This is a typical stomp box pedal that runs on 9v battery or ac power. There are 6 different modulation styles. Vintage Chorus, Modern Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Step Phaser and V-Vibe. 4 controls for mode, speed, depth and regen. 2 inputs including one for an expression pedal and stereo out jacks. My only complaint for this unit is the same as the previous reviewer which is that the control knobs are hard to read when on stage. Otherwise this is an excellent pedal and very easy to operate.

The sound quality is the reason I purchased this unit. The Vintage Chorus and the V-Vibe settings are my personal favourites but the Phaser and Modern Chorus are also very useful as well. I am not a fan of Flange and the Step Phaser is a bit much for my taste. The sound is very transparent and linear as it only adds the selected modulation as needed. It is also very quiet and does not seem to suck tone away, as some of the more popular modulation pedals do. There are plenty of variations for each setting so one can find the right speed, depth and regeneration factor for whatever particular style one requires.

The RG-1 is housed in a very strong one piece metal casing and the on/off foot switch has a very sure feel to it. The pedal controls are recessed below the top point of the pedal where the foot switch is so one can not step on them and change the settings, or break the knobs either. In short, it is a rugged, durable, reliable pedal that is very gig worthy.

This is an excellent pedal made by a company which is noted for their line of powerful hi-octane amplifiers. It has more to offer than the industry standard modulation pedals offered by companies such as Boss, Electro-Harmonix, etc. at the same price point. It is every bit as tough as a Boss pedal (which I own several of, so I can make that direct comparison) and will likely last as long as any other piece of gear one uses. A great pedal to add to the chain, in any rig.

Functionally, this pedal is very easy to use. Unfortunately, the shiny crome-dome knobs are literally IMPOSSIBLE to read under stage lights. I fixed this by paiting the top of the knobs with finger nail polish, then marked them with a sharpee. I've read many reviews of different Marshall pedals with this same complaint. Come on, Marshall, take a hint.

I like the vintage chorus. It has a wide range. Set it higher for a vintage rock chorus, or set it lower for a fuller sound without any detectable chorus effect.
M.Chorus is fine, but more extreme.
Flanger doesn't impress me much, but I probably won't use it much any way. Phaser is okay. I realy like the vibe effect. Turn the Regen knob down and it almost sounds like a tremelo. Again - it has a wide range and a lot of versatility- that's one of the reasons I picked it over the other brands.
I run direct in my live set up. Seems quiet - no noise.
One drawback - the high frequencies of the signal seems to boost a little when I run it in combo with a distortion pedal. Not bad, but something I have to adjust for.
Overall, a nice sound. Doesn't sound nearly as digital as most other brands.

I play in a praise band where I run direct into a primo house system and in a classic rock band where I run through a mic'ed amp. This pedal works well in both situations. I did a lot of research and testing before I bought it. I was looking for a decent sounding, low noise pedal with lots of versatility. So far, it's worked out great with my cleaner settings. I'm still fiddling with how to get the best sounds in combination with distortion. My chain looks like this:
Custom Tele w/humbuckers (or Strat with single coils) > Boss tuner > Tube Screamer > Boss EQ > Sansamp TriAC > Marshall Regenerator > Marshall Echohead > Marshall reverb > DI > mixer (or amp).
One word of caution: all my Marshall pedals eat a lot of power. I solved this by buying a $20 One Spot adapter and daisy chained everything to it. Life's too short to hassle with batteries.

Ok got this pedal just today, but as far as a pedal goes its pretty easy if you're fingers aren't as fat as mine.
Actually its pretty simple, turn the knobs and thats that.
Though if you want to use an EXPRESSION pedal with it be sure to use
a TRS(stereo) cable.(the manual doesn't nmention this, I arsed around for a while and got it going.)

I tested it with a guitar but really use it for keyboards.
I was after a something analogue with an expression pedal but couldn't find one on the market anywhere.
I settled for this and I must say for the money its pretty good.
It does flavour the sound a bit(as you'd expect) and it doesn't like loud high frequencies whn using the "univibe" setting(you get a little clipping on the positive arc of the wave).
The step phaser can get you some pretty unique tones, it sortof acts like an areggiator but with filter frequencies as opposed to the main sound.

I've used loads of marshall gear over the years and this one is solidly built, you could use it in a bar fight and go on stage confident that it'll still work.
In any case its better put together than the old style boxes they used to sell.

I play live with an indie band and have an experimental synth studio project as well as compose for film and tv.
I play Guitar, Banjo, Synths, Bass, Sing, Drum
if it were lost or nicked I'd probably get another one as its a versatile little device and can use it on nay sound source.
I have a couple other FX units and its better that the Virtualizer but not as warm as the Tonelab(though live you can't really tell the difference).
Its more than a 1 trick pony though I'd like to see these features in an analogue product, its best feature is the expression pedal input.
If it could have jut one other feature it'd be a 2nd button(or optional footswitch) to scroll through the multiple FX rather than getting down on the floor.
It'l add to any setup and I forsee that it'll help in many situations.
Best thing is that it ree's up my hands!

Its a modulation pedal, you only really need two dials on any of these speed and width (depth), you can get everything out of these.
The manual is quite handy gives you some recommended settings these are more a starting point, they point you in the right direction for producing the sounds you want.

