I dont really know how to describe the sound of the device itself but it gives a "clean" signal boost
I say "clean" because I mainly use it to *** crunch to my tube bass amp wich is one of it's usual use

Ok if you need a boost pedal that is it. Simple, no so expensive considering other options but it only a boost pedal.
It can give good crunch out of some lower gain amp but I advice to try it first because not all amps have a good overdrive with boost pedal

I use de EHX LPB1 as a clean boost. This pedal is the last pedal in my pedalboard. If you place it as the first pedal, than it sounds more like an overdrive pedal. But when placed as the last pedal in your effects chain it is a clean boost. Turn the knob between 9 an 10 o clock when you use it to pull up the volume for your solo's. It is not completely a clean boost, because it gives a coloured sound in the middle frequencies. But this coloured sound is very warm and ideal for getting a great sound for your guitar solo's.

I play rock and hardrock. If this pedal would be stolen, then I would buy the same pedal again.
Before I got this pedal, I used tubescreamers and other overdrive pedals to boost my sound. This pedal gives me a sound that is very much like the sound of my rhythm guitar (which is great), but it is very much louder than my rhythm sound, so it is gresat for solo's.

Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 (nano version)
well what can i say?. it has one knob (level control) a red l.e.d. and a footswitch to turn the unit on and off.
you will have to get your phillips head screwdriver out if you want to change batteries, no big deal right?
while i love this pedal, it seems that there is a HUGE BASS BOOST that ends up getting bigger as you rotate the boost knob clockwise.
this just might be great, if you play a strat or any other guitar with single coil pickups, looking for a gain boost while adding some beefier low end to your guitar sound.
you can use this beast in an fx loop too, especially if you want to add some more low end chunk, and quite possibly to get your tube amp(if you got one) power tubes to distort more. seems like it makes you sound here WAY LOUDER if you want by increaseing the boost knob.
as for me, i just had to tinker with the capacitors inside.
there are three .1 (100 volt) caps in there that control the tone of this puppy. i changed all three to .01 (50 volt) caps, i guess its ok because we are only using a 9 volt battery, but anyways they are smaller ones for a nice cutting sound, sounds like a treble booster i guess and kinda like putting an eq BEFORE the amps input. anybody whos anybody like eddie vanhalen to kerry king get their sound like that using a half cocked wah, eq, or something before the amp.

im using a san dimas type guitar made from african mahogany, that i had bought from Mitch, at KNEguitars.com with an EMG in the bridge.
then it goes to the LPB-1 and then to the input of my Peavey Windsor.
From there i go in through the FX loop with a Behringer EQ. I need to get a noise reduction pedal, maybe a Decimator. but finally goes through my crate blue voodoo cab.
the pedal does get noisy, but doesnt anything when you boost gain?
the pedal does sound really good, and especially to me AFTER i did the mod.

i would say that it is a reliable unit, they dont cost much at all, i picked mine up used at the local music store for 30 bucks so...
id gig without it, but i hate to mess with an EQ, especially two of them. get one, do the mod (if you want) and forget about setting pre distortion EQ pedals forever! set it and forget it, LOL

if it were lost or stolen id be pissed! but id definatley get another one, or maybe build one myself.
i like the fact that it only has one knob, and i dont have to mess with anything else to get the sound i want.
i think it would be cool if they had a rotary knob on it so you could get different tones out of it without haveing to modify it yourself.

I use this with an LTD EC-50 (with a bill lawrence xl in the bridge, and a 70's super distortion in the neck), Electro Harmonix Metal Muff, and a Marshall MG-100.
Guitar to LPB, to distortion, to amp.
Heavy-*** ****.
Adds a ton of gain, and seems to chunk up the bottom a lot.
Nice and ballsy.
Helps me with feedback, as well.
Only reason this gets a 5, is because it's REALLY noisy. It's also from the 70's, and was purchased for $0.25

I use this to boost my OD pedals (I am using an MXR Distortion +, a DOD YJM308 and a Boss SD 1 Japan model).
This is not a totally clean boost, it adds some mids and gain at the same time, which is great for me, especially on the OD pedals that dont have a tone control.
I usually have my pedals set to minimum drive as a rhythm sound, and use the LPB-1 as a solo boost and to add more gain. It has more hair than Tom Selleck's mo!
One thing i dont like is using this in front of my amp (Fender Hot Rod Deluxe) as a boost between my guitar and amp (i.e. without any pedals on). This makes the amp sound farty, which is not my cup of tea..

