ProCo Deucetone

You don't need to be an engineer to work this.

I was looking for a wide ranging distortion pedal that was musical and quiet. I've tried the Boss DS-1 and it was harsh and nasty. Enter the Deuce. I've played with alot of settings on this unit but my fav is cascading the two channels together with Ch. A set to Turbo with Dist at 10:00 and volume at 3:00 and Ch. B set to Clean with Dist. on 10:00 and volume to taste. So Ch A. is slamming some signal into B. This is so versatile it's amazing...dial back your guitar volume and switch to rhythm pickup - there's a nice sweet blues tone that's defined with a touch of raunch. Crank your guitar volume on the treble pickup and you have the baddest Marshall in a box with harmonics and mids just sizzling with that "aw" mid sound that conveys authority in your solo. VERY controllable too. The other bonus is that this setting tightens up your low end crunch which Rats are known to lack a bit. Unbelievable harmonics and sustain drip off of your strings like liquid - it's something to behold. Yeah... you could say I like my Deuce :)

If had to go to a gig with one pedal.. I'd use the Deuce Rat. You can pretty much cover any overdrive/distortion scenario. Of course - need I say that this should go infron of a TUBE amp for best results? I like solid state too for its value, but SS is a bit too honest with the frequencies and this unit will come off as harsh with that kind of amp.

Not a 10 because the cable plugged in backwards so made things a little awkward to get used to. As for many people stating not useable overdrive, well, NOT TRUE!. This is the sweetest sounding drive / Distortion pedal I have. I have sold all my other pedals and only kept this one. You have to get used to it a little bit, and then dial in the tone you want. The tone tweaking is limitless especially when you start cascading the 2 channels. I use this with my Strat, Les Paul and ES335 thru a twin Reverb. WOW!. I now feel like have a nice 3 channel amp. I have tried all sorts of Real Tube Drive pedals and Solid States. Best thing is to get a nice clean amp and then try all sorts of pedals to find one that works for you. This was my favorite after trying many different drive pedals and this gave me the flexibility of having multiple drive / distortion pedals in one unit with vintage circuit layouts and MOJO sound.

Not noisy at all. I use batteries so noise is very low to non existent. LOVE IT. Great Scofield, to Carlton to Smashing Pumpkins!. Wow What a combo of tones. Also, Love the true Bypass. It actually works.

I use this with a Fender Twin Reverb so I have super clean and When i kick in the drive YOWZER! I was very impressed for this being a non tube Pedal.

Built LIke Rock. I would gig without a backup. Works great and if you get caught in a scuffle, toss it at your opponent, should knock him out cold!. Like a black metal brick!!! Proco has excellent reliability in general. built for gigging musicians.

Haven't had to deal with them but from what I hear, if it needs repair even beyond the warranty period, they take care of it as long as you are willing to pay for shipping to them. Cannot beat that.

What I love about it - Great tone and Very low to no noise even when engaged.
COmpared it to many different drive pedals, Big Muff, SD Twin Tube etc etc.
Wish it had a treble and bass tone control instead of just a filter which rolls off the highs and drives up the lows. But gives it a kind of Class A Tonal Quality.
Creativity is opened up once you turn it on. Super Sweet.
Buy one and you won't regret it.

Ok, this pedal is a bit hard to use straight from the box. The input and output jacks are on the opposite sides of the pedal than they are on normal pedals for one though this isn't to much of a hassle. Second it takes a lot of fine tweaking to get to the exact sound you want. I know a lot of people that just plug in and play. I'm someone who is very concerned with his sound so this pedal takes a lot of time to zero in on the perfect sound.

On to that sound I was trying to tweak in. That is a 10 you see here. I've seen a lot of people here giving this pedal bad sound scores because it's hard to dial something in or because it doesn't sound exactly like an old Rat or a Turbo.

The first thing I'd like to say is that it is the Dirty Rat that doesn't sound like this pedal since the Dirty Rat was made from this pedal. With that aside I've had no trouble dialing in any Rat sounds. I own an original "The Rat", a "Small Box Rat", a "Turbo Rat", and the Deucetone. I can get any of those pedal's sounds perfectly....with the right tweaking that is. I have noticed that when I do achieve the sound of say, The Rat, even though the pedal is selected on the deucetone the dials are set differently. SO if you're used to an older Rat sound and just try to dial in the same settings from it it isn't going to sound the same. You need to wrok at it to get it perfect.

IF you do stick with it though you can get almost any distortion sound you are looking for between the different pedal settings and cascading the two together. I'd just keep a notebook handy for when you decide to play around with it.

I'm pretty sure the Deucetone came out in '02 so I guess that makes it 5 years now that I've had it. I do a lot of gigging and this pedal has seen some hell. A big reason I got it was because I didn't want my older Rats going through the ringers now that they're getting on in age.

I've dropped this pedal, had crap spilled on it, definately stomped on parts of it that weren't supposed to be stepped on and it's still working in perfect shape. Mine could use a decent cleaning though.

I've never had cause to doubt that this pedal wouldn't work for a show.

I haven't had to actually deal with ProCo about my Duecetone but have in the past sent my older Rats in for FREE repairs. Yes ProCo will fix almost any problem with their pedals, for free, as long as you pay the shipping. So I'd say that's about as good as customer service gets.

With great customer support, a large range of sounds, and it being 2 pedals for the price of one I'd say this pedal had been one of my best purchases. It's not a pedal for those that want to plug in and start playing though. It takes a fine ear to train this pedal to something you want. However, if you're really picky about your sound and want something that can really get you exact what you are looking for I'd say get this pedal. There are very few pedals as diverse as this one.

I understand the frustration of many reviewers here.

For me, the main problem with this unit is design. The selection switches on the back, coupled with the "in" jack on the left and "out" jack on the right (streeeetttcch those patch cords) make everyday use a real pain in the butt. Not cool at all.

And then there is dialing in a sound. Because of the options available, this is necessarily going to be more difficult than a single distortion pedal, and you will spend time getting to know the settings. So, there's also a bit of a learning curve compared to your basic pedal. There's a lot to be said for pedals that don't require much tweaking; this isn't one of those. I'm still getting used to it. Once you get the concept (which reminds me of nothing so much as the chemistry of cooking--a little more salt here to cut the vinegar's bite there) you are good to go.

My amp (Vox AC30) is not footswitchable between channels. I wanted the standard "clean, crunchy, and lead" options at my feet, preferably in the same pedal, which would then quell the desire for other distortion pedals. The Deucetone Rat, happily, delivers.

Again, it's tough to just plug and play and be happy. You need to spend a bit of time seasoning the stew. But once you get how to use this pedal, you've got a wide array of sounds to play with. Note: some better than others, but many quite Rat-ty. It is possible that the Rat responds better to humbuckers than to single coils. I've spent more time with my Les Paul than my Tele with it, and when I've switched between the two, it required a whole new tweakout.

Use their settings guide as a start. They are fairly accurate to their "source" in a generic way, and they give you a sense of what each Rat option (Vintage, Dirty, Turbo, Clean) sounds like. Then, season to taste--using the tone filter knobs is key.

When I first got this unit I was kind of annoyed because, frankly, I didn't think the Turbo Rat setting sounded quite like a Turbo Rat, nor did the Vintage Rat setting sound like a Rat of Olde, etc. But those sounds are there--you have to sort of put your preconceptions aside and use your ears and digits.

I've found great tones using various options on Channel A (usually, Vintage or Turbo), which I "boost" with the Clean Rat setting (actually something of an overdriven compression) on Channel B.

The Rat pedals are known for their aggressive sound, and there is growl, howl, and buzz galore within this unit. For my ears, that certain snarly growl is the "special" sound of the Rat; for your more gooey, more syrupy distorto sounds no doubt other pedals can be more "special." However, if you look at the triumvirate of iconic distortion pedals--the TS808, the Big Muff, and the Rat--you can get a very decent approximation here of any of those sounds, and many others.

A dual pedal like this suits a certain market--people looking to have a few "channels" to switch between without having to fuss with different pedals. Otherwise, you just get two pedals, right?

Of iconic distortion pedals, the Rat has always been the most versatile, able to go from the natural snarl of an overdriven tube amp to "face-melting blister." This pedal gives you the ability to do that without reaching down and turning the knob up, with plenty of options to tailor the sound. I'm not sure you "fall in love" with a pedal like this, at least not at first. But it can become a reliable and trusty friend on your pedalboard.

The online manual is pretty good in giving you sample tones to work with, though I question the accuracy of who they're actually supposed to sound like (the Gilmour and Brian May in particular sound very dissimilar). I found it very very difficult to get good sounds from this pedal, in particular balancing the two Rat units so that one wouldn't cancel the other out or be too quiet when cascaded together.
The interface is fairly straight forward, but at certain points, turning the dials doesn't seem to make a difference!

