Its very easy to get a good sound infact to easy hahahahah
You really dont need a manual for this like most guitar pedals (if you need a manual you dont need the pedal)......
The Proco Rat has been through a lot over the years but its still orignal as far as that goes.....

Sound Quality : 10
Yeah I can get Blackmore in this if you turn down the distortion knob you get something like Hornby Skewes like sounds as you turn it up you get Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and all the way with the violin sound is Yngwie Malmsteen sound very clean mellow distortion.....
All the sounds out of this Pedal are great I feel very one can find a position on the knob to be happy on this......
If cranked up there is a little noise but its not any big deal to worry about........ This things sounds so good you could just scream....I use a peavy delta blues with matched tubes 15" speaker...

Reliability : 10
Yes very dependable never gives up I love it......
I would use it on a gig without a back up in fact if gigging and I lost this pedal I would not go on.....I dont use anyother effects pedals this is it I would like to get an echo and thats about it.... not that I dont like other effects I feel in a live performance there is no need just play forget the crap.......

OK here is the story year ago I bought a Rat sold it for some stupid reason hahahahahha I think I got the Heavy Metal Pedal Boss for that anyway I have been a long time Proco fan always going back to the RAT..... then I saw a used Vintage Reissue Rat so I said I have to have that and I was happy again I think I paid $30 dollars for it..... Proco has been very nice to me since I am not really a customer anymore answer all my questions and very helpful thank you Proco.....Yes this is the hard part I was missing the old sound so I upgraded it myself I put in a lm308ah metal can chip for the opamp not it sounds orignal..........

Overall Rating : 10
I play hard rock, metal, blues this is a very good match I love this pedal......almost 40 years I have been playing....I play a american tele wired like a 53 with paper caps and noiseless pickups, Peavy delta blues, BSM hornby skewes c, and another treble booster, but I love my RAT, If lost or stolen yes I would have to replace it, Lastly
if you like the reissue dont change it the chip they have in there now is ok sounds very marshall like, but if you put in the lm308 metal can it will sound orignal like they used to..... Robert Keely and the rest use the RAT 2 to mod and thats why because it needs a complete overhall to get it to sound orignal but thats a waste just get the reissue change the chip all the rest is the same and I will add one more thing I think I will put in a switch to have silicon and germanium diodes so I can orignal and softer fuzz.....Last play with this pedal its very cool has all you favorite players in it not hendrix though hahahahahhahah need a fuzz face for that.......

very easy to use, just 3 knobs.

Sound Quality : 3
not pleased atall with the sound i got out of it. ive only had it for a few days & i cant get any good, cruncy distortion out of it. I use an Ibanez SZ520QM guitar & a Carlsbro 100w amp. This pedal is making my guitar sound like a messed up fuzzy bass. If anyone could give me advice to get a good crunch out of it please tell me.

Reliability : 10
Havnt ever gigged it. Make of solid steel though, built like a tank. I think it could survive a nuclear blast.

Customer Support : No Opinion
have not dealt with.

Overall Rating : 5
I play alot of music, mainly punk, hardcore punk & post hardcore, emo stuff. So far i would say this pedal DOES NOT work for it. It makes my guitar sound like a fuzzy base. my amp has better overdrive. Ive been playing guitar for 3 years now, i am only 17. & i have passed my Grade 5 in RGT guitar grades, there are 8 grades (8 being the best) so im no novice guitarist despite my age & how long i have been playing. If it were stolen i would not buy it again, im already mourning over my wasted money since i dont work. I dont like the way it is totally fuzzy & little crunch & distortion. it makes my guitar sound like a fuzzy base. Im gonna stick to boss & marshall pedals in the future. I think it might be good for people who like to play stuff like the darkness, & 80's heavy metal & rock. but not for my style of music.

Only 3 knobs pretty staight forward. One recommendation is to go on Pro Co's web sight. They have a settings guide for the new Duecetone, but several of them translate well over to the Vintage Rat and it gives some very good ideas for tone settings you may not have thought of or at least could help point you in the right direction towards the sound you are looking for.

