As with any powerful product, the more 'powerful' the product -- the longer the learning curve (i.e., hours with your nose jammed in a lengthy manual).
The AW-16G is a great sounding, powerful unit. With minimal peripherals (I use a single channel Grace Mic pre, and high end cables & mics), you can sound very good right out of the gate.
Can't speak to editing functions yet, as I'm working my way through tracking and rough-mix functions.
The manual is fairly comprehensive, but I STRONGLY recommend spending some time watching the accompanying 'intro to the AW-16G' DVD prior to powering up the unit. This unit does so many different things that, unless you're a pro-level engineer already, you'll need at least 20-40 hours to get moderately well acquainted with it. Once you do, you'll be able to create very professional sounding recordings.
Not sure of my firmware level, but Yamaha has a long, well-earned reputation for supporting their products well. My one call to their tech support (Tel # can be found at www.yamaha.com) got my question answered immediately.

Top-notch sound, period. Effects and mastering functions allow for pristine mixes. Thus far, I've recorded Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, lead and backing vocals, and I'm very impressed. Compression, reverb, and EQ are all great.

What else needs to be said -- it's a 'Yamaha'. They've always built rugged, dependable gear. This unit ships with it's own padded carry bag for superb portability.

As mentioned above, I've only had to contact Yamaha tech support once, and they resolved my issue on the spot.

I'm a songwriter with years of studio and home recording experience. I am NOT a pro engineer, nor do I desire to be one. My material is in the Adult Contemporary genre -- touches of Henley, Steely Dan, Sting, among others. I already own a Mackie 24 track recorder with a Mackie 8-bus board, but I wanted a portable unit that would allow significant multi-track recording, with high-end results for demo work. In addition to the AW-16G, I researched Foxtex, Tascam, Roland, and Zoom workstations, and finally decided on the Yamaha for the following reasons: Price, reliability, sound quality, and powerful feature set.
It is NOT an easy unit to learn quickly. The interface is moderately complicated, with many pages of display functions, and manual controls. So, prepare to invest some time learning to use all the functions this unit offers. Once you do, you'll be well rewarded.

Very Easy, just connect it, turn the gain to the level of your choice and ---- listen. Of course, the weight of the monitors is high but this will give a good foundation for your sound.

Top Quality Sound --- not that typical stereo sound but showing to you all good and bad things (sound) of your song within the total frequency range. After I used to mix my songs on a Yamaha AW 16G-CD (very powerfull tool!) using headphones only (AKG 271 -- very good for mixing!! -- only the bass is of course not that real sound that you can hear from an "open box", but very close to reality!) i wondered, which frequencies suddenly were shown by the Event TR-8 and which really highlighted some really weak points of my songs. Further i wondered, how close the sound of AKG was to be comparable to the sound of the Event TR-8 monitors --- the "switch from headphones to Monitors" has been made easy to me by this! TR-8 have also a very powerful but truth bass sound. I really like the boxes and their linear sound! It is also well working on a low gain level, which does allow long mixing sessions without losing "listening-fun" I am happy, that i bought them. (sorry for my bad english)

Just bought them but they appear very reliable and in germany we say "unkaputtbar" which means more or less "not to be destroyable". Very high Quality Level. Original packaging for post office transport is very useful.

Top Monitors!! Very truth!! Recommendable!! I would buy them again!!
Just try to compare them with the A.D.A.M. PA11 (Really good or best Monitor, little bit better than Event TR-8, basically in high frequencies) but do not forget to compare the price!!! For low budget professionals i can recommend the Event TR-8 very much!!!
