Simply plug in your guitar, turn the pedal on via the footswitch and you're in business. Adjusting the volume knob gives you more volume boost to about 3 O'clock. Past that setting, the micro amp still gets louder, but it also distorts.

The guy at the store accidentally put a wah pedal manual in my box, but I can't imagine what the instructions would be for this thing.

Sound Quality : 9
I had a Fulldrive2 that I liked for the comp/cut feature and I also liked the boost. Nothing else on that pedal did much for me, however, so I sold it and got the Tonebone Classic. To the Fulldrive2's credit, I still think the comp/cut setting is great, but the boost really added more gain. The Tonebone sounds great, but if you're looking for a small amount of distortion, your volume really suffers. Being familiar with Fulltone, I shoped the Fat Boost pedals for 2002 and 2003. While I really liked the newer 2003 model that had a larger gain control knob, I really didn't find it $100.00 better than the Micro Amp. In fact, I didn't even know about it. I've had Dunlop and MXR stuff before, but was unaware of this great pedal. Not only does it do what the Fatboost does, but it does so much cheaper. Where the Fatboost gets this one is you can select the amount of gain (though very subtle) on the Fatboost where the Micro amp automatically contributes gritty distortion after the 3/4 position. But, for what I needed it for, which is adding a slight amount of volume to my Tonebone, or to any other effect I want to accentuate while soloing or anything else I'm needing a volume bump for. I find the micro amp to be clear and does not suck any tone away from my sound when it's tured off.

Some reviewers have commented on the micro amp compressing slightly, but I really don't notice this happening. If it does, it's very sublte or it does so at higher volume levels. Also, up to the 3 o'clock position, the boost is clean and is great for helping to reinstate your tone after many pedals suck it all away or to provide a little punch when needed. It's also cool for driving the front of my amp hard without anything else. And using it past 3 o'clock gives you the natural tube amp breaking up sound the fulldrive2 gives you. Except it doesn't cost as much!

Reliability : 10
I haven't had an MXR or Dunlop made product that has ever been faulty, bad or poor quality. Sure, it's not boutique, but that doesn't mean it isn't built very tough. Input and output jacks are sturdy and all other components on the pedal seem to made the same way.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with them, which is always a good thing, so I won't comment.

Overall Rating : 10
I like blues, country, rock and roll and sometimes jazz. I think this pedal is a great match for what I was wanting to use it for. I don't use a whole bunch of pedals, so putting it at the end of my chain isn't necessary. I put it in front of everything but my Boss tuner. This way I can keep my compression and overdrive levels consistent with my amplifier volume. This way I can play rhythm with either effect on. Now, with the Micro amp, I can punch that on and set the boost level I want for solos or for higher volumed strumming. And, if I want, I can keep everything off and crank the micro amp for vintage distortion. (I hate that word "vintage" it makes me think of hippies on motorcycles)

I A/Bed the Fatboost from Fulltone and the Micro Amp, and for the price, I have to tell you, the micro amp beats it hands down. The FatBoost is nice, but in my opinion, I do not believe it is $100.00 nicer than the micro amp. In fact, I went to the store expecting to spend $169.00 for the FatBoost. So, one could argue, that even if the pricers were the same, the micro amp would be hard to beat. The Fulltone gives you tone and gain, but if you've used the Fatboost, you'll notice those effects are very subtle. The micro amp offers simplicity and a very transparent volume boost for those needing just that. For what they cost, everybody should have one.

To all the Fulltone faithful, I'm not knocking your beloved pedals. I have owned Fulltone stuff and it's very nice. However, in the case of somebody needing a volume boost, I can't see any huge reason to buy the Fatboost over the Micro amp. Especially when you're considering $79.00 for the MXR to the $169.00 for the Fulltone. I'm sure other opinions will differ from mine and that is fine, but my opinion is my own, I'm sticking to it and I think if you have the chance to A/B the two, you just might have the same opinion as me.

A single knob that raises the dB level. How's that for easy?

A nice full range boost. Doesn't lose your low end like a tube screamer.

So far so good. I can't imagine this thing will turn out to be fragile.

Bought it used, so there's no warranty.

I use old desgn amps (a Vox AC30 and a Marshall 18 watt clone), amp currently shopping for something like a Rangeaster or a Vox Treble Booster, but for $40 this is just a dandy little device. I'll certainly use this with my 12 string electric!

