Being the Rockman RW-1 is a wah-wah pedal, ease of use can be described as very simple. It only takes a few minutes to get the feel of most any wah, and this includes the RW-1. However, it may take a lifetime to learn to use the RW-1 (or any wah) well.

The RW-1 has a single red LED to indicate on/off for the wah effect. I have read another review where the author stated he wished his RW-1 required more foot pressure to turn the wah effect on/off. My pedal has two thick rubber spacers on the bottom of the rocker that requires using considerable pressure to cause the unit to turn on or off. I like this because there is little, if any, chance of inadvertantly switching the wah effect at the wrong time.

The RW-1 can be powered by a 9v battery or an AC adapter.

I bought my RW-1 used (Ebay). It did not include a manual.

Sound Quality : 10
The RW-1 has an absolutely excellent sound quality. I play a Peavey Wolfgang and a Gibson Les Paul through the RW-1 and into a Peavey Bandit (solid state, single 12"). Both sound nice. I have also played a Heritage 535 (similar to a Gibson ES-335 semi-hollow) through the RW-1. It's sound was excellent as well.

When the wah effect is off, sound quality/tone is not lost or altered.

You should never get any type of unwanted noise when using this pedal. It has no pot, instead utilizing optic technology. I cannot explain optic technology, but I know enough that it makes this the quietest wah I have ever used.

As for using additional effects when operating the RW-1, the few I have used (and used for only a few minutes) were not affected in the sense that their tone was not altered by the RW-1.

Reliability : 10
The RW-1 has proven to be completely reliable. I do not play professionally, but this pedal, housed completely in metal (as opposed to plastic), is built for rugged use.

Customer Support : 10
Positively the best! Dunlop has always helped me whenever I needed information or parts for their products. In the last few days, I called to purchase an AC adapter for my RW-1, and I'm glad I did (see "*" in overall rating).

Overall Rating : 10
I play heavy metal to lite rock (Moody Blues-type). The RW-1 works well with all styles.

The RW-1 has a rather large sweep when compared to other wah pedals, a feature I like.

The RW-1 makes playing that much more enjoyable, at least for me.

My Rockman RW-1 wah-wah pedal was NOT made by Tom Scholz/SR & D (Scholz Research & Development, a corporation owned by Scholz when he was creating Rockman amps and other high-quality equipment). Instead, it is/was made by Dunlop Manufacturing (www.jimdunlop.com). Dunlop had purchased the Rockman name from Scholz some years back, and they marketed the RW-1 with the name "Rockman" on it. I have watched some auctions on Ebay for the RW-1, and a few of the sellers made their auction "sound" as if they were offering a Tom Scholz product. Maybe Scholz/SR & D did produce a wah under the model name RW-1. This I do not know. What I do know is that my pedal is a high quality pedal, built by a reputable firm that backs it and ALL their other equipment with the kind of support other firms only dream of having.

*Dunlop (1-800-722-3434) assisted me in the recent past after I had purchased an X-100 practice amp (on Ebay). They were very helpful in answering my questions. I also called them regarding the RW-1. It was to inquire as to what AC adapter the RW-1 required. Now this is important; Although the RW-1 has "9 volt DC" printed next to the jack for the AC plug, it requires a 12 volt adapter. Dunlop mailed me the "ECB-05" model AC adapter for my RW-1 . After receiving the adapter, I called them back to make sure I wasn't about to fry my pedal and in turn burn down my house. Dunlop assured me the "ECB-05" was the correct adapter. And just so you know, I have used the adapter/pedal together now for several hours, and I have yet to smell anything burning..!

I do not know if Dunlop is producing the RW-1 at present. They are kind of rare, making only occasional appearances on Ebay. I am particular to Tom Scholz/SR & D products, and I have attended numerous guitar shows in Cleveland, Toledo and Detroit in search of their equipment. I have yet to see a Rockman RW-1 pedal for sale (SR & D or Dunlop manufactured).

