MOTU 828 MKII

The basic functions of this interface are pretty straightforward if you have a little knowledge of routing and how audio interfaces work in general. It gets a tiny bit harder when you want more advanced options or use it as a stand-alone unit. But the manual is eloborate enough to find out everything you need

I use a Macbook 2.2 Dual Core intel with KRK v4 speakers. And it sounds great. Well, it sounds great when you get it out of the box, but after that you will pull the hairs out of your head out of frustration!! Random extremely loud audio Screeches and dropouts really ruined this thing for me. I couldn't get this thing to work properly, not even in Itunes with nothing connected to any USB port expect the MOTU 828 MkII

I read a LOT of people who had the same problem and not a tiny hint of a steady solution to it. I guess it should properly some way or another, but to me, its not worth it.

Terrible... I just doesn't work. Don't buy it! I beg you. I traded it in for a TC Electronic Konnekt 24D which gave me no problems at all. Just save yourself the frustration

It's allright, they gave me some tips of what could be wrong by mail after just more then a day. None of them worked, and I was allready fed up with this thing after a week.

I don't know HOW, but it is probably a great machine, because some people don't have problems with it. But to me, after having loads of crap with it on my PC and Macbook, I just went back to the store and traded it in for something non-Motu.

But if you have one that does work properly, it's a great machine. Lots of I/O, lots of options, cool LED screen and great sound. But hey, you never know if its gonna be great or complete CRAP.

the big problem of this interface was to make it run stable!!!
i tried everything, soft update, buing new usb cards, it continued
to have drop outs and driver errors!!!!! an interface for more
than 500 euros!!! i discovered the incompatibility of the driver
with some usb2.0 chipps. the only thing been working was an usb card
with VIA chipset!!!! now it works but it was really nervshakin!!!
don t buy the usb 828 take the firewire!!!

Fairly easy to use, you don't really need the manual to navigate the interface, although it would make it easier. The CueMix software obviously makes things easier. I have found the software mixers that come with PreSonus products to be more intuitive and better laid out.

Sound quality is alright. I wasn't blown away by it, but nothing sticks out as being a negative.

Where do I start? I first had an 8pre unit that started acting flaky on me after about a month; kept having to fiddle with it to get my G5 tower to recognize it. I ended up selling that out of frustration, and ended up picking the 828mkII up because someone local was selling it at an incredible price. Yet again, I had issues with it. I had to ship it back to MOTU and now I'm currently waiting on a replacement.

The person who I bought this from also had issues with his original unit (the LCD burned out), and the one he sold me was the replacement from MOTU. Also, my friend who graduated from Berklee almost didn't when his MOTU interface stopped working while he was tracking his final project.

Every time I called, the tech support was pleasant, except they didn't seem like they cared about the problems I was having. They kept wanting to go back to reading the script (did you try updating the drivers?), having me debug and diagnose step by step, even when I had done all the prior to calling. It took me almost 20 minutes to convince the person on the other end my unit was defective (which was confirmed on three different computers).

After that was all said and done, it cost me $80 to order a replacement. It doesn't seem right to me that the unit I bought from a private sale WAS a replacement (in mint condition), yet I have to pay for ANOTHER replacement? That is not good business.

The unit is solid and sounds good when it works, but when all is said and done, I will probably sell this interface when I receive the replacement. I've had way too much trouble with MOTU products to keep using them.

The Cuemix control software is very simple to use, but still professional feeling. The controls on the front of the unit take a little while to get used to, but they are simple and straight forward, giving you access to all of the unit's settings. Initial setup was no problem, truly plug & play in Windows XP Pro. Read the manual and the FAQ's on MOTU's site, and you will learn all you need to know. Direct monitoring in Cubase SX also works great, and with no hassles. The meters on the front panel are great for detecting signals, as far as levels and clipping they aren't very helpful...but at least they are there.

Sound quality is very good. The unit is very quiet, and has uncovered other noisy hardware that had been hidden behind my previous A/D converter's noise. The outputs are also very clean, and work great for running DAW tracks through outboard gear and back in again. I am very satisfied with the sound for its low price.

