I'm giving the "Ease of Use" rating a 5, but maybe it deserves a 10 because you can get a GOOD sound out of just about any setting. I'm serious. But "good sound" does not necessarily mean, "Practical in every single musical situation".
This is definitely not as simple as your basic overdrive (level, gain, tone). Make sure you read the manual; it will introduce you into the world of synths (if you're not there already!) with a little bit of physics-class tech talk. Don't be scared! You can learn a lot.
Here's a trick:
When trying to get a tone I would like out of it, I pay attention to the right side of the pedal first--the Mix and Frequency knobs and the Lo/Hi rocker switch. Then I look at the left side, the LFO Amount and Rate knobs, and Sqare/Sine waveform rocker switch.
The Frequency knob is probably the single most important one to be familiar with, in both the LO and HI settings.

This is the single greatest pedal I have ever owned and I waited two and a half years to get it, stewing over is sonic capabilities.
I'm playing a Schecter Tempest Custom with real Seymour Duncans ('59 neck/Distortion bridge) into a ProCo Turbo Rat, into the Ring Mod, through two Boss pitch shifters, a flanger, two delays, and a BBE Sonic Maximizer 482i into a Fender solid state 1x12. Waiting to get that Mesa head and Orange cab...
For those of you who are all nutty about everything being True Bypass, I've got news for you... If you're running pedals, you need a good buffer to drive your signal. The Drive knob is constantly active, even when the pedal's effect is off. Turn it up, and you'll get a nice, smooth, natural overdrive. I keep it directly in the middle, but I noticed it made my guitar sound warmer and more rich (mmmmmhmm ANALOG!), and works beautifully with my Turbo Rat.
The pedal takes no time trying to "track" what you're playing like some pitch shifters and octavers will, where you can tell it's just following up behind your notes. The Ring Mod is right there with you. On more gentle settings (even in HI mode), you can play chords and it will fully respond.
On the LO setting, you will get a fantastic tremolo. The Frequency knob acts as the rate knob. But wait! What about the LFO Amount and Rate knobs? Turn them up a little bit and you'll find that the tremolo changes--it will speed up, then slow down, then speed up, then slow down, according to the settings you choose. This is the most unique thing I've ever heard in a trem and this pedal isn't even dedicated to just that!...
As for me, I keep my business in the Mile HI Club. The sweet spot on the Mix knob for your guitar tone to come through, but very affected, is about 11:30, or between 4 and 5. The Frequency control is now out of this world! One of my favorite things to do is to "tune" the Frequency knob. Turn the LFO Amount all the way down, play an open D on your guitar, and turn the Freq. until it matches the pitch of the string (it's touchy doing this, but stable). It will sound pretty normal if you keep hitting the string while open, but once you move up the neck, the Ring Mod emerges! Of course, I flirt around with the LFO section as well. Everything sounds amazing. Big, dissonant, in-your-face tone that's great for funky or even downright aggressive leads.
Don't forget that the oscillator works by itself. Plug the carrier out into your pedal chain and you'll get pure Hi-Fi analog oscillator tone, the same as what you get out of a real Moog synth.
I don't experience extra noise with this pedal, but then again, I don't own a 100-watt half-stack [YET], and I like noise anyway. Right now everything is confined to bedroom rocking and church worship band gigs.
By the way, recently I had this in my pedal chain while playing bass at my church. We played a loud song at the end of our set, and did a big rock-and-roll drum crash thing to finish good and strong. I kneeled down and twisted the knobs on the Moogerfooger during this. Afterward, people were coming up to me and asking, "What the heck was THAT?"

I'm relatively gentle on my pedals, but I heard some stuff about the Moogerfoogers not being the greatest as far as build quality is concerned...
YOU GUYS ARE ALL DEAD WRONG. THIS PEDAL IS BUILT SPECIFICALLY WITH ABUSE IN MIND.
The knobs are solid. The jacks are solid. The switch feels "soft", but it is soundly and securely placed.
I took the bottom plate off - DANG. That plate is actually pretty heavy for its size and you definitely would NOT want to drop it on your foot.
When I looked inside, I found that the wooden sides extend inward, meaning, they are actually twice as wide as what you see on the outside. They're not going to break, ever. The circuit board is securely in place between the wood panels.
The bottom row of jacks, for Audio Out/LFO Out/Carrier In/Carrier Out, are POINT-TO-POINT wired to the circuit board, as well as the On/Off switch itself! Which means easy repair.
It looks very clean inside... In fact, it looks like a work of art to me. Everything was very well thought out.

I haven't had to deal with for my own Ring Modulator...
I used to work for a MAJOR musical instrument retailer and I would call them up with questions regarding special orders/availability. They always answered within business hours and were very respectful over the phone. Come to think of it, it might have been just one or two ladies I ever talked to in two years.
Excellent service!

