I'm using this with a feder bassman 59 reissue . I can get many old
sounds like cream, hendrix with out the extreme volume of a marshall plexi. the lead channel tends to get muddy when turned up .

Reliability : 7
Ive used this for a year with no problems except the power circut was
over heating at the bridge rectifier. I replaced that with a new one with a heat sink and it works fine no problems.

Not straightforward but if you have any brains at all you will figure it out. Do you know your ABCs?

Sound Quality : 10
The lead tone is good from the low mids up. The chunk sound is shit compared to a Hughes & Kettner, so I sometimes run them together. This thing is also good as a preamp as it's not noisy if set up right. I run mics through (a tip, focusrite and all that crap is a scam, the 9001 sounds better if you know how to use it and keep an open mind!) The bass is very floppy, but useful for bass. I use 2 of these units with all 6 tubes running in series to get an Ampeg tone on bass. If you are into leads, the HK are better. If you are into warm rock, the 9001 is better. If you want in between, get both.

Reliability : 5
Sure. No problems - one switch went out, so have to giggle it. The pots are also wearing out but it's an old unit so that's normal

For me, this preamp was easy to navigate. With the lead channel having two knobs, it was very familiar, since this was the way a player contolled gain on the old 4-hole heads. After owning most every piece of guitar gear known to man, this preamp was a breeze to run.

Sound Quality : 10
The sound quality is what I expect from Marshall. With the right guitar, this preamp will surprise you. No, this preamp can scare the hell out of you. If you were to take this preamp, and REALLY TURN UP THE POWER AMP it's hooked up to, running into a decent 4x12....all I can say is 'hang on'.

Reliability : No Opinion
Reliability? Here's where I'll let my cat out of the bag. I first bought 2 of these preamp because they were so cheap. And then I thought to myself, "What if one breaks down?" So, I now own 6 of these low dollar units. Reliability is no longer an issue with me now. I have since built my own footswitch....Marshall's f/s is good for about 2 months.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never dealt with Marshall or Korg USA, so I can't really comment here.

Overall Rating : 10
I'll never forget playing through my first Marshall back in '71. That amp, a 100w full stack, scared the crap out of me. When this little preamp is brought up to the volume levels of the old stacks, it REALLY scares the crap out of me. Even at much lower volumes, this preamp is the sure ticket to pure Marshall tone. With what the used market is doing right now, this preamp is probably the best bargain around in terms of what you're paying for. I wish this preamp would only have 2 additions, and then it would be perfect in my opinion....(1) a tone knob for the clean channel & (2) a better system for changing channels/functions. This preamp is a real sleeper. People ask me all the time, "What the hell is that in your rack?" Then they hear it. They're believers after about 2 solos.

I have a Jackson Soloist neck-tru with an EMG 85, you can get an AC/DC crunch to Megadeth's Rust In Peace full shred. I also have a Mesa V-Twin Pre-amp and it doesn't compare, Mesa makes a great product but it is ALWAYS a Boogie. Marshall is just plain NASTY!!! I run it through a Peavy 50/50 Power amp and a Randall 4X12, just ballsy. Clean is decent, but not a Fender. Crunch is to die for. Lead is just insane. You can combine lead 1 with lead 2 to blow your socks off. 9 only cause of the clean.

Features : 10
3 Channel, 3 12AX7 tube, all Marshall balls-to-the-wall tone. EQ in/out, great fx loop, stereo outputs, line out, 5 band EQ, "Voice" (Metallica-kill 'em all to VH), Cabinet simulator(sorry it sucks), All Marshall or nothing

Reliability : 10
This S.O.B. is tough as nails. I've had it for 2 months w/o a rack and it always delivers. I'll bet a monster truck couldn't dent the steel chasis.

Customer Support : 2
I bought it used so no warranty, they are a bunch of Brits so expect to get no service. A month ago I asked them to send a fax of the manual, and they havn't replied. Also use 10-10-321 when you call them out in New York.

Overall Rating : 10
I wan't Marshall tone and I got Mucho Marshall tone. It is all that and a bag of chips. I've tried everything and nothing hits you quite like a Marshall. I 've been playing for 6 years. In a heartbeat I would purchase this one if some dick stole it. If he did, he'd have to sleep with his eye's open.

No programmability--just a bank of knobs. It's easy to get a good sound out of it, but it loses a few points on the channel design. I got this used & without a footswitch, so to change channels I have to remember which combination of four tiny pushbuttons corresponds to what channel. A little annoying.

Sound Quality : 7
I got the 9001 because of it's "speaker simulator", since I do a lot of recording. It was a waste o' money, because it really blows. Get a SansAmp.
On the bright side, this thing sounds good when used for its primary purpose--as a guitar preamp. It's got as much gain as you need, as long as you keep good tubes in it. When they start to go, your tone gets nasty. The clean channel has very good response too. My only complaint with the character of the live tone is that the distorion lacks the warmth that I prefer. It's easy to get metal sounds with it, but forget the Gilmour tone.

Reliability : 10
Never had a problem with it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never tried to deal with them, but I can say that I can't locate a footswitch anywhere. I put this in the customer support category because Marshall is difficult to get hold of at times, and I can't find any sort of product listing that can help me out. Most companies who are very customer-oriented keep loads of info on the web.

