Very easy to use. Just adjust the sliders until it sounds the way you want. The sliders are actually way better than knobs for real time manipulating. You can almost play the thing like an instrument. The right and left echos are automatically out of sync for some reason. I wish that you could change this feature, but I have learned to live with it.

this is merely a response to several reviews that considered this unit to be "over-hyped". this unit excels at "subtlety" (much like it's sister unit the Stereo Chorus). there are no Elvis era "slapbacks" or pounding "replicant" echoes here. one slider controls "Echo Time" and it is "staggered" between the left and right channels. while this may seem to be a limitation (at first) I feel that it adds a wonderful bit of organic "movement" to the echo. the repeats seem to "move" or "drift" slightly in space. i also own an Ibanez AD202 and UE405 and several Yamaha analog delays. i love all of them..but there is something unique about THIS particular unit. when coupled with the matching Stereo Chorus the Rockman Stereo Echo makes my guitar emit the most unearthly (yet organic) panoramic widescreen sweetness imagineable. i love this unit. if you want modulation and slapback and other results LOOK ELSEWHERE. if you want subtle depth and dimension....look at the Rockman Stereo Echo.

It's not hard to figure out but it's not that versatile. There's only one slider to set BOTH delays. The manufacturer presumes that their hard-wired relationship between the left and right channels is the only one you'll ever want. I felt very trapped immediately. Maybe I was unrealistically expecting two separate delay units in one box.

I'm in complete agreement with the reviewer before me. I was drawn in by the hype and was sorely disappointed. I love the Rockman Stereo Chorus but the Stereo Echo doesn't hold a candle to the Ibanez AD202. This is obviously my subjective opinion but I couldn't hear what people find so special about this unit. I want to buy up the world's AD202's and wait for them to appreciate to $600.

You might love this unit. It's just not for me.
I'm into anything creative and original. I play through a V4, 147 and a JCM800. I own a '71 Les Paul, and lots of other guitars in rotation, but my main guitar is actually a Memphis copy of a Les Paul Junior Special, very similar to the 2-pickup Univox version, which I also like very much. I mod most of my pedals other than my stock Home Brew Germacide.

This unit is a total hype, and I can't believe I fell for it. I bought it for its stereo option and I sold my Ibanez AD202 (idiot), I figured it would work well with my Marshall Jmp-1's stereo effect loop (I also use a Maxon AD9 in front of the preamp which is amazing. It's just a really cheesy 80s sounding delay and in no way comparable to Ibanez/Maxon BBD delays even though it uses similar BBD chips. I believe the people praising the unit here are just trying to drive up the prices on Ebay. I hope I'll be lucky enough to find another AD202, and when I do get it, I'm never parting with it again.

If you're looking for a Boston type sound this delay unit might be for you, it just has that character about it. Other than that, it will be really difficult to incorporate it into your own unique sound/setup. The only thing I like about it is its stereo inputs. I've been trying forever to put together an all analog rackmount stereo setup and I finally thought this is it, but the unit was a total disappointment.

Super easy. Delay time and Feedback are your main controls. Have a choice of stereo mix via 3 slider switch, and echo volume for each channel.
There is a bypass 1/4" jack on back to remotely bypass the unit in a rack setup. Can use a midi octopus or footswitch.

This thing sounds so sweet. Warm and glowy delay. Tweeaking the feeback and delay times range from simple slapback, to a pseudo reverb, to full-on space-like echo. Always sounds good no matter how I yank the settings around.
I use this with a marshall preamp, also have a rockman sustainor, banks of eq (2 rockman eq units and digitech midi programable eq... it's a bit overkill), rockman stereo chorus, rockman midi octopus to control it all, into 4channel mixer, then into carvin and marshall stereo poweramps. Also use a rackmounted rockman x100.
This is used both live and in studio. Mostly for studio because the thing sounds SOooooooo good. I am nervous about taking it outside the shop!!!

I have no doubt that this thing will last as long as there is power in the outlet. Would I gig without a backup? Yes and no. Yes, because I know this will last forever. No, because they are getting harder to come by, and fear for it getting ripped off, so I am reluctant to gig with it.

