duh! thats the point! thats what hendrix's wahs sounded like. no shrill treble. they should have gotten a crybaby if they wanted top end


i guess what im saying is its very musical and the mid-heavy wah is centered around a very musical frequency. easy to nail that classic middy wah.

other than changing the pot every few years its built like a tank

it works very well and is great for the hendrix wah thang

very easy enough said but as far being upgraded i have done my own slight modifications of the pedal i cut the rupper tips off for1).more sweep/foot travel.2).makes it easier to click the effect on/off.

it's a nice thick sounding wah with alot of vocal mid range anf fat lows and the highs are pretty clean w/out sounding too harsh.it does add quite a bit of noise to the amp when using alot of distortion which is normal but you can always work around it either a noise gate or turn off your distortion footswitch/pedals off during pauses that what i do with my BB-2 od/booster box for that over the top metal type of gain/chunk/solos etc..... or hit the clean channel as well.

i've used it couple of times in a studio and a few open mike nights w/ no problems.I guess if my dime crybaby from hell broke down i would use this wah to get me through the night or saved the day etc....

I play mostly rock and metal works great through my marshall valvestate amps which has a nice metal edge to them with my Black les paul standard w/ZW style of EMG pickups.If it did get stolen i could always use my other 3 wahs the dime crybaby,GCB-95 crybaby and the bad horsie wah but out the 4 i would rather hold on to the jimi hendrix and dime models because they either got alot of tone or the right nature of tone that makes the wah sound so effective.

Very easy to use, it??s a wah-wah pedal , just step on it. The on/off switch is a little bit hard to push, nothing more.

Very hendrixian style , this pedal has a wider range than the others, I mean, more bass and more treble. Perfect fis to my needs, I play some old rock n'roll like Jimi Hendrix (God himself), Grand Funk Railroad, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc.
One of my sets: Epiphone SG (with my custom modifications Gibson hardware and pickups) , DeArmond 1600 Volume Pedal, Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Wah-wah, Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi I (Original), Ibanez TS-9, Boss Ds-1, Fender PT-100 , Boss CE-5 , MXR Phase 90, Boss DD-3, on a Duovox 100G Head (brazilian valve amp, perfect copy of teh original Fender Twin Reverb, even better than the new ones) on a 4x12' with originals Novik WXNSS speakers (based on Celestion Vintage 30, but sounds better in my opinion).

The JH-1 sounds great, of course my set up helps, but I tested it on different amps and it also sound great. DEserves a 10

Dunlop Cry Baby style , solid as a rock, no need to backups.

I live in Brazil, the support is given by the store that sells, no problem with this. I have never called Dunlop customer support.
I can fix, modify, improve, all my equipment I don't need customer support.

Well this is where the pedal lets its self down. The on/off switch is really hard to push down so it is hard to turn it on/off (not good 4 on stage). However once it is on it is fine and simple to use.

I like it. I have both VOX V847 and JD JH-1, and in my opinion the JH is better. The JH gives a bigger sweep for a more effective Wah (which is good). I find the JH has a great sound and it also works well with OD or Dist.

I guess it is reliable, however the switch is a pain when playing. I think it would be ok gig with (I have).

This is a great Wah-Wah pedal and gives a strong effective Wah. Again I have The V847 and that is also very good, so give either of them a good try. It is a shame about the switch in the JH-1.

It's a Wah pedal step on it (reeeallly step on it sometimes - as the 'on/off' switch in mine was not the best) and away you go. Taking the entire bottom off to access the battery bugged me a little, but to be fair it probably annoyed me more because I didn't enjoy this pedal at all.

Well a lot of people seem to like this pedal here, but after having owned one, I can't say I'm one of them.

I used this with a Marshall Valvestate 808/Honer L'59 (nice LP copy) set-up and was NOT impressed. The tonal sweep was too extreme for my tastes (though funnily enough, at the guitar store I talked myself into thinking it was cool :( ), and it was all just too brittle. For those reading this, don't confuse 'extreme' with 'good' because it simply isn't the case.

The pot in mine started getting all scratchy after a couple of weeks, and was annoying as hell. While trying to play clean and funky rythyms the noise from the pot was plain irritating. I tried getting in there and cleaning it up, but to no avail. Just crappy.

I bought this new about 10 years ago, and sold it again within a couple of months, mainly because (problems aside) I didn't like the overly trebly sound. I've played other wah's that heve a much smoother sound, but if you want your signal to turn into something that resembles a 30 year-old AM radio with a single speaker, have fun with this pedal. But for me, it just doesn't pass muster...

Just step on the button and unleash the fury. Never got a manual as I found it used. But any fool can use a wah wah.

I used this effect with a Us strat and a Line 6 spyder II 30 watt amp. I found that although this pedal sounded great clean, and even better with a marshall crunch, it's optimal distorsion type was an extreme shred metal tone. It also works as a sustainer, and if you play a harmonic and sweep to the front, it will sustain forever. Some songs in particular that the tone works were, "Summer Song" by Joe Satriani and "The Audience Is Listening" by "Little Stevie Vai" Althoug i love this pedal to death, i miss having the Q control button to change the depth or the sweep. But I would not recommend that unless you have been using a wah wah pedal for a long time, and actually think you're good enough. But for a first wah pedal , or even a good player (Joe Satriani uses this along with his 535Q)this does great.

To conclude, this is an incredibly great pedal for literally every style of music. Strangely, it even sounds great for techno. As in "Discotheque" by U2. I compared it with the original Cry Baby, and it destroyed it royaly. (Not really, the original is good too.) The only thing i wish it had was the Q control. Oh well For the price, it was a good buy. Even at the full $135 Canadian would be a good buy!!

Its a wah pedal.... not really too hard to use, one button under the expression pedal. Its not complicated to use at all. You only have one sound, so its not at all hard to work with. I got it used so i don't have the manual, but I've never had any trouble anyway.

I Have a Line 6 Spyder II with a highway 1 stratocaster (made in US)and I can achieve jazz cleans, and crazy Steve Vai Wah souds, (like in "The Audience Is Listening") It also sounds great playing some Satriani stuff. Its optimal area is from frets 5 - 14 and higher that its starts to sound less and less, stilll i love the sound and it is still playable at the high frets, and i still think it sounds good.

Solid as a rock. 'nuff said. Just don;t get and or dust in the pots.

I love it. i compared it to the original crybaby and a moreley wah, and i liked it better. The original crybaby seemed better at first, but after i tried both of them I liked the hendrix more. The big down side though, is that you're paying for the name on the box, but the list price was only $30 more (Canadian. If it were stolen or lost i would most likely buy it again, ore look at the Joe Satriani Wah (Crybaby 535Q) The main downside though, is that you can't ajust the depth or the sweep, but i still love it and must give it an overall 9.

