Four knobs: Volume (push/pull - normal/compression), Tone, Gain, Boost. None others needed. THe volume knob when down is in normal mode and when pulled up is in compressed mode giving more of a boost rather than distortion, but completely kicks a tube amp into distortion wonderland. The manual looks like it was printed on an HP DeskJet but gives a very good understanding of how to use the pedal.

Sound Quality : 9
Here's the tricky part. When I plugged this into my old Princeton Stereo Chorus (SolidState) it sounded like every other pedal, but when plugged into my Fender Blues Junior (Tube Amp) the sound difference was incredible!!!! It seems to know just what makes a tube amp make "that tone" that we're all looking for and tickles that part of my tube amp. Some say it's a Tube Screamer copy, but it's more than that. Is a ham sandwich the same as a turkey sandwich???? They're both sandwiches but are completely different. Such is the same with the TubeScreamer and the Fulldrive2.

My only wish is that it had separate Hi-Mid-Low EQ controls, but they say that Fulltone is coming out with a new pedal called the DistortionPro which will have this feature. I'm going to have to try it out.

Reliability : 10
I've owned mine for about 6-8 months now and I've only had to replace my battery twice. I use it about everyday and it's never given me any problems. I use it without a backup

Michael Fuller is by far one of the best guys to deal with. And the cool thing is that when you contact Fulltone you don't get a 16 year-old kid answering the phones but the guy who built the darn thing himself. I think he would be able to answer any question you had.

For basic rock and blues, this is it! Here's a small list of everyone who uses his pedals:
The Rolling Stones, John Fogerty, Mutt Lange (Producer extraordinaire), Dan Huff (nashville great), Nick Lashley (Alanis Morrisette), Bush, Oasis, Peter Frampton, Eric Johnson, and Robin Trower

4 knobs, two switches (overdrive/boost), pretty easy. Once you dial in the tone you need, then the rest is basic.

Sound Quality : 8
I use a Strat,an ES-335, and a peavy tube amp (Classic 30). The Strat sounds the best, but with the Gibson it can get a bit muddy due to the humbuckers. The pedal really likes when the amp is turned up b/c it likes when the tubes are cranked up. (using this pedal with a solid state amp would be silly) The pedal does allow you to keep the original tone of the guitar and amp (rare among pedals)due to its' "true bypass," so it doesn't bog down your signal like all other mass produced pedals. I also use a crybaby wah and a Deja-vibe (also Fulltone) before the Fulldrive in the effects chain and it works well with the other effects. I also have a Boss OD-1 (old school, some say the equivalent of a tube screamer) and the Fulltone sounds much, much better b/c it only adds to the tone without manipulating it. Awesome.

Reliability : 10
It seems like a rock. I gig without a backup because I don't have enough money to purchase two Fulltones. I've heard that Mike Fuller is always answering emails or phone calls if it's necessary so I'm not worried about it.

n/a. hasn't screwed up yet.

I mostly play rock/funk (chili pepper/wilco/Jimi style) and it's perfect for me. I've been playing for about 9 yrs and I would get another if it were lost or stolen. It's convenient to have an OD pedal with a boost option for lead b/c before I was using an OD pedal with my amp overdrive and sometimes it could get out of control when I used both for a boost. Also, it is a cool blue color. Ibanez ts-9 tube screamer comes in runner up.

For a big stompbox with 4 knobs and two switches, very easy to use. Literally any setting you choose is usable and very good, the knobs just allow you to dial in exactly what you're looking for. The manual is just a few printed pages on stock letter-sized paper, but describes what each control does very well, and is useful.

I had a Vox wah modded to true bypass, and liked it so much I've insisted that every pedal I buy from now on has this feature. You can put the FD2 anywhere in your chain and not worry about it.

Sound Quality : 10
My setup is simple: a stock AmStd Strat w/GHS Nickel Rocker Low Tune strings, the Fulldrive-2, and a Fender Blues Junior. I play blues almost exclusively, some classic rock. I don't gig at this point, being only a new player (1.5 years), playing for my own pleasure. SRV, B.B King, Hendrix, Trower, and Buddy Guy are my heroes, for what it's worth.

I just love this pedal. I had an Ibanez TS-9 reissue modded to TS-808 which I used before the Fulldrive, and I liked it. But it still had a trebly harshness and lack of versatility. I think of the FD2 as a TS-808 without the harshness, far more versatility, and no bad habits. The FD2 honestly doesn't wow me with some new amazing tone I never had before; it just does what exactly I want, with no BS, and no downside.

The sound of the FD2 depends on what you make of it. It can go from a very ballsy distortion to a very clean boost, with everything in between. It gives you the TS-808 bite, but without the trebly-ness and lost low-end. Your basic tone is left prefectly intact, for better or worse :-).

With the boost on, I get all the distortion I can handle for my tastes. The comp-cut clean boost is amazing, far cleaner than the amp itself cranked with no effects or gain (I haven't figured out how the FD2 pulls this off yet). The basic overdrive is a nice, clean grind that sounds just beautiful from single coils. I have a Les Paul Studio that I haven't even tried with it yet, but I expect to be thoroughly impressed with creamy crunchiness.

Overall, this is just the best single pedal I've ever tried. If you want an overdrive that preserves and enhances your sound, it'd be hard to go wrong with this guy.

My next pedal will likely be a Fulltone DejaVibe2, to get the watery/Leslie tone.

Reliability : No Opinion
Works for me, too new to be able to comment without any personal experience. Built like a tank, though, with excellent workmanship throughout. Very, very nice.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Too new, never tried, so it would be unfair to comment without personal experience.

Overall Rating : 10
Just a great pedal, a base "foundation" pedal to build your sound on, I leave it on all the time. Love the sound, the rugged and friendly design, and the true bypass. Can't wait to buy me another Fulltone, if they're all this good. It does what it does so well, I honestly can't think of anything nasty to say about it, except that it's fairly pricey, and hard to find. Other than that, it's exactly what I was looking for, so I'm happy.

Lots of things to play around with, but they all sound pretty damn good.

Sound Quality : 10
Wow. I run a Strat-535 Wah-FD2-TS9(for lead boost)-Phase 100-Memory Man to a Twin. This thing sure does sound good. It really nicely drives, the boost mode sounds good (almost a little Marshall sounding when dimed) and I LOVE the way the tone of the guitar and the notes still shine through.
When I first got this pedal, I was a little concerned. There is not a ton of gain- it's very organic sounding. I was a bit worried my band mates would clamor for the super-driven compressed chugga-chugga tone I had used in the past. I'm going from using humbuckers and a Mesa style preamp to a Strat with Bill Lawrence pickups and the FD2. Leaving my California tone behind and going to big nasty Texas-ness, where the crunch and glass makes for some nice unruly behavior. What a damn nice pedal. It sits GREAT in the mix. My only regret is that I want to be able to use the boost sometimes as a rhythm crunch channel and then step on the TS-9 as a booster, but the TS-9 is compromising some of the tone of the FD2. I'll just have to wait till that Fuller issues that "Fat-boost" thing of his...

Reliability : No Opinion
It looks sturdy enough, but I still bring a couple interesting boxes (TS9,SD9) in the back of my Twin to shows to cover my butt.

Customer Support : 7
Fuller is short and firm with his emails, but the trick is to be polite and respectfully acknowledge that you are taking up his time. Remember, he has a business to run, music to play, and an army of guitar nerds who just want to chat that he needs to avoid. I never ask more than what I really need to know, and I thank him in advance. Treat him as you would want to be treated and he's been nothing but fine.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
I play in two very different bands, one write rock and roll pop songs and the other is mood country music. I play a good deal of slide guitar, and this pedal is fun to play with. It's a good pedal.

It is not the be-all end all. I can picture plenty of situations where this pedal would be wildly inappropriate. To me, saying something is a "10" means it can do it all. Magic Johnson in the 1979 NBA Finals is a "10".

I am using this drive with a Rivera Suprema 55, a 55 watt, El-34 equipped, closed back, 1x12", which is loaded w/ a v30. I play telecasters, of which I have several. My main axe is an ash-bodied American Standard, with a Duncan "antiquity" in the bridge. The Fulldrive is not noisy at all, considering I run the master volumes on the amp very hot, in order to drive the power section harder. The pedal reacted very nicely with the Rivera, which by the way, does not seem to like several of my other pedals. I have been a little dis-satisfied with the over-drive created by way of the amps own pre-amp section, and thus have been using that amp primarily for my cleaner tones. (marshall for my dirt) With the Fulltone engaged, I have been able to coax some terriffic dirty tones from the Rivera, tones that are FAR superior to the "stock" tones found in the front amp of the amp itself. The pedal is EXTREMELY organic, and nuetral. It does not give your amp that "nasaly" mid-boost that so many boxes do. As Tele player, and one who dials in a fair amount of mids on the front end, I hate it when a pedal (Ts-9's, Clons, and others, I've had/have them all) severely boost the mids. I don't need that boost. What I needed was a pedal that would enhance, compliment if you will, the tone of my amp, without messing with its tonal signature. The Fulltone does just that. It makes the amp sound better, NOT different. I love that. The tone knob is VERY useful, and does not create a "pinched" nasal sounding high end, even when dimed. I leave it 3/4 open, to retain a nice chime. Not abrasive at all! Good job M. Fuller, wherever you are. Also, I would like to mention that the actual "type" of overdrive that is generated by the Fulltone, is far more "natural" sounding than any pedal I've ever heard or owned. It is a sweet, "fast", tight, tube over-drive that will work well with any amp. (I speculate) It is a "useable" distortion, at least for what I play, which is heavy, guitar driven, pop-rock songs, ala Matchbox 20, LIT, M.Sweet, Cheap Trick ect...

Reliability : 10
So far, so good. Will use it at gigs very soon. Can't wait. Very well-built.

Haven't had to contact Mike, but I know people who have, and who know him personally, (having spent the last 13 yrs. around the L.A. scene), and I've heard he is a good person to deal with.

Overall Rating : 10
If I lost this pedal, I would certainly buy another. I feel the price is fair for such a fine product. I've been playing for over twenty years, recorded, toured, and performed professionally for about 14yrs.
I have owned over 30 amps, and have lost count of the effects I've owned over the years. I put the Fulltone in a category all by itself. That is the " it don't **** with your tone" category, one not occupied by too many products, at least not for me. It is truly a "sophisticated" over-drive, and should appeal to anyone who's into organic, "real" sounding guitar tones. P.S. I've been really digging the tones S. Crow's guitarists get, and this pedal allows me to achieve those tones quite easily. Cool.

Very smooth!Maybe too smooth, but yet pretty damn great!I owned it for three weeks now and finally come to understand it and now love it!I can get that warm Tubescreamer sound, but with more bass and better harmonics! No doubt that this Fulldrive II TR100 is alot more warmer and has more gain than the FM FulldriveII(new blue model).IMO all Fulldrives should sound like this!I think this model has the Tubescreamer chip(JRC 4558)?This Fulldrive II TR100 sounds great in my setup with my Jekyll&Hyde. From blues, country rock to soft rock this baby cries tone!Quality!!!!!!!

No doubt the BEST sounding overdrive pedal on the market, but the Jekyll&Hyde is the most versatile pedal on the market! This Fulldrive II TR100 is an limited edition of 100 Reissue of the old orange Fulldrive II.Great pedal, the only thing I would change is to add more output(volume)to the boost channel of this pedal! It's pretty cool that a pissant like me can own the same pedal as a pro(know whatta I mean?)!So even if you are a pissant(that's what I've been called?),you can still own a pedal with real tone!Overall this pedal can't be beat! This pedal being a dual overdrive pedal can do so much more than you clean boost pedal and tubescreamer that it's hard not to deny it's true beauty!Mike only made 100 of these,so it will be pretty hard to replace!

It is an easy pedal to set up like most stomp boxes. The manual is short but it tells all you really need to know.

Sound Quality : 9
My setup is this Fulltone Clyde Wah> Fulltone soulbender> Fulltone Fulldrive 2> MXR Phase 90> Line 6 DL4 every pedal does its job and everyone gets along to give me great tone. All my pedals are true bypass so they sound great when not on. I prefer to use batteries, for me wall worts and power strips are just a hassle. The overdrive is tasty. But the point I really wanted to get across is this pedal is not just for blues Guys I am a classic rocker and you can get sounds similar to T.Rex, Queen, and Heart as well as everyone's favorites Led Zepplin, Hendrix and Beatles. it really distorts in the boost mode.

Reliability : 10
I have had this box for 10 months with no problems

Customer Support : 8
Mike Fuller is very helpfull and I'm sure if the fulldrive were to break he would fix it no problem

I love classic rock but my personel style is spacey type music, in the vein of space needle and Pink floyd. I am 25 and have been playing for 10 years. If it were lost I would buy another one when I could (it took me 6 months to save up for this one). I love that you can set two different settings one slightly overdriven for rhythem and one molten lava for leads. I never use it to overdrive my amp or for solo boost I just use it like a standard stomp box. After a while I got sick of Heavy metal distortion and I went in search for something a little more organic and I believe I have found it with this pedal

I got the Fulldrive 2 TR. It's a limited edition batch of 100 pedals built to the same specs as the favorite '95 orange Fulldrive 2 (pre FM mod) owned by a guy named Thomas Roberts (TR). These were commissioned by Tommy. It has the TS-808 chip and some other different pots and caps, etc. All the controls are the same as the blue ones. The TR's are a redish orange color and has a sticker calling it a Fulldrive 2 TR 100.

Sound Quality : 10
I'd never been real impressed with the blue FD 2's and was waiting for Tommy to get these in for several weeks. I wasn't let down. All the things I wanted out of a FD 2 were there. A little more gain, plus more tooth, grit and growl. It's like a TS-808 with more gain, the added boost section and a true-bypass switch. Great!

Reliability : 10
Like all the Fuller stuff, built like a tank.

Customer Support : 9
Just fine. Some say he's short with them, but hey, the guy's busy. I don't expect him to spend the day with me.

Overall Rating : 10
I play a wide range of music and this is pretty versatile. Good with a squeeky clean amp and great with a moderate to highly overdriven amp. Again, it's like the other FD 2's, but with more gain and growl. Tommy's the only guy getting these from Mike Fuller. He can be reached thru Guitarzan in Dallas, TX. 214-321-3444.

As easy to use as most OD, however there are some interaction that takes a little time to get used to. Never looked at the manual, just twisted knobs. Perhaps the tone knob is more a precense than anything else above 2.00 o'clock

Sound Quality : 7
The FD2 FM works good to very good with most guitars and amps. Prefer it with single coils, especially trad. sounding Strat and Tele ones. The hotter signle coils seems to become a little mushy, but I'm very picky about these things. The same goes for humbuckers, but I never stomp on the FD2 when playing LesPauls or other humbucker guitars. Interacts very good with other OD/Dist/Fuzz boxes. Smooths out some edge on fuzzes/distortion. Especially together with a Hotcake for a heavy rock sound. Ampwise I prefer it together with 6L6 based ones, especially the trad BF Fender sound. It works OK with a Marshall and Vox. Feel that it likes to see a amp thats already breaking up a little or is close. That goes for most Fulltone stompers. Guess the competition in the 2 channel Overdrive market is kinda fierce so thats why I rate it at 7. Guess its strongest suit is the smoothness.

Reliability : 10
As all Fulltone built like a brick. Have used this pedal for almost 2 years and have had no problems with it.

Customer Support : 5
Always reply pretty fast so I have no problems with that aspect. His attitude is something else, can be pretty much full of his own ... at times. So this is a mixed bag. Didn't like my complaint about a couple of mishaps with other products. My feeling was that he accused me for doing something wrong. So M. Fullers mood pretty much determin what kind of service you get.

Overall Rating : 7
Playing the average blend of rock and blues, some classics from time to time. The FD2 FM is a very good box. There are many good tones in this pedal. Have some 20+ years experience playing. Collect stompers, so I would buy another one if I lost this one. Have a fair collection of guitars and amps as well. At the moment I perfer the Barber TonePump over the FD2 so its on its way off the big fx board. However this might change and the FD2 or another 2 channel OD could get on there. I wish it had a little more gain on tap and the possibility to dial in differnt loudness levels between the channels. To my ears this box is in the mainstream Tubescreamer lane, a midboost swich would be cool. Feel its a little "too generic", more personality so I could hate or love more intense would be nice. Than again the "generic" amp like feel is what makes it good as well.

Layout is very simple and accessible. Volume, Tone, Overdrive, Boost. Dialing in my sound took all of about...10 seconds. There is a manual for the unit, but who needs it? I know in the past, there were FullDrives that were tweaked with a higher mid-range and many people had them customized to flatten out the mid-range..sort of scoop it I suppose.

