Ease of Use : 4
Annoying sound quality. Kills any original guitar sound. Difficult to tweak an acceptable sound. The older stompboxes are more organic sounding than this rack effect unit

Sound Quality : 3
Quite noisy. Not usable without a noise reduction system. I play Strats and humbucker-equipped guitars. Both sound mushy through this unit.

Reliability : 3
The switches crapped out on me twice. I had to return it to the shop to get it fixed.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 3
I play Blues, Rock and Metal through Marshall amps. This unit is a toy - it tries to imitate a tube-driven sound - but it remains an effort. Only useable for living room practicing.

3 Knobs per side Gain,Fliter, Volume. Pretty easy to use and understand.

Sound Quality : 10
There are many pros that use this pedal and they keep on growing, with no endorsments of any kind I might add.I read that Joe Perry took a rat pedal pluged straight into the board for the recording of the re mixed "Walk This Way" with Run DMC,also Foo Fighters are RAT users, and the lists grows. The sound that I get is a really defined distortion.Comments that I have recieved on my sound is that it is a "Clean Distortion" you can hear all the strings in a full chord but it has the punch with the smooth distortion(almost overdrive sound with more edge)I used a Reissue Marshall Head that had no distortion in it just loud power.Boss pedals.chorus, delay, flange, octave,I had a well defined sound that could pull off any kind of style in the vein of Robin Trower,Jimi Hendrix,Stevie Ray Vaughn. So it goes like this Stratocaster + Rat Rack mount R2DU + Marshall=Dream Sound!!!

Reliability : 10
I have owned mine for 11 yrs or more nothing better

Never had a reason to contact the company

Here is the most important thing that the rack mount R2DU offers, besides the wonderful clean punchy distortion there is to offer,it lets me have a distortion setting for my rythms then when I solo it combines the 2nd rat for more volume and controlled distortion(just roll back the gain and filter then adjust more volume to your liking)then step on both to turn them off and you have your Amps clean sound. This is better then a EQ pedal or an overdrive because you have so much powerful gain and control over the 2nd rat as a LEAD BOOST.This has helped me in live gigs where the sound man does not know where to turn up the solos!Practices-when you go to play a solo and it is heard instead of it being weak and no defintion.Right now I am searching for a 2x12 clean Fender amp to get out there and play some blues of all style. One last word, out of all the equipment I have traded and sold over 11 some yrs THIS R2DU WILL STAY IN MY POSSESSION FOREVER!!!!

It's very easy to use. Three pots for each unit. Distortion (gain) Filter and Volume.

Sound Quality : 9
I'm using the RAT with my epiphone Les Paul standard (with seymour duncan pu's), a Fender Blues Junior amp.
It has a very nice tone, and I really like that you can have 2 individual settings. I use the A unit to produce a fat blusey sound (low gain), so that I can get the tone that I like at low amp volume. The B unit I've setup with more gain, producing a sound with heavy overdrive.

I play mostly blues, and for the kindda tone that I like, this unit is perfect. I don't know if they make these anymore, but if I lost it I would put some effort into finding another one to replace it.
I especially like that it's a double unit so you can have two seperate settings, and just switch them on and off with the foot switch. Before I got it I used a Carl Martin (East sound) Hot Drive'n Boost which is good too, but I like this one better, chords seems more muddy when using the Hot Drive'n Boost.

Very easy to get good sounds. Set your amp up how you like- run this unit in front of it, tweak the one or both sets of gain, filter, and volume. Play yer guitar.

Sound Quality : 8
Sound quality is an 8. This unit gives you 2 rats in a rack running in series. the footswitch has a switch for each rat so you can run both, a, or b. I run it into my Mesa Studio Preamp into a 50/50watt marshall 9000 series power amp. FX in loop of mesa are a Digitech dsp 128 set for different delays. Speaker is marshall 1922 stereo 2x12 cabinet w/celestion 75wx2. With both strats and gison style guitars, the rat unit is very pleasing. Running thru the clean of the preamp I can get a nice tubscreamer/super overdrive with just one rat on. With two on, you can get increased sustain, grit, and distortion. Very good thru the clean channel. Thru the dirty channel of the boogie - i set the boogies gain for less than 3. THis sound is nice and crunchy and very dynamic, by stepping on one of the rats set for a very mild overdrive but big volume boost, I finally have found the sound for me. Grind, sustain, detail, focus, and excellent harmonic content. With booth rats on running thru the boogie dirt channel, things do get fairly ugly, i recommend running only one rat thru any distortion channel, unless ugly is what you crave. There is a little noice added to the signal when gains are set high.