I use this Wha whit diferent Guitar and amp. Marshall Bluesbreaker, JCM 800, JCM 900 Fender Deluxe, Twin, Junior peavey Classic 50, Guitar Fender Strat. Tele, Gibson les paul standard, SG and it sound very good whit all mixed.

if you want a warm sound just put the trebble on low and the Middle some lower and the bass high!.
if you want a realy screaming noise just do the trebble and the middle higher and the bass some lower thats it! and it works perfectly to me!.

I think the Dunlop JH-1 is not realy noisy, sometimes when i play loud
on gigs or when i put the bass on high it a little bit noisy but thats allright.

i think it sounds great! with every thing you want to play on it.

i play like Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards (The Stones) and when i play some songs like Voodoo chile it ounds amazing!, just tune your amp a little bit.

Everytime i used the Dunlop with a gig it sounds great!..

i play now for like over 12 years.
just try it out sometime and you will enjoy playing guitar much more.

The fact there is no on-off led IS an issue; real-life gigs on festival-size stages can be poorly monitored.

I use Strats thru fender 75's and a Hiwatt bottom, with a tube screamer. The JH-1 does the job, but it isn't worth the extra money from a regular Crybaby, which I've had for years before it got static. Anyway, the wah effect is by definition a very low-fi thing, so I don't really care how it sounds. Quite sensual clean, and works great for Michael Schenker type filtering. You can also just click it on full treble at the end of a high fret bend, and it's natural increased gain will give you sustain for days. But all whas do that.

I play lounge type electro with DJ's, and also some Pink Floyd tribute. If it were stolen I woudn't replace it, I'd try something else. It's pro touring and studio tool, but it's no instant classic. I'm a true Hendrix fan, but I bought it because it was the last one on the rack. If anyone thinks they're going to sound like Hendrix because of a sticker on a box, they deserve to keep on playing in their basements.

pretty good this was only my second wah pedal

i have a an ibanez going through a 2x12 crate and i really liked the rich tones from this pedal but i found that when playing high notes the wah didnt seem to register but the mids sounded rich and full so did the lows

this is the reason i am writing this review because i have only owned this pedal for about 8 months and i dropped it from about three feet in the air next time i tried to use it, it didn't work right i mean i know you arnt supposed to drop these things but as heavy as it is and as much metal that its made with i mean comon it should be able to take a little abuse

becuse it broke on me so fast i am going to have to give this a very low rating, buyers beware this thing is as fragile as a egg (sounds good though)

First of all - I'm a keyboard player and I use JH-1 with my synth (Roland XV-5050 with SRX-07 Ultimate Keys expansion), so this is a keyboardist's point of view (sorry to all guitar freaks here :).

JH-1 is very easy to use, just like an usual expression pedal. However, you have to get used to it - you should practise it to get that cool sound. And it don't slip on the floor - manufacturers of keyboard pedals, follow Dunlop's example!

Good. Of course, it is not primarily designed to use with synths, but from all those wah-wah's I tried (Crybaby classic, VOX's and some other) this one suits my ears (and synths) best.
It has a wide range (wwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaah instead of waaaah) and all sounds I run through it (fender rhodes, clavi's, synth leads etc.; naturally some work better than the others) are very, very funky. On the other hand, sometimes there is a small distortion and hiss (but maybe this is ok for guitars, I don't know) and the resulting sound needs to be equalized.

Looks rock solid, our guitarist have been using Crybaby Classic for 9 years now without a break.

Well, this thing is a very good choice for a keyboard player. You have to forget about stereo but it makes you sound so funky that nothing else can do (forget those poor auto-wah f/x's in your synth) and it is very funny to play it. It adds more expressivity to your playing which I think is very important for keyboard players. If you are into funky or fusion, give it a try. I would definitely buy it again.

Very easy to use. The i can't even remember reading the manual as its pretty self explanitory. YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO PLAY WAH TO MAKE WAH SOUND GOOD. Rocking back and forth isnt wah. You need trills and variations in the rocking, this makes the freq range a little hard to get accustomed to, small movements sound the best.

I am using a Epi LP standard, with seymour duncan pearly gates pickups for that Texas blues sound, with a Marshall AVT100. The AVT's distortion isn't that great anyway, a bit too sharp coz the valve emulation lacks the warmth of the vaccum tubes in the actual master section. The pedal isn't noisy at all in clean but you can make wooshing wind sounds rocing the pedal even if your vol. on your guitar is turned down (overdriven). THE PEDAL IS A MAJOR TONE LEACH!!! I bought seymour duncans to boost my treble and mid response, making artificial harmonics sound like Gibbons himself. I was heartbroken arfter i hooked up my wah that the sound turned to mud. Its a good tone if thats what ur after but a pedal that alters tone is a definate shit off.

I am going to replace the entire circuit board with the Roger Mayer Red Lion upgrade. Hopefully this will keep my tone and not destroy it.

I use it with an american strat and a fender hot rod deluxe. It's not noisy at all. It does exactly what it says it does...try it before you buy it...I wasn't able to try it (here, in Eastern Europe it's very hard to get your hands on good equipment: there're no music stores in Romania), so I decided to check out the reviews here on www.harmony-central.com. What can I say...well, guys, maybe some of you are kinda rich or you're able to buy every piece of equipment you want, or maybe you're able to sell or trade it anytime...what can I say...BUT MAKE UP YOUR MIND: the fact that the thing doesn't do what you want then it doesn't mean that it is a piece of junk. Some of us are not able to get equipment that easy...OK?
It's quite dificult to get used to the JH-1 at the beginning, cause it's not an average wah. The sweep range is different (very waaaaaah, not just waaah, very human-like, or musical), the sound is "muffled" when the sweep range is down - some say - but I think it's just the added bass (i.e. the modified frequency of the circuit) which helps you define your wah-wah licks better. Take into consideration that there's a drop in the volume when the sweep range is down. IMHO this is one of the greatest thing about this wah (the added bass and the very little yet sleek volume drop add to musicality) However, this drop in volume is noticeable when using clean or smooth crunch. I can easily get the sound of Hendrix or Vaughan through the thing. Hell, when using it correctly (look under!), I can get Satriani or Zakk Wylde with it.
But PAY ATTENTION!!!
Use it after the overdrive or distortion units in your chain. It's the way Hendrix used it. You will notice that the thing was created for this position! You can try several positions (some people say you have to use it before all the units, but Dunlop advertises the contrary), but you'll draw the same conclusion I did.