Sound Quality : 10
I am using mine with a Gibson Les Paul Classic that is loaded with Burstbuckers 2 and 3, and a Dean select V that has a Gibson Burstbucker 3 in the bridge and a P-94 in the neck. The Volume pot for the bridge is a 1 meg (very cool if you want more gain if not roll it back). My amp is a Fender Champ (early 70's) that has been hot rodded beyond belief by David Allen at Allen Amplification (highly recommend you check him out). With this set up I can get great Rolling stones style raunch, Classic seventies rock tones and some really cool dirty blues sounds. I am not really a metal fan but if you were to run this set up through some kind of 2 x 12" cab I can't imagine not getting any sound you could ever dream up. You absolutely can't believe the flexibility in this pedal until you try it.

Reliability : 10
Bought it used for $50 and have never had a problem

Never needed them

I play Bluesy, Stoney style music and it does everything i need it to do. I am sure it could do more if my tastes ever change. I have been playing for 16 years and i have never had a better distortion unit. I've tried Boss, DOD, Ibanez, and even the Expandora. I am not bad mouthing any of the above especially the Expandora (Well maybe i'll bad mouth DOD), but the Rat is the best to my ears and you can find new ones at $75 to $95 all day long. Try finding a boutique pedal at that price. The Vintage Rat is simply the best bang for the buck. I will always own one even if this one gives out, I'll get a new one and have it shipped to me by Sonic Air so I don't have to live an extra minute with out it.

Simple: Three knobs - volume, filter (tone), distortion, but the filter gives the box a nice tonal complexity with more phase properties than bass/treble. Otherwise similer to a guitar's tone control. The unit is easy to use but takes a while to hone in on the perfect tone. I didn't get a manual but that's not a requirement for this thing.

Sound Quality : 9
This unit is comparable to a Tube Screamer in that it delivers more of an overdrive sound than distortion or fuzz. It is a great match for my amp - a Tech 21 Trademark 60. The amp, while providing plenty of overdrive, is not loaded up on the front end like say, a Boogie, so having the Ratt is a good option for adding a little more harmonic structure, particularly to single coils. It fattens things up without over saturating. I use a minable distortion setting. The unit is quiet and won't colour your sound, due to complete bypass circuitry. The Ratt is also somewhat unique in that nothing else I've heard sounds quite like it. It is very musical and doesn't destroy picking dynamics. Great for boosting the amp's overdrive or on it's on through a cleaner setting. As a "distortion" pedal, it's the best I've had.

Reliability : 10
Probably the heaviest duty stomp thang around. Could be used as a weopon. The knobs are dangeriously exposed but they are solid as it gets with a nice secure feel about them. Battery replacement is simple (one screw) and it will last longer than in most other effects pedals. High marks for switch and jacks as well. I've had this unit since 1985 and have had no problems.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never needed them, don't intend to.

Overall Rating : 10
Best pedel of it's type I've used, though not far and away better than some of the noteable others. Great for the blues and fusion that I play, but would certainly be a winner at any music requiring a jolt of overdrive or a touch of harmonic enhancement. If it died or were stolen I'd get another the next day. It will enhance any rig are even make one in the right situation, that's why so many pros use them. With my particular rig, my Ratt has become a mainstay. My only complaint is that it has no LED. But then it is one of the older ones. Otherwise I highly recommend it, at least as a must try.

3 knobs very easy to use. if the filter knob is turned clockwise it will add more bass to your sound if turned counter clockwise it will be clear

Sound Quality : 10
I have a small amp but soon getting a half stack right now i use a fender frontman 25 nothing big just 2jam on. I was looking for a different sound then what i had (BOSS BLUES DRVER)and i tried the rat in the store and fell in love with it. Its so much bettet than a big muff or a boss metal zone. It has that sound ive been searching for that pinchy crunch sound almost a mix bewteen AC/DC and Van halen. The sound on the rat is very warm and i can play for hours on it. Ive been a sucker for boss pedals for about a while but when i herd this badboy i realized that boss distortion sucks compared to this.

Reliability : 4
Yes i can depend on it but its kinda or fragile. if you take of the rat it will take care of you. I put all my pedals in a padded bag so they dont get messed up

Customer Support : No Opinion
never delt with pro co

Overall Rating : 10
overall its the best dam distortion on the market . its sound is unlike any other distortion i ever herd . it also glows in the dark!! witch is so cool! but the main thing is the sound and it gives you that low beefey or high pinching sound. You can adjust this pedal for your needs no matter what you play Metal,Classic,Noise Rock and even punk (punk sucks) you can sound like Black sabboth to johnny greenwood of radiohead to the screetching sound of david gilmours tone on the wall cd. This pedal kicks ASS!!