I've been playing guitar for over eight years and I've been a complete junkie for pedals for about seven of those years. I play rock/hardcore/metal, but I also love synths and really spacey sounds and would love to incorporate both in a single band. Currently, I'm sneakily trying to implement this more and more into the worship gigs I play at my church.
This Ring Mod, combined with my two pitch shifters and delays, creates such a wide array of sounds that my roommates even make comments on it still. ("Oh yeah, that must be the Moog. What are you doing right there?") It's a huge source of inspiration in how I think about music and in my playing itself.
In the two years it took me to get this pedal, I toyed once with a ZVex Ringtone and it was really cool, but I told not myself not to bother because I knew the Moogerfooger's versatility would completely obliterate it. I don't even have an expression pedal for this yet!
As mentioned above, the Moogerfooger Ring Modulator is hands down my favorite pedal. It is one of the most musical-sounding pieces of equipment I've ever had my hands on, not to mention that it's built solid. I plan on using this regularly for the next decade, or beyond.

i currently play in a dub band and this pedal is great for spaceship sweeps from the organ or using a ringmodded clav to second the snare hits. sounds great through some delay. i just wanted to point out one great CV trick that someone showed me. this involves plugging the carrier out into the audio in, then plugging the audio out into an amp/effects. this will let you hear the internal oscillator which can be modulated by the LFO. this gives you an analog synth sans keyboard, great for effects and fun!

Great tremolo on this unit, The ring thing isn't my bag, but it's there and in your face. I had the Empress Trem unit but sold it as the sound was no where near the Fooger and I didn't need all those extra features, I don't like the fact the the drive knob alters the overall volume when the unit is shut off - likely not true bypass. But man it sounds fabulous!!

If you know LFO's from synth, this is pretty much the same. Knobs for amount, rate, mixing between audio signal and effect, drive and freqency and high/low square/pulse wave. To get the sound you want is neither easy or hard but my suggestion is to write down or take a photo of your settings.

The main job to the ringmod in my eyes is to mess the sound up. And my opinion is that it is fully capable of doing this. You can get twisted, detuned synth-like sounds, pulsating high-fqz stuff, but altso tremolo and vibrato effects.
I have used this mainly on guitar with clean and dist setting but altso some synths.
Distortion sounds great combined and with the right settings some guitar picking, the ringmod and a tape eco sounds like a sound-schizofrenia.
The downsides however are pretty serious.
The bleedtrough is really really bad. When in bypass mode you can still hear the frequency in the back of the soundscape even when you are not playing the guitar.
The other problem is changing settings during playing. This can be done in two ways and non of them are pretty ideal as i have tried both.
The first one is to do it manually with your hands/feets whatever.
The good part here is that you get everything as you want it to be.
The bad part is of course that you would rather prefer NOT to stop playing midgig to get down on the floor to edit.
The second one is expression pedals.
The good part here is that you can adjust the knobs as you play.
The bad part is that the accuracy is crappy with exp-pedals, and with a stompbox like 102 the accuracy is extremly important due to very sensetive settings.

By its design and function its not an easy to use .Knobs have a wide range and alot of sounds can be pulled out of it .
but I guess the question is "is it hard to get a good sound out of it?" no . A few knob tweaks and you will stumble on all kinds of great sounds .
The knobs are reliable though . the same knob settings get same sounds ,unlike my Zvex Fuzz factory that the same settings sounnd different on different days

The sound quality is all I could ask for . Warm and beautiful . When I bought it I wasnt too sure about the line level output aspect of it . The level knob is always active , even when the effect is bypassed . But its great . adds warmth to the signal and can boost too a decent overdrive if you that way inclined . I leave it with just a tiny bit of clip if I really hit the strings and it sounds great when bypassed to me . It is pristine sound in my opinon

I would depend on it. I agree with some others here on some aspects though. its alot lighter than I expected and the base plate does feel flimsy . The knobs feel ok and the rocker switchs seem solid enough . Weirdest thing is the power supply I got (im in australia) doesnt fit into the back properly. The tip barrell is too short and if I knock the pedal the power supply falls out . The dealer here has told me it's not a usual thing and they'll source a new one but for the price it's not what I would expect .
The moog expression pedal I bought with it is also dissapointing . All molded plastic and not smooth under foot. Feels very ratchety. It will do the job for now though .

I love this thing . It's made me a little anti social musically since I've had it. Bells, tremelo, vibrato , robotic atonal modulations .It makes my guitar sound like something else which you either love or hate . And I love having the ability to totally destroy and rebuild my sound . Ring mod is a weird effect and can make you instrument totally foreign to you .
There is tons of info and reviews out there about what this can do so I'm going to sum it all up in my eyes
.
There arnt any other pedals I've bought that have dragged me into new area's of my playing . this thing has made me explore tonalities in a different way ,cause you have to . It's not a normal effect (apart from its tremelo setting which are great too ) and you have to change your objectives if you want to use it musically . In my eyes that's worth way more than the $410 I paid for it

Like all moogerfooger pedals this one is rather tricky to get a handle on but once you do it is very intuitive...it helps to have a basic understanding of analog synths as this pedal, like all moogerfoogers, is pretty much based around an analog modular synth design, especially considering that the knobs are VERY wide ranging, unlike almost all other effect pedals.

