as the mf101 is an enveloppe follower, the filter is directly linked with the input level, so you have to be carefull to adjust corectly
(with the in led)

you can also use the pedal in the bypass mode: the sound flows trought the preamp, and even if the effect is of, the sound gtes
thicker! try it with music material, bass guitar or anything you need!
what is great is that EVERY parameter is CV controlable: if you have a modular system, you can command the filter cutoff, for
exemple with ADSR, LFO...
i have compared this filter with a minimoog's one and honestly don't have found any diference!

i also have an electroHarmonix QTRON, more basic an sound more like an effect, cooler with my basse on stage!
i love the sound and the beauty : look the wooden cheecks!
.. i can place it on a keyboard (...with a solina string ensemble or a DX7!), i can place it on the mixing bord, above the modular
system, no coment!
if you want to hear th e way i use it, email me or join the new website of my group : www.scotch.fr.st

Easy to dial in as to what sound you are searching for. The manual is complete and you should have very little problems getting it to work

The filter does the job. But I hear a slight wah when you by-pass the filter. There is a slight alteration to the sound when you click it off. I am not happy with that. Its not very noticeable but it is to me. But the sound when turned on is good. But It gets to me when I hear it off. I do like a natural sound of the bass also. I would try another filter to see if there is a change to the natural sound of your bass. I will try others. And I think you should try them all until you find a good filter. I would recommend something else but I have not tried alot of them. I did adjust everything the unit has to offer to hear if say the drive was too high or the output, etc etc. So I did work with it.

I overpaid for this unit. You can buy it for 235.99 or alttle more or less. I would try the Mutron or the EBS unit before I set my mind into buying the Mooger Fooger MF-101. If the slight addition to your sound when in bypass does not upset you than it is a good unit. I may get some feedback from lovers of the unit. But I would try and hear the differences. A/B it and hear for yourself. If you like it buy it. I am not saying you should do what I say. All I am saying to try all of them before you buy this unit.

Fairly easy to get a good sound, like all envelope filter, you have just play with it untill is sound good. The manual tells you more than every thing you need to know about its useage. I can get a good Sir psycho sexy sound out of it. I lke it more than the Q-tron. Its got more parameters to mess with, but when you get it right down right funky.

I'm usung a Phillip Kubicki four string ex factor bass, and a Lab series 100 watt head with a 15 inch speaker. I love Stevie Wonders enveloped sound and it think Flea has had soume great sound too using a mutron I think. It is very clean an rich sounding. If you love the analog enveloped sound shell out the dough is worth it.

I like funk jazz fusion kind of stuff. I have a reissue Q-tron. A cry baby bass wha wha, this is a great pedal too. I'm kind of a envelope filter freak. I'm getting a reissue Mutron III because all of the old ones I have tried seem to be messed up. I'm sure there a great ones out there but I dont have too much luck with the old ones.
The Moogerfooger essentially is one Bad Mother of an envelope filter. Ya Know?

When I first tried this out at a music store, I found it to be completely unusable. It wasn't until I already owned a MoogerFooger pedal that I went back and understood what I was dealing with, and even then, I only sketched out the possibilities of what could be done, and bought the pedal in good faith-- after all, my MF 12-Stage Phaser is nearly flawless.
Even if you know what you're getting into, nothing with this much control is completely simple. All of the front panel knobs can be controlled via expression pedal, and there is even an Envelope Out jack, allowing the signal from the envelope follower to send control signals to anything else with an expression pedal input.
The pedal will sweep from where your knob is set, and up to the top range of your pedal's sweep-- I would have liked to dial in the top end of my sweep. If you don't want to sweep your cutoff from 200hz up into the stratosphere, there is a lot of subtle footwork to be done; I would love to be able to set a sweep so that heel down is, say 175, and toe down is 500, giving the full play of an expression pedal over just the range I want. But that's nit-picking, I suppose.
A more valid complaint in the "speed" switch. For a pedal with so much control, why are we limited to a Slow and Fast envelope follower switch, instead of a knob to dial in exactly what we want. Though "Fast" is a bout as fast a tracking as I'd like, "Slow" isn't nearly slow enough for some things I'd like.
An effects loop, for fuzz or echo, would have been nice, too.

I'm a bassist with anti-traditionalist flavor. The compliments that come my way are the unwitting coments that come my way about the synths and guitars in my recordings, when it is really all the bass (horribly twisted by imagination and effects). All this leads me away from trying to play like other people: I don't want to emulate my heroes, I don't want to play music that sounds like everything else...
I bought this pedal because I wanted a foot-sweepable, resonant filter. I liked the thought of slowly sweeping in high end, squelchy lead lines in an electronica fashion, or squelching in acid bass parts. This pedal excells at both.
The "Mix" knob is a great ally when using deeper cutoff settings, and lets a very clean, dry signal through. 2-pole filtering is brighter, while the 4-pole filter is deeper, sucking more high end, but providing thicker sweeps. I have noticed that in 4-pole mode, there is a distinct, though not to prominent, tone under your signal. That is what keeps this from a "10". (I hate when people give Sound Quality a 10, and then begin to describle the sound's flaws).
The resonance can be cranked to the point of self-oscillation, too, making this a nice tone-generator, as well.

