Pretty easy to use. 2 knobs, Muff 1 and Muff 2. Has A mode switch, single and double muff. Single muff mode uses just one knob, doulbe muff uses both. Takes some time to get the sound that you want. Wish it had a level or gain knob though.

Sound Quality : 9
I run this through a Fender Fat Strat to the muff pedal to a Vox wah to my amp wich is a Marshall 250DFX. Sounds awesome!! I do agree with the other reviewers that this pedal DOES need to bee the first in your effects chain. It does get very screechy if placed near the end. Obviously this is my main effect pedal and I have no complaints with the sound. I like the single mode with the muff turned up to about 2 or 3 O'clock, gives a great blusey sound. For sustaing distortion I put the pedal in double mode with both knobs around 3 o'clock.

Reliability : 10
Very dependable. I have used it at shoes with out a back up. Have dropped it a couple times, nothing ever goes wrong with it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never delt with them.

Overall Rating : 9
I play bluesy classic rock and this pedal is perfect. Gives a wide range of sounds, just takes some time to tweek and get it right, especially in double mode the way the two knobs cascade with each other. If it were lost or stolen , I would defiantly get a new one.
The only reason I am not giving this pedal a 10 is because I wish it ahad a level or seperatew gain knob. This would cut out the extra time it takes to tweek your soung. Other then that this is one kick ass pedal!!!

Only 2 knobs and a switch, but a little tricky. Should be seperate volumes and gain knobs for both fuzzes, it would really make everything easier. The "single" muff mode is pretty straight forward... you turn the "Muff 1" knob to turn up volume/gain. Mixing the two fuzzes in "double" mode is a little more tricky, because you have to balance it to keep it from feeding back badly... it's a cool idea, and a few great tones are to be had, however, if you're patient.

Sound Quality : 8
I expected this the be more like the Big Muff, but actually it's a beast all of it's own. Cuts in the mix better than a big muff, and is really great for chord-playing. The sustain is a little lacking... you can get ok sustain by turning Muff 2 all the way up in "double" mode, but you have to keep Muff 1 down or it'll squeal. The feel is different too... I was expecting the little nuisances to work like the Big Muff, but it didn't. Less Mushy feeling than the Muff, and less buzzy, making it better for chord playing like I said before. I could even get some ProCo Rat-esque sounds out of this baby! A lot more noisy than the NY Big Muff Reissue! Like I said, you have to balance it to keep it from squealing. Another note for those who gave this effect a bad rating: I put this effect near the end of my chain first, and it sounded horrible--weak, tinny and buzzy. But then I put it as the 1st or 2nd effect and it sounded great... and was less noisy! Best of all was when I used it as the only effect in the chain. I'm using a Fender Fat Strat -> Boss TU-2 Tuner -> Blackstone Appliances MOSFET Overdrive 2 -> Big Muff Pi (or Double Muff) -> ProCo Rat 2 -> MXR Micro Amp -> Boss RV-2 Reverb -> Line 6 DL-4 Delay Modulator -> Blackface Bassman 50w Head -> Marshall 1960A 4x10 Cab. I'm gonna give it an "8" because the sound is desireable, but the squeals and the lack of knobs is not.

Reliability : 9
Seems better built than the NY Big Muff Pi. Never had a problem with EH products, also have the NY Big Muff, and the Green Russian Big Muff.

I already am reselling it. I really LOVE the Big Muff, and that's why I bought this pedal--out of curiousity. Problem is, my second favorite part about the BM (first being the tone coloring) is the sustain, which the Double Muff only is mediocre at. As far as tone, I found it more desireable than the Big Muff for chord playing. It would be great for a distortion pedal, but I have the Rat for that, and the Rat has more sustain! It squeals and is noisy like the Rat... Basically I like it, but I'm poor and have a lack of room on my pedal board because of oversized pedals like the Big Muff & the Line 6 DL-4. May buy another one when I have more disposible income. For a beginner's distortion/fuzz, I would definately recommend it... it covers more ground than the Big Muff (overdrivey slight fuzz in single mode to all out crazy fuzz in double mode). I'm giving it a 7 because of the lack of controls means too much tweaking is needed.

