This is basically a phase shifter (and vibrato) housed in a heavy-duty wah type pedal. You control the rate/speed of the sweep with your foot.
It's very easy to use and can be set with a knob on the side for max or min effect.

Sound Quality : 9
I use it w/ my '91 Strat and '98 Jackson guitars into my home studio mixer or a small Fender amp. It's very quiet and the effect is actually pretty subtle. The vibrato is a bit weird-good in a quirky way, but not all that useful. The chorus (actually a phase shifter) is excellent and was created to simulate rotating speakers as used w/ organs. The great thing about this pedal is that it can be used so creatively. It's not just a flavor-of-the-month type sound that you'll soon get tired of. You have to work it, practice it-just as you do with your guitar. If you're the impatient type, you may try it out quickly and not hear much. But put some time in with it and you'll find that it's a true sonic sculpting tool. Blend it w/ a good overdrive pedal and it's a trip into the realm of Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower. (The manual says to put the Rotovibe last in your chain and this works well for many things, but I found that putting it first before the overdrive, yielded a much fuller Hendrix/Trower sound).

Reliability : 10
No problems yet. This is built like a tank and since I take good care of my equipment, I feel it'll last a lifetime.

I've never dealt w/ Dunlop directly, so can't rate their service.

Overall Rating : 10
I grew up with Classic Rock, but I'm basically an Experimental guitarist these days. As I said above, if you just plug into this pedal, turn up and wait for the thing to make you sound good, it won't. However, if you're the type of player that can get great sounds out of your guitar with just your fingers, even when it's unplugged, then you'll notice the subtle changes in tone that this pedal creates are limitless. It's an experimenter's dream.

Pretty easy to use.
You turn it on and off like you would a crybaby pedal ... it has a knob to select how much of an effect you want and also has a small switch to the side which changes the pedal from chorus to vibrato.

Sound Quality : 10
This pedal is pretty quite (not noisy at all).
The pedal sound pretty close to a Uni-Vibe (when in "chorus" mode ... which really sounds closer to a phaser than a chorus). You can get some really cool sounds out of it in both modes but my favorite mode is the chorus mode with the knob pointing toward the front (bottom) foot.

Reliability : 10
I bought my pedal used off of Ebay and it has been giged with (not by me, but the previous owner) and the paint is peeling in sections but overall the pedal is holding up.
Dunlop doesn't make the Rotovibe in "this" model number (JH-4S) anymore they now call it JD-4S, so this pedal is from the first run and I'm sure it will last for years.
The pedal does go through some batteries but I use an A/C adapter so I don't have to worry about that part.

I haven't never delt with them.

Overall this is a good "uni-vibe" pedal ... it's close but it still has a cool sound.
I bought one of these pedal new years ago (when they first came out) and the guy that sold it to me said it would do tremolo (I was looking for a tremolo pedal) so I took it home and it doesn't do tremolo so I took it back (pretty funny story now ... since I did end up getting another one of these pedals).
The only thing wrong with the pedal is to me they cost too much for what they do, that's why I bought mine used.

Easy to use pedal. Plug in, choose either chorus/vibrato and off you go. Got this 2nd hand, so there is no manual, but you can download it from the Dunlop website. Not that you need it...

I bought this as a replacement for my Danelectro Chicken Salad Vibrato, as I wanted a real time speed control and also the Chicken Salad's effect was very weak if the speed control was under 12 o'clock. This sounds absolutely fantastic - it is about 4 years old and it still sounds perfect! At the moment I have put it 2nd in my effects chain, after my wah. I haven't found the sound to be weak, although it is a little less noticeable with the distortion on. My signal chain looks like this - Guitar (tele, les paul, strat copy -> vox wah -> marshall ed1 Compressor -> DOD juice box -> EH big muff pi -> marshall avt100 combo. I bought this pedal to get a swirly univibey sort of sound, and it is spot on! It is the only rotary speaker pedal I know of with a foot controller already included - great value for money. The best example I can think of for the sound is the start of Lightning Crashes by Live, or the main riff from White Discussion, also by Live. It sounds spot on.

Reliability : 10
This thing has lasted four years without a problem. I would gig without a backup, as it is what I would describe as a luxury effect - you can still play the song without the pedal working, although I do not forsee this...

Never had to deal with them, don't intend to.

