2 sliders for Sensitivity and Peak, and 3 switches for Drive, Filter, and Range. I had a great Bootsy bass thang going in about 5 minutes- it's pretty easy to dial in. Use your ears!

Whew. Killer. Works great for guitar or bass, with no hiss or noise. The effect is strong, but not overdone like the EBS. As a previous reviewer stated, it's a tight, "pro" sounding effect. Personally, I'd put it right up there with some of the best auto wahs I've heard.

So far, so good. I've had this pedal for a few years now and really love it. I power all my pedals off a 9VDC power supply, and have never had any issues at all.

I haven't dealt with Ibanez regarding this pedal, but have contacted them with other product issues. The person I spoke with was a cool guy and eager to help resolve the issues I had, going far beyond what some of the other companies would do. Awesome.

Great pedal, reliable, sounds wicked. It makes the ladies shake their asses. Mission accomplished.

It is easy to get wild sounds right off the bat, but it takes a while to understand what all the sliders and switches do. Unlike other Filters, this one allows the user to select drive, filter, and range along with sliders which adjust the sensitivity and peak. I bought mine used and did not get a manual with it (which would have been extremely useful).

I run this filter through a Roland JC 120, which seems to be a good choice because of the naturally abrupt attack of the Roland. This unit carries a strong signal which allows the user to get consistently deep effects when engaged.
Jerry Garcia is one artist that comes to mind when I play the AF 9. The Mutron III is generally acknowledged as the most powerful filter, but the AF 9 will provide serious competition because of the strong signal and consistently deep effect.
It does not appear to be noisy at all, and the bypass works quite well.

I just got this pedal, so I don't know how it will hold up. I can say that it looks and feels sturdy, and my experiences with Ibanez series 9 pedals have been positive so I'm not expecting any problems.

Most of the time I play jazz, but I'll turn on the filter when I get a wild hair up my ass and jam out the funk. I've been playing for 14 years, and also play the Tenor Saxophone.
If it were stolen, I'd look for another one. If I couldn't find another one, I would quickly pick up a Mutron III+.

Like most things it takes a little time to figure them out.But the AF-9 is pretty simple if you know what to look for.

These things are great. It's the closest thing to the Mutron 3 envelope filter that I've ever heard.By tweaking it's parameters you can go from subtle "pick-wah" to full blown boomerang funk!!The choice
of high, mid, and low settings sounds range from "swallowing soda" to "bathtub fart".It's the Queen funk-box supreme!! Spanks the T-wah, Dynamic filter, and Auto-wah,they run home to mama.

Very sturdy construction, but on/off switch can get messed up sometimes. Can back it up with T-wah,but it has no equal(except Mutron 3 orig.)

If lost or stolen I'd probably need prozac. It's the poor-man's Mutron.
"Hey Ibanez, make some more of these, will ya"!!

Like Michael's review said, this is the Auto Filter from the 9 series. No manual for this but I'd like to find one. It's not difficult to find a good sound, the tough part is keeping track of all the different sounds the AF-9 will generate.

Like the rest of the 9 series, it sounds very good. I bought this pedal without ever trying one, so I first put in in the effects loop of my amp (early 80's Fender Concert). Did almost nothing good here so I tried it in front of the amp and voila. The person I bought this from had adjusted the internal trim pots (DON'T mess with these unless you know what you're doing - I had to get my PT-9 Phaser repaired after fooling with the "Bias" trim pot. Oops.). I was able to get the original pot settings from a fellow pedal nut and after trying them found out that the adjustments I made sounded better than the factory settings. All the settings sound good now. As far as sounds, think of a wah pedal in at least 10 different dimensions. It can do half of Jimmy Page's solo sound from "Fool in the Rain" (doesn't do the octave thing) and I've heard it on some Radiohead stuff too. And of course, the guitar at the end of The Who's "Mobile" and Bootsy Collin's bass sound.

I've only seen three of these in the past year and they don't seem to collect dust sitting in a store's case. Out of all the Ibanez 9 series, this one is the most distracting... it just does lots of weird stuff. I've been able to get a great normal wah sound and then the same sound backwards. My least favorite aspect of this pedal is the color (cubicle wall tan). It wasn't cheap or easy to find, but they do turn up and they're worth the effort.

This is basically the same pedal as the AF-201 Auto Filter from the same series as the TS-808, but in a TS-9 package. Same 2 sliders - Sensitivity and Peak, and the same 3 FET switches for modes and high pass low pass.
Start with everything in the up position, and tailor what you want from there.

Well, I have a mint AF-201 already, that I have been sweating about dragging around with me. It doesn't have a scratch on it, so I wanted a AF-9 to actually use. Much to my surprise, it's a better pedal. The 201 needs to be blasted with a boosted signal via a compressor or clean boosting overdrive to get the sound you want. The AF-9 on the other hand, is more sensitive, and the sound is right there. You can hear the whole envelope and you can be more free to try other settings, where on the 201 you crank the sliders and hit your notes harder to make sure the signal gets there.
This is the sound you hear on Parliment and Funkadelic albums, and for the younger crowd, the solo on Edie Brickell's 'What I Am,' or 'Mobile' by The Who, or Jerry... Great sound.

I don't have many pedals from the 9 series. (I like the 808 series stuff.) I hear the switches are suspect, but can be fixed or replaced by swell guys like Analog Mike.

Never dealt with them. I have sent them a few e-mails over the years to which they have never replied, but that's typical.

Great pedal. I was hoping for something as good as the 201, and this has a more usable signal, as I don't have to force it. First off, I am not an envelope guru, just a fan. I have not used the Mutrons, the Meatball, or the EH Zipper, other than that, I like these Ibanez pedals quite a bit. You will not get a similar sound out of a Boss. I also have the AW-2 and the FT-2 Dynamic Filter. They are completely different.
Anyhow, save yourself a chunk of change from buying a 201, and pick up one of these if you get the chance, but only if you like filters - they're not for everyone, and they have limited use. You may only use it for 30 seconds the whole night...
