A little more complicated than the original 1 knob phasetone PT-999 with the extra 'feedback' knob, but compared to some it's dead easy.

I had an older, metal knob calligraphy text version that predates the PT-707 model number. I was actually quite surprised by how quiet this pedal was when activated. With the feedback set low it sounds very similar to the original 1 knob phasetone. 70s 4-stage vibe about it. No annoying volume drop like you get on vintage Small Stones. Yet, much like the colour switch on Small Stones, I found the feedback knob to be rather useless. Whilst making the phaser effect throb and sound more whacky (great!), it seemed to really dull the tone of your signal in the process, as if you'd rolled the tone knob on you guitar all the way down.
I got mine dead cheap (US$22 - the seller listed a real low BIN), but it's certainly not worth the money they seem to regularly pull on ebay (US$100+). Inferior in sound to the 76 Small Stone and Boss PH-1R I've had. Though my memory is fading I'd probably take the Boss PH-2 over it.

It was over 20 years old and still going strong. Heavily chipped so it had obviously seen a lot of use over the years. Only flaw was that the feeback knob was slightly scratchy.

For the price I paid it was a bargain, and I made quite a tidy profit resale, but overall not a spectacularly good pedal. Just average. The dullness in the feedback made the effect unmusical to my ears (and I love crazier sounds, like the Res maxed on the PH-1R), and so it was not more versatile than the original 1 knob phasetone. Not as warm and buttery as the Small Stone, and certainly lacked the sound quality and versatility of the Boss PH-1R. Much better phasers out there for your money.

How difficult can it be, two knobs Speed & Feedback. I got the one with the plastic knobs which is the 2nd version. I also got the first version with the steel knobs which is crap!@#$! compared to this one

Well I use this pedal with various gibson Les Paul's. Its not noisy at all but does sound a little weak at lower settings for a resonable sound open it up.
I play through a Marshall JCM800 2203. When playing clean the pedal sounds great (which is most of the time). Sadly as soon as I change channels aaahhh@#$%#@

Undependable!!! These old boxes seem rock solid but looks can be deceiving, they are sadly built and wired, actually my guitar tech told me that Ibanez actually used the cheapest parts they could get there hands on when building these. The first series (steel knobs) was a absolute shite, though it sounded alright these were often produced with defects, so be carefull when buying!!! - thats why they are now quite rare (thanx bob for the history).
I gig big venues, 800 to 1500 people. When you cant afford making a absolute fool out of yourself bring a back up.

I have never dealt with directly with Ibanez. My guitar tech takes care of it, which is basically all he does because the piece of crap always breaks down.

I play rock and use this peddle mostly for clean interludes because this is the only way it sounds good. Been playing for 20 years and own loads of gear, all Gibsons and Marshalls. If it was stolen or lost i dont think I will buy another one seeing that these things are slowly geeting more expensive and are very unreliable.
The thing I love about this pedal is that it sounds great playing clean, all the rest I hate.

Simplicity itself. Two controls, rate and depth, and an on-off stomp switch. I have the original with the aluminum knobs, which are easily turned with your foot so you don't have to stoop down to mess with it.
One point off for lack of a status indicator - I think the later version added an LED so you could tell when the thing was on - and for not having a modern 9V connector. (Not that I blame Ibanez; those connectors weren't in common use when this thing was made.) My solution to the latter: I filed a little notch in the side and brought the 9V battery clip outside the box (with some strain relief for the fragile wires) so I can I power it off of my pedalboard.

I've used this pedal with acoustic and electric guitars and a variety of amps for years. I now use it with a Martin DC-1E, a Martin J12-16 with a Fishman under-saddle pickup, and a Fender Showmaster through a Fender Stage 185 amp (Guitar > Crybaby 535 > PhaseTone II > AD-9 > amp). I've also used it with a microphone to get a singing-through-a-Leslie effect. It's very quiet; there's a tiny bit of hiss if you turn the depth up to the max, but never enough to hear over the music - although its effect will accentuate any hiss you send in on the input side (this was evident when using it with a mic, as it picked up ambient room noise).
I love the effect, especially at low to moderate speeds. I use it for a spacy, psychedelic feel. With the depth set at minimum and the rate very low, you almost can't detect it but it adds a feeling of spatial expansion. At high speeds and low to moderate depth, you get sort of a bubbly, underwater effect. At the high end of the depth scale, it gets ridiculous at any speed - people start looking for flying saucers and little green men.
I sometimes wish the depth could be set a little lower, as it's never what you'd call subtle with the speed setting above the middle of the range. Then again, I hardly use the high end of the speed range.

As others have noted, it's built like a tank. You could drop it off a tall building and run over it with a truck, and it wouldn't notice. I have never carried a backup or felt like I needed one.

Never had any reason to seek customer support for this or my other Ibanez pedal.

I played solo gigs doing a wide range of acoustic, blues, and classic rock for about 15 years. After a 20-year hiatus, I'm now playing in a blues/classic/alternative band. I dug this pedal out of the attic and it still sounds like it did in 1985. It was like finding an old friend.
This pedal is an excellent match for seventies "space music" a la Pink Floyd, and at the right settings, can add a subtle glistening effect to an acoustic 6- or 12-string in a wide variety of uses. If it were lost or stolen, I'd search high and low for one just like it. I've never heard another pedal that matches its tone.
Ibanez ought to reissue this baby, preferably in their now-standard form factor (this one is about 4" x 5"). It's a sweet pedal.

I use this with mainly les pauls and a flying v, its not noisy at all in the fuzz/static sense, there is a sweet spot if u turn the speed up to about 8, and the feedback on 10, where the phase is phasing just the right speed to pretty much endlessly sustain your guitar with lovely sounding amp feedback. Think crazy Tom Morello style solos :) But i love its clean tone mostly, really nice thick powerful liquidy vintage phase, far better than any digital effects, go for the analogue!

Its huge and made out of solid steel, this is the first series with the steel knobs too, this pedal could take some abuse thats for sure, you could knock someone out with it i'm wagering. I do gig without a backup, but i don't have a power supply (the 1970s one ibanez made to fit it is huge and hard to find I guess) So its batteries only, and it does tend to go through them fairly fast if you're leaving it on all day :P

I play metal and rock, I love this pedal mainly for the texture it gives clean guitar, I tryed alot of phasers on multi effects and some newer analogue pedals, this came up on top, even though it doesn't have 10 or so knobs, i like its approach, u can't go wrong with this. If it was stolen i'd cry because i probably wouldn't be able to find another one. I love everything about this pedal, how it looks, how it sounds, how it suits me. Nice!

Two knobs - speed and feedback. If you're having trouble operating this one, go look for the PT999 Phase Tone with one knob.

Sounds very similar in effect characteristic to the older Ibanez phasers, such as the PT999 and PT909 Phase Tones. A very liquid sounding phase; very different from the later phasers that have a more dried-out jet whooshing sound. Sounds very nice, but alters the guitar tone significantly.

Big old die-cast beast. If you've seen the newer, wide body Maxon pedals, this looks like one of them. Looks and feels extrememly well built. The stomp switch is the DPDT round button that's found on wah pedals everywhere, also. Compared to the PT999 or PT909; the 707 looks as if it was designed for ill-tempered children due to it's sturdiness.

There were two PT707 - the first edition that had the nice aluminum knobs, and the second one that went to black plastic knobs and an LED indicator. The old Phase Tones seem to be fairly popular in the vintage effects community; I'd love to compare one of these against an MXR Phase 90 or Phase 100. The effect itself is very pleasant; not harsh like alot of newer phasers.
