First the good news. You can use this legendary studio effects unit in a mono guitar effects loop and with stellar results. However, be prepared for very disappointing results if you do not give it EVERYTHING it needs to work properly in a guitar rig. Cabling is the easy part. Eventide gives you instructions to make quarter inch phono to XLR-balanced adapter cables. I won???t repeat their instructions, but make sure you follow them exactly. Although it has internal jumpers to accommodate -10 dB line levels, it should ideally see the much stronger Pro Audio +4db standard which I think is roughly 2.3 volts or so and it sounds much better that way.

I???ll address the biggest reason you may get disappointing results in a guitar rig first: Unless I am mistaken, input attenuation is unfortunately done in the digital domain and badly. Attenuation of even a couple dB results in a major reduction in resolution and sound quality. The solution is to leave the inputs levels set at zero (no boost or cut) and feed it the EXACT proper signal levels. This means your effects loop or preceding effect must have variable sends. The stock loop in my Marshall 1987x was switchable only between +4 or -10db levels and just my luck, it overloaded the unit at +4 and was too weak at -10, yes with the jumpers properly set inside the Eventide. So I ripped out the stock loop and installed a sweet tube driven loop with variable inputs and outputs thanks to Lee Jackson who sells a nice kit online. For the hassle I was rewarded with a huge jump in sound quality thanks to perfect signal levels, a pile of tone squashing junk out of the signal path and miles of clean tube headroom. Your D/SX is also very finicky about input levels, absolutely do not let your input signals go into the red.

Next: Unlike typical guitar stereo effects you cannot just plug into one input and have it convert itself internally to mono. Most of the patches are true stereo only and will not do what they are supposed to with half the algorithm missing! Therefore you need to trick your D/SX into thinking it is running in stereo. Eventide tells you to run a Y cord into the inputs and run it into a rack mixer which will work but if you are guitar tone purist go ahead and use a mixer and kiss your pure tone goodbye. If you care, here???s an alternative: Build a special Y cord for the outputs with a 900 ohm or so resistor in series with each (left and right) signal wire coming into the phono plug back to your amp. DO NOT USE A Y CORD FOR THE OUTPUTS WITHOUT THESE RESISTORS OR THE OUTPUTS WILL TRY TO FEED BACK INTO EACH OTHER! Given the low output impedance of this unit, this 900 plus 900 ohm trick is sufficient to keep the unit???s outputs happy. You can use a Y cord for the inputs but I prefer to run a Y cord to my stereo Rocktron Hush and send two independently buffered outputs from the Hush to my Eventide. Thus my Hush doubles as a perfect buffered splitter with no additional sonic penalty since it is already in my signal path. I give it semi good marks for ease of use programing. You have to do things differently here in Eventide land re saving patches etc, but all in all I get around in it just fine. If this was ever adverstised towards guitar players I would have to give it poor marks. Thus I am not sure how to rate this category.

You can bet the vast majority of your favorite recordings since the 80s passed through an Eventide at some point so you are in good company with this fantistic unit on your side. Sonically, I could gush for pages, but I???ll try to control myself. For a reality check I take my loop in and out with a pull pot on my amp and always break out in a nice smug smile at how clean this thing is to my direct guitar tone. The effected tone is of course affected, and yes, you could say ???digital??? sounding but we???re talking huge, lush, Rolls Royce digital. The delays are so thick and powerful, while reverbs are complex and overall just so awesomely professional sounding. I only use pitch shifting for subtle enhancement of some delays for that bigger than life guitar sound.

I???ve been through all the typical lower line guitar processors and their delays all sounded like a miserable thin whining sound compared to my Eventide. And don???t get me started on their lifeless cheesy reverbs, putrid pitch performance, feeble output drives, glassy or ugly grainy colorations etc. A million dollar guitar sound is what I get with my Eventide. The sounds of all my favorite guitar heroes are all here. I get the great 80???s super produced voice of God guitar sounds ala Warren DiMartini and of course Vai with patches like ???Float??? while ???Dolphin Talk??? makes great Hendrix backwards echo approved sounds too. Did I mention it does a wonderful analogue tape delay sound too? Want to replicate the distant miked room guitar sound in Deep Purple???s Machine Head tracks? No problem! Editing patches is intuitive to a point, but there are deep editing capabilities that you will need to master if you???re trying create a particular sound you may have in your head. Don???t even think of owning and using an Eventide without the manual. Each patch comes stock mixed 100% wet and you will want them between only 10 to 25% wet.

