It has the same controls as my Maxon ST-9. Volume, OD, Tone, and Mid Boost. It is very easy to use and to find the right tone and OD that one wants.

Awesome, it is like an original Ibanez TS-808. I can get the same tone and sound as of my original TS-808 but this pedal has more to offer in tone a nd OD. Although it is just very very slightly different than my Maxon ST-9 at extremes; this pedal has the same tone as the Maxon ST-9.
Great pedal for both OD and Distortion pedal.

The switch is a tiny bit flimsy but as long as you don't but something that is over 20 lbs. on it, it will last.

Having lots of 808 and 9 series, I've have to admit that this is the best drive pedal I've ever owned.
Its not a high gain pedal like cheap Boss Metal Zone or V-twin, Rocktron stuffs, and any other bootique high gain pedal out there.
But its a gorgeous tone maker.
Rich and natural real tube amp sounding drive pedal that has just enough gain to nail any modern rock, alternative music.
On my Bronx amp, it makes me cry....!
good ol Super Tube Screamer!

I play grunge, alternative, blues, recently into fusion and soul.
Playing for 17years, I was lucky to have had all the 'holy grail' of all the drive pedal some are over $800.
But ST-01 The Super Tube Screamer is the key to my $9500 worth pedal gig.
I have Ibanez ST-9 for backup which is the same model but the brand name. Just two of these make up nearly $1000.
But I think it worth while.
enough said, Get one if you can find this mega rare pedal from the 80s.

MAN!
It's like a hyper tube-screamer! A tube screamer with more puch and gain! But the same smoothness stays in it!
I have lots of 808 wannabees and any good overdrive pedal in the market. Fulltone, TKI, Sobbat, TS-9 reissues, Ts-808 reissues, Boss OD-1, Keeley BD-2, Rat, MXR, and original Ts-808,Ts-9.
But nothing I had a enough gain for the Tubey distortion.
I've tried Ibanez ST-9 which has exactly the same circuit as the ST-01. And I was amazed with it! I bough it for $325 and lost it right after the week. But then I saw the ST-01 on Ebay that was on $359, So I got my Super Tube Screamer on my pedal gig.!
Shortly let me say that, this pedal is a TS-808 with more gain and bites. Using with my Maxon OD-9(for boost), TS-808(original), SD-9(black label). Its not noisey and just here to growl!
I had many bootique distortion pedal but only my SD-9 and this one stays! Even my good old PUE-5 Tube and V-twin can't match with this baby.
Best sounding Distortion pedal ever! with 2 JRC 4558d chips, it cant go wrong.

If you are looking for an overdrive pedal that has more gain and versatilty than the original TS-808 or TS-9, Just go on and find it!
I have my SD-9 which is more fuzzy and brighter than ST-01, ST-01 is more smoother and rich sounding to my SD-9.
For $359 used. It may be expensive. But for the quality, its a DEAL.
If you find this anthing below $300 Just grab it! Unless you have any $15000 worth Rack mounted system.

I use Les paul custom, 52 telecaster,Ibanez...
It is not actually noisey! I have the drive at minimum, volume at max, mid range at 11 o'clock, tone at 10 o'clock for boost. I use a JCM 800. It is very very nice sounding. It is as good as my Ts-808. In fact, you can get the same sounds as a ts-808 from these babies! These have 2, not just 1 but 2 JRC 4558 chips in them!!!!!!!! What a treat!!! These are exactly the same as the Maxon st-9 or the Ibanez st-9. The sound EXACTLY the same. The have the same circuit! It is a ts-808 vith more gain and crunch, but in a good, not bad way. It is the BEST tubescreamer I have ever used!

Simpley the best ever. When driving an ap it is pacted full of gain without the fuzziness. If it was stolen, I will no be able to replace it since they are stupidly rare. As I said, They are dam expensive. An average one is about $350-400. These were only sold in Japan, thats why. If you can't find one, get an Ibanez St-9, Not as rare, But still smashing!! Buy it just for the 2 JRC 4558 chips!

This is just a follow-up review to the one I did months (?) back.
Just out of curiousity, I opened up this box, and guess what ...
I found not just one ... but TWO (!!!) JRC4558D chips inside!!!
Boy, talk about chips ahoy!
No wonder this thing sounds so darn good! And to think someone hated it so much he wanted to get rid of it! Well, to each his own, I guess

It's still one of those pedals that I won't ever part with. It's proven its worth time and again as a basic overdrive unit, as a tone booster and shaper, and more.
I'm still surprised that there aren't any other reviews of this unit here, but I do hope to see more in the near future.

I'm using a MIJ Fender Strat into a Fender Champ 25-SE. Favorite setup goes like this: guitar into Boss CS-1, Vox Valvetone, Maxon Super Tube Screamer, SansAmp GT-2, into a Boss DE-200 digital delay and a Digitech GSP 5.
It's got 'the tone' that I've been looking for in the Tube Screamer family. I also recently got a modded TS-9 that sounds good, but the Maxon still tops 'em all.
Got it from a swap. Got it from a guy who hates the thing for its 'weak distortion.' I never realized what he had until he brought it and showed me one day ... (and I had to feign ignorance ...) Anyway, we tried it in the music store he was working in ... plugging it into a Fender Jazzmaster into a Princeton 65 amp. I couldn't believe my ears!
Even at its lowest gain setting, it had that warmth and presence of a tube amp. Set to higher settings, it sounds great likewise.
Took it home later that night. Ran it before my SansAmp GT-2 (using the clean Fenderish setting). Unbelievable! Even on an MIJ Strat, it nails those Stevie Ray, Scott Henderson tones.
I never really believed that you could actually use a Tube Screamer and just set it at zero gain and get a good sound, but this one does it.
The added bonus, is of course, the mid boost switch and the tone control. This gives you the option of further tone shaping and coloring.

When I first got it, it had problems with the on/off switch. Tweaking any of the four knobs made the pilot light (and the whole effect) go off. I thought it needed major repair. But, one day, I just thought of putting in a fresh battery. Voila! No more problems!

For someone who's gone through that whole tube screamer craze, I've heard quite a lot of TS-9s and TS-9 wannabes, enough to make a good judgement. In my opinion, the Maxon Super Tube Screamer is a highly under-rated overdrive pedal.
When I first got it, I tried looking up the Harmony Central site to get a review, but alas, there were none. This also possibly explains the rarity of this pedal. If you see one, buy it! Well, then again, if your concept of tone is Stevie Ray, Scott Henderson and all those Strat cats with a definitive single-coil sound, this is YOUR pedal.
It's amazing how I saw an ad posted in the net, selling this thing for as high as $350!!! Wow! And to think I just got swapped a ProCo Rat2 for it. Much as I love that Rat pedal, I would have given more just for this Maxon.
I'm not sure if this ST-01 has the same identical wiring as the Ibanez Super Tube Screamers, but from reading their reviews, there were some guys who claimed they did. There is a strong possibility though.
Moral of the story: One man's gripe is another man's 'holy grail.' Having a good network of guitar playing friends sure paid off well in my case. If you're looking for something, tell as many people as you can. You'll never know it, but the very thing that you've been looking for could very well be in the hands of that person you least expect it to come from.
That's what happened in my case.
