In use the Metal Charger takes a few minuets to set up. I like Distortion at 10. Level at 3. Attack at 1 1/2. Punch at 4.5. Edge at 4.

I use a Fender music master or Gibson Les paul. Into the MS10, ts9, ce-2, ns-2, ad-9, into a marshall JMP-100 watt lead into a 4x10 cabinet. The ms10 sounds great after I took out the extra diodes in the drive circuit. it has the added coolness of the attack punch and edge which are like equalization settings. The Metal Charger has 3 JRC4558d chips in it. These are magical get em while you can!

I,am using it with my fender super six reverb and seymour duncan convertible amp.
All sounds are there...thinking of buddy guy/ jeff beck/srv/hendrix/ even robben ford......

I play mostley Blues/ p-funk/fusion/ rockabilly... the metal charger is the pedal believe it or not. I play for over 23 years , i started when i was 9 years old. If the pedal is broken i would get a nother one. It,s one hell of a pedal folk,s the low feature is pretty cool.
I compared it with all tubescreamers but the metalcharger is the absolut winner also cool with delay

the problem with this pedal is that it makes a loud buzzing sound on the amp when not playing..i wouldn't use it at a gig or show for that reason.but other wise the pedal is easy to use and easy to set.

the edge knob make the diference, ms10 is fair superior than boss distortion pedal, you can play blues, rock, hard rock, and death metal with it, but if you use maximum distorion is noisy as hell, you won't play with such as noise

Pretty good to be a pedal distortion effect. With most of the pedals you have the problem that when you achive the distortion you have a dramatic loss of basses: turn the punch to the max value to solve this !!
The Edge is a good control of the mid-high frequencies: maybe best at max value on this pedal.
The attack is useful too (I prefear a middle setting): it seams to be "touch sensitive".
I don't like a lot the shape of the distortion: muddy and dirty.
It is provided by 3 simple clipping circuits made of 2 diodes, opposite each other: the first circuit is on the first gain stage (made with an operational amplifier), the second is on the second gain stage (op. amp.), the third is at the output of the second gain stage, connected to the ground.
Well: remove the second and the third two-diodes clipping circuits (very simple trick) !!!!!
In this way you can have less distortion at low drive settings, more bite and definition at high drive values, more volume !!!! The sound will be similar to TS-9 but with the the tone knobs of MS10 !!!
E-mail me for schematics, if you want.

Pretty web site. You can find tons of schematics and instructions of the Tube Screamer series in the Web, but not official releases !!! The kind of the distortion of MS10 is not properly the same of TSs, but it is very similar: so have a look...

20 years of playing, hundreds of gigs and sessions and some studio recordings. It doesn't matter if you use a three single coils guitar or two humbuckers: a good pedal has to work fine always, and Ibanez MS10 does !! Expecially with the modifications I tried. Consider that Tube Screamer costs more, more, more than MS10, and the result, after the mods, is very, very, very similar !!!!

5 knobs. different from normal. level, distortion, attack (presence), punch (lows) edge (highs)
took a little while to figure out what attack was, since it's not a mid range control, then i read reviews and said, "oh, presence".
battery cover it the foot switch, very accessable.

very nice, really low lows, soft to hard distortion. it takes a while to get the sound you want. i fiddled and fiddled. i wrote down sounds i liked on a peice of paper and stuck it under the battery cover, so i know what they are and i can come back to them. be warned: if one knob moves the slightest bit, make sure you know where it was, because they're very sensitive.

Easy to use but getting a good tone out of any thing with more than two controls takes some time and expermentation. This pedal has five controls : level, distortion, attack, punch and edge. It has one in and one out and is powered by a 9v or an adapter.

I'm tested this with a Fender American Std. Strat into a Blackface Bandmaster. I also tried it with a Kramer Sustainor. This pedal sounds incredible!!!! The attack knob is a presence control, the edge is for the highs and the punch is for the lows. This pedal has about as much lows as a Boss Metal Zone!!! The sound is very full and the distortion ranges from a clean boost to full metal. The tone contro;s are the beauty of this pedal though instead of being numbered 1-10 they are numbered -5 to +5 and actually cut and boos the various frequencies. The edge knob tends to run a little shrill but the bass in the punch makes up for it. The lack of a midrange control can be limiting though.

A great pedal, comparable with a Boss Metal Zone. I'd buy it again if the price was right. It could use a midrange control though.

Getting a good sound out of this unit takes some work. When I first started playing with the "attack," "punch," and "edge" knobs, I thought that they were parametric EQs. They don't behave at all like the standard "bass," "mid," and "treble," instead, each one has a wide range of effect over the sound, particulary in the last 1/4 turn, when they get kind of extreme.

I am using guitars with EMGs with this effect, running into Boogie amps.
The unit is as quiet as most Ibanez and Boss distortion pedals, which is to say that on a scale of 1-10, it's about an 8. When the distortion level is cranked, it's still relatively free of hiss.
With the distortion at low levels, the unit still sounds good. It has a warm, tubey sound.
The controls have such a wide range that it took me a lot of tweaking to get the sound I needed. I use 2-3 different distortion/OD pedals through a mixing unit, so I can just punch in different sounds. I've got this one set up for a high-gain rhythym sound and it sounds great. It could use a little more sustain, but it's so damn versatile that I can't complain.
With the "edge" knob all the way up, the sound is screechy. This sound could find it's way into an industrial song. Crank the "punch" knob and the sound is huge and boomy. For most people, these sounds may not be useable, but they are there for people who want to experiment with over-the-top tones.

This is one of those pedals from between the 9 and 10 series. They are built like tanks. I like the top-loading battery compartment. Since I have all my pedals on a rack shelf now, I can't rate them for their long-term stompability.

I play many styles of music. This pedal is great for metal, punk, blues, funk, and rock. The range of sounds is amazing. At $35, it was a steal!
I've been playing for over 15 years, and I've played all kinds of gear, including over three dozen distortion effects. This one's a keeper.
If I lost this pedal, I would seek out another one.
What I love about this pedal is its versatility. It's got some great standard sounds, but can give me something off-the-wall when I want it. What I don't like about it is that if I find a sound I like and the knobs get turned, it's a bitch to get that sound back again.
I bought this unit on eBay. I got it because I'm always on the lookout for something different. This was a major score.

5 knobs on a fuzztone? why not? the only problem will be remembering which tone knob's which (attack is pre-distortion treble, punch is post-distorion bass, edge is post-distortion treble. i think.), but it's hard not to dial up a great tone. the only other problem is that the battery can be hard to remove. pry it out with a heavy fender pick. it's the only thing they're good for.

extrordinary.it's based on the old metal screamer and the super metal pedals ("metal" as in hendrix, page and blackmore, not 80's-90's metal) and it's a bit brighter than either. i own a Butler RealTube, and they're identical when i A/B them (the Butler box is a bit quieter when gain is maxed).

ibanez is the only company i've ever known of that uses high-impact plastic that's truly high-impact. the input/output jacks may need to have the solder reinforced after a few years, as i did to mine.

i've never had to contact ibanez in the 14 years since i bought my first product from them (a "lawsuit" strat copy). where i come from, that would be considered a good thing.

i've owned two, and i can't imgine what posessed me to sell my last one. for 25 bucks, it cloned my damn RealTube. i've owned nearly every ibanez distortion from the tube screamer on up, and only the super metal surpasses the metal charger for tone, warmth and dynamics. all you need for killer overdrive is this and a tube screamer (except for the TS10, which is a rare lemon).
