It's a lot like the AF-9.It's an ENVELOPE FILTER(not an auto-wah).But it's easier than the 201 or AF-9.

Sound Quality : 8
I almost forgot about this pedal....yeah,I used to own one of these.
The AFL is the 10 series auto-filter that was supposed to replace the AF-9...HELL NO! It has two sliders and two switches(not 3),which makes it less versitile than it's big brothers.
Now,as a basic auto-filter,the AFL's class-mates would be the T-WAH(pretty good),DOD(no reverse),Dr.Q(fragile),FT-2(Boss)and beats the snot out of the MXR! It also has a stronger signal that the Zipper(frail). The other good point is the AFL's deeper tone and stable decay. They're in the "middle of the pack" as far as auto-filters go.

Reliability : 6
10 series pedals are NOT as well built as the 9 series! The In/Out jacks are mounted on the curcuit board. So,if you kick or step on your cable head, you'll smash the board...just kiss that shit good-bye!

You're joking...right?

I can recall the days when the FUNK was GOD!I'm talking 'bout Parliament,Bootsy,Lakeside,Sun,Jimmy Castor,Mandrill,Pleasure, Brothers Johnson(ect.)
If you want a basic auto-filter the AFL or T-Wah is a good choice. But they are NO MATCH for the Mutron 3,AF-9 or 201...so,let's not go there. You will, however, get a nice funky quacking sound in forward or reverse mode.Don't let anyone pull your drawers down over this thing! If you can find an AFL at a reasonable price,I'd say GO FOR IT!!

More or less self-explanatory. If you don't have the slightest
experience from envelope followers you'll still be able to
understand what it's supposed to do.

Sound Quality : 8
I use it for bass. Some noise mostly in the down mode even though my
bass is pretty much silent.

For that Bootsy watery Mu-tron sound I'd say it comes pretty close considering the second hand price on both units. It's a lot better than the EBS filter if you're into 70's funk.

Very versatile.

Combined with an aggresive modern type of fuzz I was able to get an
almost 303-like techno bass sound. Brilliant, and very inspiring.

Reliability : No Opinion
It's a master series Ibanez pedal, molded metal housing, plastic switch. Works fine so far.

I was looking for a more versatile envelope follower than my EH Bassballs and this one fits the bill just great. I haven't tried the AF-201 or AF-9 yet and I would welcome your compirasons.
This is something I plan to use A LOT in the future! And considering the price and availability (or should a say lack thereof) of a vintage Mu-tron III this is excellent value.