Well it has just one knob for volume and an on/off stomp switch, so if you cant figure this one out you are a retard!

Sound Quality : 8
Provides a sufficient volume boost, and some distortion in need be. This is a fine pedal and its about time someone exposed this whole boutique myth (or fraud as I prefer to call it). This Micro Amp is as good as ANY boutique booster on the market, and is certainly much more reliable than some homemade handmade piece of soldered wired junk.

They make em better in China than ever before, much better than some boutique slapped together by some little kid in someone's parent's dirty filthy basement.

One knob for volume. Plug in and play! Runs on 9 volt battery or special adaptor.

Sound Quality : 9
Sounds decent- not as good as my Banzai Cold Fusion, but then, hey, I dont always want my best pedals laying around where my friends can trip over them and then sue me- the MXR is inexpensive enough and built solid enough to withstand abuse. Nice boost, seems to kick the low and high-end up just a tad- perfect for my Gibson Les Paul Standard (accept no substitute- my guitar is king). I use the pedal's volume boost to overdrive the preamp tube in my amp to help me get that overdrive/distortion sound I crave. My pedal didnt come with the rubber-ring that fits around the knob- luckily I had an old one that I saved from an old MXR Distortion + that fell apart. The rubber ring fits snugly over the pedal's knob making it alot easier to turn the knob with your hand or foot, and it looks cool too!

Reliability : 8
I like the weight on this pedal- its very heavy- nice quality at a reasonable price. decent switch and I believe its a form of true bypass as I see 6 connections to the switch, even though the pedal does have an led.

Customer Support : 6

Overall Rating : 9
Great pedal at a very good price. Only boosts your volume, but theres some additional distortion available at the very end of the knob's sweep range. So up to say 3:00 is a clean boost, and at around 4:00 a pretty wild distortion kicks in. Some reviewer below said that the pedal distotion sounded like studio console solid-state distortion- that sounds plausible to me- its a clean distortion that works well with rhythm guitar chords. Im using this MicroAmp pedal with my new 5 watt Class A amp. The pedal seems to work best with low-wattage amps, as when I tried to use this pedal with my 50-watter it was just way too loud for practice. Other pedals I own include the Fulltone Soulbender and the MJM Britbender (2-knob version), and a few overdrives like the Maxon OD-808 and Blues Pearl Blue Screamer.

All right, one thing to say, if you're planning to use this little boy in a chain plugged into the effect loop PUT IT AT THE END OF THE CHAIN!!! Otherwise, my girlfriend would be able to understand this pedal...

I was searching for a good boost pedaL FOR SOLOS (on the clean and dist. channel as well) and I had bad experiences before I found out about the micro-dude. I've first with a DOD FX-40B eq...big mistake. It cost me 100$ and broke after a couple of gigs. I don't think a eq. is the solution 'cause it is made for changing the frequencies of the guitar signal at the first place (the dod had one eq for the volume and a billion others to equalize). After a bought a bass distorsion (FX92 DOD... again) and stomp on it for my solos while I was turning the gain up and the other stupid named knobs down (you know about the guys at DOD who find names like "zip", "more", "juice" or "stupid" to their pedals), it broke after like 2 or 3 gigs...It's not that i'm lazy and don't go repare my stuff I did it but I wanted a real boost pedal. I was thinking about the Ibanez tube screamer (expensive and I don't needed any overdrive) and a volume pedal by Ernie ball (but I wanted a stomp pedal). Than I heard about the MICRO CHUMMY and I wonder why I lost all this time. If you wan't a creat solos with punch, attack and sustain this MICRO Baby is for you

One knob makes this too easy to use. Just crank the knob for volume.

Sound Quality : 9
Sounds good- its an old school tone. When you turn its volume knob all the way up it kicks in its own distortion, so it can be used both as a clean boost and as a mild dirt box.

Mine seems solid enough- dont kick it around and it wont break, OK?

Easy to use and to get a good sound out of. No manual needed. One knob and switch with an LED indicator. There is also a power jack on the side.