Sound Quality : 10
I use a Nashville Glaser custom Strat w/ EMG Active Mid-Boost Sensor Pickups; also, I use a home-made custom strat with '57 pickups and a p-90 in the bridge; along with a Dan-Electro Hodad. All of these through a Fender 4x10 Deville. The pedal is noiseless, as it has true-bypass, hence, no tone coloration. The effect is smooth and gradual. The boost channel is independent of the overdrive channel for more drive. I dial up sounds from Jimi, Clapton (yardbirds and cream), Stevie, and many others. Thanks to the Push/Pull Comp Cut Knob, the effect can also be used as a clean boost, in both channels. I use A Deja'2, phase 90, TS-1, Memory Man, Clyde Wah, and all of it works like clockwork together.

Reliability : 10
It's a Fulltone. Need I say more? If somehow, by some Godly force, it was broken..I'd buy another one.

Customer Support : 10
Mike was very prompt in e-mail responses (2 hours at the most) and on the phone I never had a problem contacting him. He's very confident in his work, and he has every right to be. His pedals are the best.

Overall Rating : 10
I play blues, country, bluegrass, funk, rock and jazz. I own many high-quality effects, 2 of which are Fulltone, soon to be 3 or 4, and they're the best I own. I'd definetly replace it if something happened to it. My favorite feature is the Comp/Cut push/pull knob feature..it allows for my country diversity to come through. This pedal is a music maker. For anyone who has any doubts, or questions about Fulltone, e-mail and ask.

This is a mixed bag. After reading all the good reviews I expected it to blow away my 1980s TS 9 tube screamer. Side by side the TS 9 was better, easier to use and at the same drive levels, much to my surprise the TS 9 had less hiss and hum. In only one area did the FD 2 surpass the TS 9 GAIN True the TS 9 does remove a subtle amount of bottom but this isn't a bad thing, when playing with a band you don't hear the lows anyway and it helps the guitar cut through better. Again the bass loss is very subtle. I must say I was disappointed because for over 30 years I have always searched for better tone and this just wasn't the one.One more thing, when using my powerhouse strat with the mid boost on. The FD 2 gave a splattered sound when playing the E and A strings. Without the boost it worked fine. Perhaps the TS 9 has more head room. The FD 2 is a good sounding overdrive for 60 or 70 bucks. But 200 is insane

Lots of options. My preference is Volume @12 o'clock (pushed in); Tone @ 11:00 o'clock; overdrive @ 9:00 o'clock; boost @ 11:00 o'clock; both overdrive & boost on (all the time).

Sound Quality : 10
My main setup used with this pedal is a '57 Strat or Gibson ES-335 into a '65 Fender Twin. I like to use this pedal as follows Clyde Wah - '69 - FD2 - ChoralFlange - EchoPlex (Reissue-now called "The PLex") - amp. This setup is heaven - I can absolutely nail Jimi, SRV, Clapton, Beck, & Page with this setup.

The FD2 sounds best when your amp is hot and the volume is up.

If this stomp box is in working order when you receive it, then you'll never have a problem. Quality American-made workmanship.

Fuller makes a great stomp box, maybe the best. But let's face it, the guy is an arrogant douche-bag. I'm buying his product though, not his attitude. I also own Fulltone's '69, Clyde Wah, & ChoralFlange.

Overall Rating : 10
Without a doubt, this pedal is the best of the best when it comes to overdrive pedals, trust me, I've been playing for 34 years and I am a professional studio musician. I play everything, predominantly commercials & TV ads now. I currently own all the great overdrive pedals (including: Klon Centaur, TS-9, TS-808, BOSS OD-1, Blackstone Mosfet, & Barber Tone-Pump), I prefer the FD-2 to them all, it's sonically richer & more musical. If I was Fuller, I'd sell this bitch for $400. I own 2 of them.

I wish somebody would get one of these pedals in Kenny Wayne Sheppard's hands - I'm sick of hearing his thin overly-compressed noisy tone on the radio. I mean if you're gonna base a career on being an SRV knock-off, you might as well try to come close to his tone.

Just follow the suggested settings in the manual and you are off and running. Great sounds will spring from your amp! For tweakers, there is alot here. Two channels of overdrive plus a compression cut feature allows a huge variety of tones all while preserving the basic sound of your guitar and amp.

Sound Quality : 10
Imagine you are stranded on an island for life. That's the bad news. The island has AC power and an outlet. That's the good news. Even better, you get to take one guitar, one amp and one overdrive pedal. It could get tough to choose the guitar and amp but I, for one would have an easy time with the stomp box - the Full Drive 2 wins hands down. I read over 70 reviews here before buying so I had high expectations. I really hoped I could get the "magic" tone with this product...it delivered-period. My rig is generally strats or teles into vintage Fender amps and I want a smooth, round overdrive without harshness and loaded with sweet even ordered harmonics. Over the years I tried a variety of pedals (Rat, Turbo Rat, Expandora, Boss, Danelectro, MXR, DOD, Tubeworks, Marshall Guv'nor, Tech 21, vintage TS808, to name a few). I settled on a reissue Ibanez TS9 and it is not a bad pedal for a basic blues/rock sound. However, the Full Drive's richness and tonal complexity are, in my opinion, without equal. The unit is relatively quiet as is the on/off switch. True bypass switching is a plus. It sure feels good to put away those catalogs and play guitar!

Too soon to tell but if the workmanship is any indication, it should be no problem.

I emailed Mr. Fuller with a question about another of his products on a Saturday and he responded on Monday. I also ordered a switch from his internet site and it arrived within a couple days. To me, this is evidence that Fuller cares and will provide excellent service. My rating is only based on my two experiences which were not repair related.

Overall Rating : 10
Tone, tone and tone are the three things I like about this pedal. Plus looks, workmanship, vibe etc. I think it will be the last overdrive I buy unless it needs to be replaced with another Full Drive 2. One final thought, while the pedal isn't cheap, it is not priced out of line with other boutique pedals (and in fact is less than many) and it is not much more than the "off the shelf" units. I think it is money well spent.

Easy pedal to use...volume, tone, overdrive, and boost. The FD2 is a versitile pedal that delivers excellent tone! 2 modes in within each mode...clean overdrive, clean boost with comp-cut knob up, dirty overdrive/dirty boost with comp-cut knob down. I found Mike's recommended settings to me a good starting point, then tweak it for my set-up, desired gain, etc. Easy and no frills!

Sound Quality : 9
Excllent sound quality. I find the FD2 sounds best as the very first pedal in my signal chain. I play mosty BF or Brown Fenders, and a Sewell Wampus Cat 15 Amp. The FD2 allows me to run clean, dirty it up a bit, or go for full boost! With the comp-cut knob up there is virtually no color to the tone...just clean boost, to really drive into the amp...very responsive to pick attack and players dynamics. When the comp-cut knob is down there is fantastic overdrive on the first channel and amazing rich distortion with great sustain on the boost mode. I think there is a touch of color with the comp-cut down, but its thick and rich, where a lot of other pedals lose the low-end. When the FD2 is first in my chain there is very little noise at all, even when cranked!

Reliability : 9
The FD2 is high quality...great construction, good switches, etc. Inside its a good layout, and looks sturdy. Overall I think the pedal is dependable. Although I had one issue with the pedal, Mike fixed it and had it back to me within the week (see below).

Customer Support : 9
Mike is a direct, up-front guy...he's very knowledgeable, and as he's a busy guy I'm sure his time is valuable. If you can handle that, you shouldn't have any worries...he's always been very friendly to me, and answers my questions quickly. He even checks up to make sure everything we discuss is clear. My FD2 was making extraneous noise...I called Mike, went through possible causes, and sent the pedal back to him. He quickly replaced the defective JFET, and had the pedal back to me within the week! Everything works fine now!!

Overall Rating : 9
Overall the FD2 is a great pedal, capable of clean boost, smooth rich distortion, and full-on over-the-top sustain. Easy to use, dependable, and killer tones!

On the one hand, this thing seems pretty straightforward. However, this is really quite a complex little device, allowing you to set parameters in 4 different modes: regular, boost, or using the comp/cut feature in either regular or boost mode. The manual is well-written and clear--entertaining even! I really had to mess around with this thing for awhile to find the best tweaks--I've used it w/3 different amps so far, and it required somewhat different settings for each amp.

Sound Quality : 10
This is probably where the hunt for the perfect overdrive ends. If you're after raucous gain, well you probably should go with another pedal. However, I'm already using a high-gain amp (a Mesa Boogie DC-5), so the Fulldrive 2 just makes it sound like more Boogie--just better. It's a relatively quiet pedal, even compared to the Ibanez Tube Screamer. I've also used this with a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe on the clean channel with okay results, one of the better Marshall JCM 800 50 watt heads (added excellent harmonics and sustain at lower volume without adding much noise), and I'll be using it with my new Rivera. So far, this thing worked the best for me with the Boogie. Boogie overdrive can be overkill, and the midrange on a Boogie can get annoying at times, but I've found that the Fulldrive really does the trick--I'll set the Boogie gain much lower than usual, and kicking in the Fulldrive keeps the better characteristics of the Boogie happening--keeps it from getting muddy in some of the bigger rooms. I'm using stock American Standard Teles and a Lone Star Stratocaster. Also, the true bypass is an outstanding feature...not quite sure how I got along without it!

Don't know--too early to tell. Built like a tank, though.

Mike Fuller seems like quite the enigma. Haven't had to deal w/him yet. Some folks love him, some folks say he has an attitude or whatever. Just remember, he's a working musician too, and it requires a lot of patience to deal directly with a bunch of tone-freaks like us! Of course, when I plunk down some serious $ for a pedal, I expect superior service. There is a lifetime warranty on this thing, but who knows how long it might take to get it repaired? Well, if it does happen to end up in the shop, then I'll whip out the old TS9.

Overall Rating : 9
I play mostly blues, rock, and funk styles. Mr. Fuller has created a kickass product, and no one IMO has even come close. Okay, maybe the guys at Voodoo Lab, but that's another story. If this sucker were stolen, I'd probably get another. Wish the price tag were a tad bit lower, but I guess you get what you pay for. Bottom line is this thing will make your amp sound more like your amp (if that makes any sense)...it definitely adds to the music, without a doubt; sounds a bit different depending on the setup you're using. This is one quality piece of gear.

Between the 4 knobs and two foot switches, this isn't your average plug-and-play fuzzbox. It's got quite a learning curve, as it takes some time to get used to the interaction between the volume, gain, tone, & boost knobs, but once you get the hang of it, you're in fuzz heaven.

Sound Quality : 9
I run the Fulldrive-2 into the clean channel of a Matchless HC-30 with a 1-12" cabinet. The pedal's shadings come through very distincly this way, and it records well. Certain settings are more sensitive to pick attack variations, and you just have to experiment a lot to find what works well for your playing technique. It sounds very different from the Matchless overdrive channel, so it's a nice compliment for me. No distortion pedal is quiet when it's cranked, and this is no exception. All I can say is the bypass is quiet and true.

Reliability : 10
I use the Fulldrive-2 for recording only, so I can't comment on road reliability, but it's certainly the best constructed (and the heaviest) fuzzbox I've ever found. There is no skimping on box's presentation here, it's solid as a rock. I've had three years of trouble-free use.

Customer Support : 10
I've always gotten prompt email replies from Mike(even with pre-sales inquiries), and although I've had no major problems with any of my Fulltone pedals, he's always been there for help. If you're reading this and you've been turned off by other people's comments regarding his 'attitude', I've never encountered it, and think that given the volume of email/calls he gets during any given day, he's done a remarkable job.

"Superficial, glowing reviews will not get published". This is a quote from the review-writing instructions, and I'm not sure I understand it's relevance when a product warrants one. I've owned some good pedals and I've owned some crap, and if a product is worthy of praise and accolades, then it should get a glowing review. The Fulldrive-2 is the finest and most flexible distortion box on the planet, bar none. Now I dare you to print this.

This is a well built unit that is easy to use. It's a little larger than typical distortion pedals (5 3/4" X 4"). It was definitely designed with live use in mind. It's nice to have 2 independent switchable levels of gain. I can set and forget it.

Sound Quality : 9
I am commenting only on my setup. I use a Fender Vibrolux reissue amp with Celestion Vintage 10 speakers. My guitar is a Fender American strat with Seymour Duncan pickups (stacked humbucker in the rear). Styles played are rock, jazz, and blues. The Full-drive fits perfectly with this setup. This will do blues to medium rock very well. I am still looking for a pedal to do that 3rd gain stage that the Fulldrive doesn't do (aka Santana). I tried a Sustain Punch Creamy Dreamer for just that purpose but it colored the tone terribly and I lost some high end when it was in the loop and powered on (even though its suppose to be true bypass). The Fulldrive IS true bypass and is totally transparent when switched off. The Fulldrive does not color the tone you've worked so hard to get. You do need to keep the gain up as much as possible to achieve a great sound. It would be nice to have separate tone controls for both channels as the overdrive could use a little more highs in my opinion. Bottom line is this pedal is for more experienced players who are concerned about what their rig SOUNDS like. Final note.. If you can't afford a Fulltone wah get a Cry Baby 535Q. It's a great compliment to the Fulldrive and is also true bypass.

Reliability : 7
When I first got the unit it had an intermittent problem. I believe the compression circuitry was cutting in and out. I sent it back to Michael Fuller and he took care of it. He also upgraded my switches without me even asking! I have had no problems since (appx 5 months).

Customer Support : 9
Michael Fuller has always answered my emails. I believe they stand behind their product.

Overall Rating : 9
This pedal is a keeper. My favorite thing about it is the way the switches are set up. You can turn the left switch on and still not affect the unit. So you have clean to boost (2nd stage) by switching the right button on. Or you can go from overdive (1st stage) to boost. Very gig smart. My advise is get a very good regulated power supply to power it. Not a wallwart with no bypass caps to filter noise.

This is a nice simple overdrive pedal. There are several options such as compressed and non compressed overdrive, boost, tone, drive and volume. The only proviso to watch for is when you use the boost control in uncompressed mode to be VERY CAREFUL. It can really blast you back. It is explained very well in the manual.

Sound Quality : 10
This pedal is unbelieveable - if you already like the overall sound of your amp. As stated in several other reviews, it sounds better with good tube amps than cheaper transistor amps. With my Boogie DC-5 it rocks with a beautiful tone thru the clean channel. Nice and controlled. My Twin also provides excellent tone, but with a different charachteristic. Through my Bassman re-issue it is absolute NIRVANA! This is the main charachteristic of this pedal - IT DOES NOT SOUND THE SAME IN EVERY AMP!!! It adds overdrive to the tone, it doesn't CHANGE the tone - nor does it sound the same in every amp.

The boost button (compressed mode) will have you saying "Black Magic Woman" in no time. Thick, sustaining. It has it's own control which adjusts the amount of drive you want.

Reliability : 10
So far, so good. Metal casing, lifetime warranty. All the wiring inside looks neat. Good quality components.

Customer Support : 10
I phoned Fulltone before I bought the pedal and actually spoke to the man himself! Talked for about 1/2 hour. The man is a wealth of information and is understandably proud of his creations. I haven't had a problem since I bought the pedal (approx 6 months ago) and I believe that is the best customer support!

Overall Rating : 10
Considering you get 4 overdrives (by using compressed/uncompressed modes) this is an outstanding value. I really liked my Vox Valve Tone before I got this one. I still like it but it seems like a toy compared to the Fulltone in tone and build. It really elevated my tone from thin and lifeless to meaty, full, round, cutting. ON stage it gave me so much prescence. I find that lesser stomp boxes cut your tone and make you lifeless in the mix. Our soundman even noticed! Try this with a Bassman and head for a new experience!

I had read all of the hoopla about the Fulldrive 2 on HC, and since I was in the market for a good OD pedal for blues, I decided to take the plunge and buy one. Came with a box and manual but no sticker (darn!). I bought this used but it looked like it never left the store! Two footswitches, 4 knobs, pull-up for comp-cut. Hard-bypass is built in, which should be a must in anyone's pedalboard. Although the manual was just a few pages typed on a home PC, I found it to be very concise and to-the-point, which is just the way I like it. The powder blue paint job on it is very nice, too. I haven't used the comp-cut feature since I find that leaving it in the regular OD modes produce some very pleasing tones to my ears. No twiddling with digital rackmount parameter stuff here, just stomp 'n go!

Sound Quality : 10
I have a Fender Deluxe Plus Telecaster, that I've converted to a H/S/S pickup configuration, running through an old Ampeg V2 50-watt head into a 4x10 cabinet loaded with Mojo MP10R alnico speakers. The Ampeg is a very clean-sounding amp to begin with (highly recommended for blues, by the way) but it doesn't take much volume to make those Mojo's start breaking up. But using the FD2 with this setup really gets the vintage Chicago blues OD I've been looking for. Or, if I want something different, I'll sometimes use the "boost" switch and incorporate my Budda wah pedal. Nice, crisp, clear wah/OD.
I wanted to say that this past weekend I was doing some recording at home with my Korg D8 digital recorder and, as an experiment, decided to test the FD2 running straight into the recorder. I got some great results in doing this, and what I heard did not sound cold and sterile but very warm, used either in playing rhythm guitar (normal OD) or for doing solos (boost). So, IMHO, I recommend the FD2 for direct recording (no amp needed!).

