If you're using this with the wrong amp for the wrong music then you might have issues getting it to sound right. For most users though, it shouldn't be difficult. Like other fuzz pedals though, more time spent with the unit will yield rewarding results.

I compared this to my USA Big Muff and the Foxey is less bloated with a tighter bottom end. Less mudd. More gain/fuzz AND volume. The tone control seems to have extended range (compared to Big Muff) but I never found the extreme ends of the spectrum to be all that useful - still nice if you need it. The pedal sounds great. Mine sings and the notes bloom into harmonic feedback at low volumes. Seems to have more touch sensitivity. Easy to get different sounds just by pick attack. Makes my strat (with '69 reissue pickups sound like a thousand pound violin. Huge. Makes the strat sound like it has humbuckers. Works well with a Les Paul too just alot fuzzier! It's noisy but only because the it's such a high gain circuit that it just amplifies EVERYTHING!! Kind of a one trick pony BUT with some variation once you learn how to use it. I find I liked it better the more I played with it. (I've used my Fender USA strat with '69 reissue pickups, Japan Squire Strat with Dimarzio H3-3 in bridge, Les Paul with Seymour Duncan JB in bridge, Marshall JCM 800 2204 with 4-12 cab and DR Z MAZ 18 JR. I usually run the amps clean with this pedal. I don't stack with overdrives but found that the tone of the pedal gets a little creamier with a bit of amp overdrive. The lead tone with my CE-2 Chorus and Ibanez analog delay is Gilmour heaven!
Works very well as a rythem pedal but in more of Grunge/Alternative vein.

Only had for a week. I will say that this pedal is about as well built a boutique pedal as I've ever bought. Michael at MJM's new cases and designs are a big improvement to an already good thing. After seeing the quality of the innards I would rely on this if needed.

Very easy to use. Simple layout. There are a lot of variations of tones available but it is easy to find sweet spots. Knob configuration is similar to Big Muff, which it is designed after. Has LED light is newer feature from what I hear, had gold casing and off white knobs. No adapter included.

For what it is, it sounds very good. I haven't been able to compare to others, never had an original Muff (and I hear they are hit and miss on the tone side). I did the Pumkinish thing (didn't do Santana or others like I thought it would?). Used with Fender clone amps, and a strat. True Bypass seems to work great. I think it's a very nice pedal if your after that tone (90's alternative), probably one of the best out there and it's probably made better than any Muff. Plus true bypass and smaller package.

I had to sell this pedal due to bills and I will be trying out general guitar gadgets version next time around, it's a little cheaper? Been playing since 1990, messed around prior to that - you know the drill Sabbath chords, etc. I play alternative, Blues, and noise (this pedal is good for Noise and Alternative). Overall a great tool, not necessary unless your into this type of music. Price is only flaw but it's quality so it's probably worth it. I enjoy talking about gear so if you have a question I'll attempt to answer it if you email me.

I'm using it with a 1990 Les Paul Studio(equipped with Harmonic Design Humbuckers) through a Victoria 4x10 tweed Bassman.
FINALLY a pedal that nails it. I have tried way too many Big Muff style pedals (botique or otherwise) trying to nail down the sound that they are so famous for. I've tried the new reissues, old reissues, botique repros, even original muffs (every iteration except the tri-knob), and NOTHING touches this pedal. It's a little noisy compared to some other stompers but it's no more than I can handle.
There is tons of fuzz on tap here - which is the way it should be (I've got a MJM Blues Devil for the lighter stuff - although that can get pretty mean as well). You can take it from a light puffy fuzz at the low end of the gain knob right into the seventh layer of hell at the other end (I tend to keep it around 11 o-clock). The pedal also provides tons of level boost if you desire - this works very well in conjunction with the amp's natural compression (Tri-knob muffs are famous for this). The tone knob has a HUGE sweep on it and your tendancy will be to find that very narrow area that works with your rig, and reserve the rest of the sweep for more utilitarian applications.
This pedal responds VERY well to an individual's playing nuances - an unusual trait for any pedal, but especially a fuzz. It's got tons of low end punch and is full of harmonic content. The tone just flows forth in a way that's just defies explanation.

