I bought this Classic Wah used on E-Bay so it came without an instruction manual. No Problems Here - after all it is a Wah Pedal.

I use both a handmade Telecaster with Dimarzio Twang Kings and an Epi Les Paul with Rockfield Vintage HB's.
Right now I run both a Randall RG75G3 112 Combo and a Crate V30 Head with a 212 Tone Tubby Half Cab.
I use this wah at the front of my chain because I also use an MXR 10 Band EQ and a Smart Gate at the end (to dial in the tone before it hits the amp).
I picked up this pedal based primarily on the post made by Bill Wenzloff of Morley Pedals (not to mention the great price). When I got the pedal I found that the sweep was very extreme and a very unnatural sweep - it was all or nothing. Toe up was very trebley and had a noticeble hiss. Toe down was completely flat like having the master tone turned down to nothing.
Following the advice from a previous poster and after contact Bill Wenzeloff I made the recommended advustments to the LED and Sensor. This adjustment was very easy to make and had a substantial affect on the sweep.
I have never used a traditional Cry Baby so I have very little experience here, however, I have transformed this pedal into something that sounds more natural and not so harsh and extreme.
This will likely not be my last Wah pedal, but for now I have something that was inexpensive, sounds pretty good, and will afford me some experience until I can figure out what sound I 'm after in a Wah.

When making the adjustments to the pedal sweep, I saw that this pedal was made in 2002. I'm not the original owner so I can't comment on how the previous owner used it. I did observed that the fram is solid steel of a suprisingly thick guage. I'm a big guy and have punished this pedal and have found no problems with it. Considering that it is 6 yrs old and still takes abuse, I'd say its reliable. Also, no potentiometer to fail.

Excellent. Probably one of the best. As indicated above, I got this pedal used and it was likely way over warranty. Before I got the pedal, I contacted Morley (Wenzeloff) and requested the instruction guide and the documents relating to the sweep adjustment. I explained to Wenzeloff that I was not the original owner. Morley was quick to send the pdf docemts via e-mail. I still had a few questions and called Morley. Within a few hours, I got a call from one of their techs that walked me through the entire procedure while I was on the phone. No that is what I call customer service!

Overall I appreciate the tones that I get from this pedal, it is not true by-pass and will invariabley alter my tone to some degree. The pedal had an extreme sweep at first but that was quickly and easily remedied While I wouldn't consider this product to be anywhere near professional calibre it suits my needs for now. I suspect that if I upgrade at a later date it would be to something like a BBE Wah. Who knows, maybe this wil be the last Wah I buy? Time will tell?
At the end of the day, I would recommend this Wah (with sweep modification)to anyone looking for an alternative to a CryBaby.