Reliability : 9
I would depend on it, and would feel confident enough by now to use the FD2 on a gig without a backup (that is, if I were in a band, which I'm not at this time).

Customer Support : 10
Hasn't needed repair #1 since I've had it. I've e-mailed Mike several times with various questions about the FD2, especially before I bought it, and he responded either within the hour, sometime that day, or the very next day. His answers were always short and to-the-point (like the FD2 manual) but Mike has never been "short" or nasty with me. That's all I want, my questions answered with no added verbal garbage, egotism or nastiness thrown in, and Mike has always come through that way.

Overall Rating : 10
I play blues, maybe some blues-rock, and some bluegrass thrown in for good measure (I'm also a banjo player). I figured I've bored enough people with the gear I've mentioned already so suffice it to say that I have a bunch of other instruments, amps, effects, etc. I play and record with. There isn't anything I dislike about the FD2 and I would certainly buy it again if (God forbid) lost or stolen. But I really wanted to mention how good this sounds when used while recording, and with no amp needed!

it's pretty damn easy to get a good sound quickly. although i am bit perplexed as to the comp-cut feature- it seems like a clean boost to me. but it really works wonders no matter how you use this box.

Sound Quality : 10
i am using a 60's r.i. strat with Virtual Vintage pick-ups ( solo in the bridge, heavy blues for mid and neck), george l cables, into a tc electronic sustain+, fulldrive 2, voodoo lab microvibe, and a boss Ps-3 pitch shifter/d. delay. my amp is a 70 or 71 deluxe reverb with an eminence speaker. i hear no added noise when the fulldrive is engaged, but that may be due to the V.V. pick-ups. i play in my home studio for the most part, and am unable to really turn it up and wail, but i did an a/b with my expandora when i got the fulldrive, and was i in shock. the fulldrive 2 does everything it's users say-it maintains the sound of the amp and guitar without coloring it. compared to the expandora, it has far more bottom end, and the fulldrive 2 really sounds like my amp when im driving it flat out. i'm not trying to emulate anyones sound in particular, but it does make me sound closest to the sounds i hear in my head.

Reliability : 9
i havent had any trouble with it...it's used ( a 97 model) and it works like a charm so far. i would gig without a backup, mostly because i cant afford another one! however, if i see another one, i just may buy it.

i havent dealt with them....i've heard both good and bad about M. Fuller: i wont judge him til the day comes that i need help.

Overall Rating : 10
i cant say enuff good things about this baby. i finally got a chance to use in the studio with a number of amps ( matchless, bogner, bruno, marshall, victoria, et al) and it sounded swell with every one. i set the volume at 11 (knob pushed down), tone at 12, overdrive at 11, and boost at 11. this way i get two distinct overdrives. without the boost, it's great for a toothy crunch, and when i kick in the boost, it sings with delight. my guitar never sounded so good with an overdrive pedal, even with a vintage chandler tube driver. my friends were quite impressed as well, and commented on the sound at the end of the session. i've bought a number of OD pedals, and was always a little bit disappointed. thank g-d i've finally found the answer! if you are wondering about a great OD, this is the one. compared to a tube screamer, expandora, et al..this one delivers the goods. the only one i heard that almost changed my mind was the Voodoo Lab Overdrive, which is much cheaper at a 100 bucks. (btw, i really like all of the voodoo lab boxes, they are very rich and musical). but i think if you want to buy your last overdrive pedal ever, this is a damn good place to end your search. as someone else pointed out, from here it only gets different, not better. unless your into thrash and death metal, you'll find plenty of good uses for this box. BRAVO!

Ease of Use : 9
Very easy to use; finding the right setting is no problem, which is good since the knobs are easily moved whenever I transport the unit. Wish the knobs were a little more snug...I delicately put it into the box and take it out of the box so as not to change the settings. But the upside is you can change the settings with your big toe. Good, succinct manual.

Sound Quality : 9
My simple setup is strat-style (Fender and Carvin) single coil guitars through the FD-2 into a Mesa Boogie 22 watt combo...set for a cranked clean sound (really sweet and full!), with any modulation effects (always a Boss digital delay) in the effects loop. For stage use, I'm in the compressed mode of this pedal, which gives me a nice light vintage overdrive and a chunky medium OD with the boost engaged. There are infinite variations of settings between the OD and boost channels, so anybody who can't find satisfying, useful tones out of this box either has a crappy amp or doesn't know that the FD-2 is NOT for metal playing. The uncompressed "clean boost" mode of this pedal is not something I have gravitated to very much, but I honestly haven't given it a fair shake because the compressed setings are so nice. Perhaps if my clean channel was lackluster I'd be more inclined to use it for that class-A response. This unit is only slightly noisy in the higher gain settings, but certainly not a problem.

The claim to fame of this unit is its transparent overdrive, its ability to take your guitar/amp tone and overdrive it in the most natural way possible. I agree. There is no big mid-jump, the highs are enhanced with sweet upper harmonics, and the bottom end is preserved for the most part. I say for the most part, because to my ears there is some loss of focused bass response (fatness?) with milder OD settings, as compared to bypass mode. You can turn the tone setting into a bassier region, but with a loss of some of those beautiful higher harmonics. Now, in live applications with a bassist and drummer, I don't even notice the loss of bottom end, but I mention it because it is the only thing I've noticed about this pedal that I would like to change if it were possible. Nonetheless, I consider this to be the best OD unit on the market for my needs, and I wonder if changes to my set-up and/or settings wouldn't fatten up the milder OD tone. Nonetheless, a very solid 9 for this category.

Reliability : 10
I've had this unit for about 3 months (manufacture date on the back is 1/00), and have used it heavily during that time with no problems. Battery life is amazing...I left it plugged in and on (lights illuminated) by mistake for a 24 hour stretch, and thought for sure the battery was going to be dead. Nope! Still going strong with the original battery. Try that with a Boss pedal.

Customer Support : 9
For me, Fulltone gets high marks here. I know some folks on HC have mentioned that Mr. Fuller hasn't always given them satisfactory responses to questions, but that hasn't been my experience. He's responded quickly and personally to a couple email inquiries, and I'd rather he spend his time building top notch-effects than writing long dissertations in response to every question he gets. Of course, my unit is working great, but I'm confident that even if I had problems that Fulltone would be there.

Overall Rating : 9
This unit is a keeper. It suits my blues/R&B oriented sound needs almost perfectly. I've been at it for 20 years, so I know what I like by now, and this box has earned a place between my guitar and amp. I held off making a submission on the FD-2 for a few months because I wanted to really put it through its paces under a variety of settings. I give it a solid 9; it will turn any good tube amp with a nice clean sound into a three-channel tone machine, thus giving you a very versatile stage rig for rock and blues. Only the modest loss of bottom end in the bluesy OD range keeps this from being a 10.

Very simple to use and get a good sound.Manual came with it along with a cool sticker. If you have ever used an overdrive pedal or know how to play guitar, you dont need a manual.I think Mike includes the manual to cut down on the whining emails and phone calls he gets from people who say "uh duuude how do you work this thing?"It's very simple, plug your guitar into the input and from the output run a cable to your amp turn your amp on play and listen, twiddle some knobs, listen some more, and when you hear something you like, you got it!!!

I give it a ten cause it does what I want it to do.The first test was to run my G&L into the Fulldrive and into my 67 Deluxe Reverb. It took me all of maybe two minutes to get grooving. Then I said to myself "if I can plug my "V" into this pedal then into my Marshall and NOT have to change ANY settings, this pedal is going to the gig tonight.Fingers crossed and my siamese cat sitting on my Deluxe watching, I unplugged from the Fender (potheads take note on how simple this is)Marshall was warmed up and waiting,BUT before I tell you how easy it was to plug in,let me say PLEASE leave your standby off, dont want to fry speakers.I simply slid the cable in turned the standby ON and played and listened. How sweet it is!!Didnt touch a knob on the Marshall or Fulltone.Success!!!!!See how easy that was?

Sound Quality : 9
Very nice overdrive. In non-compressed mode it has very usable and transparent overdrive and boost, although its clean boost is not nearly as good as a Klon Centaur's. It's compressed mode is excellent. In overdrive (non-boost) mode, it has about the same gain as a TS-808. In boost mode that doubles. I A/Bed the pedal with both my best 808 and an earlier (black knob) flat-mids Fulldrive, playing a stock '59 slab board strat or a '66 tele into a Dr. Z Route 66. My pedal did lack some agressiveness and bass that both the other pedals had, but was quite nice, nevertheless. Maybe this has to do with changed components in the Fulldrives (there are some) but Mike Fuller wouldn't answer my question when I asked him about this (see customer support rating below).

Reliability : No Opinion
Don't really know. Some people have had problems and have had customer support problems when they had problems.

Customer Support : 1
After A/Bing the pedals, I e-mailed Mike Fuller to find out if the component changes could have effected the sound of the pedal that I was reporting. Good news: Fuller answered the e-mail promptly and personally. Bad news: as a person, at least as a professional person, he seems to leave much to be desired. Not only did he not answer the question, he became defensive about my asking it in the first place. This is sheer stupidity in terms of customer relations. I probably won't pursue it any farther, because I like the pedal and I don't have the time to deal with him. But if there were a REAL problem, be warned!

Overall Rating : 8
Aside from the poor and offensive customer support, for which I deduct 1 rating point, the pedal is very good. It does not replace either my Klon or better TS-808, but it is not supposed to be a clone pedal. Last thing I'll by from Fuller though.

I have to say that this pedal really did throw me for a loop. I turned it on out of its box, and I got a great sound. I cranked the distortion, I got a great sound. I closed my eyes and tweaked knobs, I got a great sound (I'm serious). It really is a joy to play this thing. There is no manual, one isn't needed. The four controls and two switches on the face of the box explain it all. I had the fulldrive set up and going within a matter of seconds after plugging it into my amp.

I use either a Fender Mexican Standard Strat that I've customized or a Parker FlyClassic into a Fender Roc-pro, a Marshall Jubilee Series jcm 2550, or a Marshall VS265R depending on my mood. This box can make anything sound good. It's a disgusting thought that this box can do that, but for me it can. With true bypass circuitry, the box will not color your tone while it is disengaged. The box is always very quiet, even on high gain settings. It is true that the pedal does not get those squealing high gain tones, but if you run another pedal through it (I recommend a DOD 69-B) or run the fulltone through your tube-amp or solid-state distortion, you really can get those fairly easily. The fulltone does a great job of warming up effect pedals. You don't get the subtleties at first, but once you've been playing for a while you really start to notice the transparent sounds that the box generates. It may not sound as impressive as a mesa, but it does a truly superb job at what it's meant to do.

Reliability : 9
While I do know that the box was built with great care, there are a couple of fairly small reliability issues. The first is the casing, it is made of sturdy steel, so I don't worry about the pedal breaking. But the battery being so close to the circuits with a less than adequate amount of wire makes me worry that I'll pull the whole damned thing out some day. You just have to be careful putting a new battery in, especially the first time. Battery use in my pedal is questionable and sound breaks up when the 9-volt gets low, but that's just the drawback of being a footpedal. Of course if this had been a sixty-dollar pedal, I wouldn't have even payed attention to that. This pedal really should be an educational experience for other manufacturers. Expertly done with only the best parts. Wonderful.

Customer Support : 10
I haven't had a problem to deal with, but I can simply say that fulltone has THE BEST customer relations in the business. THE BEST. I can't emphasize that enough. Any e-mail I have ever sent was answered within the week by Mike Fuller himself. That's a prodigious accomplishment for anybody, let alone the head of this company. But I guess all of these fulltone pedals are his babies. Maybe that's why they all carry his signature. I have never heard of a bad fulltone experience.

Overall Rating : 10
I play what people would probably deem "power-pop." I emulate the likes of Weezer, Nada Surf, and Harvey Danger. This pedal does the job. It more than does the job, it allowed me to attain that sound I've had in my head for years. The day that I got this pedal I wrote five new melodies. I do wish that it had some way to get that thick distortion, because then it would be the only pedal I would use. Let's face it though, it probably wouldn't sound as good then. So don't change a thing. This pedal is my baby. I love it. Changing batteries warrents the care of minor surgery. If it fell down a sewer drain, I would go after it. If it were hit by lightning and all of the insides were fried beyond recognition and the thing was melted to an extent where fulltone wouldn't fix it, I would buy a new one the next day.

Really like the virtually transparent quality of the "comp-cut" feature. The overdrive is equally versatile.

Reliability : 2
After having only used it,roughly two dozen times, and then, only in a studio,it quit. Make no mistake,it does sound great, when it's working. However, for a little over $200,I expected it to work a little longer. In 1979,I bought a DOD 250 Overdrive, for $40. After countless studio dates, and playing practically every club in the Southeast U.S.,that pedal finally died,in 1988. So,can someone explain this ?

Customer Support : 8
Even though they have answered my e-mails,promptly,I have one issue, with them: Why,after spending over $200 for this pedal,do I now have to spend another $16,for a switch, and probably another $35-50 to local tech,to fix a pedal that was used for less than a month ?

Overall Rating : 5
I've been playing, for over 30 years, mostly blues and jazz. As I stated, earlier in my review, this pedal is great, when working. However, after having it die on me,less than a month after purchase,I had to buy a back-up. (had a studio date, that night) I did NOT buy another FullDrive 2. Instead,I bought a "Route 66",by Visual Sound. As of today,I've used it for over 2 months,in the same capacity I was using the FullDrive 2 in,and have had no problems. Plus,it cost half as much. So,if I have the FullDrive 2 fixed (I haven't,yet, due to my disappointment with it malfunctioning,so quickly),it will to use as a back-up to the Route 66. Now,if Fulltone develops a situation, where the dealer is allowed (by warranty,or something)to replace a pedal,I'll consider forking over the considerable price attached to any of their other pedals, which, like the FullDrive 2,do sound great, when working.

No brainer, easy to dial in tones. All four knobs have useful musical range to it. Features are well documented below. I have not used the non-compressed mode at a gig yet. Saturday night, I was playing in a room that had mostly sheet rock walls. I've found in my travels that bars with wooden paneling (the old thick knotty pine stuff) have
the best tone. My sound was getting a bit lost when using the left
button. Next time I play there, I will try and use the non-compressed
mode. This is not the pedals fault, when I play it in compressed mode in the "woody" sounding places it's great. I still haven't figured out what to do with this non compressed mode, and hope someone who knows will email me.

Sound Quality : 10
Tested it with late 60's bassman with 2x12s and 68 strat with harmonic design pickups. I couldn't put it down, I have an 80's TS-9 with the
analog mike 808 mod, and it is not in the same league as the fulldrive2. I also have a blues driver which I'm selling to a friend, and the blues driver was not in the same league as the TS-9/808. So it was nice to have this tonal evolution (thanks to the web) occur in
less than one year. The first gig I used it on I was really psyched about the tone, and have been just as happy since. I have not used the second button extensively. I've been a two-dist (or OD) box fan
for a long time, and my typical old setup was the TS-9 into a ProCo Rat. I'm looking for a high-end replacement for the rat, but for the time being the fulldrive2 into the Rat (series) works well.

Reliability : No Opinion
Very sturdy box, the only thing that looks weak to the eye are the
two footswitches. But that is only because they are plastic, perhaps
they are designed to out last the metal ones?

Customer Support : 9
He responds quick to email, and was prompt when I ordered his CD.
To the guys that descibed his replies as terse, it may be a better
idea to give him short to-the-point questions. People trying to run their own business probably do not have time to write long replies.

Somebody called this thing a tube-screamer eater and they are right
on the money. This pedal is great, not a swiss army knife but does
the "transpaent preserve the amp tone" really well.

You need another pedal that does hard rock/metal sounds well if you are not just a blues or jazz player. The band I play in is pretty ecclectic so I need everything. The ideal thing for me would be if that Line6 distortion modeler works that's coming out in the summer.
I doubt it will, as with the flextone amp, ones excitement over the concept clouds their tonal judgement. I won't make that mistake again, and will always be sure to buy from a place that has a 30-day trial.

I bought this pedal about five months ago, and can hardly believe that I ever lived without it. The day I got it I could get the sound I wanted immediately. With only four knobs it is not as complex as a lovetone, but it can get any old vintage tone with just a little tweaking.

Sound Quality : 10
This is without a doubt one of the best sounding overdrives pedal that I've ever heard. The best thing about the pedal is the fact that it does not change the sound of your guitar or your amp. If you can get a rad sound out of your amp without a pedal, this pedal is a must because it can only make things sound better. I was amazed that I hadn't heard one of these from my friends. The only two things that could be cooler is the tone knob could do a little more instead of the minimal effect that it has, and the boost section could be a little more over-the-top.