I've played this thing through my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and now my current amp of Blue Jr. Vintage edition with the Jensen vintage speaker..also run this thing through a church PA system. Guitar used is a Epiphone Dot with the stock humbuckers. This thing is really sweet, especially through my tube amps, no coloration that i've noticed so far and i'm pretty particular and quiet as a mouse. With the amps i use it to push the tubes into distortion, sometimes sounds better than using my TS808 depending on the settings and definitely better than tinkering with the master volume and volume dials on my Blues Jr. For the church PA system the sound guys tend to make me quieter than they should :) so... set up all my other effects and play in the mix a bit and during a practice song i'll punch this guy on and set it to a level that i deem as decent and then turn it back off...save if to push on during service where they aren't paying enough attention to turn me down. Works like a charm everytime, there's no loud click or lurge in volume or change in anything, i'll just get a little louder between a few notes.
8 just because i'm not sure if it colors or drops tone at all, i haven't tested that to my satisfaction

When I started playing (back in the late '60s), the LPB-1 was hands-down my all-time favorite box. I'm thrilled they're making them again, and they seem to work just as well as the originals. Tell you what . . . if you've ever seen the old black-and-white Band of Gypsies video, look real carefully at Jimi's Marshalls . . . they all have LPB-1s plugged into them. 'Nuff said.

I really like the umpf the LPB-1 adds to my set up. Right now I'm playing thru a Lone Star Strat, thru the effects loop with a Teese Wah,
Boss Graphic Eq, Boss Flanger, Boss Delay, the LPB-1, Marshall Reflector Reverb, and then Boss TU-2 tuner. The LPB-1 was to boost the Marshall pedal, which sucks volume when kicked in. I liked the LPB-1 so much, I leave it on all the time, so now I need another LPB to re-boost the Marshall when kicked on. I love the LPB-1. It's brought me 1 step closer to my tone quest fulfillment.

This review is referring to the "Nano" reissue of this pedal.
There's one knob and a footswitch. You turn the knob to set how much of a boost you want, this pedal is truly idiot proof.
Sound Quality
:

I bought this pedal for one reason, and that was to use it as a boost for my USA Big Muff. I build my own tube amps, and I design them to be capable of all the distortion I need without a booster pedal. I do have a '65 Gibson Hawk that I tried this pedal with though and it did sound very good.
One thing you have to understand is that this is not a flat boost. It "fattens" up your sound a little bit. I keep the "sustain" knob on my Big Muff fairly low for rhythm and use this pedal in front of it when I need a little something extra for solos. It works very well for this. Another thing that's worth noting is that this pedal is indeed true bypass.
I play a solid maple 1980 Gibson 335-S which is typically tuned down to C standard these days, as well as a heavily modified strat copy. This pedal works well with both, and sounds pretty good with the low output pickups in my Strat. This pedal did not seem to add any noise to the sound. The previous reviewer's unit must have a ground issue.
Reliability
:
8
It seems like a pretty robust pedal. I have not had it that long but I was impressed by the quality of the case, it seems sturdier than my Muff to be honest. I'd say it's probably going to last me a long time, and I would probably gig without a backup, although these are cheap enough that a backup might not hurt in any case.

