very nice sound decay like reverb, with the echo(reverb+delay), unlike behringer delays that has prominent layered echo only. Best thing is that it behaves like an analog type delay, vary the time knob while playing and you will hear a "warp-ing" sound, and you won't hear a popping sound like the behringers, very cool warp effect!

It's NOT the Boss DD2 or DD3. It's more analogue, although on the case they said it's digital. only 400ms of delay, but that's enough for me.
used that unit with a vocal, with the guitar (Strat type) and with the bass guitar (Precision type) and with the various drumming machines. works very well, I like it's sound. that's not the best delay unit in the world, but I like it.
be carefull - it doesn't have a true bypass! works very well with Ibanez CS5 Chorus and SansAmp GT2 guitar amp simulator.

It's case has been made of a PLASTIC! it's a very risky thing to jump on it during the gig. you must be carefull, or you can destroy that unit rather easily.
I use it without a backup during the live shows - although I'm VERY carefull about that unit.
Sorry - only 5/10 for that effect's reliability...

Just a fantastic value for that price. Comparing to Boss DD3 - it's NOT that perfect, but I like the sound that this unit produces. For some folks 400ms isn't enough and they like more hi-fi sound. If you prefer longer and more digital delay - just buy some Boss' effects. but if you like the analogue sound more - try this hybrid made by Ibanez. it's something between digital and analogue...
If it was stolen/damaged or lost - I would like to buy another one.
Just be carefull about it's plastic case - just a shame on Ibanez about that! I've heard that an early Soundtanks' versions had a metal case.
Overall: a fantastic value for a very low price!

This is a tough one. It really depends on what you want from your delay.
I play mostly Rock based stuff - Humbuckers & Distorsion but usually use this for experimental / feedback purposes.
The pedal has a very 'Analogue' sound which is great for creating an organic, vintage delay effect or spacey experimental stuff. However it is very hard to get precision from it (It's tough to get the delay in time with a specific tempo). It does not sound very digital. Also, if you remove the base, you can tweak a couple of little pots to give a wider range of sounds. This does sacrifice sound quality at some settings but allows for some unique effects. I actually like the way it gets all gritty at long delay times.
I use it as the first effect in my chain (plug my guitar directly into it) because it won't handle a distorted sound going into it very well. There is also a loss of high frequencies in your tone because it has no direct bypass.

Had it for years, used & abused it a lot, took it apart once & put it back together easily, kicked it off stage at a gig, jumped on it with my full weight (15 Stone) a couple of times etc.....
It's very robust & still works like new.
Be warned though! These things eat through batteries quicker than anything I have ever used.

If I lost this or it broke I would want another because nothing else sounds like the Soundtank. It creates Mars Volta type sounds with extreme ease & I'm considering housing the insides in a Wah Wah style pedal & linking the Time control to the rocker. This will make it a box of madness indeed. They sometimes appear on e-bay for about #15. If you see one & want to make sone bizzare sounds BUY IT. They are overlooked by most people & they don't know what they're missing. However, if you want a super clean, precise unit, this is not for you.

Super easy to use. This Digital Delay pedal doesn't use a microprocessor. Instead there is a custom Mitsubishi Echo Generator that designed for Karaoki machines. The Echo chip has only 100 milliseconds of delay, but Ibanez extends this by slowing down the Echo chip's system clock to 1/4 of the designed speed. The Delay-Time control changes the period of the Echo chip's system clock. At long delays (long being about 350 milliseconds here) there is some gritty noise static distortion.
The short Delay Length can be doubled by 'piggy-backing' another D-RAM chip on top of the one on the circuit board. It's a standard 4164 type 64Kx1 DRAM that sells for a dollar when you can find it, as it's been obsolete for many years. Place the second 4164 DRAM right on top of the first and solder all the pins in parallel except the input and output pins. Connect the out pin from the first DRAM to the input of the second dRAM. Connect the out pin of the second dRAM to where the first DRAM's out pin went. You've doubled the echo Delay Time.
Tweak the pot that is on the circuit board next to the Repeat control to get near-infinite repeat echos when the Repeat knob is set to max.
This pedal is the closest that any Digital Delay gets to the Analog Delay sound. However, it has footswitch problems like all Ibanez soundtanks as the components age. Next to the foot switch there is a .001 uF capacitor to ground. Replace this with a new .005 uF cap and the footswitch will no longer need several presses to toggle.
These pedals are selling for $25 on eBay (April 2005) and are a good deal even without the modifications. They just don't have the long delay period or high repeat level that are currently fashionable.