The unit is very durable, made of thick metal, and really solid feeling. I have been using it for a whole month now, and have had a few Windows related crashes, but I was having the same problem before using the 828mkii. There are no software problems attributed to the 828mkii or its drivers. It always works when I arm tracks and hit record, just like you would expect. There is nothing worse than getting into a sweet groove and you think the computer is recording, but when you hit stop something has gone wrong and you've lost the groove. I haven't had this problem since I plugged in the 828. The only problem I have with the unit is the power supply buzz that other users have reported. I noticed it right away, and was tempted to send it back, but after using it for a day it didn't bother me anymore. This unit sounds so good, works so well, and is so cheap, that I decided the buzz was not worth worrying about. I have AC adapters on effect pedals etc. that buzz louder, and it is not noticable with a computer running nearby. The buzz does not bleed into the converters, they sound pristine. Just remember: This is a $750 10 input A/D converter, not a $3000 dual channel Apogee. It opened a lot of new doors in my studio, I still can't believe you get all this power for under $1000.

I had read hundreds of complaints about MOTU support, so I was not expecting to deal with them at all. I knew the hardware was good, and had the features I wanted. After getting everything setup, I had a question about using a patchbay with the 828's autodetecting balanced/unbalanced inputs. I thought I'd give their email support a shot, not expecting any help at all. I got a lengthy reply that completley answered my question, and even gave me some extra tips for using the outputs and a patchbay. I was suprised at this response because of all the negative reviews MOTU support had. I have no complaints. Also the FAQ's on their site have a ton of useful info for their products too.

I use the 828mkii in a project studio with some vintage analog synths, new digital synths, guitar, and bass. It records all of them beautifully, and easily. Also, the 828 is awesome for VST instruments and effects. The ability to run a virtual instrument out of the computer to effects and back is very nice. I don't play or record to make money, I do it for fun. I have been making music with Windows PC's since 1996. I still can't believe all of the work I have gotten done since purchasing the 828. It was a great revolution for my studio. I also plan on taking it out of the studio with my HP laptop to record at other's studios and live shows. I haven't done this yet, but I don't anticipate any problems. I wanted the original 828 when it came out 5 or 6 years ago, and since then I had been looking at other brands for a similar piece of equipment. There is still nothing like it. It has all the features I needed, and none of the crap I don't. I just wanted line level inputs, so I can use my own preamps, but most of the other firewire boxes come with pre's on all or most of the channels. The 828's two front panel pre's are nice for a quick patch-in, but I mostly use its balanced line inputs. The only problem I have is that when using the S/PDIF or TOSLINK ins the unit's sample rate steps down to the incoming signal. I use a Boss GT-8 for guitar, and I like to use its digi out, but it is only 44.1khz, so I have to upconvert the guitar tracks, or do the whole project at 44.1. This can be resolved with a master clock and sample rate converter, but I can't afford all that right now. It would be nice if it could automatically upconvert and keep in sync, but for the price, it is not a big deal at all. The 828mkii is a very professional piece of equipment at a nice hobby studio price. If you need quality inputs for a low price buy it now. I was expecting it to be a cheap crutch to get me by until I could buy "real" A/D & D/A (like Universal Audio or Apogee) but now I have everything I need, and I can focus on getting more instruments and preamps/compressors etc. I am overly satisfied.

While you might need the owner's manual to use if from the front panel controls, software control from a Mac is absolutely easy. You get a very nice virtual console, and a well laid-out control panel. That's all, and there is no need for more. Level meters on the front panel are a great help to trace signals and set levels.

Converter's (better, codec's) sound quality is excellent. Powerful, detailed, with a sound of its own that you can call "brown" and "airy" at the same time. I might prefer some RME or Yamaha converters, for the added air and clarity, but this one is good and pro-quality even with classic music and acoustic instruments.
Preamps and instrument DIs are more than decent, as in any low/mid grade mixer today, but I don't like their lack of power and slightly 'veiled' sound. However, they are perfectly usable next to better preamps, as additional inputs.

The internal build quality is not very high. Mine came with a screw flying around free. The power supply buzzes, probably for not well tigthened screws. However, it has not failed one year of everyday use.

I record rock, acoustic and classic music insturments and vocals. It works nicely, even if I sometimes wish for even more transparent converters for classic music. Keep in mind we are discussing of small bits, here, not radical differences.
Overall, a very well thought product, at the right price. Perfect for the evolved project studio, and the small pro-studio on the road.