In fairness one comparison has to be made. Eventide???s only peer then and now was the out-of-this-world TC Electronics 2290 which I also used to own and regretfully sold. If you want crystal clear delays that are almost perfect mirror images of the direct signal even when mixed nearly 100% wet, get a 2290, Eventide cannot compete. But again, I emphasize the coloring the Eventide does impart is regal and full of character, not in any way ugly or cheesy sounding. And of course, the H-3000???s offer vastly more sonic possibilities.

Other minor issues: I was thrilled that this unit has delay ducking which is such a musically useful feature. However, sometimes I think the ducking feature slightly craps up my direct tone by causing some sort of phase related side effects. If anyone has some thoughts on this please share them with me. All in all I would probably give it a 9.9 for sound quality.

The transformer in mine hums a bit which vibrates the chassis and is audible from perhaps 8 feet away in a dead quiet room. Eventide offered to replace it with a quieter one for a charge but I haven???t bothered yet.

Occasionally mine would freeze up or not switch presents properly. I suspected low voltage problems here in my house, bought a Tripp Lite rack mount voltage regulator and I haven???t had a problem since. Indictors on the power supply confirmed that I was indeed experiencing very low voltages periodically during the summer here in San Diego. Perhaps Eventides are more sensitive to low line voltage than other processors. If yours is misbehaving this might be the reason.

Taking the top off this unit I almost fell over backwards at the sight of the entire unit packed from wall to wall with computer chips as well as a supply transformer the size of the output transformer in 50w tube amp! Shut it off and it still passes a signal thanks to super quality passive relay switching. It uses ols school transformer balanced outputs which I consider the best way to do balanced outputs. That is also the reason why you should NOT short pin2 to pin 1 to unbalance the outputs with cabling as we normally do for balanced to single ended adapter cables. The build quality and engineering that went into these units is mind blowing. Buying these used, you can be comforted to know that most were racked in a studio, not banged around in some meatheads guitar rack and splashed with beer for the previous 10 years.

I have received good support from Italio or what ever his name is. It is a weird experience dealing this company directly. Eventide seems to be a pet project branch of their main forte in Avionics. Behind the veil they are probably a very small company. No matter how many times you call, no human being will ever answer. However, they did get back to me and were nice and helpful. Over the course of several weeks, a few more folks would come out of the woodwork and return calls or e-mails. All in all, I received good support from them. For such an elite company however, their website reads like a ransom note. They sure don't seem to feel they need a polished corporate image!

In summary, my Eventide H-3000 D/SX is my royal suit of armor. Take it away and I???d feel like Darth Vader stripped of his helmet and voice. Joking aside, it passes the ultimate test by inspiring me creatively. I couldn???t do what I do without it. It may be becoming ???vintage??? digital by some measures, but you can bet these units will be as classic as a non master volume Marshall amp and be revered indefinately into the future. You are welcome to e-mail me for clarification of the above at Max at SilverAudio daught com (Good luck with that one e-mail miners). I???m no wiz when it comes to advanced programming however.

Let me start by saying "This thing &^%$@!$ ROCKS"! Ok I got that out of my system. I bought it used on EBay for 1000 bucks and within 10 minutes of getting out of the box and a bit of light browsing of the owners manual and I was up and running and that was with no prior experience. The only thing that I had to figure out and really get a grasp on was that this unit is NOT a multi-fx unit but is in fact a singular FX unit. However the effects or "parameters" you dial up are extremely customizable, so if you choose a delay algorithm like Ultra-Tap or Multi-shift it acts as one effect but unlike you average stomp box with two or three parameters you can tweak 20+ parameters and really bend the effect to what ever you are looking for.