I play everything from blues to classic rock to "stoner rock" (which is where the Muff comes in handy :) ) This is a boost pedal, it's suitable for whatever kind of music you think you need a boost pedal for.
I've been playing a year and a half, but I have always been a tone freak since a couple months into my playing. I'm typically not happy with anything out there, which is why I started building my own amps. If this pedal were stolen I'd eventually get another one, it's not like my tone depends solely on this pedal and most of the time I just go straight from the guitar into the amp, but this pedal is nice to have.
It's a good solid boost, it does change your tone, but from what I can tell it's in a good way. There's nothing really bad about this pedal, it's really simple and either you like what it does, or you don't. I do also really like that it's true bypass.
I did spend a little time shopping around, but this is one of the simplest pedals ever created and EHX is a pretty good brand in general so I'm sure I made the right call getting this pedal for what I was going to use it for. It has everything I want in a boost pedal - a knob and a switch.
Overall, it's cheap, it's simple, it's small, and if you're just looking for a boost pedal to drive an amp or pedal harder, or fatten up your sound, you really can't do much better than this, especially for the price.

Reissue Nano EH Linear Power Booster pedal. It does everything one would want in a power booster or microamp. The all-metal LPB-1 has one boost knob, one LED light, and one metal switch. That???s it.

I bought the LPB-1 to replace the Digitech Bad Monkey overdrive pedal I was using to boost my tube amp to extra distortion during leads. The good news is that the EH LPB-1 is much more tonally transparent than the BM. The bad news is that the LPB-1 is much noisier. Actually, the LPB-1 added noticeable hum to my sound ??? regardless of whether the unit was switched on or off. The weird thing is that the hum would go away whenever I touched the pedal. Thus, I assume that it???s some sort of ground issue. The unit hummed with both the included battery and a Visual Sound power adapter.
The LPB-1 also sounded a bit harsh on treble notes. I ended up re-selling the LPB-1 on eBay and kept the BM. Even though the BM is midrangy, it doesn???t add hum or harshness like the LPB-1.
Reliability
:

I didn???t like the way the unit was constructed, which is surprising considering it???s a made in the USA. My LPB-1 didn???t sit flat on the floor. The unit is light enough to be moved easily when switched on. Speaking of the switch, it didn???t seem as solid as the metal switches on some of the other Chinese pedals I own.

The LPB-1 is a disappointment. I was considering buying the EH Nano Small Stone phaser. After this pedal, I decided to pass on the other EH Nano Series pedals. While the Chinese made BM is the same price as the LPB-1, it???s smoother sounding, less noisy, and more versatile.

I'm going to compare this to an MXR Micro-Amp and a ZVEX Super Hard On, as i'd guess you'd be reading this thinking of it as either a clean boost or an overdrive. (1) This pedal is definately NOT a clean boost. If you're looking for that, you will want a Micro-Amp. However, the microamp will not drive an amp like this pedal (or the Super Hard On) will. For a clean boost, look elsewhere. (2) This pedal is a straight up overdrive, very similar to the Super Hard On. When used before a loud quality tube amp either clean or overdriven, this pedal is great. Sounds virtually identical to a Super Hard On. Through a quiet tube amp or any solid state amp, this pedal add much more treble compared to the Super Hard On. It's not terrible, but it does sound more brittle than a Super Hard On. So, if that is worth the insane price difference to you, and you're obviously rich, go for the Super Hard On. But here is the SURPRISE, (3) if you use this to goose another distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedal (before that pedal in the chain), this pedal destroys both the Super Hard On and the Micro Amp. Absolutely no tone change whatsoever from your main pedal, the Line Booster just sends that thing into hyperdrive.

For the price, this is a GREAT pedal. It's not a clean boost, so i cant compare it to a clean boost. Compared to a ZVEX Super Hard On, it sounds identical through a cranked tube amp. Using it to goose another OD/DIST/Fuzz pedal it is AWESOME. Destroys the Super Hard On for that. No question, the Super Hard On sounds warmer on low volume tube amps and any solid state amp.....so my advice is decide what you'd want to use this pedal for and if the price difference is worth it for you.