It would be hard to make this unit easier to understand or operate. The operating system, drivers, and CueMix routing/monitoring software (all included) are all excellent. Also, the AudioDesk DAW software included with the unit is excellent. It has many features. Some may find it to be all they ever need for basic audio recording/editing/mixing (no midi). The plugins sound good and the program is easy to use. From what I've read, it's basically the audio part of MOTU's Digital Performer. In addition, four separate mixes for monitoring, eight outputs, great software and layout; all far above all other devices.

Some other reviewers have reported poor sound quality. This not my experience. I've used a variety of sample rates and have recorded using the onboard preamps, through the 1/4" inputs, using inserts, with condensors and dynamics, with and without the onboard phantom power enabled, etc...I can report nothing but great quality and consistent sound.

The unit was replaced by MOTU two months after I bought it. (More about that in the next section) The current unit is working fine. I'll need more time to see if this one will work long-term.

I bought a unit via eBay, slightly used, but never registered...After two months of daily use, it started locking up after a few minutes use. I had to turn the unit off and back on to get it to work again. I already registered the unit and software, so I called MOTU...and yes, the line was busy, but I eventually got through. I spoke to a knowledgeable tech who took me through a few tests and we deduced that the unit needed to be sent back. MOTU has a unique warranty...for less than $80.00 they will repair or replace the 828mkII, offer a free warranty on that work for 90 days, and that goes for the life of the unit. In five years, if it goes down, the same applies. They replaced my unit, sent it back just as I sent it in (2nd day air), all in a one business day turn around. Outstanding support as far as I'm concerned.

The software/hardware/feature combination is hard to beat. I did my research before buying the 828 mkII. It has 10 simultaneous analogue ins (more than any other unit except for the Hercules unit), multiple monitor mixes, and a great user interface...and it's expandable. you can chain more units together for a larger system. I'm recording drums, guitar, bass, keys, vocals, brass, etc...all sound great. I'd replace it in a heartbeat...quite honestly, I see no competition for the 828 mkII for anyone wanting to do computer-based multi-track recording.

This unit is very easy to use. The manual goes over the basic setup without confusing you. The unit is very accurate but the advertising is misleading when you compare the Green LCD (This is what you will get when you purchase the unit) to the blue screen that you see in every picture on the internet. You will get use to the green screen over time. It's easy to get lost in navigating the front LCD Mixer window. You will over come this as you keep playing with the unit...so don't get discouraged.

If you use a Mac you will have no problem at all. My make is a 1.25Ghz G4.

I use a /PC 1.25 GhzAMD80 gig/40gig G4 512 Ram, 80 gig hd / 200 gig Hd/ Tapco Monitors/ Tascam DA60MKII/Vestax Turntables/Tascam CDX 1700's/PV900 Amp/ Peavey 215 (2) speakers/ Rane TTM56 Mixer/ MC909/ Roland PC170/Headphone distributor.

I also have my pc studio connected to the in's of the unit, my Turntable Battle setup and my G4 system all at the same time. You can digitally label the internal mixer on the Firewire Cuemix console (It makes it easier know what being played when setting up).

**I have my PA system and Studio Monitors Connected at the sametime. This way I can hear how it sounds on the PA right after Mixdown.**

This machine has a diverse array of setup options. You can connect your midi to it and have 20 other things connect at the same time. Keep in mind that 20 ins and 22 outs doesn't mean that you get all those on 1/4 inch plugs. They do a play on words to get your attention. You really have to add up the spdif, adat conn, analog in's/outs so you will get a grand total of 20in's and 22 outs but they add up all of the connections together. If you get a chance, take a look at the back of the 828 mkII on the net and you will see what I'm talking about.
I get real good sound quality on this bad boy. It beats my Audigy card in the ground.

The only thing that I didn't like was that my fuse blew within the first 2 days of having the unit. I just popped open the unit and replaced the fuse (I WAS REAL SCARED AT FIRST) with a new one. I had to go onto the Motu website to get the right specs for the fuse. You will not be able to find this fuse at your local radio shack. You may have to special order it over the net.

This unit is very dependable. A BIG bang for your buck.

9/10 . There is no fucking way of locking this card. Believe me I've tried everything.

Only thing I've found so far: If you are using the audio interface with audio and midi and disconnect it, the drivers inform you have to turn it on again to continue. Ok. You do, it continues. Ok. *BUT* the MIDI port does not survive. Looks like the only driver with "poweroff survival" is the audio driver and not the midi driver.