I play all kinds for almost 20 years. From funk to fusion, to reggae and ska-jazz and your garden variety of pop metal influenced stuff.
I won't talk about this thing being stolen... it would be bad.
I love the shimmering, swirly tones I get with this... like a wash of sound. With a dynacomp, a solidstate marshall preamp, a rockman stereo chorus unit, this stereo delay, 2 cabs, and out of phase single coil tones, I get some of the BEST clean sounds. Andy Summers and Gilmour can eat their heart out. I kid you not, it's that good. After trying lots of digital crap, I swear by an all analog pipeline. Sure it can be a tad noisier, but now I find VST plugins which are used to add pops and AC current noise to sterile digital tones. Talk about coming full circle... but they don't add the warmth. I know people are saying this and that about warmth, but this is the real deal. Digital effects always sound metallic and grainy by comparison. Sure they are sharper, and depending how you mix, you might not ever be able to tell. But I'm a believer now. Digital is only good for controlling analog equipment and final mix down in a program like cubase. Digital is not good for creating or capturing sound.
Overall, you will not be able to find a better sounding delay unit. There might be other analog units that sound just as good, but I will put my neck out and say they are probably not better.

Completely intuitive once you're hooked up. This is made for old 60's guys who pulled long on the bong. If you have fingers, eyes and ears you can figure it out. Brain is optional.
Having said that, there are some technical tweaks that take time. Understanding input gain, the subtleties of pan select, and setting the L/R echo volumes and WHY they work so well are explained in techno detail in the manual, which can be accessed on www.rockman-central.com. But again, this comes intuitively once you're in the woodshed. I'm only giving it a 9 because it's not as simple as an old stompbox, but the sound....oiyh

Hands down the finest analog echo I've ever heard or used. There is nothing like it for warmth, spacious ambience, and subtle 'floatiness'. It demands attention, and can almost bring you to tears. Basically I concur with most of what's been said before.
However, I did notice a bit of distortion and gainy dirt at very loud volume, contrary to what somebody said about ultra clean. But maybe that's part of the analog warmth...

I should have bought this years ago. It can add such majesty and depth to a solo, and warmth and beauty to chord work. It's durable and user-friendly.
I've been playing for 35 years and feel like I've stumbled onto holy ground. I'd play barefoot if my old Traynor wouldn't electrocute me.
I mainly use a g&l legacy with Fralin p'ups, or my beloved 335, into a McIntyre Stereo 30 watt Tradition with t 2-10's and stereo tubed fx loops. The amp loves this effect. I also use the Rockman chorus in front of the echo in a Rockman rack. Together they take you to the very vestibule of heaven itself. Sometimes I put a George Dennis wah/volume and an Option 5 overdrive pedal in front. But that's gravy.
I play mainly blues, fusion, classic rock, reggae. This thing makes anything sound better and FEEL better. It takes you to the best places musically and makes you want to play more. I catch myself phrasing and leaning in totally new ways. Who could ask for more than that from a 15 year old black and blue box of metal and wires?

It's a Rockman...anybody can use it ! Although I got it used (on Ebay) without the owner's manual, you don't need the manual to understand the various controls. It's very user-friendly and takes about one minute for you to fully grasp the working of this unit.
The really cool feature is the stereo inputs and outputs; you can use on or two inputs, and you still have a stereo imaging at the outputs.
By pluging into the left input, and by putting a dummy 1/4" plug in the right input, the right output becomes "wet signal" only. You must ajust the "PAN SELECT" switch at the middle position.

This unit is so quiet (for an analog echo). There is no noise added whatsoever, the processed effect has no distortion of any kind and the echoes are clean. We're talking FAT analog sound here. They don't make this technology anymore.
Some companies will try to fool you into thinking their pedals or racks are analog, but they're not. I've actually checked a few ones, and it's a digital circuit with an eq at the end to simulate the loss of high frequencies associated with analog circuitry.
Not this one ! Nothing comes close to its richness and magic; this is true analog circuitry. A must have (if you can find one).
Althougt the rockman sound of the Sustainor or Distortion Generator may not be my cup of tea, the Stereo Echo is in fact, great (along with the Stereo Chorus). What's very interesting is how quiet it is.
A maximum of 500ms of delay may seem short, but actually, it's not. This unit also performs great when wanting some 1950's type slap-back.
You should try it on vocals.

It's built to last. After having a look inside and examining the guts of this unit (I'm an electronic technician), this is how any piece of electronic equipment SHOULD be built. I own other rockman racks (since the late 80's) and not once has any one of them failed on me.
It's trustworthy and needs no maintenance, except for the usual contact cleaner on the switches and faders once every two years or so.
Cleaning the front panel is also very easy: you take out four screws (on the panel), and then just use soapy water to clean it.
The electronics are also reassuring: all the parts inside are standart, rugged and easy to find components (should you need to do a repair. I, for one, never had to).