For a long time, I have wanted a real-time controlled filter, and now that I have one, I wouldn't give it up, except maybe for a Lovetone Meatball. As with any Big Briar pedal, my complaints aren't about the pedal's stated purpose, but about little things that it could have done differently... personally, I think that this pedal is great at what it does. It sounds fantastic and is extremely controllable.

I ordered mine off the net merely based on reviews here and mp3 samples on the net. So in other words, I didn't have a test drive. When I first took it out of the box, I couldn't get any effect out of it at all. Obviously I didn't read the manual! The manual gives you a nice quick walk through of how to set it up and how envlope filters work. After that little intro with the manual, I was off like mad; making noises from blubber bass to bird chirps. Once you play with it, you'll suddenly become aware of how each of the different knobs relate to the other. Nice smooth on/off switch too!
I'm giving it a 7 because there are a few variables one needs to consider. If you have the foot controllers, obviously the ease of use becomes greater. If you have a setting that you use and never deter from it, then yeah the thing is real easy to use. But you do have to play around with the unit to figure out the relationships between the different parts of the filter. Me, I'm a knob tweaker. I'm always changing the settings. I had to have the EP-1 foot controllers for it.

I play this unit mostly with my guitar. Although, I have to admit, it sounds much better on my bass (much fuller sound). I have the MF-101 in my effects loop in my preamp. The effects loop goes WH-1 > Boomerang > MF-101 > and back to the preamp. By placing the Whammy before the MF-101, you get a nice envelope effect on both pitches (when the whammy is in harmonize mode); also there is distinct seperation between the two pitches once it goes through the MF-101. I can mimic "On The Run" by Pink Floyd with the Boomerang > MF-101 set up. Whaddala waddlula whaddala wheeedala....
I don't have any problem with unwanted noise from the MF-101. I did have some noise issues with the EP-1 pedal. Tom from Big Briar is working with me on solving this issue (see customer service section).
I only gave this unit an 8 because I have heard the Meatball pedal by Lovetone and *REALLY* like that unit. But... I don't have the $500 to buy a Meatball. I do love the sound of this unit, though.

The MF-101 by itself is extremely reliable. I have some concerns aobout the EP-1 though. I haven't started gigging with it, but I don't forsee any problems with it. Wished it had a hard wired cord instead of the power adapter.

You can call or write them an email and will get a response from them rather quicky. (I got one within an hour once!) If you call, you are not talking to a person with a prepared script of troubleshooting topics; you are talking with someone who knows the pedal inside and out. Tom was extremely patient and even listened through the phone to hear the static sounds I was getting from my EP-1. How about that?!? Nice people, very helpful.

I'm a noise player; into experimenting with sound. This thing can be wild and crazy while it can also be smooth and subtle. If it were to be stolen or lost at a gig, I'd have a hard time deciding whether to replace it with another MF-101 or go with the Meatball.
Again, I wished it had a hard wired power cord instead of the A/C adapter. Who needs another wall wart?
It's a great pedal, it sounds really good right after an octave pedal and before a delay. I do recommend getting the expression controllers for it. That really make the thing more versitile than any of the other low-pass/envelope filters out there.

Concepts behind its operation are pretty simple, but you can play around with it for hours and keep finding new subtle variations. That's the beauty of analog. If you have even a basic understanding of synthesizers, you'll have no problem using this.

Its the real thing, alright. I'm very happy with how this sounds. I'm a keyboard player. My most common use for this is to use it as an additional filter for the signal coming from my Access Virus. The Virus is a great virtual analog synth, and it has nice filters, considering its digital nature. By itself, it does a decent mini-moog impersonation. As you would guess, the Moogerfooger brings it quite a bit closer to the warm minimoog sound. But its cool to run anything at all into it.
Along with the expected killer sound comes the expected noise. This is not a quiet pedal by any means. I don't mind. To my ears, digital keyboards benefit from being moved into a more low-fi environment.

Have only had it a few months. I thought the knobs were sturdy, but moving it around one day I happened to clip one of them against a solid object. There went the knob. Seems like it shouldn't have broken due to such a light collision. Until I replace it, I'm twiddling the little plastic stump. Gotta treat this thing with kid gloves.