Sound Quality : 10
I'm using this as a boost for my tortured signal path. I run through a Bad Horsie Wah (modded for unity gain) six Boss Stompers and another MXR. This adds enough gain that I suffer no signal loss from this long chain of effects. It really adds life to distortion effects and keeps the signal from degrading. I put it first in the signal chain (others have used it last) and it works wonders. It is on all the time at about 12 O'clock. If you crank it it will add noticable distortion, but at this setting it simply "beefs up" the signal. I use a Godin LGXT guitar and a Carvin SX100 Amp.

Reliability : 7
Reliabilty has declined on these since Dunlop took over for MXR. Jacks and switches are now mounted to the board and the battery jack is mounted to the board by a cheap plastic connector. I power mine with a Godlyke power supply (recommended) so I remove the battery clip altogether. The old style ones are much better, but the new ones do sound the same. The new MXR's do have Boss style barrel connectors for power supply now. Good! I have a spare, but have rarely ever had to use it.

Customer Support : 5
MXR was good, but Dunlop seems lacking in this respect. Not as bad as Boss, but not as good as Morley or Carvin.

Overall Rating : 9
I play Classic and Modern Rock and this pedal really helps. I'm able to use a variety of FX without suffering the drawbacks inherent in the "tortured signal chain" they produce. Buy one, paint it Black and then tell everyone it's a secret weapon designed just for you.

If you can't operate this pedal, you probably don't have any business touching an amplifier. In/Out jacks and one knob. Getting water out of the faucet is more difficult that using this pedal. No manual needed, really.

Sound Quality : 9
I use this little guy to beef up my single coil tones. I mainly play humbucker guitars, and I use the Micro Amp for a little more "umph" when using single coil tones. It works great. The single coil tone is still there, but just as "in your face" as when using a humbucker. I also use it for boosting my clean channel.

Reliability : 9
Seems solid - I'm not going to buy another for a backup because I could still do a show if it fried, no problem.

Customer Support : 9
Have only owned one MXR pedal before, a Phase 90, and I, regrettably, traded it off. Never had to deal with them, so I take the "innocent until proven guilty" approach and give them a "9".

Overall Rating : 9
I give this little guy a "9" over-all. It does what it does very good, but I think for what it does it's a little pricey. If it was $50 or $60 new, I would give it a "10". A great little signal booster with low noise and it will take up little space on your pedal board. Use as a solo booster, to warm up your clean sound, or as a pre-amp volume to a non-master volume amp. I like simple, too. If you can plug in a guitar cable to a jack, you can use this pedal.
As with other posters, I suggest putting it in the end of your signal chain if you are using other effects.

Sound Quality : 10
I use it for a lead boost... and it works amazing... no one ever has trouble hearing my leads like they did before and that is only running it in the 12 O'clock position. It does something to the signal...almost a slightly compressed sound but whatever it is.. it sounds great. One thing... i had it in my chain first going into a metal zone pedal and it didn't work as well.. I put it in the chain last and it was much more effective

An on / off switch and one knob...if life was this easy. But wait, to screw it up MXR has again used the male pin adapter if you're running it from your pedalboard or adapter v. battery. Like you can find one of these at the hardware store. I guess you can pick-up a special MXR adapter for about the price of the pedal itself. Thanks alot MXR, sure, why use a female plug like everyone else in the world.

Sound Quality : 10
Well it's simply great and you want this pedal. I'd say it's like a loudness button on your stereo or boombox, except it's a little more. It will add a nice saturation to your gain. Particularly nice on a Fender clean side. If your amp doesn't saturate easily this will get it there for you. Back off, and it's a clean gain. I haven't used it on solid state.

Reliability : 10
Other than dead batteries I suspect it will outlast me.

I use this with a modern AB tube amp, SG to the dirty side, Strat to the clean side, up in front of my Dyna Comp and in front of various pedals. Trying it in the loop is a good idea too. It's an essential pedal and cheap. Has a very predictable and useable gain pick-up and improves the sound of every pdeal in the chain.

Ease of Use : 10
It?s the most crude simple box you can find in commercial existence, just one knob (gain) a led and a foot switch, that?s all. Plug in and you?re ready.