Want to share this with anyone owning a Morley Classic Wah. I bought one awhile back, got it home and it was the usual problem with these wahs - it didn't have a full, robust sweep. When the pedal was backed all the way up, it went from dark bassy sound, and then with just a slight movement downward, opened up into almost full treble. There was no mids, or a smooth opening of the tone from bass to treble. Well, I shelved it for almost a year without touching it. I've always loved the sound of a Crybaby, but became disgusted with buying new ones and within a short time they become practically unusable because of all the crackle and static that builds up in the pots.
So one day, I decided to see if anyone had posted anything re these wah pedals. I searched the web and found a site where someone from Morley had said all you need to do is bend the sensor light inside the wah, a tiny bit forward, or backward to change the sweeping sound. I did so and the pedal became fully usable, with deep throaty bass, opening accurately across the bass-to-mid-to-treb tone spectrum to fully stinging treble.
I'm very happy with it now, it has a full sweep in tone, responding to my foot's touch as it should. And best of all it doesn't have those stinking pots that ruins every Crybaby pedal! This Morley is 100% quiet, live or in studio and all it took was a tiny adjustment.
So, you may want to give this a try: I'm not a tech, or technically oriented, but here's all I did, per the instructions I found:
1) Stating the obvious - take the bottom plate off the Morley Classic wah and locate the optic sensor light. It should be adjacent a semi-circular ply-board (cardboard?) looking thing with holes of various shapes. When the pedal is moved, the ply-board semi-rotates, and the holes on the ply-board go up and down with the light passing thru, (changing the tone, I presume).
2) Make sure your wah has power (battery/wall-wart, etc.) Plug your guitar into wah; wah into amp (set at moderately low volume, unless you want to do wah-testing at screaming volumes, Einstein). The easiest way is to set everything up so that you're sitting down holding your guitar with the wah on a table in front of you. This way you can rock the pedal with your hand, turn the wah over to adjust the light, then turn it back to an upright position to test it. Hit strings or chord, rocking the wah full sweep - note the sound (probably goes from bass to full treble with a slight pedal movement, if it's like most Morley wahs).
3) Now, very gently - GENTLY for all you clumsy oafs that fat finger and tear up everything you touch (yes, I've seen your HC reviews: "Boo-hoo, the switch on my new gizmo only lasted 20 minutes after I bought it - can't understand why. I only stomped down on it with MY FULL WEIGHT!" But I digress) : |
Now - GENTLY bend the light ever so slightly toward the ply-board w/holes. Hit strings or chord on guitar, and rock the pedal again full sweep. See if the sound changed and the sweep is more accurate...that is, if the tone changes across the sweep with the pedal as it's moved. You should hear SOME difference.
4) Keep making tiny, tiny adjustments, i.e., tiny little bends to the light, testing the wah each and every time. I did this only a few times before I had the wah responding as well as any Crybaby I've owned. As I recall, I bent the light inward toward the ply-board with holes, and it started producing a full tone sweep, responding accurately to the pedal movement.
So - hope this helps. The potential is there in the Morley, and having the quiet optic sensor beats a noisy pot anyday. But, can't guarantee everyone will get the same results. I'm just glad I tried it and got it to work, and I don't have to look for another wah.
Happy modding, friends.

First off...it's a wah. How many songs a night are you really going to waaaaaa-waaaaaa-waaaaaa on the friggin' thing?!? I'm playing in a cover band and unless we put a song in the set that actually has wah, the thing is never used. So I really don't see it being worn out or anything. Should last a looooonnnnnggggg time, man.
And NOTE: Unless you're Jimi Hendrix, who pretty much explored just about EVERYTHING worth hearing/doing/saying with a wah pedal in his short 2-year public career, YOU should put it away also, except for an occasional wank now and then. Ain't nuthin' more boring than some guitarist noodlin' endlessly while waaaaaaa-in' away on a freakin' wah pedal. I'd rather hear the drone of a refrigerator motor - more musical.

This is pretty dodgy. It sucks your tone in a horrible way, just dulls it out real bad. The difference between the uppermost position and the point where the wah engages is huge on mine, and with a clean sound I just can't use it because I can't leave it in the uppermost position for later engaging, and trying to leave it just engaged and htne returning it to that position is just too hard. It can get some cool noises when there is a lot of gain coming through your amp, and I found it nice for punctuating lead but not such a great replica of classic wah sounds

Manipulation of the wah effect is easy to use, hard to master. This Morley is no different, your foot needs to express how/where you want the wah's to swell. On/off switch easy enough to engage/disengage.
Sound Quality
:
7
Lets look at the Pro's first; little or no signal degradation when effect is engaged, welcome absence of 'scratchy' effect that dirty/worn potentiometers are so prone to (this uses electro-optical circuitry), decent 'throw' from heel to toe. So very useable.
However, as Morleys Budget Wah model, we have some pronounced cons here; At full Heel (or Bass) mode, there is a noticeable volume loss, undesireable when soloing. Also, and more importantly, a true pro wah should have a continuous progression of tone modulation as your foot moves through, like a continuous 'curve of tone'. This feels more like hitting 3 or 4 'bumps' as you heel-to-toe,with the main prouncement kicking in all too suddenly (for my taste) in the mid position, so the wah is more abrupt. Some people like this, I feel this factor is what separates average/decent units from a really top pedal. However, remebering price to performance ratio, it 's giggable, quiet and performs quite well. Overall, the wah strength itself is reasonably prounounced.