I highly recomend this for keyboard players. Wouldn't presume to know what guitarists like. Haven't compared it to, for instance, the Mutron. That's brand loyalty for you. Why would a keyboard player use a Mutron or EH pedal when you can have something with the word "Moog" in it?

I only tried it in a shop. I am a guitarist dabbling with synths and keyboards as well. I am used to the MiniMoog and therefore I find this module extremely easy to understand and operate. I tested it with a guitar, but I really also wanted to test it with a stringer, clav or best the MiniMoog itself. Never got round to that. The number of possibilities in this little MothaFooger is way ahead. The plugs in the rear proves that we are really dealing with a true modular Moog synth module! Fully patchable on all parameters. What a marvel. I wish I could take it home and hook it up to the Mini's CV controls. you can obviously hook it up to the other MoogerFoogers, such as the 12-step Phaser. You could for instance take the Phasers LFO output and route it to the LowPass pedals Resonance input and get the famous MiniMoog filter sweep. No the possibilities are way too many for a brief description.

Superb. Everything I expected. This is the MiniMoogs famous filter in a box with a small envelope follower. The Minis usual sensitivity and resonance parameters are there for you. Even the point of self-oscillation. This pedal can be used for really funky playing. I suspect it can be used very advantageously for bass, clav and other such instruments with an attack. I would definitely use this pedal it with a MiniMoog, to approach the Moog Modular. A Mini with two filters and an extra envelope is just too cool.

I play prog rock. The Mini is an icon of the genre. The Moog Modular is legendary. The MoogerFoogers are really like having a reissue of the Moog Modular modules. The possibilities are endless. I think I need all of these pedals, and maybe even more than one of each. the 9 rating is not 10 because they are a bit on the expensive side, and only therefore.

Manual was clear and easy to understand. I'm a big fan of sitting and tweaking 'till you get what you want, so I didn't read much aside from how best to take care of it. Knobs & switches are big, sturdy & easy + excellent indicator lights for on/off, drive, & signal. Smooth as silk footswitch too.

I play a Warwick Streamer LX 5 through (in order acc. to signal path) EBS Octabass, MF101 (used to be a Q-Tron but no more!), SansAmp Bass Driver, & EBS Multi-Comp into an Ashdown ABM500 head out of a Bag End Q10BX-D. The MF101 is a dead quiet, definitive "swank" enveloped effects unit with enough synth to take it far beyond the Boss SYB-3. This thing tracks 16th notes without lapse - try that with the Boss! The Q-Tron is much noisier and greasier & the Mu-Tron (a longtime fave) just doesn't provide the ease of use (you have to crank open the back to set dip switches - not a gig-friendly feature!).
I can get my favorite Stuart Zender swank, along with a great deal of Bootsy. The reverse drive function that is on both the Q-Tron & Mu-Tron does not exist on the MF101, so this may be something you miss. I only used my Q-Tron in one drive direction and to be honest, the MF101 can generate so many other tomes and effects, I don't miss that particular flexibility. Plus, this thing holds a low B without fail!

I contacted Big Briar before purchasing it. They weren't able to comment on A-B testing they'd done with the Q-Tron & Mu-Tron, which was sort of diappointing since it is _the_ competition in this range of effects pedals. I had to go by the one .wav file for Bass they had on thier website. But, they were as helpful and friendly as could be, and I do trust that in the event I have questions or difficulties, they'll be able to help.

I reccommend getting it from Bass Central in Florida or LA Bass Exchange. They kill the $299 list price!
I am in a sometimes heavy-always funky rock band. This goodie makes its way onto many a tune. After playing for 13 years and looking for the perfect "swank" pedal for the past 4, I am absolutely ecstatic at this find! If stolen, destroyed, or lost, I'd be getting another pronto! The combination of envelope and low pass filter create unreal synth bass an wah tones. It's just phenomenal. It would be nicer to have it in a smaller package, but when you consider that I got a Moog-made pedal for about $20 more than a Q-Tron or Boss SYB-3, less than a Mu-Tron, and better tahn any auto-wah on the market, it's worth the bulk! This will be a mainstay in my rig for many, many years.

At first it may seem difficult to use, but after a look at the instructions it is easy to get a good fat tone. With addition of an expression pedal, which can control either of the four knobs, it is easy to get a vatiety of different sounds while jamming.

I play my bass through it and get great sound out of it, but any sound signal can be fed through the pedal. It has a good range on the filter side, ranging from the wettest to the filtered tuba like sound. This is possibly the greatest pedal I have ever played with. Since its analog there is no weakness in the effect unless you want there to be.

This pedal is great for funk or space, or ambient anything. If tweaked right the pedal itself oscilates creating a piercing mini-moog like squelch that can be played with. I personally wouldn't trade for any Mu-tron or Q-tron or any pedal for that matter.