Undoubtabley, one of the best pedal companies in the world making one of the best pedals on the world. I play in several different bands, (although I play a jazzmaster most of that time) and it has a use in every setting. I would definately buy another one if it ever breaks of gets stolen. If your looking for all those $400 - $500 pedals from thirty years ago, look no further than the fulldrive 2

Easy to dial in the settings except this is my OPEN LETTER TO EFFECTS MANUFACTURERS EVERYWHERE:

Please use large high contrast lettering for the controls so I can see the settings correctly when I am playing dark caves or stages with floodlights all over the place. This is very important.

Please put the lights that indicate on or off AWAY from the corresponding switch. That way, I can hit the the switch with my foot and IMMEDIATELY see that the switch is engaged, and I don't have to move my foot aside each time to make sure that I hit it correctly. Remember, I am playing in the dark in large boots and am already tripping on cords and have three other pedal settings to consider, and I don't need another hesitation. I shouldn't have to practice footswitching techniques. Also, players who have to look at their pedals don't get to play for the big money!

The pedal is very easy to use, and to understand. The manual is very basic, but does a good job of outlining the different "modes" of the pedal and the functionality of each control, plus gives 2- suggested settings.

Sound Quality : 9
I can sum it up in 1-word... Awesome! I am going to use the Full-Drive 2 pedal with a "newer-model" Top Hat Club Royale. With my Top Hat, I've tried a Ibanez Tube Screamer ( TS-9 ) and a Boss OD-1 OverDrive with my Les Paul Classic. The Boss sounds better than the Tube Screamer, but both the Boss and Ibanez change the tone of the amp ( not what I want )!

Reliability : 1
No, I can't depend on it! I played a store demo and loved the pedal. I liked it so much I bought one. I got a brand "new" boxed pedal and took it home, expecting to get years of use out of it, but much to my surprise, when I plugged it in...IT DIDN'T WORK!!!! Wait, I just spent about $200 ( with tax ) only to get it home and have it not work...something is wrong here Fulltone! Where's the QC check on the unit before it left the plant? Funny, because he later tells me on the phone that they have received in some questionable parts recently...why use them then?

Customer Support : 1
I called the store where I purchased the pedal and the salesperson said he would replace it once I brought the pedal back to the store ( which is about 1-hour from my house...no big deal). Then I called Michael at Fulltone and spoke with him. I was interested to see if any other out-of box failures had recently occurred, especially since the pedal had been built just a few week earlier ( possibly a "heads-up" that other out-of box failures might be expected ). Michael convinced me to send the pedal back to Fulltone, instead of getting it replaced at the music store where I purchased it from...BIG MISTAKE! I just got an e-mail from Michael saying if I want a "new" pedal back by the time which he had originally promised, I would have to pay for the shipping? What? After paying close to $200 for the pedal, and having it fail before I got a chance to use it, I now need to pay even more money to get a working unit back by his promised date. For this I give a "0" for customer service...there is no "0" rating...too bad!

Overall Rating : 4
I want to keep this positive! The unit I tried in the store was great....I love the tone of the pedal and the effect it had on my Top Hat amp. I guess I got a bad pedal ( it can happen ), but when you consider I purchased a "custom" pedal, the damn thing should work after I bought one. I have my fingers crossed that I get the pedal back sometime soon....and it works! Michael, I have other FullTone pedals and love them, but my experience with the Full-Drive 2 to date has not been very good....thus my rating of a 4.

This pedal is very easy and intuitive to use. Knobs do exactly what you think they'll do. Volume has two options via push-pull pot. They are compressed output (down) or uncompressed output (up). Tone control acts mainly for higher harmonics cutoff -- I find that around 11:00 position is neutral. Overdrive control is gain. Boost control is more gain, enabled with a separate on/off footswitch.

Sound Quality : 10
I primarily use this pedal as both a controllable clean boost to drive the front end of my amp (Booker V12MA) and as a sweet compressed distortion. The dynamic range of this pedal is fully realized with comp-cut. Lots of gain and lots more with boost on. Be careful--it really is a *lot* of gain. True bypass output when disengaged is a big part of its charm. Drives about as full on as you want for rock and blues, don't look for hyper-fuzz here. This pedal does what it does better than anything else.

Reliability : 9
It is built into a steel housing that is very firm. The knobs and switches are pretty robust it seems -- I have no reservations about bringing it anywhere.

Customer Support : 10
Mike Fuller is extremely friendly and his responses to questions are both informative and expedient. I've sent him email and I got a response in less than an hour. I obviously don't think this pedal will need much in the way of repair anytime soon.

Overall Rating : 10
As a clean-boost type of pedal this kicks ass. As a bluesy mild overdrive pedal this kicks ass. As a full-on rocking distortion type of pedal this kick ass. I'm blown away by the care in construction and sonic quality and I would buy another Fulltone pedal in an instant. I'm very satisfied that I will never need another overdrive.

This pedal is stright foward. There really aren't any tricks required to get a good sound. I have trouble getting a bad sound out of the thing. Bottom line: Easy to use. No PhD required.

I play an older PRS and have for the past year played a Fender Deville. As many of you know the Deville is not an amp many people wish to own (I have sold mine). The FD2 really did wonders for my fender. Noisy? No. I use a few settings and can get really different sounds from each setting. SRV? I don't know. Robben Ford? Without a doubt. I have been after Robben Ford's sound for quite a while and without a Dumble the FD2 REALLY helps. I can get there using the following: PRS-FD2-BF Twin Reverb. The BFTR and the FD2 together with capable hands, is Robben Ford. PS: The secret is in the battery! USE A HEAVY DUTY BATTERY (not Alkline)!

Reliability : 10
It's heavy. Built like a rock. I use it without a backup and bring extra batteries. I have had a batt. die on me and I still don't bring a backup. The backup wouldn't have helped, the song stopped anyway. I could be stupid.

Mike Fuller answered my email about the pedal before I bought it, but now we've got nothing to say to each other.

I've been playing about ten years. I don't know everything, but try every OD box you can get your hands on (I havn't played way huge or klon) then buy a Fulldrive. I hope the klon doesn't sound better because I've been happy w/ the FD and I'm broke. Bottom line: It only gets different from here.

A great dual overdrive pedal.I just wished the boost mode had MORE gain!I've played most of the Overdrive pedals out there,so I feel that I know what I'm talking about, and what I'm really playing. It does the blues and rock thing with class. But I still feel that the FDII is not as versatile as the Jekyll&Hyde, but I doubt it was designed for the high gain stuff!I play cover tunes&sometimes a little blues,so it's a great fit for me.If the boost mode had more gain,it would be PERFECT!If lost or stolen,YES I would replace it with another Fulldrive2!This baby is a keeper for life.

I have used this heavily for about two years, using a Carruthers Custom Strat and a variety of Teles, 335's, etc. Haven't found a guitar it doesn't sound good with. Even sounds great with the old vintage Magnatone lap steel. I have usually used it with either a Mesa Mk 1 reissue or a Rivera 55-12. The clarity and fluidity you get from this thing is really outstanding and it allows the distinctions of the guitar to come through - the day after I bought this my entire collection of Tubescreamers and various other distortions were posted for sale.

I always get asked about it and I'm sure I've sold them a few in the process. I play everything from R&B, blues, rock, jazz, David Torn-esque sonic experimentation, I've taken it on tour with a West African band, a Persian group, used it on country sessions, you name it - it's never let me down. This is the first review I've ever filled out and wouldn't be doing it if I weren't such an enthusiastic supporter. I really couldn't recommend it more highly. Right now, my Twin is not working, so I've been using my Fender Frontman 15R for a few weeks. It took a lot of messing around, but, much to my surprise, I have found some settings that make my practice amp sound pretty nice, downright good at times. The manual is only two pages, but that's all it needs, and explains the features well and gives some tips. I give it a 9 because it took a while to get reasonably good sounds for my amp--I know, I know, this is the design: it doesn't force it's tone onto your amp, it lets your guitar and amp's natural tone shine through.

Sound Quality : 10
I give this pedal a ten out of ten for sound quality. I use a Carvin DC-127C and usually a silverface twin reverb, although I haven't been able to use it with this pedal. I tried this through my friend's Fender 4x10 Hot Rod, and it completely blows the amp's distortion channel out of the water. It sounds better and is quieter and is more usable than the onboard distortion. No comparison. And it let's the great clean channel of the amp shine. Very quiet, very versitile. I can get some sounds of my favorite artists with this, not all. I can nail the sound of some songs, but I really haven't tried much, becaise the pedal is good enough so that there is no need to copy someone elses tone.

I play blues and classic rock, and this is a great match! If it were stolen or lost, I would get another. When looking for a good, versitile OD/distortion, I tried many pedals, such as the Boss Blues Driver, the Jeckle and Hyde dual distortion pedal (I don't remember the company's name), the Peavy Dirty Dog, a few other Boss pedals, the Danelectro Daddy-O, a few fuzz pedals, and the Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal. The Peavy and Bluesdriver made the best impressions on me. The Peavy was designed with a simmilar goal in mind, it seems to me, it was very transparent and natural. The blues driver had a very versitile gain knob, and was very dynamic. It colored the tone too much, though. So eventually I narrowed it down to the Peavy and the Fulldrive. I think the Peavy was more versitile with two completely seperate channels and a couple other features, but the sound was not nearly as rich or musical as the Fulldrive.

How hard can an overdrive be to use? With every thing at 12 o'clock, It sounded great. For someone who is usually pretty picky about tone, I was easily satisfied with controls set at neutral levels. The manual is as good as the pedal, in that there are no spelling or grammatical errors, it was straightforward, and personal. (Thanks for writing it yourself, Mike) BTW, mine is a newer FM model.

Sound Quality : 10
I play a Les Paul Special (w/P100s) and an Am.Std. Strat through a late 70's Marshall MKII 50w, and a 412. I use the amp distortion (set to an ac/dcish crunch) i use lots of mids and bass and barely any treble. Most of my other stomboxes are pretty noisy when engaged in this setup. I purchased the Fulldrive partly because it was they quietest of all the overdrives I tried out that day. The fulldrive always sounds great. Period. Every guitar player should have this pedal. This sound quality, of course, is the principle selling feature. (Rather than it's good looks, true bypass, versatility, sturdyness, etc.)

Reliability : 6
The pedal always functions fine, with the exception of the knobs. I believe they should not be so easy to move. In fact I'm constantly bumping into the controls with my feet, knocking them out of position. For such a versatile pedal, the knobs should stay put. (Thank goodness the pedal usually sounds great under any settings.)

Pretty self-explanatory. Be sure to turn the volume knob all the way down before you pull it up for the compression cut feature-- the volume difference can be a suprise. The instruction sheet that came with it is well done and gives you Mr. Fuller's favorite settings and even suggests what types of batteries to use for best performance.

Sound Quality : 9
Mine is the newest version with the flat mids (FM) mod. This one is definitely a keeper, and I've been through A LOT of pedals since ditching my multi-effects box earlier this year. Other reviews on this list have compared the sound to overdrives such as the Ibanez Tubescreamer or Mesa/Boogie V-Twin. I have both of these and I feel that the Fulldrive2 fills its own nich and doesn't necessarily replace these other overdrives. The V-Twin has that unmistakable Mesa/Boogie sound and is used for singing leads (a la Santana) or heavy rythmic chunk (i.e. Kirk Hammett). The Tubescreamer (with TS-808 mod) gets that Texas blues/SRV sound that, and yes, has boosted mids and cut lows. As far as I'm concerned, the Fulldrive2 falls into the category of a "neutral" overdrive, that is it doesn't give you a recognizeable, trademark sound but instead takes the sound that you're already getting from your guitar and amp and simply overdrives in the most natural way possible. I use vintage type Marshall and Fender amps without master volumes. These sound heavenly when cranked up to their limits, but the nieghbors don't seem to care for this much :-) The V-Twin and Tubescreamer gave me great overdrive at bedroom levels, but sometimes I want to replicate that natural sound of the cranked amp without the added coloration of the other pedals. This is where the Fulldrive2 comes in. There's no artificial boost of the mids and it seems to become one with the guitar/amp combination I'm using. To top it all off, the true bypass is greatly appreciated, and I now consider this an essential feature of anything that comes between my guitar and its amp.

Seems very sturdy. Looking inside reveals a neat and professional looking circuit board and wiring scheme. My only qiestion is in regard to the footswitches. They are the smaller type that engage with a soft "click," as opposed to the clunky kind used by most manufacturers. Sometimes they feel a little spongy and I wish for the more positive feel of the older style switch.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven't had a reason to deal with them.

This pedal fills a much needed role I use it whenever I want to preserve the true sound of my gear. The quality and tone are second to none and I will not be selling or trading this pedal anytime soon. I'm really sold on Fulltone's products overall and have already purchased a Soul-Bender fuzz, which is also outstanding. I plan on getting a '69 Pedal and one of the new ChoralFlange pedals as soon as they're available. If I ran my own effects company, it would be just like Fulltone. They're pedals seem to read my mind and give me exactly the sounds and features that I'm looking for.

Well ladies and germs, I finally got my hot little hands onto ones of these "newer" versions of the famed Fulldrive 2. I bought mine back in '97, so this was the pre-Flat Mids version that I only new so well. I was really skeptical about this "newer" version, I thought "How could you improve on perfection?". But with my older version I did notice a big mid range hump when stepped on.

Let me tell you guys, if you want a pedal to preserve your original tone, this is the one! When you step on the pedal all you get is a "louder" version of your amp and a little grunt with it. This I use as my "clean" lead, now if you want more "hair" move on over to the "boost" and you got it, plus a little mid bump to put you over the wall.

I do have to agree that that this one inherently does lack the "hair" of it's predecessor. But this is a good thing, less cut means less ear bleeds in the audience. I am retiring my older one in favor of the new baby, but I'm not going to forget it or sell it. It's still a keeper. Maybe I'll have it modded to be both pre-FM and well...FM. And thats how I see it.

This is an update to my previous review. I had mentioned a flabby sound when using humbuckers with this unit. Mike Fuller saw my review and e mailed me about it. He offered to replace some components (JFET Transistors)that he believes will solve my dissatisfacion. All that I have to do is mail my unit to him and include a check for shipping and he will mod it for free. How many companies large or small do you know of that would respond to a customers needs so promptly when the customer didn't even contact them directly? Fulltone's customer service is peerless.

Four knobs. Two ways to use it--with or without comp-cut. In normal position, it's like a lovely distortion pedal to which you can add more overdrive and distortion with the other footswitch. Pull up the volume knob, and it's a volume-boost, which would be handy for gigs, as well as playing with other guys who are trying to drown you out because they don't like you. And, it's blue.

Sound Quality : 8
It sounds great. It's got a lot of versatility. And most importantly, it looks cool. If you have a multi-channel amp, you'll have a lot of sonic options, especially with the comp-cut. I play through a boogie, which obviously has a great palette of overdrive sounds, and the fulldrive2 basically doubles the number of good sounds I can get from my setup, including clean ones. It's shiny.

Reliability : 10
Tonight, I'm going to drop it out of my sixth floor window. It has a lifetime warranty. We'll see.

Mike Fuller responds to e-mails. He answers his own telephone. Because of this, folks seem to expect him to be their new buddy. They want to get into philosophical debates about part numbers and technical crap. I appreciate his bluntness, his terse answers, his cutting to the chase. It's a refreshing change from the BS approach one usually receives from the pony-tailed losers you typically find in a Sam Ash or Guitar Center. I don't need his validation, just his products.

Overall Rating : 8
If you have a good electric guitar, and a good amp, this box is a must. It is a core piece of gear. It has application for both studio and stage, and is completely transparent when switched off. All my other stompboxes are optional. This one is mandatory. It sounds great, and enables me to gig without multiple amps. And, I can use it and still get that straight-to-the-amp sound without compromising. If the comp-cut was footswitchable, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a nine. If it still works this well a year from now, I'd even consider giving it a ten, but since I've only had it about two months, I'll give it an eight. Nothing wrong with an eight. Based on this scale, Danelectro, Dunlop, DOD, would be lucky to get better than a five......

Easy to get a good sound, but you can tweak it and get great sounds. Overall, very easy to use. Mike Fuller gives you a couple of basic set up ideas in the manual. This is nice, but I think if you don't know the tone you are after you probably shouldn't be purchasing a $200 overdrive pedal.

Sound Quality : 10
Have a classis blues/rock set-up. SRV-Strat into '76 Twin or a '67 Bandmaster Head w/2-12 cabinet. Also use a Vox Wah and TS-9 (808-mod).
Very simple yet effective. I also have a PRS Custom 22 but the preferred guitar with this set-up is a Strat. Don't worry, the PRS sounds great with this type of set-up. I just prefer the Strat.
This unit is a phenominal piece of equipment that allows the user to capture the tone you have probably been looking for if you are a Blues enthusiast. The true bypass is the real deal. I can really tell the difference when comparing other pedals. This pedal gives you 2 basic sounds (actually 3,I'll get to that): 1. smooth overdrive, the inbetween tones that are hard to find. 2. A very full sounding, smooth medium gain, but very harmonic distortion that is to die for if you are searching for that classic rock tone. 3. There is also a comp/cut push pull switch on the volome knob that will knock your socks off if you aren't careful ! (this feature makes the pedal react like a Class A tube amp). This is awesome but you have to do some tweaking if you want apply this feature. You have to change this setting manually and during gigs it is somewhat impractical. Don't get me wrong, this is a feature I would rather have than not, it is that good. This pedal is also very quiet. Just an awesome sounding pedal.