Very reliable. Hard as a rock. No backup needed. Maybe just a battery per year would be nice :)

Never dealt with Dunlop...my unit was bought in the USA...if broken, I couldn't do anything with the warranty or anything.

Perfect match for my style (blues-rock / funk / hard rock). I've been playing for 6 years now, 2 profesionally. I've been dreaming about a nice Dunlop since I set my hands on my first guitar. I also own Boss DD-2 Delay, Boss SD-2 Dual Overdrive, Boss DS-1 Distortion, Ibanez TS-9 DX. If stolen, I'ld definitely kill the guy :) I would buy the same model!!! Comparing it to the Dunlop GCB-95, the GCB sounded weak and very trebly to me. The JH-1 sounds very nice, very nice, indeed. It helps you a lot to build your personal wah-wah phrases, licks, etc. Very, very musical.

I'd say that if you need to know how to use it, you should'nt be using it!

I use a variety of Strats set up for everything from metal to Texas blues. I play through a Peavey XXX and a Vintage 30 4x12. I have always used an original crybabay, and I loved it. I would love to say that " I'm a blues player ", but I have a metal heart. I'm not into the Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani stuff. I'm more into the Zakk, Dime, Roahds game. I was a little taken back by the depth of the sweep, but soon got used to it and can make it do everything the crybaby can do and more. I always knew Zakk used one, but after playing it I can now hear who else uses it, or sounds like they do anyway," Holy Godsmack Batman"!!! I will say it sound a little lame through a practice amp, I use a Peavey Trans Tube 1x12 Bandit, but throug the XXX its super sonic.

Built like a tank, my crybaby is as old as dirt and never had a problem, so I expect the same with the Hendrix.

I play classic rock and Texas style SRV/early ZZ Top blues to Hard and Heavy, like Ozzy, Pantera, Godsmack. This nails it all, especially with a tube head.

Very simple to use...A button clicks to activate/deactivate the effect. The farther forward you rock the pedal the more treble appears, rock it backwards, less treble and more bass...Extremely easy to use, lots of possibilites.

My setup is a 2001 Fender Std. Strat (customized with various aftermarket parts and 2 Seymour Ducan Lil '59 pickups), Boss DS-1 Distortion, Real Tube Overdrive, into a Fender Hot Rod Deville 410. Noise isn't really factor, except for when Overdrive of Distortion is used, as you rock the pedal back and forth...a static like sound is produced; but this is very typical in all wah pedals...its the nature of the beast so to speak.

Its modeled after Jimi Hendrix and his trademark wah sound...Dunlop made this model with a lower "sweep" in the wah making it different than other wahs...I feel that it replicates Jimi's tone quite well but its more of how he utilized and manipulated his wah to achieve his tone...one of those trademark things that every guitar player sounds different, even if they are all using the exact same equipment.

Its very dependable....I'm 21 and recieved it as a 16th birthday present...I regularly use it in my own freetime playing, and also on an extremely regular basis playing in a band on weekends for the last 2 1/2 years...without a backup I might add...The construction is wonderful, built like a tank...I would trust this thing to play my own rendition of "Voodoo Child" when I'm in the Shady Acres Old Folks home in 60 more years.

I've never needed to contact Dunlop, or send it in for repairs...The only thing I would recommend is to make sure there is always grease on the gear under the pedal; otherwise it could end up squeaking when its used...also something extremely typical of wah pedals. Even though I have not needed to ask for assitance, I'll still rate this category at a 10 because not needing contact them for assistance shows the quality in their product.

I play mostly Classic Rock and Blues, which matches with this pedal greatly...I cover about 3 Hendrix tunes, and yes, Voodoo Child is one of them! I have been playing for almost 9 years. If it were stolen or lost, I wouldn't buy anything else other than another Jimi Hendrix wah....but I would still greatly miss my original, because of its history with me and its hands-down my favorite pedal. I absolutely love everything about it, I wouldn't change a thing on it....Its the greatest effect in the whole world to shape a way to make your guitar sound.

Well, I just got it today and when I took it out of the box the damn thing was pretty stiff at first. It took a while to break it in and loosen up the axles and stuff. Even when I mannaged to break it in it was a little tricky to work. Based on what the other people say in these reviews, "it takes a little while to get the hang of" -and- "It's either all the way trebly or all the way bassy." Both of these comments are very true. The middle line between bass and treble is very thin and trying to find that "in between" point is a little bothersome and as far as rocking the pedal goes, you have to know this pedal well.

FIRST OFF, GET THIS. THE CIRCUITRY FOR THE JH-1 IS THE CIRCUITRY FOR THE DUNLOP GCB-95 ORIGIONAL CRYBABY (DUNLOP'S CHEAP WAH MODEL). WHICH EXPLAINS WHY IT THE WAH SOUNDS SO "ARTIFICIAL." DUNLOP ALSO WIRED IN A TRUE-BYPASS CIRCUIT INTO THE PCB-BOARD TO MAKE PEOPLE THINK THEIR GETTING SOMETHING GOOD. THE ONLY THING THAT IS "JIMI HENDRIX" ABOUT IT IS THAT IT HAS THE "mod" WHICH IS A POTENTIOMETOR THAT JIMI WOULD HAVE INSTALLED IN HIS WAHS. WHICH BY THE WAY IS A
100k hot-potz C taper potentiometer, incase any of you want to know. SO FOR ALL OF YOU JIMI FANS LIKE ME MAY GET A LITTLE DISSAPOINTED IF YOU ARE EXPECTING SOUNDS LIKE "VOODOO CHILE(slight return)".

NOTE: my advice for anyone who wants Jimi is to go out and get a
cheap empty VOX wah chassy (without any electronics), and
install a 100k hot-potz C taper potentiometer then send the
wah to someone over the internet to install a handmade
v848 circuit, then use ZINC cell batteries to enhance the tone.

Another NOTE: There has been much debate over which wah pedal that
Jimi used and everyone seems to think that Jimi used a
VOX v847 wah and this could very well be true, but it
is known for a fact that Jimi used a VOX v846 in the
beginning which he later switched to a v848 Clyde. Of
course, on all of his wahs he had the pots switched out.

The tone of the wah really isn't bad at all once you start to get used to it. It takes time. And I do in fact very well here some
Jimi esque sound. But it does not sound like Jimi that much to me when I turn on the Jimi Hendrix records. And I use a Fender Strat, a Fuzz Face, and a Marshall 100w Plexi head with 6650's (like Jimi's), and Marshall 1960 cabs with 75w Celestons (Jimi switched to these during the Electric Ladyland days.