This device was designed to work in stereo and as such I found an awesome compliment for it with the Line 6 PODxt PRO. I am using the POD as my pre-amp and I am connecting the Eventide to it via the POD's stereo FX Loop. With the POD I am using the FVB Shortboard which has a pedal for FX Loop that when pushed blends in the Eventide as though it was one of the POD?s own onboard FX. I then run the POD left and right out stright to the stereo power amp on my Roland JC120 and use the POD as the pre-amp (since it excels at that). To get around the 1-2 second loading latency issue that occurs switching between patches, I load the Eventide on the first patch for the song that is to feature Eventide. If that patch is not going to use Eventide but the next one will then I leave the FX loop off on the POD this set up the Eventide so that the next subsequent patch on the POD that will have FX loop on will already have Eventide waiting and loaded. Eventide leaves the first 100 midi patches open and they synch directly to the POD, infact all I need is one midi cable out from the POD and in to the Eventide and really I have yet to need to do any deep midi editing on either.

I did have it go down the other day where it would not fully power on and was failing to post, but I sent an email to Eventide late in the day on Friday and belive it or not I had an answer within 10 minutes. I work on computers for a living and that is all an Eventide really is, just an older model PC (sort of) so I just unplugged it, opened it up and reseated the pins on the power switch which with age had oxadize a bit, blew it out with some canned air, closed the case and problem solved, good as new. Aside from that for a 10 year old piece of equipment It sounds great infact it sounds better than a lot of the newer stuff thats coming out today. If money were no object I would definitly be looking into an Eventide Eclipse 3.0

this is kinda of an update from my 10/10/02 post. i still love this thing. a year or so ago i shitcanned my rack in lue of my 30th anniv marshall and 2 jcm 800 cabs. i run my universe >bad horsie > boss super overdrive > ts9 > marshall 30th anniv >3000d/sx in the loop series. monster cable NOOOO! wireless.
has any other users had a hard time with getting a good mix w/ longer delays? i really have to boost my output levels to get it close to the short delay levels. the sounds are great the level seems to drop.

OK...I have upgraded D/SX and it sounds incredible. You HAVE to read the manual to use this unit to the fullest. Almost every patch is useable immediately as long as you bring down the mix level. The presets all seem to be set at 100% wet. Editing is as easy as pressing the parameter you want from the front panel parameter screen and adjust it. It is the expert parameters that have some real cool adjustments. GOT TO READ THE MANUAL though. There is a lag time between presets but there are ways around that.

What can you say about eventide, they are known as the best and for good reason. I run a Boogie 395 power amp into a Boogie Quad preamp into a Boogie Recto preamp and then into the Eventide then into a TC 2290 and then into a TC G-Force. This is all looped into a Rocktron Patchmate and controlled by a Lexicon R1 controller. It sounds incredible. No noise and if you want a specific sound, you can get it.
Reverbs, Delays, Chorus', Flangers and Pitch shifting are all intense!! The only thing I dont like are the distortion patches in the mod factory. They dont need them in there and are not great sounding, however, you dont buy one of these for that anyway.

The guys at eventide have been great. It is made like a tank and I havent had any issues with it. It does heat up, so you might want to leave a space above or below it in the rack if possible. I found out after using it in the rack in the studio how much heat they generate after 3 hours!!

I play alot of different styles from Angus to Petrucci. I like doing more Morse and Petrucci stuff though for me. I have been playing over 30 years and have FINALLY gotten the rack I have always wanted. If anything were ever stolen, I would have to kill the idiot who took it. I would replace ALL of the rack if anything should happen. In the past 5 years me and my buddies Frank and Steve have bought just about every type of gear imaginable, from Lexicon MPX1's and G2's to Sansamps and Triple rectos amd marshalls, the list is endless. Suffice to say....an Eventide and a TC piece and your done with effects. It makes you want to play because of the clarity and flexibility. Which is why it is so expensive.

uv777pbk->shure ut wireless->bad horsie wah->rocktron piranah->h3000d/sx->aphex 104 exciter->rocktron velocity 120->asi 4x12 cab.i control it w/ an x15 art .i run my rig mono by y cording the out of the eventide. ive been doing this for years with no prob. the book says not to do it that way, but it works. i use radio shack in line transformers to change the impedance (1/4 in to xlr).
the 3000d/sx is quiet. almost magical. the sound in is the sound out. all the patches are cool. i really could go on all day about it. two complaints. 1) no 1/4 in jacks. life would be much easer w/ them.i think the new orvilles got them. 2)the space between the patches of only dry signal.each algorythem(program) is like its own processer the dry is the next program loading.
people make a huge deal about it. you really can't hear it when you play live unless you go from some really strange preset to a simple reverb or delay. even then i'm sure the average joe wont hear it.

