I have a Small Stone that is currently out of commission and I wanted another phaser. I did some research and found out about the Phase 90. Went to Guitar Center (I know, blasphemy!) and demanded they give me a phase 90!
Oh this pedal is heavenly!
I have to add though that I did the R28/ C11/ C12 mod because it did start clipping and boost the mids. The Phase 90 can be a little extreme but I like a pedal with a bit of attitude, hence the Big Muff Pi.
I'm currently playing a Strat through a Reeves Custom 50 and a Reeves 2x12 with Vintage Purples. My effects are an Ehx Small Clone and a modified Ehx Big Muff Pi (Classic HairPie). Simple.
This pedal is fantastic! It is thick, swirly and kind of has the Univibe warble (a little...) especially when I engage the Small Clone. It puts a smile on my face. It kind of pisses me off that I had to modify it slightly, but I digress...

I play whatever springs to my head and this pedal just makes me smile. I didn't buy this pedal to emulate any famous users but I can definitely dial in some of their tones. If that's your bag then get this pedal and play away. If you want a creamy phaser with 'character' just grab this pedal. I admit though that it can be a tad too aggressive unlike the Small Stone which is smoother than the Phase 90.
If it's one thing I've learned in the music world it's that there is no good or bad, only a difference in taste.
If I had to choose between a Small Stone or the Phase 90 I would choose the Phase 90. Best phaser I've played so far although I have my eye on the Red Witch Moon Phaser.

Very easy to dial in sound. One knob. The further you go clockwise = more oscilation. I bought it brand new and there was no manual. Box included several advertisements for all MXR effects. No changes made to my pedal.

Setup = 84 American Strat equipped w Noiseless pickups, 91 Charvel w Dimarzio Area 58 and 61 pickups, or 73 Ibanez Les Paul copy equipped with Seymour Duncans. All w gauge 10s. Crate Palomino v32 212. Connect by itself with monster cables and thru my Carl Martin Combinator 2 with George L cables. Also tested with Vox Pathfinder model v9158, Fender FM 100 head, Marshall MG 250 DFX.
Noisy = not noisy but this pedal will distort when you play hard or you use some sort of boost which is good for rock but bad for clean sounds which I need for funk, soul, r&b, 70s music ...
Settings = I found a good Maroon 5 type sounds around 9 o'clock. Some good rock sounds around 11 or 1 o'clock (phase w distortion). This pedal would be good for funk work it would stay level and not drop volume.
Sound = the effect by itself sounded good but once I put it with other effects or thru the Carl Martin, I noticed the level dropped compared to other clean sounds. I have a flange sound, compressed sound, chorus, ... but once I patched the Phase 90 in, my level dropped. I tried to boost it with EQ but it only helped a little.

I did get a response from MXR via email. Tech stated this M-101 Phase 90 works better with single coil guitars than humbuckers. He said he was familar with the problem yet this issue is not posted or advertised by MXR. Tech suggested that I try a script logo Phase model. Basically, I'm stuck with the pedal and I have to buy a more expensive model that MAY RESOLVE MY ISSUE. I believe that MXR should state this pedal works better with single coils.
I appreciate the response but I am disappointment at the resolution.

I play a variety of music. Earth Wind & Fire, Kool and the Gang, Rick James, Temptations, Santana, ZZ Top, Maroon 5, Eagles, KC and the Sunshine Band. It is not a good match because of the level drop and the fact that is distorts easily.
I have been playing for 24 years. I own plenty of pedals. Modify and non-mod. I own pedals from RMC Geoffrey Teese, modded Analogman, Ibanez, Boss, Morley, Carl Martin, Digitech, and Alesis.
I would not replace it.

a 6 before the r-28 mod. an 8 after...here is how it got a 10!:
i plugged it into the amp, while the curcuit board was out of the little metal box. i noticed there is a trim pot. i took a jeweler's screwdriver, and i found the g-spot in this little baby!
now it sounds infectious, raunchy, and it screams in terror! very creamy! it's like, dunlop knows people are going to remove the screws and void the warranty, and they reward you for it, by giving you things to play with inside!!! ;-)

metal box, sturdy!
why did i give this thing an 8 and not a 10? well, it has a very bright led. no, it did not hurt my eyes! lol! however, i did find out, when the battery gets weak, the light DOES NOT go dim! so, no warning, really. and the weak battery also weakens the sound quality and strength of the sweep and overall effect. i found this to be strange. hard to rely on a light that does not go dim when the battery starts to die!