I play with a 72 Telecaster Deluxe (humbuckers) and a US Strat through a Marshall 30. I experimented trying the Rat through the clean channel and then through a very slightly distorted channel, the clean option was slightly better.
The pedal is very very noisy. On it's own, straight to the amp there is virtually no hum (except with Strat, obv). But I play with it in sequence with a Wah, a whammy pedal, a phaser and a delay unit and the amount of hum created when I connected the Rat was ridiculous. I also found that if both Rats were cascaded together in the effects loop, a painful hiss occurred. Absolute nightmare.
The most disappointing thing was that there was damn near no difference between the four different Rat Options of Clean, Dirty, Vintage or Turbo. The clean reached annoyingly high distortion levels just past 12 on the distortion dial. The Vintage and Turbo were indistinguishable to my ear.
This lead to me finding it very difficult to jump between two levels of distortion for solos, heavier sections. I was in particular trying to recreate the tones of Tom Morello, attempting to recreate the double tracked heaviness of his riffs, and Johnny Greenwood's work with Radiohead. The pedal would be better just using one of the channels to boost for a solo...but then why not just buy an individual rat

I wouldn't use to gig because of the stupid hiss and hum. Buildwise though it's a brick, wouldn't worry abot breaking it.

No need

This is definitely the most disappointing pedal I've ever brought. All the features Id' gotten excited about were a total let down. The 'three individual rats' it boast have very little variation and the cascading of the two pedals is completely redundant, they either combine to make a hideous squeal, cancel each other out or just make no difference at all.
I brought this pedal so I could jump between two/three distortion sounds mid song, a la Greenwood, Morello and pretty much any other guitarrist. I found it impossible to configure my own sounds to do this.
I'm putting the pedal back on ebay and opting for two seperate distortion units.

Easy to find good sounds. This is the kind of box where you can immediately be pleased with a sound and stop foolin' around. Even when switching from single coils to humbuckers, I find the perfect sound right away, and the knobs are just a matter of quick adjustments. One could be disappointed not to able to store sounds, but that does not matter to me.

From far my best effect, for months and months. I can actually live without any other effects in my arsenal, MT-2, GT-6, Tonelab, MXR104, Dime, Zombie, Big muff, BB-2, (perhaps even without the POD XT Live) but life would be absolutely vain WITHOUT THE DEUCETONE.

Graal reached. Period. Next mission please.

My fav are Clean(?) Rat and Turbo Rat. What a cream !!! I rarely daisy chain, as I always love each character of the models and go not further. When I do, it is like a roaring lion, screaming all lungs out. Thanks ProCo: I have stopped running a binge on effect boxes (until getting real sick) and I spend much more time banging away the guitar.

Would not live without it. This pedal should be illegal.

I play Hard Rock, Rock, Trash, Blues, Country.
But as soon as I activate the led on the Deucetone, forget about country and easy music: I go damn nuts with monster rock tunes.

Easy to use channels individually. Easy to hook up for 2-channel use. Pretty easy to dial-in some nice tones, you just have to experiment. (Running in dual-channel mode increases the difficulity in finding useful tones.) THE BIG ISSUE FOR ME: It would be a MUCH BETTER design if the diode switches were on the FRONT panel rather the rear, so you could read them easily! I'm downgrading from 8 or 9 because of this feature. Check out the Radial Tonebone Classic or Hot Brit to see what i mean. I don't have a problem with ProCo attaching their own silly names to the switch positions (as opposed to Radial's functional names) - but, rear-end switches is really a BAD design. ProCo management needs to re-think this.

It is possible to find a variety of unique, quality tones. Some of the tones are nicely compressed. And, it IS possible to get good tones from either single channel, rather than only the 2-channel option (as another reviewer wrote.) Keep in mind that ProCo sells individual pedals - such as "You Dirty Rat" - which are actually a subset of the Deucetone. You really DO have a wide tone pallate. The Clean and Turbo Rats especially, are nice. I play a Strat and a LP Custom through a Marshall clean channel, and both sound great with the Deucetone. I also externally EQ my signal for added texturizing, which complements the Deucetone nicely.

The Deucetone can accommodate classic rock, blues, and heavier stuff. Maybe not balls-out metal, but pretty much every other genre of electric guitar. If you keep the "Distortion" dials low and boost the gain, set "Filter" for the degree of smoothness you want, then search for useful diode settings, you'll find some really nice tones with a Strat. Again, i want to emphasize that the placement of the diode switches is a real minus for me. They work alright, just hard to get at & read.

Pretty easy to find nice tones. The dials are basic but functional. The one thing i would say about the diode switches: it's good to have them, as they provide categories of selectable tones - i.e., once a switch setting is made, use the dials to fine-tune. It's bad where they're located; it'd be much better to have them on the top panel along with the dials, like the BoneTone pedals. Also, it would be nice to have some on-board EQ like "High", "Low", etc. rather than simply a "Filter" dial.

There is a wide range of tones available, from either channel individually, or chained together. One reviewer was unable to arrive at satisfactory sounds - to quote: "...sounds like a fuzzy metal zone with less gain. " Well, that would certainly be ONE particular tone you could find....along with DOZENS of others. It's always hard to judge an extreme comment, because you don't know what else is going with that person's setup, equipment, venue, etc. Another comment from the same reviewer: " ... I also started having some led problems right before I sold it " Well, that might be the clue ... a defective Deucetone? Anyway, rest assured that there are MANY varied, quality tones available with the Deucetone, despite one or two users who are having specific problems. Tip: Buy it new, then return it if unhappy! The Deucetone ain't the only stomp out there ... the field's ripe with options. But it's one of the few that affords you such a rich variation of quality tones.

A fine distortion stomp. Two-channel design is nice, and compares to other models of this type (although it isn't designed with 12AX7's like several other models are.) There are many good-quality tones available. (Another reviewer remarked that you have to chain the channels together to arrive at good sounds ... not so. Either channel individually can produce several nice sounds, EQ'ed to your taste. Chaining adds to the mix! (Ex: try the "Turbo Rat" setting combined with the "Clean Rat" .... EXcellent.)

Hard to get a good usuable RAT sound. Doesn't sound as "alive" as the classic rats. Less fuzz that a regular RAT. That's a bad thing because IMO when it comes to RATS no fuzz= VERY thin tone.

DOES not live up to the RAT reputation.

I play all kinds of classic rock. For Zeppelin to floyd, radiohead, guns to iron maiden which is about as heavy as it gets for me. At first try I noticed it sounded thin. Of course, since I am a fan of the RAT sound, and a radiohead fan, I gave this pedal a huge chance. Try 3 hours of my time. That's a alot of time just sitting tinkering. Determined... Everytime I thought I got a decent sound I would switch to my Turbo rat or RAT (no-led)and they would instantly sound amazing compared to the Deucetone. The Deucetone couldn't do it for me. I can see how someone playing at bedroom levels can think this pedal sounds great, but have you ever tried cranking your amp? Regular RATs tend to loose bottom end, but the deucetone comepletly looses it's bottom end and sounds thin thanks to the lack of fuzz. I strongly advise trying the other RATS if you like the Deuce. If the Deuce impressed you, you've only got a slight taste of what a RAT can do. Do a little research and find out what the perfect rat is for you. For me its my no-LED RAT.

No manual. If your familiar with the rats and the boost concept you shouldn't have any problem. But if you don't it could be a little hard to set this one.

I bought it a year ago. I spent a lot of time searching for a distortion that has good crunch and a fuzzy reminiscence. I play through diferent devices untill i get a RAT 2. It was what i was looking for. I was satisfied with this one but I want something with more midrange and a booster too, I decided to buy the Deucetone.

I set de turbo rat on channel A and Woooow!!! thats what I wanted. Crunch and midrange with a little fuzz... damm good pedal. The vintage rat sounds more like a RAT 2 (I haven't tried a real vintage one) but a little less fuzzy. Great compression and big sound, even at lower distortion settings. The dirty rat is a nice fuzz with good sustain, not punchier as a Big Muff but has a rat touch that sounds pretty cool. The Clean Rat is hard to describe... very useable as a clean or dirty boost and it can makes your sound fatter when you cut the treble and increase distortion. Nice feedback when you combine it with the other rats.

For distortion I used the Turbo on channel A and the Clean on channel B for boost.

I often use the Vintage on channel A when I want more compression. And use the dirty the few ocassions when I want fuzz.

It works better on tube amps(more harmonics)... it gets a little harshy on solid states, but it can be controlled with the filter and rolling back the distortion.

very dependable

I play alternative, indie, hard rock, grunge, blues... I've been playing for 15 years. This pedal covers all my needs.

3 knobs per channel. 2 channels. Also a 3-way switch per channel. Difficult to get a sound outta this thing. It does an alrite Gilmour Rhythm sound but leads sound distant and non present. Besides Gilmour there isnt too much in this thing... And if that the tone your after I HIGHLY recomend a Skreddy Top Fuel. Anyways they have the pedal in a nice bombproof casing so don't hesitate to throw it out the window when you get it.