This is not as stupid as you might think: I use a lot Ableton Live for live performances that use audio and midi, and the 4 pin firewire is very very fragile. Sometimes I happen to move it and the soundcard looses connection. I turn it on again, LIVE continues playing perfectly, all the synths, effects, etc etc BUT the MIDI gear attached to the MIDI ports (usually a master keyboard and a synth) no longer work. I need to restart live for it to rescan the MIDI ports.

About features: I *badly* miss a feature the FW410 and FW1814 had: You can't send the computer output to as many outputs as you want using the internal mixer. I needed this to feed 2 mixers in a big club and was unable to do it. I contacted technical support and confirmed it's impossible: It's OK to route the "real" analog inputs to any combination of outputs, but unfortunately this does NOT apply to the computer output. I miss this a lot and hope MOTU people will upgrade soon the card.

beautiful, the is 0% noise when you use it diretly with your monitor speakers. i use an Rode NTK2 Variable Pattern Tube Microphone and it sounds amazing with the tracks i have made.
i have a pair of Mackie HR626 connected to it and i couldnt ask for any thing els.

works like a dream with this set up but was unstable with a previous windows xp on the same system.

for me it is very easy to install and get working on all types of pcs and laptops with windows xp but can be very easy to get wrong even with a lot of experience with windows

i love everything about it except the didy little green screen on the front and the stupid little knob buttons. The best feature for me is all the outputs and the freedom of them.

There are lots of different ways to set up monitoring of inputs and outputs. The manual is pretty good at describing everything.

When it worked, I didn't notice much difference between it and my Layla 20. However, the audio that I recorded in a multitrack recorded showed up as being delayed by about 30 ms. Add to that the intermittent CPU spikes. Top it off with audio dropouts. Add several dashes of high pitched tones. This gives you an audio interface that I just returned.

Terrible. I'm using a PC setup with Windows XP Professional. Now, my buddy who is running a Mac G5 hasn't had any problems with his Motu 828m k II. The lesson here, if you want to use Motu, buy a Mac. Me, I'm gonna stick with a company who has proven to be reliable - Echo Audio.

Clueless. Took forever to contact them on the phone (lines were busy all morning). Offered a couple of suggestions which I had already done and couldn't offer any other suggestions. Which is another reason I returned it.

From a features standpoint, it had everything I needed. After a week of fighting with it, I decided to go back to the company that I started with. I've never had an issue with my Layla 20, and I'm going to give the Layla 3G a whirl so that I can move into the 24 bit recording world.

I always wanted to buy an 828MKII, The first time I bought one I had to return it because I couldn't get both my PC laptop and Desktop computer to recognise it.
When I finnaly did I would have hangs, and errors so I returned it to the store, and bought several other Audio Interface hardware that works fine such as the Delta 1010, Presonus Firepod, yamaha I88X. but I felt like they where lacking something and didn't offer as much as the 828MKII.

So I decided to give the Motu 828MKii another try, this time I made a lot of research by combing the newsgroups and asking everyone who successfuly get theirs to work, informations about their system and components. finnaly I stumble on what was wrong earlier had to do with the chipset on the Firewire card or the built in one that is used on the motherboard.

The Motu Firewire gears 828MKII or the other ones will work best with firewire cards that has the Texas Instrument Chipset or TI, with that information in hands, I went to A Circuit City store and buy two ADS firewire card, for my laptop ( The ADS PYRO 1394DV ) and desktop (ADS PYRO PCI 64) which is one of the brands recommended by Motu, which has the TI chipset and Voila, My system is working perfectly
(don't get any combo cards, that has Firewire ports + USB )

I spent less than 30 minutes, without opening the manual I figured out all the setting and fine tunings, maybe its because of my background with electronic equipment they all have some similarities in the settings.

I only opened the Manual to make sure all the things I was doing was right.

I bought this unit with the firmware 1.03 or 05 I don't believe there's a firmware upgrade for this unit yet, but there's a driver update that makes the mixing extra sweet.

Because I didn't use the Unit for more than a month, I will not give it a 10 or 9 and also the fact that I had to Buy specific product for it to work lower my rating a little more.