Setup: Gibson '61 SG RI >> EB Vol Jr >> TS808 (or Sparkle Drive) >> Fulldrive 2 >> OCD >> '69 fuzz >> Voodoo Lab Tremolo >> Phase 90 >> AD999 >> Peterson Strobostomp 2 >> '65 Deluxe Reverb RI w/ Eminence Red Fang. I play modern/classic rock, alt country, and pop rock.
Without mod: decent pedal, obviosly has potential, but not quite there (lots of midrange and distorts when driven). With mod: Open, transparent, smooth, punchy, addictive. When I did the mod, I started with the R28 which made the tone more transparent. Next I clipped the C11 which made it sound thicker and smoother. Then I clipped the C12 which made it brighter and punchier, but it was too bright for me, so I resoldered the cap and proceeded to play for hours.
Gets a 9 because it's a great value with the mod, but falls short when compared to a Moogerfooger or PH350 which I would rate a 10 (but at 5x the price!).

I bought a Phase 90 with the intent to do the mod. When I opened it, I found an updated version of the circuit board where most of the resistors and caps were surface mounted and rearranged. This made it impossible to do the mod, so I took it back and opened the back of each one until I found an older board which could be modded (look for more mounting through the board). I don't know if this is Dunlop's way of stopping the mod or saving money, but it seems like the old boards will be extinct soon. Besides this set back, the $/tone ratio for this pedal is incredible with the mod.

This is my second phaser I have owned. My first was the russian EH Small stone which was fine for the price I payed for it. However, I hated that I really couldn't use it because of the drastic volume drop that occured when it was on. So, I went shopping again and got this orange brick of a pedal off ebay. It has one knob that controls the speed of the phase, 'nuff said.
Sound Quality
:
10
It was a great improvment compared to the russian EH. No more volume drop, but when I played clean, there was a hint of overdrive when the phase wave reached the climax. I was looking around the interweb and discovered the R28 mod that made it sound more smoothe and cleaner. I clipped the resistor and it improved the quality of the sound. I highly recommend it if you like to tinker with stuff like I do.
So I say a 10 after the modification
and 6 for the stock pedal

well this pedal is about as easy as it gets. however, doing the r-28 mod required a little bit of effort, and that is the best way to use this pedal, if you ask me. so a point off.

Just the sound I was looking for. Before the mod, it was a little more rough sounding, and the rate was faster earlier in the dail. after, its very smooth and blends a bit more with the overall tone. i have particularly liked the way it has sounded with my maxon chorus, various settings of the boss dd-20, and the boss od-3. very thick syrupy sound, which i wanted to be able to access whenever. it doesn't seem to mix well with either my flanger or my vibrato. oh well.
using this with either an ashdown tube head in louder settings, or an epiphone valve jr at home. when i first set it up on my pedalboard, i had it after my tuner and digitech ex-7, before compression, distortion and the like. but whenever i turned the digitech on with the phaser on, there was much noise. moved the phase 90 to before the ex-7, and the problem was completely fixed. the pedal seems to me to be dead quiet amongs numerous effects. 8 stock sound, 9 after mod.

I use a Gibson sg standard into a marshal jcm2000 tsl60 head into a cab with vintage 30's. my lineup is a boss tuner...boss chorus pedal...boss dd-3...phase 90. the only little problem with it is that it does give you a little volume boost, but the effect always sounds amazing. It does sound a little weak when using it with high gain. I like to play alot of space rock so this pedal is perfect.