Overall Rating : 7
Depends on what you need it for. If you want a Marshall sound for your solid-state power amp or head, then it's a darned good buy. If you want to lay that fabled tone down on tape, it's not gonna happen with the 9001, unless you're willing to turn it up and mike the cabs.

Sounds fantastic. Not noisy until its pretty saturated. The clean channel is nicer than most Marshalls, rich and warm rather than bright, crunch is what you would expect, and the lead channel is super versatile, death metal scoops, Santana buzz lead. No super warm Allmans style distortion, but close.

Features : 7
Three channels, all share a master switchable EQ, but the crunch and lead channels also have a "voice" control. No MIDI switching, and the channels switch is proprietary. The EQ is REALLY useful, five bands, allows you to make your own stew, you aren't forced into a certain style of sound. Nice f/x loop.

Reliability : 6
It's way old now, and one pot is going. Seems strong enough, but I haven't gigged with it, just used in in my house.

I was digging around in my toy section, and happened on this unit which I bough for a whopping C note a few years ago. They show up used quite a bit and sound pretty damned increcible. It would seem to me that this is a great way to get some real top end Marshall flavors for about $500, 100 for this and 400 for the power amp. What does that get you in new Marshalls? Maybe a cord? If only I had the channel switching footpedal, I'll see one used one of these days. I recorded it plugged into the f/s return of my Mesa DC-5 and it sounded real good. Grab one of these at the right price, you won't be sorry. It gets a big fat 10 since it's so cheap

Marshall All tube preamp. Very straight ahead operation. Clean/Crunch and Lead Channel. Five band EQ. Parallel/Serial Effects loop. Switchable between clean, crunch and lead channels. The EQ and Effects can be switched in or out as well. The rear panel has stereo returns for the Efx as well as stereo outs. The Efxs In/Outs have seperate level controls. There is also a switchable speaker simulator for direct studio use. Everything but MIDI.

Sound Quality : 10
Really great clean sound. The Crunch sound is also great with a Contour and drive control for a wide range of crunch from subtle to full out vintage 60's lead tones. The Lead channel is really wonderful. It has two drive controls that let you dial in all kinds of distortion from bright and nasty to warm and woolly and everthing in-between.
If you like ANY recorded Marshall sound, you'll love this preamp. I can nail Bluesbreaker to Van Halen to the most serious high gain grunge. The clean channel is the best clean sound I've heard on any Marshall. I especially like the way my guitars keep their character with even the highest gain settings.
After using a channel switching amp with my new band, I switched to this preamp and a one channel amp. I got more complements from the rest of the band on how good the preamp sounded. I've used this with 15 to 50 watt amps with all kinds of speaker cabinets and it always delivers.

Reliability : 10
I've had it (used) for 3 years and it hasen't ever let me down.

I've got a good amp tech and haven't needed to fix it yet.

Overall Rating : 10
If you want a no-nonsense, non-MIDI feature rich preamp this is it. The distortion is much more transparent than Peavey and Boogies and really lets your guitar sing.
If you find one, give it a listen. I'd buy another one in an instant.

Tube Guitar Preamp: I can't get a usable dirty sound out of this unit at any volume. It sounded decent at very low volumes in my apartment, but when playing with my band, it was hard to obtain any prominence in the mix. As with many distortions, it just doesn't cut through unless you turn it up louder. Then its so harsh and nasty sounding as to be unusable. The clean channel is fairly fat and responsive. Footswitch is hard to go from clean->crunch->lead->clean, due to clean/crunch being on the same switch.

Sound Quality : 1
This unit is borderline useless, in my opinion. Rant On: I don't know why everyone raves about marshall gear. I've heard a full rig with the 9100 and JMP-1, one of their combos and now this unit and all of them create non-musical buzzy, harsh distortion that is neither warm, singing or smooth. Basically, non-musical, IMHO. If you want a harsh, buzzing, "stab your ears with needles" distortion that is like cutting an aluminum foil log with a chainsaw, maybe Marshall is for you. Rant Off: Decent clean channel. With some effort, you can get some variety of volume with either the effects loop (with no effects) or the EQ, so the foot switch takes on new life. Still doesn't change the fact that the distortion is not very pleasing

Overall Rating : 1
I'm beginning to think that for a smooth, singing distortion that is suitable for leads and rhythms, my Peavey Rockmaster is the closest thing there is to the sound I hear in my head. I bought the Marshall 9001 hoping that it would have a better clean channel (which it did) and a better variety of usable dirty tones. This marshall (and I'm starting to believe all marshalls) has a very, very harsh distorted character that does not suit me at all. I play a variety of heavy and hard-ish music like Ozzy, Van Halen, Kiss, Bush, etc... I need a sound that fits well with a band: It needs to be audible to an audience without burying the cymbals, or the bass, or the vocals. It needs to cut through without being painful and driving people back against the rear wall of a club. in otherwords, it needs to be musical and provide a pleasant (while sustaining and rich) tone. This unit does not do that. The Crate Blue Voodoo does not do that. It is starting to feel like nothing does that. No way I'd buy this again. I doubt I'll ever even bother trying marhsall gear again.