If you are a Scholz/SR & D purist, and about to make an offer for an RW-1 sight unseen, do yourself a favor and ask who actually made the pedal. My opinion is whoever made the thing, Scholz or Dunlop, made ir right, and you come out on top.

To get a good sound out of any wah you need to know how what it is capable of doing. It brought no manual but what would you need one for?My unit is completely stock and has never been opened. My girlfriend bought for me on E-bay and the thing looks like it just rolled off the manufacturing line. The guy that my girlfriend bought it from had never used it and it came in the original box which of course I have.

Sound Quality : 10
Basically my setup is very simple. I have an Ibanez Artist Reissue with an EMG-81(bridge) and an EMG-85(neck) into a Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde into my Rockman WAH and into my 15 watt solid state Marshall. The effects that I do have I've read up on to make sure that they don't affect my tone. I can sort of get a distortion simmilar to Metallica's Master of Puppets. It has no noise at all and does not affect your tone when it is off. There is no pot because the pedal uses optic technology.

Reliability : 10
I can depend on it 100% without a backup. I don't gig yet but when I do I know it will deliver the goods. The shell is metal all the way around including the bottom, unlike other wahs which have a cheap thin piece of plastic or aluminum.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Well unfortunately Tom Scholz closed Scholz Research & Development(S R&D) on December 31, 1995, and sold all the patents to Jim Dunlop. Thank goodness that Dunlop repairs Rockman equipment.

Overall Rating : 10
I play Rock, from the softest to the hardest and this wah suits me well. If someone stole it from me I would definitely cry because the pedal has sentimental value to me. I love the fact that the operation is totally quiet and it does not destroy my tone. My four favorite things about it are:1) the warmeth of the pedal, 2) the amount of pedal travel, 3) the quietness and 4) how the placement of the effects chain makes it sound like a totally different machine.

It's a wah wah pedal. You don't need to be a college graduate to operate one of these.

Sound Quality : 10
This was the first pedal i baught... I've used it with a bad Cort strat copy, Epiphone G310 SG copy, ESP H100, ESP MH100, Danelectro U2, Fender Strat, and a Gibson Les Paul. Sounds very nice with all of them. I baught this pedal without knowing anything about wah wah's at all, it was basically the first one I saw. I'm pretty glad I ended up with it though, it has a HUGE sweep, it's way over the top. Goes way lower and way higher than the crybaby's that i've used.

Reliability : 6
It has it's problems.
1) It's battery cover is just a crappy little pice of soft plastic that is getting kindof torn up. The wires going from the battery connecter to the board sort of flop around and if you aren't careful you'll pinch them when you close up the battery compartment. I took it apart and taped them down so they didn't do that anymore.
2) It's starting to cut out. It seems that, a lot of times, if i'm not applying fairly heavy pressure to the pedal with my foot, that the pedal doesn't respond. It just sounds like it's stuck in the exact middle possition. This didn't start until i'd had it for about a year and a half.

The pedal sounds really great for whatever you're playing... I absolutely love the sound it gets, I just don't like the fact that it only works sometimes.

Very easy. Has an LED to let you know it's on... though my Morley did, my Vox didn't which was kinda annoying. One thing I don't like about operating this unit is that the on/off button is too easily triggered when sweeping. I'd prefer having to stomp hard on it (like my Vox) than have it inadvertantly turn off. My Morley BWV didn't have that problem because it had a separate on/off switch.

Sound Quality : 10
I recently had this thing set up with a Morley wah and a Vox wah so that I could hear the difference and keep the one I liked best. I just left a review for the Vox 847 which I liked, but the Rockman is just as warm as the Vox yet has WAY more sweeping range to it. The Morley BWV was too tinny sounding for my taste.

Reliability : 10
Built like a tank and uses optical sensing technology so you don't need to worry about replacing pots.

Rockman was sold to Dunlop several years ago. Doubt they support Rockman stuff anymore.