Reliability : No Opinion
No opinion, because I think I was just unlucky. I'll have to wait and see. Had to send the first one back but I wasn't upset. The boost footswitch went bad. I bought the unit from Rock-City Music in Spokane WA. and they took good care of me. The unit they replaced it with was newer (dated 10/99) and had slightly different switches. By the way, each one of the units is signed and dated by Mike Fuller.

The dealer was great. Have not contacted Fulltone as of yet.

This pedal is a gret match for blues and classic rock. Been playing for a long time. But within the last ten years or so have become aware of the types of tones I want to achieve. I love Fender amps and I think they are a perfect match, along with a Strat, for this pedal. I am in the process of trying to find a 40w Blues Deluxe to make gigging a litle easier, the Twin is great but I want to scale down and make life a little easier. This pedal will make you late for work ! Trust me go out and buy one if you are serious about tone and have a clue as to what type of sound you want to get. I can't stress that enough. I have wasted a great deal of money searching for the right equipment. This pedal will make your other overdrive pedals seem like toys. (except for my TS-9, which I still truely enjoy).

There are a lot a settings for this unit. at first I did not like this pedal. I tried it with a hot rod deluxe, a boogie DC2. but the best sound is with a clark beaufort. but it sounds so good that I dont want to use up the tubes HAH so I use it with the hot rod deluxe and use this sound just about all the time to record with a cheap boombox(hey, the big shots write songs this way)

Now I can use this with any guitar, a tex mex strat and a jimmie vaughn signature strat. by the way these guitars are tremolo blocked and they stay in tune really really well, and I pull on em, use ernie ball 11's, movin on up next year to 12's when I can find a decent distributor for good strings. now this fulldrive just doesnt work for me on a low wattage amp. I use two different 2 12 spkr cabs and when I use the push pull comp feature (up) the tones LISPS. it sounds very crummy, so I usually leave it down and use volume up high, tone about 3 oclock, od at 12 oclock and dont use the boost. this gives a very satisfactory tone and I love it. can anybody give me some pointers on this thing as far as settings ? I would love figure out how to use this pedal better , but this comp cut thing is really eluding me, and I have been playing 30 plus years, billy gibbons style rock, new gospel Jesus rock and blues (yes, it exists). I like this pedal I have a morley jerry donahue pedal that really sucks out your tone, it means well but it just wont get it. so far this is the one for low volume blues rock.

This is the powdercoated blue one with the pull comp-cut. It is very easy to get good sounds out of this pedal provided that you choose the right gear to go with it. The manual is simple and straightforward but not alltogether needed as it is simple to set up just use your ears.

Sound Quality : 5
I was running this pedal between a strat and a super reverb and occasionally a tele. It yeilded sweet tones for blues and rock without the comp-cut engaged. With the comp-cut enabled it sounded excellent and could see a good use for it to brighten up the clean sound of a darker sounding amp ie: mesa boogie types. All was well till I put it to the test with a Les Paul and a PRS. With the comp-cut inactive single note lines sounded sweet and fat but I noticed that while playing chords on the low E string there was a flatulent sound as the chords were struck. I thought that the combination of guitar and amp may have been at play so I plugged into my mesa boogie maverick combo with 2x12 configuration. The same flabby sounds were present. So I plugged my PRS in and, although the single coil setting were sweet sounding, the same flabbiness appeared when striking lower register chords. There could be a problem with my pedal or the sound may just be the nature of this pedal I'm not sure. Had I only played this pedal with a strat this mark would be a ten. However I switch between a few guitars and dont like to have a floor full of pedals to trip on. So I am unsure if this pedal will stay in my rig or not.

I think I could depend on this pedal to gig without a backup

I play blues and rock and a little jazz and classical. I have played for 15 years. This pedal is perfect for blues and most rock. It compliments single coil pickups well and if you want that stevie ray tone its here to be had. It also has that boost mode to add that extra grit and/or volume for more rock type tones. If you plan on using a humbucking guitar check it out with one before you purchase this pedal. Like I stated before it could be that my pedal has a fault that is causing the flabbiness. I'm not trying to complain I'm just telling it like it is.

Extremely easy to use! All info needed is provided in the short and to-the-point manual.

Sound Quality : 10
I use an 84 American Standard Strat through a 2x12 Fender Deville. The only other pedal I use (besides tuner and volume pedal) is a Fulltone Supertrem (highly recommended). The tone is amazing! If you want to preserve the tone that you have and add gain, this is the pedal for you. With true bypass switching the pedal will not color your tone at all in the off position. I like to use the pedal in the comp-cut setting because of the awesome volume boost it offers. I catch myself attempting all my "Stevie" riffs once I hit the boost. With my strat in the neck position any blues man would be impressed. My only gripe would be for a bit more gain, but after all, it is only an overdrive pedal, so just turn it up. I friend of mine plays a LP Custom through a Boogie combo with the Fulldrive and the pedal is amazing in that context as well. The pedal is not noisy at all. The only other OD pedal that I would even recomend would be the Clon Centaur, but this pedal really stands out as an incredible device. If you play in a situation where you need to get an overdriven guitar sound at low volumes, you need to own a Fulldrive2.

Reliability : 10

The Fulldrive to is one of the easiest pedals to use! Within 2 minutes after taking it out of the box I was using it. All of the info I needed was in the instruction manual.

Sound Quality : 10
This has got to be the best overdrive pedal in the world. It has a thick, warm, harmonic tone thats great for any type of music you play. For my main blues and funk setup I play my 69 cs strat-MXR Dyna Comp-Fulldrive2-DD5 Boss delay-Fender Twin Reverb amp. When it comes to my heavier rock setup I use a Marshall 74 JMP 50w head, the Fulldrive2, and usually my 88 HM strat. This is (personally) the best sounding distortion w/out getting a cruddy sound. With this pedal and different settings on my JMP I can get an Eric Johnson to Joe Satriani to heavy shred metal tone without getting a cheap thrashy processy tone. Instead I get the sound of the Fulldrive2 though a Fender Twin Reverb, but more gain and richer harmonics.

Reliability : 10
I would have put a 9 here because one of the switches went bad, but after talkin to Mike and getting them replaced this pedal is unstoppable(unless the power goes out and I dont have any bateries). When I get some more cash I'll probably buy another one, but as far as reliability goes I don't need a backup.

Mike Fuller has got to be the nicest and most ingenious guy in the world! On my Fulldrive2 one of the ddpt switches went bad and after talking to him I got both replaced for a great price! He must have apologized 20 times. He is a very smart guy and knows the sound and qualities he wants from his products and does a hell of a good job doing it!

Lots of effects
Studio-Tascam 488 mkII 8 track portastudio/Alesis sr-16 Drum Machine/Alesis Point7 monitors & RA100 PA/Tascam 302 dual tape deck 2 track recorder
If my Fulldrive was stolen I'd buy another as soon as I could. I've compared it to tons of ather overdrives and by far its got the biggest, thickest, and warmest tone ever! I would love it if Mike made a pedal that sounded just as good as the Fd2 but with more gain(distortion). This way I wouldn't have to combine it with another amps preamp gain and I could play it through the twin and get just as good of a sound.

4 knobs: volume*, tone, drive, boost. The volume is a push/pull pot which when pulled, the pedal can be used as a clean boost (all other knobs work the same eay except the drive will not distort the sound as much). 2 buttons: bypass, boost. The bypass allows you to, well, bypass the unit all together. The boost activates the boost channel which the boost knob sets the amount of extra volume desired (the extra gain is preset). 2 LEDS show the mode (regular or boost) and the status (bypass or on). Basically, just dial in the sound you're looking for and you're there.

Sound Quality : 9
I was using a Blade T2 (tele style, 2 single coils) and now I'm using an Ibanez Custom Shop (2 Humbuckers). The amp I'm using is a Fender Hot Rod Deville (2x12). This unit sounds great with both guitars. It's not noisy at all and the tone it produces is very natural; doesn't color the sound of you guitar or amp, just adds drive. It pretty much sounds good in any setting. I don't use the volume boost much though (volume knob pulled). It can get that heavily saturated Santana tone or that violin-like, smooth Eric Johnson tone. I use it after a pan pedal and I also like the sound of 50% pan to the FD2 and 50% pan to just clean (or 50% FD2, 50% Tech 21 Tri-OD). It works with other pedals very well. I'm reluctant to give it a 10 in this catagory because it only gives overdrive (much like that of an Ibanez Tube Screamer except hotter) but will not enter the distortion zone - not completely versatile.

While mine was being repaired, I borrowed another from a store to use for a gig. Please take note that every FD2 unit sounds just a little different. I did the settings a little different and I was all set. But it was just a little different. I guess while it's transparent, it does have a little character to each of the units - something that's very hard to describe!

Reliability : 8
I've only had one problem with it (pot going bad). Other than that, everything seems rock solid... from the steel construction to the heavy duty buttons. It's not a wimpy pedal and it's hand made but I guess every batch has a rotten apple and I got lucky. Along with true bypass, you can be sure it won't corrupt your tone on stage even if something happens to it.

Customer Support : 9
Mike Fuller is awesome! All this products come with a lifetime warrantee. I emailed him about the problem, I got a respond back the same day. I mailed the unit to him, he fixed it and mailed it back to me - no charge. The only thing was that it took a bit longer than I anticipated but personally I can understand since it's a small company that he's running (and he does everything).

Overall Rating : 10
I play a lot of different styles. This pedal suits almost everything I do. But I have to use another pedal to get the heavier distorted tones. I've been playing 11 years and this unit is the best drive pedal I've heard so far. I would definitely get another if something happened to it! I use it for blues, some rock, jazz type licks. I love the amount of sustain it gives in boost mode... great for solos. It's bigger than your average Boss or DOD pedal though so stage realty is a consideration. I tried to play a gig without it, I tried to substitute it with the "fender" channel of the Tech 21 Tri-OD... not even close!

At first i was worried that this pedal was only a blues guitarists pedal and that it wouldnt cut it for my crunch needs but i was wrong. This is the perfect overdrive pedal. Very transparent, beautiful sound. Perfect for blues and rock. I compared it with a hotcake, Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde, Rat, Dual Sound...this blows them all away with its incredible sound! I (try to) play blues, rock and this is the sound I've been looking for. I found the promised land of tone. From light to heavy OD, this does it better than anything else. I've had a other ODs,including the TS9(808) and this is by far better. The TS9 changed to tone too much (particularly the drive channel)and the Fulldrive didn't change it at all. If your happy with your original sound and want to enhance it, this is it. Sure it costs a little more, but it's worth it, it really is. If you can find this used, get it, even without hearing it, you will not be disappointed. It sounded better when I got home with it. From a range of 1-10, this is an 11!

Very easy to use. A big plus are the two stompswitches, allowing you to access two tones easily from one box.

Sound Quality : 9
The sound quality is great. The main thing I want to convey to those interested in buying this unit is that this is really an overdrive box. Nothing wrong with that, but don't expect thick fat fuzz sounds, or even epecially crunchy chords with this pedal only. If you use this pedal with an amp (I use a PA) that has some distortion capabilty then the combination will probably be fine. This pedal seems to excel in that area between no distortion at all and medium distortion. The sound quality is execellent.

(I own the older version) Fairly straight forward two stage OD pedal. True Bypass a plus. Mystery tone control take some finesse.

Sound Quality : 9
Setup - Strat Deluxe w/ Noiseless pickups or Guild Brian May Signature thru Dunlop Volume, Vox wah with Fulltone Clyde bypass (see web site) and mods, Fulldrive 2, Fender Reverb tank reissue, into the '64 Blonde Bandmaster head with Marshall 4x12 cab.
Fulldrive 2 - answers the question, where's the beef? Instead of cranking the Bandmaster to 10, the Fulldrive allows me to have that BIG MAMA sound at the stomp of a button, and the versatality when I don't need mama around. I use the uncompressed mode mostly, as it is super clean yet sweetly saturated. Low frequencies galore! Most of the OD pedals I tried sucked dry the rich body of the Bandmaster. Fulldrive 2 did it the least, adding it's own distinctive flavor.

Reliability : 8
Dependable. Box is tank-like. Buttons are fragile. Had to send unit back for stomp button failure. I've seen the newer ones and they have a new bigger style stomper. Seems better. When the battery starts to go, you know it quick.

As easy as falling off a log. If you need the manual you probably won't be able to read it. Controls are: volume, tone, overdrive and boost. The setting that comes in most useful to me is the push/pul volume pot. This almost completly cuts the compression and gives it a more Hendrixy edge, which is just what I am looking for. Two Footswitches, one for on/off and the other for the boost mode.

Sound Quality : 10
Best overdrive I have ever heard. The sound is sweet and tube screamer like in the one mode, and screaming distortion in the other. I run this with a really crap JCM900 Marshll but plan to buy a JMP soon. With newer amps the boost mode just increases overdrive, but on older style amps it boosts volume aswell. You can get almost any sound from this. From SRV to Trower/Hendrix. I heard that Trower uses this product, no wonder.

Reliability : 9
Built like a tank. built out of 16 gauge steel. Yes I would gig without a backup. Even though the swithces are a bit dodgy and the led's are only glued in, i 'm sure Mike would fix it if it broke.

Mike Fuller is great. I e-mailed him once and he replied within 2 hours.

I play blues & rock in the style of Hendrix/Trower. I am only 13 but have been playing for 4 years solid. The only thing I would change about htis peadls would be its boost mode(I would give it a separate volume mode) but apart from that it is the best of its kind. I have played Tube screamers (ts-8 &9) klon cenaturs, Carl Martins, Dunlops and Bosses but this beats the hell out of them all. They are in big demand, so expect to wait a few weeks for it (as I did) but it is certainly worth the wait. If it were stolen I would definatly buy another. I will soon be recieving a deja2 and a 70' pedal and have no worries about there being problems. For the ultimate overdrive, I don't think you could beat the Fulldrive2

I PLAY A G&L ASAT THROUGH THE FULLTONE AND A BUNCH OF Z. VEX STUFF INTO A MATCHLESS SC30. THIS UNIT IS NOT NOISY AT ALL. IT IS VERY ORGANIC SOUNDING. IT DOESN'T INTERFERE WITH THE SOUND OF YOUR AMP WHATSOEVER.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF THE BOSS BLUESDRIVER. IV'E HAD ONE SINCE THEY CAME OUT.THIS ONE KICKS ITS' ASS. THE BLUESDRIVER IS THE BEST OVERDRIVE FOR UNDER $100 THOUGH.(MY OPINION)BEFORE GETTING THIS I BOUGHT A KLON CENTAUR. IT DIDN'T REALLY WORK OUT FOR ME. I THINK THE KLON AND THE FULLTONE ARE THE TWO BEST OVERDRIVES AVAILABLE. THEY ARE JUST DIFFERENT. THE KLON HAS A REAL PRONOUNCED MID-HONK-GROWL SOUND TO IT.IT SOUNDS LIKE THE BACK IN BLACK GUITAR SOUND IN A WAY. VERY THROATY.(WHAT PEDAL AM I REVIEWING?)THE FULLDRIVE SOUNDED SO MUCH MORE LIKE MY GUITAR AND AMP. CLEANS UP PERFECTLY WHEN YOU PICK SOFTER. I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU HOW ORGANIC THIS SOUNDS.IT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE THE PERFECT AMP BREAKING UP. ALMOST LIKE THE MASTER VOLUME ON MY MATCHLESS BUT EVEN WARMER. THE REASON I TALK ABOUT THE KLON SO MUCH IS THAT FULLDRIVE VS.KLON HAS BEEN SUCH A BIG DEBATE. I THINK IT IS A WORTHLESS DEBATE. THEY ARE NOT ALIKE AT ALL. IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR SOUND, WHILE ENHANCING IT, THE FULLTONE IS FOR YOU. IF YOU WANT THE BIGGEST, MEANEST, MOST THROWN IN YOUR FACE SOUND, THE KLON IS PRABABLY FOR YOU. I REALLY FEEL MY SEARCH IS OVER. I'M STICKING WITH THIS ONE. HAVING THE X-TRA BOOST IS A HUGE PLUS AS WELL. IT'S LIKE GETTING TWO FOR ONE. OH YEAH, I USE THE COMP. CUT TOO. IT SOUNDS TOO TUBESCREAMERISH THE OTHER WAY

All the other reviews have this part covered...pretty easy to figure out.BUT there could be some improvements made..seperate knob for boost level and more tonal control.