This is my first delay pedal. Been planning to buy a boss pedal but this pedal immediately sounds good in my chain so bought it (2nd hand). Im using it with my samick strat copy, 22 frets on rosewood board, maple neck. Pickups are cheap on the middle and neck, but the bridge comes from a very old fender. My signal goes to chrome dunlop crybaby -> mxr flanger -> marshall drivermaster ->arion tubemania -> ibanez soundtank dl5 and finally, to a ROTO amp (locally made here in the Philippines). What does this delay sounds like? Listen to the "manhattan" by eric johnson. Note: dont try to use delay ahead of distortions. It must be the last on the chain (last effect before the amp). Any delay pedal sounds mushy mushy the other way way around.

Its plastic but it has a heavy metal base. That's what really matters. Plastics aren't noisy, what you need to do is ground your amp. This is crazy, but i use my keyboardist's boss dl3 as my backup.

My band gigs in fiestas (festivals) with all types of folks in attendance. We play Classical Music (e.g. samba, tango, waltz, cha cha), standard rock music by Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Guns & Roses, etc., ballads and pops, R & B. I've been playing in a band for 10 years now. I know somethings missing in my sound till i bought my delay. Now my distortion sounds fatter, has more sustain to it, my lead work sounds great too (esp. slow lead work). It has more emotions to it. Of course, I could survive a nite without it. It all in the hands after all. If stolen? I'll buy other one, if it is still available. Finally, good music comes from good gears, good heart, and good mind. "an't play music if you seem want to kill the person next to you"

The DL-5 is a very simple and intuitive delay, with three knobs for effect volume, repeats, and delay length. There are a lot more delays out there, with a lot more features, but this delay is very simple to use. Mine never had a manual so I can't comment on its quality, but I would say that no manual is necessary. Nearly everything sounds good, so you just dial the knobs until you get the sound you want. Changing the battery was also ultra simple.
Sound Quality
:

For such an inexpensive, simple delay, the DL-5 has a fairly wide repertoire of sounds. Its tone is unmistakably digital, but entirely pleasant, even warm. One thing which this delay has over some other delays is that at its lowest delay settings, it can make an excellent digital reverb. I ended up selling it to get an Akai Headrush, but at the time my rig was a 1965 Fender Mustang--->Russian Big Muff--->Ibanez DL-5 Delay--->Peavey Classic 30. It was a spectacular entry level delay in terms of its price and quality. I sold it to get the Akai Headrush because I wanted the sampling capabilities and a longer delay time. It was great for me at the time I had it, though, because I was just getting into a lot of effects. Unlike the other reviewers, I found it to be neither tone-sucking nor noisy. Even though this pedal is overall a great little number, I could see where a knob-twiddler, which is what I have become, would start to feel limited. Higher-end delays with more features have a bigger pay-off in terms of sculpting your tone, but for the meat and potatoes player that just wants an echo, this is perfect...just don't pay too much for it.

At the time I was using this pedal, I was just beginning to use a lot of effects, and I was really interested in coaxing bizarre and other-worldly noises out of an electric guitar. I loved putting this pedal in the effects loop of my EH Q-tron+. It was great for simple delays too. I owned it for 5 years, and it is the reason that I am now obsessed with delay. Eventually, I moved on to a more advanced delay because I wanted to work with one that had a wider palette of sounds and tonal possibilities. I now have the Headrush and a Roland Space Echo, and for the money, these are better-sounding, more versatile units. However, for what the DL-5 can do, and for the price, its pay-off is pretty huge.