The best, and I do mean THE BEST analog ring modulator made. I use this pedal in conjunction with the moogerfooger lowpass filter and phaser (and have the new analog delay on order). I also use a fender telecaster, and PRS hollowbody, a few analogman effects, and a vox wah. This effect will do anything from robot, synth type sounds to a warm lush tremelo to all out pich bended ring mod madness. I do have to say that this pedal works best in conjunction with the moogerfooger lowpass filter. I mean you can get great sounds out of this pedal by itself but with the lowpass filter and the ring modulator you can really get that squirty, fat, liquid, moog sound out of your guitar, keyboar, bass, whatever. These pedals are quiet as hell and can accommodate any input due to their drive controls. Speaking of which, you can overdrive the pedal's input stage and get some really great overdrive sounds out of it. With the ringmod set to tremelo (which involves setting the frequency switch to low and the mix up) and plugged into a lowpass filter you can get some great "autowah" sounds as the ringmod modulates the filters sensitivity...like nothing you've ever heard before. You can even send the LFO out from the ringmod into the cutoff in on the lowpass and it will modulate the cutoff frequency of the lowpass. Anyway, this pedal, as all moogerfoogers, sounds amazing and really is worth every penny. I reccommend this setup: guitar-ring mod-lowpass-phaser-delay-amp. It works the best for me but experiment with other settings as well to get different sounds. I just particularly like the lowpass filtering the ringmod but the other way around can create some great sounds as well.

I have never contacted moog music but this pedal seems made to last for a very long time and the instruction manual that comes with it is very informative (pretty much a crash course in analog synthesis) so I doubt I'll ever be contacting moog music.

It doesn't get a 10 cause it is very expensive but in this case you really do get what you pay for and this means the best sounding analog effect you'll ever have the pleasure of using. It really seems an injustice to call this a guitar pedal, all the moogerfoogers are studio quality anaolg effects that are built to use on the floor. Moogerfoogers can be used on any insturment in any situation for any type of music and I highly reccommend them to anyone interested in the warm, liquid sound sounds of analog synths.

If you take the time to read the manual beforehand and have a basic knowledge of physics, then you should not have a problem. It does take a while to get used to the various knobs and understand what they do. But that is "part of the thrill" when using this type of unit.
The manual is extremely well written.

My setup is fairly basic: Fender Jaguar 1967, MF Ring Mod, VOX Wah into a Marshall AVT275. This is the weirdest effects pedal I've ever used. At the LO setting you get really slow tremelo/vibrato effects.
HI setting produces sum and difference frequencies - giving your notes a dissonant effect, siren or spaceship sounds!
I don't think I'll find much use for the HI settings (although I'm only really starting out with it) - the tremelo/Vibrato is great.

I love the weird synth noises you can get from the HI settings. But from a usability perspective....it's just good to experiment with and nothing else. The LO settings for me are more usable.

At first I thought I would have little use for this pedal, but the more I studied it I decided it had great possibilities. I was expecially interested in its LFO CV out. I wanted that to modulate my MF101 Low Pass filter. But on its own the MF102 is a great pedal. It can produce some fantastic tremolo. When pushed into higher speeds the wacky metallic ring mod sounds make this an unearthly sound machine. I use it for experimental and ambient guitar. There is plenty of gain to use this for slight overdrive. Like the other MF pedals, the MF102 becomes more powerful when used in conjunction with other MF pedal. The CV outs make these pedals very unique.

When you get several racked, the three wall warts power supplies are cumbersome.

Very difficult to use. It is not very clear how the four knobs works together. You have to try and try and try for several hours before you get your desired sounds. Then you have find out the waweform-button (thats easy though) and the lo/hi-button (who make a dramtic change to the sound).

When you finally find out, that the 102 are divided in two - a leslie-chorus-tremolo-effect and a crazy synth, you will be pleased, that the analog sound of modulation a much fatter and clearer than a digital stompbox. You can get a really fantastic leslie-speaker simulation, that I have never heard before. When you want something completely different, you can either swith from lo to hi or turn up the freq - you will get a never-heard-before synth.
I'm a guitarist, and I'm using Gibson Les Pauls and Yamaha Strat-clones (Pacificas). I think, it work best with humbuckers, but that could be me.

You have to get a last one expressionpedal or better two. It is a comfort to control Mix (mix between original signal and modulationsignal) and Freq (how fast it swells) with your feets realtime instead of turning the knops with hands while playing. It was indeed very difficult for me to get something at all acceptable out of the 102. I was nearly bringing it back to the store. But I first found out, that the analog chorus sounded much better than my digital Yamaha DGstomp. Then I found out, that Rate and Amount both should be at circa 3.5 and to control the Mix and Freq with expressionpedals. When that happend I found that I'll never get another so good sounding leslie-chorus and I'll never get another analog guitarsynth. Therefor I'm keeping the 102 - and now I don't think I can live without it in my setup.
I was comparing the 102 against the 101, 103 and 105. For guitars, the 102 and 103 are the best choices. The 102 can sound like a analogsynth, it is more difficult with the 103 to get that effect, so I was purchacing the 102 and not the 103-phaser. But latter I'll get that as well.