I play alternative/indie type stuff with the occasional dip into blues. I have been playing for 4 years now and if this pedal was to be stolen or lost I would have a nervous breakdown and then go and get a new one. This pedal cannot be beat for a thick swirly wavy sound - I don't really use the vibrato setting much, but it sounds very similar to the guitar from Low Man's Lyric off the Reload album. Sort of. This thing is fantastic - forget the overpriced overrated univibe and get this - it has its own unique sound and is the only thing on the market IMHO that is great value for money. Definetely the under dog or the unappreciated cousin in the rotary speaker family.

Think Crybaby and you've got it. Has an intensity adjustment on the side, and a little push switch to select chorus or vibrato.

Sound Quality : 10
I use this with a bunch of Telecasters and a '66 reissue Strat through a solid state Fender Stage 112 SE. I think the Rotovibe sounds best when put through your amps effects loop (if you're not using a distortion). It makes the swishy chorus sound really stand out, even with the intensity rolled off somewhat. I never use the vibrato function. Overall, I think this pedal sounds great. When I used it live (when I had a band), I always had other people asking me what it was or simply "What was that sound you got in [song title]??". We had one sing where I used it to make the guitar sound kind of like one of those old funk organs, and it worked great. I wouldn't say it sounds like a Leslie, or chorus, or anything else.

Well, I've owned about three of these. The first one basically quit on me after a few months, and I was too lazy to get it taken care of through the warranty. The second one lasted through a lot of abuse and gigs, but I actually broke the switch the day before a very important show (go figure). I couldn't get a replacement switc in time, so I bit the bullet and bought another (it was a very integral part of some of our songs...like for the faux organ effect). I've had the third one for about 6 years now, and have had no problems with it at all. So, they're not indestructible or anything, I would say more around average. It's got moving parts that do need to be greased up every so often.

never dealt

I like blues, classic rock, "Grunge" and other types of stylings. I've been playing 13 years, have been in a few regularly gigging bands and have probably owned somewhere around 2 dozen different pedals. I like a very simple setup, never more than I need, and I would have to include a Rotovibe, along with my old Boss tremolo, my Vox wah, and maybe an extra overdrive pedal (I get a great sound out my amps distortion channel, and it suits what I do perfectly). My rig would kind of feel incomplete without it. Honestly, it's probably the most delicate pedal in my setup (the Boss tremolo has endured so much crap I can't even believe it, and the Vox has remained pretty solid as well), but that's ok by me. It's earned its keep may times over.

This pedal is almost idiot proof. One input, one output, efect intensity knob, switch for Chorus/Vibrato, foot control for effect speed on/off. In my experience, there are really no bad sounds you can get from this pedal.

Sound Quality : 8
I play with a Danelectro 56 U2 (I hear the laughs, but it's really a good guitar) into the Rotovibe, into a Tubeworks 7100 dual 12. When you play this through distortion, it enhances the intensity of the effect. If you have the pedal on chorus, heel down, through distortion, you can get a pretty good flange sound. Also, clean, heel down, chorus will give you a nice slow phasing effect.

Reliability : 8
The only thing wrong with this pedal is the output jack sometimes cuts out if you kick the pedal or trip over the cord. Easy enough to fix, and since this pedal is pretty massive, it takes a good solid kick. However, since this pedal is used, and I think it's 3-5 years old, and it only has this one minor problem, that has to say something about the quality and reliability. If this pedal didn't have the output jack problem, I would have no problem giving it a ten.

Customer Support : 9
I've only dealt with them through e-mail, but they were very prompt and helpful. I had a question about the trimpots inside on the pc board, and I had an answer by the next morning. Would give them a ten, but I don't know if the real people are more courteous than the ones answering the e-mail.

Overall Rating : 9
I play all styles of music, from funk and blues, to punk and ska. This pedal can find a spot in all of them (well, maybe not in punk), and it will sound good. I've been playing for almost ten years, and this is only the third effect I've bought. I purchased a Crybaby and DOD Octoplus a few years ago on a whim, and I absoultely loved the crybaby. The octoplus is pretty much worthless. I liked the crybaby so much, and was impressed by it's quality that I fell in love with Dunlop. I've always wanted a Uni-Vibe, but I'm too cheap to buy one, so when I saw the Rotovibe on Ebay, I went for it. If this pedal were stolen, I would hunt down the schmuck who stole it, beat them like a red-headed stepchild, and dig out their left nut with a rusty fork. Then I'd go play some music.