One on/off switch and one knob. If you can't figure this thing out, it may be time to put down your guitar and pick up a tambourine. It has everything you need (great phase sound) and nothing you don't(lots of knobs that complicate things but do nothing for your sound.)You like knobs and switches? Have you ever thought about being a programmer instead of a musician? A stomp box is supposed to be something you "stomp" on and exclaim "THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!" What I'm talking about is the easiest bestest phase sound out there. I'm deducting a point only because the AC input is back by the input switch and is too skinny for a Daisy Chain power source. C'mon guys, make it where we can GET to it, huh?
Sound Quality

I tried several other phase and flange pedals that I don't remember the names of (ok, I remember Boss, it didn't do what I wanted). I forgot them after hearing this little gem. You can talk "mods" all you want to. This little beauty puts out the sound I want. I use it with a Amer. Strat into a Peavey Bandit II (quit rolling your eyes till you've played thru one!) and I can honestly say that this was juuust what I was looking for. You want a good phaser w/o breaking the bank AND without compromising your sound? Take this bad boy for a test drive. I did and have NEVER regretted it.

I'm giving it a 9 because of the AC input issue, and also because it doesn't blend with my distortion pedal (Digitech Grunge) quite like I'd like. It does play very nicely with my Boss OD-3. If lost or stolen I might go for one of the EVH models just to see if the "script" mode is all that. What styles of music? I just left a retro dance party band (lots of funk/r&b/disco) and this little orange crush was the bomb. I also work with different worship teams at my church who are into all kinds of contemporary stuff. The Phase 90 handles all of it with ease. I am into single pedals that do one thing and do it well. This fits right in.

The live sound is just shit, sparkling 80, smoked van Halen sound.
A Volumen boost, wich is bad, because its overload your main sound.
Also ther is a slight distortion, wich make it bad for clean sounds.
I would like it when ther is a volumen dail, but No...
In the Studio i run it in a noise gate and a eq. , I have also cut that R 28 resistor ( its just a littel bit cleaner, not important ).
And set the inside dailer a mm forward, that kills a bit of thar highs. So in the studio its OK.
I run it with a Visual Sound 1 Spot and a Ibaneze 3 way liner, that dont will realy get in the power input at the P 90. So sometimes its just get of by doing nothing ! A bad Joke from the MXR guys.
My set up ; Gibson Paula, Fender Start, Esp M II - Holier Grail -

I think this pedal is a great match for me and a wide variety of styles. If I lost it, I would seriously consider buying it again... however I would also consider a Small Stone. I have had previous experience with the Small Stone and the Boss PH2 (I dont know if they make it anymore). I picked this pedal because I wanted something solid, easy to use (with the rubber knob cover you can adjust the speed while playing with your foot), cheap and great sounding, this pedal fits that perfectly!

This thing would be replaced the day it died or went missing. And with a year of use on it and the paint not even pealing... all I can say is that I've found the ultimate. And Against the Boss PH3, the Digitech Hyper Phase, there is nothing better!

What is this? A joke?
I thought I bought a phase 90, but it sounds more like a distortion +.
Terrible distortion, especially with humbuckers. Impossible to get a clean sound out of it.
I wanted to take it back to the store because I thought it was broken. Then I read something about the 'R28 mod' and decided to void my warranty...
Holy shit, Batman!! What a difference!!
Although it is still a little harsh and trebly, most of the distortion is gone now. There's still a little distortion but only if you play your chords real hard. It comes close to the EVH sound now!
It's a bit noisy. It hisses a lot harder than my Small Stone. Also the Small Stone sounds a lot smoother & sweeter. So I cannot give it more than a 6. But without the R28 mod I would have given it a 1.

This is the pedal that all other phasers are compared to. Most people will like the quality of sound because we've heard it dozens of times on recordings. Here are the other phasers I've compared it to: EVH Phase 90, Boss PH-1, and modded Phase 90. For me, the EVH has the best sound because it is not as harsh. The modded phase 90 came in second because it sounds more closely to the EVH. The regular phase 90 3rd, but not because it has a bad sound, just the others were better. The reg. phase 90 does seem to add a more trebly sound. A slower speed would be ideal.

Overall it's about an 8. I don't use phase for a lot of songs - I play in a cover band so this pedal is great at getting a typical phaser sound when I need it. It does, though, sweep the higher frequency range louder than the lower. I've used the pedal for many years - didn't just try it out at a music store and run home to rate it.

