EBS UniChorus

This pedal takes a lttle work to get some great sounds, but not much. Two dials...how hard can it get? The manual is pretty straightforward and helpful.

Read my review on the Aguilar Tone Hammer for what I use on stage and studio. My Unichorus isn't noisy at all. The chorus depth, especially with the rate up, can get pretty ridiculous but fun, nonetheless. I dial in the DEPTH in at about 2:00, and the RATE is barely up. This makes a really nice modern shimmer. If I turn it to about 10:00, then it sounds really fat and nice, actually. Both these sounds, especially the latter, sound much meatier than my previous Boss Chorus, which was nice in itself. But, the EBS sounds much fuller to me, and not as sharp or brittle as the Boss. There aren't any FILTER or EFFECT knobs, which I thought would suck at first. The volume is set adjust to your normal playing volume, and the E and the B sound much fuller than the Boss, so no muss, no fuss. The flanger effect is pretty subtle, but cool...too much, to me, sounds overboard on bass. The chours, of course, sounds really colorful and rich, but I LOVE the Phaser Mode. I like to write a lot of open, almost "sonata" sounding solos with clean and shimmering bell-sounding chords and ringing open notes. I switch this effect on, and WOW...beautiful, maybe trance-like tones!

I already dropped this thing once, but it's still okay. This thing WILL get repaired or replaced if it does break.

I haven't dealt with EBS at this point.

This is a fantastic pedal, and I'd be hard-pressed to find another one so well-tailored for bass. Although $200 for a chorus pedal is too much, it's the best one I've owned, bar none.

If you have the scratch, BUY ONE.

2 types of choruses and a flange. Rate. Depth. Never had a manual and never needed one.

To my ear, chorus is not a pitch-specific effect. That is to say, a guitar chorus pedal will work just as well on a bass as the EBS does. Better, actually. This chorus is good, but it tends to distort too easily with high gain input (active bass users beware!) and sounds murky compared to some other choruses I've tried. In the same price range are quality offerings like the Analogman Standard Chorus, which with a deep switch gives a far more natural-sounding, less muddying effect with far more control. When I compared them, the EBS went back on ebay from whence it came.

As for the flange, a lot of people have hated on it. I find it to be a decent effect, though more phaserish and less dive-bomber jet plane. Bottom line, I didn't find it to be any better than the flanger and phaser on the Boss ME-50B, so it was disappointing for the price.

Okay, I have an old grey model, and I don't know what the deal is, but mine came with an adaptor jack that didn't fit standard 9vs. Never seen that on an EBS or any other pedal. Also, mine was the only pedal probably ever produced ever that had the input on the left side and the output on the right. I cannot explain this.

Once I had the jack replaced, it played fine and seemed very sturdy. I'd gig with no backup. When the whole band's playing you can barely tell this box is on, anyway.

I play a Warwick Corvette Double Buck into a Markbass tiltback combo. I use EBS for comp and octave and they're great. This is a good chorus pedal, but not as good as the deep-switched Analogman. With the heavy low end boost I prefer on the Double Buck, distortion is all too common coming through this pedal. That said, the chorus and flange effects still sounds pretty good... but for $200 I want a superior sound and this isn't it.

I would advise to get dedicated EBS or other high-end bass pedals for effects like compressor, octaver, distortion, or envelope filter where the necessity to capture a bass's tonal range is essential. But for mods and time effects, I go in a different direction.

It's ok, a bit expensive

what's there to know about a chorus pedal? It sounds like a nice chorus.

I use it on custom-made basses going into gk1001rb or a markbass setup.

At the setting i want to use it on (barely norticable) it distorts.

I have it in chain after the ebs compression, octabass, and envlope filter.

Before you tell me it's overloaded, I took it back and checked it in store on its own and it distorted. I swapped it with another unit and it distorted too. I plugged my vintage TC Electronic SCF and it didn't distort at all in the same chain.