In summation, most semi-pro or intermediate players could use this. It's well-priced, quiet and dependable, and performs reasonably well.
However, someone who lives by the Wah, or any top pro looking to make a purchase should be aware of the volume loss on Bass position and the fact that it is an abrupt sounding wah without that 'total' wah control that many players crave. Good value for money.

I tried several guitars to determine sound the sound quality rating. A 1985 Made in Japan strat with 3 single coils. A single p/u Phat Cat Strat. A Santana SE II. All had different sounds as one would expect. I ran the pedal through a Pathfinder 10, Gibson goldtone GA5 and a Roland cube 30. There were as many different results as there were adjustments to those amps. The distortion on the Pathfinder did not sound as good as the Gibson, the Roland did excellent. The point Im trying to make is the Wah pedal sounded as good as any other, Crybaby, Hendrix.......to me. I guess all this is really subjective. I sent an email to Bill at Morley. He answered right away with a PDF document indicating how simple it was to adjust the wah to exactly how I wanted it to sound. Now that's what it's all about. There is a lot of variance in sound/sweep and tone adjustments by simply bending the LED to apply light to the sensor. I found a sweet spot for me, put the screws back in and now I have the wah pedal I was looking for. It is soooo too simple.

I'm one of those guys that will go to a restaurant, get a bad meal and not complain about it. I just won't go back. What good does it do to complain, nothing will likely happen. Now when I send an email to a company about 50% of the time I can expect to get a late answer, lots of the time, I get no answer at all. Thechnical support at Musicians Friend for example, twice I emailed, finally I gave up, I just determined I'm not going to waste my time. I sent an email to Bill Wenzloff at Morley and got a prompt, concise answer that took care of my problems right away. That being said, Morley just gained a customer...Customer service is what it is all about. Customer service these days is taking a back seat to sales in most cases, NOT SO WITH MORLEY.

OK I got this wah 2 an half years ago , as a backup to my dying crybaby, I really did not like the sound and figured it was do to the Electro-Optical sencor circuit, well I was right .I lent it to my girlfriends newfew ,and when my crybabys PC board died I was wahless for a while. He never used the wah ,so I took it back, but still found it to be week sounding. I got a crybaby ,and was gonna ebay the CLW till I sent Bill Wenzloff at Morley an e-mail ,he sent me a great PDF doc showing differnt mods you can make to various Morley wahs. I was able to adjust the LED and sencor inside the unit ,and get a very good crybaby sound. The wah does sound less "whoosh" then a wah with a pod(Crybaby Dunlop, and Vox type) but you don't get any click when you ingage the switch.I A&B ed it next to a crybaby ,and played "Dazed and Confused " by Led Zeppelin and I got just as good sound from the CLW wah as I did with the Dunlope Crybaby.I use a Marshall JMC Lead 50 watt, Bad Monkey OD ,Big Muff,Dyna Comp ,Phase 90 , Dano BLT echo, and a Rocktron Short Timer Delay. You can get good wah tones with this, and if you have any probs e-mail Bill at demodude@hotmail.com,he'll help you with any questions.

Pretty simple to be pair. Press the switch to turn it on! This can be a bit annoying actyually because you need to stamp on the switch and then do your wah thing. It gets pretty tricky to get the desired wah effect from this thing as you have to use certain areas of the frequency sweep for different areas on the neck! For example if you were using the lower strings with more bass you would need to use the wah in the open position as it does nothing in the closed.
Sound Quality
:

Very poor! With clean sounds its ok. A bit harsh in the trebbles but ok. The sweep is so dramatic from the bass frequencies that it can be used as a substitute for a volume pedal! Used like this it gives some nice Incubus esque phaser/volume swell effect which is nice. Whack on sum beef however and the whole thing goes to pot. The wah just doesnt work like this. It is indistinct and doesnt produce the wah effect. Just a sudden two-step change in tone. With lower gain settings it works marginally better but nothing special.

I don't think this pedal really works for me at the moment so I plan on selling it to get a ZVEX Wah Probe or a Budda. I have been playing for 2 and a bit years now and use a fender USA standard strat and an Ibanez RG series guitars going into a Line 6 Flextone 3. I would not recomend you buy this pedal!!!! Go for a second hand cry baby of the likes but stay away from this thing.