Very simple and self informative, I never really sat down to read the manual. However, precision is needed in getting a desired sound, because one tiny tweak of the frequency knob can change the sound completely. This means that the sound possibilities are endless, which of course is not a bad thing at all. I normally tune it to whatever key I'm playing on guitar, but it is fun to close your eyes and tweak it randomly to see what you can come up with. If you're a first timer, GET THE EXPRESSION PEDAL(or one for all 4). It doesn't cost much at all. You'll be glad you did, otherwise you'll be having back problems while you tweak away into oblivion. I use it primarily for atmosphere. It can make your guitar sound like it's exterior is rotting away and morphing into a robot.

This pedal turns your guitar signal into a vintage synth patch, no question. Don't waste your money on midi guitar synths with delayed reaction and preset synth sounds(don't forget those pickups). I use it on an old crate halfstack with a Schecter Tempest. I got into the ringmod sound after toying with the one on my Korg D16 recorder. I went out to find a pedal version. I almost lost all hope in ring modulators after buying a discontinued Gonkulator by DOD. I decided to give them a second chance and bought the moogerfooger with no regrets. I returned the Gonkulator. If anyone is familiar with the guitar solo in the nine inch nails song ruiner, that tone can be achieved with this pedal. Another song would be the clean guitar in Lord Only Knows by Beck. I normally use it on clean, but I recommend using the effects loop if distorted. It sounds great either way though. Don't settle for RingMod imitations, they are not ring modulators. They're noise makers.

Never had to deal with them, but as far as the samples on their website goes, they need better ones. The guitarist sucks, and is not using it properly. I told the owner of a guitar store about the pedal(he never even tried it) and he started to bitch about how it's not a real moog pedal. I told him to piss off. My secondary instrument is synthesizers, I know a moog when I hear one.

I look forward to trying the new MoogerFooger Murf. Even if everyone owned one it would still make music authentic, because there is a seperate sound for everybody. It's failrly simple to get a good sound out of it. The only problem is there are so many possibilities. This is definitely not plug and play. But, once you get the sound you want, it's amazing. Just take your time and get to know this pedal. It's one of those tools that you will use for a lifetime.

Here is how I creat sound with my Guitar...1980 Les Paul Custom Silverburst>Boss DD-6 Delay>Digitech Whammy> Electro-Harmonix Stereo Polychorus>Boss BF-3 Flanger>Electro Harmonix Small Stone Phaser>Fulltone Supatrem Tremolo>DOD FX40B E.Q.>Dunlop Crybaby BB-535 Wah>Moogerfooger Lowpass Filter>Moogerfooger Ring Modulator>Moogerfooger 12-Stage Phaser>Boss RV-3 Reverb/Delay>Line 6 DL-4 Delay Modeler>MXR Micro Amp and then I plug it in to a Mesa Boogie Rectifier Recording Pre-Amp which Plug's into a Crown CE1000 Power amp and then into a Mesa Boogie Rectifier 4X12 cabinet. I also use a Boss LS-2 to bypass the Moogerfoogers because their bypass sucks. Moogerfoogers are definitely not true bypass, but they sound great when you turn them on. Just be prepared for the pedal to take over all of your guitar tone.
I use the Ring Mod to go into LSD land. I wanted to get into that Radiohead, Pink Floyd space and the Ring Mod was a great choice. The only other Ring Mod I like was the Lovetone Ringer Stinger, but I'm not going to throw down $600 for an effects pedal. Buy a great sounding amp and anything will sound good through it.

Mine has worked great since day one. The Minimoog's have been around for something like 30 years and they are still running strong. I think the Moogerfoogers will be the same and they will probably be worth a lot of money one day. Looka t what happened to their Analog Delay pedal. When they came out, they were selling for around $400. Now, because they are rare, they are going for around $1000 on ebay. I think I can depend on this pedal for the rest of my life. I would gig without a backup, but you need to take care of your gear. I would never jump on my pedals. We are talking about music. Not wrestling.

I have never dealt with Moog. However, I did have the best customer service of my life at effectsforless.com I called them up and Ryan Nixon answered the phone. It turned out, he was the owner and runs a small business in New Jersey. He is an authorized dealer for Moog products as well as many other Analog devices. He has the lowest prices anywhere. Free 2-3 day priority shipping and no tax as long as you don't live in New Jersey. I paid 219.95 out the door for my Moogerfooger Ring Modulator. 219.95 out the door for my Lowpass Filter, and 279.95 out the door for my Moogerfooger 12-Stage Phaser.
Ryan is a really nice guy to talk to. We talked for about a half an hour about the kind of effects I was looking for and the differences between the Lovetone Pedals, Electro-Harmonix pedals, and Moogerfooger pedals. In the end, I decided on the Foogers. Once again, Ryan is a great guy. It was the best customer service I ever experienced.