MJM is a fantastic company and the more pedals I try by this guy the more I'm impressed. I have only emailed MJM once and he replied within hours. It did take me quite a while to get the pedal after I ordered it from musictoyz.com. I'd order it directly from MJM to get the best service/turnaround time.

This pedal is just plain incredible. I don't like delving into the right-brain side of things when it comes to reviews, but I can't really keep it in. Everyone needs to experience this pedal. The Big Muff tone is very specific and you may or may not like it - but make no mistake, this is the real deal.

This is probably the best Big Muff sound you can get in a pedal. It has a very sweet lo-fi sound. It is a bit noisy just like a Big Muff should be but it doesn't get in the way at all. The components seem to be mostly cheap ceramic caps and carbon resistors, but whatever the components are, they perform the magic.
Overall, compared to the Big Muffs I have tried (Green Russian, Black Russian, NYC Reissue, Homemade Ram's Head version), this one has more growl and a much better response in the bassier end of the tone control.
With most Big Muffs, I tend to use the tone in the 1-3 o'clock position to give it more edge. But with the Foxey, I tend to explore the full range of the pedal. It has a great rumbling sounds when you are playing the low strings. If you want a great Muff sound, look no further. This is one of the best fuzz pedals I have played.

It seems to be built well enough. The paint already chipped off on one of the corners, and one of the decals corners seems to have lifted a bit. Cosmetically, it might not survive so well, but it is reliable enough to gig without a backup.
The insides of it are well put together. Although the PCB and battery clip is connected via glue that doesn't seem to be overly strong. It hasn't failed me yet though, so it's hard to say whether it is a good interior design or not.
The box is a Hammond C-size which is extremely durable.

I bought this directly from MJM in Canada. He asked for a money order. I sent it off, and he already had the pedal prepared and ready for shipping (with the blue LED and color of my choice) as soon as the money order arrived in his mailbox. I believe he shipped it the same day my money order came in, and 2 days later I had it on my doorstep.
He was very kind and helpful over email and I believe he will help me out if I ever have any questions or problems with my Foxey Fuzz.

A decent Big Muff costs about $50 plus another 10-20 to get it true bypassed. The end result is probably good enough for most Muff lovers.
The Big Muff is a pedal that has always been a favorite, and an essential part of my rig. For that reason, the Foxey Fuzz is great value. It allows me to explore more of the Muff sound, and the overall quality (build, sound, etc...) makes this pedal very worth it, imo.

three knobs representing Fuzz, Volume, and Gain.

I'm running the Foxey Fuzz with a Yamaha Pacifica through
a 5150 halfstack recently retubed with JJ 6L6's. When the gain
is cranked this pedal can be a wee bit noisy, but that is to
be expected from a Fuzz pedal.
One thing you will find with this pedal is that it can achieve
a ton of different Fuzz sounds if you learn how to tweak it with
your amp. Goes from Hendrixy to Black Sabbathy to Smashing Pumpkinsy
with some smart tweaking but generally speaking the sounds you get out of this pedal are pleasing.
As I said I use this pedal in conjuction with a 5150 halfstack and I'm very happy with this setup currently.

gig it without a backup.

I play a variety of different styles ranging from Death/Black/Speed/Hair metal to a bit of prog rock to
some blues.
I've been playing for about 3.5 yrs now and I own a
5150 halfstack, JJ Eurotubes, Boss CS-2 Compressor, Boss NS-2
Noise Supressor, Boss DD-5 Delay, Toadworks Death Rattle, Akai
Intelliphase, and a Crybaby Wah (being true bypassed).
If this pedal got lost or stolen I would buy it again in a second.
I love it because its a nice versatile pedal, also easy to use.
I love doing Sabbath with this pedal, tons of fun.
This pedal has helped me come up with some material that I wouldnt
normally have thought of. Pedals can change your creative process
and that's why I love them, a different flavour of something you
love (i.e the 5150).
Go out and give this pedal a shot.

