It's a slightly modified Rangemaster clone, so there is no need for instructions or an IQ over 60. This pedal has a dial for amount of boost, a bright/dark mini-switch, and a DC jack. A good sound is fairly easy to acquire, provided you are using a quality amp and at least a "decent" guitar.

Sound Quality : 10
My setup: FENDER Custom Shop '69 Stratocaster (stock) or a GIBSON Les Paul Double Cutaway Studio (stock Gibson 490R/498T pickups) into - in no particular order, and not all at the same time - the MJM RM Booster, Robert Keeley modified Cry Baby wah, a Robert Keeley modified IBANEZ TS808 reissue, , BOSS CE-2 chorus, FULLTONE mini Deja Vibe (the older silver one), ROGER MAYER Octavia, IBANEZ AD-9 delay, and it ends at a VOX AC30 CC2. With a simple setup of wah, overdrive or distortion, and this boost, one can cover a lot of bases. I really like it. Not too much noise, but not a "clean" boost, either. I didn't want a "clean" boost, though, as I'm going through a AC30. This one has just the amount of "hair" that I wanted. Sound is difficult to describe, but for starters, go to the website and listen to the sound clips. I'm so pleased with the RM Booster that I will likely buy one of the MJM fuzz boxes, too.

Reliability : 10
Mike M. at MJM Guitar FX takes pride in his work. This stompbox is made as well or better than any of the other boxes I possess. I have no worries about the reliability of an MJM product. Still, there are few guarantees in this short life, so if you are the fretful sort, simply buy another as a backup.

I exchanged several emails with Mike before I decided to purchase. Perhaps I shouldn't share this bit of information with you (so as to cause Mike the extra workload), but I made a couple of special requests of Mike and he was very generous in accepting my requests. So essentially, I now have a box designed to my personal desires. Most people who have a product to sell will offer their product "as is", take it or leave it. It's nice to encounter a guy like Mike.

My styles? I can't say that I drift to any one player, band, genre, or "style", but I do like to play 70s rock & metal, blues, punk (Trower, Sabbath, AC/DC, Stones, Howlin' Wolf, etc.). I can use the RM in all of these genres, to SOME extent or another. Let's be honest, though. Tone is subjective. Additionally, we cannot expect a stompbox to take us to our idea of "tone heaven". Close? Maybe. But most of what we hear is processed through our fingers. Like most electric instrument players, and most of us on this forum, I own more gear than I genuinely need. I know a man who is a professional classical musician, a graduate of a prestigious conservatory, who still spends over forty hours each week PRACTICING. (You know the old question: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" Answer: "Practice, practice, practice." And yes, he has played at Carnegie Hall.) This by himself- not including his hours with the orchestra. Scales, and all the rest. He makes music with his bass, a bow, and his body. What a quality tone, too. Simply beautiful. So, when I read these reviews and the reviewer complains about the product, I always wonder what he expects the stompbox to do for him. Sure, if one spends $30 on an effect, maybe he shouldn't expect a high-end sound. But with most of these boutique pedals, my experience is that if I'm not satisfied with the sound, perhaps it is I who needs to improve- not the stompbox. Anyway, I digress. If you're looking for a high-quality boost in the vein of a Rangemaster, I can wholeheartedly recommend the MJM RM Booster. I'm completely satisfied with it. It does what it's supposed to do, as advertised. So why would I have any reason to give it less than a 10?

My set up is: 1962 alder body RI stratocaster with texas specials, erni ball cable, original 1968 deluxe reverb amp. and the MJM Rm. in between. Not noisy at all, this beautiful made beast soun incredible
similar to The Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, Queen. Serious. I play
guitar for about 30 years, I?ve test a lot of overdrives, fuzzes, dist. pedals in my life, but you can belive me when I say; this is the best of all.

Reliability : 10
Of course I can depend on it.

Very easy to use: Boost knob and a switch to chose between Bright for humbuckers and Dark for single coil. The "Manual" is actually one sheet of paper describing its features, ie; Triple pole footswitch for True Bypass/led status, etc.

Sound Quality : 9
Im using a Les Paul w/Burstbucker V's, B.C.Rich old style Mockingbird with Bill Lawerence 500L pickup in treble position, 2003 Firebird V, and a Fernandes Ravelle Elite with sustainer pickup. Amps are a Marshall 1959 100W Super Lead and for smaller gigs a Traynor YCV40. The unit is relatively quiet, slight hiss once you get to about 3/4 of the way but I found my sweet spot to be between Noon and 2o'clock. The sound coming from this pedal, in a word, is CREAMY!! Really a nice full, thick lead tone. I mainly use it in the Bright position to boost the treble, but when switched to the Dark position it becomes a full range booster. Like I said, Im using humbucker equipped guitars so with a single coil the Dark position would respond differently. This pedal works well with my other pedals. Im using a Teese Limited Edition RMC Wah>Fulltone "Custom Shop"Fulldrive 2>MJM RM Boost>various delays, chorus, etc.

Reliability : 10
I can't see anything going wrong with this pedal,,very well built. No matter how great a pedal is, I ALWAYS gig with a backup, anyone would be crazy not to just because...I own a few of MJM Pedals and never had a problem with any of them.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to and dont think I ever will have to deal with them directly.

I've been playing for 29 years (god am I that old!?) playing Rock and Blues and some older Metal (Sabbath, Priest)I've been through many pedals and will be going through many more before my time is through. I usually sell the ones that I dont use most often, but this RM Booster along with my Fulldrive 2 and Teese wah are definate keepers. I have other pedals that are keepers, but these are my main ones. I would definately buy another RM Booster if it were to be lost or stolen. I have very good faith in MJM products and will be buying more Im sure. I own the MJM Blues Devil which is great for the open mic blues jams I attend. Another great pedal. I was comparing this pedal (RM Booster) with a Keeley Java Boost and as much as I love Robert Keeleys products (His Time Machine Boost is awesome also) I chose the MJM, it just had a fuller sound, no other way to describe it. One other thing I like to add is the price of the MJM pedals are very reasonable. This is why I give it a 10. His pedals are at least $50.00 less than other pedals of this quality. As long as your using this pedal with a good tube amp, you will be extremely satisfied with the MJM RM Booster.

One knob, and one switch. Not much easier than that.

Sound Quality : 10
I use a 1961 SG/Les Paul, 1964 SG with psychedelic Clapton paint job & 2000 Voodoo Strat into various amps, including a Line 6 POD. The RM Booster, which is Mike's designation for a Rangemaster, really nails the old Clapton Bluesbreaker tone. What a lot of people don't realize is that Clapton used the Rangemaster on various Cream songs, as well. If you listen to "White Room" you will hear TWO distinct wah tones, one that sounds fairly normal and one that is very compressed, sweet, and squawky. That is the Rangemaster in front of the Picture Clyde. And while it is known primarily as a treble boost, it boosts the entire spectrum overall. And the really great thing is that even with the one knob on the effect absolutely pinned, the device is reactive to pick attack. That is what you hear on the lead for "Sitting On Top Of The World," and others. Great pedal.

Reliability : 10
Mike's stuff is solidly built and his work is guaranteed. If anything ever goes wrong, he will fix it. Can't get better than that. And I would definitely gig without a backup.

Customer Support : 10
Mike is a pleasure to deal with and I've no complaints in this area.

Overall Rating : 10
I play Hard Rock, Blues, Blues-Rock and Classic Metal, have been playing for 33 years. If the RM were stolen I would absolutely get another without hesitation.
