Two knobs-sensitivity and attack. The first sets the volume a note has to hit to activate the autowah, the second, how long the wah takes to reach full treble. It's sensitive-you have to match threshold and guitar volume, but when you do, it's sweet.

Sound Quality : 9
Excellent, very quacky, you can use it for funky rhythm stuff or to spice up a lead line.

Reliability : No Opinion
Not sure, only had it one day. Built like a tank.

Never used them.

Hey, it's seriously cool. If you find one for less than $100, snap it up!

Getting a good sound requires a bit of tweaking, because the sensitivity has to match up correctly with the output of the guitar. There are only two controls; sensitivity and attack. The sensitivity controls how much the filter opens for a given input level and the attack controls how fast it opens. the manual explains everything clearly although, since this pedal is long out of production, you're not that likely to find one with a manual.

Sound Quality : 9
The sound is very clean and clear. Compared to a Mutron III the MXR has a more subtle sound. It also lacks the flexibility of the Mutron. Filter sweep is up only, and the range is set by the sensitivity. One big advantage over the Mutron is that the MXR has a true bypass.

Reliability : 10
I've had this pedal for 17 years and used on gigs without a backup. No problems whatsoever.

Never needed it.

Overall Rating : 9
Soon after I purchased the MXR I bought a Mutron III for its greater flexibility and more extreme sounds. But I only use the Mutron for recording specific tracks, whereas the MXR is a standard part of my effects chain. I've never played the Boss, Ibanez or DOD envelope filters, so I can't compare to them. With the MXR I can get good reggae and Jerry Garcia-like sounds, so I'm perfectly happy with it.
