Dead easy to use. Very handy that it shows when you're clipping the input or output signal - helps get the box set up for the best dynamic range possible. Preventing clipping is the only reason you'd need to read the manual.

When it's on, it's on. I'm using this with a Fender PA135 silverface amp, which sounds quite dark (muffled?) through my old Goodman speakers. This pedal, with just a gentle slope on the top end of maybe 3 db, completely transforms the sound! I haven't had something plug in and make such a difference in quite a while!

All in all this pedal seems great. I checked around for other EQ pedals and decided to pay the little extra for the MXR (well, a lot extra compared to a Fish & Chips). Maybe I could have got away with the MXR 6 band EQ or something cheaper, but I played it safe. Got it new from Ebay which helped with the price. I'm using mine in a very functional manner to "correct" a sound, but I imagine it would do a good job if I asked it to be more of an "effect".

The pedal includes excellent documentation. Few EQ examples are provided, but the best way to get specific tone is to put a looper such as RC-2 in front of it, save a phrase and tweak each frequency until you are satisfied with the result. Another great thing is a 18 VAC power supply is included.

First of all, this is a true bypass. Even when engaged with all EQ settings to 0 Db this pedal is very transparent. Slight adjustments allow for fine sculpturing of your tone. The pedal works equally well before and after distortion and in the amps effect loop. I didn't notice any noise even in high-gain settings. The best use I found is to place it immediately after a distortion unit, set the distortion tone controls to 12 o'clock and play with the EQ until I find the right settings. With the right settings you can turn an aggressive pedals such as ML-2 and MT-2 into truly brutal beasts. Another thing I like about this pedal is the fact it doesn't affect playing dynamics - your palm mutes will sounds equally good or bad regardless if this pedal is engaged.

This is probably the only pedal in my collection I can claim is perfect. Everything about it is well thought - the packaging, the documentation, the included power supply. I appreciate the transparency when it is not in use and the ability to accomplish subtle or dramatic tone changes depending on ones playing style.

I will never ever play an amp without this pedal. It brings your amp to life! I use it in the loop of a Bugera 333XL and it turns this very nice amp into a fire breathing thick heave monster.
You can roll off the highs a bit and bump up the bass and mids for a huge thick tone.

I traded for a Mesa and wanted to smooth out the clean channel and
by mistake found that it works well with the amp in general.I use ch 3 for all my metal sounds as it has the low end and the eq puts a little more gain in the mix at halfway.

10 frequency cut/boost faders, volume and gain faders. This is my first EQ pedal so I had to revert to the manual which had some pretty good setting suggestions. I then adjusted it to get the sound I wanted which only took about an hour. The only reason I gave it a 9 is because I'm new with EQ's.

I play a 1981 Gibson Les Paul Custom and a Gibson Les Paul Studio. My signal path goes like this: Dunlop Crybaby-EHX Holy Grail Reverb-EHX Small Clone Chorus-MXR Carbon Copy Delay-Ibanez AD-7 Anolog Delay-MXR EVH Flanger-Ernie Ball VPJR- ISP Technologies Decimater Pro Stereo(rackunit)-Mesa/Boogie Stiletto Trident(stage1)-Marshall 1960A cab w/Celestion GT-75's. I put this EQ in my effects loop along with the second channel of my Decimater rack unit. I can't even begin to describe how good this pedal is. With this pedal I'm able to sculpt my tone just the way I want and with the volume and gain faders, I'm able to drive the tubes and enhance my amp's natural overdrive. It made my amp a completely different monster. I can't even think of playing without it.

I have two other MXR pedals and both are built like tanks. There is no exeption with this pedal. Anyone who would have a backup unit for giging should have both pedals shuved up thier ass sideways.

I've been playing for 12 years and play my own brand of experimental alt-metal, but this pedal can be easily used for any style of music. I chose this one over the Boss GE-7 because it looked sturdier and better made. If it were stolen I would definetly replace it. If you think your amp is missing something, then this pedal will fill that tonal void.