I'm using a fender srat plus with lase sensors into a Fender twin reverb..
When I first tried it I just thought it sounded like my green sovtek big muff only better. But then I compared it to the big muff and I couldn't believe it. It sounds like a big muff only much much much better..
Mig Muff:
Has only one sound
Doesn't have true bypass
Doesn't have a dc adaptor
Is way too big
Doesn't allow you to roll the volume back, the sound gets toneless and wholly..
Is probably made by monkeys.
MJM Foxey Fuzz:
Has only one sound, but variations of that one sound, you can also roll off the volume and get really old overdrive/dist sounds that takes you back to the '60 and '70... hey look there's Jimmy Page.
has true bypass.
has a dc adaptor
Is small and cool looking with silky smooth knobs and a sturdy stomp switch.
Is hopefully not made by monkeys.
Can get a lot more fuzz than the big muff.
Sounds really tight and focused.
If your going to buy a big muff.. don't. Buy this instead.

It's very easy to get a good sound out of the Foxey Fuzz as, just like a Big Muff, there are only three knobs. The tone knob is very responsive and offers a wide variety of different tones ranging from thick and bassy to a sizzling type fuzz.

All I can say is believe the hype, this is the best big muff sound I have ever heard. I've owned three Big Muff reissues (green, black, and USA) and the Foxey Fuzz slays them all. It has more of everything in all the right places as far as tone goes in comparison to the EH Big Muff Reissues, and the workmanship is top notch.
I also have a Lovetone Big Cheese and had a Z. Vex Fuzz Factory, and while they can get some Big Muff type sounds, they can't compare to the Foxey Fuzz and what it can do for that type of sound. They have their own unique fuzz sounds...but for the ultimate Big Muff sound, the Foxey Fuzz is it. It has a lot of gain and sustain on tap, and a huge tonal range so you can get a wide variety of sounds as I mentioned under 'Ease of Use'. I also like how it cleans up when I roll off the volume on my guitar, good for chords and rhythm work and then you can turn up the volume all the way and get nice smooth sustained leads. I haven't noticed any problems putting non-true bypass and buffered pedals before it in my pedal chain, which is a good thing.
If you want the Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream" guitar sound, the Foxey Fuzz will do it with ease. David Gilmour, the White Stripes, My Bloody Valentine, Catherine Wheel (the songs "Satellite" and "Delicious" from the Adam & Eve album), Mudhoney, etc. anyone who uses a Big Muff...the Foxey Fuzz will nail those sounds and do it better because it's a better made and better sounding pedal than the EH.

It one of the best built and classiest looking pedals I own, it's a nice gold hammerite color and has a super bright red LED. The enclosure it is in really isn't all that big, I don't see why people make a fuss about it, it's a little tall but I actually prefer it like that because it's easier to turn on. It's a sturdy pedal, and the workmanship inside is very clean and well done. I don't expect any problems.

Before I found a good used deal on the Foxey Fuzz I was going to buy one direct from MJM. He was always very helpful and responsive to the questions I had in my e-mails. If I ever have a problem with my Foxey Fuzz, which is highly unlikely given the level of quality, I'm certain that getting it repaired by MJM would be no problem. He has a new website at www.mjmguitarfx.com and you can contact him to order pedals through it.

Super easy to get a good sound out of it if you are into that vintage Big Muff sound. I had an early seventies PI Big Muff that had abosoloutly no tonal range. It was either full treble or bass. With the Foxey Fuzz I get a better range of tone as well as enjoying the over the top fuzz and volume boost

