Fantastic sounds don't usually come easy! So you gotta do some homework - the thing is, you can be constantly tweaking the lo-fi filter. This is no bad thing. Any sound is good on this effect. It might send you mental just finding all the possible combinations that there are though! It is alot of fun to use. Would like to see the dip switches externalised though.

Sound Quality : 10
The quality of any of the massive range of sounds is superb. Absolutely superb! I have mine set so I get an unbelievable singing distortion with rich sustain and a slight sub-octave going on underneath. Really unique - so much so that i've sold all my other distortion effects. I don't know how to compare this sound, nothing like it.

Reliability : 10
If you're lucky (or savvy) enough to have one of these, you'll already be familiar with the innards from experimenting with the dip switches - absolutely beautifully done with high-grade audiophile components. Everything is constructed with love and care. Everything is so neatly done and looks built to last the breaking of the Seventh Seal! Inside and out, the filter is just the highest, highest quality. It even smells audiophile! Where does Justin Everman get 'essence of audiophile' from?! Utterly silent in operation when off in the chain.

Customer Support : 9
It seems that he offers amazing support for his products. I live in the Uk but I would like to contact him about externalizing the dip switches and putting an led on it. Perhaps I'll update this section when I've done so. I'll give em a high score cos great support is obviously there and the product is so darned good.

Overall Rating : 10
This effect has replaced my keeley modded distortions and overdrives. It's just simply better although of course it may not be for all. However, I'm willing to bet that there must be something for everyone in the Everman stable. Every man (and woman) should have an Everman! I use this pedal to summon demented demons from the dam-ned depths of distortion ! Distortion has never been so much fun! This box is chock-full of Voodoo and Mojo. If you see it, for God's sake buy it!

it is very easy to obtain good sounds but there are a lot of great sounds once you understand the controls and set the internal switches to accomodate "your sound". the controls are labeled in a straight forward and immediately understandable. the manual is well laid out and reads easily. it contains some settings for the pedal. there are also some great settings in a previous review.

Sound Quality : 9
my unit is actually a custom build with a "pot". i really like the inclusion of this because i can have 2 different lo fi tones to choose from with the stomp of a foot. this pedal has a plethora of sounds, gives you an instantly distinguishable sound while being able to mix with about any kind of music. this pedal can be noisy, but its a very pleasing noise and is tailored to be there(think zvex lofi looper, another favorite, on steroids). i would reccomend getting this pedal if you are thinking about it.

Reliability : No Opinion
i would gig with this thing open it up and you will see a cared for hand crafted product. the soldering is great, the footswitches seem sturdy. but i give a no opinion rating since i havent had it too long. see customer support below...

Customer Support : No Opinion
justin everman is a great guy, he e-mails you back promptly and is really into his company and your satisfaction. i think if you had a problem with the pedal it would be taken care of in a timely and affordable manner.

Overall Rating : 10
if this were stolen i would e-mail jeverman and have one at my door in 2 weeks, and shame on the person that would do that. and if i found them i would spank them with their pants off!

this pedal isnt comparable to any other pedal on the market, you would have to buy at least three pedals to even try and achieve any of the settings on this thing. and the great thing is its not a "noise synth" pedal, you can actually use it in many styles of music....honest! i think hip hop/electronica artists would really be into this during mixdown, or even on some cool bass sounds. i like to run drums through it in mixdown.

Ease of Use : 8
Easy to get instant great and useable sounds out of this unit, but it really repays in-depth tweaking. The relationship between the controls is subtle and quite complex but getting good tones doesn't depend on kno0wing the pedal inside out.

Sound Quality : 9
There is a wide variety of lo-fi tones here, just like it says on the website. But it is also possible to get great 60s spikey lead sounds which rival any of the countless overdrives and distortions I've tried. The tone controls actually do something dramatic for once. And although the band-pass filter could be a little sharper for my tastes, the overall flexibility is stunning. AM radios, torn speakers, next door neighbour practising, 60s Zappa fuzz... they're all here.

Reliability : 10
I always look inside pedals I get, and this looks as clean and solid on the inside as it does on the outside.

Customer Support : 10
I had the custom option built and Mr Everman was extremely helpful. All my emails were replied to the same day, and he really cares about his products. Honestly, couldn't be better.