This thing sounds amazing. Really, it does. With my ZINKY TRUE GRIT distortion pedal, this thing sounds awsome. Although, if you play it without some kind of boost/distortion/overdrive, it sounds a little flat, but never the less good. Right now, I'm using it with my Marshall MG250DFX and my Fender 1967 Bassman and it sounds awsome with both. On my Fender, you can get some really awsome clean tones with it and get some of that old school EVH tone. The only beef that I have with the pedal is when its not being used and its idling, you can hear it phasing the hum in the background.

I have brought it to a few places with me and its held up very, very well. I would gig without a backup, but I haven't really gigged with it enough to learn the full sense of its reliability.

I play mostly rock and dabble in some blues, mostly I stick to Green Day, Clapton, SRV, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, for just a good example of the range of music I listen to and like to play. This particular pedal does a damn fine job of making my Phase effects sound awsome no matter what sound. I compared it to a Boss Phaser and one other, which I can't remember right now, and the MXR was the easiest and most versatile. For the 70 dollars, this pedal was a great buy. HIGHLY RECOMENDED

The MXR M-101 is by far the simplest pedal to use because it has only one control knob...but don't be fooled by it's simplicity because it can do wonders for your sound.
My pedal included a manual for a Cry Baby wah (that seems to the main paperwork with the Jim Dunlop era MXR products).
At slow settings (with distortion)this pedal creates those early Van Halen textures that really sound great. At faster paced settings the Phase 90 takes you into a kind of "vibro-like" feel.
(Very easy to use).

For those of us who remember the original MXR pedals (made in Rochester, NY in the 1970s) these re-issues are a blast from the past. The new Dunlop made versions capture the looks and heavy metal casing of the original warriors of the past.
Yep, it's all here...the orange paint, the one big control knob (plus a LED pilot light not available on the originals).
Dunlop was wise in deciding to bring back these pedals...believe me, there wasn't a guitarist alive during the days of 1974-82 who didn't own a Phase 90! When "rack systems" got popular in the 80s many players dumped their old MXRs and wished they had held onto them. Original MXRs are considered to be collector's items today (geez, did these "collectors" get sick of baseball cards) and command a hefty price. I simply wanted to get the sound I remembered from those old recordings so a new model was good enough for me.
My current setup feautures a Standard Fender Telecaster, a Marshall MG 100 DFX amp and various (ever changing) effect pedals
("pedals d'jour?").
The new Phase 90 is everything I remember from the old days...I like it.

There are a couple of differences from the originals that I have to note.
First, the kick switch. Dunlop is using a much lighter grade of switch than the originals. I wonder how reliable these switches will be? Time will tell.
Secondly, the input/output jacks. On the first hookup they seemed stiff and too tight. They did seem to loosen up after a few more connections were made. Once again, time will tell...
(Because we're dealing with the unknown my score is: 7.)

I've dealt with Dunlop in the past and they we're great! I had a "Rotovibe" with a broken switch (they replaced the entire unit for me). Their customer service satff seemed very helpfull and nice to deal with.

I play classic rock and have been playing for thirty four years. Through the years I have owned quite a few Phasers (Ibanez, Omnifex, Electro-Harmonix,& Dano) but I was never pleased with their sound or setup. [The Ibanez has too many confusing knobs and modes...The Electro-Harmonix had a great sound but it was made of cheap sheet metal...The Omnifex was great but I traded it off for a multi-effects unit that became quickly "outdated"...the Dano suffered from a huge loss of power when the effect was engaged].
The MXR Phase 90 is simple to use and even easier to get great sounds from. It's a keeper!
The only thing I would change is the kick switch (Dunlop should track down the original suppliers of the old MXR models)...other than that, I love this pedal!

It couldn't be any easier to use this unit. There is only one parameter control (rate), so you don't need to worry about fanagling with parameters to get a good sound. The manual included with mine was for a Crybaby Wah. I've heard of this occuring with other customers, but I figure that there's not alot that needs to be explained about this unit. Any simpleton can look at it and figure it out.

I run a Fender Standard Strat and a Fender showmaster into my Peavey Studio Pro 112, and my effects (including this one) through the effects loop. I don't have any problems with noise by itself or when combined with other effects. The sound quality of this thing is stellar. It's great for any application from a slow sweeping for strumming and appreggios to a really fast warble for solos. It's great fun to experiment with the different sounds you can get.
No complaints.