This review is of the recently released Nano model of the LPB-1. Very easy to use. One knob controls boost level. There are no other controls. The LPB-1 is true-bypass and includes a handy AC input. There is a one page "manual" included in the box, but it doesn't say much.

Adds heft and grit to whatever you put into it. Excellent in front of your favorite overdrive or fuzz, almost as if you now have two "dirty" channels on your amp. I'm not going to go into my gear as you can use the LPB-1 with pretty much any setup. Not noisy, maybe a little hiss when you dime it, but nothing surprising or unreasonable. This essentially just boosts the signal coming out of your guitar. Sounds like it probably adds some mids along the way, too. You can set it to be subtle or substantial -- sounds great either way! I let the lead guitar player in my band borrow the LPB-1 and he offered to buy it from me less than 30 seconds later. Now we both have one.

I haven't had it long, but the LPB-1 is a *very* simple circuit housed in a sturdy box. I suppose the footswitch could fail at some point, but it feels pretty solid at the moment, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. I am currently using it without a backup, although I have a handful of other overdrived, distortions and fuzzes, so I could get through if it went out on me.

I play punk-inspired rock music. This is a good match. I have been playing for about 13 years now. If it were stolen or lost, I'd probably get another one, especially at the reissue price! I've played a million (maybe less) distortion and overdrive pedals. The LPB-1 is just different enough to justify keeping around -- plus, it makes your other pedals (and your amp) a lot more versatile once you learn to set them anticipating the boost for "bigger" or "heavier" passages. If you've been looking at Micro-Amps or more expensive clean boosts, but you like a little extra grit, you may want to give this inexpensive little box a try.

This pedal is 100% better than the first LPB-1 I bought in 1974. It is quieter and can sit on the floor rather than plugging in to the guitar or amp input. It says made in NYC. (So was the first one) The LPB-1 is a clean boost. No distortion. It will fatten up the guitar for lead without fuzzing it out. I am currently using a 1980's Jap copy strat into a Tokai overdrive pedal into the LPB-1 into a 1973 Marshall JMP 50w with an 8x10 Marshall cab. I can dial up the distortion on the Tokai and boost the same distortion for lead. This pedal makes life simpler when you have a non channel switching amp like mine.

I aquired my recent Marshall to replace the one I bought and sold in 1979. I will hold on to this one. What I like about the LPB-1 is it is a simple clean boost. No frills easy to use. I'm using this to allow my ancient single channel AC30 more easily achieve valve(tube) overdrive at a range of volumes and this does this admirably. There is no real colouration of my guitars tone and it has inmproved the amp's response to single coil pick-ups considerably. My Pro 56 Danelectro re-issue absolutley loves it!
The real trick is to use it to help manage the relationship between the guitar signal and you amp so that you can better control the point when your amp begins to "clip" and then rolls into full distortion and this may take a bit of playing with (which is half the joy of stomp boxes). Essentailly you get out what you put in, only more of it.

I've been using treble boosters for a while which work very well but aren't very suited to getting a good quality "everyday" tone. I have also found that Distortion pedals give you lot's of control but you sound like that pedal, not YOUR kit. This pedal offers a very decent clean boost at a reasonable price (I paid ??34 for it) and seems ideal for the intermediate Valve amp player.

I first bought an LPB-1 out of a Rolling Stone Magazine in 1972.
Ever since I had used them. On Fenders, and Vox amps mostly.
One the AC30 TB I use it for solos, and it just adds to what is already there...in the AC30 case it gives the amp that extra power for the Brian May sounds...I just turn the amp up to say 1/2 way and use the LPB-1...For younger folks out there, there was an LPB-2.
All the solos on our album "Feet Of Clay", that was distributed through Sony in 1995 had this little wounder on it...I highly recomend it...I was not aware that it is still for sale...We tore one apart and "cloned" them around 1980, for session work...I did some sessions with a drummer named "Sticks" that did some gigs with Hendrix, and he said that Hendrix had one of these on his Marshalls.
They are amazing....Ralph Bruner