The sound quality on the DL-5 is very good. It does not sound like a digital delay but more like an analog echo effect if that makes sense. It has a very organic sound that blends into the mix rather than being layered on top of it. I noticed another reviewer using this with a '68 Fender Twin and getting comments after the gig as to what delay?? Then you show then the soundtank and they are like what the hell!! that thing sounds increadible.
Yep it sure does, from slapback echo to mild space cadet this thing is truely a sleeper pedal. It is like anaolog warm with digital clarity and no noise at all.
It works beatufully with other pedals such as my Arion SCH-1 Chorus (awsome pedal to).
If you see one of the DL-5 pedal's you should try to get it as there is nothing like around for quality, warmth and clarity when recorded or live.

It sounds really good. It is not noisy. It says digital delay but it sure has a great warm sound to it. It also functions in real time which is strange. I've been playing for 19 years, so I know tone. I use a Telecaster , Ibanez Tubescreamer,
Ibanez SC 10 Chorus, and this thing with a Vox AC 30 amp. I go for a down-to-earth 70s
rock tone. I need stuff that is easy to operate, doesn't freak on me and delivers
good sound. I play strictly rhythm 99 percent of the time.
The DL 5 is quiet and very warm sounding. You can't get a bad sound with this.
The downside is, it does pretty much its thing, no fancy options, no tap
delays, no backwards stuff, all with a maximum delay time of 400 ms.
Here's the good news: What it does, it does admirably well. You can get those
U2 style sounds, like "Bad". Very round sound, not sterile at all.
Solid, simple, good sounding box. Also works OK with my Tubescreamer.
Metal may not be its piece of cake.

I play guitar oriented rock / pop. I go for a vintage sound, mostly clean,
and this unit matches OK. I'm satisfied. I also had a SE 50 multieffect,
and the sound of the DL 5 is MUCH better. Much easier to use, too. I prefer to
play music, not fiddle with knobs. Only other delay that I like is my
old Alesis microverb III (the one with the knobs on it). But for guitar,
I prefer the little plastic bug because of its warmer sound and no-nonsense
operation.
I probably wouldn't bother with getting this exact thing again if stolen,
I just go for what sounds best to me.
You should know by now that this thing doesn't get in the way. I have produced
lots of good recordings with it. I just like that I don't have to bother
while I'm playing :)
Can't beat it for the price, and it has character. Good enough for me.

Running this at the end of a lengthy chain:
Gibson Les Paul Studio > Boss Tuner > Boss Flanger > Dano Flanger > Boss OD-1 > Dunlop Wah > DL-5. This all runs into a Fender Champ 25SE. Seems to be quiet for gig levels, haven't done a bedroom test, but to me, that really doesn't matter at this point. Since it's not the longest delay you can't get the Petrucci 3-second solo delay thing, but cranking the delay time to it's maximum is the perfect speed for that Dave Gilmour "The Wall" galloping rhythm part.

I play in a Fuel/Tea Party style band, and this thing works well as a added layer to my solos, or for some nice single note lines and lush chord sweeps. Been playing for 10 yrs now, and I rate thing well above my DOD digital delay/sampler, which can delay 16 seconds but makes more noise than a 747. I would definitely replace this pedal, and in fact have been looking for one of my own. While I do wish it went for some slightly longer delay times every once and a while, at a price of under $75 (US or Canadian) I really can't ask for much more. For someone who needs some usable delay sounds and needs them cheap and reliable, I haven't found anything to beat it. If you want more, then pay more.

The Dl5 has only 400ms of delay, but was perfect for the type of short delay sounds I need in my group. It is really warm sounding for a digital delay and produces a wonderfuly clean and crisp sound, with albsolutely no hum or hiss, even at stage volumes. Because of its simplicity, it is not the most versatile of pedals in the world, but if you want a short digital delay, then this is great!

I play in an alternative three piece called One Day I Stopped Breathing, some-where in-between Soundgarden, Tool, Shellac, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and as a three piece we often need that little something extra to fill in the empty spaces, especially when we drift of into meandering passages of music that could sound any-where between Miles Davis, to Roni Size and Reprezent, or Alice in Chains, to Led Zepplin. With the Dl5, I have found an excellent delay at one quater the price of the Boss DD3, which I personally find dull and character-less. This pedal on the other hand produses a lovely delay which re-produces what you play when you want it to.
In the five years I have been playing I have used hundreds of different pedals, of which this the only delay (other than the Line 6 delay modler) that I have ever liked.
It would of been nice if this pedal had some form of reverse delay, but I didnt buy this pedal for its frills! It is a straight up, simple pedal withthe basic functions that you need, and if you can find one then get one, even if it is for back-up, because you will not be dissapointed! If it was stolen, I would definetley try to find another one.
This pedal really helps you to create music, it advances your ideas and leads you into uncharted territory! By using a delay, you can find all kinds of sounds that you thought never existed, and fill that space often left in one guitar bands when playing simple mellowed out riffs or passages of music.
Great investment all round!