When you keep the wah in one position, it sounds wah to artificial (crybaby) and sounds good if you rock the pedal ounce you are skilled at using the wah in conjuction with your guitar playing. One of the great things about this wah is that when you turn the wah off, the true-bypass is activated.

It looks like the metal chassy is pretty sturdy. However the plastic gear on the potentiometer as well as the plastic piece that rotates it when you rock the pedal seems like it is apt to break within a few years of use. That bottom metal plate is pretty thin too.

Never dealt with dunlop. But I'm thinking of raising hell with them.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk when it comes to this wah. I guess I was just expecting just a little bit more out of it. After all, it IS a Crybaby. Dunlop has false advertisement about the design of this pedal. Dunlop clearly states "60's design" which is not true at all. It's not a VOX design, neither is it a "60's design" crybaby. It is the same ole classic crybaby with a true-bypass and a different potentiometer. The PC board clearly states that it is a GCB-95 wah circuit, NOT a VOX circuit like Jimi's.

In case you find it a little okward that I put down some fairly decent ratings for this pedal, and then bitched about it in all of my comments... I think that this is great wah, but it shouldn't be sold as a Jimi Hendrix wah. That's the part that pisses me off.

All of my ratings are out of pure honesty. I'm not the type to bitch about things but when it comes to Jimi Hendrix, then things start to get a little serious. And when something says Jimi on it and doesn't sound like Jimi, then it gets personal.

In the words of a very pissed off Jimi Hendrix fan yet serious musician, this is my overall rating of this product. I tried to view this wah pedal in every aspect, detail, and use. I rated this pedal disregarding Jimi Hendrix and looking at the pedal as another typical wah, which it is.

Pretty easy to use. Takes a little while to get the rhythm going on your foot to keep time with the playing. Budget about two weeks here. One week if you're a soccer player. :-)

Sounds fine. I use it with a vintage tube amplifier.

One very useful effect is to use it prior to your overdrive pedal, like this: Guitar=>Cry=>Overdrive=>Amplifier

Run the crybaby at about 3/4 throttle and the overdrive on high setting. This will give you what I call the "guttural" or throaty sound. This doesn't seem to work with the VOX I tried as it doesn't stay put in that position (although it does have a wider range).

The POT has gone scratchy afer ten years of use in a dusty environment. I suspect some cleaning and pot lube would help here. :-) I do know that this is a common failure of the unit but spares are available from Dunlop.

I'll let you know when I finally break it. But the fact they make parts available scores points with me.

If your repertoire includes 1960's and 1970's pop music, you will need this pedal otherwise you simply aren't a player. :-)

as everyone else on this review has said... click it.. its on. though, theres no light to indicate when its activated (like on the rotovibe, and most morley pedals). obviously there is an tonal difference, but there are times where you dont put enough pressure on it and it doesnt turn off/on right when u want it to... in my opinion thats one of the last things i want to think about live. i dont want to stand over it and fuck up parts trying to hear the diffference in the middle of a gig. i have this problem with all wahs built this way, so i give it a seven cause although its strait forward... it is not as natural as my morley (bad horsey). also, theres not as much pysical play as a morley so ur ankle has to be alot more delicate to really shape the wah around ur tone.

its intresting. its the complete oposite of my bad horsey which is exactly what i wanted (nothing against the morely, i just like experimenting with the diffferent tones). The increased sweep is so wide, that i use it more as a tone shaper (e.g. give more whip to bends in solos, overly bassy, midy, trebbley tones for NIN stuff) . i mean, strait out, with some overdrive its a great hendrix sound, and for some rock/metal leads its cool, but its also fun for other tonal arrangement (this combined with the bad horey makes for nasty feedback) but save the morely for ur solos if ur going for a crisp wah tone when ur playing metal

but if ur going to use it for a strait wah, you'll find that all the way back, its really muffled so most of what ur expecting is in the top 2/3's of the pedal.

i myself (playing for ~5 yrs) play all types of rock, jazz, blues, metal... just not emo.....anything...but....emo. my band plays metal (and yes we solo) its a great pedal for specific sounds. if u want an all around wah... look somewhere else. its very intense and it can make or break what ur goen for.. like that guy who posted about the Halen stuff... thats expected cause its too intense and fast and certain sections are seriously muffled. for that use a morley. but for what i use if for.. its great

Pretty good, if your looking for a hendrix sound, though still not quite as good in tonal range as the ones he used (Though the only alternatives are getting a vintage wah from that era or moding the
JH-1. I found it to be able to do voodoo child quite nicely.

Looks pretty sturdy. Though the day after I got it the switch perminantly locked in the on position (you'd push down and it wouldn't click). Instead of fixing it myself and possibly voiding the warrenty I took it down to Long and Mcquade Lakeshore Music where it was bought and they let me trade it in for another. Haven't had a problem with that one since (had it for 4 months so far). But after the switch problem I might be inclined to have a backup at a serious gig.

I mostly play blues rock, hard rock, some metal, and occasionaly the odd punk or grunge. If you wanna wah that sounds like Jimi's and don't mind slight lack of tone variation, this is the pedal for you.

Though I find it funny how dunlop boasts in the manual that this is Jimi Hendrix' prefered variation and that he played crybaby's, when I get a live dvd of him and it shows a close-up on his VOX wah-wah.

You click it, its not hard the felt needs replacing after a while though.

I dont know why so many people complain about the sound, aside from when its all the way up it sounds great. But when its all teh way up its so trebly. i use it with a laney tf320 into a DOD fx64 - big muff - sd1 - hendrix wah - telecaster. It sounds really good aside from the treble and volume drop of the initial turn on. And, i can get the wicka wicka sound witch is strange seeing as no one else can. Very strange. IM giving it an 8 because of the volume drop.

Its VERY reliable, its hard as a rock. the only thing that will need replacing is hte felt. witch really sucks after its worn, makes it really hard to use. I got it for free, it wasnt really a matter to me weather it was reliable or not.

I play stuff like rush and experimental stuff and it works great for that ive been playing 3 years, if it was stolen id definetly replace it. but i really wish it was true bypass.

it sucked a good amount of tone, i went from Van Halen to...muffled Halen. but its ok. still a very good wah. i love its range. rather Ladyland sounding. check out still rainin...still dreamin. youll hear what i mean.

dude said "use ZINC instead of Alkaline!" because it sounds "better"...what crap is that?. BATTERIES ARE BATTERIES GUY!!!! hendrix never modified any of his pedals. although he did indeed use a crybaby. the only thing that was modified from a stock instrument was his amp's tubes.he had them changed. thats it. yes, he did have pedals that were hand made for him, but no wah was modified. simply built, then given. you also have to consider that most or all wahs had the fasel in it. adding a completely different tone than what all have now. and they were bypassed alot better. this wah is good, i admit, as i was able to get that Ladyland sound which is pretty much all around sought after. great wah. but it does not infact nail his wah sound. he liked crybaby because it had better range, and swept alot easier. this pedal does not have enough range. listen to voodoo child, and tell me if that sounds dead on like this wah. not enough high end in this wah. but still a very good wah.