At first this pedal sounded great. I find most pedals do, simply because most people fool themselves into thinking this pedal is the shit. The novelty wears off! You???ll get over the fact you think this is the ultimate rat. I???ve be playing for awhile and I remember trying an old rat. 21 years ago I would say. I was very impressed with the sound, I loved it. It was my rhythm guitarists favourite pedal. Our band split and I forgot about the RAT. Then I picked up the Deucetone thinking it would bring back that awesome sound. It didn???t. Sounds nasal, and I can???t find a good sound out of it. Well, u can???t blame proco, almost every guitar company seems to go downhill after they???ve been around awhile. Anyways problem solved I got a vintage rat from about 21 years ago and I???m very happy now. I???m gonna go write a review for that badass, just though I???d write a review for this guy first and warn people this pedal is nothing like the older rats. The best sound I could get almost sounds like a fuzzy metal zone with less gain. I also started having some led problems right before I sold it.

Thx to the bomb proof casing this section would've got a 10. BUT to my amazement the Deucetone outdid itself again... As I mentioned I started having LED problems right before I sold it. Thank god my friend was kind enough to take it off my hands for 70 bucks. He's a bedroom wanker so he didnt care about no LED. BTW he has a solid state amp and let me warn you: the overfuzzed, muddy, dark sound out've my tube amp gets multiplied into terd heaven thru that thing.

Thanks to my friend they never had to hear me bitch about how this product DOES NOT live up to the RAT reputation.

HIT THE BACK BUTTON ON YOUR BROWSER AND LOOK FOR A DIFFERENT PEDAL. Whatever it is you want this pedal to do there are pedals out there that do that 3x as good for 1/2 the price. In other words if your after marshall crunch in a box and david gilmour tones, get 2 seperate pedals! They'll have a better resale value and sound quality. I learned my lesson on buying a "multi pedal" once and for all. Its too bad all the reviewers before me were noobs. Then I might have got some warning about this pedal's sound issues... I might look into an MI-audio Crunch Box for screamin marshall in a box tones ( most reviewers before me said this pedal NAILS those tones...morons...no wait i'm the moron for beileving them.

I'll give this category a "7" just because it DOES take quite a bit of "work" (if you could call it that - i call it "Fun") to find "keeper" tones. On the other hand .... i'm a freak when it comes to graphic EQ's, so this part of my signal-chain adds even more "complexity" to my setup. The Deucetone alone IS easy per se; rotary knobs .... what's easier than that? ONE THING i'd comment on though ... the channel mode/diode switches SHOULD HAVE been placed on the top of the box along with the rotaries, not the back. Toying with the device is more cumbersome this way, because I have to keep reaching around the box to switch them, and I can't READ the switch settings up-front, so I keep "peeking" around the corner to see what I just selected!

To me, the Deucetone provides an extremely rich palette of tone possibilities. I LUV to experiment with tone, as we all do .... the Deucetone gives me opportunities to find subtle-to-not so subtle tone variations. The diode switches are a nice design feature, as they provide the basis for complete categories of tones via the knobs. One thing in particular i've found that works well is to cut way back on the "Distortion" knob - something like 1-2 - then fool with your EQ and dials. I've been able to find Eric Clapton, SRV, and Johnny Winter tones with this technique. Santana's in there too ... just bring the gain UP via "Distortion", then balance with the "Filter" knob. Of course, my guitar and graphic EQ'ing ALWAYS plays a big part in anything i'm doing in my mix, so all of this is subjective. Overall, the Deucetone WILL give you a plethora of sound ... just have FUN, for goodness sake! DON'T feel discouraged if you don't find that "special tone" you're looking for .... for one thing, it's probably IN there, but you haven't found it yet. Also, how you EQ your setup externally plays a HUGE part in tone quality. My suggestion: run your guitar through a graphic EQ like MXR's 10-ban unit; then the Deucetone; then either the amp, or a 2nd graphic EQ unit, or perhaps another box you like, such as a compressor. SHAPING is the key ---- the Deucetone will take on an entire world of new possibility if you focus on SHAPING your sound.

"5" just as a "neutral" rating. It is a solid device ... heavy and strong with thick steel housing. Nothing's broke on me YET .... :-|

The Deucetone is definitely a Keeper. I own other "Add-On's" like graphic EQ's, OD's, compressor .... all wonderful to have. But the Deucetone is part of the mix now. It definitely ADDS to my enjoyment. My music style varies from light-to-heavy Blues; classic Rock; Heavy Rock (not "metal" per se .... unless i need to vent some anger ...); light jazz. I've played off and on since the late '60's. I presntly have a Strat (LUV that baby) and a LP Custom vintage 1976. My amp's are a Marshall AVT 275 (new) and a Gibson Lab-Series solid state, vintage late '70's. There are MANY, MANY pedals out there ... esp. all the "boutique" varieties, and the makers make them all sound great. IMHO, the Deucetone compares favorably with anything i've seen, played, or read about.

I just bought this product off ebay for 95$ US. I?m hoping I get at least that back when I resell it. Hard to get a good sound out of it. WOW watta piece of crap. That might seem a little harsh but that?s honeslty how I feel. This was my first e-bay bid and I don?t like it. U bid on a product u?ve never herd of or tested, then u have a to wait for it to come in. I?m so used to going to my local store and walking out with my new piece of equipment. WHAT A disappointment. Read on to see what im talking about.

: I regret buying it. Personally I don?t post on the HC forums but I read them all the time. Usually the pedal geeks on there want to check out new stuff. I did a search and there were no threads about this pedal. Why? Because they?re disappointed. I?ve been watching ebay for awhile now and these things go up for sale a lot for such a relatively unknown product.( In Canada theres only 1 proco authorized dealer.) People are unloading these puppies often. Why? Because they?re not satisfied. This is pedal is worth 180$ online probably a lot more in stores. For that price you?re in boutique heaven. That?s the sweet spot of boutique pedals. For those who don?t know: A boutique pedal is handmade by an independent company, with quality parts and design. In other words these companies are herd of by word of mouth. So if anybody?s herd of them, it?s probably because they make very well made, well sounding pedals. I highly recommend doing a HC forums search on boutique pedals and other quality pedals and buy one of those instead. The mi-audio crunch box and the catalinbread SCOD are 2 of my favourite pedals of ALL time. The deucetone doesn?t compare. Too fuzzy for palm muted stuff. No low end. Go for the Mi-audio Tube Zone for an exellent distortion unit. Consider a Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde if you like the 2 channel idea. Using 1 channel for main distortion, then kicking in channel 2 for leads is a nice concept BUT the deucetone doesn?t sound usable unless u have 2 channels blended together? sucks. I?m using this simply with a les paul standard and a fender Blues jr. Thru one channel the sound is dull. Boring. Lifeless, no harmonics. You can counter that to some degree with the other channel but it still has those qualities. My recommendation: There are TONS of distort. pedals out there today, especially in the price range of this pedal. Take my advice and streer clear of this guy, theres so many options, just continue searching and u?ll find something of better sound.

I already talked long enough, most of this stuff is covered under sound quality.

Not easy to get a great sound initially if you're trying to cascade channels. But once you find your tone - look out. Extremely versatile. Individual channels are easy out of the box. Settings guide is not too helpful - I had to search for my own sound but I used the settings guide for ideas to start. Curious thing - all of the settings for channel cascading in the guide go from more compression in the 1st channel to less in the 2nd (e.g. Turbo to Clean or Vintage to Turbo). The setting I discuss below goes from less compression to more (Turbo to Vintage). Its far and away my favorite.

Features have been covered. SOund quality is superb. This is aimed at humbucker players (Les Paul, etc.). Try this set up with your amp for the most outrageous, musical Marshall and beyond tone:

Cascading the two channels:

Channel 1: Turbo; Distortion at 9:30; Filter at 2:00; Volume at 2:30.

Channel 2: Vintage; Distortion at 11:30; Filter at 2:30; Volume as desired.

Use a Fender Jazz Medium pick with the sharper pick edge. Set your amp mids a touch lower (don't scoop).

This tone has the pronounced "fixed wah" sound Pro Co talks about in its user manuals. Great warmth, bristling harmonics are over the top. Great crunch and endless sustain too. The best hot Marshall in a box tone I've ever heard. The beauty of this setting as you can use the Vintage channel by itself and then kick in the Turbo for leads, or use them fulltime together for a raunchy-sweet, yet very defined and musical sound. Screaming yet liquid and very controllable - devastating indeed! Your guitar will almost play itself. Hard to explain in words, but you'll understand. But you have to try it with the Fender Jazz pick for full effect or it won't have the same punch and shimmer.

See sound quality - I've played tried pedals ad nauseum and this stands above the rest for your hot snarling Marshall sound (I don't mean scooped extreme metal tones - we're talking musical here). Don't get this for mellow bluesy overdrive.

I've played long enough to appreciate all types of music and have I believe an ear for good tone. Try the settings above - I think you'll like it!! :)

Easy to use, but takes some time due to the many possibilities provided by the six rats inside the pedal. No manual, but you can download one from Proco.

I inherited a pristine vintage Fender Deluxe Reverb amp from my Grandfather. This amp is the best sounding clean amp I have ever heard, but it HATES distortion pedals!! Most distortion pedals sound thin and buzzy through this amp. My mission or "quest" was to find a distortion pedal that would scream through my Deluxe Reverb, since I favor hard rock and 80's metal.