I own a small recording studio and this the Moogerfooger Ring Modulator is definitely for me. It's a great effect for any type of situation where you are looking for something different. I just wish it had true bypass, but the Boss LS-2 allows me to do that. Buy this pedal! It's awesome. Bob Moog has done it again. Hey Bob, if you are reading this...MAKE ANOTHER ANALOG DELAY PEDAL! THERE ARE LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF GUITARISTS WHO WANT A REISSUE OF YOUR ANALOG DELAY PEDAL!

it's pretty self-explanatory. if you've ever played any other ring mods you realize that it's not an effect you can use constantly so ease of use is real important. the for knobs and two switches do exactly what they say they do with out much hassle. granted you have to do a little more searching on this ring mod because it lets you controls several parameters that normally aren't controlled on most ring mods. if your no an idiot you should be able to figure this thing our without a manual.

i'm playing it with my 62 jazz bass through an ashdown amb 500 and it sound spectacular. it works well with other effects too. absolutely no noise at all, but then again none of the moogerfooger have problems with noise. the effect can be very over-the-top or extremely subtle, it's your choice. it gets all the classic bell tones as well as some that i;ve never heard. if you want the chick corea tone that he uses on bitches brew it's simple. duplictating sounds is also quite a bit easier than most mods that i've used.

First of all I read all the reviews and one of the first ones, by "bor", really hit the nail on the head. This is extremely easy to get a good sound out of it. It is a quality Moog Product. He intended it to be basically a synth module that could be used as a standard effects pedal or in conjunction with other Moogerfoofer pedals for a more "modular" setup. There are no patches, although this would be nice, because this is a very deep pedal with around 6 separate controls, 4 of which can be controlled with optional control pedal. The manual is handy for basic instruction. I suppose the only thing that would improve it(saveable patches) would drive the price out of range with reality.

The sounds this thing produces are incredible. There is an amount of added noise if the amp has the treble setting up high. This noise is more than compensated for by the great sounds. It really turns your guitar into a synthesizer. You can get great standard ring-mod sounds, bell-like metallic tones and space ship landings, etc. But you can also get a very smooth s-l-o-w tremolo sound, or speed it up to sound more like a standard amplifier tremolo sound, or speed it up even more to where the carrier frequency begins to alter the input(guitar) frequency and it becomes a machinelike buzz. I even got a very cool square-wave-fuzz-box sound a la King Crimson.. The LFO can be entered into the picture for pitch-shifting or totally chaotic sounds. Like I said earlier, this is really a synth module, not an effects pedal. So you may not like the results if you aren't into extreme sound-shaping. I rate it a 9 for the noise but Moogerfoogers are really in a class all their own when it comes to the quality of the effect.

I haven't had a problem with it, although I have never taken it on a gig. If I were to, I would try to place it in a protective efx board and case. That being said the wood sides actually are very sturdy, and I see no reason this thing would ever break down. The switch is very quiet.

Although I read it was hard to use it, I read the manual, which is very clear, and I was able to touch everything knowing what I was doing, so I don't really think it's hard to use. Other thing is to find the right sound for you, maybe it's not that easy, although I found some settings I was very happy with. Only one complain: it's VERY hard to set a specific frequency in the oscillator, cause it's very sensible. For some songs I play it's so frustrating (I can't be doing weird sounds in the middle of a concert trying to find the right frequency) that I'm thinking about finding a digital oscillator (for certain songs) and plug it into the moogerfooger, so I can easily set the freq writing a number. The bad thing is that I didn't find one, if anybody knows about a cheap one, please tell me (it's not necessary a particularly good one, cause it's only a sinusoidal pulse, there's no quality on it)

I'm using it with a PRS Custom 24, a MESA/Boogie Dual Rectifier trem-o-verb and a bunch of other pedals like a Whammy WH-1, a phaser, a delay, wha, etc. Amazing the way you can combine them.
The mooger is not noisy, and you can use it to boost the loss of signal between pedals.

Many knobs and switches (compares to guitar effect that I'm used to). As a regular keyboard accessory perhaps this is typical. It sounds cool, you have the option to choose from a usable effect to something that sounds nothing like a guitar (or whatever you are using it with). The manual is cool, lots of settings and technical talk also.

I use my Gibson ES335 and a 50 watt Holland "lil jimi" amp. It doesn't seem noisy at all and I have a very clean amp, jazzy etc... I like the drive knob, it effects the input level of your instrument, so the guitar signal can be boosted in a preamp kinda way. I like the effect at almost any setting and the effect itself is always strong (not like some electro harmonix crap that looses your signal). I also use this pedal with the Danelectro Back-talk reverse delay (excellent pedal for the money). I have a gig that I recorded with some ring modulator use, I can probably transfer it via windows messenger if anyone wants to hear it in action.

I've been playing about 11 years, I play free jazz/groove/indie/avant guarde whatever. Late 60s Miles Davis sounding stuff usually. You can hear some ring modulator on some Miles recordings- On The Corner, Live at the Fillmore etc... It has a nice Jeff Parker sound (Tortoise, Isotope 217, Chicago Underground Quartet, Tricolor). Basically this is a very cool and unique pedal, it can really freak your audience out and keep them guessing too. If I were you I would go purchase this pedal now! Then later get the Moogerfooger low pass filter and 12 stage Phaser. Later.