It seems like a tough unit

of course i would gig without a backup, it's just a chorus, grab an ibanez or tc electronic pedal if you're serious about this sound.

The worst support I ever received.
The Australian distributor, Lamberti Bros, told me if I wanted to wait for a replacement it'll be 3 months.
They said they tried the one I returned and it was ok as for as they were concerned.
The retailer explained to them the fault I found was in the two they had in the shop and told them step-by-step how to find the fault.
They said if I want it fixed it will not be high on their priority since there's nothing wrong with it they could see. Or I will have to wait till they get the new ones, if they get it in the order that is, for at least 3 months.

If it were stolen or lost? I would never let that happen. It will never again grace my pedals.

I would definitely recommend you buy something else. A tc pedal is better at that price range.

This review is nearly the same as the one I did about the DynaVerb.

Very easy to use. Like all EBS pedals.

First of all : There is NO "true Bypass". No matter what they tell or write you - don't get fooled by those "sidestepping" answers you get, when you ask the "True bypass"-question. That would be no problem if the buffer amps they use were as expected, when reading the price tag. But the quality is subterranian. While the Chorus itself is OK and the depth of the sound is not damaged, the amount of hiss and high frequency noise is ridiculous. RIDICULOUS. With no effect turned on : RIDIICULOUS. This gets more than doubled, when you put yout foot on the switch. Plus you get an annoying high frequency noise for free that covers the signal all the time. Imagine what happens if you put two or three EBS Black Label Pedals in chain like I did. That???s what we call a WHITE NOISE GENERATOR ...
Forget about recording and forget about playing your bass over a good PA-System. And let me alone with loopers.
Plus : The sound is about 2-3 db louder when the effect is switched on. Thats not what I want.
The only usable setup might be a standalone 15?????? cab with NO tweeter ??? and the amp dialed treble and middle to zero.

But that's not what I associate with EBS gear. EBS has a very good reputation for that HiFi & slap sound like Markus and delivers very good amps and cabs but their effects by far do not match this standard. For me it's a marketing-miracle that EBS can sell this kind of cr%p. I use Fenders and Laklands over a TD650 or a DB750 with matching cabs. I had a DynaVerb, UniChorus, MultiComp and an OktaBass - but now there are no more EBS pedals in my setup...
BTW : A sound engeneer told me : If you want hiss - get this !

The pedal is well built - no complaints here.

I had email correspondence and got quick answers, and it seemed to me, that they are aware about their hiss- and noise-problem of their pedals. But they didn't let it out. I can understand that behaviour, but wouldn't it be better to make an end to this bad game and change the layout of the pedals to get to the level of their amps and cabs ?
They told me to send my pedals to their customer support to check if they are ok, but those guys wanted to charge me 35 Euros per pedal in advance. So I A/B-ed them with new ones in a musicstore - and now they are all gone ...

I play Rock, R&B and Fusion. I like to work with effects on the bass. I depend on my gear and my sound because it pays my rent. I do some education too. If someone asks me what good pedal he could buy -sorry EBS - I can't recommend Black Label pedals ... no way.
There are really good pedals on the market, but they are not built by EBS.

Only two knobs and a switch, very easy

This little box has the best chorus sound I'ver ever heard. I use this pedal with a lakland 55-02 and a lakland joe osborn fretless, through an swr 2*10 amp. It sings like no other, especially with fretless it cries.
Is also dead quiet, no noise at all.
The only thing I think is pretty lame is the flanger, its more a wavy chorus, not very nice. But I never use that. the pitch-modulator has a coo, sound aswell. But I mainly use it for chorus.