I have basically been looking for a way to make my Deluxe Reverb sound Marshall-like. I have three Gibson Les Paul Standards, and like the Les Paul through hot rodded Marshall tone. The Deucetone Rat gets me VERY close to this sound, and I am VERY PICKY.

I dont have much use for any of the Rat versions by themselves, they are too fuzzy/flabby for my taste. I have the pedal set up so that I am blending both channels together to make one sound. Combining two channels together gives the sound more crunch and definition, and is thicker than just one Rat by itself. I followed Proco's advice and I use the more compressed Rats to feed the less compressed Rats.

For example, right now I am using the Dirty Rat to boost the Clean Rat, which gives me a great early 80's shred tone. I compared it to my Dokken "Breaking the Chains" CD, and the tone is very close to George Lynch's tone on that album. To my ears, it is very Marshall like, which is what I wanted. Another combination that I use is the Vintage Rat into the Turbo Rat, this provides some huge distortion tones and is very crunchy. The pedal can be very noisy when combining channels, but is actually fairly quiet compared to some of the other two-pedal combinations I have used before.

There are a lot of tones possible with this pedal, and if you are using two channels together like I am, be prepared to spend a lot of time fine tuning your sound. The filter knobs are very important, and really change the sound and feel of the pedal. Experiment with them in all different positions, and you will probably find the sound you want.

I play hard rock, some blues, and 80's metal. My Fulldrive 2 covers the blues and cleaner sounds, and the Deucetone is for everything else. If you like the basic tone of a Rat, and would like the ability to spice it up and go further with it, than the Deucetone would be good choice. I agree with the other reviewers who said it is very Marshall like. This pedal is the best I have heard through my amp, and it gives my beautiful clean tone some serious attitude, so I will give it a 9.

I have owned Rat pedals in the past, and none of them ever failed me. I do have one gripe, one of the footswitches on my pedal was not screwed all the way together, and for some reason the footswitch did not work until I tightened it up. Since then, everything has been ok, and the pedal is built like a tank.

I have been playing for 11 years and have owned or tried almost every distortion pedal out there, and most sound dreadful through my Deluxe Reverb. I have used Rats in the past, and liked how they sounded when used/combined with another overdrive/distortion pedal. I was using a Turbo Rat and a Tube Screamer together, which got me pretty close to the sound I wanted. I didnt like having to use two separate pedals to make one sound, and I wanted to clean up the wiring/space on my pedalboard, so I sold the Turbo Rat and Tube Screamer and bought the Deucetone. Now I have two pedals fused together, and many more sonic options than I previously had, and my pedalboard is neater and more ergonomical.

I think that this pedal would work for most sounds, except for that Nu-Metal garbage that kids seem to like these days. This pedal has brought some much needed aggressiveness to my Deluxe Reverb. I considered the Tonebone Hot British pedal before I purchased the Deucetone, but did not like its construction (jacks soldered to PCB) and I did not want to use a separate AC adapter just for that pedal. Overall, I am happy with this pedal. It compliments my Fulldrive 2 very well, and works with my Les Pauls. It is expensive, but in my opinion it is worth it. Treat it right and it should last forever.

the interface is intuitive. The only tricky part is understanding that to use both channel you have to put the input from instrument on the IN on Channel A and the output to amp on Channel B's OUT

No real noise, except you can hear a slightly audible but not bothersome click when engaging either foot switch. If proco could make it totally silent that would be awesome. The fidelity is not compromised by the switch to my ears.

The set up is cleaner sounding and less noisy sounding than stringing together 6 rat pedals, which is to be expected.

i have a <20 watt class A amp, the Emery sound Superbaby. it's a very dynamic amp, and can use 6L6s EL34s or EL84s. The point being that it covers the overall sonic character of Marshall, Fender, and Vox AC130 amps. i generally kept the amp settings low so that there was little preamp saturation occuring, and only a little compression from the power and rectifier section. the EQ was neutral, and the tubes i used were ones i have noted for a balanced and more neutral sonic character. i figured this would be a good baseline to hear what the duecetone contributes or takes away from the sound. Sometimes i cranked it though, just because.

i have yet to find a stomp box that does not impinge on the dynamic range and feel of playing through this type of set up. I can say the deucetone is the most dynamic and playable distortion pedal i have played. By varying how hard you hit the strings on your guitar it's possible to go from clean to overdriven, or overdriven to distorted. Getting the most of the deucetone takes time experimenting, and integrating it with your amp and instrument. it's definitely possible to use it in a stage set up and switch between a clean sound (bypass) to a crunchy rythm (single channel) to a juicy lead (Chan A cascaded into Chan B) and i think that makes it pretty versatile.

i downloaded the presets suggestions from the proco website and tried them. they are a good place to start. They make a big difference in the character of sound. They are all interesting in their way, and would work well in the right mix of sounds coming from the band.

My impressions so far of the different rat's in the box are general, but here it is:
-You can use it as a clean boost.
-it makes an awesome fuzz sound.
-There are a vast number of distinct lead sounds possible.
rythm sounds are trickier to dial in and require variety in how hard or softly you hit the strings to sound their best (in my opinion)
-The vintage rat has a pleasant and smooth sounding EQ profile. It sounds sweet, and it rocks.
-The turbo rat has a more neutral EQ character that preserves more of the amp's tone overall. The turborat sounds awesome on bass, and is better sounding than the Juggernaught. Using deucetone's other possibilities on bass makes for a lot of tone. (I use a GK 700rb head and 2 EV speakers with mica flakes and one EV paper coned, plus the horn).
i am giving the duecetone a 10 because of what it contributes in the way of versatility and sonic possibilities, and because it is better than anything else i have tried. It is a real, (NOT fake sounding) analog, sound shaping device. It can go from sounding pretty neutral to very particular in terms of how it affects the midtones. Some of the settings are harsh, some of them are very smooth. It's up to you.

if i were an engineer at proco and i were seeking to improve this product, i would include a power adapter, find a way to preserve the touch dynamics coming from the guitar to the amp that are getting truncated if that is inherantly possible. ...and i would lower the cost, while keeping the quality the same.

i'm not going to say anything bad about it, it's brand new. it looks like it is solidly made within reason. it's not on a shock proof mount or anything so i'm not going to try throwing it off the stage or anything. Even if it did stop working i think fixing it would be as easy as resoldering a connection or something. i'll let you know in a few years if any of the components burn out.

if i were overengineering it i would put it on a shock proof mounting and make it waterproof (or at least spilling beer on it proof)

it's an expensive toy, but its well made. My favorite details are the fact that the indents on the knobs glow in the dark! Originally i was going to get a vintage rat. The reason i wanted one in the first place was because i tried the RAT2 version way back and liked the sound, (and i figured succumbed to the idea that if it says vintage it must be better as it is tried and true-stupid reasoning) especially the way the filter lets you dial in the amount of bite in the distortion you get. Since then i have heard some friends use it on their set ups for bass and guitar, so I know it can sound great.

Bottom line? There are four big sounds two choose from, and hundreds of ways to tweak and combine them. i also have a vintage MXR distortion+ mesa boogie v-twin, maxxon OD808 reissue, so the Deucetone rounds off the palette of distortion stomp box sounds. i wish the price was cheaper, but it's not that unreasonable and i wasn't disappointed.
Oh yeah, and it's cheaper than 6 rats individually, you save at least 125$ if you shopped hard on ebay and pawnshops.

AWESOME - I have several overdrive and distortion boxes (fulltone to BOSS to Visual Sound) and I must say this is my favorite. Both sides have three settings that give you a wide pallate to work with - from heavy fuzz to overdriven clean. My G&L 500 loves the clean and my 335 and PRS loves it all. I can't tell you how much I love this thing - well worth the money. Also, this thing is very quiet...crazy quiet given the fuzz it can deliver.

Do yourself a favor - buy one and forever love this purchase. For the money and quality, you can't go wrong. It pass up my Fulldrive 2 and my Dr J & H and has become my favorite. i have been playing for 25+ years pro to semi-pro.

It is two rat pedals with switches on back to vary it up. Pretty darn easy. No editing patches, just knoby fun.

This is a brilliant pedal. In reality, there are three distortion pedals in the world. I compare nothing to amp distortions, but to these three pedals: A Rat, A Big Muff Pie, and a Tube Screamer. It seems like every distortion pedal that is worth a damn falls into these categories. (Save for the really high end botiques from fulltone, zvex, red witch and the the like.) I say this pedal is probably the best thing that has come out since the rat.
Don't get me wrong though, the vintage pro-co is probably the best effect of the four choices. Though I am growing partial to the dirty rat.
I play post-rock, experimental, shoegaze, noise rock, indie rock, whatever. Basically, I make alot of noise. This pedal is great, probably the best pure distortion I ever had access to. There is quite a few variations to this pedal, and almost no limitations.

No backup. Rats are built like tanks.

