Great pedal, easy to use. To get started I recommend turning the level and drive to 3 o'clock. Turn all of the eq knobs to 1 o'clock. From there it is just a matter of tweaking the eq to your liking.

The Low, High, Mid, and Mid Frequency knobs are incredibly sensitive and will allow for a huge range of sounds. Both my Schecter C1 plus (Seymour Duncan Jazz,Distortion) and my ESP Viper 300 (EMG85,81) sound great with this pedal. I can achieve sounds similar to the crunchy Mesa Boogie with a high mid and mid frequency setting. If you crank the bass and back off the mid you can get a brutal 5150 type sound. I run the DEQ2 directly to the input of my Behringer V-Amp which is set to a "clean tube" sound. Don't try to overdrive with this pedal, just run it through a clean channel and it will blow you away.

The DEQ2 is not made as sturdy as a Boss Metalzone, but is perfectly reliable. I'm sure it has a limit on how many stomps it can take but I am not gigging so I can't say for sure how it would handle on the road.

I mainly play metal, which is the only style I can recommend this pedal for. I have been playing for 14 years as mainly a hobbyist and for computer recording. The best sounds I have heard (on my extremely limited budget) have come from modeling amps or Amplitube/GuitarRig computer programs. The Johnson DEQ2 is the first pedal I actually liked, and I have tried the EH Metal Muff and Boss Metal Zone, both of which I can't recommend. I bought the DEQ2 on ebay for $25 including shipping, as far as I'm concerned that is the deal of the century.

Awesome metal distortion pedal! Similar to Boss Metal Zone, but with better sound quality. I bought it used without the manual, but as soon as I treid it out it sounded great. No manual needed.

I use an Epi Les Paul & SUNN Model T, SUNN Sceptre, SUNN 412L cab with this pedal. It's noisy if you're not playing. If you're not going to play, then switch it off or get a noise suppressor if you are concerned. My favorite distortion & fuzz pedals are noisy when you stop playing the guitar. That's what the on/off switch is for. Like I mentioned above, it sounds like a Boss Metal Zone but better! Sweet metal sounds can be reaped from this tank, plus lots of sound-shaping (EQ) possibilities. If you're looking for that "just at breakup sweetspot" then don't use this pedal, or any other distortion pedal. Go out and get a tube amp and crank it up. However, if you want a saturated amazing sounding metal distortion sound, then you should pick up this pedal. The price is right.

You can depend on it! I am rather impressed with the Johnson pedals I have tried out. Gigging without backups is like driving a car without a spare tire. I guess it depends on how lucky you feel.

I would buy it again if it was lost or stolen because I have been searching for this distortion sound for a long time (Boss Metal Zone came close, but no cigar). Plus you can't beat the price. I play in an instrumental stoner/metal trio and this pedal really helps me out when I need to play more defined notes. I use a green sovtek big muff most of the time, but sometimes that's too sludgy for what I need and this pedal allows me to play more precise notes & leads with just the right distorted sound.

Very easy to use,can get many good sounds but some may find it a little awkward because of the parametric mids.I actually got this pedal new in box with instructions, very good, especially for those who are not familiar with extensive eq options.I reccomend this to anyone new to using pedals, very good instuctions.

The sound quality is great,I play metal and this is what this pedal was made for.Anyone wanting a versitle pedal are not going to be happy with this.It is just like my metalzone it does metal and sounds similar to the metalzone, but it doesnt sond as nasally.Eq section is fantastic on this unit. The only prblem i have with this unit is if you turn level knob too high it makes a lot of noise, but no worse than any other pedal does.I run it through a randall rg100es head and marshall 4x12 cab with celestion vintage 30s straight into amp with a boss ns2 noise supressor which takes care of the noise problem, killer tone.

For the price you cant beat this pedal, only paid 44.00 new on ebay.I own many other pedals,metalzone,deathmetal/digitech,and this pedal johnson deq2 is as good as any.I really kind of favor this pedal over the others because it sound a little more natural than they do, and its a lot cheaper.Ive been playing for ten years and have used a lot of pedals, and would rate this as one of my alltime favorites, perfect pedal for metal heads.

Easy enough to use once you realize that there's a control for the midrange frequency as well as midrange level.

I'm using a strat with '54 pickups through verious low wattage tube amps, including a 3 watt champ-like unit. Unit is not ovverly noisy, but the sound is terrible. There's no clean to speak of even with the distortion all the way down. The high frequency EQ control seems to be band limited so that all the glassy highs are completely gone. It sounds like you're listening throug various size toilet ppaper rolls, all mid-rangey and no upper highs. The distortion quality is terrible, with a flat farty characteristic. Only useable for extremely distorted tones. Forget about the "just at breakup" sweet spot, and forget about the tonal characteristics of your guitar. This thing not only colors but obliterates the guitar's natural tone, regardless of EQ setting.

The idea of a distortion unit with three band EQ and sweepable midrange is a good one, but this thing sounds terrible! The benefit of such a configuration should be a great measure of control over the amount and tonal characteristics of the distortion. Not so with this unit. I get better sunds with distortion and/or overdrive units with only one tone control. Like too many products nowadays, there's no gradual progression into the distortion range. Too much, too soon and way too crappy. Not a good sound at any price. I was really hoping for something with a measure of control over distortion amount and tone. I'll keep looking. I can't recommend this unit.

Using Les paul/Strat with Princeton 65 amp - Guitar -> Deq2 -> amp. Very good range of distorted sounds available. Controls for Level (volume), Distortion, Low, Mid & High + Mid Freq (allows scooping out of middles). You need to use the Mid freq/Mid control carefully as they can conter each other out.

Bought via Ebay - for the price, it's outstanduing value. The sounds it can deliver range from bluesey overdrive through vintage 70/80's rock to Metal - cannot recommend too highly - if you find one, buy it, you won't be disappointed!!