The legendary sound in a half-rack format. This unit will adapt itself when connected to different equipment from different companies (sound level wise).
An analog echoe may not be for everybody, due to shorter delay times (compared to digital delays) and no delay "hold" function. It is still a classic sound that cannot be duplicated with digital circuitry. I've seen a few companies try and all of them failed (see "SOUND QUALITY" above).
One feature may seem a bit odd: 75ms-300ms of delay on the left channel and 125ms-500ms on the right channel. There is a reason for this difference: The echoes will bounce left and right without ever interfering with each others (because of the difference in time delay). Somehow, it just works right.
I'm keeping all my Rockmans forever, as these also may turn into vintage collectible pieces of gear.
I give this unit two thumbs up, way up. I've been playing for 22 years, and I've seen my share of effects. A rockman is a great addition to any rig, whether you play guitar, bass, keyboard...
If you can find one, get it ASAP. These babies are going fast and they don't make this kind of rack anymore.

Not a noisey unit, but I do have complaints. Every one who rates this never says anything bad, and lets face it, everything lacks somewhere. The biggest problem is with the outputs. This unit is made to run in series, hence the stereo inputs. If you run effects in parellel in the send of a line mixer this unit is a problem. There is no way to remove the dry signal at the outputs in a parrelel setup, which leads to unity gain problems when the effect is engaged. If it had a seperate dry output, you could not connect it and blend the beautiful sound og the echo with the original dry signal from your guitar. I'm surprised it doesn't incorporate this because I have a stereo chorus/ Delay unit that has a seperate wet and dry output. Si it forces you to use it in series which leads to another problem. The bypass switch is functional at the output stage rather than the input stage, which means the echo doesn't trail off all the way. That's why input muting in a parallel set up is so organic. If these problems could be fixed this would without a doubt be one of the greatest analog delays ever produced. Great sound.

This is easy to understand. I didn't get a manual with this, but it is so easy to use that you don't need one. It has an input jack for mono or stereo (L & R) and it has the same setup for output, so you can run it in STEREO IN/OUT MONO IN/STEREO OUT MOMO IN/OUT. It will drive a line input or an amp. It's very versatile and it is dead quiet on all settings. Even running a noisy signal nto it, it seems to quiet it down some. The input has a preamp and you can adjust the amount of gain. There are sliders for delay time, repeats and effect level for L&R channels. Connections are easy, setting it up for a great sound is easy. It's very easy to figure it out.

I bought this for a recording studio setup. It is great for that. It has three settings for panning the sound in stereo and it is great for running a rhythm track down the edges of a stereo image. It works great with my other gear, which is an ART SGX 2000 and a Carvin Quad X. I don't use the ART for the preamp, just for the effects. The Carvin is awesome. Using the ROCKMAN in the stereo loop of the SGX gives me the ability to delay the time based effects in a way that is hard to describe. It's like I can get the chorus, flange, phasor and even delay to swirl in a 360 degree arc, within the soundfield. I've heard lots of stories about ROCKMAN echo units being in the mixdown paths of a lot of famous guitar players and I can see why. This is an amazing unit. I am using a 70's Les Paul and a Mexican Strat , mostly. I've played a ES 335 through it too. It doesn't change the sound of the instrument at all. For slapback in stereo, this is the bomb!
As far as live performance is concerned, you can hook anything to it in front of an amp or in a loop. Either way it sounds great. I've played it in front of a Hot Rod Deville and a Pro Jr. Performed flawlessly, very quiet. It's been in the loop of the Carvin and the ART units. No problems at all.

I've only had it for two months. I've used it a lot and have had it "on" for hours and hours at a time. It doesn't get hot or anything. There is an LED that blinks to the tempo of one channel's delay, which is a cool feature and it has a "clipping" LED. There doesn't seem to be a lot of complicated stuff to go wron, really. Everything seems to be built right. I think I would gig w/o a backup. Mostly, it's going to stay home, though.

I've owned echoplex machines and digital delays but nothing does what this thing does. If you read the other reviews, you'll see that there really is something about these things that can't be quantified, but you know it when you hear it. Like a lot of players, I keep my eyes open for certain pieces of gear and I felt lucky when I came across this for $200. I got it for $170.00, plus a Metal Zone pedal, which I won in a BOSS guitar player contest at a music store clinic, and never really used. I will keep looking for these and I'd buy another one for $200 if I find one. The guy who sold it to me said he paid $70 for it in the mid-80s, so the stock is on the rise. I love how it sounds and I love the "easy to use" factor. These are great units. I highly recommend it.