It didn't take 30 minutes to figure this wah was not for me. I prefer the traditional wah-wah sound - a 70's love Boat sound, if you will. The Morley CLW didn't have it.
Additionally, the pedal rocker is not smooth and the pedal felt as if it jerked minutely into position. Also, the range of tone was very slight troughout the pedal's entire travel span.
I took it back the same day and exchanged it even up for Dunlp CrtyBaby, which had exactly the sound I was after.

In terms of this units ability to plug in a play, it's very easy. There's a socket on one side for your input cable and one on the other for your output.
It runs of the standard 9v battery or adapter. I never had to change my 9v battery in the 6/8 months I had this wah, by sticking to the instructions in the manual to unplug the input cord when not in use.
The use of a photo resistor in place of a standard potentiometer meant that the wah will probably still sound and function just as well new as after many years of use, as is the case with many of the older Morley Wah's.
I did not like the on/off switch being on the side of the wah. It was hard to switch whilst wearing shoes(!) and this meant that I left in on all the time which I was using it.

I bought this pedal for use with an Ibanez Sr405 5 string played through some awful 30watt Watson (urrgh) but I did try it through a Gallien Krueger 700RB 2x10 combo (thanks Louis!).
The one truely annoying thing that I found about this pedal was that when it was on, but not in use, it destroyed my tone!! This coupled with the fact that it had to be left on all the time meant that I was unable to play with my desired sound!!
It also seemed to do most of its nice sounding wah within the first inch of its sweep, after that it just sounded awful and raspy.
This pedal was nice to use with a Big Muff Pi (USA) and an MXR Phase 100. When all in use at the same time you could get some interesting and fun sounds. But it sounded awfull when used on its own, unlike the Cry Baby's or other cheap Dunlop pedals. Try using this for playing "Coffee Shop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers to really see how inferior this pedal is when played on its own.
I hoped, when I purchased the pedal, that I would be getting a wah that sounded something like that of Cliff Burton. I though that the classic Morley sound would be something similar to what he was using (Morley PWB) but it wasn't. Admittedly playing "For Whom The Bell Tolls" with one of these does sound better than when using a Cry Baby.
Reliability
:

Very reliable due to the use of the photo resistor. I imagine this pedal will still be working in 30 years time if its looked after.
Casing is probably bullet proof and could probably survive being on the road.
AS I said earlier, I managed to get a good 6/8 months out of the battery, so it doesn't eat up too much battery. Never tried it with an adapter.

Its not that bad a pedal. It is a good introduction to the morley sound, so if you didn't know what sound you were looking for in a wah wah pedal it would be recomended that you give it a go in the shop. At #60, it may be cheap, but thats not worth spending on a pedal that is not Morley's finest piece of work.
Yes it is built like a tank and will give you a lifetime of trouble free "wahing" but aren't most pedal built like tanks and most will give you a lifetime of use?
I sold mine and bought a Morley PWB from eBay. I sold it for what I feel they should be worth - #20.

Hard to get a good sound at first. The unit has an anemic sound with a nearly unusable sweep, more like a tone switch than a filter sweep. I opened the unit and foind that the sweep is accomplished by shining an LED through a shaped hole in a little card that moves back and forth with the pedal motion. The hole looked like a box with a little tail on it. This sudden change in the hole shape accounts for the switch as opposed sweep sound. I used tape to even out the shape and the unit now sweeps much more smoothly. Moving the LED closer or farther from the card changes the overall tone, closer for more trebly and further for more basy. For some reason the mod also cured the anemic sound. The wah effect is now more pronounced, almost like a crybaby.

I use a '74 Strat Hardtail through a Boss SD-1 overdrive into a Peavey Classic 20 amp using various speaker cabinets. The Morely Classic Wah dosen't sound overly noisy. The effect was weak (too weak) before I messed with it; now it's fine. It does not have the "scratchiness" of wah's that use pots, which may sometimes be a downside since that tone is so endemic to classic rock and roll.