Sound Quality : 10
It is an extraordinary pedal. I bought at first to recreate the kind of sound created somehow by some ancient treble boosters, such as the Dallas Rangemaster, Screaming Bird and many others. At this point I used it first to overload the tube section of my amp (Marshall Valvestate 100R) by turning the unit?s gain knob at 10 and it gave a kind of bluesy crystal vintage sound to my guitar (Squire Silver Series) the overdriven sound decreases beautifully and naturally to a clean sound by turning the guitar?s volume down, pretty nice. The only problem with this setting is that you are forced to use your other effects through the FX loop, otherwise you get a messy overloaded sound.

After a while I started using it to push my guitar signal into my pedal chain (Boss OS-2, Boss GE-7, Boss CE-5, Boss HR-2, Boss DD-3 and Boss RV-3) by simply setting the gain knob at 45 or 50%. It adds a lot of presence and gain through the effects, i.e. it gives you a nice hard distortion with the OS-2 drive knob at about 45% with a nice large sustain that can easily get delicately mixed, if you like, with feedback to give the impression of an endless sustain effect and this can be achieved at low levels, so it is not an annoying thing to do. It also enhances the sound of the CE-5 and the repeats of the DD-2 are clearer than ever. It adds a little almost unnoticeable noise, but not greater that the one a distortion or overdrive unit could produce. In the end it gives you pristine crystal clear highs and thunderbolt bass that in my case, can be shaped through the GE-7. I also use a passive volume pedal (Boss FV50H) that I place in the chain after the Micro amp because I consider this little box practically as part of my guitar.

Reliability : 10
It is a 100% reliable. It is a heavy duty metal box that can take any punishment or reasonable pressure for a stomp box. A little hard to change the battery because you have to remove the four screws in the back, nevertheless this unit most consume about 5mA so you can forget about the battery for months. Never tried it with and AC adapter which I presume could add a little noise.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I think there are no customer support where I live (Mexico City), nevertheless I could be wrong. On the other hand, the circuit is so simple that I?m sure that anyone with basic knowledge on electronics can deal with this box and besides, Jim Dunlop sales all spare parts for the unit, including the printed circuit board, etc. So if a problem arrives it could be easily fixed.

Overall Rating : 10
The highest qualification for this one. I can live without underwear but not without this pedal, a jewel that I will never sell and will treasure as long as electric guitar and rock music are popular. I?m into Pink Floyd and specially Queen, guitar sounds with a lot of presence and sustain and god, this unit can give you that. Of course the sound is close and by no means accurate but, ? have you tried to crank up just a single Vox AC-30 with a treble booster to emulate Brian May?s sound without death threats on behalf of your neighbours?

One gain control nob and a footswitch. All pedal should be this simple. What sux is that he battery compartment is very user not friendly. U have to unscrew 4 screws on the bottom of the pedal to replace batteries and the circuit board is completely exposed. I bought an AC adapter but MXR can do better than this.

Sound Quality : 10
Someone said this boosts the midrange. I used to own an Ibanez PH-7 and that pedal boosts the midrange. This pedal doesn't or I'm not hearing it. Another great thing about this pedal (along the same lines) is that it doesn't affect the tone of your sound nor does it add noise. It just makes the signal strong via gain. This pedal is actually really cool. I have a 5150 and it sounds exceptionally bassy when the main volume is at its lowest. Put a compressor in the effects loop and u get this nice bassy/fat sound. But this sound is permanently stuck at a very low volume. In comes the MicroAmp. I use the MicroAmp to increase the volume of this particular setting. Truth is I should get a Marshall JCM but I'm short the additional $500. I can't comment much on how this handles clean channels cuz the 5150 doesn't have a clean channel.

Reliability : 10
It is very solid and I would say it is the best design for a pedal after Boss (except for the battery compartment). I am clueless as to the electrical integrity of this pedal.

Don't know.

Overall Rating : 10
I play metal and this along w/ my CS-2 are indespensable. My dream sound would be that of the Smashing Pumpkins in "Siamese Dream" where they overdubbed guitars. This gain pedal along w/ the CS-2 gets me very close to that type of sound (without overdubbing). I believe all that is left for me to do is replace my 5150 with a JCM. This pedal is kinda like a chorus but it strengthens your sound instead of fattening your sound. I own a Japanese made CE-2 (the third cool but not indespensable pedal). Someone said that they use this pedal to push their tubes harder and that is a really good way of describing this pedal.

One of the best clean boosts. Does not color your signal unlike the other boost pedals I know.

I use this thru my amps' FX loops, and the Micro Amp surely makes my leads heard.