Try with older amps like AC30's or older Marshalls that have no master volume, or seperate gain controll...It just adds what is already there,,not really a fuzz effect, but just power...you can keep the amp volume down and bring the LPB-1 up to about 3/4..
This thing will give you a great Brian May sound when used with an AC30...mine is a 1965 year...Marshalls give you a Jimy Page sort of lead sound if used in Marshalls...If you turn the guitar volume down it gets clean just like the amps of the old days if you have an amp from the old days,,,sown for clean...up full for leads...it makes it simple....echo and all FX's sound the same really..
I have 2 from 1972 and they still work....But get extra 9 volt clips and be ready to install them since {one mine anyway} the wires are really weak...I also thing this unit was one if not the earliest products they made aside from the Big Muff...

I get an `73 fender stratocaster through the cry-baby gcb-95 wah, eh lpb-1, coloursound overdriver, an homebrew fuzztone, univibe and a dod analog delay, all connected to an fender twin reverb. I play mostly late '60s hard rock (mounatin, blue cheer) and psychedelic stuff (early pink floyd, iron butterfly, etc). I use the lpb-1 as a line driver for my effects chain or as a clean or lead boost. The lpb-1 sounds very fat and bright without much noise. Cool!

i am using a ceramic pickup on a cello through a 1971 100 watt fender super bassman into a electro voice PA cab with a 12 and a horn this thing gives a good boost and it is extremely helpful because i have it attached to the cello wich makes it so i can change volume without getting up to the amp.

Very cool little unit... It only has one know and an on and off swith. You have to take it apart to put the battery in it and it has no input for an AC adapter. Considering that it only does one thing, the old Electro Harmonix company did not even make any efforts (so it seems) to make the crude on/off switch more quiet. As fas as its use of use, it is very easy to dial in the amount of boost you want. It is a very cool no BS unit. I give it an 8 just because the on/off switch is a little noisy and because you have to practically disassemble it to put the battery in. If it did not sound good, It would not have an 8 but it kicks the butt off even a MXR Micro Amp!

Since there is not a lot that can go wrong with it at all.. I give it a ten. In the 20-25+ years it has been around, it has not needed to be fixed. Although I am not the original owner, I can tell that no soldering or adjustment have been made. The cover has only been removed to replace the battery (which lasts a pretty long time unlike new pedals I might add)

The Old Electro Harmonix company is no more.... :( If you had to fix it, it would be because you ran it over with a steam roller or let some drunk at a gig spill beer on it. Since they are not around anymore I will leave no number rating. You should not have problems...

I play Jazz, Funk, Blues, Latin, R&B, you name it.. This little unit (I cannot call it a pedal because it is just a little bitty thing that plugs into the top of your amp or into another pedal on the floor) is ont neat little piece of equipment. My setup (those of you who have read my LPB-2 review may have seen a different one) as of now is:
Vantage ES335 hollowbody--> Alesis Midiverb 2--> Left stereo field: 1966 Vox Pacemaker... Right Stereo Field: Fender Deville (4x10). The effects before the Midiverb are: Ernie Ball Mono Volume, Boss DD3, Boss Chorus, EH LPB-2, T.C. Line Booster/Distortion, EH Dr. Q, then the LPB-1 driving the single stereo input of the midiverb... If my little unit were stolen I would probably buy another LPB-2 (because I like being able to change it with my foot) I like the sound of two of these units. Although I say that I would buy a LPB-2, note that the LPB-1 has a slighty different sounds than the LPB-2. In my opinion, it is a little more subtle and quiter than the LPB-2. The LPB-2 is good for sustain/compression-like boosts, and the LPB-1 is good for chunky solos that sound nice and fat. Overall, both units give you a nice fat sustain (especially if you are primarily a Strat player like me)

I have two LPB1s- one with two female plugs and one with a male plug that plugs into the amp. Both sound awesome.
I have no need to get the sounds of my favorite artists. I'm more about sounding like me. Though some of my favorite guitarists are Glenn Phillips, Henry Kaiser, Curt Kirkwood, Paul Leary, Paul Gilbert.