I purchased one recently, and I was SHOCKED to see that you can't go from one preset to the next as quickly as anyother MIDI device (even high end ones from Lexicon). The two second load between programs is just ridiculous for use in a guitar rack. And yes, I read manuals! It didn't say anything about it. VERY DISAPPOINTED.Should have bought a 2290.

This guy, C.J., could barely be bothered to talk to me, and when I mentioned the MIDI switching problem, the excuse was 'you're using 1987 technology, blah, blah'. I had a Alesis Quadraverb that did switching, and it was made in 1992. It was fine. Sure, it didn't have the RAM intensive effects, but for 6 times the price, you would think that they could have come up with a solution.

I upgraded from the H-3000 D/SX to the H-3000 D/SE recently but I feel the need to defend the DS/X from the ravings of fragile children with severe ADD. I read some of these reviews bashing the D/SX and was shocked! I realized afterwards that giving an Eventide to a child who does not how to tie his shoes will yeild such rantings. I keep reading about system lock ups and ram errors and the cold porrige. Then I put it all together. These kids are so impatient they must be spinning the data wheel like a nintendo toy while entering data from the keypad or via midi! Sherlock Holmes step aside. I solved the case of the brainless boy with a bad Eventide. By the way, RTFM that.

Although it may not look like it, it is very easy to use. Editing is quite easy if you've read the manual. You should read it and simultaneously try the things described to get used to it.
I use it in a guitar-amp loop, and of course I have to adjust the mix of wet / dry signal, which is quite easy.

Ok, I'm using it in a typical guitar setup, live and as a session player. I go from the Send of my Mesa Boogie Mark IV to one of the Inputs and from there to 1) back to the return of the Boogie, which now works as the amp for the right effect channel and 2) to teh poweramp of my Rivera 100 Duo Twelve ( left side )
The effects are just great. If you just need some ambience ( some reverb or delay ) you willbe surprised how much it does NOT change the actual guitar sound.
Of course, this unit was meant to be a full studio effect-processor, and as usual you will have to edit the wet/dry-levels, cause i.e. with reverb sounds you will only hear the reverb andnot the actual guitar sound, which you can rectify by setting teh mix of teh reverb to abotu 50% ( or more or less ).
Reverb, delay, and all the other modulation- and time-effects are just great, no doubt about that.
This unit also features the Steve Vai-presets, which range from very useful" to "very weird" ( many weird sounds from "Passion & warfare" and "Slip Of The Tongue" are available here ), and they are just superior.
Many many weird combinations, and strange, synth-like sounds are possible, all in great quality, withoutmuch noise ( I own several noise gates and with just teh Eventide I don't have to use any of them ! ) and without changing the sound ( unless of course you use the synth-like weird effects.
Some effects are not really appropiate for the guitar ( since teh Eventide was made for use in the studio and therefore features many drum- and vocal-presets, which are sometimes interesting wih the guitar, but usually can be ignored ), but with all teh presets ( a few hundred ) there are plenty great sounds, and of course you can always edit your own ones and save them. Room a plenty !

I heard about problems with the RAM, I never had any problems.
One problem though:
With many guitarists who have got an Eventide Harmonizer in their rack, you might have seen TWO units. This is not really for backup-reasons, it is because the preset-changes take some time ( about 2 seconds... you play with one preset, then switch, and while the H3000 loads it goes to "bypass", you hear an unprocessed guitar sound for a sec until teh new preset is ready ), so you might consider that.
I was talking to Steve Morse and Vai's guitartech, and both only have got one H3000 or H4000 with them, because they usually don't have many presetchanges during songs, so they can just load a soudn in between and keep it running. So you gotta decide if you'd need another one to be more flexible and quicker in preset changes.
Otherwise: Since I ahd no problems at all, I give it a 10

Absolutely great support !
Before I got the Eventide I was in preparation for a small tour as a "hired gun" for a major label artists, and I knew I wouldn't have much time between receiving the unit and and the rehearsals.
So I emailed them ( I went to their website, it was kind of hard to find the right email-adress, 3 out of 4 were dead, the last one worked ) and talked to CJ about hooking it up.
He explained thoroughly what was necessary to hook it upp to my mono-setup ( was planned to be mono back then, turned out to be a stereo one now ). I needed a Y-Conenctor to connect both outputs to the amp-return ( see previous reviews ), and cables that would go from 1/4" unbalanced to XLR balanced with a phase switch.
CJ ( the guy from Eventide ) even explained how to solder those cables. I went to Sam Ash though, and they did a great quick job.
During the whole time, CJ answered fast and very patiently and polite.
Great !