Very easy to use. It's NOT a programable unit. It has sliders for effect level, delay time and repeat. The front end has a gain circuit to ensure the integrity of the input signal's level and there is a circuit that switches between three types of ech effects, a w-i-d-e soundfield split, with signal and delay running hard left/right, and an effect that runs the original down the center with the delayed signals panned hard left/right, and finally...a choice to have the dry on the left and the delay on the right. It's really easy to get K K K KILLER sounds from this thing. Satch uses one and he's played a couple of nice riffs in his day, y'know? He's probably not as good of a player as you are, but hey...keep practicing, Joe. By the way, it plugs into the wall with its own A/C cord. No cheap transformer/wall warts for the finest delay ever made on planet earth. Problems? Yeah, I have to work for a living and I can't play through it 24/7/365, y'know?

There are all the other delay units ever made and then there is the Rocman Stereo Echo. What else can I say? It is simply the BEST delay unit-tape or otherwise-ever made for guitar. Once you hear one you'll NEVER be satisfied with Echoplex, Chandler, Lexicon....whatever. ROCKMAN STEREO ECHO...There is no substitute. ALL others pale in significance. To top it off, you will get the BEST sounding delay you ever heard in just seconds, without having to program anything. It is the holy grail of delay units. It rolls off the top end of the delayed note as it diffuses away; it bounces in stereo but NEVER bounces into the notes being played. It fades out and sounds like an Echoplex wishes it sounded like. I rate it a 10000000000. Nothing else comes remotely close. If I were to draw an analogy between the Rockman and the next best delay unit in the world, costing thousands more, the Rockman would be a Ferarri; the next best thing is one rusted roller skate, without wheels. It is perfect. If God played guitar, He would play through one of these. Did I mention that this thing sounds GOOD?

Find one and buy it. It's just that doggone simple, folks! I would not trade it for ANY piece of "comparable" gear. I bought it twenty years ago and I use it every day, or nearly. For delay, it totally blows away everything else. There is nothing else like it-at any price, anywhere. It will turn your pristine, 100% original Echoplex into a boat anchor. Have used this unit in the loop of many amps such as Marshall,Boogie Fender and others.
Tube or solid state it does em' all justice. Run many guitars through it also. Strat, PRS CE Bolt-on, Les Paul Deluxe with mini humbuckers,
Ibanez 540 "frankenstein", Gibson Flying V, and some acoustic electrics. The Stereo Echo would make a warp neck Kay rock.I swear this thing can produce more aural hallucinations than a sackfull of liberty caps.I can get huge emotive solos like David Gilmour or Neal Schon. Or chopped up arppegiated tones like U2's the Edge. And even shorter slapback for that "hey baby" Scotty Moore Elvis kinda stuff. From the squeakiest clean tones to the heaviest cookie monster metal grind this will swallow it whole and spit it out sounding like it went in and in the case of solid state amps it even adds a little warmth. A good thing.Whatever the amp or guitar it will blend right in very nicely. I also have all the Rockmodules racked up and of course it sounds right at home with its companion modules. Even running in tandem with the XPR and other brands of rack gear it has never let me down. Turning straight digital signals into something smoother and more digestable.

and people need to know that they will service and refurbish all Rockman gear. And they do it well. For not a whole lot of money. So if you spill beer into your rockmodule and it sizzles...get another beer.
Then send it to Dunlop and they will fix it.

I am a legend in my own living room. Playing many styles of rock, blues, southern rock, classic rock, hard rock, metal, pop metal, power pop,and of course AC/DC.This piece lends itself to almost everything I play. But Strangely enough you won't need it for AC/DC.I have been playing guitar since 1978 when I first heard Rush.I own many stompboxes and other rack gear and no other echo or delay unit approaches the all around sweetness of the Stereo Echo.Almost any sort of ambience can be achieved. Truly an instrument unto itself. Granted there are other units out there like the Chandler stereo echo and echoplex tape delays but for something that regularly appears on Ebay for an almost reasonable price you cannot go wrong here. One of Tom Scholz's finest creations. Anybody got a Scholz Programmable EQ they want to sell me. I can dream,Can't I? :-)

This product like most scholz products are very easy. Plug in the input and out the output. Changing feedback time and delay time is just adjusting your sliders. Changing your delay volume is really easy to, it is just done with the slider.