I play rock, blues and attempt a little jazz. Been plying 35 years. I'd probably go wth a Dunlop or more "traditional" wah were I to do it again, because the sound is known, even with the attendant problems. There are a gazzillion mods available in the internet for traditional wahs, but nothing for the optical sensor units like Morely. Still, for someone who wants a less scratchy tone and is willing to mess around a little, this unit will work fine. They're pretty cheap on ebay.

A wah is a wah is a wah unless there is something wrong with it.
This thing does the job with no problems.
I don't buy wha's for their sound.
I buy them because they wah.
I use it through a tube Marshall stack or a Class A stereo Kendrick 15 watter.
You want raunchy just throw a tubescreamer in front of it.
Can do funk too.

Been playing close to 40 years.
Had lots of wah's.
They are all the same.
They wah.
Some are made better than others.
Some have effects added.
This is just a simple wah that does what it is supposed to do.
Not much to share on this.
If you want a wah that works well, holds up well and is simple.
This is a good one.

I have a Yamaha Pac112eg SE==>classic wah==>DOD Octoplus==>DOD Extreme dist. (very shitty)==>Boss RV-3 delay==>Danelectro fish and ships==> Peavey Bandit 112.
its a bit noisy in the upper position, the effect is weak when the DOD Dist. is on, but it comes to life when the amp is dirty(The amp is a bit noisy when dirt) you can hardly get some artist wah sounds, its better with an Overdriven amp...i've never tried with a different dist or overdrive.

The power button is extremely close and on the right side of the footpedal. It's easy to miss the button. However, the pedal is simple to use. Press the button to turn the wah on and off.

Compared to a Crybaby, the most used wah, this wah's sound is horrible. You can hardly hear the oscillator sweep at all, especially with distortion. It is more of a high-pass filter than anything. The only good thing I've found it useful for so far is a good phone effect (which is barely past the bottom of the sweep), and a whistling wind sound (unplugged guitar, sweeping wah and Tubescreamer on).
My wah also has an anomoly with it that further turned me off. While going very slowly to the top of the sweep with distortion on, I noticed that about 85% is the max of the oscillator, and then the oscillator goes down as I continue to press the pedal forward. I don't know if that is a glitch or how the pedal was designed, but it sounded bad. (This was easily remedied by Legos and yellow tacky stuff, however.)
I don't think it is my setup influencing this. (I have a Kramer strat copy; then to the Morley CLW, Ibanez Tubescreamer TS-5, Danelectro vibrato, DOD chorus, Digitech Delay; then to a Kustom III Lead SC, which the head is connected to a Dunlop Talkbox, then to a Crate KBA 150.) I've also tested this on a friend's setup (Ibanez GAX-70 to the CLW, then to a Danelectro Daddy-O, Digitech RP-100, then to a Peavey Mark III head to a Behringer half-stack), and the result was the same. *shrug*

I've been playing rock for three years, and have been listening to it for 16 years. I wanted to get that great distortion-with-wah-sweep and the shredder's wah-with-tapping sound as well as a 70's-funk/porn sound on clean. With the CLW, none of these are possible. I highly recommend that you buy a Dunlop Crybaby or a Vox Wah. If you like Morley, you might want to check out the Mark Tremonti Power Wah, for it sounds exactly like a Crybaby.

Easy enough to use - some don't like the button on the side but I like it better than the Crybaby style on/off switch - Crybaby style pedal is more convenient but I hated replacing the fuzzy pads once they wore out. Bought used - no manual came with it.

Sound was what I expected - more hi-tech, smooth and a little more subtle than my long-gone Crybaby's. I miss the raunchier upper end of the Crybaby's - but again - I'm sick of cheap pots, felt pads, etc... I don't think the Classic wah has true bypass (I think the PWO does) but it affects my sound very little when off. My only complaint is the lack of the "scratchy" high end and low volume at lower end. I'll need to figure out how to make adjustments...