Overall Rating : 10
I am a professional guitarist, string arranger and producer. I play all kinds of stuff but specialise in ambient, industrial and singer songwriter stuff. If you are interested in this pedal just go ahead and get it, it's incredible value for money and you won't be disappointed. It is not simply a "screw your sound up" box. It can be really subtle and beautiful and the fuzzes are great. The Ibanez Lo-Fi is also a cool pedal and more "overdrivey" but there's no comparison when it comes to tone, craftsmanship and versatility. This pedal really does something special.

my J.Everman Low-Fi Filter is a prototype pedal
it has 4 controls:
range : selects from 6 different tonal ranges
filter : moves a band pass filter across the audio spectrum
tone : controls the high frequency roll off
gain : adjusts the output volume

and it has 6 internal dipswitches : that?s where the fun starts ?
The unit is internally adjustable and can be set to personal taste. The 6 dipswitches can be turned on or off to configure the filter section in many different ways :
1 : fuzz1 degradation
2 : fuzz2 degradation
3 : mid range filter 1
4 : mid range filter 2
5 : high pass filter
6 : low pass filter

either dipswitch 5 or 6 must be on, these switches select capacitors that reconfigure the pedals circuit so one must be selected at all times. Basically, you have to tweak the dipswitches until you find a setting that suits you best and then leave it that way.

The pedal design is very functional, it would perhaps be more functional if the pedal gave direct access to the dipswitches, but it did not bother me.

For those interested, custom pedals using the same circuit, with another footswitch and all the internal switches put on the outside of a bigger box are available from the custom shop.

Sound Quality : 10
So, first thing is to decide on the dipswitch combination, here are some sample settings for the dip switches :
4+5 : bass heavy radio
3+5 : treble heavy radio
only 5 : high pass radio
1+5 : filtered fuzz 1
2+5 : filtered fuzz 2
2+6 : fuzz 3

After tweaking the inner switches for a while, I finally decided to keep the 1-5 setting for the time being, and I was able to get that typical sound of a cranked Vox AC30 Top Boost amp. I explored the fuzz settings of the pedal, stumbled upon some octaver and ringmod fuzz sounds, and realized it would take me much longer than I first thought to sort out all possible settings. The fuzz settings are phenomenal, I could get raspy, bassy, splattered, squealing, thunder, and violin kind of fuzz sounds.

The controls are excellent, the dissonance switch goes from slight tonal degradation to extreme tonal degradation in 6 steps, finding the right configuration with the internal dipswitches yields that many possibilities, although there is a bit of overlap, this pedal has an almost endless variation of settings.

The filter control is just like a wah pedal, it also boost the highs a bit and the tone control boosts the lows. Now the filter and tone controls both are wide range controls and again, lots of options there, superb interaction, these controls are a very dynamic duo, unlike the classic tone controls on pedals.
The gain control is fantastic, a slight volume drop when turned all the way down, it reaches unity gain fairly quick and then takes off and gets loud and it goes louder and becomes brutal. Nice. With the gain all the way up, you get that characteristic AM radio hiss.

I mainly use a Fender Jazzmaster into a Mesa Boogie Mark I or Fender Twin.

Reliability : 10
Your typical J.Everman pedal, sturdy, spartan and stylish design, extremely functional, no LED, built to last, true bypass switching, clean soldering and wiring, top notch craftmanship.

Customer Support : 10
Justin Everman replied to all my e-mails within 24 hours and he was very helpful, friendly and trustworthy person to deal with.

Overall Rating : 10
according to J.Everman, the Low-Fi Filter is what you get when you combine an adjustable bandpass filter, a highpass, low pass and band pass filter circuit, custom degredation diode control, white noise source, high gain boost circuit and even a slight octave tone all in one

it's hard to label this pedal, it's a fuzz, it's a distortion, it's a treble boost, it's a lo-fi filter, it's a octaver, it's a green ringer kind of ringmod, it's a Jawari, it's a bass fuzz, it's a white noise generator, it's a sustainer, it's a feedbacker, it's the Low-Fi Filter

Anyone looking for a fuzz or a distortion or a pedal to shape your tone, still can't decide what to get, should look into the J.Everman Low-Fi Filter.