I am playing studio sessions in various styles and work as a hired-gun for several artists and bands. I also am preparing for teh recordings of a solo-instrumental album, so I like to be quite versatile.
Due to previous jobs ( and because of upcoming ones and offers, with people looking for professional gear ) I was able to stack up some great sounding, reliable gear ( PRS-, Music Man- and Fender guitars, Boogie-, Rivera- and Marshall-amps, Morley effects etc. ), and when it came to effects I wanted to have one main-rack unt which had to be versatile, good sounding and reliable. I didn't wanna get another 12 unit-rack full of stuff, didn't wanna deal with all the matters of wiring, switching, setups, compatibility.
So I looked around, got some opinions from fellow players and some of my former GIT-colleagues, and checked an awful bunch of units. Finally I picked the H3000D/SX and have been happy since then.
Easy to use, great sounds, every sound under the sun, very inspiring effects, weird stuff as well as classical ambience-effects.
I really like th edelays, chorus-presets, some of the actual diatonic harmonizing, and the great stereo effects.
I compared it to several other units, but none other offered so many effects ( yes, tehre were great pitch shifitng effects, but none combined with so many awesome time- and modulation effects ).
It definitely is a great tool, it has everything I need, and even some more, since some of the effects actually inspired me to write some music. Just last night I was performing with an East Coast Metal band, filling in for their lead guitarist for a night, and during one of their songs ( on teh CD it features a multitracked solo ) I played a very Brian May-inspired solo, using the diatonic pitch shifting.
And one part of my solo spot was playing a slow melody with one of the weirder presets which adds high pitched echoes, so what you get is the original notes and then layers of synthish sounding ( or even flute- and violin-like sounding ) layers...it sounded GREAT, and that wa sjust one of the factory presets.
Of course I could perform without it and still play on my level, but teh Eventide sometimes ( not always ) s the icing on the cake.
A great tool, if you know what you want, and if you don't expect a cover for lack of feel or technique.

I us the H3000DSX in my studio but also use it for guitar and keyboard processing into amps etc. I read with dismay at some peoples
problems when trying to use the unit in mono. This can be acheived in a number of ways, example, use a Y lead to feed both inputs, then take the L+R outputs to two channels of a mini mixer and either pan both channels to the centre or just use one output of your mixer to feed your guitar amp. This way you get the combined L+R output of your H3000. Something like a small Soundcraft works perfectly as they have balanced line inputs. Never use a Y lead to combine both outputs as this can lead to problems. Also it is important to make surs the leads youare using are wired correctly, Unbalanced leads are, pin 1 shield, pin 2- unconected, pin 3 hot or+. Balaced, pin 1 shield, pin 2- cold, pin 3+ hot. It is inmportant to leave pin 2 disconected when using unbalaced. faliure to make these simple checks can lead to problems.

Reliability is OK I have had problems with the
user RAM crashing, so always use a DATA DISK backup, this only happens occassionally, there have been no other problems.

Customer support from Eventide is average. Support from my importer HHB Connunications is excellent.

The H3000DSX is very versatile, the effects are like nothing else,
very unique, I own an H3000DSE also and I would be lost without them, sad person that I am.

As far as I'm concerned this thing is amazing sonically. Someone reckons it glitches, but mine don't! The reverb are v good but the weirder algorithmns are fantastic. I use it in the studio and not as a guitar processor and for that it is excellent.

Good customer support, although I just asked a few setup questions and they responded to e-mail within a day.

As a main reverb I stick to others (EMT, Roland R-880) but as a FX unit it is fantastic and has extremely low noise levels and a lovely sound.