Basic wah operation here.

I'm using this with a Les Paul Std. and a Marshall AVT150 combo with the extension cab. I'm not sure what to make of all the bad reviews on the sound quality of this pedal. Admittedly it's sweep and tone is different from a Crybaby, but then if you want that sound then save yourself $20 bucks and buy one of those instead. I really dig the range of this pedal, and unlike others I dig even the lower bassy ranges of this thing. I'm running a Boss CS3 compressor in front of the wah, which definitely helps to boost some of the low-volume muddiness of the lower ranges, but other than that I don't have any issues with the sound of the pedal: it has a unique sound which may or may not work for you, so try it out. I for one dig the way I can go from a shrieking banshee to a feel-it-in-your-stomach growl with this.

It's solid.

I've been playing for fifteen years or so, and recently turned to guitar seriously again and started playing out. I've played Crybabys and Voxen before and wanted something different. Again, try before you buy and make sure the sound works for you.

its easy to use as far as pushing the pedal up and down. but unlike some of the er...... other poser's .......er ....... i mean poster's, there is more to using a wah properly than just pushin on it like its a gas pedal. listen to hendrix the guy was a GOD and no one used one of these things like he could.it takes time to blend the wah action with your playing and string bending etc. dont listen to these bozo's that tell ya that anyone can do it, they probably suck big big time.i gave it a seven because of these facts.

this wah sounds better than my VOX reissue that cost twice as much as this oine. the vox looks better cause its chrome. but the hendrix pedal has way more usable sweep. goes alot deeper,and is more adjustable. you can get a real growl outta the low end on this thing.hendrix had his wah's modified to achive this, thats what this pedal is based on.make sure you use batterys, NOT the adapter, if you want real sound from this pedal, and use zinc batterys NOT alkaline, believe me theres a difference in TONE. i give it a nine .cause nothings perfect, unless of course hendrix or page is playing.

never had a problem. in fact my vox died on me(started gettin really scratchy) and the replacemet pot was stupid amount of dollars.thats why i bought this one used,for $80 Canadian.thats cheap folks. it was a real bargain.its bullet proof.

i play all styles in a top forty and tribute bands for over 15 years.this is probably my 5th or 6th wah pedal.i use rack gear so i can cover all different players sounds.my gear: marshall JMP-1 preamp, ADA mp1 preamp ,Marshall el 84 power amp , alesis Quadreverb plus.rocktron intellifex, marshall 4x12 with green backs in it.fc 50 midi controller. les pauls and strats. its pretty 80's set up, but it works great and sounds killer. i hate the way new amps have gone LINE-6 blows big dog warts ,they suck big time!!! any way....this pedal is great . it does need true by pass feature however, but i could do that myself if i wasnt a lazy prick! see ya all later..keep rockin!!!!ps: learn how to play guitar solos! todays bands all suck huge .... most of them cant play guitar at all....

The JH-1 is easy to use, but having bought it used without a manual, I had no idea that there was a on/off toggle by stepping hard on it until reading these reviews. This is my first pedal and it was easier to use than I had first expected.

Basic set up, with Yamaha guitar, wah, and Yahama multi-effects amp. It took a fair amount of experimentation to get the desired sound (as in Hendrix' Voodoo Chile Slight Return). How you set the guitar pickup switch and effects settings has a major impact on the sound of the wah. This wah sounds good with high-treble from the neck of the guitar, combined with high-bass low/med-treble out of the amp. Also, it seems you don't want to always use 100% of the pedal -- lot better sounds can be had using thirds or halves of the pedal, depending on the sound you're looking for. Another major factor is the speed you press the pedal... some cool sounds come from a slow, half-pedal press and return. As for the wacka-wacka, it's easily had with a harmonic barre, and a quick snap of the pedal. Play with it!

The past reviews are right on one score, fully pressed and left there, you'll get a muted, bassed sound, and it'll seem like high E sounds like mid E instead (I still wonder if it doesn't actually shift the octaves a bit). Left in the middle (half-pressed), you get some pretty unusual octave distortion and long sustain in the mid-range. So I can see how some players would find that this pedal wouldn't fit their playing range.

On the other hand, this pedal gives a huge amount of range to play with... you just have to experiment. It's great for creating your own sound, which is what I'm after (even being a serious listener of Hendrix, Satriani, Santana, among others).

The exterior is built like a tank for sure, but the internals? I've got an old, used one that looks like it has lasted years and still going strong. There's no buzz, no radio interference (as mentioned in some other reviews), and no other problems.

I live in Malaysia... let's hope I don't have to deal with Dunlop anytime soon.

With import duty being what it is, US$80 is a pretty good deal for this pedal. I like playing "classic era" power-chord rock and psychedlic rock, heavy on the blues side (Hendrix Blues is a fav album). Although I've been playing two years now (both acoustic and electric), this is the first pedal that I bought. I'm not at all disappointed, as this pedal gives *way* lot of room to create your own sound, particularly if you're into psychedlic or blues. Would I buy it again? Probably, but having played with with JH-1, I'm curious now what the possibilities are with other wahs. Until then, this one is going to get a lot of (experimental) play time. :-)

First of all, I'm not a wha expert.
And I'm not a dedicated wha player. I like to use it on occasion to spice a solo or for the occasional funky tune.
I can only relate my limited personal experiences.

I've been given this by a friend some years ago (5-6-7-8 ??).
I didn't have a wha before and I really tried hard to love this one (cause it's a good friend) but I never really succeeded.
Recently, I could A/B 6 newer Dunlop Wha's and I must admit that the JH-1 is vintage, certainly, but also the worst among those I tested.

The sweep range is narrow.
Stock, it emphases on low-mids which might be OK for some blues using moderate overdrive.
It doesn't handle high gain well at all !
It was hardly usable for clean funky playing.

I messed with the internal rack/pinion which enabled to slightly adjust the main frequency sweep spot. When moving it up to maximum.
It's slightly better for your typical screaming high gain solos. But it's still not very good (my rating would increase from 2 to 4).
But then it becomes completely useless for clean playing, completely fucks up the sound with ear piercing high freq peaks.
I tried different rack/pinion positions during all those years ...

The only use I found was to have it after distortion to achieve
a phaser like effect.

I'm glad I eventually sold it.