Easy to use.. Pedal for repeat volume, no. of repeats, length of repeat. These knobs are NOT consitent, and depending on the life of your battery, the settings will come out completely different. Nearly dead battery produces fewer repeats at a lower volume but a much longer delay.

Bad. Using it with a Ibanez JS10th Chromeboy, a Tele, and a 50th Anniversary Strat Plus through a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV. I'm proud to have great tone, and when I use this thing, it sucks it right up. All my treble gets bled off, and the tone becomes very muddy. Repeats sound very "sterile" and digital. When used through the effects loop in my amp, the volume of the repeats with the knob cranked, a fresh battery/or a power supply, and the repeats arent nearly as loud as the "live" note.

Eats batteries like nothing. Knobs are inconsistent and unreliable. Very VERY sensitive to moisture. Once performed outside with it the day after it rained and the moisture made it stop working until it dried up again.

Ibanez makes some great high end guitars, but everything else they make is crap. Never dealt with them personally, but have heard nothing but bad stories.

I've been playing for 6 years and I've had this for several years now. I thought it was an amazing pedal at the time, but I've really changed my mind about that after coming this far in my playing. It's cheap, so if you're on a budget I would reccomend it. I'm going to sell this thing and get a real delay unit.

Easy to use....three knobs and thats about it. It is hard to get a certain speed speed set because there is no time settings on it but for general use it is fine.

This is one area I could not believe when I plugged this unit in. I think it sounds really good. I play in live situations and use all professional equipment and I have been around many different products and this one amazed me. The delay time is short but who needs a real long delay time unless your hanging around just playing(screwing off). I use a Hughes and Kettner triamp half stack and run the dl5 last in the chain in the effects loop. I also use Boss flanger and phaser and the tuner made by Boss(TU-2 I think) along with a WH-1 and Crybaby. I am happy with the price of this unit and it's sound.

I play all covers in a local band and as I mention I do play a lot of different equipment and have been exposed to many different rigs in my life. I do feel that this pedal will work out for me for what I need it for(just mostly leads). I would tell recommend it to someone if they needed a good short delay pedal at a cheap price. Also the pedal does work with the Boss power adapters and the daisy chains.

This unit is very easy to use, BUT it's a petty there's no indication on the knobs what the actual value of the parametre is. Therefor it becomes difficult to accurately set the delay time, repeat time and level to the needs of the modern song. But going on your intuition works pretty well. A good sound is rapidly achieved.
But it's a limited unit, it's not a BOSS DD5. just three knobs, input & output.

I'm using an Epiphone Gibson with a Fender Blues Deville Amp and and Ibanez FUZZ 7. It's not noisy at all, the sound remains clean and very warm. The sound remains good when using the fuzz with it, you can get this spacy early 'the Verve' sound or just a fat lead tone. Playing chords with the fuzz and the delay adds little to the effect though.
The delay is 400ms but that's enough for general use, 400ms is a lot when playing normal songs on guitar.
I play mostly indiepop, Built to Spill, Pavement and stuff. the Halo Benders song Virginia Around the Fountain is my goal when using the delay, but that's not easy to do.

It's plastic. but I take care of my equipment so there's no problem there.. I would certainly use it on a gig. it's pretty sturdy.
the switch is good as well, it's not like some DOD pedals which don't
seem to switch on right and lights up the led even when off.
Seems to eat batteries though.

I play mostly indiepop. I'ts just plain fun to use it for clean, fat, spacy, anything. I've been playing a few years. I own an Epiphone guitar, Fender Blues Deville Amp, an Ibanez Fuzz and a Dod Envelope FIlter. I'd rather own a boss, but hey, for 37 bucks you can't find a better delay than this. I love the warm tone, but it's limited in its settings. I wish everyone in my band had one of these, because it's easy to use, you can't do much wrong.