I play indie rock and post rock. I make alot of noise and distortion, actual MUSICAL distortion, is always needed. This pedal is as good as any botique distortion pedal, but the price reflects that. I chose it because of the versatility. Dual distortions are very effective, and this is probably the best out there as far as its abilities and tone.

For Sonic Alchemists, this pedal offers a good range of possibilities, and is one of the best distortions on the planet.

I would say it is worth the price of admission, and proco has returned to brilliance.

This is an awesome piece of hardware in the way it's set up. I didn't give it a 10/10 for ease of use only really because it does take a little time to get your head around some of the functions and how the cascading feature works together.

However, once you have absorbed the info in the settings guide and manual (PDF's available off www.procosound.com - great site Pro Co!) it becomes a total pleasure as great sounds virtually drip from every setting.

It also has some great features on it that have obviously been thought out thoroughly. Some of these are the two footswitches are located fairly close together - close enough to stomp on together for the cascade effect immediately, but far enough apart to engage seperately for seperate channels. Because it incorporates two independent channels, you can also plug in two seperate guitars to two seperate amps, or one guitar into stereo. Each channel also has three setting - one is Clean Rat, Vintage Rat, Turbo Rat; the other is Dirty Rat (had accolades at Namm 2005), Vintage Rat, Turbo Rat. Only personal gripe (and it's purely subjective), is that the input is on the left side and output is on the right side. This is basically the vintage setup, but is a little annoying when on a pedal board with various modern pedals (right to left signal path). Minor gripe!

No complaints really; it just takes a little dedicated time upfront to understand how everything works together, but the payoff is totally worth it at the end.

I've got a plethora of classic pedals (or had them) such as a Marshall Gov'nor, Boss DS-1, Bixonic Expandora EXP 2000R, Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer, Orbiter Fuzzface, Mesa Boogie V-Amp, etc, and have been playing guitar for 16 years; and this pedal blows them all away! Granted, they are all different tones, and I still have the Tubescreamer and Expandora on my pedalboard for their awesome overdrive sounds, but the Deucetone is THE pedal I have always wanted for anything else!

My setup is a Fender Standard Tele and Godin LG with humbuckers (believe me, I would have a Les Paul with 60's neck if I could afford it and the wife would let me!) and play through a Vox AC30CC2X and Fender Hotrod Deluxe. It is safe to say I have a fairly vintage type Class A setup, and the Deucetone absolutely shines in this environment. It has an incredibly transparent tone that shines from anywhere that you stand infront of the amp and seems not to colour my original tone at all, and is also relatively quiet compared to other pedals, even on high gain settings. It is a perfect match for a good valve amp.

Anyway, most importantly, how does it ACTUALLY sound? In my humble opinion it absolutely nails a great high gain "Marshall stack" type sound which I have been searching for for years (I have always wanted the glassy clean sound of a Vox AC30 or good Fender, so never bought a Marshall amp). It also does a fine job of modelling a 90's "Mesa Boogie" type tone, although maybe not as compressed and tight. However, I am also a big fan of vintage organic type tones of the 60's and 70's, and also of the grunge era and alt-rock vein (a la Radiohead), and this pedal absolutely nails them in my book. It also does a fine job of Hendrix fuzz tones (breaks up really nicely), biting David Gilmour type overdrive tones, etc, etc. The amazing thing is it sound great on any pickup that I use on single coils or humbuckers, and in virtually every setting! Yes I kid you not. I am dying to hear what it sounds like with my friends' Les Paul Goldtop Reissue and Fender Strat as well. I'm sure I will be in Hendrix heaven with a strat in my hands!

I would never give a 10/10 for sound on any other pedal I have played, and remember I have a Tubescreamer and an Expandora! But this pedal is insanely good in my books!!! (My wife thinks I'm weird with how much I've been gushing over a heavy peice of metal ;P)

I haven't been giggin with it yet, but I have had it at various volumes on and off at home since I bought it a week ago, and it has been entirely reliable.

I haven't needed to use customer support, but the warranty is an unconditional, including abuse! I've never heard of that level of trust in the build quality of a product.

This is the most versatile, greatest sounding, organic and transparent pedal I have ever had the pleasure of owning AND playing through. It is very hard faulting it for sound and build quality, and I would easily say that it is my favourite pedal by a country mile! It makes my spine tingle everytime I crank it up.

Also the incredible this is that it costs a lot less than the boutique pedals that aren't as flexible and don't sound as good.

If you want ever quality overdrive, distortion and fuzz tone in one box, bar hardcore scooped metal sounds and bizzaro filter effects, then you need to buy this pedal now! With a good guitar and clean valve amp, you won't be disppointed.

Easy to use. Two units in one box.

LP or Tele into a 50 watt class AB tube amp with a single channel. The Deucetone is quieter than most pedals from my experience. When diming the distortion, you'll hear some noise which is typical. The individual distortions are fine and all based of course on the classic rat clip. Dirty Rat has more compression so it is in fact a bit smoother than the other modes with less prominent highs more sustain...kind of like putting a compressor in front of a vintage rat. The Vintage Rat has a bit more crunch attitude, but still sustains. The Turbo has more highs and lows (e.g. less compression), and sustains less. The turbo is best used in cascade mode with the other rats or as a booster into an amp. The clean mode focuses on less distortion all around. Except for the clean mode, all of the modes can range from overdrive to fuzz tones. You can also cascade one channel into the other to simulate boosting an already distorted amp. This is cool - you can get quite extreme in sht esustain and harmonics.

In summary, if you want the classic Marshall distortion tones where you can actually hear the note separation (and I don't mean scooped Dimebag metal sounds), this is the pedal for you.

very easy to use. I did get a manualwith mine and it is layed out very well. A lot of useful options with this pedal.

I use a Lone Star strat through a Super reverb. As several reviewers said a good clean tube amp is a great partner for this pedal. I have a great clean tone with just the super reverb...I set up chanel B on dirty rat mode with the distortion around 9 oclock and the filter on 3 oclock for a nice {pretty overdriven} blues tone...I set chanel A on vintage with the distortion at 11 oclock and the filter on 3 oclock for a killer marshall tone then I can cascade them for a slight boost and a little extra gain for leads. I am in four channel heaven with one pedal, Unbelivable, I have a closet full of boutique distorton and overdrive pedals and this blows them all away hands down!

Don't know yet, Only had it for a couple weeks. I have had plenty of problems with other pedals that cost more. This seems built better and is definately heaver than any others I own. I have however played a lot in the two weeks that I have had this and had no problems so far. I will post on this in a few weeks.

I give it a 9 due to not knowing about the reliability and service yet. As far as the features, ease of use and the sound, I totally love it. I play Rockin Blues mostly and this works perfectly. I Played New years eve at a house party and loved it. Had many compliments from the band and people at the party. Haven't played out with it yet but will soon. My set up is: Strat, Mayer/vox wa, Duecetone, phase 90, tc electronics chorus with a leslie mod, chandler ecco to black face super reverb. This pedal works with a wa much better than any other distortion pedal I have ever used or heard. It also does as good of job of maintaining you're original tone as any of the boutique pedals that make that claim. The difference is that most of those pedals that really do a great job of maintaining you're original tone don't do that great of a job getting that marshall type distortion. This does both extremely well. It is truly unbeliveable to me as I have been doing the perverbial search for years and I am finished now. I have never really felt this way after any of the other pedals I have purchased over the years.

Well its set up like all rats, 3 knobs with a 3dpt switch(true bypass). Its relatively easy to use. In my opinion its really easy to get a good sound out of. I shoot for the radiohead type distortion. Johnny uses a rat, as well as a marshall shredmaster(jcm800 in black box) well this is pretty much the marshall shredmaster in a slightly bigger box with more options tone wise than you can shake your stick at.

I would like to point out something. one of the previous reviews claimed that this was good for light rock sounds, but absolutely horrible for heavy distorted sounds. now im not claiming i know more than this person, but you sound pretty stupid to me. not only did you downgrade a rat, but you then claimed that the BOSS Metal Zone had a better claim to heavy distortion than this. I belive most people will agree with me that this is in fact blasphemy.

Back to the pedal, the sound quality is very impressive, models the other rats incredibly well. the reason i bought this was because i like to run pedals together to create a blend effect, an example would be my overdrive. I use a jekyll and hyde od and ds pedal strictly for my overdrive. what i do is i switch to the clean setting on my amp and turn on both parts of the pedal. The od side is tuned to a nice light overdrive sound, while the distortion is used as a non transparent low gain boost. not a volume boost though, just a boost for my amp for extended overdrive from my all tube head.

With the rat, i tend to run both sides at once, utilizing different patches and settings to create a unique sound. Definetly a ten on the sound quality.

ive gigged with it for a bout a month now, 5 or 6 big shows with my group. But its only been a month, so theres no telling what time will bring for this rat.

Haven't had to deal with proco

I play radiohead, and a lot of acoustic with my group. Been playing for too long to remember, and if it were stolen id find the theif through the location tracking device id put in all my gear(warning to all you gear thieves) and then i'd drive to the location, along with a wooden baseball bat. You know what happens next. I hope this review helps you guys make a decision if your deciding on a distortion pedal.