Overall Rating : 10
I play classic & hard Rock like Boston and Triumph. Been playing over 10 years and I love this thing. I purchased one a couple of years ago from Fred's Music in PA and they sent me the Rockman Volume pedal instead. When they attempted to rectify the situation, they screwed up again and so did UPS. Sick and tired of sheer incompetance, I gave up and kept my Rockman Volume pedal (still in the box)... until recently I acquired a used Rockman Wah ... was worth the wait. It's a keeper.

Uhhh, stpe on it and rock your foot. It's not that hard. It's really easy, actually.Alot easier than my crybaby is to. YOu dont have to stomp on it like a mad man to get it on. The switch is easily pressed.
A handly little LED comes on when teh effect is activated. The entire thing is well thoguth out, even for a wah pedal. It's easy to get to the battery compartment w/ no tools. It didn't come w/ a manual. Then again, if you need a manual for a wah pedal, better rethink your guitar playing;)

Sound Quality : 10
I use this w/ Gibson guitars and Fender amps. One thing I really really dig about this: It doesnt suck *ANY* tone at ALL when it's off. YOu honest to the Lord can't tell!!! Like most other effects, this enhances noise, but not too bad. I mean, if ya got the amp cranked and distortion going, what do you expect? To hear a pin drop? You can't hear noise until you stop playing. This sucker is built by a guitarist and you know it.It's like he sat down w/me and asked what I wanted ina wah. I couldn't have designed it better myself!!! There's no pot or anyhtiung to go scratchy and noisy on ya.One note. The wah is not a particularly "Vocal" wah. It has a character all it's own. But it's not a bad character.Just a different one. A GOOD one I think. You can play chords with it all the way back (Bass end), and they still maintain a sparkle. They don't get compressed and all distorted like w/ my crybaby. My crybaby sounds like someone coughing up a Lougee(sp?).
It doesn't ahve the trebly harshness of my crybaby either. It still gets great top range 100%, but it's not harsh, ice-pick in ear harshness that I thought was a fact of life w/my crybaby. Seriously: They say that analog is 100000000 times better than digital. This sucker is digital, and it is 100000000000000000000000000 times warmer than my crybaby. Tom Scholtz is the man, I wish Dunlop would pull their heads out of their asses and start making Rockman stuff again. I still look for the rack gear. It's the greatest tone in the world, I think.

Reliability : No Opinion
I have no opinion because I haven't had it long enough to test it's reliability. It's built out of steel, and seems really solid. Think Charlie Stringer. The battery hasn't crapped out on me yet, so I can bet that it would work good at a gig. I"m only 17, so I dont gig. But hey, give me 3 years......;)

Customer Support : No Opinion
LOL, uh, Rockman closed like 7 years ago? And Dunlop woiuld probably give me the finger if I needed parts (" Maybe if all the rockman stuff breaks and cant be fixed, then maybe they'll forget how much our stuff sucks!!!!!!!)

Overall Rating : 10
This wah is a dream come true for me. For those of you who have searched for the sound of "me", you know what it feels like to finally get it.I always thoguht it was my OD pedal that was messing me around, now I know it was the wah. This complements my set-ups tone PERFECTLY.
I'm lucky I got it though. I found it on the internet, some place in Illinois had a couple of tehses suckers new hangin around. Deerfieldmusic.com? These are not just bang for the buck, I bet these could kick ANY wah's ass!! And cmon, for $60, that will barely get you a cheap crybaby!!!! I love this thing, if it ever got broke,or stolen,
I would cry for weeks and tehn find anotehr one, if anyone would let theirs go..Not likely, thoguh!!;)Like I said, if you're copying sounds, the crybaby is a good choice.Well, I hate to bash it too much, it is a good wah, but it's just dog shit compared to this one. This wah will help you find the "Me" tone you've been craving. Some may "Well what about parts?" Well, I'll tell ya, just lone me you're '62 strat and your 66 Reverb combo;) Thses sucker are THE wah, and for $60 to my door, you cant lose!!!!!!