A good sound is all that is possible. The manual is a single sheet with a few languages. It just says thankyou for purchasing... the three controls are level, repeat and delay time.
You can see the LED on a soundtank unlike a BOSS which can be obscured in a three nob device when looking from anything but overhead.
The input, output and power jacks are at the rear. You dont open the pedal to change the battery like a BOSS.
The pedal has a strong feel, and a rubber base so as not to slip around.
The controls have a white line so you can see your settings from a distance.
Dead simple to use.

Marshall ValveState 8080 in the effects loop. Samick Valley Arts Strat - Alder body, maple neck, wilkinson tremolo, roller nut, USA standard single coils, DiMarzio megadrive.
Also Samick Blues Saraceno with Floyd Rose and two humbuckers, Fender "The Twin" 100Watt all tube, Epiphone Sheraton II (ES335).
Has some hum with a high gain setting and high volume, but nothing like the noise that say a phaser makes. Considering the hum at rehersal levels is not to bad compared to the volume, and on stage miked up its relay not a problem. This is mainly due to my cheap AC adapter which has no earth and has extra plugs I've connected and the fact I have an earth loop between my delay and boss chorus. If I used two adapters it would disappear.
The delay is on the warm side, and is slightly analog in quality realy. It doesn't sap the original tone but the repeats are not clinical or hollow sounding.

Very strong, very thick plasic case. The jacks are solidly mounted. It isn't going to break unless you choose to break it.
It always switches on and off without fault or noise. The pots make no noise.
The constuction is strong and durable. Bits wont fall off after time.

If you want a long delay then this wont do it (400ms). If you want a great sound then this is it.
Mine gives fantasic results and I've owned or own a Zoom 2020 which has two seperate digiital delays, a Zoom Choir 5050 which gives upto 2 seconds of delay.
The DL5 sounds much better than other delays but in this delay time range you could relay use an analog delay so to use this is a bit silly if you want some warmth - although a new or vintage Analog is a totally expensive proposition - this is really great sounding, has enough delay for what I want and is nice and warm yet clean sounding.
A good balance of sound, price, ease of use and reliabiliy.

Although there was no manual at all when I bought this unit, it was pretty easy to produce the sounds that I want without messing around with the knobs for long. Actually you have to be a moron to fuck up the settings on this effect.

I use a Gibson Epiphone through a Peavey amp and with the right settings the DL5 is ideal for non-distorted dreamy/spacey sound which the Smashing Pumpkins use on Siamese Dream as well as Mellon Collie etc... When using the DL5 with distortion it sounds extremely mushy and messy (in short:it sucks), but then again it is very hard to do backwards playing and stuff like that. Overall a good warm sound, I LIKE IT!!

Since I am not trying to play blues and stuff like that I would'nt know whether this pedal is any good for you if you're a blues man. But for the sound I want the DL5 is absolutely perfect, it can produce everything from the spooky Limp Bizkit sounds that Wes Borland uses so often to the dreamworld of The Smashing Pumpkins. Although the DL5 is not as reliable and solid as a Boss it is still a good pedal, definetly worth the resonable amount of money that I spend on it.

I think that this pedal is crap. i bought this pedal with high hopes because i am a fan of ibanez but the the delay really doesnt sound nice. plus the delay time has a max of 400ms which really bites. It has to much of a chorus effect when its on that i dont like. i run it through my peavey ultra 410 connected to various other effects (flange, wah, chorus) and I'm in the market for another brand delay pedal now.

I would not recommened the DL5 to anyone. The effect is just not up to Ibanez quality. I like the ZOOM digital delay much better. It may be tempting to buy this pedal because its ease of use and good price but it's not worth it. Spend more and get more.

I use the dl-5 it in the effect loop of my Hughes&Kettner Tube 20 with a Musicman Luke and it sound great with low noise.

If you need long delays buy a boss or a rack.

like digitech, lexicon racks/Triamp which can't be compared to this.
This pedal works fine for my backup/low tar setup.
A question for Ibanez designers : soundtank pedals sound fine, but why does they look so *#**??!!** ?