BTW, among those tested, I liked the 535Q the most because it lets you adjust the sweep spot and Q value in order to find a usable tone for all applications (clean, overdrive, moderate and high gain)

Never had a problem during the many years I had it.
Eats batteries rather quickly. Adaptor is suggested.
I messed with the internal rack several times in order to achieve different frequency ranges. It always worked...

Playing since I was 20 (I'm 37 now) on various equipment, mostly
low to mid level quality. ("Low" being above the "Entry-Level" quality)

To me, it's just an old, out-dated wha unit that could still get
some restricted use.
But there is much better nowadays.

I can hardly imagine anyone achieving Hendrix like tones with this unit ... what the name seamed to imply ... ????

It's freaking wah..all you do is step on the SOB. Any moron can figure that out. I'm scoring it low just cause I hate the damn sound of the thing.

I played it with different stomp boxes, but mainly used my Strat with SRV pickups and my Marshalls. From the moment I bought it I thought..."Wow, sweet, I'm gonna sound just like Hendrix!" Well sorry son, I learned that it's not the gear, it's the freakin Heart 'n Soul. Anyways, Yes it does accenuate the lower frequencies; however, I find it completely hard to believe that Jimi actually had his wah's (which were just Cry Baby's) modified for lower frequencies ie. more bass out the the wah. If anything it sound like Jimi had his wah's set up to get more range, especially mid range out of his sound, it sounded like he got alot more range out of his wahs. Anyways, when I step on the bitch I started pickin up radio stations on my damn pickups! And believe it ain't the pick-ups cause my Vox NEVER did that. Bottom line: I hate the sound out of this thing, and I think any true Jimi, classic rock and blues fan would too.

Well I had it for only a year and I barely used it cause I hated it so much. However, when my radio was broken I did use it to pick up some baseball games hehe ;-P

IMHO I'f you use the wah clean with no fuzz, distortion, you could get by , however any little overdrive and it goes to crap. Jimi would have definately been disappointed. Please don't get suckerd just cause it's got his name on it. In my opinion and experience got with a different dunlop, vox, or even a damn morley. Hopefully this helps. PEACE LOVE AND HAPPINESS.

That "3" is based soley on the fact that the toe switch was misadjusted right out of the box (probably because they chose to save 1 cent and used a crappy soft felt pad that deforms immediately).

Other than that, it's a Wah pedal... how hard COULD it be to use?

I'm currently playing a fat strat thru a digitech rp100, ibenez tube screamer & a carvin sx200 amp: The rp100's wah is MUCH better and it took about 5 seconds to tweak it to sound like my good old vox crybaby. The tube screamer beats dunlop's fuzz curcuit cold as well. I was using a mid 60's vox crybaby for years (and loved it) until it finally just disintegrated last year. This thing STINKS in comparison. Yeah, it has that lower frequency sound that jimi made a living with but it has NO midrange. It's like a light switch - either all bottom or all top in less than a 1/4" of pedal sweep.

Like I said, the toe switch was crap right out of the box. I reshimmed it and it failed again in less than two hours. Otherwise it LOOKS like you could run it over with a tank and it would still work.

Oh yeah... during that two hours the ridiculously placed (right up tight against the 'out' jack) AC adapter jack repeatedly walked out and I 'went silent' a total of seven times.... Thank god it was only practice and not a paying crowd. I would NEVER trust this thing enough to use in front of an audience.

Multiple emails to techsupport went unanswered. Guess they know it's a piece of crap and don't care if it works. ...Guess that might cut into their profits.

I've been playing for 36 years. The band I'm in now is doing 60's/70's stuff since we all grew up listening to it and at our age, this is all about US having fun. This SHOULD have been perfect since I do A LOT of Hendrix. I'll never buy anything again with the Dunlop name on it and advise you not to either.

Not so easy to use. Switch is picky. As felt compresses over time, pedal becomes difficult to switch. An easy fix. However I view this as a long term design flaw.

Just what I needed. Compared to a Morley, other Crybabys, and the Boss multi-Wah. The Boss was a great all purpose wah that had many things I'll probably never use plus switch was even weirder on that one.

I didn't like the Clean sound on the morley. It sounded like a phaser and had no "vowel" quality.

I liked pretty much all of the crybabys. I settled on the Hendrix model because it sounded best clean and my applications for wah often involve clean playing.

All dunlop Crybabys alter the tone when off so I plan to do the true bypass mod. Sometimes I get radio stations, but that is rare and there is a mod I plan to do for that.

I do not know why Dunlop doesn't revise their plans on these pedals. My guess is because a DPDT switch costs double what a SPST switch does. Overall a good product, but could use revisoin. Also this unit costs too much for the novelty that it is. The case probably costs more than the electronics. The case seems like Iron or aluminum. It is probably aluminum because it is cheaper and lighter (cheaper on shipping). Construction is pretty good, but jacks are wired directly to board so I know I'll have to buy new jacks in the future and wire them in due to my abuse.

This unit will last several years until the pot starts scratching. When that happens replace the pot ASAP because it will sound terrible. DC power is crappy (not long enough) so AC adapter is nice. This pedal is pretty no frills and that is why I bought it. Less buttons and switchs are less things I can and will break.

I give it a B+ on reliability because my original Crybaby started picking up radio stations and just didn't sound as good after I replaced the pot. It lasted about 8 or 9 years with me so I guess it is a good value, but my dad Had a Mosrite Fuzzrite for 30 years and worked like it was day 1. Moving parts = stuff that will break quickly.

I don't bother with CS support. I like to get things done quickly. Overall they seem helpful because they give you a parts order form knowing you are going to break stuff in the near future. I never had to order anything. Guitar Center had my part in stock.

I sort of have a style of my own. I use all kinds of silly crap like pitch shifters and drum sticks. Been playing 12 years. 50/50 on buying another Wah ever again. It doesn't really drive the mainstay of my songs.

It has a good Jimi tone. I can do Voodo Chile with it. Yeah it isn't as treble as the original, but you can fix that with your amp. Jimi played at 11 most of the time so pussy practice amps won't really do this pedal justice (sorry poor guys, I am still there too, just keep keep saving your $$$ it is worth it).

I wish it had trus bypass and a better switch.

I am happy it has AC power and I can probably put a felt furniture protector sticky on the switch to make it easier to switch.

I bet they could make this a passive effect like a tone know. If they could do that, they would sell the shit out of these (I'd buy one) they would be cheaper and would use less plugs (mine are at a premium) and revolutionize the Wah market.

It's very use, like others wahs. Just power on (battery or A/C adapter), step on and start you sound. There's an instructions manual (more for merchandise than for explanation) and warranty card.