Well, that depends on your definition of "good". It's very easy to plug straight into this thing, twist the knobs, flip the switches, and make some space-fried noise. I consider that sort of noise to be cool and usable with my music, so I would say that it's easy to use in that sense. But if you want to really learn what each knob and switch does and learn how to fine tweak your sounds and find more-or-less musical timbres to work with, it takes a little time and experimentation and a good readthrough of the manual, which reads like a high school physics lesson (in other words, very informative).

I use this at the end of an effects chain that goes like this: Boss Digital Reverb/Delay ---> a couple of Line 6 Delay Modelers ---> Line 6 Modulation Modeler ---> Boss Phase Shifer ---> Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress ---> the Moogerfooger Ring Mod. My guitars are a Rickebacker 330 (6 string) and a U.S. Fender Tele. My amp is a Fender Twin Amp Pro-Tube Series. This unit is noiseless as far as I can tell and has its own volume knob. As far as the sound quality itself, I'll just say that this is the pedal that made me decide never to buy digital effects again. There is nothing that tops the seamless warmth of genuine analog effects and this unit is a perfect of example of that. I have a digital ring mod and it's an unusable joke compared to the Moogerfooger. This thing makes sounds that literally made my mouth hang open in dumbfounded amazement, as cheesy as that sounds. I've had it for about 2 and a half months now and I still don't think I've come anywhere near to finding out all the different tones, noises, and textures that it can generate.

It's quite solidly constructed. I think the other reviewers who have questioned it's durability really don't have a reason to do so. It's not as rugged as, say, a Boss pedal, but it should hold up just fine with proper care. Just don't set it on fire, jump on it, or throw it out your car while speeding down the freeway and it should last a long long time.

I play spacey, dreamy, sorta psychedelic, sometimes jazz-esque, sometimes countrified rock and roll. This pedal is perfect and versatile, versatile, versatile. You can get sounds as subtle as a simple throbbing arhythmic tremolo (a tremolo that follows an odd rhythm) all the way to the most gloriously atonal noises that somehow make it sound as if you're playing differential equations with your guitar. And, of course, you can get every type of sound in between. You can also hook up to 4 expression (sold separately, unfortunately) pedals up to the Moogerfooger in order to control the 4 knobs with your feet in real time as you play. I haven't even figured out how to use the carrier-oscillator jack for inputing frequencies from different instruments and sound sources. In short, this is an amazing little box that's well worth the fairly steep price tag. The sounds are so fluid and analog even at the most fried out settings. This may be the single coolest pedal I've ever bought.

One thing that no one has mentioned here is that these big briar boxes change the guitar signal to a line-level signal. To me, this is a positive, as having it first reduces the signal degredation I get running my guitar signal through my pedal chain. To some purists, this may not be a good thing, but for me, it makes me happy.

Manual is informative, If you like to hone in on particular sounds, this is a lot of fun. This sound is like no other effect. If you want to completely transform your instrument be it guitars, keyboards or my favorite circuit bent devices like speak and spells, this is it. I play a lot of experimental stuff, I'm a huge fan of Sonic Youth, Residents, and Fred Frith so this fits in perfect with it all. If you work with a lot of filter stomp boxes i.e. phasers, flangers etc. they work extremely well when placed before the modulator, transforming the ring mod even more. On the other side, if you switch it to the low modulator setting, it does a real nice vintage tremelo sound. It's completley analog so its quality is warm and true.

I play strictly studio stuff, so for me it's durability is fine. I would question it's reliability in a live performance situation, it's not a RAT or MXR, it's got finished wood on the sides, and seeing the price I paid for it, I would treasure this thing.

It has a carrier in jack so you can send in any electronic device keyboard, speak and spells etc. and it will make your instrument such as a a guitar, sound like that carrier in signal, depending on how much mix you add. It's analog, what more can you say for that true warm sound. I have been experimenting with stuff for ten years now and this thing has definately become a staple in my sound. It has the added benefit of expression pedal jacks, one each for the mix, freq, rate, and amount. This will give you hands free dialing, but because the pedals cost $45 each, I have been hesitiant to purchase them all, maybe one for the Freq. and Rate would be helpful. I give it a nine only because the pedal option is way too expensive.

From subtle colorations to whacked-out sci-fi sound effects I haven't found an unusable setting yet. In addition to ring modulation the unit's LFO controls produce an astonishing variety of tremolo effects. The carrier output is an extremely hot signal which I route to a bass amp. By twisting the frequency knob (or using the optional expression pedal) I can get a huge range of very convincing theremin tones. Add a dash of modulation for the ultimate in B grade horror movie ambience. Tuning the frequency's fundamental tone to, say, my Telecaster's low E string effectively 'tunes' the ring modulation to the that key, producing a more musical, less chaotic sound...

