I doubt anybody who has heard of this pedal is new to guitar and effects. Therefore it is very easy, just like all your fave pedals. In, Out and a few knobs and switches to play with. Simple

I use Gibson Les Pauls and the rest of my rig is boutique (Engl, Keeley, Whirlwind, Suhr pickups etc.) so this fits in quite nicely with the rig. The sound is 100% tonal beauty and the pedal is completely transparent when off and gives those well needed hard rock bluesy balls you need to take your sound to the next level so you will stand out in any crowd (unless you are lucky enough to be in the same room as Doug himself). This pedal alone will not get that true Doug tone. no amount of Doug gear will do that, you need to learn to hold the guitar right too (no, i haven't) but it is easily one of the best distortion/boost pedals out there.

Mine had a small problem. A reverse polarity fuse blew and i had to send it back for repairs. the repairs were quick and it was back with me in a few weeks (I live in the UK so i had to wait for posting) I must point out the fault was NOT with the pedal but the power being supplied to it. If that fuse was not put in the pedal it would have been a lot worse. Its nice that David puts failsafes like that into these pedals as it really does give you some more peice of mind that the expensive parts are safe.

David replies to all emails within a day and is friendly and helpful. When i got it repaired the repair was done within a day and then only USPS and RM were responsible for the time it took to get to me. You cannot hope to meet a nicer chap so rest at ease when buying from him, i cannot recommend these pedals enough.

If it was stolen i would buy a new one so quickly that my head would spin. granted it takes a while to be built and reach someone in the UK but i cannot live without this pedal now. I know this thing is nearly $300 but this tone is worth any amount of money. i tend to play classic hard rock like Whitesnake, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple/Rainbow. Sometimes i go more towards a Randy Rhoads or Iron Maiden sound but mostly i stick to the old stuff.

As simple as it gets, 2 buttons, each with easy controls and a 3 way bass shifter to set the bass to your specific rig.

Best overdrive & distortion pedal I've ever heard. Doesn't change your tone, doesn't lose the bass and doesn't sound like a pedal at all. When A/B'd with other modded pedals I used to love it blows them away no contest.

This has to be the best overdrive boost pedal I have ever used!! I have been using this pedal for about 5-6 months now and everytime I use it Im overwhelmed with the sheer quality of tone this pedal gives. Current set up: Gibson Les Pauls - Engl powerball - RMC Wizard Wah - Rocket Fuel - Visual sound Liquid Chorus - boss OC2 - SDE3000 Rack Delay.
I can't recommend this pedal enough!!! Thanks Dave and thanks Doug

I use a Gibson Les Paul Custom > rocket fuel > jcm 800 reissue. Sound??s amazing. This is the kind of killertone i??m looking for many years. I play several amp and effekt combinations but this is crazy. Full tone, much overdrive, but the tone is always straightforward!

The RF-1 arrived yesterday so I had a chance to play with it for about 2 hours last night. Here are my thoughts:
I guess the best way to describe a pedal is to compare it with other known pedals. To that end here's a list of my existing pedals preceded with my 1 - 10 rating (10 being the best):
6: Keeley Boss SD-1
7: Keeley TS-9
5: Maxon OD808
7: Maxon OD9 pro+
4: Boss SD-1
4: Boss DS-1
8: Xotic BB preamp
3: Vox Satchurator
With enough tweaking all of these pedals can be made to sound half way decent.
My rating for the RF-1 - Off the bleeding scale! Yep, this thing is beyond a 10...by alot!
I was looking for a pedal that would kick my XTC in the butt but not step on the tone...this is the box that gets that done...in spades! It's very seldom that I feel a product lives up to the manufacturer's claims...this one does.
Will this box make your rig sound like Aldrich's rig? Probably not because you probably don't have his modded Marshalls, exact guitars and pups, cabs and of course tone that he's able to add by way of his playing style...damn he's good. Having said that, if you've got a decent "hot rod" Marshall type of amp like an XTC, this pedal will sound amazing. In addition, the pedal is very versatile...lots of different tones can be had from this box. The boost is very transparent and the OD is killer. Both keep the original tone of the amp in tact. It may seem a little pricey at $269.00, however, keep in mind it's like having three pedals in one. You have the boost switch, OD switch and you can combine them both for a third. When you think about it that's a pretty good deal.
I've always been a little disappointed in all of the other pedals I've purchased. They all sort of do what they claim to do, however, they also always detract from the tone is some way...this box does NOT detract from the tone in any way.
Now for my criticism:
This is purely cosmetic and most will see this as nit-picking...I suppose it is. The box lacks easy access to the battery compartment...you have to remove 4 screws to change the battery. The box is unpainted/unfinished looking. The labeling is a bit difficult to see...poor color choice. I don't know, for something that sounds so damn good I was expecting a more polished looking product. Again, this is just trivial nit-picking 'cause the functionality far out weighs the, IMHO, cosmetic short comings.
Dave Simson, HAT'S OFF TO YOU FOR DELIVERING A GREAT PRODUCT. The RF-1 has replaced ALL off my other pedals of this type!
Reliability
:
No Opinion
It looks pretty rugged, although, the battery could have been secured a little better...maybe.

I emailed the owner of Majik Box with a few questions prior to purchasing the pedal. Very nice guy, very helpful. He promised to have the pedal to me within a certain time frame and he more than kept his promise...very cool.

Here's the signal chain:
2007 LP Std -> RF-1 > XTC 101b -> 4X12 Legacy loaded with Greenbacks.
I'm into Andy Timmon's, Vai, Satch...
Been playing for over 30 years.
I would definitely buy this again if stolen.

I've had this pedal now for about a month and I'm still getting new sounds out of it. I'm currently using it through a Marshall Vintage Modern 2266 Head, and I'm playing a Gibson LP Custom. This combo seems to go hand in hand with this pedal because it sounds AMAZING!
I'm a big fan of Doug Aldrich and his tone, but I wasn't looking to get his exact tone. I definitely wanted to base mine around his, but ultimately create my own, and I'm more than happy with the sound I've got now.
The boost is clean and beautiful, while the drive can be everything from subtle to extreme. You can combine the two together to create fireworks, although I've never had the need to do this yet.
It also features a 3-way bass toggle switch which is VERY handy and effective.

I'd been searching for a good reliable boost pedal for a long time. When I read that Doug had been working with Majik Box to create a boost/overdrive pedal it was like all my prayers had been answered. Living in Australia there was no way to try it out at all, but knowing that someone like Doug was behind it, and considering the reviews and good things I'd heard about other Majik Box products, I had no problem with buying one outright. Best thing I ever did.
I play hard rock / alternative music in a professional touring band so I need good reliable gear at all times. The sounds and combinations of sounds you can get with this pedal by using the volume controls on a good guitar and the Marshall Vintage Modern are endless, which is exactly what I was after. This pedal's everything it's hyped up to be, and if it were stolen I'd definitely replace it. It's worth every penny.