I use an AKG C3000B condenser Mic, which is not top line, but works perfectly I get a nice clean recording. But I will get a separate Preamp such as a presonus. The Preamp is comparable to the Tascam Units such as the FW-1884 for those who are familiar with that unit, Good enough but not the cream of the crop.
If you're only interested in getting great PreAmps and nothing else than your first choice is The Presonus Firepod or Firebox, next is the I88x ( but it lacks the mixing capability of the other hardwares) next is the Delta 1010 but it's not firewire capable. I'm not familiar with The Echo Lines of product such as the Layla, Mona or the newest ones, so I won't comment on them.

This is probably the strongest of all the Rackmountable Audio interface outhere besides the I88x. I will feel very secure to use it on a gig without a backup.

I have not yet contacted Motu for any issues and hope that I don't have to.

I Play R&B, Gospel, Pop and Rock. I own a recording studio and work with different type of Artist.
I've been in the field for close to 30 years. I own too many gears to mention.
If the 828 suddenly vanish! I will definitely run to the store and buy another unless Motu comes out with a better one, which might be impossible.
I love the ADAT feature, the monitoring, Mixing, all the different Inputs. I only wish the screen was blue instead of green which was the color advertise on the box.
my favorite features are the Phantom switch in the front, the led displays and the cueMix.
I compare the Motu to all the Other Interfaces which I Owned and chose the Motu not because of the PreAmps which are good but not as good as the Yamaha I88x, or the Presonus Firepod which have definitely the cleanest and best Preamps, but you can always add a preamp of your choice to the Motu 828Mkii, but you can't add the missing features of the 828MKii to those other Interfaces.
But Overall the Motu makes up for that with its unlimited options it has everything that you need in an Audio Interface.
It definitely help me get things done quicker, specially on the road with my Laptop.
I might comeback and give this a perfect 10 after a reasonable amount of usage, if it still working as it suppose to.

For basic use, I didn't really need a manual to use it's prime options. It's quit intuitive.

As most users say, the soundquality is it's strongest part, though the mic input's can't be boosted and sound really soft when using a normal microphone. I haven't tested this with a condensator mic. yet.

HELP!!! I expected to buy a professional soundcard, capable of doing it all, without many problems, but except the good soundquality of the recordings I was ABLE make, it seems worse then my old SB live platinum. I am using it with a brandnew laptop ASUS PIV 3.2 GHZ. Using Cubase and gigastudio, I have had more crashes then ever, I hear audio plops and clicks regurlarly, simply playing an audio cd with windows media player is not possible without peeps and interruptions, when using vst instruments in Cubase, my soundmodules won't work anymore etc. etc.

As i didn't expect from manufacturers of such professional hardware, they just don't respond to my emails, asking for help. It seems I have wasted my 800 euro's!

Untill now, I have spend 5 times as much time on trying to solve problems with this device, as actually making music with it. At this time it's clear that I wouldn't recommend this product to other laptop-musicians.

My first take was compromised by clicks and pops and electronic distorsion.
Motu's forums said either HDD was too slow /old or a digital connection was messing with the sync. Well I had no digital connections so I bought a brand new Hitachi UDMA 133 (My Pc is a AMD 2000+/512 DDRam).
It is exactly the same!!!!

I have sent a Help-me mail to Motu Friday. 4 days later I'm still waiting for at least a notification of reception.

It is still under warranty so ...

I have MOTU 828mk2 v1.01. About the manual and ease of use ... well, it's a sound interface, if you know how to use one, pretty sure you will get around with any ... It comes with a basic, printed manual. Looks funny but don't know - not used to read'em :)

IMHO the sound quality is excellent. I have two different work lines: On my house I have two Tannoy Reveal Active, and the sound is very good. I also do live acts, wiring the Motu to big amplifiers and speakers and everythings' OK.

Thumbs up! Finally a f*cking firewire audio device that is rock stable ... Until I got my MOTU, like 2 weeks ago, I was beginning to think myself I was asking for too much... I only wanted a sound card that can keep stable during a no-more-than-4-or-5-hours set. But all my previous experiences were bad.

During these two weeks I've been testing the MOTU badly, trying hard to lock the device. Not only it never went down, but didn't even suggested it might. The hardest test was using it with a laptop in the countryside, for a LIve Act in a rave. Setup was Toshiba P4 (NOT TUNED FOR AUDIO), evoultion UC33, Ableton Live + 4 realtime inputs, effects, realtime recording, performing MIDI on VSTi's .... on a quite cold night, then sun ... the MOTU thing was quiet, and working.