2 knobs, 1 switch. Not as easy as you'd think. The knobs interact in a subtle and somewhat mysterious way. This is why I love analog fx.

Listen to the fellow below me--THIS PEDAL SOUNDS LIKE SHIT IF PUT BEHIND BUFFERED EFFECTS!!!

I had this thing in a chain after my Route 66 OD, which has a "buffered bypass". The Double Muff sounded shrill and metallic with little sustain, no matter whether the Route 66 was engaged or not. Placing the DM BEFORE the Route 66 resulted in fantastic sound + sustain.

Moral of this story: try this baby UP-FRONT.

Back to playing...

Muff 1, Muff 2, Single/Double, and the footswitch.

The sound is not a problem. It makes things wooly. I know that one solid state amp needs the treble turned down to cut the fizz fuzz. My bassman head with 2x12 cabinet loses the high-end sparkle when I hit the pedal, but that is okay. It makes for a grime instead of chime.

The manual is spare.

Sound Quality : 8
This goes with two Artinger Custom Guitars - one with P90's, the other with Duncan '59's. It works well with either one. Hum from the P's if the muff is way up (and the manual states that obvious issue). My main amp now is a sliverface Bassman head with bass and normal channels engaged. I'd rather have the amp sound shiny on its own and have a pedal to darken the sound. It appears to interact well with lighter picking, tone knob fiddling, and front/back pickups.

Reliability : 8
It's a new pedal that I will continue to put back in its plastic bag, envelop it in the bubble wrap and put it back in its li'l pine box.

I'd use it anywhere. If something happened, I'd play straight into the amp instead of beg for another pedal.

I've been playing since 1988. My favorite distortion pedal continues to be an Ibanez Modern Fusion soundtank from the early '90's. I have Boss pedals, an MXR Commande Distortion+, Zoom Ultra Fuzz, Nobels Overdrive, DOD Juice Box, etc., but the Ibanez and the Double Muff could be a one-two punch for their very different sounds. I had an ancient Big Muff Pi that was very neat and a green Russian DMP that I didn't like at all. I was hoping a lack of tone control would be a bonus for the Double Muff. I think it is better to use the amp's tone instead of complicating the issue. For the price, why not buy a US-made product?

Quick follow up to my review below. Think I found one reason why the shrill noises come out of this pedal: I placed the DM BEHIND my Maxon D&SII and it sounded TERRIBLE! A completely noisy, shrill pedal. I switched it back to first in line and both pedals sounded great again. The DM sounded shrill as hell behind the Maxon with the Maxon OFF; with the Maxon on, the problem was worse. Switched back, DM first and Maxon second, no problems using any combination of pedals: both on, DM on only, Maxon on only, good sound. I use the regular colored inexpensive cables and batteries rather than the pedal board power supply. For some reason the Maxon boosted the signal whether on or off and this caused the DM to sound terrible. Don't know whether the Maxon is "true-bypass" or not; it's and expensive pedal at about $125 (the Maxon) and I'm disappointed that it causes this problem. Perhaps this will help those of you getting shrill, tinny noises from your DM; it's a fine pedal placed in the right order with a good signal path. I'm no electronics person; just a player and this is the only "experimenting" I will spend time on with it. Sounds good first in line with my board. Best of luck to you all.

I've used a lot of pedals over the years and this one does it for me: controlled sustain. Not sure about the reviews claiming that this pedal is "shrill" or "tinny" with no sustain; must not be for everybody. Other reviews cover the feautres. Just very good controlled sustain and grind with no flab or sharp tones to my ears.