Now, I have used scholz rockman products in the past and have been very happy, but this unit takes the cake. I thought that most of the things said about this unit must have been hype, but they were very true when i actually sat and used the unit.
I am using this unit in conjection with a rockman stereo chorus, a korg a2/a3 multi-fx unit, a marshall blues breaker pedal and a Mesa Boogie Tremoverb amplifier. Everything goes in the effects loop except the marshall blues breaker which goes infront of the amp. All the dirty and clean stuff is the Mesa amp and the marshall blues breaker for inbetween clean and dirty sounds.
The unit is very quiet and has stereo inputs and ouputs. You can run the unit in mono though. It also has a bypass footswitch on the back. The delay can go up to 500ms and the volume for the delays are both adjustable. Feedback can go forever and the gain is variable to match your output of your guitar/amplifier.
The unit is surprisingly quiet (I don't think the scholz distoriton units are overly quiet). The sound is constant and is very close to an echoplex. All the delays are analog and sound very anolog.
You can get the bostonish tones, but the unit is very flexiable, i don't find that it pushes you into a boston direction like rockmans distortion units do at times.
The delays sound very compatible with both clean and dirty sounds.

Haven't had it long, but like most scholz units I expect it to last for a long time. The only thing that I do notice on almost all rockman units that i have had is that the jacks and some of the screws can get rusty. I usually unscrew mine and give it a blast of wd40 on some paper towel and rub off the oxidation. I find that units I have bought from California and the west coast show this quite often. Scholz Rockman units are fairly easily constructed, so pulling three screws out to fix something that is very well laid out shouldn't be a problem if it arises.

Not, around anymore. They were bought by dunlop who completely dropped the ball on marketing and manufactoring their products.

I play mostly classic and modern rock. I am a very versitle player, this unit is very flexiable, but it does require playing around with. Don't be disappointed because it doesn't weigh or is as large as other high valued delay units. It is a killer unit. I have been playing for about 10 years and have seen many different pieces of my setup come and go, and this one will be staying for sometime.
Okay gripe time. The thing I hate, I HATE, about all Scholz Rockman rockmodules is that they do not have a true bypass. The switch just switches from the output of the device to the input causing a load to be placed, even when the unit is unswitched. Like I like the unit but sometimes I do play with it off ya know. I also wish it had another variable time that could be switched back and forth. But I can just A/B between the two stereo channels and use one for long and one for short to get two different sounds from it.
The unit does make you want to play boston riffs at times, but allows you to flow into anything where a delay sounds good. U2ish stuff sounds pretty neat with it too.
If it was stolen I would certainly search, like I did for 8 months before I bought this one.

Dunlop bought Scholz R&D; I called them about getting a Rockman EQ and rack adapters, but they just tried to sell me optical pedals.

The Rockman Stereo Echo unit is a VERY underrated piece of equipment. It is very easy to use and capable of acheiveing many speeds of delayed sounds. This is a "RockModule" which is a 1/2 space rack-sized unit that is meant to be place in an amplifier's effects loop. Tom Scholz' Rockman line of effects are incredibly flexible in sound and practically indestructible in physical design. The manual is well-written, (As is ALL Rockman manuals I've seen) and it is incredibly simple to dial-up desired sounds.

The unit is not noisy at all and the sounds produced from it are clear and very warm. Very reminiscent of older-type delayed sounds. I believe this is an analog unit, and not digital. It sounds very "analog."

I've had the unit for a number of years and its never failed me. All Rockman products are INCREDIBLY durable and will probably never need fixing. I've never heard of any of my friends getting their Rockman equipment fixed.

Yes, I would definately buy it again. The unit is extremely reliable and it comes with a built-in power supply. (Very handy! No wall-wart plug or batteries needed.) You can use any on/off-type switch to turn the echo on and off. It's also a stereo design, so you can use it for that application as well.

The best stereo echo I have ever heard. Very clean and lush, does not affect tone. Transparent. Best unit they ever made, buy it, if you can find one before evryone else finds out about it and the price goes up. Feedback control lets notes sustain forever. Also great for doubling effects.

If it ever broke, I would buy another one regardless of cost. An essential part of my sound, distoted or clean. Works especially well in a rack such as my Boogie 395 and Studio Preamp.