My setup is: Fender American FatStrat -> Jimmy Hendrix Wah -> DOD 280 Compressor -> MXR Distortion+ -> EHX Big Muff -> EHX Small Clone -> Guyatone Vintage Tremolo -> Morley Deluxe Flanger -> ROSS Phaser -> Danelectro PB&J Delay -> BOSS Noise Gate NF-1. This specific wah-wah pedal is different from others Dunlop pedals. Standard pedals used to produces high frequency sounds, what may be strange in some performance situations. I bought this one because it has a "middle frequency" sound which is more acceptable for my ears. I use a Laney LC30 and I can get a good wah sound.

Like others said: this is a tank! Die cast aluminium body and Carling stomp switches made it strong and resistent. My unit is having a little trouble with the switches when i step on it, sometimes cutting the signal. Maybe it need to be replace, what is so early for a pedal bought last year.

As a brazilian customer, I don't think i'll send it to USA for repair. If you look inside the pedal you'll see it's very simples electronically, so i think any technician can fix it easly.

Very good pedal like many others from Dunlop. A must try if you want a mid-range sound wah. If you're looking for "THE ONE" buy a Vox wah and you'll be satisfied also. My choise for JH-1 was because it is A/C power supplied, and Vox wasn't.

The unit is easy to use just step and Wah...It's got one fuction so its not to hard to learn.

I plugg a Yamaha EG-112 into a Zoom 505 effects prosessor and a Marshall Valvestate 8080 and I think that the Cry-Baby sound good with it. But I'm not satisfied with the gap when I swich from wah off to wah on, I'm also dissapointed on the rubber-feet 'couse they keep slipping off the bults when I step on the pedal.
A good fiend of mine has got an ordinary Cry-Baby and I think that the Jimmy Hendrix model has got a wider sound.

I play hard rock 'n roll music and I think this one is a beast for killer Wah-solos. Only bad thing is that once you've got your Cry-Baby you won't stop using it and your co-guitarist will start asking if it wouldn't be his turn to do a wah-solo for once.

Diappointing. Wah, good wah I guess but no $$33##^^ wacka wacka. I got it really cheap cause the guy couldn't find cables so I could try it. So I bought it cheap without testing it. That'll learn me. Otherwise fine. But what else is there? BTW, our other guitarist has got exactly the same model and it's great. Bastard.

Light alternate (Coldplay, Something for AKate..) It's ok but not great. I use a modified Ibanez strat, jap fender tele, dml10 digital delay/modulation, boss os2 and peavey studio pro 112. I've had wah twice before on multi-fx units and they both sucked so it wins by default.

At first I din't like this pedal. Then it finally dawned on me that this pedal has a fatter wah sound. I noticed that the orginal cybaby was not as low and deep as this one, this is so much better compared moleys they have a really weak sound. Very versatile comes in handy when u make that shaft theme sound you know the whack-whaca.
I play in a metal band but we also play some reggae/funk and it works great.

My wah stopped working the oedal wasnt responding so i called the peole at dunlop and they were realy nice. They fixed the pedal for free because it kepr my reciept.

The orice im not too wild about but the sound on this thing is great.

This pedal sounds kick ass clean or distorted. You can get a very cool funkey sound, or a wonderful cheesy 80s metal sound to solo with. fantastic.

I went into the shop not wanting to spend this much money but as soon as the guy showed it to me I had to have it. Its everything you'll ever need or want from a wah wah pedal. Its pricey but well woth it.

i'm using a Mesa Boogie combo with a tube sreamer one hot rodded japanese strat and a french PRS style guitar ,Big Muff ,Daddy-o, and a memory Man delay...but i'm always changing... adding and removing gear...from time to time....but this is my basics and i had one of this whas for abut 7 years bought it from a friend.....never had a complaint...sounds good...i prefer the jimmi henrix 'cause it has a wider sweep than the standard crybaby...nice tone to.

i deppended on it everytime without a backup ...live and studio...never failed on me....except now...im sure it needs a pod sustitution...but i'm not pissed about it because it's natural after so many years rocking.

Overall it's a very nice basic wha...altough i'm buying the 535Q for the versatility...to set my oun wha sound...and to chose my settings on studio work...i think u all should do the same...

i think this is a common problem with wah pedals
if you made your own pedal board, this problem can easily be solved by adding an extra (external switch) just parallel over the other one.
rest is easy: plug it in, rock the pedal

use a decent guitar and it wont be noisy
know problems here are :
1) tone is affected when it is disabled
2) serious loss of volume when turning it on
Roger mayer claims his mod solves this though I haven't tried it

The pedal has a specific range, lower than others wah's
this means a good bass respons but absolutely not the shrill highs
of eg a vox. Do you hate high scriecing that make your spine shiver, get this one...

the er... whacka-whacka sound is indeed almost missing on this pedal
although after some serious and extreme tone tweaking it may be usable
but to be frank, it's missing

this one has a perticular sound (rather low range)
it's also very sensitive so learn to work it...

It's true that you have to step quite hard on it to switch it on/off.
There's also a small delay when switched off. Installing the wah is a peace of cake.

This wah pedal has an enormous range and a well articulated wah. You can use it to play Voodoo chile (slight return) except for the muted notes in the beginning of the song, because it doesn't have that wacka wacka sound :( You can however upgrade your wah by going to www.rogermayerusa.com (This is the guy who optimized Hendrix's pedal, so it's very reliable).

It can handle a lot of wheight, so it won't break (unless your name is Marlon Brando, hehe).

I mostly play rock, blues and reggae with it. With this pedal, you can easily change a simple riff or chord progression in something spectacular.

Pretty easy to switch over, but some force is necessary.

I had the thing for 20min and i broke the switch. Other than that the thing is built like a brick. I gig with no backup as one isnt needed.

Aint worth the trouble. It took 4 weeks for them to send me a new pedal when the switch broke.

I bought this pedal in order to sound a little more like Jimi, without a lot difficulty of use. After all I am still just begining.
I found that it is easy to use,except that it catches when you bring it up to high. other wise its great.

I used a very simple set up of a squier stratocaster and a Peavey "rage 158" amp. I found the sound to good enough as to play a vast aray of Jimi's songs such as " voodoo chile". I also use it to play at events such a a baseball game that I proformed the star spangled at it sounded great in a larg open area.

Every now and aging it stops on me but to offen.

Have had to call.

If you want the sound, buy the pedal.

In order to improve switching, just cut away the rubber pads ( and eaven the vilt beneath the rocker.