If you think of it as a stomp box, then I guess its pretty darn complicated. Its much more than a stomp box, and you can easily spend vast amounts of time playing around with this thing.
As others have noted, you can plug in up to four expression pedals. I've been using only one, to control the mix, which allows me to bring the effect in and out with my foot while the hands are busy. I could easily see incorporating more foot pedals, but I already have 2 other foot pedals in use besides this one and at some point it gets a little ridiculous especially for a live gig.
Unlike most stomp boxes, this really takes some effort to learn but that's good because that means its deep and allows for personal expression and that means its really a musical instrument.

I'm using this with my Fender Rhodes piano. Rhodes through a ring modulator is a great, some would say classic, sound. Sometimes I'll use it to bring in a little edge to an otherwise clean sound. Other times I leave the clean sound completely behind and just go way out there. I'm having a blast with it. I don't know about using this for guitars. Its not what I think of as a standard guitar effect. A guitar playing friend of mine has incorporated this into his rig and uses it extensively, but then, he plays some weird (and great) shit.
This is an amazing box but in my opinion, unless you're making truly alternative (and I don't mean modern rock) music, you probably aren't going to use it much and therefore probably won't want to lay down $300 and then deal with setting it up, etc. . . on a regular basis. But if you know what a ring mod does and are sure you'll really use it and want the best you can find, this is it.
I find this pedal is not too noisy, at least, not any more than I expected. A friend (different one) has the Moogerfooger lowpass filter and it sometimes picks up radio transmissions, which is needless to say not desirable. There's probably an engineering explanation for that but I'm not aware of it. Anyway, the ring mod is not the quietest of pedals but its manageable.

I'm assuming its as fragile as it seems. This is not an effect you throw into a cloth bag along with your Boss and Ibanez pedals. This you keep in its box or some other well-paded enclosure that keeps it from harm from those more rough and ready items bouncing around in your gig bag. Haven't had it long enough to judge reliability but I hope it is because I plan to be using it alot for a long time.

I'll give it a 10 because its clearly the kind of ring modulators. Again, before you run out and get this just 'cause its the latest cool toy from Bob Moog, I think it pays to think about how much you'll really use it. Most styles of music just don't lend themselves to extensive use of a ring modulator. But if you know a ring mod is for you, and if are currently using something else and want to step up to a higher level of authenticity and expression, go for it!

You can create very un-usable sounds very easily without the manual.

The sound quality of the unit itself is excellent, provided that the level adjustment is correct.
I believe the unit impacts the overall guitar signal when bypassed, and I put it in a hard-bypass loop to overcome this.
I use this with either a AmStd Strat or a Suhr Classic, into various old Fender amps.

You could run a truck over some effects units and not hurt them. This isn't one of those units, though--it seems somewhat fragile. I haven't personally had a reliability problem with it, but when I move it around I cover it with layers of that jumbo bubble wrap even though I keep it board-mounted and in a padded pedalboard bag.
If I gave it the same treatment I give my wah-wah, I have little doubt that knobs would break etc.
Plus, I am always skeptical of the reliability of units that use wall warts. Power feed cable from the transformer are notorious for breaking down under regular gig use. There's a way around this (below).

Customer support is polite, professional, and reasonably well-informed. I wanted to run the unit off a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power, and they didn't get me all the way there. If you want to do this, you can--just have a positive-tip plug made ($10 each from Voodoo Lab, and their turnaround is excellent). Works great, even though the stated mA requirements for the unit are higher than the Pedal Power output. I tested it to death, though, and it really does work great this way.

I would not replace it if lost or stolen. I find it's best use is for contrast at the end of a long (16+ bar) solo--and, then, only once or twice times a night. Late in the set, too, so it's use for contrast is more effective.
I think it'd be more useful to me if it had a mix control, or if I could put it in a parallel effects loop. I'd mix it way down to just give a surreal edge to some lines. In series, for me, it's just way too "in your face" for both the rest of the band and our audiences.
If I was playing a different style of music, it might be different.

Unless you already know how these things work, you will need the manual. Fortunately, the manual is VERY well written--just the right level of engineer-speak.
After you read the manual, the entire unit makes sense. I rated it an 8--it is a unit you will need to understand to get the most out of.

I used this with a '76 Boogie, a '68 BFDR, and a couple of old Twin Reverbs. A Suhr Classic and an American Standard Strat w/Suhr V60 pickups.
Half the point of this unit is to wake everybody--including you--up. There are a variety of obscene sounds it will make. I find it best to use it for a short intervals (4-8 bars, max), just for contrast.
If you don't set the input level correctly, this thing will color your sound even when you've got it bypassed.

A friend of mine took his on a short tour, and it didn't hold up very well. He's had to have it serviced.
My own impression of it is that you're best off putting it in a pedalboard that sits in a rack case, and running expression pedal(s) to a floorboard. I wouldn't mount it directly on a pedalboard.
If it was a big part of my sound, I'd want a backup.

I called them up to find out how to power it off a power supply. They did explain the polarity of the plug, but the person I talked to turned out to be wrong about the amperage requirements.
Still, they were polite and professional. That counts, too.