Gibson LP to Deuce to tube amp. Very quiet except when diming the distortion and volume knobs - no surprise. Folks often say that Rats are a bit "fuzzy" and don't do well with intense palm muted crunch. It's true that Rats can get fuzzy (in a good way). But cascading one rat into another yields on this pedal gives a boost and provides great palm muted crunch with some wicked overtones and harmonics - really nice. The tone guide always suggests chaining the higher compression modes into lower compression (e.g. Dirty => Vintage, Vintage => Turbo, Turbo => Clean, etc.). My favorite is Vintage into Turbo...this really gives a convincing hot rod marshall crunch and sustain, with some extra nice harmonics. I searched a long time for a "Marshall in a Box" and I've definitely found it in this pedal. After cascading the two modes, I no longer use them individually. Overdrive? Hmmm....I'll stick to my TS-9 for that stuff. But Marshall Crunch and sustain? This pedal is it for me.

Sound rating says it all. This pedal actually gives you alot of control and for me, made playing screaming Marshall playing really fun again. I play all styles of music, but when the tunes get heavier, this pedal has a very satisfying tone and attack. It makes playing actually easier with all of the sustain.

There's lots of good info here on its sound. A few people have dissed the Clean RAT but I wanted to make a quick note that the Clean RAT can make an excellent transparent boost. I dial the volume on full, the distortion only on the tinniest bit (just to the first little red dot) and the filter at about 1 o'clock (I find that position is neutral). I then use this channel to boost both my clean amp sound without it breaking up for clean solo/lead and again I can use it cascaded with my distortion settings on Channel A for a dirty solo boost. Works great for me, but if your a pro you might be pickier. The ideal would be to have a volume boost knob and footswitch with my amp, why don't amps do this??? Losts have gain boosts and separate channel, but more usuful would be a volume boost at the amp. Anyway for this use the Clean RAT is pretty good and is better than the boost setting on a MARSHALL Blues Breaker 2.

I loved the clean rat. The rest is too fuzzy. You CANNOT get metal type sounds out of it. Somebody stating the opposite dont have a clue or wasnt trying. I am not too much into playing metal but trying to get a good full distorted sound out of the deucetone, it failed! The notes arent coming out clear. The light overdrive tones are superb. The clean rat is the THING, baby. Cant use only that though. Went for a GT8, has a rat also. Sold the deucetone.

If you are into light overdrives: try it. Harder distorted sounds wont be easy to get out of. IMO its a typical CAN-DO-ALOT-BUT-NOTHING-RIGHT-effect. For blues stuff use the BluesDriver BD-2 (BOSS), harder distorted stuff, get something like the Marshall Guv'nor or the MetalZone!

Its darn simple to get a good sound of this pedal, what can I say just 3 knobs for each channel how complicated can that get? I dont know if it does usually come with a manual but mine didnt, but I could easily get it from the Proco page. The only reason why I gave it a 8 and not a 9 or 10 is because I took a little time to actually get it to work, the way you route the cables is indeed really special as this pedal is literally 2 RATS in one as each channel has its own input and output jacks. So 2 guitarists could actually share this pedal at the same time. But for me I use it for 2 channels one set on an overdriven tone and the other on a heavier distortion with more bottom end. One more thing like many others have said the cascading feature the deucetone is a little tricky to get used to but after some time of tweaking it becomes second nature to cascade your two channels.

American Deluxe Telecaster through DeuceTone, GCB-95 Cry Baby, Digitech Whammy, Boss HF-2 Flanger to Crate 15 watt amp.

Generally I dont find it noisy at all, with decent cables. Even with my single coils there doesnt seem to be much hiss,hum,feedback. But I worry about it at a high volume though. But easily solved by not standing too close to the amp.

I have never got a RAT in my life before and this is the first one I got and I must say it gave me a great impression of Proco RATS, the versatility is there, you could get Clean pop sounds to Blues overdriven tones to Heavy california style distortions. Even with a crap Crate amp I have it sounds great I wonder what it could do with a higher grade amp?

I listen to and play alot of early 90's grunge/post grunge/hard rock/blues rock music for example Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine. The DeuceTone just fits right in to the sound I want, I was just playing Plush with the setting reccommended by Proco's site for 90's hard rock, I must say at some points during the song I could not differentiate my guitar's sound from the music blasting out of my speakers. It is that good and that easy to replicate your fav sounds. Takes some time to get your own original tone though but its never impossible with the DeuceTone.

Ok you can definitely depend on it, its real sturdy and I think you could probably use it as a weapon to bludgeon someone in the head easily with. The only reason why I gave it a 9 is that my DeuceTone was a little tough to get my 9V batt in and the batt holder broke because I used too much force.

I would definitely gig without a backup. No questions asked.

As I said above my influence is mainly 90's grunge/post grunge and it matches with my playing style like a suit made to measure. I have played for probably 2-3 years now, I own various other boss pedals and a Yamaha DG-stomp. For guitars I have a 40th anniversary mexican strat, PRS Santana SE, Am Deluxe Tele. If it were stolen or lost I would run down to the shop and grab a new one in a heartbeat. I love the tone and the quality of make that the DeuceTone is.

The only flaw I find now is the damn battery holder, but well its fine with it broken off anyways.

Favourite feature for me definitely has to be the cascade feature, trust me it is no trick pony or marketing ploy. It really works and you could get a real original tone out of it.

I initially wanted to get the MXR Doubleshot but after reading reviews and hearing people talk about it I immediately looked for another pedal and came across the DeuceTone, it had everything I needed on a distortion pedal, 2 channels, versatility, cascade feature what more could I ask for.

I wish the 2 footswitches were a just a little bit closer.

If you are looking for a 2 channel distortion with versatility and quality you have just found it, I highly reccomend this overdrive/distortion pedal. For this price it really is great. Oh and did I mention the DeuceTone is really 6 rats in one, they should have named it Proco DeuceTone 'RATS'.

This unit takes a little bit of attention span to get your sound if you are partigcular about what you're going for. The most challenging part is when you cascading the two units together. Generally, the most compressed setting should be in front meaning you should set Dirty Rat before Clean, Vintage before clean, Turbo before Dirty. The tone setting guide is helpful but if you were going after experimental sounds, it would take some experimentation and time.

Using with an LP STandard into a Fender tube amp. This unit is low noise with high quality cables. I've recently purchased the Vintage Rat, then went for more versatility with the Deucetone. I have to say, this unit is much smoother/warmer then the Vintage Rat when ABing against the VRat setting on the Deucetone. Overall, more high fidelity. The Vintage Rat reissue pedal seems to have harsher highs and a slight unpleasant metallic "clink" when cunking out rhythm chords. The reissue also seems to choke the bass a bit. Not so with the Deucetone.

The real surprise is the Dirty Rat setting. I'm finding that it is very versatile and able to do soft overdrive clipping (not exactly like a TS-9 style overdrive, but more transparent for humbucking pickups) as well as medium gain classic rock (e.g. Aerosmith, etc.) It can do wonderful fuzz tones too, but I don't really use fuzz in our band.

I use this rat as two separate pedals - channel one using the Dirty Rat (distortion at 10 o'clock) for the overdrive, classic rock tones and channel two for the massive Marshall crunch sound using the Turbo Rat setting (distortion at 2 o'clock). Proco says this pedal uses a germanium diode - I don't know if this means the other pedals don't and I'm not sure what impact this has, but this pedal sounds outstanding.

This is my only distortion pedal now in the chain. I have all the bases covered with this unit. My advice is if you're thinking of a Rat, go for the Deucetone instead of the standalone units.

It's tough deciding on OD/distortion pedals since there are about a million out there. I've tried all the Boss units, and some boutique units as well. This it the first pedal for me that hits the mark on the range of OD/distortion I like. Of course, your ear will decide what is right for you. But, I think this pedal represents alot of value and as a bonus has true bypass as well. If this thing disappeared or got crushed I'd be on zzounds in about 10 minutes. Check this pedal out - you won't regret it I think.

It's pretty easy to get the tone you are looking for, only has two sets of three knobs, volume,distortion, and filter. Each of the rat units have its own three knobs. Doesn't come with a manual, but it's pretty self-explanatory.

Ha ha I'm a bassist and I shred with this unit. My guitarist also uses a RAT 2 sometimes. I love the sound that the DEUCE produces with the bass, it's very growly, and really mean sounding, perfect for metal. My set up is ESP F 254-> Deucetone-> Peavy Max Bass preamp-> BBE 362-> Korg DTR-2 tuner-> Carvin DCM 1500 power amp->Ampeg SVT 810-E. My rig is ungodly loud, but so is my band. The Deucetone holds it all together with sick growl. If you any bassists out there are thinking about buying that peice of shit Juggernaut, don't do it, get the deucetone I promise you will not be dissapointed, if your looking for a hardcore sound. If you want to know what it sounds like with bass, listen to Zao.