I've heard a lot jh-1 wah's cause i modify them. They sound all different!!!. Put 10 original jh-1 wah's to the test and they all sound different. I've heard quite good ones and very poor ones. But there's defenately no wacka wacka in this pedal when original and sounds vary from very muddy to shrill and piercing. The all have one thingin common: little range. First 50 % of sweep is practically worthless with no bass. When you change in and output cabs and the cab on the pot you get real good impovement of sound and wacka wacka. The pedal sucks sound, especially high frequenties when switched off. In order to solve this problem simply replace switch for dpdt-switch for true bypass.

Somethimes the on/off switch can get stuck and no sound will be heard.
You have to push very hard to switch on and off.
The pedal is very sturdy and relyable.

I do play all kinds of styles. I've been playing for about 10 years know and i find the original pedal pretty worthless. it sucks lots of tone and therefor useless when gigging cause when switched on and rocker down you do not hear anything!.
So: poor sound, tone sucking when switched on but also when off and independable switching. I've modified mine and now it's a pretty good wah, but for people who want to buy this original i won't recommend this pedal...

No Brainer

Works well for me. I compared it to the Vox, standard Crybaby, and two different Morleys all rigged together in an A/B (really A/B/C/D) set up. The range was the most useful of the lot. Bottom is a bit muddy but the top doesn't get so shrill it breaks your teeth like the regular Crybaby did. Very organic sound. Very quiet. The Morleys sounded sterile.

Overall this is a pretty good pedal. I use a variety of guitars with single coil and humbuckers. The signal goes through a Sabine tuner to a TS-9 Tubescreamer to a DOD Chorus to the JH-1 Wah and on to a Fender Blues DeVille 4x10. The Chorus adds a little high end even when off and sharpens up the signal losses caused by the other pedals. I run power out to all my pedals so battery life and associated tone issues are really non-issues. This is where the Vox lost out right away - no 9V power input! A word to the prospective Wah buyer: Audition well before you buy. Be ruthless and compare all available offerings as long as you need to. Remind the sales geek that this is your $100 and you will make an informed decision whether he wants to be bothered or not. As an Engineer in the electronics manufacturing field I can attest to the variations expected in components. There will be some sound variation from pedal to pedal, no matter the quality of construction. Based on the wide range of reviews prior to this one, I think my point is well illustrated even accounting for personal taste.

Most wahs are simple, ecspecially cry babies cause all ya have to do is step on it and there ya go its that simple.

Most people think that this pedal sounds bad because of the "muddy" sound it produces. I think that dunlop did a good job on trying to recreate the 60's wah sound.

Most cry babies,in my opinion, have good reliability because of the heavy duty steel that they are made with.

I've really haven't had any trouble with my pedal so I haven't had to send it in yet( hopefully never )

The band I'm in play rock, which we want cool solos in our songs so we use cry babies.I have a Zoom 505ii and a boss DS-1 which help ad a unique twist to things.

i just got this 2 days ago and i am pleased except when the pedal is all the way back the guitar souds "muffled"

the first time i played a wah was when i played my friends wah wah on his Line 6 POD foot board, so then i got Jimi Hendrix wah for $89 and that was less the their Fulltone Clyde WAH WAH which was $170 so for the price it was worth it. For my first wah, its good.

i was gonna get a Bad Horsie Steve Vai wah but i was talked out of it by sum damn worker, oh well, live and learn. Its good, not great, but good none the less. but if it were stolen i would get the CLyde WAh, dont waste your time with this, unless its $80 cheaper than the CLyde

The only thing that could be better is that there is no visual information about effect on/off. It could do with an easy led, especially on dark stages where you can't hear yourself all that well.

This thing is noisy, but hey, they all are (exept the one on for instance the BOSS gt-5, but man, does that thing sound like crap).
It creates a very fat wah-sound, great for those high-gain sounds (I use a 5150), but nout so great for clean, as it cranks up the sound a little bit...

I don't thinh this thing will ever break, even if I will throw out of a window of a sky-scraper.

I've had this pedal for about 4 years, and in the beginning I thought it was pretty decent. Then my friend dropped it. After that I didn't think it sounded so great. Of course it was just the way I was playing it. My pot wasn't busted, which is what I originally thought. I can understand how some of these reviewers will say the sound sucks, how it's muddy, or there's to much low end. This is true. The range on this pedal is amazing. When it is first purchased, the rotating pot controller thing (pardon the term, it's late and I can't think of the proper word) that makes the "wah" sound is stuck in the middle. If you open the bottom metal part up and turn the pot so that it's as far as it can go towards the more trebley side, this should give you an insane range. This works great for me. Of course my setup might work differently for others. My most basic (and best) setup is my strat to a Tube Screamer (Ohhh how I love this pedal), to my Peavey Classic amp. Put the reverb on 5, use the neck pickup, stick the wah BEFORE the distortion, not after (make sure it's trebly), and rock out. It screams. Now granted it took me FOUR long years to get my sound the way I want it with this pedal, and it still isn't perfect, but then again, the tone is in the fingers.

No backpu necessary, just some extra batteries. It resembles a battleship. 'Nuf said.

I play rock, mostly classic rock. Actually, only classic rock. I love blues, Stevie Ray is a HUGE inspiration, Clapton is God, and Red House by Hendrix makes me keal over and drool on myself. Pink Floyd is practically my religion, so I try to cop Gilmours style alot (not his licks, his style....big difference). I'm after tone and getting my own sound, and I know what I like, so this pedal is pretty much an accessory. I can do without it. But I've figured out how to modify it and use it, so why not? It works great, sounds great, gets that "White Room" sound when I want it to. Great vintage sound. It's very tricky yo use it though, but when you get it, Voodoo Chile is no problem. If I lost it, I would probably get another one only because I know how to manipulate it to get the sound I want. If I got something different it would my tone. I only recommend this pedal to people that want something different, something expressive, and something that doesn't sound fake and digital and computerized like most equipment on the market today. Not for those that want instant results, not for the weak.

Pretty easy to use, just step on it and it starts to cry. The only bad thing about it is the wah is a little tough to switch on and off as the button is hard to press down, especially when sitting down.

I play a Left handed american standard strat through a small marshall amp. I was looking for a wah that could get that Voodoo Chile/White Room sound. This wah doesn't get it but it comes pretty damn close. Anyone who complains about this sound is looking for a wah that is EXACTLY like Hendrix. Well your not gonna get it and you may never get it. Hendrix's sound will never be duplicated so you might as well stop bitching and get you own style. After a couple of tries i found that i could get any sound i wanted out of it and the only problem i had was when you take you foot of the pedal the voume allmost dissapears.

This wah is great if you are looking for a simmple wah that can handle a wide variety of music. It has some flaws, but they can all be fixed with a little bit of custumizing. If i lost this wah, I'd definately get another one.