Fairly Straightforward. You've got 10db + and - gain for 10 different frequency bandwidth faders. There is also a Volume fader AND a gain fader, which gives you some nice options to pump up your overall signal.
I bought mine used, and I did not get the manual with the pedal, but I hear they have some good suggestions on patterns for certain sounds. If you know what you want it's pretty easy, if not, you can literally test every band width until you find the one that contains the pitch you're looking to brighten or subdue. It takes a while this way, but you learn a bit about your instrument and what frequencies define its timbre.

I use this pedal in the parrallel effects loop of a Ruby Riot II (RRII), which is a Framus Class A 30 watt amp. This is noteable because the RRII breaks up pretty early on the clean channel and I can't get the Fender style cleans I sometimes need.
Using it in the effects loop lets me mould the overall tone after my other pedals and the RRII gain stage by adding some clean volume DB without adding dirt or break up. It really makes a beautiful difference, that much between a muddy clean and a brilliant clean. I used to use this pedal in front of a Fender Twin, and I wasn't as happy with the results (too sharp, biting). So I think that is something: use it in the effects loop if you have one.
The individual frequency faders are also very sensitive. This is great if you know what you want, it really lets you target a sound and stand out in a mix without making everyone deaf. This can be frustrating, though, if you aren't careful with your settings or if you pack the pedal in a pedal board where things could get pushed out of place. So be carefull of how sensitive it is, a milimeter up or down will make a difference -- mark your settings.
The D.C. jack for this thing does not like the standard Boss or Pedal Power connectors, it creates a bit more noise than using the wall wart that comes with it, so that's what I do. End of problem.
I'm a little suspicious that this thing sucks a bit of tone and that it is not true bypass, but it more than makes up for it in the precise/flexible gain it delivers. Great for live playing, I would consider other options for recording. That's really my only complaint, and for that this unit gets an 8.

a good, affordable pedal. does what an EQ pedal should do. 10 faders is a notable advantage over 6. the extra volume/gain faders are a useful feature. I turn to this instead of adding an expensive boost or OD pedal to get the tone I want out of an otherwise picked over amp/guitar/pedalboard rig.

I give this pedal only an 8 for ease of use because of the nature of the pedal itself. It has a total of 10 sliders to shape the tone, and 2 to control volume and somehow your tone as well.
It does take some time to dial in the sound you want, and naturally, this gets easier as you become a more experienced musician (not that I would call myself that). As you get the hang of it, you realize why moving the sliders a certain way affect your tone the way they do.

There isn't enough room here to fully describe why this pedal is so good. I find that it does not colour my sound in any negative way, it is quite the opposite.
I run this EQ in the effects loop of my Valveking 212, and I must say that MXR should get a medal for offering a pedal capable of taming the harsh tones the VK is so well known for. The pedal is not noisy, a claim the Boss GE-7 can never make...
I have tried this pedal in pretty much every position in my effects chain and I find that no matter where I place it, it just has a way of getting my guitar to sound very nice. I have an Epiphone les paul classic with Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II in there, and the pick ups really sing with this pedal. It is amazing how little adjustment is needed to get big results.
Currently I run a GE-7 after my Wah and before my Keeley MT-2 and Jekyll & Hyde pedal and a GT-6 (using EQ) after to shape my sound, and I look forward to replacing that GE-7 with a proper M-108, and putting another one after the distortions to really get the perfect sound.
This pedal is a great tool for shaping your tone, and it is capable of turning your sound into much more. I would say placing one of these babies before and after your distortion(s) is the best way to get that sound you are looking for.

This pedal is worth every penny. If lost or stolen I would buy another one. It really is that good. I don't know if it is better than the 6 band EQ, but my guess is that since it gives you more choices that it must be better. It certainly is better than the GE-7 since it doesn't colour the sound in a funny way like that one does, and it is quiet.
Definitely a great tool for shaping your tone. Every guitarist who is looking for better tone should give this pedal a try.