Sound Quality : 9
I used it with a Line6 POD version 1.0 both model and software. Also use it with a variety of smaller tube amps. It works best for me with the Line6 to add the warmth and sustain that is lacking in the unit. In front of an amp I use it to take leads or add a bit of fuzzy grind. This is a very controlled fuzz pedal and it is easy to see why so many artists have relied on it for years. I don't even need to use my compressor with it.

Reliability : 8
It's in my effects board and have had no problems with it. Like anything you add to your board, you have to play with the levels so that you get a good sound with the other pedals.

Customer Support : 9
I've sent my Deluxe Memory Man back to them for noisiness (the "swish" sound on repeats) and to get the on button working better. It was under warranty and they were courteous and quick. The unit came back just fine.

Overall Rating : 8
I've been playing for 20 years and have owned a variety of overdrive, fuzzes, and distortion pedals as well as other types. This is a relatively inexpensive way to get great sustain with just the right amount of compression. Perhaps you will need to modify your current amp settings to get the sound you want; it's not going to give you the grind of a MB Rectifier or a Marshall crunch sound. It's more about sustain and fuzzy rythym playing. Definitely try before you buy (as always) to see if it fits your style and expectations. I also own a Maxon D&S II (great), a 70's EH Hot Tubes (solid state that sounds like mayhem...only pedal I have that sounds like an actual power tube overdriven tube amp), as well as a Boss compressor, and my Deluxe Memory Man. Oh, also have an EH Holy Grail for some decent reverb with my small non-reverb tube amps. I wish this unit had a gain switch to vary the amount of fuzz...the Big Muff PI has this. The pedal is essentially one gain level with the level switch varying mainly volume. The Muff2 switch allows you to cascade the gain but again, with not much gain control...you have to work with both the knobs to get what's right for you. This is a good match for me to get Neil Young, Robin Trower, David Gilmore (Floyd) sounds, as well as more modern tones like Satriani (leads). It definitely fills a much-needed gap in my pedal board in providing me with the controlled sustain I was seeking. Would definitely buy another; a huge price/performer compared to some of the boutique pedals out there. Check it out.

Easy, plug and play, twist the knobs, switch between 1 or 2 muff fuzzes.

Sound Quality : 9
I am playing a telecaster into a Roland bluescube30 2x10 combo.

Muff1: mild fuzz in the clean channel. about 1/2 way up is unity, over that and volume goes up. So it could work as a volume boost with mild fuzz/overdrive. Now, in my Lead channel, Muff1 does not increase the volume of the channel as I crank up Muff1. But, oh man.........Does Muff1 add some beef to my lead channel. That extra bit of fuzz/od adds soem grind and tone to that channel. Really wierd tho....Cranked all the way, Muff1 adds no increase in volume level to the lead channel but if iswitch back to the normal channel..wham..volume boost. Cleans up when you back off the gutiar volume.

Muff2: This is the way I got it work for me. I used Muff1 knob to set volume level and Muff2 knob to set the drive level. This combo into the clean channel is a nice fuzz-distortion. Nice grind with round fuzz, violinish single notes. I had muff1 at 8:00 and muff2 and 3:00. Nice crunchy with not a lot of sustain, good for that 70's sound.

Ease of Use : 5
Ease of use, let's see... well there are only two knobs so mechanically speaking it is very easy to use. Getting a good sound out of it however is a totally different matter. This is by far the worst pedal I have ever owned.

Sound Quality : 1
I bought this pedal in hopes of upgrading my russian big muff to something that didn't require batteries and maybe offered a little bit more kick. Boy was I dissapointed. This pedal has no bass whatsoever, no fuzz, nothing at all but tinny shrill garbage no matter what settings you are using. A $20 danelectro black coffe sounds better than this pile. Do not buy one if you are looking for anything resembling good tone.

Reliability : 5
The thing looks solid enough, metal casing, etc. but I don't rely on it giving me good tone. There are much better units out there in this price range. The DOD FX69 is a wonderful buy for less money than this thing.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them but I haven't heard anything positive about them and their website is crap.