The on/off switch is on the side of the pedal, not in the extreme forward position of the pedal. This isn't ideal for performing. Also, the on/off switch is too close to the pedal. It is easy to miss with my big clumsy feet.
The sweet spot in the pedal's motion (where the wah effect was noticable) was only about 15% of the overall throw of the pedal. Or so it felt. It seemed like I was moving my foot in a very specific spot to get the wah effect. Since feet and legs are much better at gross movement than precise movement, the pedal is not so easy to use.

The Morley Classic Wah disappointed me. I bought it to replace my Dunlop Crybaby Wah, which had developed a very scratchy pot and was otherwise becoming noisier.
What was disappointing about the Morley was that the wah effect wasn't half as intense as I hoped. Pretty anemic, actually.
I ended up with a Boss PW-10 V-Wah. It was twice the money, but everything I expected was there. (Plus a bunch of stuff I'll never need.)

This was the reason I originally chose the Morley. It looks like it would survive a tank rolling over it. The optical sensor is what I really was after, though. No more scratching, ever! Between the rugged design and optical sensor, I figured this would be the last wah I would ever need.
I returned it the same day, though. The sound quality vetoed all.

Not as easy as other Morley wahs (specificly the Bad Horsies). In fact, it's not even as easy as a standard dunlop style wah. You have to turn the pedal on by clicking a switch NEXT to the rocker. It's not like a small child wouldn't understand the concept behind it's opperation, but you need some fast acurate footwork to use this one without missing a beat. Unfortunately, this wah lacks in this category compared to the other switchless Morley designs.

Sounds really good! Not too harsh on the high end like the Bad Horsies can be. Also, like the other Morley wahs, it doesn't affect my sound when it's off. It's got more of a "traditional" wah sound, so it's more my style. This pedal shows that non-potted wahs have a lot of potential for achieving more "authentic" potted wah sounds.

I bought it strictly for studio use since I'm not into the mechanical on/off switch in a live setting (I'll keep my Bad Horsies for the shows). I figured $60 is a good price for a pedal you aren't going to use all of the time, so why not? I like the way it sounds over the Bad Horsies (although the Bad Horsie 2 comes close). If Morley would release a switchless on/off version of this one I would definately make it my main wah in every application. Until then, it's just another useful tool in the toy box.

Sounds great clean, with distortion, not as much of a wah as I wanted, but I love this pedal anyway. Alot of people put this wah wah pedal down, but I like it. I play rock and this pedal suits me. I've been playing about 2 years now. If it were lost or stolen I'd have to whoop out the one legged space chickens on somebody's @$$, or I could just bust out the TWO YEAR WARRANTY. If I didnt' have a two year warranty on this pedal, I'd buy it again, either that or the Morley Pro series Wah/Volume pedal. I wouldn't buy any other wah companies pedal because Morley has electro-optical control, in other words, no replacing anything. I might consider a VOX though. I was thinking of getting that crappy Rogue Wah/volume pedal for $40, but that would have been a waste of money. After all, Fender makes Squire, and Squire makes Rogue. It's the generic brand of a generic brand man. It's a very inspirational pedal, it's fun to play with too. Definitely worth the 59.99 from Musicians Friend. They're really cool over there. I definitely recomend this pedal. It might not be for everybody, but definitely for my style of playing.

I use a les paul through a thirty watt amp, With an ibanez tubescreamer and marshall chorus. When the pedal is placed before the distortion the hissing noise produced became really loud like a constant shhhhh that was louder than the wah effect. When placed the other way round noise is minimal in my setup.
Sounds similar to vox and cry baby classic wahs and gives a fairly nice effect. Better with some sort of overdive to take off the slightly smooth feel.

The worst feature is the button has to be pressed seperate from the pedal so you need an extra beet to engage or really fast feet.

I don't use a wah a lot. I really like to use it for a more controlled version of U2's "Mysterious Ways" and some Clapton, Bob Marley type stuff too. I had been using a really crappy Rogue pedal but it finally gave. The Rogue actually had better dynamics but it was way too noisy. Honestly I was dissapointed with this pedal. From the outside it looks like it would be a great pedal but that is not the case. I can't decide now if I should go with the Dunlop or Vox. More money, but should do a better job.