If, like me, you've never used an EQ before, then there is a learning curve.

I don't know why I waited so long to get one of these. It's my first EQ, so I can't really compare it to others. Having 'level' (volume) and 'gain' controls as well the 10 bands of frequencies is VERY useful. What this thing has doen for for me personally, so far, is two-fold. First, I used it to fatten up a bright sounding Deluxe Reverb and to brighten up a dark sounding old Gibson harp amp (so I could play guitar through it). Even more useful though, has been just the basic EQ/tone shaping and slight clean boost function. You can just mess with the sliders until you get your amp's tone dialed in EXACTLY the wway you want. I mean, in this regard it's like maybe the most useful pedal you could ever have because it allows you to not only alter the frequencies precisely, and the level, and the gain, but i think there must some magic in the way it boost/shapes the actual guitar signal because it sure sounds gooood. It's almost like you can take any decent tube amp, put this in front and make it sound like an unreal boutique amp. I mean the proof is in the pudding, how else could you play great guitar through a harp amp? What could be more useful. I ONLY give a 9 because I haven't had it long enough to dole out a 10.

I've been playing electric gitar a loooong time. In my band I shoot for clean "country-ish" tones, even though I do use other effects and we mostly try to play jam band/GD type music and covers. This effect reminds me of the Maxon CP 101 photo-comp someone gave me and will never go off my board. It doesn't really color your sound, just makes it so pure and good. You forget it's on, until you turn it off - then everything suddenly sounds dull, lifeless and two-dimensional....

The pedal has a learning curve IF you don't have working knowledge of frequencies. I am a noob when it comes to EQ but the manual gives sample settings and I started with those and found very usable settings instantly. Start with manual settings and then experiment with the faders to see how they effect your tone,

I use this pedal in the loop of a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifer. Signal chain is LP Custom or PRS Singlecut > EB Volume pedal > Boss Ns-2>Analogman Maxon Tubescreamer> Xotic AC Booster> Mesa Dual Rec. I have the MXR EQ in the fx loop and then into a TC Electronics Vintage Delay.
I do not find this unit noisy at all. It is true bypass. It adds no extra hiss but I also do not boost the highs which helps eliminate noise. I have owned the Dual Rectifier for 6 or 7 years and I have fought it the whole time. I was contemplating buying another amp ( Stiletto, Bogner XTC 101B ,etc ) due to my unhappiness with this amp. I have bought every OD pedal under the sun trying to tighten up the sound. Nothing did the trick. In a last ditch effort a bought the EQ pedal and I cannot believe the difference.
If you own a Dual Rec or any Mesa rectifier series you need to run to your local store and buy this pedal. You have not even begun to enjoy your amplifier without it.

Stop buying boutique overdrive pedals/compressor etc to tighten up your hi gain amplifier. The MXR EQ is a pedal I wish I had discovered many years ago. It has eliminated my need for multiple OD pedals. I will not play without this pedal ever again.
If I was lost or stolen it would be top priority to buy again.
I have been playing for almost 25 years. I have only tried this and the Danelectro Fish n Chips which to me is an absolute toy and a waste of time for serious guitar players.

let just say at this point that i like this pedal enough that if it's not on something is very wrong with me and my sound just could'nt survive without it.i use to have a boss 7 band eq for 5-6 years before it broke down I mainly used it brighten up my old peavy ultra 120 all tube head because the amp sounded a little too warm and dull for my taste.I bought another one and sold it about a year or two later for extra money for some reason. When it came time for me considering an eq pedal i wanted to try something diffrent so i decided to go w/mxr cause i've heard many good things about them with their sound and that they're more powerful than the boss eq's.In fact my amp sounds more powerful with this box likes it in your face for the good ol, sake of heavy metal.