I also try to use this to push the preamp tubes harder when I use this in front of my amp (as opposed to in the FX loop) which adds more output to my signal, but not really to make a Strat sound like a LP. Its main duty is to maintain the clarity of the signal... only louder. Think like adding 11-13 in your guitar's volume control.

Easy to use. One in, one out, one knob for gain, one footswitch to kick it on and off, a power jack or unscrew bottom and chuck a battery in.

Sound Quality : 7
sound quality is what this thing is about. Clean gain. Drive a tube amp to shreds, or drive a long chain of effects. Whatever you do, this thing adds snap and pushes the signal a little harder. Sounds great into my marshalls, laneys, or driving my pedal board. WIth it on, the sustain increases, high end returns to a signal driven thru long cables, and the amps breath boosted fire. THru the effects, just a little dollop o gain and the effects all perform better.
However, use to much gain into the fx and you can generate the bad kind of overdrive, or is ther even such a thing, nah.
I give a 7 which is very good in my book. Nothing earns a 10 unless it is 2 plexis daisy chained together being pushed by a fuzz and an upside down strat. GET IT!

Reliability : 10
yep, dependable.
Yep, no need for a backup.

overall it is great at what it is supposed to do. It drives the crap out of an amp, or it drives a long effects chain while preventing high end signal loss. OF course it depends on your amps, guitars, etc...
I use a marshall 4103 and a Laney AOR 50. All good tube amps with great driving characteristics of their own. The micro gives em a little more clean drive causing the amp to drive , compress, and sing more. Its loverly. WOuld i blast it into a solid state, no.
If you are driving a long effects chain, it makes the effects after it sound clearer, no high end signal loss, which in turn allows more tone shaping with yer amp.
ALso good in fx loop to boost for solo or at end of fx chain for same purpose. A good peice of inexpensie gear that does as it should, it is micro sized and amplifies yer signal.

This pedal is very basic and anyone can use. I had no problems.

Sound Quality : 10
I have an Epiphone G-400 (SG style) and a Fender Princeton 65 amp. The MXR sounded just fine when the amp wasn't distorted until the gain was put all the way up to 10, which is pretty load compared to the amp volume. I primarily purchased the pedal for playing at a gig where I need a boost for a solo. I found when using it with my Dano Fab Tone it didn't boost the signal much but I found it worked a lot better when the Micro Amp came after the Fab Tone. This effect sounds great with all of my other effects including my wah, echo, flanger, chorus, phaser(MXR), as well as the MXR distortion plus. When engaging the pedal I can total overpower the rest of the band if I want.

Reliability : 10
This pedal I can depend on as well as the MXR name. I own two other MXR pedals and I plan to buy another one. These pedals are small and compact as well as heavy and durable.

I've been playing about 4 and a half years and about 2 and a half with the band. I own, an Epi SG, a Fender Princeton 65, a pedal board that contains: a Crybaby 95Q, Danoelectro Fab Tone, Danelectro Cool Cat, Dan-Echo, MXR distortion+, MXR phaser, MXR micro amp, and a
BOSS flanger(soon to be replaced by the MXR flanger). If the micro amp were stolen I would buy a new one for sure. I liked the price definitely since the salesman tried to sell me a boost for double the price that I had paid.

I play basic guitar/indie pop kind of music. When we recorded recently we had an SG that was in the studio and my silver face deluxe reverb. We turned the DR to 10, and it sounded nice and overdriven, but when we also plugged in the micro amp and turned it up to 10 as well - it rocked!

ignore the fact that there are actually no numbers on it:

Think of it as being able to go one louder...<G>

Theres on knob for the gain and an on-off footswitch. Pretty damn simple. I bought mine new and it didnt come with any manual but you dont need one really.

Sound Quality : 10
I use a Marshall Valvestate half stack (which I hate)and a Fender squire. The pedal is extremely quiet. The purpose of it is to give you a midrange boost and yes it does do that and it sounds great. With the gain dial all the way up you get this beautiful gritty sound (think of Bonedriven by Bush)on the clean channel. But beware this thing gets extremely loud! You need the volume way down if you want to keep that gritty sound. I love Nirvana and Bush so its good for some of the Bush things but Nirvana used chorus on most of their clean riffs. I have a Boss DS-1 I use too and with the gain dial on the MXR at about 12o'clock the two of them sound beautiful together.