My favorite feature about the LPB1 is that the simple fact of owning one makes you cool. I have two.

Can not get much easier to use. One input, out output, one vol./gain knob and one batt. on/off switch. I do not think that Electro Harmonix ever put out a manual for this product at any time. If they did, it would have to be a very brief one indeed.

I think this is a very toneful, excellent signal booster. If used before effects (analog delay etc.) the white noise level is very low even when cranked. If plugged direct into the amp, the vol. knob should be set lower. My impression of this excellent product is, that it colors the signal very little. Some complain of "low freq. impact" etc. but I have not found that to be true. It lets the tone of the guitar stay the same, but just boosted. I run mine full out, but first in the signal chain to keep the noise down.

There is not a lot to go wrong with this excellent product. I did have one failure, but it was just the neg. wire from the battery. The neg. leg of the batt. is connected to the back of the pot. A few seconds with a soldering iron, and I was back in business.

I used mine with a Gibson SG and various amps. Traynors gave the best sound with the LPB-1, and I kept blowing speakers out of the Fenders when I used them. You could get a real nasty overdrive if you plugged 2 LPB-1s back to back then hit the amp with them, but you had best have very heavy duty speakers..... and if you turn the gain on the first one up too high you will fry the 2nd one....

Currently I own 20 different guitars (various makes) a 1968 Traynor, a 1972 Peavey Classic, and an epiphone that I don't remember buying... If I could find an LPB1 again I would buy at least 2. I do wish it had some felt along the side with the male plug, to help protect the finish on whatever you plug them into.

This unit doesn't really do anything by itself per se. There's a single knob for volume and an on/off slider switch, that's all. What it does is simply boost you output from your guitar or boost the signal going into the amp, as if you had super high output pickups If you use two units you can set one with the volume all the way up and the secomd volume anywhere and the first one will overdrive the second creating a slight overdrive. If you run into a clean amp you will only get louder, if you use an overdriven amp you increase gain.
Sound Quality
:
8
It is a tad bit noisy when the volume knob is all the way up but it's not any greater than an overdrive or distortion pedal. It's actually slightly less noisy than my Ibanez TS-9. I use my unit with a Jazzmaster or Tele into a Fender Blues Deluxe with the drive control maxed and the LPB volume all the way up and it turns the B.Dlx into a high gain amp. Probably very similar to what the Hot Rod Deluxe sounds like. I compared it directly with the TS-9 which has been modded to TS-808 specs with the gain all the way up on both and they sounded very similar. I am considering in fact getting the LPB-2 which is the pedal version and using it in place of the TS-9 since I can make the LPB have true bypass where with the TS-9 I cannot, and the TS-9 adds a bit of noise to my signal.
Reliability

What's not to depend on? A single transistor, a couple of a caps, a few resistors, a switch, a pot and two jacks. It doesn't get simpler than that. And all the components are handwired without a circuit board. I'd probably take a few backups since their usually so cheap I can afford to buy a few more just to have them.

I emailed Sovtek asking to buy knobs for my Big Muff and they wouldn't sell them to me. The original EH went out of business in 84 but Sovtek claims they will repair the original effects if possible. The LPB is so cheap that it would be easier to buy a new one than to get it reapired by them.

I would buy it again, actually I probably will buy an LPB-2. Actually I traded an autographed Mudhoney flyer for it, and since I don't like Mudhoney all that much I'd say I made out pretty well. It even had the box with it. Pure simplicity but a great unit in my opinion.

The LPB-1 was sold a way to make your guitar "ten times louder". Well, what it really does is boost your signal going into your amp; that means more distortion, mostly. I've used it as a volume booster with instruments that have weak pickup output (Daneclectros, for instance). It's the first EH effect to be marketed and so has some historical significance but it's hardly a must-have effect.