I use this set up with tow amps running in conjunction from an ABY box. A Marshall JCM 800 head, (w/6L6's), Marshall bass amp 4X12 and a '72 Marshall 4X12 with Greenbacks. My other amp is a "blackfaced" Super Reverb. My guitars are a '65 Fender Jazzmaster, '64 Fender Jazzmaster (w/ Seymour Duncan Vintage Jazzmaster pup in neck and Seymour Duncan JB in bridge) and a '80 Gibson Heritage series (with Seymour Duncan JB in bridge). The Foxey Fuzz is noisy as hell but that's what I wanted. I use it exclusivly for leads and noisy Sonic Youthy stuff. I have the volume between ten o clock and full, gain on full with the tone around eight. You can get a really good blusey lead with the gain and volume dropped down but I perfer my MJM Blues Devil for that. I am not really into getting the sounds of my favorite players I have a lot but if you like J. Mascis' tone you will really dig this. If you are looking for a glassy tone don't look here as this really colours the sounds but the sound is also influenced by your guitar and amp set up.

I play punk rock/ rock and roll in my band and like to jam on bluesy kind of stuff with freinds. The Foxey Fuzz really works for me because it has a great singing tone for leads and because of it's noise I can also use it for making some serious white noise in conjunction with my wah. My band can demand a lot of feedback so I have no problem with the noise. Other pedals I own are Boss Digital Delay, Maestro Phaser, Maestro Fuzztain, Whirlwind ABY, Sabine tuner, MJM Blues Devil and MJM Ulysees Wah. If it were stolen I would definetly by another one because it has become a big part of my sound and I don't like the Big Muff reissues and I think this has better tone than the mid seventies Big Muff I had. I would compare this to the first rams head series Big Muff that it is modeled after. The extra bonus though is it's true bypass. I have gotten the mod though and not the cavity that Michael builds so I didn't get an LED light which I miss. He did say he would put one in for me though. It will gurantee to bring reall dirt and agression to anyones playing

I'll not write reviews to say if the pedal is transparent or not, if it color the sound or stuffs like this. This is a personal review, about a personal taste, and I?m writing here my own opinion only. I have more than 30 pedals and there are some old ones that are noise and not true bypass, but when engaged sounds so good as the new ones with true bypass. In fact, all the reviews I?m going to place at Harmony Central regarding effects will be regarding the pedal sound. Also, I cannot describe a noise pedal, because it?s a personal taste. Again, there are a few pedals that are very noisy, but I cannot live without them. Most of the guitar players I like are from the old school, and they didn?t had true bypass or super high end no noise pedals. So, I?ll try to be as helpful as possible on my reviews.
I use this pedal with strat, tele and les paul. It works great with any of them. Amps are Marshall heads, Matchless, Fender tweeds and Victoria.
The volume control(as the other MJM pedals I have) has huge boost. I have to be careful every time I plug the pedal making sure it?s not past 12 o?clock. The gain control ad an amazing amount of gain, even on low settings. Above 2 o?clock, the gain control ad a very grit fuzz to the sound. And the tone control is one of the more effective that I?ve heard! You can get a very thin ?mosquito? like fuzz with the tone full on or one of the darkest, or warm, fuzz sound with the tone rolled full back.
I?ve found one of my favorites settings with the Volume on 10:00, Tone on 9:00 and Gain on full. This way you can get a supper singing sustain (this unit sustains forever!!!!) and dial with the amount of gain/tone only with your guitar potentiometers.
I?ve been trying to get a fuzz that could give me a huge sustain, that was harmonically rich, and that wouldn?t sound fizzy. I?ve found it on this Foxey Fuzz. And I?m been really pleased with this pedal. Specially when I use it for slows solos(think Gilmour) with the signal going => Vibe > Foxey Fuzz > Analog Delay(with the treble rolled off). It also reminds me Marc Ford in songs like ?Girl From A Pawnshop?. Something else I like to do with this pedal is to plug the London Fuzz + Foxey Fuzz (both on at the same time) and have a huge psycho gain. It sounds very noise this way, but once again, I have this own thought : ?No noise, NO TONE!?.
Yes, this unit is a Big Muff Clone. And I like it better than the old Big Muff I have. And if you?re looking for a pedal that can scream at high gain setting, whatever you playing(solos, power chords or full chords), with a full bass response, without having the fizzy treble, and that sustains forever, you should check this pedal. I?ve did... and I?m not disappointed!!!
