from the first series of maxon pedals, the compandor is a compressor similar to the cp-101,dynacomp and ross.one of the few comps that doesnt destroy your guitars tone.

i've owned the re-issue maxon cp-101,and the compandor sounds similar.however it sounds a little fatter and warmer.very round and creamy sounding.ab'd with a reissue dynacomp the mxr is noticably brighter sounding. the compandor has a huge volume boost available and works as a perfect clean boost for fat, clean solos.
it never sounds fake or ''pumpy'' like some comps and it can squash the heck out of your signal or be so subtle that you dont realize its on.
oh yeah, its the quietest comp i've ever owned too.
i use an 80's strat through a 70's roland jc 60,and the compander really adds a nice ''tube like'' roundness to the bright tone of the jc.

what can i say,1974 and still works like a charm.mines all original and they used a nice dp3t switch for these. i believe its wired true bypass too,no tone sucking issues when its inline.
this pedal is perfectly designed.small mxr enclosure and boss japan square style barrel jack on the right side, below the input jack not above it so it doesnt get in the way of your patch cable like an old dod with the 1/8'' mini jack.
they were way ahead of their time with this little box.
it may be the first compact pedal compressor and it gets my vote as the best.

i cant imagine a ross sounding any nicer than this, its one of the few comps that you can leave on all night.but i use mine to help clean strat/tele solos sit at the head of the class.