The construction of this pedal is very rugged. I think the casing is made of steel or aluminum, but I'm not sure. It's not plastic, so with that I am pleased. To replace the battery, you have to unscrew the bottom plate. Some may look at this as an inconvenience, but a) if you use an adapter, you don't have to worry about it and b) you don't have to worry about any broken plastic battery compartment covers. Another thing I noticed is that the input and output jacks are very stiff, meaning you have to really jam the plug in there. Once again, this is a very minor concern. It's rugged construction, not cheap.

As the other guys said there is one knob. Turn it to ~ 10.5 o'clock and you are EVH. I own, or have owned in the past, about every reported piece of equipment EVH has used in the past. I can assure you this is the one thing you are missing. Sure the 5150 sounds great...as do the Ernie Ball and the Wolfgang. However, if you are looking for the VH lead sound the Phase 90 is the Brown Sound. If you are a VH fan you meed this pedal. I cannot say enough.

I am obviously a VH fan. I won't bore non-VH fans with the details. Buy this pedal. It would, without a doubt, be the first pedal (or rack) I would replace. It is simple and to the point. Listen to "I'm the One", "On Fire", "Eruption" etc. You cannot go wrong.

This is probably the easiest pedal to use ever!! It has 2 controls- one knob for the speed of the phase and the other to activate and deactivate the pedal. The speed switch is big enough to be able to adjust with your feet which is handy!

My rig- Jackson DXMG -> Boss TU2 Tuner- Morley Bad Horsie- Boss HM2 Harmonist- Boss XT2 Xtortion- Boss OS2 Overdrive/Distortion- Electro Hamonix Small Clone- MXR Phase 90- Boss DD20 Digital Delay-> Ashdown Fallen Angel 60 head, Line 6 Spider 2 4x12. The Phase 90 only leaks a little bit of constant phase, it doesn't effect the rest of my sounds and doesn't bother me. This can be cut by using Noise Suppression, but seriously, it aint anythin to worry about!
The pedal sounds amazing! It is very Jimmy Page!! The phase just sounds quality. I dislike the Boss phasers a lot, they sound fake compared to this! I really like the Electro Harmonix Small Stone Phaser but they just seem so unreliable and i cant be bothered with that! Of all the phasers I've ever heard this is my favourite by a long way! Sounds great with clean tones, great with distortion and great with all other effects! The only downer is that you cant select how loud the phaser is, but that doesn't bother me because it adds just the right amount to any sound!

Single knob to control phase-sweep rate. Easy to use, easy to figure out. It's a standard Dunlop Phase-90 reissue. Figuring a good balance between shimmer and whoosh takes some tweaking, but it worth the effort.

Used with JCM 900 1x12 and Fender Blues Deluxe 4x10, with Les Paul Studio. The sound is great, nice and understated. The swoosh adds color but doesn't overpower the signal. It seemed to add a little bit of gain, and a tiny bit of signal noise, but not enough to be noticeable in a band-setting.

This is great, mxr keepin it nice and simple as always yet still creating an amazing pedal. If you don't know how to turn a single solitary knob, (rate), round then this pedal is not for you. However I suspect that most of you out there can manage that and can also guess what the footswitch does

I only have a marshall MG50 watt, and play a Fender Telecaster. Sounds great, all the time whatever settings you want. classic swoosh sounds easily obtained, popularised by the likes of Eddie Van Halen, Ed O'Brien (guitarist, Radiohead) also uses one of these if you're interested. Doesn't appear to add any hiss.

this is one tank which will not break when you press the footswitch on, infact it's sturdy metal casing looks like i could probably jump on it a few times without achieving much
I don't gig but if I did, this would be the 2nd thing i took with me everywhere (the 1st being my trusty ol' boss ds-1 distortion)

if this was stolen, i wouldn't get a new one, I'd hunt down that SOAB who took it and make them pay. However if i lost it i suppose i would have to buy a new one, sometimes i just piss about playing nothing in particular just to hear it's sound.
Instantly recognisable sound, yet subtle if you want it to be.
Only had it a year, but I'm sure I'll have at least another ten in perfect condition. Adds to anything you can already play.
Maybe a depth knob or something would have been nice but i spose that's what the MXR Phase 100 is for.