Best OD pedal I've tried but maybe not the best around.I'm using with LP & Strat into Plexi RI & Marshall 4x12 w/greenbacks and it does sound great! The uncompressed boost setting is killer but could use a bit more dirt, but the problem may be that this pedal is supposed to sound best with amp right on the edge on break up, something a little tough with a 100 watt Marshall & still retain your hearing.True bypass its at least close enuf as far as I can tell. Now onto "REG" mode: seems to retain the sound of your guitar/amp as stated but for me at least a bit more EQ'ing (mid-boost)would be useful mostly for my Strat. If your 100% happy with your sound and just need more dirt/vol.you should be happy! But to my tastes a mild mid boost seems to 'bring out' the tone for lead work a bit IMO.I have an 'old'TS-9 an this does kick it's butt in some ways but I'll use both thank you! OD does sound quite natural, more so than the TS-9 but could use a touch more gain..also I really would like to be able to control boost vol better. If OD gain is cranked up 1/2 way or more the boost vol. can't give you that little extra for soloing. But nothing I've found can do it all and for what this pedal does it does it very well!

Looks sturdy inside...others seem trust Fulltone ...so they must know something ! I don't ever gig W/O back-up !!!! Give it a 9 unless it breaks.

Would like to have been able to try the Carl Martin 'Hot Drive & Boost and Visual Sounds "jeckyl & hyde" as I've read great things on both of these plus there both cheaper $135 & $109 resp.Plus both of these have the features I miss on FD2. namley EQ & seperate lead boost. If I ever get to try these two I'll do a report. But for now I'm quite happy with having my FD-2...Try it! beats all the Boss,DOD...and so on crap !

I am using strats, fender amps. No noise. The effect is pretty strong. I can't get the sounds of any artist, just the artist who uses fulldrives like Robin Trower etc. I like the tone with the gain mid or past mid same with the second channel. I wish it was designed like the jeckyll and Hyde where you had best of both worlds. One side ts808 and the other Marshall distortion. The second channel doesn't sound dramatically different. But the tone is original and it sound like a much mid was added to this pedal and thats what gives its own sound. The sustain isn't too great to me. Or maybe I can't get the sustain from this particular pedal. I have no problems with my 808 or Jeckyll but maybe its just me, I don't know. Overall the sound is better than a Boss pedal and not good as a TS808. IT does have a great clean boost channel and if I was to keep it I would use that portion only. When I compare or rate a pedal I do the ask the following, Does it go clean when I take all the gain off, When I lower the gain really low is it still smooth(like an 808) this one didn't do that for me, sustain is it there?, guitar tone is it there?, noise, switch noise, test out all power sources and take the best one for tone, battery life, who cares!( I would put new batteries in ever show.), Maybe I forgot some others but those are the main questions I ask my self. There hasn't been a pedal yet that I tried that can beat my 808 so I happy with that. Hell, it was around for 20 years and man its still going like the energizer bunny!

I play my originals and blues for a personal hobby. Definitely a good tone for blues. If it was stolen I wouldn't buy one again because its not my sound. Yes I compared this to my TS808, TS9 original, TS9 modd analog mike, Jeckyll and Hyde, OD-808 etc, etc but its not my cup of tea. I don't follow hypes or trends. I go with my ears period.

Easy as it gets. It's a stompbox after all.

Sound Quality : 10
My problem previously has been that I love the basic sound of my guitar/amp rig but EVERY pedal I've have tried colors the tone toward the pedals own orientation.Even my beloved TS9 colored the tone too much.Blues Drivers and many others were much worse than the TS9.One gets what one pays for I guess.
My rig is a Strat/Bassman Re-Issue with some modifications. The Strat used to be a Lone Star( and still has the SD humbucker) but the neck and mids are now Lindy Fralin Vintage Strat replacements. This gave me more clarity, took out the annoying mids that the Texas Specials had, and more definition. The Bassman has been retubed a number of times with much experimenting with tubes. The preamp and rectifier changes have given me more sag and again, better definition. With a little help from a Boss RV-3 reverb and a Boss GE-7 EQ my rig, with no pedals, and at volume 6/7 on the amp is the beautiful blues tone I strive for. The problem is that the venues I play at are usually lower volume than a continual 6/7.And I do like the availability of extra OD over and above the amp tone. Enter the pedals..they all change the tone at every volume. BUT the Fulldrive2 doesn't.
On its first channel the Overdrive maintains the tone of the guitar/amp almost perfectly. Its the pedal version of the Fralin pickups with great clarity and definition. Also most pedals don't clean up well as you turn down the guitar volume. Even the TS9 didn't clean up well. The Fulltone EVEN ON THE BOOST CHANNEL still keeps the guitar/amp tone (yes even with more overdrive) AND still cleans up nicely when the guitar volume is turned down. This thing is amazingly flexible.
Now is this for everybody. No. I'm a blues player in the tonal range of Otis Rush and Buddy Guy.Its perfect for me. BUT, the critical thing is that I like the basic tone of my guitar/amp. It needed volume enhancement not tonal enhancement. If you're a Les Paul/Marshall rock player and you like your rig by itself you'll love this pedal too. Or Gretsch and AC30 or your Danelectro and Park (if you REALLY like that). But you get the idea. If want your guitar amp to sound radically like something else get a Blues Driver, a Death Metal or something. The Fulldrive won't help you.

Reliability : No Opinion

Also don't know yet.I will say one thing. Because its expensive and in demand they're a pain in the ass to locate and buy without waiting weeks. But I also must say, its worth it.

Again ,if you like your rig this is the only pedal to buy. And even if you don't blues, roots, classic rock players will like it too.But your Fender on Fender won't do you justice with the Fulldrive2, if you're in an Aerosmith cover band. Me, I love this pedal!

This unit is the best thing I've ever purchased for my setup. I like simple things and this couldn't be any easier to get a great tone out of. I replaced a my V-Twin with it and with all due respect to the boys at Mesa..this thing kicks their butt.

I use it with my Tom Anderson Cobra and Flextone 60W combo and even though it's a modeling amp the Fulldrive does it's magic with it as well. I'm going to try it with a tube amp as well. The others explained the controls in detail I can only say that with the push/pull volume adds a whole new dimension to this unit. It really brigtens up your sound. I've been after Ian Moore's tone for a long time and this has it.

I play mostly modern blues, a little progressive stuff. I've been playing for 18 years and this is the best tone I had in a long time. I usually have one amp at a time, I don't like to jump back and forth between amps ( that's why I got the Flextone which is the best thing for me) I mostly play for pleasure. The Fulldrive has a very musical feel to it and it really adds a new dimension to my playing. Having that long and controllable sustain and drive at my disposal really makes me want to play more. I could hardly put it down, just played for hours. Lastly I'd like to thank Tommy at Guitarville in Seattle. He was very helpful on the phone and shipped it to me to Atlanta overnight for a very reasonable price. Take my word for it: This is the best $200.00 you will ever spend if you like TONE. Very easy. I feel that this pedal has been so documented in this area I can not add any thing of great value exept to say that mine is one of the newer #FM pedals and has the Fulltone 3PDT swiches. I find none of the bugs concerning the volume and tone that were said to haunt the previouse versions. I find the one very useful as it does not coulor the sound but just highlights it (or not).

Sound Quality : 10
Every thing has been said. This pedal is all about control. You get the sustain and all the control you ever wanted at your finger tips (literaly, all you have to deal with is the guitar its like telepathy). I used to use a boss blues driver(oh my I dont know what I was thinking!)I wish some one had told me about htis long ago. I have been playing like crazy kcant put the guitar down, this pedal finaly gave me the sound I was looking for (THAT TONE and the SUSTAINnnnnn...)It also realy improved the sound of all the other effects I had before it in the effects chain (wah and Fulltone Octafuzz) especialy the octafuzz it realy screams but smooth now like the hendrixy kind of guitar in pain scream. The wah also became more vocal and smooth and I can get all the tone I need now at muchlower volume (I dont have to wait intil the neighbors are all on vacation).

I would never recomend buying any piece of equipment without hearing it first, but this pedal is hard to get a hold of, much less try out before buying. Almost every one buys it over the phone or net(thiey sell like hot kakes and are always out of stock most places have waiting list).I can truly say BUY IT you wont be dissapointed. Plug up and dial in! If you're even remotley familiar with getting good tones from a TubeScreamer, then you will be able to set the knobs in roughly the same positions here, and get similiar but MUCH BETTER sounds! Minus one point for the pull-botton feature on the volume, which turns off the compression and allows for a cleaner gain-boost. Since I will rarely ever use this feature (maybe some chicken-pickin'), it doesn't bother me, but if you wanted to go back-and-forth between this feature, it would be very difficult to match volumes.

Sound Quality : 10
As far as I'm concerned, this is the finest overdrive / smooth distortion pedal in history! It does everything the TS-808-advocates claim the TS will do, but far better. The overdrive is more organic, and the boost channel gets a higher-gain, yet natural classic-sounding distortion. For my use, the overdrive is perfect for twangy, blues tones, and the boost provides an excellent lead and/or rhythm sound for anything besides high gain distortion (as in Van Halen or King's X). Another obvious advantage to this pedal over the TubeScreamers is its True Bypass. My old TS was the first or second pedal in my chain, so my signal was significantly weakened by the time it hit my amp. Now, I'm one step closer to having my entire chain true bypassed(need to rig my Crybaby still). If you're a fan of the "idea" of the classic TS, but you've always wanted a little bit more, this rather pricey pedal is well worth your immediate purchase!

Reliability : No Opinion
Mine's brand new, but I will say that it's made very durably and Fulltone already has a reputation for reliability.

Customer Support : No Opinion
My only direct contact with Fulltone was when I found a diagram for converting old wah pedals to true bypass. I had begun following the directions, when I noticed my model wasn't exactly like the one in the diagram. I called the number on the web page, and Mike (the owner) answered it himself. He was very helpful, and I was quite impressed that he took the call. This company is small enough and has enough integrity to be what I wished every company could be - HELPFUL!

Overall Rating : 10
I play a Fender Strat with Lace Sensors into a '63 Bassman amp. I play large doses of Texas-style blues and classic rock, as well as some heavier rock (NOT GRUNGE!), and I also play guitar for my church (more of a chorused clean sound most of the time). This pedal is a perfect fit! It allows the tone of my Fender equipment to stay true, with the accent of smooth, warm overdrive and distortion. If you like Grunge, or you're into the Metal Zone sound, then please stay away from this pedal. But if you've always wanted your guitar to sing with warm sustain, belt out the blues with attitude, and crunch without being thin, THIS IS YOUR THANG!!

This is an overdrive pedal about the size of two Boss pedals side by side. It has four knobs - from left to right: Volume (this can be pulled for a non compression mode), tone, drive and boost, and it has two foot switches. The left has a green led and turns the pedal on, the right has a red led and the pedal is in boost mode with the led lit or normal mode with it off. A nice feature of the pedal is that the boost led stays lit when the pedal is by-passed so you know what you're getting when you switch it on. It came with a manual which had some suggested settings and explains everything for the ones who can't figure it out for themselves. This is an easy pedal to use and ALL settings are usable.

Sound Quality : 9
This is a nice pedal. It is an overdrive pedal and generally won't give you metal crunch and gain, but if you're wanting nice sustain and full singing lead tones, this is the pedal for you. I'm playing a Japanese Fender Tele through a Boss CS3 sustain into the Fulldrive into a Fender Blues deVille. In the loop I'm running a Boss DD3.
I basically use this setup in two ways. I either run my amp clean and use the Fulldrive and the sustain for my distortion, or I use the overdrive channel on the amp, turn the Fulldrive volume all the way up and pulled out, which is the non compression mode and gives a lot more gain. The first of these set ups is quite versatile - I've got clean with everything off; slightly dirty with the Fulldrive on; more dirty, more sustain and more volume with the sustain and the Fulldrive; even more dirt, more sustain and more volume with just the boost mode on the Fulldrive; and then kick in the sustain with the Fulldrive in boost mode and there's even more of everything, nice singing lead tones. The second of these set ups is not so versatile and I really just use it to put my amp into maximum overdrive, lots of crunch and gain - pretty ugly really.
No matter how I use the pedal, it is very quiet. There is a little bit of hum but my guitar is fitted with all single coils and most of the hum is just a slight amplification of that.
It would be nice if it had seperate tone and volume controls but it would end up being pretty cramped for space. As it is at the moment, the knobs are nice and big, and easy to turn with a foot.

Reliability : 10
This thing is built nice and solid. I would have more faith in it than my Boss pedals as far as construction goes. I have only had it for a couple of weeks, but I don't see there being any problems with it. I would and do gig with out a backup.

Customer Support : 9
My only contact with Mike Fuller has been via email prior to getting the pedal. He was always helpful and his replies would come back over night.

Overall this is a great pedal. I actually like playing Pink Floyd stuff and some originals. This isn't so good for the Pink Floyd stuff as David Gilmour's sound is much more distorted. But, I really like it for solo's in my own songs and I think it will be very useful when I get a higher gain distortion pedal, for adding some smooth, rich, cream to my sound.
Yes I would buy it again if this one went missing.

This is a followup to my previous review primarily intended to pass on some subjective impressions of the newer "Flat Mids" Full Drive 2 (identifiable by the "FM" serial number) with the older model.
I received a newer (1 month old) Flat Mids FD2 in a trade and decided to do a head-to-head shootout with my older FD2. Note that my older pedal was bought in 2/98 and does not use the latest FET nor does it have the re-designed PCB (aka, Flat Mids mod).
Executive Summary: I like the older version better.
Test Info: G&L ASAT-3 into my pedal board into Top Hat Club Royale set at "recording/bedroom practice" level.
Initial Pedal Settings: Volume=11:00, Tone=12:00, OD=11:00, Boost=12:00
Pros:
1) FM pedal did have more transparent qualities. I liked the compressed/non-boosted setting better on the FM pedal. Definitely more tube-like (but not much more, the older pedal sounded very good as well).
2) FM pedal Tone control did seem to be more musical as the filter res freq was clearly changed to a higher freq. It behaves much more like a TS-808 Tone control - very musical until about 85% of range where it gets very bright and (IMHO) a tad thin. Older FD2 had (IMHO) much less usable range - could get kind of boinky. I was able to set the FM Tone control to about 2:00, whereas I tended to leave the older Tone control set at 12:00.
3) FM pedal seemed to have less gain overall in all settings. In compressed/boost mode, I had to dime the newer pedal Boost control to get approx the same gain as the old pedal set at 12:00 (mid point).
4) Fast run note articulation was noticably better with the FM pedal. I had to do somewhat more damping and muting and with the older pedal to keep runs from muddying up. However, fast shred stuff is a miniscule part of my overall style ('cause I basically suck at it). My fast stuff tends to be more "country oriented" with less distortion (clean or semi-clean). My distortion work tends to be the more "singing" Mike Campbell-esque stuff.
Cons:
1) The compressed/boost setting is much better on the older pedal. I am seriously into musical singing feedback. I could get the older pedal to sustain indefinitely on notes from open E to G (5th fret/4th string). The FM pedal seemed to run out of gas on any notes above E (2nd fret/4th string).
Midrange content is a well known ingredient of this singing feedback type of sound (Zappa was known to mod his guitars to provide more midrange for this exact reason).
For me, I feel that the older FD2 is a better mix of tones. Sure, the compressed/non-boosted tone has a tad more midrange, but that's not always a bad thing in a mix. I've found that I always need a tad more midrange in a band mix than I think I do. That nice scooped Hi-Fi sound in my practice environment sounds thin with a whole band.
I don't find the enhanced midrange of the older FD2 to be "unmusical" at all. Although, I can definitely see why the majority of players might prefer the newer version.
Bottom line, I think this just underscores the difficulty of making one pedal that will please all players. I still think that either of these pedals is fantastic. Personally, I just wouldn't rush to have this mod done if, like myself, you feel that the older pedal was perfect just the way it was, especially if musical feedback is a substantial part of your sound. The amount of change is perhaps 10% - 15% of the overall sound, but (IMHO) it can be an important 10% - 15%.

Overall Rating : 10
I still that either of these pedals is the best overdrive pedal I've personally ever played. I now have one of each and don't plan to sell either one - ever (that's sayng something for me).

I have to tell you that I have been trying to find MY sound for years. Now, I have MY sound. I was also very sceptical about "another overdrive" This is the ultimate, I've owned many, (Tube Drivers, Tubesters, Daddy O's, numerous Boss, etc.) The only complaint I had, was there wasn't quite enough distortion, but I give this a 10 anyway, because it sounds great no matter how much distortion you use, and is extremely versatile. Definately not for metalheads. I'm running with numerous strats (mostly Lonestars, or Am. Stand. with Tex. Spec.) through numerous Fender amps. All I can say is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! I love it so much, I'm getting another for more tonal possibilities.