Are you kidding me, you can kill somebody with this thing, its so heavy and thick, nicely built. It's better if you use a external power source with it, because it kills batteries quick. If this thing got stolen, I would get a new one quickly. It's nice to have other effects, but this is my main distortion.

Again this stompbox is perfect for metal. Works sick with the bass, don't let a guitar player tell you any different. It's easy to use when you figure out the settings you want, you just got to mess with it for a while.

The DT Rat has zillion possible tones and they are very easy to use. It is you who need to remember how the settings are set for that particular tone. Manual is available on the website with various setting guides. It could be the mother of all distortion units if you spend time to paly with it. I am pleased with this unit. I had TS-9, Turbo TS-9DX, Boss DS-1, and this DT Rat for home practice. I used a Boss line selector to switch between effects and I have to say DT Rat can duplicate those units easily. For gig, I just bring the DT Rat. It has all the tones I need.

You can get very close to the sound of the artists if you use setting guides from Proco (available on line). For example, Brian May's solo on many Queen's top hits.

It is built solidly and the unit is enclosed with a real thick metal cage. It can not possible be damaged by normal usage.

I am very pleased with the services I received. My unit developed some funny sign although it works OK. Mind you, I work overseas so I wrote an e-mail to ProCo at their website, the sales manager responded and gave me the address to send the unit back for repairs. No questions asked as how long I had it, or what I did to the unit. I sent the unit back.

Subsequent mails and telephone were ensued to see when the repair was completed. I had it back yesterday after 8 weeks but I am happy. The delay was because UPS didn't accept the unit to be sent to APO military and ProCo has to wait for me to tell them what to do. It turned out that a trip to US Postal office solved that (ProCo only uses UPS to pick up their packages at their shop).

By the way, the problem is that one of soldered wire came loose for some reason. And it was an easy repair for the technician. He did include a note explaining what he did and expressed he was sorry for the trouble. It can not get more personal than that.

I think in terms of services, that is number one in my book. The people I dealt with personally were courteous and helpful and the unit was repaired with care and speed. And it costed me nothing except for the postage I paid sending the unit back to ProCo.

I play almost anything; classical, Brazillian bossa nova, rock, some country, some punk rock, blues, and Jazz. I have been playing steadily for about 20 years and I own most of the brand name stuff (Fender/Music Man amps, Fender & Washburn guitars, effects of various manufacture (I still have a Maestro phaser I bought in 1978 and it still works perfectly).
If it were stolen, I would try to look for an used one (can't afford another $165). I like the features on the units as is. I did compare this DT Rat to other products under 'Ease of Use' up there.

it has 2 channels which you can cascade them together. its very easy to use each channel itself as the each channel has only 3 knobs which are distortion, filter, volume. however when you cascade them its quite challenging to produce the tone you want.

i use epiphone les paul and ibanez rx450. for amp i use marshall avt 150h and 1960b. and also i use boss ds-1, ge-7, and dd-6 together.

firstly deucetone itself produces such a nice tone. each channel has 3 different rats. for channel a, there are turbo, vintage, dirty rats and for chanel b, there are turbo, vintage, clean rats.

to make heavier sound(eg. metallica) i usually cascade two channels. but its pretty hard to make nice tone so you will need to spend some time to get right sound. and sometimes i use them independently like i play hard rock or alt.rock. and one of other channel i put clean rat to boost. its very nice

The rat duecetone is easy to use even though its six rats in one. its dist, tone, and volume. On the back you can choose between one of three rats per channel. Channel A has turbo, vintage, and dirty rat, channel B has clean rat turbo and vinatge. no manual, but there is one online to download as well as some cool presets. but presets are best to come up with yourself to suit guitar amp etc.

Ok, I have only been playing for like 3 years, I have a fender squire, hoping to upgrade soon and I use a 50 watt hughes and kettner amp. I wasnt satisfied with the distortion on the H&K so i tried some distortion pedals. The Vamp2, and a digitech OD were ones I bought and i hated them. Friend had a rat, tried it and liked it. Let me just say the Rat Duecetone is a proffesional distortion device and has really satisfied me, even through half decent equipment. The differnt rats do have unique sounds to a certain degree. The turbo has a lot more volume than the others. Some people gave the clean rat a bad rap but i actually like it and use it live. Maybe its because my amp is a little bass heavy but anyway it works. combining rats also gives good results.

Seems really reliable but it was a bit hard to find a power supply, eventually got one at a local electronics shop. Even though it was plugged in it was still going off the old 9V which was weird, but i took the battery out plugged it in and worked from then on. I gig with it and love it, really reliable, but i would say plug it in a wall and carry a seperate battery, not in the rat.

i love the sound, i play rock to worship church music and its great for all. Let me just say it kicked the crap out of evry other distortion device i tried, Im not overly experienced but like I said i tried and buyed some well known brands. I wish and hope more people get into proco rats, maybe there is a big fanbase(as such) but the music stores I went to had never heard of rats. So get the word out, try one order one, go to the website. Long live the rats!

Easy to use IF on each channel individually. For cascading the channels, not so easy..you've got to use the settings guide to get started. From there, not so bad.

Setup: Paul into Fender Deville. Not noisy. I use it in both single channel mode, and cascading channel A into B. I already have a Vinntage Rat and this one sounds a little better - meaning on the AB comparison between Deucetone Vintage Rat mode and stand alone Vintage Rat, the Deucetone's version sounds a little darker with a touch more bass to my ears. SInce I like it darker/bassier, this works fine. Overall, stunning and versatile distortion effects. The only thing I avoid is the cascading into channel B's Vintage Rat mode - the VR mode sounds better as the feeding channel versus the receiving channel. The clean and turbo rat's love to be pushed hard on channel B, so very nice, Marshally crunch!!

I'd buy this pedal again easy. One thing I'd change is to rearrange the pedal to work right to left in terms of signal chain processing, versus left to right as it is now. Most pedals work right to left. I also wish it has a TS-808 in there so I could pitch my other pedals!!

Quite easy to find a good tone. Just crank the volume to match your pickup's output and adjust the filter and distortion knobs until you've got the mix of gain and EQ you want. Let's stop beating about the bush, it's a 3-knob distortion pedal, a device which is difficult to be stumped by. the special part is on the rear panel, where you can switch each of the two rat circuits to either "turbo rat", "vintage rat", or "clean rat/dirty rat" (chan. A is dirty, B is clean).

This is a huge improvement over all of my previous distortion sounds. I'd been using some Boss distortion pedals (ds-1 and ds-2 turbo) and the distortion from one of my amplifiers, a marshall jcm 900. This pedal produces the best (so-far) fuzztone i've heard, with the perfect balance of gain and clarity. It reminds me of a Big Muff that lets you keep more of your tone's character. My favorite setting would have to be the 'vintage rat', followed closely by the 'clean rat'. the vintage rat is good for a full-on distortion while the clean rat will serve better as an overdrive or something to boost your clean tone for a solo. the 'dirty rat' and 'turbo rat' sound similar to me, both a compressed mushy fuzz but with good harmonic response (again, a big muff that lets your tone's character shine through).

Built like a tank, just like ProCo tell you every five seconds. I'm worried about stepping on the control knobs and mangling the pot shafts but i'll just have to be careful. other than that, nothing's gonna wreck it. it's my most reliable pedal actually.

OK, i've never dealt with proco, but i had a problem buying this pedal online. zZounds.com shipped me a unit with NO knobs on it. i was upset because i had hoped to start playing on it right away and i had to return it, but the next day they OVERNIGHTED a new pedal to me before i'd even returned the old one so that was very nice of them. i told them i had a gig on the weekend and they helped out as quickly as they can. excellent speedy service to correct an honest mistake, so i'm rating zZounds and not ProCo.

I play a lot of music, from blues to britpop. since i have a vintage re-issue fender and a plexi marshall, i decided i needed a Rat to complete my classic brit-pop setup. the funny thing is that this rat sounds great for any style, and has made my rig miles more versatile. if this pedal were stolen or lost, i'd buy another one in a second. if money was tight i'd buy a vintage rat or a rat 2. i'm stuck on rats now, and this pedal is responsible. i was considering buying a rat 2 for years but i'm so glad i sprung extra cash for this. 6 rats in one!

It's pretty easy, the input/output thing and cascading channels should only take 30 seconds to figure out. Also, the tone pot is backwards from most others, to the left is more bright, and to the right more dark. If you've ever used a Rat before, you'll have no problem with this.

I'm using an old 1960 Chicago model Supro. If you've never heard a supro, then think Vox and take away a little bit of warmth and reverb. I also use a Vox Ac30/6 TBX. And for my two electric guitars, An old 1960 Les Paul, and a '61 Reissue SG. This thing sounds amazing with any combination of these amps and guitars. My favorite is the SG through the Supro. It's sort of a Led Zeppelin type feel. Mine came with a little noise in the volume pot, but other than that everything works wonderfully. This is an interesting pedal because it has two channels and on each channel, three settings. On the first channel, it's the "Vinatage Rat", "Turbo Rat", And "Dirty Rat". Vintage Rat is self explanitory, the usual ProCo Rat sound. Turbo Rat is more aggresive, like using a rat with ceramic pickups instead of Alnico magnets. And Dirty Rat is like a Marshall JCM 2000 overdriven to where it's more of a metal sound. On the second channel the settings are "Vintage Rat", "Turbo Rat", and "Clean Rat". Clean rat is really really high end-ish. It makes my old Les Paul sound a little tinny, and that's hard to do. You can just turn the tone down and have it sound better, but it's still a little bit unusable. But all the other Rat sounds are great.