You can power these with a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power if you have a positive-tip cable (Voodoo Lab custom makes them--FAST--for about $10 a shot). This is great, because the wall-wart sucks for live use.
I really can't use this thing enough to justify its space in my setup--any longer than four bars, and the rest of the band starts looking at me funny. Longer than eight bars, and the sax player starts making rude body noises with his sax. I get the point, and then leave it off for the rest of the night.
For me, it's most useful for use in studio recordings, etc. and for very short intervals live. I like ending one long solo a night with it, for example. It's a very versatile effect; you can make a lot of very strange sounds with it.
It's pretty expensive--I can't call it a "value" per se.

there are five knobs, two switches, three LEDs (one of them tri-colored), and a whopping nine 1/4" jacks on the back. I suppose to the uninitiated this might be a bit intimidating at first. then again-- a) the manual is very good about explaining basic tenets of ring modulation and the functions of the various knobs/jacks; b) the uninitiated ain't gonna shell out nearly $300 for one of these things. "audio out" shoulda been labeled "mix out"-- that's the only things that kept me from making cop-attracting noises within two seconds of opening the box (given that the input is "audio in," don't "audio out" sound like a bypass out to you?). but now we're all squared away, and everything else seems fairly self-explanatory.

oh... my... god.
as a guitarist, I purchased an EH Frequency Analyzer RI, hoping that i could live without the flexibility that this thing offers. that was a silly move. the FA sounds really good-- but it isn't the Moogerfooger. not by a long shot.
the LFO alone is worth the extra hundred bucks... not to mention the available real-time control of ALL knobs via expression pedal, or the ability to drive with a carrier OUTSIDE the box, or the ridiculous carrier frequency range on tap. the MF is one of the most expensive ring mods on the market-- but the additional flexibility that it offers means that it has a MUCH better chance of escaping dust collection or outright sale when you get bored with the same old sounds. I was unsure of whether my purchase was worthwhile-- but then I plugged it in.
this is not a box for the mildhearted. the joyous squeals it emits as the carrier passes the 1k-3k range can wreak untold destruction on eardrums, amplifiers, friendships with neighbors, puppies, marriages... if you're not really into pain, though, you can go to the opposite extreme, set the carrier to limbo-low and get one of the weirdest Leslie imitations on earth. (try pulling that off with your DOD Gonkulator.) and then try every frequency in between that the MF has to offer. gobs o' timbres.
now add the LFO and its uber-SDD3000-like abilities to make your instrument sound like a swirling, resonant mass of indefinite pitch, or-- my favorite-- the straight-up-and-down pitch shifting of the square wave. plug a footcontroller into the carrier frequency jack, and you'll have the audience thinking you've somehow modded a Crybaby to make *them* cry (for mercy, of course). the LFO speed application for this pedal is equally cool and useful, if a bit more tame and conservative than randomly whipping out frequencies that could shatter glass houses.
but, uh, is it any good for making actual music? well, hell yeah. and unlike other, lesser ring mods i've checked out, i can actually see USING this on more than one track on an album. hell, i could probably use it on ALL of them. disclaimer: you may not be as strange as I am.
one big drawback: no true bypass. doesn't suck tone noticeably, though.

the box itself seems sturdy as hell. I'm not crazy about the wood panels because they're too good an indicator of road usage (when you spend this much for an esoteric box, you'd like to be able to keep it in mint shape in case you get in financial difficulties and have to resell it, ya know). but I'm sure the thing as a whole will hold up real well.
I have big bitches about the wall wart (for obvious reasons), and also about the sold-separately EP-1 foot controller, which looks and handles like it was made in Ethiopia for Rolls' "import line." doesn't feel terrible on the foot, though.

thinking about it? if you're an incorrigible lover of truly weird sounds, trust me: even though it hurts, this is worth the investment. you'll get plenty of mileage out of this.
however-- if you're only a casual, one-solo-a-night-with-blend-at-75%-clean ring mod person, you would no doubt do well to save your pennies for something else. but i'm sure you've already figured that out. (as a side note, the ring mod in the korg AX1G is passable-- and it also has footpedal control of the carrier frequency.)

This unit is very easy to use. Four knobs for editing, and an additional knob for input (drive). Four CV pedal inputs for controlling the knob movements with your feet. Manual is short, but concise.

I have a Roland MC-303 that I run into the Ring Modulator then into the Big Briar Lowpass Filter. I use the LFO out on the Ring Modulator to modulate the cutoff on the Lowpass Filter to get the craziest sounds! My MC-303 never sounded better! Even with the MC-303 turned off, I can crank the LFO and the ressonance till they self oscilate and make those classic sounds similar to the Korg MS-20, all with no input running through them!! In addition to all of that, you can run your own signals into it and modulate them with something else via the carrier input. Very modular in nature, very cool!

These units are very stable. They are enclosed in a metal housing with classic wooden sides on them. I would have no problem giging with them without a backup.

I have been playing keyboards for several years and I am very critical with all of my gear and these stomp boxes do not dissapoint. How could they being made by Bob Moog himself? I would suggest getting both the Ring Modulator and the Lowpass filter so you can add the LFO effect to the filer. If you want crazy sounds and a modular approach to stomp pedals, this is it!