Reliability : 10
Hell yeah you can depend on it! Its made of cast iron or something. Even the knob is a really heavy plastic. I wouldnt know but you might want to keep some extra 9volts around. Id take it on tour without a backup or even enough money to buy another one.

I havent dealt with them but you need to talk to Dunlop if anything goes wrong. They make the reissues and Im not even sure if they still make the reissue Micro Amp. Its almost impossible to find a store that sells them.

Overall Rating : 10
I play grunge or punk or rock or whatever the hell you want to call it. This pedal of course wouldnt be used for Smells Like Teen Spirit, but every music style has its softer songs. I would definitely buy another if sone dickhead swiped it or broke it. I think it sounds awsome. I didnt even try it out. I went to Dunlop's homepage and listened to the sound sample of it and I almost creamed my pants, so did a friend of mine when he heard it. So yeah its definitely worth the 80 bucks if you want something in between a normal clean channel and distortion.

It only has one knob for setting Gain and a footswitch.I didn't get a manual with mine but you don't need it anyways.

I'm using a Gibson LesPaul Standard through a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410.It's clean until you reach the last 25 % on the Gain knob.At first I was a little disapointed with this pedal and I was thinking of returning it to the store I bought it from because it was thinning out my tone when I would kick it in.But this was because I placed the Micro-Amp first in the signal chain before going through my Tube Screamer,Tech 21 XXL,Big Muff then off to the amp.I believe this might be where most people recommend placing it but I found it too bright and I was looking for something more transparent, just a simple volume boost for lead solos. But when I tried placing the Micro-Amp last in the signal path before the amp I got much better results,no apparent change in tone, although I didn't seem to get any noticeable boost when I'd kick in my overdrive chanel on my Hot Rod DeVille amp I solved this problem completely by placing the Micro-Amp in the FX loop of my amp. What a difference it made, now I get the same amount of boost out of all three chanels of my amp and the tone isn't affected in the process.I didn't want to use the FX loop on my amp at first because it engages the solid state buffers in the amp therefore the signal path in the amp isn't tube exclusively, but that's kind of a dumb concern because I'm using all of these solid state pedals anyways.I'm very sattisfied with this pedal.

MXR pedals are just about the toughest pedals out there. It's very heavy for its size and it just seems to scream out Quality! I would count on it 100%.

I just bought this pedal so I've had no reason to deal with them,I can't foresee any problems with this pedal in the futur.

Overall Rating : 10
I play Rock and try to play some Blues and this pedal is very handy in any situation.I've been playing for over 20 years and I would highly recommend this pedal to anyone.I realize the Klon Centaur or other "Boutique"pedals would probably out perform this but I think this gets the job done at a reasonable price. I'd replace it if stolen or lost. You have to unscrew the backplate to get at the battery.I could have bought the DOD FX10 FET/Bi-Amp instead of the MXR at half the price but the MXR seems to be higher quality.

It has one knob, gain, and a switch.

Sound Quality : 8
When engaged, the pedal just boosts you signal. It adds a slight high end boost and a tiny bit of noise. Both of these things can be a little unnerving when in isolation, but the presence boost is actually a plus on stage and the noise is almost unnoticable.

Reliability : 9
No problems yet. I have used with only another distortion pedal as backup.

Never had any problem

I wouldn't be without it. I think that it is a great way to do the TS-9 thing (I have one) without losing the basic tone of the amp and guitar. It is surprising how much overdrive you can get with this pedal and an only slightly overdriven amp. I used it once with a Groove Tubes STPG-1 where the Micro Amp was overdriving an Experience Pedal which was driving the GT. Pretty sick distortion, and it would feed back in a second.

What does that thing do?!?!?! Well, the micro amp does nothing but boost the signal. It does eliminate line loading, and I feel it adds a bit of presence. It does have a good amount of boost power, actually a bit too much for some amps when cranked.

Reliability : 10
Very heavy duty.

I've broken my share of Crybabys and other Dunlop stuff, but never an MXR pedal, even these reissues.

Overall Rating : 7
Yeah, it's boring, but sometimes you need a boost without distortion. You can spend a lot more and get completely transparent clean boost (on something like the Centaur by Klon) but this is hard to beat for around $50.