I used it on a gig the day after I got it. No way in the world I can see this thing messing up, or dynig on a gig without someone dropping a huge amount of weight on it, or having the power go out.

I play everything except rap. And I even do a little of that sometimes. It suits it all, I havn't seen or heard a genre that would make this pedal sound bad. If it were stolen I would buy another emidiately.

Very easy to use. Mine (like everyone's, I guess) comes without a manual, but no problem to find any sound you want.The fact is that you don't need a manual. There is always the ProCo website for suggested settings and stuff like that.

I use an Ibanez Musician, a Yamaha AES 620, Marshall JCM 2000 DSL, Boss GT-3; I bought the Deucetone mainly to use one of his channels right into the EXT OD/DS send/return of the GT-3 and it works amazing: you can switch off RAT ch 2 and add chorus, eq or delay at the same time with the CTL pedal of the GT-3. Of course the other channel of the rat goes into the GT-3 input. Like every RAT the Deuce works grat with effects.
I'm looking for my own sound. Well, honestly, the combination between any of the distortion types with the Turbo rat setting sounds a little bit harsh in the bottom end. My disappointment is that the Turbo RAT sounds harsh his own way. I already own a Turbo RAT, so i tested it. What a shame, my sound experiment failed due to the low quality, in my opinion, of the Turbo settings. I'm thinking to combine the Turbo I have with a separate Vintage RAT pedal.The vintage settings are excellent, and if you care only about that full Marshall sound, go for the Deuce, you can mix two Vintage rat at the same time and get what is closest sounding to a modern Marshall distortion ! As far as I'm concerned, I wasn't looking for a "Marshall in a box" kind of pedal because I obviously use my JCM 2000 for that.
Dirty rat can be interesting but Clean RAT is pretty useless unless you use it as a boost.
If you try to use an EQ with this pedal (like I do with my GT-3), you can obtain almost every distorted sound known to human beings. I mean Marshall and Recto kind of distortion, vintage and heavy fuzz. Experiment it!

The Turbo RAT I have is the sturdiest pedal ever. The same for the deuce. I have no experience about batteries life, I only know that Turbo battery lasts very long.

I have been playing for 10 years. As I said before, I'm looking for my ultimate tone. I play heavy rock. I think the Deuce suits every kind of rock. This one was the closest device I ever used to obtain "that" sond, but I'll keep experimenting with it. Anyway in my experience the Deucetone RAT is the most versatile distortion box on the market.

Pretty easy to use, unless you have two braincells that are constantly fighting...All sounds are usefull too.

If you like a gritty, transparent tone with plenty of bite this is the way to go.
I use this pedal through an ABY switch to put it on the front end of a modded 68 Fender Bassman and a Fargen AC 30 clone...I think Rats work great with non-master volume amps. It gives me Angus with more balls. The Pedal usually sounds great...be careful when the battery gets low, your sound will get very muddy. The filter really helps tremendously especially if you play all sorts of venues...it can help you dial in, or dial out the right amount of high end.
I give it a 9 because it can be harsh sounding at times, and it is still not the perfect tone that still eludes me...damn near close though

This pedal eats batteries, be sure you gig with an extra 9-volt...if you don't you're a clown anyway...
The pedal is made out of a heavy steel...the circuit seems a bit crammed into the pedal, so far so good, it has not given me any trouble except for sounding muddy when the battery was low.

I'll give it a ten, this pedal kicks ass, especially if you want to run two amps both with overdrive...I'd buy this pedal again because it utilizes two channels and not a lot of OD pedals do that...the convenience alone is worth and it sounds great...lots of useable tones.

Brainless operation. one thing though. It should have a right to left lay out like most other effects instead of left to right. no big deal, just seems backwards to me.

I play a PRS swamp ash through fender amps ('69 twin reverb, 2001 twin amp) with a number of other effects and i got this to replace my old vintage rat. I loved that, and now I have basically six rats in one box (two rats with 3 modes each is more accurate i guess) for little more than twice the price. I A/B'd the old vintage rat against the "vintage rat" mode of the deuce and they were indistiguishable, so that's good. It has great smoothness. The turbo rat mode has a gutsier sound, more aggresively voiced. The dirty rat is pretty raw. a looser sound than either the vintage or turbo setting. And the clean rat is probably the weakest one--hence the 9 rating. I don't use it much as it is very trebly and lacks decent dynamic response (i don't think that any rat has ever been applauded for it's superior dynamic sensativity however). I should point out that all of these modes are similar in that they are each minor variations on the distinctive rat sound. Since i knew i liked that sound, it was a no brainer. So make sure you like that basic sound first. i think of the deuce not as one bigger better rat, more highly evolved rat, but rather as a whole generation of little rats with greater genetic diversity...you pick the ones you like.

After several months, I like the deuce. There's a ton of sounds in there. I'm sure there's one for eveyone. However, there are a lot that I like. I play everything but metal, and I think the deuce has my distortion needs met (for now). There are better distortion pedals out there, but this one has a lot of variety, it's easy to use and it provides flexibility in terms of routing. You can you the two channels at separate points in your signal chain, or you can cascade them on into the other. both options are very useful. Another small complaint is that the footswitches are tough to push in and have a big click to them. this isn't a huge flaw, but it's noticeable compared to other pedals. it makes it hard to switch it while barefoot. all in all, what are my overall thoughts about the deuce...a triumph!!!

Well, all you have to do is turn a bunch of knobs. However, due to the three different modes on each channel, the possibilities are staggering!!! Plus you have the option to cascade the channels together. So in that respect, it's not really a plug and play kind of pedal. I;m still playing with it...but it's easy to dial in a killer sound fairly quickly.

Geez Louise!!!! This has gotta be the most kick ass overdrive/distortion box on the planet!! I'm running this thru an old Fender Bassman 100 head and Marshall 2x12 cab. Various Gibson and Jackson axes. Just playing around with some of the settings from the proco "Deucetone settings guide" on their website, and the sound out-Marshalls my Marshall!! Incredible crunch and smoldering low end. The key is you gotta run it into a good tube amp. The Bassman is perfect...and I would guess Hiwatts would work good, too. With Marshalls, you may want to use it more as a "boost" than in full distortion mode. With Boogies or Soldano's, you probably don't even need it...it will just muddy things up. But if you want a killer sound, and can't afford a vintage Marshall or Rectifier, find an old Fender and use this thing!

This box will pretty much cover all your overdrive/distortion needs. You can dial in mild, tube-screamer like overdrive, or set it to all out, balls to the wall raunch. It sounds unbelievable thru a good Tube head. You will not be disappointed.

No manual came with mine, but, come on. It's just two Rats in one, with a couple of added switches. I don't like how if you cascade the channels (they DO have two inputs and two outputs for stereo) the input is on the far left and the output is on the far right. And even though it is fairly simple to use, it takes a bit of tweaking to find two good usable sounds.
It has two footswitches, one for each channel. Same topside controls as other Rats.

Wow. Wowee-wow-wow. I use a Rick 330, Burns Bison and Marquee (RI's both) through a RI AC-30. Lots of good usable sounds (it just takes time). I have an early Rat 2 with no LED and both channels sound better, even to my bandmate's ears (yes, I know, very strange. Mostly they don't care or notice).
Let's see, in chan. A you have a slide switch in the back for Turbo Rat, Vintage Rat, and Dirty Rat (new sound. whatever.) and Chan. B has Turbo, Vintage and Clean Rat (very cool, more of a boost, but not transparent, you know? think low-mid boost). Sorry for all of the parentheses-es.
Turbo has more output, but vintage setting is the best in my opinion. Not much different from Dirty Rat. The distortion is familiar, compressed and juicy, but for some reason has much more low end than my old RAT 2. Big fat distortion, yay! However, the clean rat setting is seriously lacking in the lowend dept.
Regardless of its minor shortcomings or seemingly redundant features, this pedal is incredible.
Since it is actually two pedals, you can get three sounds altogehter. This sold me on it right away over other pedals that have a separate boost channel.

Now, listen here. From now on, I don't want to see any other pedals besides the Rat get a "10" in this category. Got it?

OK, I bought it for the name, novelty, sturdiness, etc. I planned on trying it out for a while (save that receipt, holmes) but decided to keep it after thirty minutes or so at practice. It's not just more versatile than my older Rat 2, it sounds better. And it's two of 'em. I bought mine at American Music in Seattle, but I don't know if they're available everywhere yet.
Oh yeah, and the fact that the two heavy duty switches are close enought to stomp with ONE FOOT makes it worth every penny of $175.