Overall Rating : 1
I play mostly Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam but have ventured into many other areas. I cannot find a use for this pedal, it's way too shrill and tinny. No warmth, no pleasant tone, no redeeming qualities. The only conceivable use for this pedal other than a $60 paper weight would be something real twangy like country maybe? That's just my best effort to suggest a genre to use it, but I think the thing is positively dreadful. I'm currently using a dod fx69 and overdriving it with a ts9dx (modded by robert keeley to sound like a ts808) and this combination blows the doors off the double muff. Do not buy it no matter how cheap you see it. It's garbage plain and simple. The russian big muff is better, the USA big muff is probably better still - will probably try that next if I can unload this double crapmaster.

Two knob operation, plus a switch to choose between the single or double effect. Simple design but there's a fair amount of sweep on each dial. It ships with a manual that basicaly says as much. I was getting decent sounds out of it within a few minutes.

Sound Quality : 9
I haven't brought this to my studio yet, but it sounded pretty good at my home setup where I tried it with a Nashville Deluxe Telecaster and an Epiphone Dot Deluxe, through a Dan Echo and into a Vox Cambridge Twin (2x10, 12AX7 hybrid circuit amp). It was easier getting good tones out of it with the Dot's humbuckers than the Tele's single coils. Upper range harmonics came out significantly better on the Dot.

I tried it on the clean channel of the amp at first to see how the effect sounded on its own and found I had to turn down the treble response on the amp. Rolling back the tone knobs helped even out the sound. In its single circuit mode the effect was somewhat understated-- especially compared to a modded Big Muff Pi that was harsh at any setting. Between 9 and 12 o'clock it sounds like an overdrive pedal, the fuzz begins to come out past 12.

Flip the switch to engage the second circuit and it starts to get fun. As some others mentioned, the sustain isn't anything to write home about until you open the throttle. After playing with the tone knobs on my guitar I was able to get a really fat, punchy tone without it sounding muddy or messy. The two knobs interact with each other more than you would expect and there's actually quite a bit of tonal range to be found with some gentle knob turning. I don't really like that pedal kills the signal when knob 1 is set to zero.

For masturbatory fun I switched to the gain channel and turned it to 10. A beautiful wall of noise erupted from the cabinet. Incredible biting sustain that decays into abstract noise-- monophonic, visual sound. The music I play has the sound of the early 90s alterna-pop & shoegaze (MBV, Afghan Whigs, Jesus & Mary Chain, Suede) and this pedal should fit very well. I ended up messing around with it for hours.

Reliability : 9
I've owned other EH pedals and have yet to be disappointed by them. This is a made-in-USA item and shares the body of the Small Stone & Small Clone. Input jacks are well constructed metal. I don't like the battery compartments on these pedals, but I'm switching to a Godlyke A/C system as soon as it comes in the mail. I would gig this without a backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 9
I got this brand new on Ebay for $58 with free shipping and 2 sets of EH strings. Idunno why dealers are giving these pedals away because I am really enjoying the sounds it has to offer. I prefer it to the Big Muff Pi largely because it's more tonally dynamic.

I've got a handful of electric guitars, including the aforementioned Dot & Tele, and a Rickenbacker 330 also. I've got a couple of modded Epiphone Galaxie 25s in my studio to run in stereo and a Fender Bassman head & cabinet. I'm excited to hear it through those soon. It's going in my pedalboard that includes a Vox V810 Valvetone od, Small Clone, Dan Echo, Guyatone MD-3, a Digitech Digiverb, Vox 847 Wah & a Boss PN-2 trem/pan.

I would get another if this were lost. It's satisfying to play with in the same way that it's satisfying to set off fireworks you bought in New Mexico.

Well laid out, but, the pedal is crap. I got this two days after I returned a reissue Big Muff for its crappiness. I thought that since it was based on an older circuit, it would be better. But, it was the polar opposite of the Big Muff - no sustain - and totally harsh. The only time it approached somewhat goodness was in 'double' mode, with Muff One cranked, and the Second one pretty cranked. But the problem there was that the volume of the pedal went so far beyond the unity gain, that if one actually set his amp to use this pedal, the moment you turned it off (to play clean) you'd die in the mix.