It's made off solid steel. It really is a tank. I don't know about the switch though, it looks and feels a bit flimsy so I expect it to brake at some point. But thats easily replaced.

never dealt with them, but I hear good things. I won't rate it because I don't have personal experiences

I play a lot off different styles off music, but mainly rock music. In ballads and slower parts in the songs it really complements the mood. Like I said, with fretless playing its fantastic. I've been playing for about 6 years now and am a real gear freak, so I always llok for the best equipment and THIS IS IT!
If it were stolen or lost I'd buy it again.
I love the sound, ease off use and reliability. What I don't like is the price off the pedal. ???230,- is a lot off money for something this small!
I compared it to a wide variety of chorusses: line-6 space chorus, boss chorus, behringer, MXR and some others and this one was by far the best. It helps to make beautifull music

The EBS Unichorus has controls for rate (speed), depth (intensity) and a 3 way switch for "standard" chorus, flanged chorus and what I call "vibrato" chorus. One nice feature is that the led pulses with the rate of the chorus.There is also a mini pot inside to blend more instrument or effect. It very easy to dial up usuable sounds, EXCEPT I wish the blend pot was on the outside, since this is important especially for bass. Otherwise I would give ease of use a 10.

I am using primarily Fender and Modulus basses into and Eden amp/Eden, Mesa Boogie cabinents. The effect chain is EBS Multicomp-EBS Octabass-EBS IQ-MXR EVH Phase 90-Demeter Tremulator-EBS Unichorus.
The Unichorus is a very rich sounding chorus. I've owned an original Boss CE-2,Boss CE-2B (brown enclosure),Russian EH Smallstone and Alesis Midiverb 3. The Unichorus is the best with bass, no bass or volume loss,is not noisy, blends with your original sound the best, isn't thin or metallic.It also works great with other effects and has a stereo out which really makes this pedal shine. Of the 3 settings the standard chorus is of course the most usuable/common. The Flange setting is more of a variation on chorus "flanged chorus" than a true flanger.I find the settings here are more usuable on bass than a dedicated flanger, think deep deep chorus. I own a MXR micro flange and an EH Electric Mistress, extreme flanger sounds are NOT in the Unichorus. The pitch modulation/vibrato setting yields even more variations of chorus.. a very cool "quivering watery" sound giving the Unichorus lots of versatilty. This and the EBS Multicomp (always on) are my most used effects. There are many types of chorus/flange/phase/modultion etc. available, but not that many that work well with bass, the Unichorus does.

The EBS pedals are well consructed ( I have 4), but I still don't like those mini 3 way switches...but no problems so far.

There customer service in Sweden is the best, if you have a problem they will take care of you.

The more I use EBS pedals the more I am impressed with how they add/blend with the bass. The Unichorus is definately the best chorus I have used on bass. For a very long time I didn't use chorus because I found the other choruses I had to be sterile, not so with the Unichorus, giving the bass that little extra richness. There are many applications you can use the Unichorus for, from slap to fretless. On the negative side I purchased this used and it was still expensive, the new price for the EBS pedals is very very expensive.

Very easy to use. 2 knobs. Manual is straight foward and short. But really. Do you really need a manual when you buy a chorus? It's basically made to support a bass, but they also stated its for guitar and keyboards. But they really are mainly a bass supported company. I can only review this pedal as a bassist. I heard some good reports from guitarist. But again i can only judge this produst as a bassist.
But.. This pedal for bass is excellent and i recommend buying one. I have been in a chorus searching mode for a few years and find this product easy and fun to use. And i bought at a good price on EBAY.

There are many many chorus pedals in the market today. Chorus is one of the most sort after pedal and propably the most researched by the one's buying a pedal. For bass it is the first pedal you buy, on most occassions. I have tried Boss, TC Electronics and EBS etc etc inaddition to owning them. Each having there own character. To me (and again Im only speaking as a bassist) the best sounding choruses are the TC electronics and EBS Unichorus. I give the Unichorus a 10 yet again it has its own character than the TC Electronics which I also give a 10. The EBS chorus will not sound as lush and smooth than the TC. Yet it does sound lush but for bass you do not loose as much of the bottom end. I know many bass choruses give you the option to cut the chorusing on the bottom end. Boss is one of them. But the boss does not have the rich chorus effect of the TC or the EBS. But they are not as expensive either. The EBS is very easy to use and although i never use flange or a detune type sounds I can only speak of its chorus effect. And that sounds so good. I think they locked in on a chorus pedal that is perfect for us. Easy to use, Great chorusing and does not change the character of the bass you are playing.