I play rock/blues similar to Ian Moore on his first cd. Ian is a big time user of Fulltone products, I've seen his setup, and he's showed me himself. This is the sweetest sounding overdrive for this kind of music. Possibilities are endless. I have used numerous overdrives before, and still do on occassion, but must say that the Fulldrive2 is the key to my sound. I was hesitant to buy anoter overdrive, but if you are sketchy, or thinking about buying this pedal, do yourself a favor and get it. If you have any questions about this pedal, email me and I will help you as best as I can. This rules!!!!!

This pedal is idiot proof, if you can't figure it out in five minutes, don't quit your day job! There are two channels; A for moderate overdrive, B (boost) for more saturated, compressed overdrive. Controls are: volume, tone (presence), overdrive, and boost. It's simple to set up two useable sounds and then switch between them. With your amp set clean you get three sounds at the flick of a switch, clean chimey from the amp, light break up from the first channel on the Fulldrive (think blackface Fender) then, more saturated with the boost from the Fulldrive's second channel(think early Boogie, Marshall). I've used it now for two months on weekend gigs, people come up to me on breaks asking how I'm getting THAT tone. I previously used a Rat, Real Tube, SansAmp GT2, Boss Dual Overdrive, TS9, TS808 etc. They're all retired at this time, I wish I'd bought the Fulldrive a long time ago and saved my money. This pedal lets your notes "breathe", uncluttering the soungd of your guitar. When you bend notes, the Fulldrive holds it letting you control the sustain of the note. With this pedal you hear the original note; it's lightly cicled by the Fulldrive's musical overdrive. A good way to try dist./overdrive pedals is to set your amp up so you're facing the center of the speaker, listen for shrillness, odd-ordered harmonics. When I did this with the Fulldrive2 all I heard were sweet tones, that fattened up the sound. Save your bucks and buy this pedal, especially if your into Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, early Clapton, SRV, or Jimmy Vaughan. This a tone miester's pedal.

Sound Quality : 10
I use this pedal with a Fender Big Apple Strat and a G&L Asat Special through a Mesa Boogie Maverick 112 combo amp. Noise is practically non-existent with this pedal. I find the quality of both channels inthis pedal to be excellent alon with the option of usin the "de-comp" feature built in to the volume knob (via a pull pot) you can use the Fulldrive as a volume boost with the compression taken out. This is great for slamming the input of your amp for "power amp" type distortion/overdrive.

No problems thus far, seems to be built very sturdy. I use it without a backup

I play in an all purpose band and this pedal allows me to go from Blues to Rock N'Roll to Jazz with ease. I'v ebeen playing for 34 years in bands and as a soloist (classical guitar, steel string instrumentalist) and use a variety of equipment for these purposes. The Fulldrive2 is in my pedalbord which goes as follows: Boss CS3 (compressor), Fulltone Deja Vibe, Fulltone Fulldrive2, Danelectro Echo, Boss CE5 Chorus, Boss DD5 digital delay.

I traded this even-up for a TS-9 that I modded to 808 specs.
I'm sure u are all familiar with it by now. If not, 2-button - bypass and boost, 4 adjustments - volume, tone, drive, boost, 2 indicators - bypass, boost.
As far as easy to use....well... i haven't quite figured out the first switch and it's associated LED yet. The Bypass LED is on when it's NOT bypassed, and off when it IS bypassed!!!! I thought an indicator was used to denote when something is on??? This Boost is that way!
If u changed the words printed on the case to "Distortion" instead of "Bypass" it would all make sense.
Tone control... Flat response (no boost / no cut) is at the 4:00 position when it should be at 12:00. Very little room and very little boost for treble. Basically no boost at all for bass...just treb cut, and small treb boost.
Volume control... Unity gain is at 8-9 o'clock position when it should be at 12:00. Wayyyy too much gain here. If this is used with some solid-state amps, or used as a direct into recording gear, without input protection diodes, this may be too much input voltage and may smoke the inputs...especially if non-compressed - boost mode is selected.
Drive control - Pretty good range. This is not intended for metal/thrash/hi-distortion stuff. Ranges from slight edge to say "5" on a 5150 or a marshall stack... maybe not even that much. For my tastes, it is a perfect amount.
Boost control - allows u to go from drive setting, to an even higher level of distortion....although if u dime the drive, the boost doesn't really do anything for u. BEWARE... in the non-compressed mode... this can be EXTREMELY (and dangerously) loud. There needs to be some sort of protection against this high of a voltage output!

Sound Quality : 10
I can't say enough about the tone of this pedal. I've used and modded them all, over the years. This has the best tone of any distortion/overdrive i've used.
Try Vol @ 9:00, Tone @ 5:00, Drive @ 10:00, and Boost off, with a hum in the neck position thru the clean channel of a Twin or a class A amp....EXCEPTIONAL! I've found myself getting lost for hours with this tone...VERY nice tone!
Singles out of phase with drive @ 8:00 makes an excellent country/blues even chicken-pickin kind of tone with great sustain.
Hums with Drive dimed are totally Carlos.
I found that the pedal was very very quiet. Very impressive.

Having designed pedals and things for 20 years myself, I looked into Mikes work. Very well done. The powder painted chassis looked good and was very solid. Construction techniques were excellent.
I can't comment on the quality of components used, as the entire circuit board was coated with epoxy to protect Mikes circuit design from being copied. (Mike, that's what patents are for!)
From what i could see, the pots were dual-arm bifurcated wipers which will ensure noise-free adjustments for a very long time. The switches feel cheesy and weak, but I checked them out and they are solidly constructed. You should remove the black buttons on the tops of the switches as they won't last very long anyway.
The LEDS are hot-melt glued to the chassis which i thought was kind of cheesy. If u step on them with hard soled shoes...they could be pushed right thru the chassis. I replaced them with metal housing versions that shroud the LED in a metal bezel. Works good - last long time!
It's lucky that you can simply turn the rubber feet to unscrew the screws that hold the chassis together, when u need to change the battery. If I had to dig for an an allen wrench to open that thing on stage....I'd have sent it back! As it goes, it is fairly easy to open it up. Batterly life seems to be very good too! (TS-9's I've modded to 808, don't seem to last more than 2 nights of work on one new battery!)
I have gigged with this quite a few times since i bought it, and i'm not worried about taking a spare.

I e-mailed Fulltone and asked about the Tone problem and the volume problem. They e-mailed me back right away saying that i had an early version and that there was an "upgrade" that solved that problem....
Oh,.. and it would only cost me $50 to get it!!!
Does this sound like software you've regrettably bought in the past!!! The cost to buy it was cheap....and the upgrades kill you! Ahhhhh marketting people....don't ya love em! (I put them right up there with lawyers and chiropractors)
Anyway, I found them to be very prompt at getting back to me and helpful (albeit trying to sell me something more!) I asked if I could do the upgrade myself, and they flatly said no... (unlike Peavey, or Crate, or Marshall even helping u thru an upgrade.)

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing since 1964 and have been in bands since 1970. I play mostly blues, R+B, and R+R. I'm also a BSEE and BSME and have designed analog/linear electronics for 20 years.
Mike did an excellent job on this box.... period. Mikes background is in music, not Engineering, whichs makes for a great sounding product, not a high-tech wonder machine. And for what i'm looking for...it is a superb fx unit.
The sound isn't sterile, as many are. It is reminiscent to a NE570 compression circuit, with a J-FET or Bi-FET front-end, and very good filtering without coloring. From a tube standpoint, it's quite like an old VOX AC or a Fender Deluxe on 10, with a master volume on 2. Very smooth and believable!
I generally use the Fulldrive in front of either a Carvin MTS 3212, a Crate VC Class A or a '67 Twin SF for bigger clubs, and a Peavey Classic 30 or Deluxe for smaller places. I've used the Fulldrive thru all of them and thru a Roland Blues Cube 60, a JC55 and even an old Ampeg B-15N....
On the clean channel of each amp....it sounds excellent!!!
If they would have offered me a free upgrade or even allowed me to upgrade it myself, i would have given 10's to every category in this review. As it sits, it looks like the little guy with a great idea, got sucked up in the world of big bucks and greed....and that's not a slam.... happens all the time.
I'd buy this pedal (with the upgrade...lol) again in a second. I know a good thing when i hear one....this IS one!

This is the best sounding overdrive pedal I have ever played. It doesn't have any noise and it doesn't load your signal down when not used(true bypass). I have a Strat through a '68 Twin Reverb and it sounds awesome. I tried it next to a Tube Screamer and it is 10x better sounding.

Great overdrive can take you as far as you want to go without ruining your tone. I used a strat with a 2X12 Fender DeVille Amp and I can dial up a multitude of overdrive. I like the dirty clean sound the best. Makes your guitar sound crystaline when you back off on the volume.

Great job there is no overdrive in comparison to this. I would rather fight than sell this pedal and I am a peaceful man. I play blues/rock/other and it is perfect for my sound. I would define this purchase a great success and wouldn't bat an eyelid at getting another Fulltone effect.

This Product has four knobs, Volume, Tone, Overdrive, and Boost. for most people it will be very easy to get a nice overdriven tone out of this box, and the boost is a nice touch for a more hard edge, I use it mainly for a hot lead channel.

Sound Quality : 9
The sound rating is a little low because I have tried it through some amplifiers and it doesn't sound as good. I like it alot with my PRS custom 22, I usually never use the boost with humbuckers, but it really works wonders with my custom shop strat. I can get almost any type of blues, classic rock tone that I need out of this box.
I have tried it through a couple of solid state fender amplifiers(red knob chorus style) and found the tone not quite as pleasing, a little harsh. But it works extremely well with tube amplifiers. I have played it with a '65 BF Super Reverb and it almost always sounded great to every one I play with. But recently I purchased a Mesa/Boogie Blue angel amp, and this box works great with this amp and eiter of the two above metioned guitars. I can get a great Chicago or Texas style blues out of this combo almost effertlessly.
There is one thing about the tone contol, about four o'clock on the dail their seems to be a jump to accent the higher frequencies, it's not huge but it seems that all the way up until then you get a nice warm tone, and then it seems to get bright to fast. Maybe I'm just hearing things. You might want to check it out?

Reliability : 10
I have used this box for almost a year and a half, and have had no problems with it except for the occasional forgetting to change the battery.

I have e-mailed the guys at Fulltone about upgrading my box to the new style with the push/pull circuit, and I received a response within a half an hour.
And according to what I was told he has great turn around times.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall this pedal is my personnal favorite distortion type pedal I have ever used. If it were stollen I would purchase one again in a heartbeat!
This pedal does blow away my Tube-Screamer reissue, but my pedal is stock as compared to some people who have the TS-808 mod.
I've had the other guitar players I play with try this box, with a Laney amplifier( I can't recall model), and also his '66 BF Super Reverb, with and Ibanez AS-80, and an Older model Gibson SG and say how nice this pedal is.
If you are in the market for a good distortion box put this one on your list and give it a try.

Very easy to use, the owner's manual gives good starting points. Four knobs make it simple (but does take a little tweaking to find right tones).

Sound Quality : 10
I'm using this with a Fender Lonestar, a Rivera BM60-212, and a reissue '59 Bassman, and I have to say not a lot of noise, unless you have the distortion all the way up. After playing this unit for 6 months, I've put away my TS-9, this is exactly the sounds (blues, Stevie Ray) I was looking for. The clean boost is so transparent, but the bell like tones from the Texas Specials ring beautifully (great for Lenny Breu harmonics. The overdrive / volume boost can be LOUD (the manual comes with a warning)but extremely smooth.

Reliability : 10
This thing is built like a tank, once I have the funds I'm getting a second (not so much for backup, but to run together - oooohhh I can just hear my amps crying "uncle" nw).

For playing blues through a Bassman this pedal rules! Through the Rivera on the "M" channel with the Slavemaster engaged I've got Eric Johnson's lead tone down. This pedal is exactly what I was looking for, wihtout having to radically alter the tone of my guitar and amp combanations. It's enogh to push it over the top, with out destrying or mudding the signal. I would highly recommend this pedal to any one looking for a boost in their tone and sound.

Like most stompboxes, the Fulldrive is very easy to use. It has four knobs (output, tone, overdrive & boost) and two footswitches (on/off & boost). The boost knob works with the boost switch and provides a second footswitchable distortion sound with more gain and sustain. Also, the output knob can be pulled to engage a "no-compression" mode. Some people have said that they would like the no-comp mode to be footswitchable, but I can't imagine why -- you really need to adjust the knobs when going to that mode because the output will invariably be *much* higher than the normal mode. I have the latest version with the sky blue casing. I'm giving it an "8" in the ease of use category since it does have a couple more functions you have to learn how to use (compared to most overdrive pedals) and it takes a bit of experimentation to find the really optimal knob settings for each mode.

Sound Quality : 10
This thing is simply awesome. Its distortion sound is very smooth and musical -- not at all harsh or grainy. In terms of the amount of gain, the overdrive mode is basically in the Tube Screamer range, while the boost mode goes beyond that a ways (Fulltone claims 3X more gain, but its *sounds* like less than that). I find the Fulldrive to be more transparent than a Tube Screamer -- not forcing its own sonic agenda on your guitar sound. The boost mode does provide more gain and sustain than the overdrive mode, but make no mistake, this isn't "high-gain" in the 90s sense of the words -- its not hard rock/heavy metal kind of distortion. If you dime the boost knob, its just a bit less gain than, say, Eric Johnson's lead sound.
The no-compression mode? Just think Fender blackface. More dynamic than the normal mode, reacting to picking dynamics and guitar volume changes much more dramatically. I've found that if I just put it in the boost/no-compression mode with fairly high output settings and run that into a clean tube amp, I can get all the distortion variations I need for blues and classic rock by just using the volume control on my guitar. Very cool.
At high gain settings, it is a bit noisy -- not as bad as some overdrives, but worse than others. Its not unreasonably noisy though -- its definately in the liveable range.

Reliability : No Opinion
I've had it for less than 6 months so I feel its premature to assign a rating, but I can say this: Its built very ruggedly and the components are top quality. The circuit is hand-wired and incredibly simple. I gig without back up for it all the time.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Mike Fuller is very opinionated. But when it comes to backing up his products he's reputed to be completely on the ball. I haven't had to have my Fulldrive serviced, but if I do, I'm comfortable that it will be handled professionally.

Overall Rating : 10
I bought the Fulldrive to go with a couple Fender and Marshall amps for blues and classic rock. Its been a real winner with every guitar and amp I've tried. In fact, I've used it on several gigs with a Fender HR Deluxe that I bought for transportability reasons and the combination of that amp with the Fulldrive II just sounds better than it has any right to given the really reasonable amount of money invested. It honestly sounds darn near as good as a blackface Fender that I have -- and its alot easier to live with since it doesn't have to be turned up so darn loud and its much easier to lug around.
When I bought the Fulldrive II, I auditioned it against a Carl Martin Hot Drive 'n Boost II. Truthfully, the Martin pedal is more versatile since it has more gain on tap -- you can go deep into fuzz territory with it. But the Fulldrive does the low- to mid-gain thing better IMO, and its easier to get serviced since its not from Europe and has better distribution. And the Martin *requires* A/C power.

Like most stompboxes, this one is easy to use. Dialing in the right tone only takes a little tweaking. The manual discusses the controls sufficiently. My only beef is that it uses a pull-pot to access uncompressed overdrive, I would prefer a switch.

Sound Quality : 10
I should preface this by saying that I am happy with the tone of my current gear (Fender Roadhouse Strat & Groove Tubes Soul-o 75) without any additions. The reason I mention this is because the FDII seems to be a transparent addition to my setup. When the pedal is bypassed is doesn't color my tone at all.
But the fun is when I engage the pedal and it sounds like my tone but WAY BIGGER. I love the range of tones the FDII produces, from "clean with some grit" to "mid-scooped TS-808 distortion" to "near-fuzz". When I add the variable Boost I get just the right amount of added volume, gain, and sustain (so sweet!). I haven't even mentioned the uncompressed mode that ranges in tone from "just a little bit punchier" to "molten tube overdrive".
All of the tones this pedal produces are very musical.

Reliability : 8
I could easily take out the chickenhead knobs. But the rest would withstand all of the abuse I can dish out.

Customer Support : 10
I have had nothing but good dealings with Michael Fuller with regards to my direct communications with him. It's hard to get a bad sound out of it; most of the range of all the knobs is usable. The fact that it can footswitch between two drive settings makes it even easier to use, for switching between, say, rhythm and lead, or (using the guitar's volume control and/or pickup selector) two volume and lead settings. There's some overlap between the two channels' ranges, so you're not locked into using two radically different sounds. The two channels share volume and tone knobs. LEDs show the bypass status and channel (even when bypassed).

Sound Quality : 8
Using a Boss AC adaptor, there's a slight hum when it's on; not objectionably loud (though you might notice it if recording; try a battery), and gone when bypassed. This pedal can get a wide range of distortion sounds, especially "classic" era sounds (late 60s-mid 70s). The overdrive channel is better than other overdrives I've tried because it doesn't attenuate the high and low frequencies. In other words, it preserves the character and settings of the guitar and amp. The boost channel is good for thick, sustaining leads, and all the way up, it approaches fuzz intensity. In the uncompressed mode, it cleans up nicely when you turn down the volume on the guitar, and it's good for adding a bit of grit to thicken country leads (the Eagles would love it). It has true bypass.