I play this through a maverick xtreme fed into an ns2,then running though its effects loop a cry baby marshall ed -1, jh-1, boss ge7, marshall rg-1, and vt-1, ibanez cs-9, then finally boss dm2 which is run through the amps effects loop, which is a laney tf300 combo
This is a versatile pedal, and is a very useful bit of kit to anyones rig that requires quality products at an affordable price.
As far as what sounds are avaliable:
vintage chorus is pretty good, so good in fact that marshall have now discontinued their supervibe pedal due to this.
multi chorus, this setting I don't really like much feels a little too digital and not overly useful due to the vintage chorus.
Flanger, this isn't bad, you can get the jet engine sound, or squelchy water sound and many inbetween
Phaser, this is my favourite, and what I usually have it set on, it does add a nice swell to your sound and gives it a nice bit of warmth.
Step Phaser, well its fun to mess around with, I'm sure someone will find a use for it
vibe, this isn't too bad, I tend not to use this much due to having marshalls vibatrem and I often use that for that vibe sound. but this isn't too bad, and can make some good sounds.
The pedal is quite noisy but whack it though a noise suppresor, and you wouldn't even know its on.

I use this mainly for metal playing, I find it most helpful on the phaser setting, with tweaking you can get close to that van halen sound.
If it were lost I would certainly buy another one, and I'll be getting the expression pedal for it shortly and then I think it'll be perfect.
Just be sure to use a noise suppressor cause it can be noisy when using gain, and it also kills that marshall pop that can be audiable when turned on and off.

Very easy to use. Its also quite easy to get some bad sounds out of it too just use your ears (obviously). The manual isn't really necessary to help you use it. Haven't tried it myself but I can imagine using an expression pedal is essential for live work although using it live could be risky if your planning on using more than one of the effects.

Using it mainly with an Ibanez RG through to a Marshall TSL100 both in front and in the effects loop. I found that through the loop was slightly better. The sounds are reasonable, good considering the price and versatility. Chorus was ok, not as good as a dedicated pedal. The phaser and flanger were useful as they are only effects you should use sparingly anyway. The step phaser was interesting although I was unable to find a use for it in the context of a song.

This is where I was a little disappointed. First problem was the pop everytime you switched it on or off. It was too loud to ignore and repeated if the delay was switched on. I had another marshall pedal at the time which also did the same thing. None of my other pedals have this problem. Maybe it was my setup but i tried different amps, guitars, power supplies & cables without any luck.
The second fault was that sometimes I would switch it on and nothing would come out despite the light being on. In the end I coud not trust this pedal so had to take it back to the shop after 3 weeks of trying.

Overall I was looking for a versatile pedal which could produce some descent sounds. This pedal could do that and I would've kept it apart from the loud pop when switching on or off. Curious to hear if anyone else has experienced this problem and knows how to get around it. I wanted to like this pedal and very nearly did.

Four knobs, one selecting the mode, the remaining three speed, depth and regeneration (amount of signal affected). It's easy to get a reasonable sound, but more difficult to get - or more likely, remember - the settings for each mode. For live work, it's best to try and find speed, depth and regen settings that work reasonably well for each mode, and simply select between each mode as required.

Signal path is Gibson SG, Mexican Strat or Epiphone SG (tuned to Drop B)>TU2 tuner>Electro Harmonix POG Octaver>Ibanez WD1 weeping demon Wah>Boss DD3 Digital delay>Zoom UF1 fuzz>Bozz MT2 Metalzone>Marshall bluesbreaker 2 (used for boost)>Marshall RG1 Regenerator into Laney tf300 combo. The RG1 is not a noisy pedal at all, but it can be difficult to get a good balance between a weak effect or an effect that seems to sit on top of the signal rather than affecting it, per se. Judicious use of the 'Regen' control seems to be key to avoiding this. It's particularly evident when combining the RG1 with 'dirt' pedals. The Chorus settings are pretty good, particularly the Multi Chorus, the flanger OK but can be a little weak sounding, the Phaser fine but slightly uninspiring, the step phaser all but unusuable (for me) and the univibe similation pretty OK but at low regen settings it's very close to the Chorus settings (but I guess that's the point). Couldn't get particularly close to the sound I was after (Sip of wine by Barclay James Harvest, 70's prog-rock fans), but it gets me closer than I was before. Overall the sound quality is just fine but never really great. Do bare in mind though, this is a cost-effective digital simulation of several effects so there's going to be some compromises. Understand this before you buy, and don't expect more than is reasonable and you'll be a satisfied customer. Looking forward to trying the stereo flanging (needs two amps) as this promises to be great for bigger stages!

I have used the Marshall Ch1 Chorus pedal and Bluesbreaker 2 for a number of years in a mild amount of live use. Never once have they given me cause for concern; testiment to Marshall's design and manufacturing quality. They don't even look used after this period. Buy with confidence.

Been playing five to six years, live for the last two. Music is a rare old mix of punky stuff with a U2/Stereophonics/Blondie delivered with an experimental bent. And Didgeridoo (www.tetratum.com). The RG1 is a good enough piece of equipment - eminently capable but not really that inspiring. If it were stolen, I wouldn't be particularly upset as they're readily available, consistent and cheap enough so I'd just buy another. I'd probably sulk a little at the thief's cheek though. I don't really love anything about it, but I certainly don't hate anything either. My favourite feature is really the versatility in a compact, study pedal, and it doesn't really compare that easily with other products barring a dedicated 'all in one' multi-effects unit - which isn't a like-for-like comparison. It does help me make music, but I'm afraid it's sheer competence is also the cause of slight blandness and a lack of inspiration.

the pedal does master the individual effects to a fashion but dont expect to hear anything like a phase 90 or a mxr flanger or dunlop univibe from this as the sounds are all pretty sterile, also the noise in background is terrible all sorts of spuradic noises hisses, farts, burps the lot!whe the notes tail away you can hear distortion creeping in,i thought the pedal was faulty and took it back to shop but the replacement was the same