Sound Quality : 1
Didn't like - very harsh - hurt my ears - and I have a Boss Metal Zone.

Great idea. Great layout. i'm assuming you have seen this pedal.

I have spent about 6 hours with it and i'm very happy with the over all vibe of this pedal. BUT!! READ THIS! it has two personalities. i started off running it strait into the clean channel of my hot rod deluxe. muff 1 only. nice overdrive, no sustain. muff 1 and 2 together pretty fuzzy, no sustain. muff 1 acts like a master in this
configuration. I ran into my true bypass vintage rat r.i. into the d-muff and the same result great tones that complimented the rat nicely
but on it's own, NO SUSTAIN. then i plugged my danelectro chicken salad into it (the d-muff) and WHOA!!!!same with my boss od-3 and i'm talking with the other effects turned off. super sustain and much brighter and crunchier. my true bypass rat or soul bender sound like shit with buffered effects in front of them. I'm talking night and day here with the d-muff. if you own one please try this now. HELP ME!!
did i get defect? once again this is a true bypass effect that increases gain and sustain w/ buffered effects before it. i.e. boss, danelectro even when they are off.

this is a great fuzz or o.d. when you want alot of presence. muff 1 by itself is a very sweet. with a buffered pedal before it, more like a treble booster. and a damn good one. 1 and 2 together after a buffered pedal can wail with crisp top and bottom. i've owned 100 pedals. None of them E~H this thing sounds incredible. great price and quality. god bless the U.S. I just cleared some space on my board for this. Very impressed. please help me w/ the bypass/buffered question if any one knows.

Very easy to get great fuzz tones out this because of just two knobs and a switch, knobs control amount of fuzz and switch allows the circuit to cascade into one another! it apears to be a unity level but increase the fuzz and volume goes up to, can get very loud! I thought the ideal of cascadeing the two fuzzes would be catastophic sounding but it's not that bad, if your used to a big muff this won't scare you a bit! I don't miss a tone knob either, it seems EQed just right for me

Sound Quality : 9
Sound quality is a ten for me, BUT! I plan on using this pedal for one thing and one thing only and that is slide guitar! Lap steel and conventional guitars in open tuning, this can go pretty much in front of any amp and give you that big muff sound that is so expressive for slide work very organic tones for that, I used to have a little muff that I loved much more than the big muff and I read that this is basically a reissue of that with the added feature of the cascading cicuit, I get exactly the fuzz tone I need with this unit, a strat in open D and you get BAD MOTOR SCOOTER tone spot on with a little english on the slide the break up on the decay is priceless! as far as setup I'm just using this for slide, usually a Fender blues JR with a 60's Harmony meteor set up for playing on the lap and a couple of open tuned mexican strat's I haven't replaced my Fender lap steel I sold, but I plan on getting a dobro soon that I play all the time at a local store, the harmony is pretty good though. various slides usually heavy glass but depends.

Reliability : 9
I have a Russian bigmuff for backup but the American E/H stuff is a lot better, no slam on Russians but I have a lot of E/H gear both original and reissue Russian and U.S. and all the problems I've encountered have been with the russian stuff in particular two small stone failures, The new American stuff should make you stand up and salute, great sounding great performing gear at a great price made right here! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON! for once in my life alot of my boss gear is mothballed in the closet.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I,ve never delt with them, in the old days radio shack and a solder gun with your buddies hanging over your shoulder was the unofficial customer support for E/H products. NASCAR and I assume E/H have come a long way.

Its impossible to NOT be able to work this thing. There's two modes: Muff 1 and Muff 2. There's two dials. Muff 1 and Muff 2. The dials adjust the gain of each mode. There's a switch and an LCD. that's about it.