Reliability : 10
If anyone has ever had problems with a rackmounted distortion unit encased in thick, and i mean thick sheet metal, the rack itself must suck. I would absolutely gig w/o a backup.

Customer Support : 5
Unit is discontinued so no real support for this ine in particular, but it is still a rat, so they helped me with some sample settings. I give a 5 simly because this is discontinued

A major beneifit of this rack distortion unit has been overlooked. It has a hard bypass and eliminates cable runs. THis means when it is off, you original guitar signal is uneffected. I used to run my guitar with 20' of cable to a TS-808, boss superoverdrive, boss, hyperfuzz, then 20' more cable to the preamps. Major signal loss. With these 2 rats mounted directly into a rack and right on top of the preamp, there is only 4" of cable running from the R2DU to my preamps. I also bought a rack wireless which sits on top of the rats, so all together, i eliminated 40' feet of cable, three distortion pedals, and my signal ha s improved tenfold. Also- set up and tear down is much better with everything all in one box. tasty.

This is essentially 2 ProCo RAT's hooked together in a rack. There is a filter, distortion and volume knob for each gain stage (rat). It comes with a dual swith pedal for turning on the gain stages. Once you know how the filter knob affects the tone, it is very basic. The manual give some example settings, which is a pretty useless idea because it is so easy to dial in the exact tone you are looking for.

Sound Quality : 10
I play mostly hardcore and deathmetal with some alternative and rock and it couldn't be easier to geta great tone. With one gain stage up all the way it gives outa very dense fuzz. If you kick in the second gain stage about halfway as well, it give a grindy/thrashy sound. Turn up the filter controls and it smooths it out for a more metal zone kind of sound. Don't get me wrong, this is NOT JUST for high gain metal. Turn one distortion to 10 o'clock and filter to 1 or 2 o'clock and it gives you a great bluesy tube kind of sound. You can get almost any tone/sound possible out of this baby.

Reliability : 10
The R2DU has a very thick metal case, and the pedal is as solid as rock. I would bet ProCo has never had one break down.

Never delt with them, never will.

I went to the local music store today and tried out 5 or 6 pedals (i.e. Danelectro FabTone, MetalZone, Deathmetal, Grunge, even som $500+ preamps) and not one of them gives me the great sounds and versitility of this. If you see one, pick it up! You won't regret it!

Identical to RAT pedal only a 1-space rack mount unit with two channels A & B which can be used seperately or cascaded. Also comes with 20 ft. midi cable and foot switch. 3 knobs per side Distortion, Filter, and Volume, very simple. Manual is adequate for unit. It also comes with 9 Volt wall wart.

Sound Quality : 9
It sounds as good as the newer pedal a little noisy but not enough to be abtrusive. I have mine wired into a loop processor with the A channel set with just enough drive to start to break up, sounds great with my Twin, it really can get close to the Stevie Ray thing. The B channel I have set at about 75-80% Gain and the high freq. rolled off. I put it in front of compressor and graph, then through a harmonizer set at bypass (it does not color sound only gives it more fatness) with only reverb for effects. This gives me a great Allen Holdsworth sound through a Twin, but not through a Marshall. Certainly a different set of patches to be set up for Marshall or other high gain amps. A real usable distortion that does not wash when chording, one of the few best distortions other than a tube type.

Reliability : 10
Same as pedals, a tank.

No experience.

It's a must for any player, whether a pedal or rack version, original pedal is suppose to be best, I guess they are not using the same chip. Real musical not just for metal!