Reliability : 10
No problems in 3 months of light use; it feels well built.

Overall Rating : 10
I mainly use it with Fender tube amps, playing rock/blues/country. I don't really need to have any other overdrive or distortion pedals, because this one does it all excellently. For metal, it's probably not quite tight and scooped enough (but I don't play that style).

This pedal is idiotproof. If you need a manual for it, you should quit guitar playing right now! You really can't get a bad sound out of it. It is very warm sounding for a solid state unit. I have the one with the pull drive knob, which really fattens the sound. There is a tone knob, which I set to 2'o clock with my LP Standard, a volume knob (I max this one out) and boost knob. The boost knob controls the boost channel' This pedal in general is not too bright sounding, which suits me fine. I use it with a 1987X Plexi Marshall hooked up to a Power Brake. It is not a metal sound, but it is very toneful, and I get people asking and complimenting me about my sound.

Sound Quality : 9
I use to punch the front end of my Marshall. I set the drive at 10'o clock and pull the knob. I don't use the boost channel as it mushes the sound too much. I plug into the BOTTOM left input in my Marshall and set the high treble volume to 2'o clock. I control my stage volume with the Power Brake. The problem with the power brake is that it cuts high frequencies too much at high attenuation. Anyway, it's an awesome sounding set-up. It is not a metal set-up, but the combination of the fulldrive tone and the Marshall power section adding its own compression makes it a very "creamy" sustaining sound, specially when playing lead. It has a very forgiving feel. Kinda like a good Mesa/Boogie, but with a Marshall-like tone. The fulldrive tone doesn't mess with the Marshall character, which is why I like it. When I use the fulldrive's boost channel as the only source of gain, ie: with the Marshall clean, I don't like the sound as much. It sounds just like an TS-9, good sound but no hard-on! That's why I gave it a 9. As far as solid state pedals, I think it is the best one, along with the TS-9. I think this pedal is at its best when you use to complement the sound of your existing amp, assuming you have a good one!

This is a very good overdrive pedal and it's ability to bypass much of the compression is very cool. What this pedal will not do though some have claimed it will is do the tube screamer 808 thing. It will get in the ballpark, but it sounds much more like a TS5 soundtank pedal. The edge it produces is harder and more edgy than an 808. The 808 has a beautiful sweetness that the Fulldrive 2 could not duplicate in an AB test. Conversely, the Fulldrive 2 had more different sounds and a wider gain range than the 808.

I didn't buy it. I took it home to test it out through a Matchless Chieftain with a PRS McCarty and a Fender Strat with Fralins. It is a great sound, but the lack of sweetness that the 808 has kept me from buying it. If I wanted a little more rocking sound though, I'd definitely give it a listen. I loved the uncompressed sound and the boost control did a great job of sending the sound over the top. It's just a little too hard edged for my blues-based sound....

Very transparent, doesn't change the fundamental tone you already have. Adds a warm, very musical overdrive or a heavier distorted tone, doesn't obscure the high or low end. With the pull pot activated it removes most of the compression from the pedal, giving less drive, and even more transparency.

Reliability : 10
Built in a heavy steel enclosure, would use without a backup.

Customer Support : 10
Mike was nice on the phone and took time to answer questions.

Overall Rating : 10
I would buy it again, I love the way it does not change your fundamental sound I'm playing through an expensive, excellent sounding rig already and didn't want to lose the sound I already had. Compared it to a Matchless Hotbox Both sound good, but at half the price this is hard to beat. All testing done through a Vibroking and a 54 Custom Shop Strat, it sounds better with the strat than with my PRS. Definitely try this pedal out if you're in the market for a new ditortion box.

Pretty darn easy to use. As stated before four knobs: Volume, Tone Gain, Boost. The Volume has a pull feature for a less compressed overdrive.

Sound Quality : 10
Well enough can't be said of this pedal. It is definately the Holy Grain of overdrive pedals. I use this pedal to drive the front end of a 65 Twin Reverb RI and it sounds excellent (guitar = Strat Plus Delux). The tone knob for me is usually set at about 3:00. With my setup I find this to be more middle of the road than 12:00 (ie in my hands the unit is dark and bassy). The standard (compressed) overdrive is everything from smooth to balls out AC/DC type drive (especially with boost mode). The pull volume mode (less compressed) is absolutely essential for blues work. This puts any tubescreamer to shame. Another nice bonus of the FD-2 is that it makes your amp sound good at low volumes too. But in front of a loud Twin Reverb its heaven. The boost channel can effectively be used as a boost for solos in both modes (compressed and less compressed drive). The true bypass is transparent.

Reliability : 9
The unit is housed in thick (16-18ga?) steel and is very durable. I wouldn't hesitate to use it without backup. But I'll give it only a 9 as I have only had it for 2 weeks and haven't gigged with it yet.

Customer Support : 10
I've spoke to Mike Fuller a few times (via e-mail) and he's always been responsive. I can't imagine not getting good customer support from Fulltone

Overall Rating : 10
If for some reason this was lost or stolen I would have to run out and buy another one. I cannot live without this pedal. The versatility is well in excess of its price.

Using this pedal is a piece of cake. Start out by setting the Overdrive control at zero and the Volume and Tone at 12 o'clock, then experiment from there! I also own an original Fulldrive, and I loved it so much I bought a 2.

Sound Quality : 10
This pedal sounds very close to an AC-30 cranked. I have owned Rats, Tube Drivers, XXL's: nothing comes close to the sound this baby gives. I use an original Fulldrive for my rhythm sounds (love the way it sweetly and slightly fattens up single-coils)and an early 2 model for my leads. The amount of bottom this pedal is unbelievable! If you are sick of your overdrive box brightening up your sound too much (as I was) this box is it.

Reliability : 10
Built like a tank. Components all of the highest quality, true bypass, I have experienced absolutely no problems with either of my units. Battery life seems excellent as well.

I have spoken with Mike Fuller on the telephone several times, and each time he has been extremely cordial and helpful. He is always willing to provide suggestions and discuss what ever changes are in the works. He has never once rushed me off the phone, or acted as if he was too busy to talk (all of our conversations have lasted at least 30 min. Mike has always listened to my opinions and treated me with as much respect as I imagine he does the "big boys". I really can't rate him high enough in this dept.

Overall Rating : 10
As mentioned previously, I own two Fulldrive pedals. At the time of my first purchase I bought a Tech 21 XXL. The Fulldrive blew it away, so much so that I returned the XXL and spent my refund immediately on another Fulldrive (by now a model 2). Recently a luthier friend of mine repaired a Gibson J-45 which I had come across. He probably did about $500 worth of work (it was a '46 or '47 that had resided in a home only heated by a wood burner). When the work was done on my guitar, I inquired to my friend what I had owed him. " I really would like one of those Fulldrive 2 pedals. Can you get me one of those." I did, and when it arrived it was one of the first Corvette-Orange models. I did several blind folded comparisons: his sounded every bit as good as mine. More than anything else, these pedals have helped me achieve that elusive sound in my head we all search for. As I told Mike, if I had spent two grand on a boutique amp and gotten the same sounds I would have been thrilled. Buying a Fulldrive 2 is a much more practical alternative!

I got a good deal on this used one so I bought it. I had played the Fulldrive1 before and didn't care too much about it. I am not impressed with the fulldrive2 either. Channel 1 (lower gain) is good for a tube screamer type of sound (ala Vaughan). For that type of sound this pedal does a very good job. It seems to me that with the tone all the way up, the eq is flat, and treble is cut as you roll it to the left antil it becomes very dark sounding. The good thing is that it does preserve the low end pretty well (unlike most distortions). At low gain, the distortion is sweet, and the guitar tone is pretty much preserved but the pedal cannot boost a clean signal without distorting it even with the gain in the minimum (major disapointment); in this respect, the Centaur (Klon) does a much better job. The boost mode was very disapointing. It just increases distortion, but it sounds nothing (to my ears) like a crancked tube amp at all. If you use it with an already overdriven tube amp, it will give some sustain, but that's about it. The boost control does not have much impact on the volume. I think it sounds best at around 9-10 o'clock to add just a bit more distortion when you need. For nice saturated tube sounds, I think the Tech 21 XXL or the Ibanez Tube King are much better. For saturated tube distortion, get an XXL or Tube King, for lower gain, get a tube screamer, or even better a centaur or a Expandora.

The FullDrive 2 is nothing short of GREAT! And my quest for ultimate tone, I've about tried them all. Tired of programming? Just plug this thing in and you can chuck all that digital gear into the nearest bargain bin. Four knobs, four functions. All fairly self explanatory... except maybe the "Boost" feature. I didn't get a manual with the pedal since I bought it from a friend, but a quick e-mail note to Mike and he dropped one in the mail to me.

Sound Quality : 10
The sound quality is very good, and the pedal is fairly quiet even when idling in the Overdrive mode. When you find the sweet-spot, it will deliver a saturated, creamy, singing tone... sorta like an enraged Soldano. It is never brassy or harsh... even with the Tone control in the extreme. Of, couse... this may vary depending on what type of amp you're using. I use it to add crunch to low-key rhythm work and to add a nice edge to leads... it works well for both functions. I was using an old TS-9 Tube Screamer and Boss Blues Driver for these two sounds, but the FullDrive 2 booted these guys right outa the saddle. The distortion tones sound better (for my tastes) in the 50-75% range. Run you guitar volume in this range too, and you'll have plenty of headroom to kick up you leads when you need to. The pedal is very sensitive to input... both from your pick "attack" and the guitar's signal. The Boost feature is best used to fatten up you Overdrive signal. It won't add a lot of gain, especially if you're max'd out on your guitar volume. I just read a note from another user who has recently had his box upgraded (by Mike Fuller) to increase the boost and add a little more "bottom" to it. I'd be interested to see if this was a user mod, or if I need to send it off to the factrory.

Reliability : 10
The FullDrive 2 is built to withstand almost anything! With a heavy steel housing, good switchgear, and knobs big enough to nudge with your feet, even the glossy finish is tough enough to take a lot of abuse. And (if bought new) the FullDrive carries a lifetime warranty. I usually carry the old TS-9 along simply to satisfy my paranoia, but I have no doubt that this pedal will always be there when I need it.

Customer Support : 10
The only time I needed any support was when I asked for an owner's manual and that was handled very promptly... like, the next day. So, I have no complaints in that area.
We'll see what happens when I hit Mike up for the upgrade!

Overall Rating : 10
If I lost all my gear and had to replace it...yep, I'd buy it again. I use a Matchless SC-30 and the pedal makes a perfect compliment to an already great amp. I also tried it through an old Bassman head and a 15" speaker box. .. Sounds pretty damn good like that, too. It doesn't seem to work as well with solid-state amps as it does for tube amps. I've tried a lot of different stuff to get the "perfect tone" and I've come to realize that the K.I.S.S. theory holds true here, also. Start with a good sounding amp and add ONLY what is necessary to make it better. You can bog yourself down with crap and get so involved in operating your gear, that you forget what you're there for in the first place.

RAY CHARLES COULD USE THIS WITH NO PROBLEM. 4 knobs & two switches w/led indicators for on & boost. there's a new upgrade that Mike told me about that took him about ten minutes to do. It gives you a clean boost and better low end.

I've had this since May and have been contiually impressed with how wonderful it sounds.I have a Matchless HC-30 and this pedal sounds like my amp on "10". No matter what amp I use this in it sounds like that amp. Very natural sounding. I replaced a TS-9, a Gov'nor and two Bluesbreaker pedals with just this one!!

Reliability : 10
I'd stake my carrer and my life on this pedal. I've used it on around 70 gigs and some sessions since I got it and I never had any doubts as to even wondering if it would hold up. It's built like a rock.

Mike's a great guy who always has time to answer any questions I have. He told me about the upgrade(even though I thought it sounded super before it sounds that much better now)I took it over and he did it while I waited and never complained about his schedule being interupted.I wish that there were more people in the industry like him instead of a bunch of "I know what's right" self serving assholes!

I wish I could afford to buy a bunch of these to give to all my guitar playing friends so I wouldn't have to listen to bad overdrives ever again. This pedal is very musicial and invites inspiration. This peadal is laid out very well. 4 knobs -Volume,Tone,Overdrive,Boost - All knobs are fairly self-explanatory except maybe the boost - This function tends to be more like a second setting for the overdrive than a dramatic boost. The boost channel canbe dramatic if the overdrive channel is set rather low and the boost is all the way up. There is a true bypass switch with a red light and the boost channel has a switch with a yellow light. The volume knob works well and it's easy to match the playing volume of your amp. Thetone function offers a wide range of EQ choices.(or at least as much as one tone control can)

Sound Quality : 10
This pedal uses a true bypass switch so it will not "color" your sound when not in use. When the overdrive is engaged there is very limited extra noise -one of the quietest overdrive pedals around. You can dialin the overdrive from just a bit to full bore with great ease. The overdrive sound is very "warm" and not "buzzy" in the least -you willswear it's using a tube but it's not. Very classic sound. If you set the overdrive channel to a low setting and the boost channel to a highsetting than there will be a very noticeable difference when you kick in the boost - If you have the overdrive channel past 12 o'clock thanthe switch to the full on boost channel is not that dramatic. Certainly this pedal could not cover all of a players needs in terms of using it for rythmn and then switching to lead but few pedals can-

Reliability : 10
The Fulldrive2 is built like a tank and has a lifetime warranty and dare I say is down right attractive!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Very good support - Mike the owner, always answered my E-mails promptly and delivered the pedal in the time period he promised.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall - This pedal has delivered the "goods" to my full satisfaction. It's built well and delivers a truly classic, warm overdrive with lots of control over the tone and intensity. This pedal is the most dynamic overdrive unit I have ever played through - It follows your playing volume and picking -soft when you play soft, hard when you lay into it. The clarity of complex chords picked with the overdrive on is outstanding. The pedal's true bypass switch is a god send! - If I had to suggest anything for the Fulldrive3 of the future it would be more specific EQ control and a seperate volume for the boost channel so it could always crank above the overdrive channel. This pedal is not cheap but well worth the investment. A mustfor tube-screamer types. (kicks proverbial "butt" on the screamer)-A very welcomed addition to my tone arsenal.

Fairly easy, just a few knobs and two footswitches

Sound Quality : 9
Very low noise (for a distortion box at least) and has a nice tone to it. The boost I didn't find too useful, I kind of wanted to go from a rhythm overdrive to a lead sound but the boost doesn't seem to get that big of a boost (at least with my amp and setup). As far as the quality of the distortion it's very nice, about what I expected from this pedal. Goes from a nice bluesy overdrive to a heavy rock crunch (not really too metally though, if you want that you should stick with a Boss HM2 I guess).

Reliability : 10
Seems to be a pretty solid metal stomp-box.

Fulltone@aol.com has appeared in the newsgroups and he seems to be a bit cocky, arrogant, and personally comes off as a bit of a prick sometimes. I can't really complain about his pedals (I also have the 70's pedal, see the other review), although sometimes I don't get my e-mail answered and the one time I called he seemed pretty "abrupt" with me (calling him a bit of a prick now probably won't help my cause! ;-)

Overall Rating : 10
It's a great overdrive pedal and is the only one I use. My only complaint is I wish the boost would get a bit more but maybe I can experiment with how it's used in my rig. Fulltone did mention to me it works better in the "straight" channel and not the switched/ master volume channel. It has a nice range from a soulfully bluesy overdrive to a fairly hard rock crunch sound (but not quite enough for metal probably which is just fine by me, you should be using a Marshall cranked anyway! :-)

Has Output, Tone, Overdrive & Boost controls. Two footswitches - one for the overdrive and a second kicks in the afterburner aka boost. This pedal sound really really good. The tone control is really flexible but very sensitive between about 3 to 5 o'clock. The high end comes on real fast. Set up like the manual suggests, the overdrive at about 11 o'clock and output can be just over unity gain for crunchy rythm work. Set the boost at about 1 o'clock hit the second switch and blow a Tube Screamer back to another decade.

Sound Quality : 10
Through a Fender Blues Deluxe clean channel I can get a '59 Bassman nailed. While it can't be called a metal pedal, it does have copious amounts of dirve in the boost mode. It's really good

This is not your ordinary overdrive pedal. There are 4 dials, and two foot switches. The fottswitches are on/off, and boost. The dials are volume, gain, tone, and boost. The boost depends a lot on the normal overdrive settings. But it adds fatness and a little volume (not enough to go rhythym to lead). This pedal is truly amazing. It is truer to a tube overdrive than the Tube Screamer. It gets louder and more overdiven than the Tube Screamer.

Sound Quality : 10
This thing has true bypass, and is extremely quiet even using AC power.

It is built by hand with care, and it shows.

This is the best thing to happen to overdrive since the original Tube Screamer. Well worth the price.