Sound Quality : 10
I use a Gibson Les Paul > Maxon OD808RI > EHX Double Muff > Vox Wah > Fender Blues Junior. This thing is great. I like the Muff 1 mode. It has very glassy highs, great mids, and sufficient bass. It REALLY cuts through the mix. Its like a fuzzy overdrive. NOT distortion. Muff 2 has a lot more bass and moderately more gain. Supposedly more than the regular USA muff, but I don't notice too much of a difference at all. I don't really use teh Muff 2. I like overdrive, plus, muff 2 mode doesnt cut through as well, too bassy for my liking, and i just don't need that much gain. I'd be fine if this pedal just had the muff 1 mode. But, i'm sure if i used a single coil guitar, i'd use the muff 2 mode. This sounds just as good (if not better) than my maxon, but gives me a different sound. I love it.

I play rock (like Oasis, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Interpol), blues, jazz, and funk. Mostly all fused together. If it were stolen, i'd DEFINITELY get another one. I got this one on sale (the local store had all effects 40% off the retail price) and I love it. Its hard to find great natural sounding overdrive/fuzz pedals that are versatile, inexpensive, and that can cut through the mix. I can't stand not being able to hear myself. Out of all the distortion pedals I've had, this and the Maxon are the best. And here's a list of most of the dist/od/fuzz pedals i've had before:

Boss Super Overdrive
Boss Blues Driver
Boss Metal Zone
Boss DS-1
MXR Distortion +
EHX Big Muff Pi
EHX USA Big Muff Pi
Fulltone Distortion Pro
Fulltone Soul Bender
Danelectro Fab Tone
Ibanez Smashbox

So, its not like I don't have any clue on what I'm talking about. I love the clarity, yet the nastiness of it. I also love the simplicity. I walked in the store and had NO clue as to what I was going to get. I saw it for the first time, checked it out, and took it home. Its focking great, especially since it was SO inexpensive. I don't suggest it for metal, but if you want an overdrive with some fuzz, or moderate gain fuzz distortion, I'd check this out. Also check out the USA Big Muff.

I use the Double Muff with an Ernie Ball Stingray Bass and a Fender Precision loaded with a Dimarzio Model P and 1968 Gibson EBO Pickup into a Gallien Krueger 400RB-III stack. The Double muff can get a tad noisy with active pickups, but they always sound great regardless. The Double Muff is the perfect medium between the American Reissue and the Sovtek Big Muffs.

Electro-Harmonix' customer service is my only complaint, their website is lacking and their staff is less than knowledgable. After recieving an email about the Double Muff and a few new units, I called and they weren't sure about release dates, or whether or not they could get me a smaller tshirt. After putting me on hold, they returned only to refer me to their website. Though I hear their repair guys are quick and knowledgable.

Recieved mine in the mail today and I guess the resaler was as anxious to try it as I was. He popped open the ceramic disc and tried out my pedal for a bit, I didn't mind the footpring but opening the box for the first time is Oh, so much fun!

I plugged it in right away, both dials vertical and in single mode I punched in and my bass goes from clean to a nice, smooth almost fuzz, rather subtle, but lovely. I crank the gain a bit and it gets a bit clankier but still a slightly timid fuzz. I love it! Flip the switch to double, and the two faced beast goes from timid little schoolgirl to all out, in-your-face fuzz! Much harsher than the American reissue in tone, but warmer than the Sovteks, a perfect medium! It's very in your face, but still much clearer than it's Big Muff brotheren, as the treble pushes through, but so does the bass! It's chunky and still manages to let through a nice bassy tone!

But of course, the usual gripes with Electro Harmonix pedals...they're a tad noisy with active electronics and they have 1/8" 9V adapters. Other than that, I can't say a word, and who can argue with something they call a muff!

Long story short: Five out of five jumpy guys, great name, great sound, great pedal. Let's just not turn this into the OD250 and have everyone running out and buying one 'cause I love 'em.