More in-depth analysis ... I am very happy with the drivers architecture. On previous FW interfaces I had, if there was a power failure (so the FW interface switches off in the middle of, say, a performance) chances were 90% that the system would collapse, you had to reboot, or at least tweak here and there and invest some 5 minutes on having everything ready again. MOTU drivers simply say "The Firewire Device has been turned off. Please turn it on again". And it is true, it is the only thing you have to do.

Well ... I certainly would rather a smaller audio interface... my previous interfaces (MAudio FW410, FW1814) were small and i could put them inside my computer bag. MOTU is rack-sized so is worse for me.

BUT - It certainly pays off to carry the extra-size for many reasons. Besides real stability, MOTU offers excellent quality, rock solid golden connectors, professional combo connectors.... everything just looks more serious.

Things I like: Stability, Quality of materials, overall solid sensation.

Things I don't like:

1) The rotary knobs are very close together, and in my opinion there are too many for not a lot of functions... maybe they can replace that plaethora of knobs with just some cursor keys and a select key...

2) It would be nice to have some control over the MIDI port when the unit is NOT connected to the computer. At least to put it in "MIDI THRU" mode.

3) If you turn the unit on / off with your (active) monitors attached and online you hear the typical peak noise... I suppose this is not easy to fix.

Difficult to use if you have stubby/large fingers. The knobs are very small, and there are too many. To be fair, I almost never have to get into the unit from the front panel though.

Sounds great to me. I've recorded some monster musicians through this, guys who have recorded with Albini, etc. The were floored by the quality I got out of it. I have had no problems with any hiss or buzzing that others report.

the front display went dead, wtty is only 90 days plus 1 year from AMS so I am SOL. On the other hand the unit is still functioning fine.

So far so good. I have gotten some good responses from there tech staff. Wait and sse on the LCD issue

It does almost eveything. I was surpised to find out it works as a stand alone mixer/ad/da. No PC needed. The controls are maddening though. They should've cloned the quadraverb or SPX stlye data wheel, cursor button interface instead of 5 tiny knobs that all tuen and push in. Though 22 in 20 out of 24 bit or 18 in 20 out at 24/96 is hard to beat for the price.

The 828 is easy to use although the signal routing can get complicated with all the possibilities. The stand alone mixer isn't much use since you have only a few knobs for many channels and functions. You have to step through channels and functions on a small screen.

The sound quality and functionality is excellent, the power transformer buzzes which is annoying and not up to pro standards.

Well this is a big WATCH OUT. The original batch of 828s from the Long and McQuade music store in Vancouver had big problems with the screen in the middle of the front panel going totally dead. Sometimes new models were just dead but in my case the screen went dead 1 month after the warrenty expired. THE STORE AND MOTU KNEW THE UNITS WERE DEFECTIVE AND SOLD THEM ANYWAY. I found this out after the fact. Fortunately after dealing with a sales person who said basically it was my problem and they would not help me at all the manager agreed to take some responsibility in the matter.
I would not buy another Motu product and would advise others to beware.

My unit is in for repair now and am told it could take 6 weeks or longer and will cost me $50 plus shipping for a know factory fault to be repaired. Not impressed.

Although the unit works very well I would not buy another motu product.
Putting out a whole batch of factory defective units and not taking responsibility really sucks.

This is the first Firewire audio interface I've ever used in my personal studio so I didn't know what to expect. The driver sets up easily and geting the features that I need to use for recording figured out was pretty easy. The manual is ok but nothing all that special but to be fair it's just fine, this thing's pretty easy to use.

Generally I record most stuff through one of several microphones including a Groove Tubes Model 1B using an ART MPA Pro. The sound quality is very good and the unit seems to be excellent about keeping to itself and not making any sudden clicks or pops. I run everything at +4 levels and it works just fine with that and it also handles TRS balanced cables in and out which is also a plus.

We used the MOTU unit for a weekend's worth of recording without one hitch or hickup. It seems very nicely built and it runs cool. I would say that it's quite reliable and it came with a nice long Firewire cable too.

I e-mailed them because at first I couldn't find my registration card in the box. They told me where to look and they replied the same day, so I would say they were just fine for something non technical anyway.