You can ask anyone. EBS makes a durable product. I have the IQ, octabass, compressor and now the chorus pedal by EBS. Never had a problem with any of them.

A great sounding chorus. A bassist companion when chorus is desired.
Compared with other choruses for bass this is the best I believe.

The use of this unit is very easy. You can get very good sounds almost instantly. Only when you want to switch among the modes (chorus- pitch moduler- flanger), you have to use your hands. With good foot control:), you can edit the both depth and rate in real time.

I believe all the sounds are great. No hiss or change of volume occur when I switch it on and off. I use the unit with my Warwick bass and EBS drome combo amp. All the sounds are very usable, unless you set both the knobs to maximum settings. The flanger sounds really great with slapping, the chorus with high-register double stops and the pitch moduler (low settings) adds a nice colour to just about any bass line.

I use it with my EBS combo amp, which powers the unit through its fantom power feature; therefore, I had no trouble with the batteries suddenly becoming dead. I use it without a backup and it has never let me down.

I think this is a great unit. You don't have to tweak it a lot to get a great sound. I play with several bands (jazz, folk-rock, funk) and I never gig without it, it became a part of "my sound"

Getting a good sound of this pedal is very simple. With two knobs you change the depth and the rate of the effect and with a small switch you can change the effect mode (chorus, pith modulation, flanger). The range of the sound is large, so at high speed rate is sometimes difficult match the speed you want. And - but maybe its only my problem - the mode switch is small and in a dim light on a gig little bit blind.
The manual is short, only for quick start, but probably you"ll not need it.

Sounds great! Thick, full sound. On/off switch is noiseless and the effect too. But, when you turn it on it makes you a little bit louder. But only a little bit. (That's the reason wy I don't give 10 for sound) I don't mind it. Still it is the best chorus I ever tried and heard.

When you will buy Saab or Volvo, will you buy another car as a backup? Me not!

I like EBS web sites. My EBS dealer (Alexim, Prague) is very friendly, but I never had a problem with my effect so I can't tell...

I play (folk)rock and I use this pedal in slow songs. I thing it sounds great there. I play 5 string bass (Pele). From effects I use Guyatone Bass driver, Alesis NanoCompressor and EBS UniChorus. This "toys" are connected to Ampeg B2 combo with an extension cabinet SVT 210-HE.
If I lose this pedal, I'll probably byu the next one in the first moment I can afford it. Cause it sounds great. i tried Ibanez, Arion, Boss, maybe more choruses, but EBS is still the best I ever heard.
And it sounds better when you first connect the compressor and the the Chorus.

very easy to get a lot of different chorus effects.

Two big gripes. 1 - It's friggin noisy. It adds lots of hiss and diminishes signal to noise ratio, making it unlikely to be used in the studio. I got all kinds of volume/gain problems when I ran it through the effects loop of my swr amp. 2 - A previous reviewer got right when he said it increases your volume when you activate the pedal. That's annoying.
As for the actual sounds, it's a pretty standard sounding chorus. I would say no better than the high end Boss choruses. Flanger doesn't really sound as intense as some other pedal flangers on the market. The pitch shift flanger is what sets this pedal apart from other pedal choruses, IMO. This puts it at a 7, otherwise I'd give it a 6.

I don't really use this pedal anymore, and instead prefer my boss ch-1. It's quiter, and I only use chorus sparingly anyways. In the studio, there're so many higher quality rack mount units that I doubt I'll use this pedal. This pedal is too expensive and too damn noisy. If it were a lot quieter, I'd give it an 8, as it is, it gets a 5. Any one want to buy mine? I'll take any reasonable offer.