We play mostly pop and rock music and I do all of the engineering work on our recordings. This box works very good with my PC that I built and use strictly for recording. It has the features I needed and not much extra that I didn't need. I bought it to replace an aging Layla card which was also very good. I'm quite pleased about the only thing I don't like is that you can't adjust the main out volume in the driver from the computer like I could with the Layla. This is nice when monitoring playback while overdubing. I have to make the adjustment from the front panel, not a big deal really.

The mkII feature set is a big improvement over the original mkI. It is easy to set up mixes using the provided software, and the drivers work right out of the box. But the front panel of the mkII is poorly designed. The tiny knobs are a pain to use, and headphone jack is right in the middle of the front panel directly below the tiny master volume control knob (so that the headphone cord hangs down over the front of the rest of your gear and you've got to fumble around the headphone jack every time you want to adjust the volume).

The performance is good EXCEPT ... and this is a BIG EXCEPT ...

The power supply buzzes! The noise is loud enough that you can hear it from a couple of feet away. I thought it was just an isolated problem with the unit i bought but then i started reading lots of other people's complaints online about it. Before you buy an 828 mkII put your ear up against the demo unit in the store and see if you hear a buzzing. Usually music stores are too loud to hear the buzz from any distance. But trust me when you get the unit home you'll notice the buzz in your quiet studio. The problem is esecially bad if you want to use the 828 as a stand alone mixer because then you need to have the 828 within arm's reach of your monitoring position and from this distance the buzz is very noticable.

The MOTU 828 mkII comes with a 90 day warranty !!! I didn't know this until after i bought mine. 90 days is absolutely ridiculous for a piece of kit this expensive. It makes me very worried about the reliability.

MOTU support has been absolutely horrible. When i had pre sales questions and concerns about the product they answered them by email within a day. As soon as I bought my mkII and had problems with it, they stopped answering my emails entirely.

The 828 mkII has a lot of great features and not much competition in this price range, but be aware of it's major problems before you buy ...

This is my second week with this unit now and it's really pretty simple to use. The manual explains every clearly but could of done with a couple more setup examples and sample settings. The knobs on the interface are quite small but easy to manipulate. As for getting started up it really is 'plug in and play'. Just install the drivers, tweak a couple of computer setting and your off. Took 10mins max.

Sound quality is PRISTINE and Professional. The two mic pres on the front are completely transparent (as with all the inputs)and have plenty of gain. The 828mkII sits smugly in my rack in the home studio. I pair it with Cubase SX on the Windows platform (will move to G4-5 when i can afford it!)and have successfully tracked 96Khz audio using all the analogue inputs simultanously, which was one of the reasons for purchasing the unit.

Into week 2 and no reported problems. Looks Reliable (if you can say that?!). Its also supposed to be good as a live recording interface for Laptops so i'll have to try that sometime.

No need so far. I bought the Unit from the US and shipped it to the UK. So hopefully im still eligble for support.?

I'm a musician who produces alot of different styles of music in collabration other musicians/vocalists in London. Mainly incorperating modern flavours, Hip-Hop, jazz, soul/RnB, Drum'n'Bass etc to create original sounds. The MOTU 828mkII has done everything i could of hoped for and no more. Initially, i was torn between the same decision many face when choosing a new pro fw-interface, Digi002R vs Motu 828mkII. In the end, the cross-platform compatability swayed the dicision in the 828's favor (+ a couple hundred bills left in my pocket). If your looking for a new interface and you've got the money, i STRONGLY recommend this unit. If stolen, i guess i'd start saving up to buy a other one, after i finish crying like a baby.

This unit is just amazing! The sound is just bueatiful. With 2 mic inputs you can get recording with nothing but a mic & a Mac. The softewar Audio Desk 2 is excellent. (No midi)

The Plug-ins are fantastic. Ring modulater, stereo delays, pre amp simulater. Just awsome!

I was using an older 828 @ college and it survived several years of students so I believe in it's reliability but @ only a month old I have no opinion.

I've heard terrible things from other users but I believe that MOTU feels this is a plug in and play fire wire devise and if you don't heve your computer together that's your problem. At the same time they will send out replacment devises without any hassle if your 828 is faulty.

I'm into Jazz, sound scape, shoe gazer, blues, acoustic, electronica. Basically anything I can try I go for.

The unit intergrates with reason seamlessly. I can't say enough about this unit. Maybe if I didn't spen the last two years in pro-tools free using the mic in on my mac I wouldn't be so crazy over this unit. At the same time Pat Metheny has one of these and he uses it to produce albums sooooo....
